FIRST YEAR COURSES The first year courses are designed to introduce the business/economics field-related English to students of Economics, Accounting and Finance, Marketing and Management and Entrepreneurship. Students who come to the university with a general language competence of B1 to B2 should begin their English studies with the first year courses. Students who evaluate their own skills as being clearly advanced, well into the B2 level can consider beginning their English studies with the second year courses. Schedule: First year courses are scheduled to be completed in the fall and spring of the first year. If you plan to complete your foreign language degree requirement (16 op) in English, you should divide the required 16 study points/ops over three years. Take 4 op in the first year, six in the second year and six in the third year. Select courses which you are interested in from the following alternatives. You will find the course descriptions below. Evaluation: All courses are graded according to the university grading scale of 1–5. 902123Y WRITING STRUCTURES AND GRAMMAR 2 op Taitotasot (EVK) B1-B2 Ajoitus: fall or spring 1st year Tavoitteet: By the end of the course the student has practiced the following: can produce clear detailed text on a range of subjects Sisältö: The student will take a diagnostic exam which can reveal the grammar gaps in the students’ own grammatical abilities in English. The structures of the English language will be reviewed and the student can get feedback on own writing skills. By

working on writing as a process the student can make progress in writing accuracy. In this course students will examine and begin compiling a personal European Language Portfolio. This Portfolio consists of a Language Passport, Language Biography, and the Dossier. The student has also understood in detail texts within the field of his academic interests. Sisältö: The student will focus on texts and vocabulary from the fields of Finance, Economics, Accounting, and Sales.
