PRESIDENT’S ADDRESS

Welcome to Oxford! It’s a great city and university to be LGBTQ+ in, particularly because it is so wonderfully queer and quirky. The Soc - as we call the societystrives to make the queer community lively and lovely, and does a pretty good job at it!

At a time in which any type of queerness is increasingly politicised and persecuted, there is immense value in having a sheltered, supportive community. A community that knows how to stand up for itself and in solidarity with all its members. And a community that also knows how to make sure to take care and empower its members and celebrate their joy. This kind of queer family is what the Soc has been building for the past 50 years! And I am proud to say that such a resilient, welcoming community exists in Oxford. This is why we are the largest student society in Oxford and largest LGBTQ+ student society in the country.

I am really looking forward to meeting all of you in tuesgays, the many other events we run, and the city’s queer establishments - do say hello! And always feel free to reach out - I am here for you!

Addi

WHO ARE WE?

[1] SOCIAL [2] WELFARE

The OULGBTQ+ Society organises 100+ events a term ranging from Tuesgays, a cheap alcoholic weekly social welcome to all, to small sober welfare-events like Women*’s watercolour and RaEM potlucks. Whether you ’ re into rock-climbing, arts and crafts, or just want free pizza - Soc will always have at least one event that’s perfect for you. On top of the identity-based events, we have regular weekly events open to all, and special events like Trans Pride, Soirée's and Drag Cuppers.

The Society has welfare secretaries who organise a weekly movie night and many other welfare events a term (welfare picnics, free Junkyard Golf trip, hot chochlate socials, etc). Furthermore, the Soc has more than a dozen identity reps that host identity-specific welfare events, representing a range identites, such as: Women*’s, Ace, NB/GNC, Trans, Neurodiversity and Disability, Faith, Grads, Bi/Pan. If you have any issues - or just want someone to talk to - you can always email a rep.

[3] AND SO MUCH MORE

The Soc offers many schemes, such as the rainbow parenting program (make sure to sign up!), the gender expressions funds, our online identity group chats and minecraft server, our stash sales, and so much more. Anything queer in Oxford - from social life, wellbeing, and queer advocacy - was afffected by the Soc in one way or the other.

Queer Movie Night is a the weekly sober movie social on Sundays hosted by the Welfare Secretaries. Each week we show a different movie: Tar, Shrek, etc. Occasionally we have special viewings for Eurovision and Drag Race! Come along for free snacks and good vibes.

UPCOMING EVENTS!

Date TBC

Watched PRIDE and thought “I wish I could go to that club night!”? We did! So we are organising a very special event that is geared to be the highlight of this term - a Pits and Perverts style Plush club night. We will take over the club in an eighties-themed extraqueer student-run night, and in the same spirit of solidarity that motivated Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners in 1987, we will donate all proceeds from the night to the AKTan important queer charity that helps young LGBTQ+ homeless people. Tune in for further updates!

HIGHLIGHTED EVENTS

QUEERFEST is back! On Saturday

18th November, Wadham College Gardens will be taken over by the infamous Queerfest from 6pm to Midnight With a variety of DJs, Tribute Acts and more there will be something for everyone This year's theme is LIBERATION to highlight the recent struggles which have faced the LGBTQ+ Community and to celebrate our continuing liberation We are also celebrating 50 Years of OULGBTQ+ Society!

While the OULGBTQ+ Society runs campaigns when we think the welfare of Oxford’s queer community is at stakes, and engages in high-level advocacy with the university, the Oxford SU LGBTQ+ Campaign has a broader political mandate It is a separate organisation, an arm of the Student Union, and it runs working groups on issues like sexual health and queer-accepting churches, organises talks, builds a network of common room LGBT reps, and mostly engages in advocacy on broader national queer issues
