OUACHITA RESOURCES 2025

welcome

You’re joining a university that’s academically excellent, unapologetically Christian and highly relational. It’s a place where gifted and committed faculty will invest in you, and you’ll connect with other students who share your values. That’s why one parent described Ouachita as a “premium value.” Students, you’re now part of a special Christian higher education community, a place where you’ll know others and where you’ll be valued and known.

The purpose of Early Registration (ER) is to help you to be informed and prepared as you start college at Ouachita. We look forward to your questions – and those of your parents, as well.

Lisa and I are excited to welcome you to campus in August for the 2025-26 academic year and the beginning of your Ouachita journey.

THE FIRST SEMESTER AT OUACHITA

During Early Registration, you and your faculty advisor will develop your schedule. This information will help you get started.1

Undergraduate students take courses in four main categories: Ouachita CORE, major, minor and general electives. Here’s a quick overview:

Ouachita CORE

47–48

Major (credit hours vary by program) at least 24

Minor (credit hours vary by program, and some majors do not require a minor) at least 18

Electives Varies

First-semester students normally register for 14-18 credit hours (five to seven courses). Many of your first courses will come from the Ouachita CORE – a family of courses at the heart of our Christian liberal arts tradition, designed to provide a broad-based education. We hope that as you progress through the CORE throughout your time at Ouachita, you’ll become a more well-rounded learner inspired to love God and others as you pursue a life of meaningful work in whatever vocation to which God has called you.

COMMON CORE (27 CREDIT HOURS)

Within the Ouachita CORE, you’ll complete nine courses that make up the Common CORE. Students normally take the following four Common CORE courses during their first semester:

OBU Connections (CORE 1002)

Discover Ouachita’s Christian liberal arts tradition and experience enthusiastic instructors from across the university who will introduce a topic they choose for the course.

Survey of the Bible (CORE 1113)

Trace the grand story of God’s redeeming love, which is revealed in creation, covenant, the cross of Jesus, the gift of the Spirit and the promise of new creation.

The Contemporary World (CORE 1023)

Study major issues in our world, and develop the understanding to address them.

Composition I (CORE 1043)

Improve your ability to engage in written academic discourse, appropriating sources with accuracy, elegance and integrity.

1 For additional information, see our Student Advising Guidelines FAQ webpage obu.edu/advising-faq

FLEXIBLE CORE (20–21 CREDIT HOURS)

Within the Ouachita CORE, you’ll also complete courses from six Flexible CORE categories. Students often take courses from the following four categories at some point during their first year:

PHYSICAL WELL-BEING (2 OR 3 CREDIT HOURS)

Choose one of three courses: Concepts of Wellness (KIN 1002), Health & Safety (KIN 2073) or Outdoor Leisure Pursuits (KIN 2013).

APPLIED SKILLS (3 CREDIT HOURS)

Choose one of two courses: Fundamentals of Public Speaking (COMM 1003) or Personal Finance (FINN 2003).

ANALYTICAL AND QUANTITATIVE REASONING (3 CREDIT HOURS)

Faculty advisors will guide you in choosing an appropriate math or philosophy course, according to your test score (ACT/SAT/MPI) and any requirements for your intended major.

INTERCULTURAL APPRECIATION AND COMMUNICATION (6 CREDIT HOURS)

Learn another language, choosing from Spanish, Biblical Greek, Biblical Hebrew, German, Japanese or American Sign Language. Ouachita encourages you to take these courses early in your education.

OTHER CORE OPTIONS

If you have completed or will receive credit for some of the required courses listed above, you may want to consider taking one or both of these sophomore-level common CORE courses:

World Literature (CORE 2233)

Read and write about diverse texts from multiple literary traditions with particular attention to their genres and historical-cultural contexts.

History of World Societies (CORE 2243)

Survey the development of and interaction between world societies.

COURSES OUTSIDE THE CORE

In addition to scheduling CORE courses, your advisor will help you choose courses within your major.2 If you haven’t yet decided on a major, you may choose courses in other areas of interest, including subjects you might be considering for a major or minor. As you consider options for your class schedule, your advisor will help you determine an appropriate course load for you.

2 If you’ve already earned college credit before fall, communicate this to your advisor, who can help you determine how this credit will affect your schedule. For more information, see obu.edu/ap-clep-credit For more information on transfer credit, see obu.edu/transferring-academic-credit or contact the Office of the Registrar, registrar@obu.edu or 870.245.5580.

HAVE YOU ALREADY EARNED COLLEGE CREDIT?

If you have earned college credit or plan to do so, be sure to tell your academic advisor

TRANSFER CREDIT

You may also call the Registrar’s Office at 870.245.5580 or email Lizann Tollett, tollettl@obu.edu. The Registrar’s Office will work with each student individually to determine the exact number of transfer credits and the requirements that can be satisfied with these courses.

DUAL-CREDIT PROGRAMS (OR CONCURRENT CREDIT)

If you’ve taken a course at your high school that also counts for college credit, Ouachita will accept the credits as long as they’re reported on an official college or university transcript. After completing the course and receiving a grade, request an official transcript be sent to the Registrar’s Office at Ouachita, from the college or university where you earned credit.

CREDIT BY EXAMINATION: AP / CLEP / IB

Students may count up to 30 hours of credit by examination toward their graduation requirements at Ouachita. QUESTION: WHAT DO ROUTE 66, BIBLICAL LEADERSHIP

OBU CONNECTIONS

USING THE OUACHITA WEB PORTAL

The Ouachita web portal (sometimes called the Info Portal) will be used for many things throughout your time as a Ouachita student, so it’s important to become familiar with this important tool.

Some things you are able to do in the web portal include:

• See your class schedule and order textbooks.

• View your pre-bill and financial aid offer.

• See your bill and pay with credit card, debit card or e-check.

• Accept or decline federal student loans.

• Complete work-study paperwork.

• View your mid-term and semester grades.

• View and submit housing information.

• Request forms, including: Verification of Enrollment, tax forms, transcripts and more.

• Complete Online Check-in. This is very important! August 11-13, you will complete the check-in process through the web portal to confirm your enrollment for the upcoming semester. Your class schedule will be dropped if you do not complete this process. Your admissions counselor will communicate additional details to you.

1. GO TO INFO.OBU.EDU , AND LOG IN WITH YOUR USERNAME & PASSWORD.

• Your username is the first three letters of your last name plus your 5-digit student ID number.

• Forgot your username or password? Click on “Forgot Password.”

2. CREATE YOUR CAMPUS EMAIL ACCOUNT.

• In the Menu, under the “My Accounts” section, click on “Create/Change Tigermail/Moodle Acct.”

• Follow the instructions on the screen. Your student email username is the same as your web portal username.

3. MAKE YOUR OUACHITA EMAIL ACCOUNT PART OF YOUR ROUTINE.

• All official correspondence from the university will go to your Ouachita email account. Add it to the accounts on your phone, and check it daily.

PARENTS CAN USE THE OUACHITA WEB PORTAL, TOO – IF YOU GRANT THEM ACCESS. HERE’S HOW.

According to the federal Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), the university must have authorization from students 18 or older to discuss their educational records with others, including parents. For many students, the best way to do this is to set up a parent portal by following the instructions below. Another option is to sign a waiver form available in the Office of Student Financial Services or Office of the Registrar. The waiver also is available online at obu.edu/registrar

1. LOG IN TO THE WEB PORTAL WITH YOUR STUDENT ACCOUNT, AND GO TO “PARENT PORTAL SETTINGS” IN THE “MY ACCOUNTS” SECTION.

2. CHOOSE “ADD RECORD.”

3. COMPLETE THE WAIVER & CREATE YOUR PARENT’S ACCOUNT.

• Your parents will now be able to pay your bill, see your statement history, see your class schedule (as well as semester and midterm grades) and view your unofficial transcripts.

4. PARENT ACCOUNTS LOG IN USING “PARENT PORTAL” LINK ON THE INFO.OBU.EDU LOG IN PAGE.

NEXT STEPS FOR YOUR STUDENT FINANCIAL AID

Call, email or stop by the Office of Student Financial Services for any questions regarding your charges, payments or student financial aid.

1. SUBMIT AND ACCEPT STATE SCHOLARSHIPS PER THEIR INSTRUCTIONS.

For example, Arkansas residents who are receiving the Arkansas Academic Challenge Scholarship must submit an application to the Arkansas Division of Higher Education at sams.adhe.edu by July 1. Once this step is completed, continue to monitor your ADHE portal and emails from ADHE, submit your final high school transcript, make sure Ouachita is listed as your school of choice, and accept your scholarship in the ADHE portal after it is awarded.

2. ONCE YOUR FINANCIAL AID PACKAGE IS AVAILABLE, PLEASE REVIEW IT.

Your pre-bill will populate in your Ouachita web portal* (click “Pre-Bill Display” in the “Financial” section of the menu) after pre-registration. Review your anticipated charges and financial aid and contact us now if you have questions.  After Online Check-in is complete in August, you can view your account statement and balance under “Account Balance.”

3. PURSUE A WORK STUDY POSITION, IF ELIGIBLE.

The Federal Work Study program is a need-based program. Work Study was included in your Financial Aid Offer if you qualify to participate based on your FAFSA. Available jobs for the coming year are listed at obu.edu/workstudy; email the listed contact to request your desired role. Positions are not automatically assigned.

4. ACCEPT OR DECLINE LOANS.

If you filed a FAFSA, we listed your student loan eligibility on your Financial Aid Offer. You have the option to accept all of your loans, accept a reduced loan amount, or decline all of your loans. Complete this in your Ouachita web portal under “Accept or Decline Loans” in the “Financial” section. If you accept any student loans, the student (not the parent) must complete a Master Promissory Note and a Student Loan Entrance Counseling Session at studentaid.gov. Parents, we recommend that you have financial conversations with your students about loan debt. It is unlawful to accept your student’s loans without their knowledge or consent.

5. APPLY FOR PRIVATE SCHOLARSHIPS.

Apply for private scholarships now and throughout your college career. Let the Office of Student Financial Services know as soon as possible about any private scholarships you will receive.

6. CONSIDER ADDITIONAL LOANS.

If you need assistance with the remainder of your balance, Ouachita’s financial aid counselors are available to discuss your options, including the federal Parent PLUS loan (apply at studentaid.gov after June 1) or a private alternative loan (see obu.edu/finaid/private for more information).

Through events, awareness initiatives and student organizations like Multicultural Organization Reaching Equality and La Fuerza, MSP seeks to improve awareness of diversity through personal relationships and programs involving the students, faculty, staff and community.

If you are interested in joining the MSP Gospel Choir, contact Dr. Natilan Crutcher, visiting assistant professor of music, at crutchern@obu.edu or 870.245.5144.
