Education Review The Education Review Office (ERO) is the New Zealand government department that reviews and reports on the performance of early learning services, kura and schools. Ōtūmoetai College last went through an ERO review in 2016, and it is time for us to enter into a new cycle of review in 2021. This years’ review will have a different shape and feel to it. ERO’s new review format will be a more collaborative and tailored approach in order for ERO to better understand our school’s individual context, culture, strengths and needs. This review will follow a more flexible approach to ensure the model is practical and can be refined and improved over time.

Neil Harray will be Otumoetai College’s ERO reviewer, or evaluation partner using the new parlance, and he will bring an evidence-informed approach that focuses on the things that we know from research and practice make the biggest difference to schools. ERO is committed to supporting improved outcomes and achieving equity for all learners, particularly Māori and priority learners. The principles that underpin the new model give priority to the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi through a focus on partnerships to achieve desired outcomes. Their new model has a focus on understanding the cultural context of each school in order to
best serve its needs. By building differentiation into the model, ERO provide themselves with the flexibility to work with the wider community where it is desired and appropriate.
