The Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund is the largest independent scholarship fund in New England and works to enhance the legacy of Francis Ouimet by growing the fund he loved so dearly. The Ouimet Fund’s purpose is to help deserving young men and women, who have worked at golf courses in Massachusetts, obtain a college education.
In 1913, 20-year-old Francis Ouimet, a relatively unknown amateur and former caddie, achieved an extraordinary feat by defeating Harry Vardon and Ted Ray at the U.S. Open at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts. Growing up in a modest home across the street from the 17th hole at TCC, Ouimet was self-taught, honing his skills in his backyard.
Another great moment unfolded just before the U.S. Open playoff when Francis declined the offer of an experienced TCC member to caddie for him, opting instead to continue on with 10-year-old Eddie Lowery. The iconic photograph capturing Ouimet and Lowery walking down the fairway has etched itself into golf history, symbolizing Ouimet’s remarkable victory and his compassion towards young people.
