A systematic synthetic phonics program for F–2
ELSA is based on a highly researched, evidence-based program with proven impact. OUP has adapted this series to support the needs of Australian schools and teachers, with complete alignment to all state curriculums. The ELSA phonic progression is aligned to Letters and Sounds.
Whole-class, explicit teaching
Each ELSA lesson provides clear and explicit instruction to enable gradual release where students can practice, apply and then master GPC knowledge and reading.
The online, on-demand training included in the Teaching Subscriptions ensures that teachers are well-prepared and confident in implementing ELSA in their classrooms
Consistent structure, resources and terminology
ELSA uses consistent classroom resources and lesson plans for repetition and reinforcement of learning to ensure both teachers and students know exactly what to expect. Every ELSA lesson is planned, prepared and ready for your class.
The program includes:

35-45 minute daily lessons

Teacher training videos cover the theory and pedagogy behind the program and demonstrate all teaching strategies and lesson types.

Assessment and Interventions
Assessment of students’ grapheme knowledge, blending and word reading is key to ensuring that all students make rapid progress through the program

ELSA supplies all materials for frequent assessment and interventions to quickly target and close any gaps in sound knowledge or reading skills.

Independent and paired reading resources
The ELSA eLibrary school subscription and the ELSA Phonic Readers series make reading practice easy, with titles matched to each week of the ELSA progression across Foundation and Year 1.
