The Upton Challon UPTON EVANGELICAL UNITED BRETHREN CHURCH
Pastor’s Column March has been one of the very busy but also very fruitful months in this year’s work of the Upton Church. There were up to and including Easter 35 baptisms, 67% who joined the church and an offering of over $4500 for Easter with more than $3700 in the special Easter offering. At the candlelight Holy Communion on Tues day evening of Holy Week and at the two worship services on Easter people were turned away because there was not enough room for them. These things indicate a busy time for your pastor and for many others. As for your pastor it has been an exceedingly busy time. In this busy time I would not be fair if I did not speak a word of appreci ation for so many who did so much to help in the on going of the work. The musicians, the secretary, the officials and heads of departments, the teachers, special com mittees, etc., etc. It is my candid opinion that there is also indicated the need for additional room and facilities in the Easter season through which we have just passed. But I would not base the need for the completion of the building upon this alone. How much more we could do in so many ways if we had the facilities. Our boys and girls must do with a very limited program in comparison with what we would like or could do if we had the facilities. I do not mean that we are not doing a good job now but I do mean that it could be so much better if our splen did workers were given the chance. Our youth and adults are actually being de prived of benefits that can mean so much to their lives and to the Kingdom in gen eral. It is my opinion that an overwhelming number of our people want us to proceed with the building. It is my opinion further that they are right in their desire. To the end that we may proceed intelligently there is now being set up by the Council of ad ministration a Building Committee to gather facts, make plans and formulate recommendations that the congregation may have them in order that in the near future the congregation may decide wheter or not to proceed with building. Pray much and if you are called upon to serve in this matter do so with all your con secration. You will be much needed. May will be filled with many good things. Mother and Daughter banquet will be held Wed. evening. May 6th. Mother’s Day will be observed May 10. Recognition for those graduating from high school and college will be May 17 and the Memorial day ser vices will be held May 31. You will want to be present for them all. June 7th will be (Continued on Page 2)

w. s. w. s. The Women’s Society of World Service met in the Church Social Rooms on Fri day April 10th, 1953 with twenty-two ladies present. The usual business meeting was held wuth our President naming her committees for the Mother’s and Daugh ter’s banquet to be held in the church Social Rooms on May 6th, at 6 P. M. Please see Mrs. Kuehnl or Mrs. Virgie Ziegler for tickets. These ladies will be in the church vestibule imediately after the Sunday Morning Worship service at which time you may purchase your tickets. The price of the tickets is $1.00 for adults and 75c for children. All reservations must be in by May 3rd. The devotions were led by Mrs. Mary Rathke, who gave us a report on the Miss ionary fields and the leprosy work being done at the various mision stations. After the devotional period the ladies had brought old clean tom shirts and bed linens that we fixed to be sent to these various leprosy colonies. The linens were tom up in various widths and rolled up for use as bandages. The shirts were fixed without collars and the sleeves made short for the patients to wear. Everyone present en joyed the fellowship of each other and felt she had accomplished something. The true meaning of missionary women was experi enced with this work. A social hour followed with home-made cookies and tea and coffee served by the committee. We wish to thank the ladies for their delightful refreshments. Upton Choir The choir extends its deepest sympathy to Mr. French in the death of his mother and to Mrs. Rhoades in the death of her baby grandchild. During the month of March a short bus iness meeting was held after rehearsal to tell our new members about our monthly dues and to get them acquainted with our rules and bylaws. Special note to all choir members and to anyone who was ever in the choir. Will you please look in your home for any music that you might have borrowed. Our music supply is dwindling very fast. If you have a black music folder will you please return that also. Frances Dotson Reporter
