The Broward Center volunteer ushers are a dynamic mix of theater-lovers, from retired seniors and baby boomers to high school students, many of whom earn community service hours and volunteer alongside a parent or grandparent. The Broward Center for the Performing Arts is located in the Riverwalk Arts & Entertainment District at 201 SW Fifth Avenue in Fort Lauderdale. The Children’s Ability Center is a facility dedicated to helping children with developmental disabilities and their families. “It was a thrill and an honor to have Romero Britto share his extraordinary talents with us,” said JAFCO Executive Director Sarah Franco. “His joyful personality and colorful art made the occasion an emotional and financial success. Open Your Heart to Art was the culmination of a 6-month fundraiser to benefit the programs and services available at the Children’s Ability Center. Prior to the event, JAFCO supporters had the chance to purchase one of Britto’s eleven one-of-a kind sculp-

The Cigna/ Broward College 30th Annual Golf Classic supports the Broward College First Generation in College Scholarship, designed for students who are the first in their families to tackle higher education. “Generating funds to offer First Generation scholarships reflects our strong belief that Broward College students are the future of our community,” said Ellice Martinez, District Director for Advancement, Foundation and Campaign Initiatives. “If our students are determined to work hard, we are determined to help them succeed.” First Generation scholarships help students bridge the gap between the amount of federal assistance available and the cost of tuition, fees and books. The Broward College Foundation is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization and the officially designated means of making private, charitable contributions to Broward College. Its purpose is to change lives through education by providing community awareness, advocacy and funding to the College. Members of the Foundation’s volunteer board of directors work closely with the College’s Office of Advancement to raise money to support scholarships, academic programs and learning facility enhancements. They believe every person who is determined to change his or her life through the pursuit of higher education should be afforded that opportunity. oin Brain Injury Association of Florida and HealthSouth Sunrise Rehabilitation Hospital on Saturday March 4th, 2017 at the City of Sunrise’s Athletic Complex 11501 NW 44th Street, Sunrise, FL 33351, to honor people you know, love, or have lost to brain injury and help raise awareness and dollars for an important cause. Registration and check-in begins at 8:00 a.m. and the 1.2 mile walk begins at 9:30 a.m. The walk is FREE. Register or donate at www.biaf.org/walkabout. All proceeds support Brain Injury Association of Florida, Inc. Each year over 136,000 Floridians suffer from a TBI. Broward, Palm Beach and Miami-Dade counties have the highest incidences said BIAF President and CEO Valerie Breen. “Although awareness of TBI is on the rise, people are still not aware of how to prevent brain injury or where to turn if someone they love has a TBI,” Breen said. A TBI can be sustained from falls, fights, playground injuries, car crashes, bike accidents, work injuries, sport injury as well as other activities that cause bruising, bleeding, shearing or swelling to the brain. Soldiers, athletes, toddlers, teenagers and grandparents are impacted the most. Since 1985 Brain Injury Association of Florida, Inc. (BIAF) has remained the statewide heart and home for Florida’s brain injury community. It’s where the promise,

By Your Side™ is kept. It’s where education and counseling restore hope. It’s where prevention from further brain injury is taught. It is the place where people believe no one should have to fend for themselves after a diagnosis of traumatic brain injury (TBI). The BIAF is committed to both local and statewide advocacy. BIAF works diligently with advocates to raise awareness about brain injury, survivors, and their families, amongst lawmakers and the public. WalkAbout Brain Injury involves survivors and their families in local communities throughout Florida. The Walk started in Tallahassee in 2014 with less than 50 people. WalkAbout has grown to 4 cities and over 1,200 participants in just a few years. The goal is to spread WalkAbout across the state and bring awareness about brain injury to thousands each year. Looks Matter: The Homeowners Guide to Roof Cleaning BY JILL SHARPE

Identify Your Roof Type.

This is the first and most important step to take. Do not assume cleaning companies will do this for you. A properly maintained roof should last 25 – 30 years. This is quite a lengthy “relationship”, and knowing how to properly care for your home’s roof will help you maintain the warranties, and save you the added expense and headache of prematurely replacing the roof do to negligence/damage. Common roof materials are asphalt shingle, clay, concrete tile, and Stone Coat Steel. Check with the manufacturer recommendations to ensure that the proposed cleaning methods will not void your manufacture warranty.

When Evaluating A Roof Cleaning Service, Be Aware of the Following: Chlorine Bleach. Chlorine based cleaning methods may be an option but you need to know some key facts. Strong chlorine solutions damage the roof, corrode metal flashings, and compromise integrity of the underlayment by drying out the oils that give your

underlayment its waterproof protectant barrier. This may void workmanship warranties, which leaves you responsible for costly repairs. Manufacturers typically recommend using household bleach, which is 6-10% active or highly diluted Chlorine. Chlorine is 100% active and also leaves behind a salt residue, which feeds and accelerates future mold growth. Regardless of the detergent/cleaning agent used, it must be thoroughly rinsed off afterwards. This avoids leaving any residue or potential penetration of underlayment.

SECTION HEAD FEATURE STORY

F

or Florida homeowners, the structural/ cosmetic integrity of your roof should be top priority. Without proper maintenance, the entire home and its contents are at risk for damage. Tropical weather conditions promote accelerated mold growth, which can pose a serious threat. If left unchecked, not only does the mold look unattractive but can potentially cause health problems and even lower overall property value. Beauty may be in the eye of the beholder, however looks do matter! This is where a roof cleaning enters the picture. Unfortunately, choosing a qualified company for the job can be a dilemma. We’ve compiled some information to help determine what may work best for your roof, and also to assist in separating the pesky fly-by-nights from the reputable companies.

Pressure Cleaning.

Certain roof surfaces, such as tile and concrete roof structures can tolerate pressure cleaning. However, pressure cleaning is not a long term solution to keeping your roof clean. Experienced and knowledgeable cleaning service is imperative. Improper foot traffic and poor equipment calibration can wreak havoc on your roof. Some companies will use chlorine to cut labor time and cost. Be sure that in addition to choosing a company that specializes in roof cleaning, ask, what, if any, cleaning agents they intend to use on your roof. **Be advised: Stone Coat Steel and Asphalt Shingle structures should NEVER be pressure cleaned.

Algaecides/Preventative Products.

Mold preventative products are an excellent follow up to a roof cleaning. While filtering through options ask these following questions: Is the product endorsed by roofing manufacturers? Are you being offered a warranty on the product’s effectiveness against mold/mildew? If so, get it in writing, and read the fine print! Learn what is covered, which company is covering it, and what recourse you may have in the event that you need to call on it. The warranty is also only good as long as the company who issued it is in business. Be aware of newly established

The Oak Ridge community roof “before” using Roof-A-Cide.

The Oak Ridge Community roof “after” the Roof-A-Cide application.

companies as well. You can verify businesses on www. Sunbiz.org. Also, have the contractor explain how the product works, to ensure that you are not being sold a roof cleaning agent posing as a mold preventative product. One particular product that is dominating the South Florida market for over 20 years is Roof-A-Cide. Roof-A-Cide is a copper based, EPA approved mold preventative product offering a Two Year written warranty. Applicators using this product must be trained and authorized by the manufacture. Warranties are backed by the product manufacture as well as the Applicator that applied it.

Experience & Qualifications.

Roof cleaning doesn’t require a significant outlay of cash for equipment. Smaller pressure washing, painting, and window cleaning contractors are adding roof cleaning to their menu of services without having real experience and knowledge of basic roofing structure. Using due care is extremely important, and the ideal roof cleaning service should be knowledgeable about roof cleaning and stain prevention. If you’re considering having your roof cleaned, do some basic research to ensure that your chosen contractor is licensed, insured, and qualified to work on your roof. Check with your roofers and neighbors for recommendations. Word of mouth is the most honest form of advertisement. Roof Treatment Inc., Located in Broward County, offers cleaning methods for most roof surfaces. They are an authorized Roof-A-Cide applicator family owned company with 15+ years of experience in roof cleaning and stain prevention. For more information, you can call Roof Treatment Inc at 954-275-1831 or visit them at 2045 SW 127th Avenue in Davie. You can also check out the exclusive RoofA-Cide product at www.roofacide.com.

South Florida Actress Writes and Performs Yet Another Hit One-Woman Show at the Adrienne Arsht Center

22

F

ans of Elena Maria Garcia are thrilled to see her back on stage at the Arsht Center-Carnival Studio Theater through March 12th in Fuácata, a one-woman tour-deforce performance that brings more than 20 Latina women to glorious life on stage! Fuácata or A Latina’s Guide to Surviving the Universe, is a world premiere comedy co-written by Garcia and Stuart Meltzer, Zoetic Stage Artistic Director. The show finds endless humor in what it means to be Latina in today’s America, where politicians speak of building walls while tourism booms in Havana. The show weaves together stories and songs of love, marriage, immigration and identity. Portraying a breadth of personalities and rich culture, Garcia honestly and humorously navigates life’s many struggles, pitfalls and triumphant rewards. The show, according to Garcia, represents today’s “do it all” Hispanic/Latina woman. “It’s a strong elevated piece that delivers an inspiring message through the use of humor,” said Garcia. The 21 characters in the performance show how each of the people in “Elena’s” life survive their everyday and teach her a lesson along the way,” she said.

MARCH 2017 | OUR CITY PLANTATION

Garcia’s last one-woman show Do You Speak Mexican, was biographical. “As crazy as the show is, everything is true,” said Garcia. “I didn’t have to reach far.” For Fuácata, Garcia was inspired by family members, friends, and stories she has read or heard. “We wanted to incorporate other Hispanic/Latina women and their point of view. Fuacata is a funny poignant piece that allows the audience to laugh and reflect on the character and their choices.” Garcia, a long time Plantation resident, is the director of education for Universal Acting, located at 6905 Broward Boulevard. She also teaches at New World School of the Arts, Nova Southeastern University and Florida International University. She has appeared in numerous commercials and television shows and is a threetime recipient of the prestigious Carbonell award for best supporting actor for Zoetic Stage’s Moscow and City Theatre’s Summer Shorts for best supporting actor and ensemble. She was last seen in Thinking Cap Theatre’s production of Parallel Lives and The Book of Liz. For more information and to purchase tickets for Fuácata, visit www.arshtcenter.org.

March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month

Importance of Colon Cancer Screening Colon cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in the United States. But how much do you really know about colon cancer? Colon Brenda Jimenez, MD cancer is one of few diseases where benign tissue – in this case, polyps – actually turns deadly. Removing nonmalignant polyps during a colonoscopy procedure may prevent colon cancer from developing. Therefore, preventing colon cancer may be easier than you think.

Prevention and Detection

You can help avoid colon cancer just by getting screened. “If we detect precancerous polyps during a colonoscopy, we can remove them at the same time, before they turn into cancer,” says Brenda Jimenez, MD, Cleveland Clinic Florida gastroenterologist. That’s one reason colon cancer is so preventable. “It takes approximately 10 years for a small colon polyp to become cancerous,” she adds.

Other tests for colon cancer include sigmoidoscopy, fecal occult blood test and CT colonoscopy. However, if they show any abnormality, a colonoscopy is needed.

Who is at risk of colon cancer? Everyone is at risk of developing colon cancer. Over 75% of patients who are diagnosed have had no identifiable risk factors. People at increased risk include those with a strong family history of the disease, an inherited tendency to form polyps, a long history of ulcerative colitis. These patients are at moderate to high risk. The risk is particularly strong if the first degree relative with cancer was less than age 60. However, they are in the minority. The disease occurs most often in those who least expect it. Other common risk factors are; age, obesity, physical inactivity, diet, alcohol and tobacco use.

Symptoms of colon cancer include a change in bowel habits, abdominal pain, rectal bleeding or anemia. Patients with symptoms should have an examination of the whole colon called colonoscopy. People with no symptoms should be screened for colorectal cancer starting at age 50.

Are there symptoms?

According to the American Cancer Society, colon polyps often don’t cause any symptoms, particularly in the early stages. That’s why screening is so important. You may have polyps and not know it. The U.S. Preventative Services Task Force recommends regular colon cancer screenings for everyone age 50 and older, age 45 or older if AfricanAmerican. Your doctor may recommend earlier screenings if you have a family history or other high risk of colon polyps or cancer. To schedule a consultation with Dr. Jimenez, call 866.303.8464 or visit us online at clevelandclinicflorida.org/coloncancer.

Take a free colon cancer risk assessment online. Screening for colon cancer can save lives, but only if people get tested. Find out your risk for developing colon cancer by taking our free online risk assessment at clevelandclinicflorida.org/coloncancer.

When is it Time for Adolescent Gynecology? ASK THE EXPERT

O

ne of the most frequently asked questions we often receive is, “What is the appropriate age to take my daughter to the gynecologist?” As a girl matures and enters her teenage years, she may experience problems with her menstrual cycle, acne or become sexually active. The majority of problems and concerns can be addressed with her pediatrician or family physician. However, if your daughter or the young teen in your care has problems with her cycle that include decreased quality of life, anemia, absences from school or work or is thinking of or has become sexually active, I advise that she establish care with a gynecologist. The thought of going to a gynecologist for the first time may make her feel nervous, embarrassed or even frightened if she doesn’t know what to expect. Additionally, she may not understand why she needs to go, especially if she is feeling fine. As a parent or guardian, you can make a significant difference in how she approaches her health and care, not only now, but in the years to come. Begin this process by easing any concerns she may have and talk to her before her visit so she understands why the appointment is necessary and what to expect. Be sure to give her time to ask you questions as well.

It is helpful to know the types of questions we may ask, so she can be prepared. For instance, we will always ask when her last menstrual cycle was. You daughter or the young teen in your care should also decide beforehand whether or not she would like you to join her in the exam room. Whatever she decides, be supportive, and make sure she also has some time alone with her care provider so she has an opportunity to share any information she may be too embarrassed to reveal with you in the room. Our physicians are here to help and want you and your daughter to have a positive experience when you visit us, whether it is your first appointment, or if you have seen us many times. Encourage your daughter or the young teen in your care to explore our website and learn more about the care and services our physicians provide. Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.

Teens may also have concerns about exams and testing. Help reassure her by explaining that her first visit may or may not include an external examination, and that an internal pelvic exam is usually not required until a woman is 21 years of age, unless she is experiencing problems.

Up to $500 for those who qualify.

Chi Foot Spa

Make sure your daughter or the young teen in your care knows that the primary focus of the appointment will be to share information. She can ask general health questions or ask about things that may feel more confidential. Also, let her know that although she may not have questions now, she may in the future, so it is important to have yearly appointments so she can get to know her gynecologist.

FIRE CHIEF’S MESSAGE

The Plantation Volunteer Fire Department Celebrates 60 Years of Neighbor Helping Neighbor BY LANEY STEARNS, PLANTATION FIRE CHIEF

6

0 years ago, a group of community minded residents from the newly formed City of Plantation recognized the need for the City to have its own fire protection services. Until this point Plantation received their fire services from Fort Lauderdale. But as the City began to grow, it was obvious that would no longer work sufficiently. So was born the Plantation Volunteer Fire Department. The original roster of 22 members contained such familiar names as Frank Veltri, Fred Peters, and Bob Browning. In all 22 of Plantation’s residents formed the Fire Department. In an effort to raise funds to operate the department the members held a barbecue down at the Duck Pond (Now called Heritage Park.) The barbecue became an annual event and this past November we hosted the 60th Annual Plantation Volunteer Fire

Association Barbecue making it the longest running and largest one-day event in the City. As the City grew, so did the Fire Department. It began in a donated warehouse at East Acre Drive and Broward Boulevard, which housed Engine One and grew to the six stations and 22 pieces of apparatus we have today. Six decades later Plantation is the largest volunteer fire department in the state of Florida. We provide a myriad of services including fire suppression (which is still all volunteer), Emergency Medical Services (Rescue), Fire and Life Safety (Prevention) Public Affairs, and more. Our Dive Rescue Team is nationally recognized, and our State certified Training Center provides a wide variety of training programs including Firefighter I & II, Live Fire Instructor, Aerial Operator, and Fire Officer I & II classes. And, thanks to your support of the Bond, we will have the opportunity to provide even greater levels of service with replacement of aging apparatus, new technologies, and improved facilities, all designed to meet the ever changing demands of our progressive City and keep you safe. We invite you to become part of the tradition. If you are at least 18 years of age, have a high school diploma or GED, and live in Plantation we invite you

to learn about the opportunities being a Plantation firefighter can bring. Call us at 954-797-2150, or visit our recruitment page on the website at www.plantation.org. A wise man was once quoted as saying, “Keeping one eye on the past is smart, keeping the other on the future is essential.” We invite you to learn about our colorful history. Stop by the Fire Museum located within the Plantation Historical Museum at 500 N. Fig Tree Lane, to learn about 60 years of neighbor helping neighbor. We also encourage you to follow us on Twitter @Plantationfire and Facebook at City of Plantation Fire Department and watch us continue to move toward tomorrow.

Are you ready to challenge yourself? Are you ready to be a leader in your community? Are you ready to do more than you ever thought possible? BECOME PART OF THE TRADITION Now accepting applications * ALL training provided * Obtain State certifications * Earn a pension * Per call stipend * For more information call 954-797-2150 www.plantation.org @Plantationfire City of Plantation Fire Department 32

PET OF THE MONTH

“Mia”

Mia is a two-year-old tortie cat. Her favorite person is her mom, Jill and her favorite toy is anything that rolls on the floor! She loves to lay her head on anything that is close to her. She jumps on the bed and puts her head on the pillow! She doesn’t like loud noises. Her favorite thing to do is lay out on the balcony and listen to the birds and watch anything that moves! She was last seen sitting on the kitchen chair resting her head on the table.
