Sulphur, Oklahoma Project Details: Students in the 2016 Spring Semester Environmental Design Capstone Course had a unique opportunity to work on a project tied to the Centennial of the U.S. National Park Service, a part of the U.S. Department of the Interior. On August 25, 2016, the National Park Service turns 100 years old. Also, during 2016, the passage of the National Historic Preservation Act turns 50 years old on October 15, 1966.

The park has 9,888.83 acres with 2,409 acres covered by water.
Students gathered information about the park, the park system, and the Chickasaw Nation, learned about historic “parkitecture” and current standards for new park buildings.
As a way to understand the significance of these two milestones, students worked on a project in one of Oklahoma’s three National Park properties, the Chickasaw National Recreation Area, once called Platt National Park, in Sulphur, Oklahoma. Students worked with staff of the park to improve and increase amenities for visitors to this beautiful park. In addition to learning about this Oklahoma park and the national park system, the class also learned more about The Chickasaw Nation that has a huge presence in this area. Students gathered information about the park, the park system, and the Chickasaw Nation, learned about historic “parkitecture” and current standards for new park buildings. For this project, the staff of the Sulphur park asked us to look at four various sites for potential conceptual designs. They are the following sites: 1. 2. 3. 4.
Panther Falls Comfort Station Cold Springs Campground Shower Building Lower Rock Creek Campground Shower Building Upper Rock Creek Shower Building, Pavilion and use as a Group Area.
From a site visit conducted, it seemed that the Cold Springs Campground Shower Building site and the Panther Falls facilities would be the key projects for improving and increasing amenities for the most visitors to the park.

This project coincides with the 100th
Anniversary of the founding of the National Park Service. Oklahoma has just three National Park Service properties. The Chickasaw National Recreation is the first property to be designated as such. The request from Ken Ruhnke was to analyze the existing facilities in different campgrounds and determine what future facilities could be. The class split into two groups.
The first group worked on improving restroom facilities in the Panther Falls Comfort Station and rehabilitating a historic facility into shower and restroom facilities in the Cold Springs Campground.
The second group designed a brand new ADA compatible shower and restroom facilities in a more central location in the Cold Springs Campground (Cold Springs Campground Shower Building).

First recommendation is to renovate an existing structure that already has a lot of historical integrity at the campground. It is by the entrance of the campsite and requires minor changes to bring it up to date. The design team proposed to add shower and toilet facilities and added ADA accessible ramp to fit the current need.

Team members were also responsible for the revamping of the current rest area located at the Panther Falls swim area by replacing the current prefabricated water closets with a more permanent, nicer looking, rest station that will also provide shower opportunities. However, the showers offered here would be more like beach showers to rinse off instead of the enclosed showers offered at Cold Springs Campground.

The second team designed a new comfort station with showers, located in the center of the Cold Springs Campground at the middle turn around. They are considering this site because of its central location and they believe having the turn around near the site will make convenient access. The location of the building serves best for the surrounding camp sites.

The team wanted the new facility to reflect the historical integrity of the existing buildings in the park but not necessarily mimic them. The main material was stone, but they also added cedar wood trim as well as a more contemporary roof material. The resulting structure is a blend of traditional elements and fresh ideas.
