Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month

E

xplorer Ponce de Leon discovered Florida in 1513, claiming the land for Spain. Five hundred years later, settlers from Spanish-speaking countries continue to call Florida home. In fact, almost 30% of the population in Broward County and nearly 70% in Miami Dade is Hispanic. That is why National Hispanic Heritage Month is especially meaningful here in South Florida. Observed from September 15th to October 15th, National Hispanic Heritage Month celebrates the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. Throughout the month, there will be numerous events and celebrations taking place, such as the Hispanic Heritage Festival at Miramar Regional Park on September 16th, a Hispanic Heritage Concert at the NSU Miniaci Performing Arts Center on October 8th, or the Hispanic Heritage Month Festival on October 14th at the Pembroke Pines Branch Library featuring food, music, crafts, and storytelling. Experience all that the region has to offer by taking advantage of the calendar section in Our City magazine. Each month we include a curated list of diverse community activities and events, which appeal to a wide range of people and interests.

All Aboard! The Transportation Exhibit is Open at The Plantation Historical Museum BY BEVERLY PERKINS

E

veryone is invited to visit the Plantation Historical Museum. The non-profit, free admission facility proudly announces, “The Transportation Exhibit” which will be open until October 7th, 2017. The exhibit is a representation on the history of transportation while highlighting important events and people throughout time such as the first transcontinental railroad, Henry Flagler and the Pony Express. The collection features the Florida Citrus Model Train Society (FCMTS) and its different scale train layouts. The display is an overview of different modes of transportation from horses to trains. The train club is made up of retired professionals who never gave up their hobby or love of trains. FCMTS President, Ken Sargeant, conducts an educational program, in conjunction with the Operation Lifesaver organization, on train safety to touring summer camps and schools. The Florida Citrus Model Train Society (FCMTS) has set up their N scale, O scale, HO scale, and G scale train layouts and runs various kinds of engines such as diesel, steam and electric. The volunteers of this train club spent unmeasurable hours on every detail such as every tiny person, tiny tree, tiny car and tiny building. Visitors can expect to see model trains running, a recreated early 1900s train depot, a blacksmith shop, a display of miniature cars from the 1960s to 1990s, a military transportation case which showcases hand-made bombers, aircraft carriers, and tanks, and so much more. Some other features in the vignette are an old candlestick telephone, a telegraph key, and a typewriter. The blacksmith shop has

a forge and tools on display with accompanying information about horses. Some of Plantation Historical Society’s members loaned the museum several airline memorabilia from Delta, National, Eastern and Pan Am airlines. “The current exhibit highlights how transportation started from horses and boats and evolved to trains, automobiles, and airplanes. It’s all about how we travelled from one place to another,” says Museum Curator, John Feeney. “Our special feature is the Florida Citrus Model Train Society with their different scale model trains and modules. The members of this club, run different types of trains to match the specific era of their layouts. One layout would have a diesel engine, another may have a steam engine with real smoke puffing through its chimney. This exhibit would be sure to delight kids and bring back memories for the adults.” The Plantation Historical Museum is located at 511 North Fig Lane, Plantation, 33317. For more information, please call 954-797-2722, or visit www.plantation.org/museum.

Recently, the center was given $56 million to undergo an expansion which will include a 3-story tower and 72 private rooms so the hospital can better serve its patients. In addition, a new hospital will be built on the campus of Nova Southeastern University in Davie. Construction on the new 3-story patient tower began in August. During the 18 months of construction,

the main entrance will be closed and patients and visitors will be re-routed to the admitting entrance on the east side of the building, or the ER. Due to the on-going expansion, The Westside Regional Center Volunteer Services Department proudly announced their new “Volunteer Ambassador Program”. Volunteers are needed to greet and provide assistance and direction to hospital visitors by escorting guests or transporting those who need wheelchair assistance to their destination. “We want to ensure that our patients and visitors have the help they need during this time, so that is one reason why we are actively looking to build our patient ambassador program,” said Liz Gassew, Director of Volunteer Services. “We are looking for volunteers to help our patients and visitors navigate their way through the hospital so that they are escorted to their destination with a smile. A personal, friendly touch can make such a difference, especially in the hospital setting.” The rewarding positions are open to compassionate, active, and friendly individuals who have some free time available. Volunteers will be trained and given maps, and must learn their way around the hospital. They need to be able to walk and push a

wheelchair. Other areas where individuals can volunteer in addition to the ambassador program are the gift shop, patient units, and in some administrative areas of the hospital. Volunteers are asked to come in for at least one 4-hour shift per week. But more shifts are always available, depending on the individual’s desire and schedule. Volunteers can be any age. The adult auxiliary program is open to those 18 and over, but the “Volunteen” program offers teens (14-18) an opportunity to experience the healthcare setting. “If you want to spend time helping others, the hospital is a great place to volunteer,” says Jenny Mackie, Director of Marketing. Westside Regional Medical Center is located at 8201 W. Broward Blvd., Plantation. Ophthalmology Services For My Enlightening 30-Year Journey as an Ophthalmologist

W

BY ALAN D. MENDELSOHN, MD, FACS

hen I completed my fellowship training at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in 1987 and began practicing ophthalmology in Hollywood July 1987, I was part of a new wave of ophthalmologists who brought the exciting technique of out-patient cataract surgery to Broward County. Our predecessors would admit patients to the hospital the night prior to surgery and keep them hospitalized for an additional night following surgery. Avoiding the hassles and expenses of hospitalization was attractive, but even more advantageous was avoiding the risks of hospital –induced infections. Out-patient cataract surgery became an almost instant success.

Outpatient Cateract Surgery

For the next decade, those of us on the “cutting edge” of cataract surgery in Hollywood were doing cataract surgery by a procedure called Extracapsular Cataract Extraction whereby we removed the nucleus of the cataract in its entirety. This necessitated that we make a large incision in the eye. The cataract was removed, followed by insertion of an intraocular lens (IOL). At the completion of surgery, five to seven sutures were required to close and secure the surgical incision. The eye was pressure patched. For the next three weeks, we encouraged our post cataract surgery patients with the following refrain: “Do not bend, do not lift, do not exercise, do not exert.” Finally, after three weeks our patients could become “free agents” again and resumed their normal lives. We began suture removal in the office, and by the sixth post-operative week the patient received a final new eyeglass prescription. The IOLs utilized in that era provided fairly good distance vision, but eyeglasses were needed to see near and intermediate distances, with fine tuning of distance vision.

“No Stich” Cateract Surgery

While moving cataract surgery to an out-patient basis was considered revolutionary at the time, an even bigger milestone transpired with the transformation of cataract surgery in the mid to late 1990’s to a highly improved technology called Phacoemulcification (phaco). Instead of removing the cataract nucleus in its entirety, with a hightech ultrasound we could break up the nucleus into tiny fragments and suck them out. This paved the way to tiny incisions in the eye and the advent of “no stitch” cataract surgery. Phaco brought quicker, safer, and better visual outcomes to the cataract surgery arena. With great pleasure, on the very first post-operative day, I was now able to encouragingly tell my patients, “You can now bend, lift, exercise and resume 100% of your activities!” Even more importantly, post-operative edema, infections, and inflammations plummeted with the new technology. Cataract surgeries were now routinely scheduled two weeks apart instead of two months apart. Concurrently, there have been remarkable enhancements in the instruments that we utilize pre-operatively in the office to ascertain the optimal custom fit intraocular lens for any given patient. The quality of these high tech ophthalmic devices and ultrasounds utilized pre-operatively for Iens determinations, as well as the expertise of the staff actually making the measurements, are of paramount importance for excellent visual outcomes.

30th Anniversary

From the onset of my career in 1987, through to the present time, we have been blessed with newer generations of intraocular lenses (IOLs) which provide superior vision. Another career milestone occurred within the past ten years with the arrival of the multifocal ReStor IOL. With the ReStor IOL, we can generally correct most patients’ cataracts

and enable them to see near, far, and everywhere in between without the aid of glasses or contact lenses. The ability to read, drive, work on the computer, and see without glasses is an incredible freedom that was never possible with traditional monofocal lenses. My journey in the world of cataract surgery in Hollywood has now hit three decades as I had my 30-year anniversary of practicing ophthalmology on July 1st! Perhaps the most incredible landmark and noteworthy step on this journey has been the landmark transformation in cataract surgery to the new era of laser-assisted cataract surgery that has commenced in earnest in the past five years. Femtosecond laser cataract surgery is highly reproducible, far more accurate, and far safer than older techniques of cataract surgery with a scalpel. The laser offers excellent precision thereby producing the absolute best visual outcomes in current cataract surgery. Furthermore, patients with low or moderate levels of astigmatism can have this astigmatism eliminated or greatly reduced at the same time as the cataract procedure, resulting in a markedly enhanced quality of vision and overall outcome. In essence, this is customized laser cataract surgery utilizing high-tech 3D imaging and tailoring the ultra-precise treatment to the unique size and shape of your eye.

My Own Cataract Surgery

On a personal note, even though I am a cataract surgeon, naturally I am not exempt from developing cataracts myself. In fact, in 2014, at age 56, I began to notice the litany of complaints that I have heard from my patients. First, I noticed that while driving at night, I was not as comfortable or confident as I was driving during the day. Second, oncoming headlights became bothersome, and eventually so did the rising or setting sunlight in my face

Dr. Alan D. Mendelsohn

while driving. Third, I had always been an avid reader, able to read small print journals or novels for hours at a time prior to the inception of my cataracts. But in 2013 and 2014, I noted that reading tiny print became more of a chore and challenge, curtailing my reading duration. Finally, and most importantly by far, I needed to be positive that my vision was excellent to examine my patients and perform surgical procedures. I decided that it was time to proceed. In July 2014, I was the personal beneficiary of the wonderful transformations of modern ophthalmology that I described. I had advanced laser cataract surgery with the insertion of an ReStor lens in my right eye, with the same procedures to my left eye the following week. My vision is now phenomenal! I wore eyeglasses starting at six years of age and then began with contact lenses around age 13. Until age 56, I needed glasses or contact lenses for everything! Now, for the past three years, I wear no glasses, no contact lenses, nothing. Of course, I practice what I preach and always wear sunglasses with UV400 blocker and polarization outdoors during daylight hours for ocular protection. My quality of vision and depth perception are the absolute best of my entire adult life. I am delighted! Now at age 59 and feeling like the bionic man, I look forward to my next decade serving the community as an ophthalmologist on this thoroughly enlightening journey!

ovenant Village of Florida and Covenant Retirement Communities (CRC), a non-profit, faith-based, senior living organization headquartered in Skokie, Ill., announced a scholarship recipient who is part of the Employee Dependent Scholarship program. Ivan Sola, South Plantation High School Class of 2017 graduate, was awarded with an $1,800 scholarship to use towards his higher education. His mother, Denise Oliver, has been the Director of Human Resources at Covenant Village of Florida for nearly 5 years. Sola plans to study speech pathology and business administration at Florida State University in Tallahassee. Sola was chosen based on an essay and criteria demonstrating clear educational and career pursuits that are consistent with CRC values, along with involvement in extra-curricular activities. “Ivan has always been a kid who has tried his best. Ivan is well-balanced. Academics are important and so are extracurricular activities,” said Oliver. “I was grateful to CRC for offering this scholarship program. CRC values education and they care for their employees and their children. College is an expense, so the financial assistance is a big help.” Sola says his personal story of overcoming stuttering and his experience with a communications disorder have influenced him to help others with communications disorders grow to their full potential. In addition to excelling acaIvan Sola demically, Ivan played baseball during all four

He served as captain, and was named “Athlete of the Year” his senior year as well. “I was surprised and honored that Covenant Village of Florida was willing to help invest in my future through this scholarship,” said Ivan Sola. “I plan to take courses in speech pathology. I’m overcoming my own challenge of a mild stutter, which started when I was younger, and it is a personal interest of mine to learn from and help others.” CRC recognizes and supports lifelong learning as a powerful means that can provide young adults skills and values needed to be capable and compassionate individuals. Recipients are current high school graduates who receive funds through tuition reimbursement and are dependents of employees at Covenant Village of Florida. “Denise is a valued employee and her son, Ivan, has not only excelled in school, but he did so in a manner that reflected the strength of his character. He’s inspiring to all of us and we’re proud and excited to support his academic journey,” stated Doug Fennema, Executive Director, Covenant Village of Florida. Chicago-based Covenant Retirement Communities (CRC) is the nation’s sixth largest, non-profit, senior services provider. It serves 5,000 residents at 15 retirement communities in 10 states and offers independent living, assisted living, skilled nursing, memory care, and rehabilitation. Plantation High School Graduate Will Go to Infinity and Beyond! BY BEVERLY PERKINS

CAN DO KID

P

lantation resident and Plantation High School graduate Mitra Kiciman was selected as a Bank of America Student Leader. The Bank of America Charitable Foundation selects only five exceptional high school juniors and seniors for this coveted position in the Bank of America Student Leaders® Program at the YMCA of Broward County. The choices are based on the students’ commitment to serving the community and making Broward a better place to live along with their outstanding academic achievements. The eight-week paid internship opportunity gives junior and senior level students the opportunity to develop and apply leadership skills through hands-on community work experience at local nonprofit organizations as part of the Bank of America’s Student Leaders® program. Mitra, who will soon set off to Duke University, has an incredible passion for science. As an advocate for STEM education, he’s been involved as part of the NASA Student Launch Initiative for three years and has volunteered more than 100 hours of his time at the Museum of Discovery of Science. He has also been involved in his school’s STEM Start™ Summer Camp and Open Lab Nights as part of their Aerospace Engineering Program in an effort to expand their outreach. “My inspiration to give back to my community comes from the opportunities my community has given to me. Throughout my life, I have been accepted to competitive programs, which provided me with extracurricular enrichment both during the school year and in summer. These have helped foster my academic interests, prepared me for college, and improved my educational foundations,” said Kiciman. “While they have been excellent for me, they are inaccessible for many

of my peers, either due to cost or selectivity. Because of how transformative these opportunities have been for me, I believe that they are essential for all students and shouldn’t be limited by ability to pay or academic achievement, especially when the students with the lowest incomes and least successful academic records are the ones most in need of help.” In addition to the internship, these select individuals from Broward County had the opportunity to travel to Washington D.C. to join more than 200 other Bank of America Student Leaders from around the country for a week-long Leadership Summit. The students met with members of Congress, learned about diversity and nonprofit work, and built and applied leadership skills through hands-on community work experience. “The opportunity to place my own accomplishments within the context of a nation of youth who are working to change the world was uplifting and inspiring,” added Kiciman. “Mitra is a remarkable young man with a passion for making an impact, and this experience will equip him to better lead, build relationships and ensure success in college and once he enters the workforce,” said Lori Chevy, Broward County Market President for Bank of America. Since 2004, the program has supported 2,200 young people nationwide. St. Gregory Student Walks in the Footsteps of U.S. Leaders

SCHOOL NEWS

BY BEVERLY PERKINS

E

rik Aslaksen of Plantation, joined outstanding middle school students from across the United States as they took part in an extraordinary leadership development experience, the “2017 Junior National Young Leaders Alumni Conference”, an Envision program. This was Erik’s second summer participating in the program. The enthusiastic 8th grader attended the Washington, D.C. program in the summer of 2016 after being nominated by his teacher from St. Gregory the Great Catholic School in Plantation. The program provides a historical view of leadership and encourages young scholars to continue to develop their own leadership skills and strategies for success in the 21st century. The students invited to the conference are alumni of the Junior National Young Leaders Conference, an Envision program held each year in Washington, D.C.

“This is an exceptional group of young scholars distinguished by their academic excellence, past participation in leadership programs and prospects for future leadership potential,” said Andrew Potter, MA; MA NEJS, Chief Academic Officer for the conference. “In addition to diving further into our nation’s rich history in Boston, scholars were challenged to build upon their prior experiences and further their understanding of key leadership characteristics such as courage, character and perseverance.” The six-day conference for sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade students allowed emerging young leaders to take part in fun and exciting workshops, and participate in simulations to delve deeper into the fundamental aspects of leadership and how those important traits are connected to qualities embraced by history’s greatest men and women. As part of their educational journey, students visited significant historical sites such as Plymouth Plantation, the home of the Mayflower II, the town of Salem, Boston’s Freedom Trail, and Lexington and Concord. “This was my second year with this Junior National Leader’s Conference. Last year we were in Washington D.C. We learned about things like tolerance and how to speak out,”

said Erik. “I met a lot of new friends from all over the nation. My favorite part was the Freedom Trail.” Potter went on to say, “Students learned about the different historic figures and events that helped shape America, giving them a greater appreciation of the country’s earliest beginnings and our future path.” “This is a great opportunity for middle school kids to gain confidence and learn to be more confident and independent in a safe and inspiring environment. It was a great group of kids,” added Erik’s mother, Rhonda Ritchie Aslaksen. ▸▸ Breast Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI): A breast MRI uses magnets and radio waves to take photos of the breast. An MRI is often used in addition with a mammogram to screen women who are at a higher risk for getting breast cancer. Women at a higher risk include those with family history, a genetic tendency, or other factors. Oftentimes, breast MRIs may appear abnormal even when there is no cancer, so it’s not recommended for those women with an average risk.

Types of Breast Screening Tests

▸▸ Mammogram: This is the most popular screening test used, and the best way to detect breast cancer early. A mammogram is an X-ray of the breast. The non-invasive and quick procedure may be uncomfortable for a quick minute, but can truly save lives. It is recommended to schedule one yearly to lower the risk of dying from breast cancer.

ASK THE EXPERT

I

t is highly recommended that women ages 40-44 should begin breast cancer screenings. Regular screenings are used for the early detection of breast cancer. These screenings check a woman’s breasts for cancer before any signs or symptoms of the disease appear. Although breast cancer screenings cannot prevent breast cancer, it can help detect any signs of breast cancer early when it’s easier to treat. This approach is suggested by physicians as well as the United States Preventative Services Task Force (USPSTF) and The American Cancer Society. Women need to discuss with their doctor which type of screening test is best for them, and when is the appropriate time to have one. Being informed of the benefits and risks are necessary when determining which tests to choose.

Other Exams

▸▸ Clinical Breast Exam: A doctor or nurse use their hands to feel for lumps or any other changes in the breasts during a regular check-up. ▸▸ Breast Self-Awareness: Women know their breasts best. If there are any changes or symptoms such as lumps, pain, and/or changes in size, report any findings to your health care provider right away. Being familiar with your own breasts is important, but it is not a substitute for the other screening methods. Screenings are often done at a special women’s clinics, hospitals, and sometimes a doctor’s offices. Your health care provider can help you find the place best for you. Most health insurance plans are required to cover mammograms every 1 to 2 years for women beginning at the age of 40 with no out-of-pocket costs such as co-pays, deductibles, or co-insurance. Dr. Jay Cohen specializes in Obstetrics & Gynecology and is affiliated with Plantation General Hospital. Go Ahead, Jump!

M

any parents these days are looking for things to do with their children that aren’t just fun, but healthy and affordable as well. Healthy entertainment is the current trend as indoor parks are popping up all over the country. South Floridian families can now experience “The Ultimate Trampoline Park”. Rockin’ Jump is centrally and conveniently located inside Xtreme Action Park in Fort Lauderdale close to I-95 and Commercial Boulevard. The 23,000-square foot space includes a Ninja Course, an open jumping arena, 2 trampoline dodge ball courts, a slam dunk zone, a stunt bag area, X-Beam, rock climbing walls, and a play area for kids under 6 years old. The mezzanine provides the perfect place for hosting “Rockin’ Party” events such as birthday parties or corporate functions. Rockin’ Jump owner, Jens Berding recently answered some questions about his new venture with his wife Eddy Manzo-Berding.

Tell us about your new establishment? My wife Eddy and I are dedi-

cated to providing a safe, clean and fun family entertainment environment. The model of the park is very easy to understand. We’re people like you who want to exercise, but also like to have fun, lots of fun. Rockin’ jump is a place where you can soar in open jump arenas, dive into a stunt bag, play trampoline dodgeball, do flips and somersaults. We also wanted a new alternative for birthday parties and family gatherings, where quality food and private party rooms are guaranteed. Our goal is to be part of the Fort Lauderdale community by offering extreme fun, and a great work out for kids and adults alike.

What makes you different from competitors? The difference

between us and the rest of the trampoline parks is that we are rooted in the community. We are engaged with local schools to promote academic

values and we want to recognize sports performance by supporting sports leagues and swim teams. We believe there is not better success rather than the one achieved in partnership with your local schools and sport teams. In this regard, we are the new alternative to organize fundraising events for your school and end of the season parties. We have been very successful partnering with local schools such as Bayview Elementary, St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, McNab Elementary by promoting community engagement while families, teachers and friends of the school have fun.

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT

BY BEVERLY PERKINS

What else would you like to share with our readers? Our park allows

kids of all ages to play safely while parents socialize with other parents. The pre-teens/teens have a separate space, and the toddlers have their own area making it safe for all. At Rockin’ Jump families get the exercise they need and lots of laughs along the way. It’s funny how much adults want to participate as much as the kids. We have also developed a Rockin’ Club program where we will combine academics and fitness after school. Rockin’ Jump is located inside Xtreme Action Park at 5300 Powerline Road, Ft. Lauderdale. For more information, please call 954-656-1241 or visit www.ftlauderdale.rockinjump.com.

A

s far as awareness campaigns go, September is just brimming with a wide array of causes, including designations like “National Head Lice Prevention Month” and “World Rabies Day”. One of this month’s campaigns, “Falls Prevention Awareness Day”, observed in the U.S on September 22nd, seeks to curb something we should find truly scary: injury obtained when someone takes a fall. Falls are the leading cause of fatal and nonfatal injuries for adults age 65 and older, one-inthree of whom will fall each year. With more than 15% of all Sunrise residents being in this same age demographic, the risk is of relevance here. Over the last five years, Sunrise Fire Rescue (SFR) responded to over 5878 injuries resulting from a person falling. The good news is that these occurrences can be reduced in both frequency and severity through evidence-based programs, such as SFR’s Community Paramedic program and A Matter of Balance classes, the latter of which is offered free of charge through the City of Sunrise Senior Center in partnership with the Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC). Upon implementing these prevention efforts and conducting ongoing educational outreach, 9-1-1 call data from 2012 – 2016 reveals that SFR has seen a steady reduction in the number fall-related injuries each year. Now celebrating a decade of ongoing Falls Prevention Awareness Day campaigns, the National Council on Aging (NCOA) has announced this year’s campaign theme: “10 Years Standing Together to Prevent Falls”. The NCOA recommends older adults take the following actions to reduce personal risk factors that may make them more vulnerable for fall-related injuries: ▸▸ Stay Active. Lack of exercise results in diminished muscle tone and bone density, whereas physical activity can maintain - and even increase - strength and balance. Activities like Tai Chi and Chair Yoga have been proven to buffer against possible injuries resulting from a fall, and to reduce a person’s likelihood of falling in the first place. These classes – like A Matter of Balance - are offered at the Senior Center; call (954) 572-3670 for details. ▸▸ Visit your doctor, regularly reviewing medications for side effects and interactions. Have your vision and hearing checked, updating prescription glasses and hearing aids if needed. ▸▸ Use assisted devices, such as a walker or wheelchair, as advised and use them consistently. These devices can be wonderful aides in maintaining independence and quality of life, when used faithfully as directed. ▸▸ Do a home safety check to identify and correct common hazards like loose rugs, cluttered walkways, and insufficient lighting. Installing grab bars in the shower is strongly recommended. Home safety modifications may be available locally at no cost to eligible seniors, through programs such as Home Touch and the Barrier Free Housing Program; call the ADRC at (954)745-9779 for more information on those resources and numerous others. For more information and safety tips, visit the City of Sunrise website at www.sunrisefl.gov/fire, ‘Like’ us on Facebook at Sunrise Fire-Rescue and follow us on Twitter@SunriseFRD.
