Chiropractic? Why Not? “A Doctor’s Confession to West Broward”

Dear Friend,

write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 6/30/17) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $55. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. The law says that I must tell you THAT YOU OR ANY OTHER PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYMENT HAS THE RIGHT TO REFUSE TO PAY, CANCEL PAYMENT, OR BE REIMBURSED FOR TREATMENT, WHICH IS PERFORMED AS A RESULT OF AND WITHIN 72 HOURS OF RESPONDING TO THE ADVERTISEMENT FOR DISCOUNTED, OR REDUCED FEE FOR SERVICE, EXAMINATION, OR TREATMENT.

I

want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the left. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar

Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You benefit from an amazing offer. Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well

Great care at a great fee…Please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications…I’m a graduate of Life College and have been practicing for over 10 years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. I am constantly going to seminars and updating my knowledge so I can give my patients the latest information and techniques of my profession. My assistants are Annie and Melissa – really great people. Our office is both friendly and warm and we try our best to make you feel at home. We have a wonderful service, at an exceptional fee. Our office is called Windmill Health Center and it’s at 17160 Royal Palm Blvd., Suite 1 in the Windmill Professional Plaza. Our phone number is 954-217-4881. Call Ana or Annie for an appointment. We can help you. Thank you. For more information regarding our services please visit our website www.WindmillHealthCenter.com. If you would like to email us with your questions, you may reach us at WindmillHealth@ att.net – Rick Behar, D.C. P.S. I am also offering the second family member for only $47. P.P.S. Your time is as valuable as mine. That’s why I have a no-wait policy. You will be seen within minutes of your appointment.

Hurricane Season – A Time to be Prepared, Not Scared

I

f you’ve lived in South Florida for long enough, you’ve experienced your share of hurricane warnings, scares, and, unfortunately, storms. Last year, many of us boarded up our homes and prepared for the worst. We were lucky that Hurricane Matthew stayed just off the coast and spared us, but this year could be very different. Hurricane season officially lasts from June 1st until November 30th. According to the most recent forecasts, the 2017 Hurricane season should be about average, with a total of 11 named storms. Hurricane “season”, however, is not what causes billions of dollars of damage and threatens lives; it is that one big storm. There is little to no correlation between the number of severe storms in the Atlantic and the number of storms that reach landfall. We owe it to ourselves and to our families to make sure we are prepared. The Florida Department of Emergency Management recommends that every family prepare a hurricane kit and have an evacuation plan in place. You can visit www.floridadisaster.org/getaplan to create a personalized plan. It only takes a few minutes and could be the difference between life and death.

Touch-A-Truck Event Appeals to Kids of All Ages COMMUNITY NEWS

BY DEBBY TEICH

M

any kids dream of climbing inside some of the big trucks they pass on the road. On June 24, they will have an opportunity to see, touch, and explore their favorite big trucks and vehicles, as well as to meet some of the people who drive them at the Annual City of Cooper City Touch-A-Truck event. Over 2,000 people are expected to attend the event, from 9am to noon, at the Cooper City Sports Complex, located on the corner of Stirling Rd. and Palm Avenue. Admission is free. “This is a great event for children to learn about the vehicles, the people who drive them and what they are used for,” said Felicia Trainor, Recreation Program Specialist. “While it may be quite a few years before these kids can see over a steering wheel, this event provides a hands on, interactive experience, as children are able to climb aboard vehicles of all shapes and sizes.” Last year, there were nearly 40 trucks and vehicles on display from a variety of governmental agencies and private collectors. Fire and Police Departments provided SWAT, Hazmat equipment trucks, a Smart car with Macie (the BSO search dog), an air boat, police fleet services, fire paramedics and fire trucks, including a restored fire truck that the children were allowed to paint. Members of the Public Works and Utilities Departments were present and Waste Management showed kids how a dump truck crushes the trash. There was a lawn mower, blower, pressure washer, vac con truck, and front end loader, as well as a Publix freezer semi, seven military vehicles, Eloise the musical fire engine and more. Organizers are expecting similar vehicles this year. “Last year, I got to meet a real fireman, climb inside of the truck, and sit in the driver’s seat,” said 6-year-old Brandon Becker, who attended last year’s event. “It was the best day of my life.” Children will also have an opportunity to enjoy a variety of fun activities, such as a bounce house, obstacle course, rock wall, coloring, and face painting.

Kids enjoyed the 2016 Touch-A-Truck event.

Organizers are still looking for companies that want to display their vehicles. Children must be accompanied by an adult. For information or to display a vehicle, call 954-434-4300, ext. 233 or send an email to ftrainor@coopercityfl.org.

“Wings For Wishes” Raises $80,000 to Benefit Make-A-Wish BY DEBBY TEICH

E

very 16 hours, Make-A-Wish Southern Florida grants a wish to a child with lifethreatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength, and joy. The Davie-based organization relies on fundraisers, corporate support and donations from the public to help pay for the wishes, which cost an average of $5,000. The money raised from this year’s 3rd Annual “Wings For Wishes” Block Party will help grant wishes for 16 local children. The event raised $80,000, with 100% of the proceeds benefitting Make-AWish Southern Florida. “Raising money for an amazing cause is always rewarding, but also doing it in a unique way by bringing local businesses, politicians and law enforcement together is rewarding and enduring,” said Make-A-Wish Champion Brian R. Exelbert, who co-founded Wings for Wishes in 2015 with Gal Bensaadon. Exelbert and Bensaadon developed the family-friendly block party format to enhance the experience for the crowd-favorite wing eating competition, which was held at Sports Grill South Miami. It featured 71 teams of four hungry wing-eaters. For the first round of the competition, each team was required to devour a tray of 50 wings as fast as possible. The six fastest teams who made it to the second round were then required to finish 25 wings as quickly as possible. The winning team,

Kobayashi, finished their final tray of wings in just 54 seconds. The event also featured tasting stations, live music, a DJ, and plenty of fun games for kids and adults. Since its inception in 1983, the Southern Florida chapter has grown from granting one wish to granting 539 wishes in fiscal year 2016. Whether a child chooses to go somewhere exotic, meet an adored celebrity, have a treasured gift or be a dream occupation for the day, each wish experience is tailor-made to exceed all expectations. The chapter’s vision is to make every eligible child’s wish come true. Make-A-Wish Southern Florida recently granted its 11,000th wish to 15-year old Madison White of Pembroke Pines, who has been undergoing chemo for osteosarcoma (bone cancer). She loves to ride horses and has been taking riding lessons. At a horse show, she was presented with “Cos,” a former thoroughbred that has been retrained as a jumper. Her wish to be able to compete in jumping events had come true. “It was a very emotional day,” said Jacqueline White, Madison’s mother. “I am extremely happy for her. She has been through so much and to have this means a lot.” For information, call 954-967-WISH or visit www.sfla.wish.org.

avie Golf & Country Club, located at 8201 Nova Drive, offers several ways for youth and adults to participate in golf programs this summer. Town of Davie Sponsors Independence Day Fireworks & Family Fun Day BY DEBBY TEICH

O

n July 4th, Davie residents can celebrate the holiday at the Town of Davie’s Independence Day Fireworks and Family Fun Day. The festivities begin with Fun at the Pool, from 10am-4pm, at the Pine Island Pool. Activities include a free swim and inner tube water polo, as well as the Fun Foam Spray with the Davie Fire Department (11am), Dive-in Treasure Hunt (1pm) and Watermelon Eating Contest (3pm). From 4pm-9:30pm, the festivities continue at Bamford Sports Complex. Throughout the event, there will be kids’ arts and crafts, food trucks, face painting, bounce houses, train rides, craft vendors and more. There will also be kids interactive games (4:30pm), cake cutting with free cake while supplies last (6:30pm), live music (7pm) and fireworks (9pm). Although the Fourth of July is traditionally known as a fun holiday, it is also the one that typically has the most fires. Often, it is children and teens that are injured, since they do not know how to use fireworks safely. According to the American Red Cross, the safest way to enjoy fireworks is to attend a public fireworks show put on by professionals, such as this one. If someone is setting fireworks off at home, the American Red Cross recommends that they follow these safety steps: ▸▸ Never give fireworks to small children, and always follow the instructions on the packaging. ▸▸ Keep a supply of water close by as a precaution. ▸▸ Make sure the person lighting fireworks always wears eye protection. ▸▸ Light only one firework at a time and never attempt to relight “a dud.” ▸▸ Store fireworks in a cool, dry place away from children and pets. ▸▸ Never throw or point a firework toward people, animals, vehicles, structures or flammable materials. ▸▸ Leave any area immediately where untrained amateurs are using fireworks. No alcoholic beverages, guns, or fireworks, including sparklers, are permitted at any time during the event or inside the park. For information, visit www.davie-fl.gov.

Schott Communities Clients Model Spring Fashions BY DEBBY TEICH

S

COMMUNITY NEWS

chott Communities recently honored their exceptional clients at a sold-out event to raise funds to support the mission of the organization. During the Models of Inspiration Fashion Show & Luncheon, Schott clients modeled spring fashions. The event raised over $41,000, which will be used for Schott programs and services, such as the Adult Day Training Program, Schott Saturdays, the Art Program and Computer Programs. While over 220 guests were enjoying the Silent Auction and Luncheon, ASM Beauty World Academy provided complimentary make-up application and hair styling for the Schott clients and Saks Fifth Avenue Off Fifth at Sawgrass Mall provided clothing. Each participant was announced individually as he/she walked down the run way to model their outfits. “This inspiring event celebrated the determination and positive outlook on life of the Schott Communities special needs clients,” said Jerry Cohen, Director of Annual Fund and Stewardship. “Not only were the attendees excited, but the client models were very enthusiastic on the runway and afterwards. They cannot wait to be part of the annual fashion show next year.” In addition to honoring the models, this year’s event also honored St. Bonaventure Catholic Church, St. Edward Catholic Church, St. Mark Catholic Church and St. Maximilian Kolbe Catholic Church for their continuous support to Schott Communities. Schott Communities’ programs assist participants in developing skills for independent living, promote selfsufficiency, and provide social, recreational and spiritual opportunities to enhance their quality and enjoyment of life. The agency continues to strive to create an environment of caring and dignity for persons who are deaf or disabled by encouraging and challenging them to grow in self-acceptance and independence.

These are some of the Schott clients that modeled spring fashions.

The City of Cooper City hosted a Teen Twilight Egg Hunt for Cooper City teens in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades at the Pool and Tennis Center. During the free fun-filled event, teens used flashlights to search in the dark for special hidden eggs. Local Hams to Demonstrate Their Emergency Communication Skills COMMUNITY NEWS

BY DEBBY TEICH

I

n a real emergency or natural disaster, conventional power and communication grids almost always lose service, often for extended periods. Amateur radio operators (a.k.a. “hams”) fill this void by volunteering their time and equipment to operate from emergency sites and relay messages from the disaster area. On June 24 and 25 at Markham Park, the public is invited to see local hams demonstrate their emergency communication skills, as they operate portable stations throughout Broward County. The Davie/Cooper City Amateur Radio Club, along with the Broward Amateur Radio Club, will host Field Day at the park’s main corporate pavilion. American Radio Relay League’s Field Day is the most popular on-the-air event held annually in the U.S. More than 35,000 radio amateurs will gather at remote locations with their clubs, groups or simply with friends to operate their portable Field Day stations without using commercial electric power. The goal is to contact other amateur stations using only emergency power - batteries, solar cells or gas generators. There will also be plenty of visiting and picnicking, as well as demonstrations of various aspects of amateur radio, including “Get-On-The-Air” stations that allow the general public to make radio contacts around the world. “Field Day is a great time to explore some of the cool ways hams can communicate with others,” said Sandy Cowan (KK4OXM), Davie resident who has been a ham operator since 2013. There are over 7,000 active Amateur Radio clubs in the U.S. Most, including the Davie/Cooper City Amateur Club (call sign: NA4DC), are ARRL-affiliated amateur radio clubs. Established in 2010, the Davie/Cooper City club has approximately 100 members. Meetings are held on the first Monday of the month, at 7:30pm, at Moose Lodge, 4483 SW 64th Avenue in Davie. Licensed amateur radio operators

and prospective amateurs are welcome to join. Annual dues are only $10. It is a “radio active” club, which means members operate as much as they can. They arrange monthly outings to make high frequency contacts, host a bi-weekly 2m net, participate in the Amateur Radio Relay League’s annual “Field Day,” and occasionally operate special events. Every other Thursday, at 7pm, the club holds a technical assistance net on one of the local repeaters. Hams can ask for assistance with any technical issues they are having with equipment and installation and the other net members try to assist. The Amateur Radio Service is regulated by the Federal Communications Commission. Licensing is required and ensures that people operate correctly, safely and within the rules that govern amateur radio. Anyone can be licensed as an amateur, as long as they are not an official representative of a foreign government. Students do not need any real knowledge of radio, physics, electronics or radio operation or their own radio, which range in cost from $100 to $10,000. For information on the Davie/Cooper City Amateur Club, visit www.dcarc.club. For information on the Field Day, visit www.arrl. org/field-day.

Davie Residents Participate in 21st Annual Waterway Clean-Up BY DEBBY TEICH

T

he message is clear. Davie residents are proud of their community and they want to make sure that it is litter-free. Davie residents and civic groups recently participated in the Town of Davie and Central Broward Water Control District’s 21st Annual Waterway Clean-up and Trash Splash, a public awareness campaign to keep the waterways clean. “The Town of Davie Waterway Cleanup provides a personal experience connecting volunteers with the issue of trash pollution,” said Jeff Pohlman, Assistant Director for the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department. “After participating in the Waterway Cleanup, volunteers recognize first-hand the need

to keep our waterways clean and free of debris and dispose of waste in the right way.” The effort started with a group of volunteers gathering on a Saturday to clean up the waterways and has grown into a major event involving school clubs, boy and girl scouts, religious and non-profit organizations, local families and individuals. Volunteers included groups, families, and individuals, who pitched in to help clean and pick up trash from the canal banks. They were assigned to a small area along the C-11 Canal, between the Florida Turnpike and Flamingo Road. In return for their efforts, participants received a

free t-shirt and water, as well as service hours. They also got a ticket to attend the “Trash Splash” pool party, which was held after the cleanup at the Davie Pine Island Aquatics Center. There was free food and refreshments, as well as, a D.J. spinning tunes all afternoon. The public awareness campaign seems to be working. In the past, volunteers found many large items, such as cars, refrigerators, car tires, and air conditioners. Thanks to their efforts, each year they are finding fewer large items and less trash. Cooper City High School Students Are “Building” A Better Community BY DEBBY TEICH

T

hanks to the efforts of students at Cooper City High School, many now have a new place they can call “home.” They have been partnering with Habitat for Humanity to support its vision of a world where everyone has a decent and affordable place to live. “Cooper Cares,” which was formed this school year, has 30 members. Since this was the inaugural year of the club, its focus was on building membership and volunteering. Club members volunteered at the Habitat for Humanity Restore and builds; snow-cone socials; and Feeding Children Everywhere. They also raised $700 through Homecoming event sales and Menchie’s Night. Next year, they hope to raise enough to sponsor a home. They will partner with other schools to organize a color run and raise the additional funds needed. “Most of the members joined because they wanted to get involved in a club that was different from others at our school,” said sophomore Alina Pereyra, club president. “It gives students the opportunity to be involved in the community and reach out to those who need their help. It is something that they can actively participate in.” Alina has been volunteering with Habitat for a few years and has seen the benefits of the organization. She started the club to get

her peers involved as well. “I’ve seen first-hand how beneficial Habitat for Humanity is,” said Alina. “It gives people in our community an extra boost and a chance to better their lives. It also gives volunteers a chance to make a difference in other’s lives, which builds their character. One of Habitat’s mottos is that they are a ‘hand-up not a handout organization’ and sometimes that’s what people need. Everyone needs help to get on their feet sometimes and contributing to someone else’s journey not only impacts the future homeowner’s lives, but those volunteering.” Sophomore Dillon Weiss, vice president, has been to building sites in the past year and assisted in the Habitat ReStore multiple times. “Cooper Cares is an amazing club that offers students opportunities to become involved in their community and grow as a person,” said Dillon. “It supports a great cause and works with wonderful people to make other people’s lives better. Habitat provides shelter assistance, education, training and partnerships to the affected individuals who find themselves in unthinkable situations. By physically volunteering at build sites, fundraising money, and organizing my peers into a group that supports Habitat, I was able to strengthen my community, help others in need, and better myself as a person.”

Griffin Elementary Teacher Uses Storytelling in Her Classroom BY DEBBY TEICH

S

usie Ruder of Cooper City is able to combine her love of teaching and storytelling in her second grade classroom at Griffin Elementary. She recently wrote two books and frequently shares the lessons from them with her students. “I have been a storyteller all of my life,” said Ruder. “I started writing at an early age. I kept a diary and journaled through my life. I love teaching through my stories, because I am able to make the lessons I am trying to teach, personal. I show the kids that the things they go through and feel happens to others too, both the good and the bad. As long as they learn from them, it is a good thing.” “The Train Ride” is the first book in a series of three. The story is about two children from different races who meet on a train ride bound for New York City in the 1960s during segregation. Despite the obstacles the children face, they are successful in nurturing a friendship when they realize they are more alike than they are different. The facts are true and the characters in the story are real. In fact, she is even the girl in the story, Jessie. This school year, Superintendent Robert Runcie read to the book to all of second grade students at Griffin Elementary. Her second book, “The Crest Hotel,” was released in the fall. It takes place during the Art Deco period on South Beach. It is about loss and the relationship between a young girl and her beloved grandmother. Her third book, “The Pink Party Dress,” is about friendship and bullying. It will be available in the fall. “All of my books teach a life lesson,” said Ruder. “The strongest message I am sending is that ‘where there’s a will, there’s a way.’ This is exactly what I believe to be true.”

Ruder says that she teaches her students what are often referred to as “Ruderisms.” They are sayings that the students can repeat when they need to get through something. Some examples include: “Every time you make a mistake, you learn something new.” and “When you give kindness to others, it comes back to you.” Throughout her 36 year teaching career, Ruder has taught several grade levels and many different types of students, including children and adults with learning disabilities. One of her fondest memories is teaching a 60-year-old man to read. “Teaching is a gift,” said Ruder. “I am preparing the kids for their journey ahead. They are my passion and I teach them everything I know and more. It is a huge responsibility to have an audience of excited children who hold on to your every word, each day, five days a week. I don’t want to miss the chance to teach them something they may need later in life.” Ruder’s books are available at some Barnes and Noble stores and can be ordered online from Barnes and Noble and Amazon. She does author visits at schools and libraries.

HEALTH AND WELLNESS

Functional Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement

Candida Overgrowth – A Common Condition That Is Easily Overlooked BY JEAN-CLAUDE NERETTE

N

umerous studies have linked gut health to overall well-being. In the last decade, scientists have paid close attention to the gut/ brain connection, realizing that bacteria regulate important brain functions and that stress, anxiety and depression could all be related to what happens in your gut. But what happens in your gut can affect your daily life in many other ways. Keep in mind that it is important to keep a healthy balance of bacteria in your gut, but there’s the good and the bad. Of course, diet is directly linked to what happens in your gut, but what if you are making healthy nutritional choices, even exercising, and still feel tired or suffer from headaches and mood swings? The problem can still originate in your gut, and you could be suffering from a condition known as Candida overgrowth. Candida albicans is a yeast that lives in the human body and its function is to recognize and destroy harmful bacteria - a healthy body will actually have millions of it. However, if friendly bacteria in your body are decreasing due to the use of antibiotics or poor nutritional choices, for example, this imbalance creates the perfect conditions for yeast proliferation or Candida overgrowth—the underlying cause of chronic, difficult to diagnose health problems. Unfortunately, many of us have a “sick” gut from years of abusing our bodies through poor nutrition and unhealthy habits. In many cases, a healthy nutrition plan alone may not be enough to treat your symptoms if the root of the problem is unknown. In fact, in order to treat Candida effectively, it is vital to find its source of origin. Modern medicine does a good job at recognizing disease and treating acute conditions, but fails at identifying common syndromes such as Candida overgrowth, due to the wide range of symptoms that can be subtle or mimic other conditions. The consequences of a sick gut can be manifested by numerous symptoms including rash, bloating, weight loss, diarrhea/constipation, headaches, anxiety/depression, insomnia and low immunity. Functional medicine doctors are more successful at recognizing and diagnosing conditions as Candida, because we look at the person’s physiology, genetic and environmental factors and not just at an isolated set of symptoms. A number of factors increase the risk of yeast overgrowth. They include: ▸▸ Chronic stress ▸▸ Alcohol ▸▸ Diabetes ▸▸ Diet high in simple sugars ▸▸ Poor sleep habits ▸▸ Lack of physical activity Treating Candida successfully requires a comprehensive, systematic approach including dietary changes and supplements, such as probiotics. Working with a functional medicine doctor will ensure you get the correct diagnosis and individualized treatment. What works for one person may not work for another. If you feel you may be suffering from Candida, at Bellissimo Medical we can offer guidance to bring relief and accelerate your healing. Call us today and schedule your free consultation at 954384-8989. Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette is Board Certified in both Internal Medicine and Functional Medicine and Stephanie Muniz Nerette is a Board Certified Nurse Practitioner and a Diplomate to the Board of Anti-Aging Medicine. Western High Students Win 1st Place at Broward SECME-STEM Olympiad

SCHOOL NEWS

BY DEBBY TEICH

S

tudents from Western High School recently put their science, technology, engineering and math skills to the test in the daylong SECME-STEM Olympiad. Approximately 1,000 students participated in the competition and Western’s team won 1st place overall at the high school level. Twelve students from Western High School attended the event. They participated in the following competitions: Bionic Hand, Generator (2nd place), Bridge (1st, 5th place) and Banner (2nd place). “It was truly an enlightening and enriching experience that taught students about writing a research paper, designing and building models, drawing technical diagrams, and working together as a team,” said Magda Murphy-Bozkurt, team advisor. “The students are being imparted with a strong academic foundation, and the knowledge to solve complex problems, and critical thinking. I could not be more proud of these students! We have the next generation of scientists and engineers in the making!” The students are part of the WHS STEM Rocketry program, which involves close to 35 students from 9th to 12th grade. In the program, they design, build and launch water and air powered rockets, as well as low and high powered model rockets. They also enjoy building and flying drones, space-shuttle simulation challenges and more. The STEM Rocketry research students have the opportunity to participate in a variety of local, state and national competitions, such as NASA Student Launch, Team America Rocketry Challenge, Florida Student Astronaut Challenge, Florida Science and Engineering Fair (and ISEF), Broward SECME Olympiad and BCPS Drone Challenge. They are also involved in outreach programs throughout the community. Hunter Ginn, 11th grade, participated in the SECME-STEM Olympiad. He plans to pursue a career in Mechanical Aerospace Engineering and hopes to work for NASA.

“The SECME-STEM Olympiad is an amazing learning experience,” said Hunter. “Last year, I was in the water rocket competition, where I learned about the importance of the center of gravity and wstability of a rocket. With this newly gained knowledge, we were able to apply it to our other competitions involving model rockets. This year, I was in the generator competition, and I learned a lot about electromagnetic induction and physics.” Kathryn Smith, 10th grade, also participated. She plans to become a chemist or an engineer. “You never really understand what or why something does or doesn’t work until you have to make it yourself and test it,” said Kathryn. “It’s also a great feeling to have spent so much time planning and building something and to be so proud of what you and your team made. It’s even better when you win! Our generation is responsible for building the future. Competitions like this give so many kids the opportunity to see how fun and interesting STEM is and maybe pursue a career in it.”

NSU University School Students Get a Lesson in Leadership

SCHOOL NEWS

BY DEBBY TEICH

C

oaches, religious figures, government officials, CEO’s, news anchors and other successful professionals recently met with NSU University School’s fifth graders for breakfast. The event capped off a unit on leadership, where students found out firsthand what it takes to stand at the front. It was also another opportunity to interact with community leaders. “Regardless of what our NSU University School students go on to study, or which field they choose to dedicate their life’s work, it is critical for them to start learning now what it means to be an effective leader,” said Adam Carswell, Lower School Director. “It is our hope that this important unit positions them to go on to live life with joy and purpose as leaders in their fields.” Throughout the unit, students participated in a variety of activities, as they learned about the importance of giving back and impacting change, and that leadership comes in all forms. They engaged in specialized discussion forums; completed research surrounding chosen topics; prepared for and ran a business at an offsite location; learned and practiced interview techniques; and much more. Students also attended a three-day trip with their peers, which provided opportunities to grow their independence, overcome obstacles, collaborate together,

bond as a 5th grade cohort, and learn about leadership. They participated in a variety of activities including a challenging high ropes course, zip lining, kayaking and more. For many, the most difficult part was leaving all of their technology at home, including their phones. “Some of the most authentic learning took place through actually immersing themselves in service to others through outside community service,” said Lori Czerenda, 5th grade team leader. “It’s all about realizing the many facets of leadership and empowering the students to see themselves as leaders who can and do give back to their ‘community’ in many ways each and every day. A good leader is someone who leads by example.” The leadership unit ended with the breakfast. In preparation, students identified local community leaders and interviewed them to find out how they impacted change. Next, they composed an essay that captured what they learned through their interactions. With the guidance of their teachers, students prepared for the breakfast by discussing the art of conversation and reviewing manners and etiquette. Students and their chosen leaders enjoyed a formal breakfast together. Students shared their essays; continued their conversations about leadership; and listened to keynote speaker Jack Seiler, Mayor of Ft. Lauderdale.

ver the last five decades, fluoride has been added to community water supplies across the country. As a result, we have seen a 50% reduction of cavities in these communities, as well as a 50% reduction in the dental healthcare costs for children. The numbers are even higher when its use is combined with proper diet, oral hygiene techniques, and use of topical fluorides. Still, the dental community searches for other methods of reducing the incidence of “caries” (cavities). Such a finding would be most helpful to those unable or unwilling to make use of fluoride. One of the more promising substances is xylitol. Xylitol is a sugar substitute derived from agricultural products. It has been around since the 1960’s, but has not been tested for use in humans for the purpose of oral health until the 1990’s. Most of the studies use chewing gum as the delivery system of choice. Optimal results are gained with three daily uses. This dosing achieves a reduction in plaque formation, reduces acid production, and interferes with the production of the specific bacteria which initiate cavity formation. Cumulatively, these attributes result in cavity reduction.

What seems most promising is the use of xylitol by new parents to reduce cavity formation in their newborns. Babies are not born with the bacteria, which cause cavities. These bacteria are naturally transmitted to the mouth of a child by a parent or caregiver. This usually occurs through everyday contact, such as sharing of food or blowing on a hot spoon. The use of xylitol has been shown to delay the transmission of some of the most deleterious bacteria and resulted in a decreased incidence of cavities for these children. In one particular study, xylitol chewing by mothers beginning three months after the delivery of a child for a period of two years resulted in a decreased incidence of cavities in the children till an average age of six years. Of course, with such positive results many new xylitol products have been launched into the marketplace. Companies are manufacturing a number of products, such as mints, mouthwash and toothpaste. However, the only method of delivery clinically proven to have these effects is chewing gum. Personally, I can’t wait to bite into the first xylitol infused ice cream sundae!

LEGALLY SPEAKING

The Process of Hiring an Attorney BY EVAN BARON

I

am quite aware that the last thing most people would ever want to do in their lifetime is hire an attorney. Except for the purchase of a home or business, for the most part the hiring of an attorney is necessary only when a crisis occurs. It could be due to an accident, a run in with the law, a death in the family or a divorce. On occasion, individuals may feel as if an attorney is not really necessary. Unfortunately, handling a legal matter without advice from an attorney can often mean unwanted results. So how does someone decide if they need an attorney and, if so, who should they hire? I have met with several individuals who have either attempted to handle their particular matter without the assistance of an attorney or they have been unhappy with the representation they have received from the attorney they in fact did hire. In most of these situations I was not able to assist them in “undoing” the unwanted result. For the most part, we do not get a “do over” in court. Once a decision is made by a judge, it is in most instances a final decision. The fact that an individual feels that his/her attorney did not properly represent him/her will not be considered grounds to overturn the court’s decision. Neither will the fact that a person was unrepresented in court. Unless you are prepared to file an appeal, most people get one chance to present their case and obtain their desired results.

The hiring of a lawyer is an important decision that should not be based solely upon advertisements. Before you decide, ask us to send you free written information about our qualifications and experience.

If the decision has been made to retain an attorney, how do you choose the one that is right for you? In my opinion you should look for someone who has experience in the field of law that concerns your case. In most instances, however, the most important factor is cost. In some areas of practice the total fee for representation can be determined at the beginning of the case. In criminal matters, there is usually a set fee quoted; depending on the severity of the offense charged. In personal injury matters, fees are usually based upon the amount recovered, with a percentage going to the attorney. These fees are called contingency fees. In family law, matter’s fees are usually determined by the time necessary to finalize the case. This often presents a problem when I discuss fees at my initial consultation. Understandably, a prospective client wants to know what a divorce is going to cost. I explain that since my fees are based upon my time, I cannot predict the total fee unless I know the number of hours a case will take to get to completion. Not knowing the total cost of representation can make a person insecure. A retainer or down payment is required to get the case started. It is made clear to the new client that this is only a down payment and is not necessarily the total cost. Each case is different and each attorney may have different billing practices. It is best to “shop around” and find the attorney who is best suited for your particular set of circumstances. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. If you have any questions concerning this issue or any other family law matter, call the office at 954-385-9160.

herever I go, people are always asking me about our market. South Florida has the most active Real Estate market -- we sell weather, sea and lifestyle. Again, inventories have returned to historically “low” levels! According to NAR, homes in March went under contract within 34 days. Jonathan Smoke, Chief Economist of Realtor.com, stated: “We started the year with the lowest inventory of homes available for sale that we’ve ever seen on realtor.com. While we did see inventory grow 2% in February, total inventory was down 11% over last year.” Many homeowners underestimate the amount of equity they currently have in their homes. According to Fannie Mae study, 37% of homeowners believe that they have more than 20% equity in their homes. CoreLogic’s latest Equity Report tells us that 78.9% actually do! Many homeowners who undervalue their equity may feel trapped, which may be contributing to the lack of inventory in the market. Now that the stock market is up and our economy is strengthening, you may want to consider selling and upsizing or downsizing. Lawrence Yun, Chief Economist of NAR, stated: “A growing share of homeowners in NAR’s first quarter HOME survey said now is a good time to sell, but until an increase in listings actually occurs, home prices will continue to move hastily.” Inventory dictates our market and our prices. What about our neck of the woods? Since January of 2017: Davie

or nearly 40 years, I’ve personally witnessed Broward grow into the enormous economic engine, tourism hotspot and all-around great place to live that it is today. This tremendous growth and prosperity, no doubt, was fueled by its residents - a vibrant melting pot of diverse people, cultures and communities. Historically, public safety agencies often failed to adequately resemble the diverse communities they protected, and they struggled to connect with them. This has been an issue nationwide. When law enforcement fails to mirror its diverse communities, it can often cause a breakdown in trust— especially in the aftermath of tragic incidents. When I first took office in 2013, I directed a significant cultural change within the Broward Sheriff’s Office to prioritize diversity within our ranks. To serve the citizens of Broward to the best of our abilities, we must look like the citizens we police. We must ensure that the deputies on the street protecting our community are also protecting their own community.

Today, the percentage of minorities employed in sworn positions at BSO is proudly greater than the percentage of minorities in Broward County’s population as a whole. And that diversity is growing throughout every corner of the agency. BSO has boosted the percentage of black employees by three percent, including law enforcement deputies, where they had been underrepresented in the past. And fire rescue, traditionally nationwide one of the least racially-diverse public safety services, is also becoming more diverse. A majority of the new firefighters hired in the last four years have been a combination of minorities and women. And, impressively, minorities hold senior command positions today – reaching to the highest ranks – throughout BSO. BSO also proudly employs many strong, dedicated women throughout the agency in sworn and non-sworn positions alike. They play a vital role in all aspects, and their presence at times brings a different and welcome perspective to public safety. We also recognize and celebrate the positive impact of our lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender personnel within our ranks and appreciate their many contributions to our agency’s successes. We have diversified BSO by creating a dedicated recruitment team that reaches out to minority communities, including participation in job fairs, in the schools and through other proactive outreach opportunities. We have made great strides and will continue to do so through our hiring process. But make no mistake. Each of these men and women have earned their positions through their hard work and dedication. I will always base personnel decisions on the qualifications of the individual and the skills he or she brings to the job. When you hire or promote the best person for the right position, diversity happens naturally. There is still work to be done, but I am thrilled at how far we have come. Today, BSO is more inclusive than ever before, and our diverse workforce is building bridges across our multicultural community that is leading to a safer and smarter Broward County. Davie Update

M

any people seem concerned that we will lose our open space identity as our population continues to grow. I am here to tell you that our open space program is stronger than ever. We far exceed our required numbers. The typical level of service for parks and recreation land is between three and five acres per 1,000 population. Davie set our level of service at 10 acres per 1,000. Presently, based on our population of 101,000, the town would need to provide 1,001 acres to meet our level of service. All parks and open space acreage in Davie is 1,926, so you can see we haven’t abandoned our priority. District 1 has 17 sites at 342 acres. With the addition of two acres to the Betty Booth Roberts Park, our open space numbers in District 1 are on the rise. District 2 has six sites totaling 261 acres, which equates to a level of service of 11 acres per 1,000. District 3 has seven sites that account for 427 acres or 18 acres per 1,000. The higher number is boosted due to the county’s Tree Tops Park, which is one of our largest parks. District 4 has 19 sites equaling 895 acres with a level of service of 17 acres per 1,000 residents. District 4 includes two more county parks, Long Key Nature Preserve and Vista View Park, as well as the future Farm Park and Van Kirk Wetland Preserve. On another note, some people have expressed concern that the development of the old Palma Nova property was too intense. Let me share some numbers with you. The mobile home park had 940 units housing 2,820 residents. The property had a taxable value of $15 million. The new residential and industrial development has 1,800 residents with a taxable value of $250 million dollars and growing. Davie Road is going through a renaissance. When it is complete, we will see a revitalized downtown. We have approved five projects, with estimated project costs of $125 million, which will bring projected revenue of $1,977,409 to the CRA. Enhancements to the rodeo arena will allow us to increase the types of events offered. The enhancements, which include widening sidewalks, slowing traffic with calming methods, and adding a landscaped median, will create a vibrant downtown as a destination as opposed to being a pass through. The addition of a number of great restaurants and top notch concerts at the arena will bring us together in a walkable entertainment center. Just remember, dreams do come true if you work at them hard enough. As we enter another budget season, let me remind you that we will be having district community forums so each councilmember can host an event to give you the vision for next year and listen to your input about what you think might be important recommendations for the town to consider for the future. The meetings and locations are as follows: District 1 - Thursday, May 4, Town Council Chambers; District 2 - Tuesday, May 16, Pine Island Multi-Purpose Center; District 3 - Monday, May 8, Pine Island Multi-Purpose Center; District 4 - Thursday, May 25, Robbins Lodge. As we enter the spring and summer season with longer days, we need to be extremely careful on the streets. Horseback riders, bicyclists, walkers and even golf carts are more prevalent and extreme care needs to be taken. SLOW DOWN, DON”T TEXT, and most of all use CAUTION. Speed kills. Don’t be the problem, be the solution and follow the rules of the road. I look forward to hearing from you. Call me to say hello, tell me what the town is doing right, or share your problems or concerns. Check out our web site to see what great events and activities we have in store for the entire family. Shoulder Injuries Treated with Arthroscopy Heal Faster with Less Pain New surgical techniques and better pain management enable easier recovery

Vani Sabesan, MD Orthopaedic Surgeon

Remember Operation, an electronic board game in which one wayward movement causes other body parts to spasm and a loud buzzer to sound?

Just like in the board game, an injured rotator cuff can wreak havoc with other body parts – and every day activities like writing and eating – because it’s the rotator cuff that allows us to lift and rotate the arm. The rotator cuff is composed of four muscles plus attached tendons and other tissue in the shoulder. It holds the arm in the joint and helps attach the humerus (long bone in the upper arm) to the elbow, neck and torso. Rotator cuff tendons can tear from age, overuse, traumatic injury, or a fall. When it is injured, even reaching for a book can be painful, and a tennis match or golf outing would be nearly impossible. Understandably, shoulder injuries used to be among the most dreaded by weekend warriors and professional athletes alike. In fact, a rotator cuff injury was often a career-ending incident in sports. “Shoulder patients can experience much quicker recovery and much less pain using

the arthroscopic techniques developed in recent years,” said Vani Sabesan, MD, a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon with subspecialty training in the upper extremities. “Today, my patients return to their preferred activities quickly.”

“Prior to arthroscopy, rotator cuff repair required months of post-operative rehabilitation and many patients avoided the surgery,” said Dr. Sabesan. “Using arthroscopy, we can help our patients return to a fuller life without constant pain.”

Instead of a large incision circumventing the shoulder, Dr. Sabesan uses an arthroscope, a pencil-sized instrument with a tiny camera at the tip, to examine and repair the tissues in the joint. Recovery is quicker, and less painful when compared to an open procedure.

Arthroscopy can treat other ailments including shoulder instability or dislocation, torn biceps tendon, bone spur, inflammation or damage caused by rheumatoid arthritis, a torn or damaged cartilage ring (labrum) or ligaments, shoulder impingement syndrome, and arthritis of the collarbone. Surgeons also use arthroscopes to treat knees, hips, ankles, elbows and wrists.

Using arthroscopy also minimizes swelling, and allows patients to begin their postoperative rehabilitation sooner. In the last few years, other innovations have made the recovery process easier, including surgical improvements and better post-operative pain management. According to Dr. Sabesan, who is a team physician for the Florida Panthers, sutures today use new materials that do not require intra-operative knots. Overall, the procedures are less abrasive to the tissue. New, long-acting pain medications used following surgery last for 72 to 96 hours. Often patients need little or no pain medication after their initial recovery due to the new techniques.

A painful shoulder condition or injury can impede writing, eating, dressing, hair brushing, and other activities of daily living. With newer techniques and appropriate rehabilitation, arthroscopic surgery can fully restore movement in the shoulder. Consult with a board-certified subspecialty orthopaedic surgeon to see if you are a candidate for arthroscopic surgery. To schedule a consultation with Dr. Sabesan, call 877.287.2963.
