It is with great pride, honour and gratitude, that I introduce the third volume of Yenma Yenmalalibyila. I thank all of those who have contributed. Those who have contributed their energies, their time, their monies, to serving and manifesting this Volume. Shadows & Reflections is the theme the undercurrent writing; the poetry, stories, artwork and insights contained within. We embarked upon this volume with a very different approach to the previous.
I would love to give a particular thankyou to Magda for hosting the first in person YEmpower Community Creative Expression session, as well as thank Lucy and Ness for their leadership This session was the platform for the spark of much of the pieces ahead of you. The Creative Expression workshop and session models are very accessible ways to meet in person to create and envision new things, together! During that first Creative Session (of many planned so get involved!), we asked ourselves the question, "what do Shadows and Reflections mean to us?"
I've laid out a few of our sentiments in picture form ahead, but there are many senses to Shadows and Reflections. These include the inner voices that we carry with us, where we interrogate and inflect in different moments. In other senses, it can be the feelings of engulfment or mirroring by others and society.
It is my hope that you reader are inspired by the pieces herein. And that you may be inspired to come on the Yenma Creative journey with us, into the New Year. Let Us Walk together, out of the shades of history and from our reflection pools, and put out our perspectives I invite you to deeply listen - Matt Jeffrey.
"Don't Let Anyone ever tell you that Shadow Work only relates to the 'darkness' What we need to realise is, is that our Shadow is born with us, it follows us, and it will go with us. All our Shadows are all the same colour no matter where you're from or who you are When you project your Shadow onto Mother Nature, she reminds you of how beautiful you are Don't forget it!" Bernard Kelly Edwards, 2022
we need not fear what lies beneath but rather welcome with the same arms and big love that turned them away in the first place. the people around us the environment around us, entire worlds staring back at us.
Welcome readers, contributors, light browsers, and curious cats. You have made it to our section of visual arts and poetry, an exceptional array of stories, experiences, moments, and sentiments. This issue ‘Shadows and Reflections’ has grown into a gloriously diverse interpretation space Touching on the things we push down, or avoid looking at until we’re alone. We hope while walking with us you feel safe to explore an epic collection of works, words and visual enticers from some incredible artists and people. May we inspire you to peer into the mirror of expanding consciousness today.
The Poetry and Visual Arts section of Yenma begins with Matilda’s ‘Man Moves Through Water’ contains Matt’s sticky syntax, (keep an eye out of the hidden meanings) and features some incredible poetic contributions from Matilda, Ness, Lucy, Zachary and Matt which explore deep reflection, emotional turmoil, the sweet sting of melancholy, and give way to honour the truths we reflect on in our own time, the importance of garnering compassion, the creepy feeling of eyes on your back, the fascinating pull that lies within the shadow realm, as well as the clarity and wisdom we can draw from the ebbs of reminisce.
‘
The shadow of grief and loss but the reflections of self worth or even self realisation’ - Zachary Naufahu.
Including stunning visuals, both digital and tangible, that venture into the heartache of unrequited love, and everything that comes along with it Magda touches on the shadow self, and the work that must be done to honour our shadow selves with her thought provoking graphic art
I think the pieces themselves prove the incredible creations that come to fruition once we begin to acknowledge our journey, sit amongst the cobwebs and thread our ideas into the creative matrix, wandering together. We delightedly encourage you to make your way through this incredible edition, invite you to stay a while, and gratefully thank our artists, community and readers for helping breathe life into this beautiful and compelling volume of Yenma

At this immensely pivotal moment in humanity's journey. We are called to access the inner well of power that lives within our spirit, to ensure that no brother or sister is left behind and that the path we walk forward, we walk together. Yenma Yenmalalibyila.
On the 19th of October, Guymbangirr man (and all-round walking legend), Bernard Kelly Edwards agreed to sit in present dialogue with me on Campus, where we yarned on Awabakal Country. Bernard styles himself BKE, and so all of his words following will be marked that way.
Meeting BKE 'incidentally' through a Uni Course at Newcastle was definitely Countrys' well doing He has a wellspring of knowledge around Shadow, or Pabi Dawaandi. We sketch a journey of Dawaandi. The following is our dialogue.
Matthew Jeffrey: Mind if I record bits now?
BKE: You're right!
MJ: ...They tried to get you on the fish hook didn't they?
BKE: I only done the one NLP course and that sustains me for life. I learned about Perceptual Positioning, I learned about Eye Accessing Cues, and I learned about the Timelines that House Solutions from Heavy Traumas. They're the three main tools I brought home from that and I don't need any more of their teachings. You know, this fish is happy to keep swimming. But that there happened in '16, that's when a lot of the Pabi Dawaandi lights had come on. Cause its a course that woke me up! The layers had been peeled back. I realised I need this as much as it needs me.
And when you're in that space of educating, learning, loving, caring, and being accountable to yourself, you use these peoples and places to your advantage in a respectful way.
MJ: I think I've been finding that this year since that trip where could see the Continent from the Plane. Since then I've been on a bit of a rapid fire path, that I didn't realise how easy it could be to properly slip into myself I hadn't realised how I could decide to this one thing, and that would bring this fruit, and then I could decide, I could go to this place, and share this fruit Before I had made it a mental job, running through options before they had happened, whereas now I just am. It's way different Living.
BKE: Do you still run through the options before it happens?
MJ: Sometimes. But before, I was doing it to the point of writhing around in my room, in fear, getting scared Now it's different Last Friday, I went to this thing in Sydney I knew the new leader, Albanese was gonna be there. I just thought, this is my time, I'm gonna go meet him, give him a copy of Yenma, share a community's truth I no longer cared if people thought it was weird. The Event was the Uluru Statement From the Heart civic campaign launch at Marrickville Townhall I thought it was important
MJ: ...Then the next day, I was walking by a beautiful waterfall, and swimming there, and I had a moment of deep gratitude in that pool, near Wondabyne there, the Pindarr Caves, a Darkingjung and Eora site for thousands of years. That kind of thing in just 48 hours very grateful.
BKE: It's a shame he wasn't there to experience it with you
MJ: ...I can't just grab his arm, he's gotta be willing to walk. I feel like I'm knowing when to go to things and when to go home and nurture those environments.
BKE: That's BEV conscioussness (Birds Eye View), that is When you know what is gonna happen when you get to an environment. You know the unchanged patterns, people's behaviour out of their mouths, you know you're supported by one person who's got your back where you are. That's where clear consciouss BEV moments arrive.
Here I am talking about being too busy... I'm just here locking in bloody flights. I gotta go to Melbourne. There's an International Meditation Conference. I've been invited next month to speak about Pabi Dawaandi at this conference, and it's got me fast tracking this application for a passport...
MJ: A passport?
BKE: Yeah, cause I don't know whats gonna happen after. I've gotta have that passport in case there's an invitation given to go somewhere.
MJ: I see, preparing for an eventuality?
BKE: There you go! Wrapping all these up into the one yarn. Now that wrapping up is all being gathered, or held, or nutured by the language of expectation. I'm expect to present at the Conference! A big thing! That's a given! But there's a flow on expectation of reciprocity that I would like to engage with people who can help support me getting over to other countries to talk about Pabi Dawaandi So that comes in strong as an expectation But then it dissovles, when you empty it... If this cup (dings cup), was called Expectation, I have to empty, for it to be filled anew with conversations, and networks, with you or them, in an environment that'll frame the whole manifestation folder of that particular time. And that's very forward thinking, but in this day and age, you need to integrate in a particular way, where its supports where you came from. And on the 15th of next month (November), I would have come from this space, and this conversation here!
You know I used to live at Mannering Park. My office was in Morriset, then I had another office at Cessnock, and then another at Muswellbrook, and then another office at Windsor, at Parklea, and Mullabar. They were all correctional facilities. My pre post release officer was at Morriset. Monday I'd travel out to Cessnock, come home. Tuesday I'd travel out Muswellbrook, come home. Wednesday I'd travel South out to Windsor, Penrith. Thursday was Parklea, and then Friday was Long Bay, at Mullabar, come home again and rest.
MJ: ...Wow. Do they make people work at these facilities? Cause I heard that the other way. I saw this stat, it made me think, is this really happening, that they're almost forcing prisoners to work for these private companies?
BKE: Yeah, the prisoners got to work.
MJ: ...Fuck. That's the same system in here (taps H.V Evatt '"Rum Rebellion" book.) isn't it brother?
BKE: It has not changed (taps the same book) It has not changed one bit They are getting 7 bucks an hour. You know, they are under constant control. But I have a weapon that can destroy them in a heartbeat!
MJ: Love?
BKE: (Both laugh). Yeah... the rates of pay haven't changed. But the really exciting thing is, is that once the holidays are over with TAFE, I could be moving in to working in the Grafton Correctional Centre, bringing Pabi Dawaandi into my work.
(Both realises that we should finally delve into the insights of Dawaandi)
BKE: Is this on record? (Yes) Oh is it? Well You're listening in to BKE here at the University of Newcastle. I've been invited by Matthew to share some insights to Dawaandi and how that can support a sustainable future for yourself, when you see reflections of yourself, wherever you're sitting, wherever you are in life. So let's start with the basic knowledge. Dawaandi is a Guymbanggri word with 6 defintions attached to it. The first two defintions are pre colonisation meanings. The first is shadow of person thinking on the shadow of your person. The second one is reflection -- all mirror form can only come from Dawaandi, and Dawaandi can only ever be seen by light
The other 4 defintions are Photo, Video, Film and TV. Eliminate them because they're in daily use, all the time, in this modern world. Now here comes the beautiful gifts of Dawaandi. (Deep breath).
When you are born, Dawaandi is born with you, definition one and definition two. It follows you through this life, and it leaves with you when you go My shadow is different to your shadow. It comes from the same place. Mum's belly. The beautiful thing about Dawaandi, is that it is an ultimate truth teller about yourself. It can never lie to you. The reality is always real and true, when you see reflections of yourself. You cannot outrun your shadow or your reflection. And my shadow and your shadow is the same colour so see you later Racism! Anyone that dare challenge you or any of your readers to hating on the colour black, tell them to look at their own shadow. They cannot change the colour of their shadow. That is their spirit they may not wish to see
Another beautiful thing to notice is when you take your shadow from land to water, is you become versatile, you expand and you contract, you're like breath, when you...
BKE: ... on your Dawaandi in water. That is literally you Being of Water, when you see yourself in it You know I asked a group of people one day at a Corporate Workshop in Coffs Harbour. I asked them "When you go from Land to Water, does your Shadow follow you?" And one fella put his hand up and he said "No." I said "Ah okay, I'll come back to you, now Sister over here, whaddiya reckon?" She sad "Yes". I said "Ill come back to you too Sister. But Brother, now you said no. I would like you to tell me, exactly how you detached your shadow from your person, and left it on the beach whilst you went for a swim?" "How did you do that?" And he's thinking and thinking and thinking! And he says "I can't". And I said "Exactly, now that is not a lie, you cannot detach yourself from your shadow " The cool thing about the Shadow is, where do you see it in the water?
When you're in chest high water for example, you only gotta raise your arm out, wait for everything to stop on the surface bubbling, and there, you will see yourself different. Now if the lights are on, it's real shiney, sunny days, you can see it on the sand beds, under your feet, on both planes, the sand, and the surface reflection. So the encouragement for everybody that is tuned in to this yarn, is expand only the one sense of our five of who we are as human beings. It's the sight we are asking for expansion. When I say this, can I speak to it like this... if its true what they say that "you are what you eat, and you are what you drink, is you.", I also believe that what you see is what you are. When I see Matthew here, I see a mirror of myself. When I see all these other beautiful people at this Cafe, I see reflections of myself.
This is true when you see that in the water And when you see your shadow cast that is connected to the casting shadow of the Tree. This is real. Your eyes do not lie when you see things like that. Your Dawaandi is in connection to the Dawaandi of the Tree.
And this is what is often unseen by beautiful people that we ask them to try see it this way, to allow people to wake up. The Planet is asking for People to wakeup. All of our Ancestors that have come before us, are all asking us to wakeup. And the only wake to way to wake up is love And the only way you can see love first is seeing love in yourself Do not worry about anyone else cause they are not important if you cannot hold yourself in importance first. I cannot help Matthew if I cannot help myself. I cannot make the Brother a cuppa if I cannot make my own cuppa. This is a simple language, of common sense, of sight. We can and will as the time comes for the People to stand up, to do nothing but see how beautiful they are.
I told a young sister today whose a Student here at the University, and this too goes for anyone tuned in right now, "If there comes a Time in your days, months, weeks and years, in time you have, and someody is hudging you, labelling you, putting you down to a standard they want to be at, and you've fallen into depression, anxiety, fear, unwantedness, all of these things, please take yourself to the Land. Please stop, and have a look at your shadow, and this will never ever lie to you, because its not born to lie to you. Notice all of its colours that are inside your Shadow. Because essentially, when people try to pull you down, they are speaking to the internal part of yourself. It's only filtered through the external parts. But when its actually gets to the internal part, your heart starts to hurt It starts to feel like "Fuck, no one cares for me anymore, and it's all true". But it's self talk that you get. It's a human conditioning!
BKE: ...The Pathway out of that Human Conditioning to Mother Nature who solutionises everything, is go and stand on Country. Have a look at what is inside your Shadow. And I guarantee you that there will be something beautiful there waiting for you to pickup and see about what is inside of you! Mothers' got a gift always for us Go and try it, see what it looks like. Jump into the waters. Play around with Cameras. Take photos of yourself. Throw rocks into the waters, look at your own rippling form, and you'll understand here expansion and contraction actually lies.
If you want to see really you in water, press slow motion on the Camera, and hold it for about 5 10 seconds, and there you will see everything about who you really are. In Water, we cannot lose sight of the reality that we were born from water Inside of Mum's belly holds a hell of a lot of water for us to survive. Is there anything else you want to clarify?
MJ: Oh. You've talked about nurturing our sense of Dawaandi. When you said you know, we are literally 'beings of water', do you think it holds a broader connective power? For example, you said seeing your shadow with the Trees shadow, knowing you are connected to that Tree, and enhancing just one of your senses , your sight, how can people look to all the senses to ensure they keep expanding their sense of their Dawaandia and sense of Shadow self?
BKE: Ah, so your Shadow self has a smell and a feeling connected to you. It equates to all five senses. Now the best way to remind yourself of all of those, is to look to Southern Cross every night. It is housed with 5 constellations, like we are housed with 5 senses of Life. That is not a lie, that was there way before we come along. The Southern Cross. Look to it. You choose what star represents what sense of who you are as a human being Now, ife we are to talk about you are what you see, when Mum and Dad, they buy you that Ferrari, that is yours, because you seen it, you've touched it, you've smelled that leather inside it, it becomes you. Everything is impacted as soon as you seen that car son for you outside. That is yours. It is not a lie when you SEE the registrations is all yours and know the keys are yours. All that kind of stuff. It's the same when you see your Shadow on Country. Clearly, you Shadow cannot smell by itself, but you can, and you are the Owner of your Shadow. You know what the smell of Pizza is like You know texture and the taste and the touch of working with oil paints and penciles. Anything you choose about what life is, Dawaandi will always share itself with you.
Like me talking right now, Dawaandi is on the table with me. It's moving with me, it is of me. You just put Dawaandi on yourself, by putting your hat on So you've given yourself, Shade/Shadow, same yarn. When I look into that mirror just there, I don't need to look over there, cause I can see it there in the mirror There's no need to turn your head, just need to move yours, and you can see that over the next to gray door there's a yellow board that tells' me that there is black writing on it. And also that over there there are steps, with a divider in the middle and a whole lot of brickwork of brown and grey. All of these things are so easy to see once you expand your sight. Once expanded, that is more than enough for you to understand that it exists, it's been existing ever since you were born, and its not gonna stop existing until you stop existing. One of the benefits of it is that it helps you slow down.
BKE: It helps you to breathe a little bit easier It helps you to have the most intimate connection with Country, with yourself, at the greatest level. I can impact you with Dawaandi without the physical contact, I can touch you. All of these things are real to me, because it is seen. That old yarn that comes from Westernisms', "Seeing is Believing", it's very, very true when it comes to Dawaandi. When you things, in the waters, of your own Dawaandi, you choose between the whether telling yourself "Its True!", or "Nahhhhhh, that's not real, what's that?!" Cause you're gonna see things that are gonna freak you right out. So its up to you and your belief system and your own values of what you believe in
But the more you play in the shadows of yourself, the more real you become. The birthplace of Dawaandi is not a liar, otherwise you would not have been born. That is the greatest connection it has. When you then add four tools of existing, called Patience, Awareness, Balance and Integration; when you blend those four patterns of life to Dawaandi, you are living in the 1-5 Perceptual Position of BEV, in its ultimate form. Pabi Dawaandi combined, has the greatest impact of the birds eye view of yourself, and your environment, the reality that you are in, the people that you communicate with, the transport that you're catching, the music that you're listening to, is all balanced with interconnectedness of yourself and your surroundings.
Does that answer your question? Any other questions young man?
MJ: (Laughs), What else is there for people to know about you, in relation to the yarn about Dawaandi?
BKE: Is this, where I give a bit of a exposition about myself? (Yes) Right. Well I come to the Hive Cafe at the Newcastle Uni, because they have best coffee in town, and there's always sisters that smile when they serve you your coffee! (About yourself?) Well it is about myself , cause I've been filled with this coffee ever since I've been here. (Both Laugh).
But if you wanna search for me and some of the work that I do, jump onto instagram at @BKE79, send a DM to that identity, and I'll respond to you if you have any direct questions, or if you just wanna follow and support, its a beautiful space as well. We're at pinnacle point of evolutions timeline, where our Ancestors are calling us to change, grow, learn, and live the real definition of what inclusion is born to be lived for. Together. All of us Human Beings, together. And I'll meet you at the Beehive next time while I'm on Newcastle Campus. Love to you all. Darrandung from Guumbangri-djagung. BKE, I"M OUT! Thanks for having me on your show brother. ("Now you throw the Phone"). Now I throw the Phone?! CHHHH.

“I was born on a Dublin street where the Royal drums do beat And the loving English feet they went all over us
Come tell us how you slew them old Arabs two by two Like the Zulus they had spears, bows and arrows How bravely you faced one with your 16 pounder gun! And you frightened them natives to their marrow…”
Come Out Ye Black and Tans, Wolfe Tones.
“'Twas better to die 'neath an Irish sky than at Suvla or Sud El Bar… While Britannia's Huns, with their long range guns sailed in through the foggy dew 'Twas England bade our ‘wild geese go’, that "small nations might be free!" But their lonely graves are by Suvla's waves or the fringe of the great North Sea!
Oh the night fell black, and the rifles' crack, made perfidious Albion reel In the leaden rain, seven tongues of flame did shine o ' er the lines of steel… And the world did gaze, in deep amaze, at those fearless men, but few, Who bore the fight that freedom's light might shine through the foggy dew As back through the glen I rode again and my heart with grief was sore
For slavery fled, O glorious dead, when you fell in the foggy dew”
The Foggy Dew, Wolfe Tones.
“Slavery never existed in Australia.” Prime Minister Morrison, 2021.
Perfidious Albion is a term that has been commonly used by all different nations around the world. It refers to the uniquely and uncanny ability for British Statesmen and women, and Monarchs to lie It is usually attributed firstly to the French, in 1600s, but in actuality has been a common statement in regards to Albion Brittany, since at least 14th century Its first known deployment then, is closer to the height of the Eastern Roman Empire in the 10th century, than today in 2022 (not discounting also that the ‘Western’ Roman Empire had conquered the British Isles earlier). (Schmidt, 1943)
The reason I have employed this term is to understand the layers of lies in the imperialism that has befallen certain landmasses and groups of peoples from the deliberaite design and obfuscation at the hands of British ruling classes. This too has befallen Britain's own people, and the peoples of the wider United Kingdom – to uncover stark and new possible realities –and to understand what has befallen our continent and surrounding isles of Australia.
The first uses of this term being closer to the Eastern Roman Empires’ zenith, should give one time to reflect on what it actually means for our education today. It has been deployed by the French, by the Scottish, by the Irish (including the song at the cover page of this essay), by South American countries and African nations, and other European Nations. Whilst it hasn’t entered common parlance yet for what the United Kingdom has done and did with the Continent of Australia it fits the pattern. In fact the height of the British Empire, was only 1 century ago
Let us reflect for a moment. Indigenous populations have maintained continued Sovereignty with these lands and waters for at least 650 centuries, compared to the 40 odd centuries we are beamed with, that is our realities’ foundation in our schooling and subsequent media reflections The recent transplantation of imperial and extinction modes of accumulation via dispossesion has occurred in a second compared to hours of Governance hitherto unwavering
To break it down further, for we can understand, as Lawson said (as much as he was a racist and a sexist), that “all the dust covered customs of England remain in the middle ages, where she belongs.” These being:
‘Class distinctions and class warfare’ ‘Poverty’ ‘Landlordism’ ‘ ’Royal Regalia and Titles” “Domination by Commercial means”
“They all belong to the Middle Ages”, according to Lawson in 1887, before the Federation of Australia. Here is a Republican that understands what it means we are to get rid of, should we wish to become a truly independent republic It should be noted, that it has all unravelled for the United Kingdom in 100 years, every single lie, even the lies that they tried to cover up for the erstwhile Her Majesty the Queens’ benefit in Operation: Legacy, where thousands of documents deemed to be embarrassing to the notional decolonisation the Queen is admired for, were ordered to be burned or destroyed. (Novara Media, 2021)
But of course, the great lie, and the great lies that have befallen our Nation, stem from Classification. From definition, from the power to define what is and what isn’t: 1 2. 3 4. 5.
“In the National Interest”
It is important to note that for the last 45 years commercial oligipolists, cartels, and monopolists have had a resurgence in acquiring all that the “national interests” line contains. In the late 70s there were was a meeting point between the powers of workers organisations and commercial entities Since then, there has much gone to the wayside for the worker's organisations We may be seeing small glimpses for those workers now in 2022, but I encourage you to continue with me on this track.
In just a Century Britain has lost its Empire, notionally, and nominally, although it is has left behind its economic and social systems, its value-systems of acceptability, as well as corporate behemoths, as Kojo Koram explores in his seminal work, Uncommonwealth. (2021)
It is a great tragedy for Australia, because the Irish, Welsh and Scottish radical influence upon this nation has been vast in its imprint For we had the first ‘socialist’ Government in the world, nationalisation of all sources of wealth creations as early as 1887. 25 years before the Revolutionary Bolsheviks in Russia
It would make sense that Australia as a commercial and imperial project of the British in the South East Asia region was much about protecting and enhancing the commercial interests and profitability, above all else. In fact, this is why Queensland laid ‘claim’ to Papua and New Guinea, before our British maesters even gave us a mandate to. “An imperial motive had begun from the Continent” (Fitzpatrick, 1939, p. 45)
So with these transplantations of societies only 2 point 3 centuries ago by Perfidious Albion, and we outnumbered the First Fleet 25 1 by continental ratio of people now the role is reversed today, with 1 million Indigenous Australians, to the 25 million people immigrants or descendants. People like to say “Oh I’m 6th generation British, or 8th Generation Scottish”. That may be true. But what our individual life spans and our family circumstances sometimes fail to take account of, what we are trained and educated to think of what a generation is, (that being 15-25 years), we miss the actual scale of the project of Federated Australia. Two sixty year olds next to each other. In fact, one Dexter, had lived in every single decade of Federation, apart from the first. He passed away at 111 in 2021
Ireland, in this decade, looks set to reunify. Scotland looks set to become independent for the first time in 4 centuries. The nation state still holds importance, and its rallying clarion calls, and too as a bulwark against multi national corporate fiefdoms. These places share the same languages and landmass continuums, not in the least Ireland as an Island Community. They are not just nation states, they are now national communities. Correspondingly, Indigenous peoples have had to adopt here, European notions of nation states, in the term First Nations itself, in order to make sure that our Sovereignty is respected and recognised more deeply and further by the Palatial Implant
This has profound impacts for the State Education, and education set by the State In Australia State Public Education has been one of the biggest promoters of upward mobility, but upward mobility (Davey and Miller, 1988, p 23), at the expense of changing the system itself. An upward mobility on a Continent that has most recently been exposed to violent forms of class formation as a process. And yet too, an upward mobility in an Australia that switch from a confined producer capitalist society after the 1980s, to financialised extractivism proper, and ‘non real’ economies propping up like Derivatives markets It has occured from the 80's onwards, heightened rentierism, property marketisation, and a services economy that didn’t introduce enough services to replace the diversification the previous ‘real’ economy had in place This includes too our gig platform fiasco creating a 3 speed money wages economy and decades educating ourselves to be about the arse end of what we call supply chains Are we at war with ourselves?
Not only are the impacts of making ourselves rely upon vessels, of which 99 percent are owned by foreign entities acting as oligopolies holding the powers of cartel price fixing over us, (and not just because the Co2 emitted from such vessels that contributes to our Environmental Heating and destroys our Tourism industry) we educated ourselves, and our experts that the ‘freemarket’ was where it was all at. And we educated ourselves that services alone, not free from swings to feudalism as Liberal Hawley pointed out in 1891 in his economic treatise, Capital and Population would provide our society with a steady base
In fact, what has happened instead is a ladder effect of economies Where only certain people can access the ‘conceptual’ “economies”, that extract wealth from people and planet extortionately to the point of bio ecological collapse Only a select few can enter these markets and economies, they are cordoned off, for the vast majority of Australians by what they are paid by the hour or the project, we have created and allowed a system, unequal in its exchange, in the extreme, not just at home, but overseas too Our Australia has sat at the apex of the two largest Empires the world has ever seen, the British and the United States. We have been straddling their switch in the 20th century, and our ‘forward’ thinking labour movement leaders also recognised the “pivot to Asia”, produced “The Asian Century” report by the Labor Party in the 1990s, which saw us extend our Trade Relationship to the point of which much of our economic growth was reliant upon their populations staying in poor labour conditions from exploitative corporations on their shores Now they are pulling themselves out of poverty, we expect them to the “stay in the dirt” as Keating said? Preposterous.
So, here, this little, big, nation of 26 million, sits ready geo politically to perhaps straddle the 3 largest Empire projects of all time That it is fair to call China an imperial project, for much of its wealth generation is done by extractivist means, though its distribution may be improving in its fairness.
These all point to our own confusion Australia faces in the aftermath of the perfidy on the scale of continental invasion. It not only has over 120 First Nations subjugated within its Nation Construct, the construct has confilicting ideas about itself Is British, or is it American? Is it Australian? Is it a multi cultural society? (It is a multi cultural society because of the many different peoples of different backgrounds that live here But is woven into its identity, its power structures and parliaments, into the fabric of the nation states functions and modes of wealth generation, accumulation and distribution, ideas represented by many peoples of different experience? No.) In fact, that is the cultural revolution, the calls for the Indigenous Voice example
MALE INVESTOR: The Harmsworth Atlas and its Tellings About Genocidal Capitalism
Here I must tell a brief story In my travels to Sydney Town one day, I stumbled into Sapphos Book Store in Glebe I knew I was looking for something. Almost like a spider tingle one gets in regards to reading material awaiting you I started scanning “the highest shelves of the store until I saw the huge book, the Harmsworth Atlas
I saved up money for a few weeks, so that I could come back and take it home And, might I say, it provided me with clear conscience to some of the claims I make here more widely in the essay. That is the personal nature, it hit me like a tonne of bricks It is something I would very much to journey and yarn to you about.
This first image is of the preface where it states that “in this world of competition, the businessman must be prepared”. It essentially is the Scientific Atlas of the Time, mass produced they say, so that each Middle Class to higher investor of the British Isles may be up-to-date on Commercial Interests in Reference to the World. The preface perfectly encapsulates the political geographical story it is telling of all these places of the world
“Climate in Relation to Commercial Products” this imbibed motive is self writing. It tells plainly that only what is conceivable is to talk about the Climate in relation to an extracted good be it diamonds by slaves or sheeps wool by Australian Indigenous serfs, or Melanesian slaves in Australian sugar plantations. Super scientific and rational This third image is quite literally the first with maps and icons in the Atlas Note, the scientific rationalisation of sexually segregated work arrangements, still too “Diagrams of the Worlds’ Commerce”.
The fourth image of the Atlas hit my heart and soul something wicked when first sighted in that book store, months ago. Australia, still legally a Realm under the Crown, there effaced our Country described variously as “wastes” and “Not Yet Settled”, and so inscribed as a “Principal British Possession”. This Atlas was recently after Australia Federated as a Nation in 1911 “The Tyranny of our Powerlessness”, is not just attributed to First Nations (The Uluru Statement, 2017), but also to our fledgling Australian nation-state it seems. At least we were nominally a Commonwealth, fancy being outright a Dominion in name! Oh, but we were and are functionally, according to Evatt, with his work in “The King and His Dominion Governors”. Harps out for that towering Gough, cut down for the tall poppy he was
This second to last image, tells plainly the Anglo Saxon wish to be the world's dominator by extincting languages or attempting to, like Welsh, Gaelige, and First Nations Australians by supplanting theirs as the lingua franca of a trade systems built on immiseration, “vast commercial activity” would become available to the “Anglo Saxon” race Justifications, justifications
Well, what can be said about this last one. That Britain viewed the few remaining nations not conquered by European powers as “natives” that are merely hanging on due to intra european rivalries At least there is a hint here that having an Empire in name....
of Government and mode of Government is not preferable anymore perhaps best to change the name fellow European travellers, and add a peoples’ assembly or something minimal. A real “glimmer” of hope in a book that contains pages too “scientifically” detailing the “Chief Races of the Family of Mankind”, where the Anglo Saxon reigns supreme
Sounds inspiredly Nazi Or maybe this frenzy about Race inspired the Nazi’s? The Power of Education in action Thanks for yarning with me on the Harmsworth.
CONTENDING WITH THE POLITICAL, ECONOMIC, SOCIAL, AND CULTURAL FUNCTIONS OF EDUCATION AGAINST WIDER MOTIVATIONS: Connexions between Commerce,EducationandDisposession
For “in the context of (British) social policy, the role of the education system is perhaps the most obvious example of the creation and cultivation of ideology… a framework which presents the existing structure of society as both natural and inevitable” (Jones, C. & Novak, T. 1980)
To make perfectly clear the connexions to Education, we but only have to look over our shoulder, to the University sector. I recently attended, kind of by accident, the UTS Innovation Showcase, on Thursday 3/11/22 Although grateful for the ad hoc invite, the questions we all have to ask ourselves and others in these spaces, amidst rising hunger, destitution, homelessness, among other ills like deforestation, is what exactly have our innovations, done for the People and Country? Who is our innovation really serving? Who is our commercialisation, so often tied to innovation, serving?
What was made apparent from that night was disconnectedness, stark There you had, people talking of ‘ecosystems’, as the actual ecosystems that support these parasitic elementals are dying, chiefly by a representative of the NSW Government Precincts Ecosystems Committee. Wowee! What inspired innovation!
start-ups to commercial entities, and to ‘’relegitimise’’ First Nations knowledge, after it was almost genocided. These remarks he made in direct opposition to principles so many Indigenous Australians have expressed, like Janke in her book “True Tracks” That the kinds of commercialisation that exist are not fit at all, for the platforming of Indigenous Knowledges, especially the types these folks go for, even discounting cooperative structures (which are a better option) Then, what is the nations educational identity, functions, and aims? Shoddy Aristocracy?
It currently believes the Education “Culture Wars” in the classrooms are over and the new Federal Education Minister, Jason Clare believes it a lot But they cannot be And not when, least of all, Judeo Christian entities and corporations protecting “Western Values”, organised to spam submissions... to ACARA in March to obliterate 50 percent of the History Curriculum (Morton, 2022)
Not while, in the least, our Schools act as panopticons with teacher wardens; as holding pens Just maybe “making people before making workers”. Yeah, that is a nice thing to do. Making people before making cogs What pedagogy! Without really stopping to ask for what work purposes are we working them for?
On the panel too, were the UTS Vice Chancellor, and Ed Husic, the Federal Industry and Science Minister. And Husic made his pithy remarks about including First Nations Knowledges in the innovation spaces, and ‘translating’ university...
Add to this, the education most Australians are being beamed by the ‘’information specialists” in the media. Do you know, a man once said, decades ago in the presence of Whitlam, that the oligarch Murdoch is “a great Australian much like Attila was a Great Hun.” These people in media are educating Australians how to think, and we honestly expect an end to the “Culture Wars” in the classroom? What small L liberal tendencies have
...you fallen into or adopted, “great labour man” Jason Clare? (ABC, 1987)
So pretending that Education is separated from the ‘job market’, from the national identity, from the community’s identity, and is separated from the economy and legal structure - is baloney. Because these elite types at these Showcases are arguing for specific educational functions and specific economic functions totheirdirection.
I remember one man on the panel raised the work of AMWU on the Transition Authorities. Mr Husic said in his keynote that he invited “community involvement”. So when I asked him in private, “what was his idea for “national coordinates” for these innovations in democratising local transitions from Hunter to La Trobe?”, his response was “I don’t like it, I don’t like setting up bearuacracies”. A charitable interpretation (Jeffrey, 2022) of his response would be that he just was not taking the time to appreciate that whilst maybe under a statute of State Government, these bodies maybe are not just bureaucracies, but more democratic local structures that ensure that the people in these places making the biggest transition in Energy Generation our Nation has seen are community made, shared and led. But I really wonder, for Husic, that man that “loves community consultation”, was frozen, until I mentioned, “well what about their devolved nature?”, where he reverted to saying “Oh yeah, I appreciate community participation”. (Jeffrey, 2022)
I am not in the game of pinning people for the sake of it it serves no one I was more saying to the Minister, that if there is the possibility that these Authorities will exist, and you cannot stop them, is it not worth your while to create a national coordinate to make sure the Transition Authorities across the Country are working in concert to larger goals?
This lack of vision is something that seemingly is slipping the minds of Minister Clare and Minister Husic, who have, “upon seeing the stately car”, “undergone some mental transformation” in the Labor Ranks. (Childe, 1922, p17) They take a Keating Mantra seriously, from his “radical centrist” position, that we must “find a conciliation point between Labour and Capital”, not realising that the emancipation of labour and knowledge, is not going to lay with these showcases and groups who are only listening to self anointed “captains of industry”, and “captains of the knowledge economy”. For not one on that panel was of Indigenous descent, or a potential resident of a community affected, or an educators perspective All in all of the audience, perhaps only one avow’d socialist, not myself Not entirely representative of the Australian community the showcase felt like a macabre exaggeration of disconnectedness
What must be found out, is if there is an actual way to have co sponsored Sovereignty of Country, to allow people to think about what the Educational System actually is for, and to give them the opportunity to say it? I am not scared, like those who are willy nilly dipping their hearts into the poisoned liberal tendencies of the Labor Party these days - that the people will demand us not teach anything Indigenous or anything deemed ‘woke’ in our Schools.
I have a belief that the majority of Australians, on basic principles, if they had their opportunity, to have their actual input heard on what the Educational System is for, over the next 10 20 years, we could setup a system layer that works for hundreds, if not thousands of years.
IF you get people thinking about long term functions of society and education, the continuing sovereignty, and the lock-out that happened with the Framers Coup of a dead Constitution on arrival in the 1890s which saw not one representing the Labour movement, not one representing the First Nations, and not a single woman a party.
IF you get the people the thinking about the 13th and and 14th decade of Australia before us, it is the time to start the actual evidences of practical reconciliation.
"Abrisked by the ocean, I contemplate the destruction of Perfidious Albion... and this misguided notion that the colonial Australia is no longer here..."
We are told we cannot have the Voice because it does not advance practical reconciliation. Practical reconciliation, originally a term popularised by the perfidious Howard. It won’t be advanced unless we acknowledge the system of relations here is hurting us and making us sick, and that our Constitution and our Educational System are sick
For what trite aims our Education System has in making sure Highschool Kids achieve well in standardised testing, we have been falling behind dozens of nations in maths, science and English for the last 15 years. What could this say about us, except that we have been sleepwalking, as human communities on this Continent? It is not simply a matter of Indigenous qua Non Indigenous. There are many streams within one, within many, that flow into the river system and flow out of it.
Abrisked by the ocean, I contemplate the destruction of Perfidious Albion, where a recent Prime Minister tried to tell us “slavery wasn’t real”, and this misguided notion that the colonial Australia is no longer here We have all its hallmark champions. Including the systems of convict prisons for for profit private companies...
...embedded with private prisons, working almost exactly as the British set up, for as little as 3 dollars a day, and we are educated to see it as not ongoing. We are educated our landscapes as nothing, but property to exploit. We are educated in our schools, more and more about Indigenous Customs, and yet not alerting people to the dispossesive motivations embedded in their social economic and cultural frameworks to disposses communities, as they work as hard as they can to keep afloat and living
The problem cannot be supply The problem must be distribution and generation. Especially in the highly concentrated producer and consumer markets that national capitalist economies have overlaid on the Continent of Australia Our education does not explore the economies within our locales, within Australia, our region and the World, that are not accorded to the imperial capitalistic principles and value sets. The economies that embody other value sets, still, even not in the capitalist realms we are not educated the more redistributive avenues, unless we go deeply looking through literature
When we talk about Makarrata, the coming together, where Treaties have not been yet signed, we must avoid a Framers Coup here at all costs Practical reconciliation for all humans on the Continent with their land will be setback for hundreds of years if we allow Framers Coups to occur. So the opportunities there for Voice, Treaty, Truth, and Republic across the next two decades,
Therein, a First Nations priority must ensure that our Educational Systems prepare our next generations, all of our children, to live in harmony, sustained and regeneratively, with their communities diaspora differences, and their land, for all the generations to come.
Let me make this clearer, the essential problem is that we haven’t yet the belief we can do it! That we obfuscate it to the next day, and to the next week, and to the next year That we pour the responsibility all onto the Teachers and Kids themselves. With Perfidious Albion on their last legs, that any and all Indigenous Priorities and NonIndigenous priorities reflect all the micro and macro cultures in Australia.
It is all well and good to have the panopticons and the wardens, but when the “brighter day comes”, and “waters become one” again, will we say that the “Teacher did not teach us nonsense”? (Yothu Yindi, 1991, & Fela Kuti, 1980)
Will we say that we finally sat in a circle, and gave our national community the space to fashion and envision, educational structures that will found a system of generational-knowledge transfer worthy of ten millenia or more?
It is time for a Constitutional Covention Series on the Educational System, its functions, its aims, that hears out the Australian People.
It's time to walk out of the 'shades of history', and to lean into the present moment.
