HENRY W. OLSON

Doctor of Arts

Parallel careers in art and science mark Henry W . Olson as a distinctive individual. Born in Canton , Ohio, his artist i c temperament surfaced early and by the time he came to Otterbe i n College , he appeared likely to find a career in art. However, a keen in t erest in science developed and he graduated in 1924 with a Bachelor of Science degree, having received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Otterbein the previous year.

Continued work at The Ohio State University resulted in a Masters degree in bacteriology and anatomy and a Doctor s de g ree in the same discipline in 1928. After overseas study at Heidelberg University, he entered the teaching field as instructor of biolo g y at Findlay College and went on to teach as professor at Sou t heast Missouri State Teachers College He was professor of biology and dean of men at Pennsylvania State Teachers College , cappin g his career as a teacher by heading the Science Department a s professor of anatomy at the District of Columbia Teachers College for almost 30 years. After retiring in 1966 , he became professor of anatomy at George Washington University.

Concurrently with his career , he was judge and jury member for many art shows in the environs of Washington and Baltimore and had at least 50 one-person shows, primarily in water colors . Although proficient in the use of oils, seascapes and landscapes in water colors are his preferred artistic choice. He was president of the Art Club of Washington, and is currently a member of the Society of Washington Artists , the Art Club of Washington, the Washington Landscape Club, and the Washington Water Color Association .

Listed in the American Men of Science and in many editions of Who ' s Who in Art , he has published several monographs and papers in the field of science and has received numerous prizes and news reproductions of his paintings

Elected a fellow to the American Association for the Advancement of Science, he is also a member of Sigma Xi, Kappa Delta Pi , and was national president of Sigma Zeta and Phi Sigma Pi.

For many years he taught painting at his studio in Rockport , Massachusetts but now has his studio in Washington , D.C.

Pursuing two professions with skill , talent , and diligence, Henry W. Olson has distinguished himself in both fields of art and science His extensive involvement with the community of Washington , D.C. as well as his recognition on national levels by his peers is also noted. Otterbein College recognizes this unique blend of achievements in these two fields by alumnus Henry W . Olson and bestows upon him the degree of Doctor of Arts.

BROCK PETERS DOCTOR OF FINE ARTS

Actor, singer , writer , producer, artist proficient in all media , whether on stage , film, clubs , recordings or concerts, Brock Peters is in the clas sic tradition of the great performing artist, a man of intelligence , of many talents and interests , a true American artist.

Although his performance in theatre and film have brought numerous accolades and awards , including a Tony nomination for Lo st in the Stars and a Golden Globe award for best supporting actor in To Kill a Mockingbird , like most developing artists during his earl y career he worked at diverse jobs including hospital orderly and garment worker .

Born in Harlem of a French African father and West Indian mother, Peters graduated from Music and Art High School. He studied violin and voice , and on Sundays earned money singing in church choirs and concerts. At New York City College his physical prowess made him a top college athlete and he studied physical education and psychology . Fortunately , he couldn ' t resist performing. Eight bars of " Old Man River " at an auditorium for a revival of Por g y and Bes s convinced the producer to give him the role of Jim, and he left college to tour the U.S. There followed numerous featured roles on and off Broadway, in road shows and stock companies , nightclubs , television and a long run in Chicago as the juvenile lead in Anna Luca sta During the run he finished his education at the University of Chicago

The most educative job, however, was a three season tour of the U.S. as bass soloist with the famed DePaur Infantry Chorus. Then followed the role of Sergeant Brown in the film, Carmen /ones. Samuel Goldwyn liked what he saw and cast him as the evil " Crown " in the film Porgy and Bess. Film success soon followed with such memorable films as To Kill a Mockingbird , The L-Shaped Ro om , Heaven 's Above and The Pawnbroker .

In addition to film, Peters has sung on numerous network variety shows , recorded albums, appeared in clubs and guest starred on almost every major dramatic TV series. In theatre he has , naturally, played " Othello " numerous times , always with great acclaim as the " consumate Othello ," including a guest star appearance with the Otterbein College Theatre in 1971. Other stage triumphs include starring in the national tour of The Great White Hope and the 1973 production of the Kurt Weill-Maxwell Anderson musical drama Lost in the Stars.

In 1974 Peters co-produced Five on the Black Hand Side for United Artists , a comedy about a middle class Black family that started a new trend, stressing the poignant humor of the Black American experience. He also produced and starred in This Far By

Faith, a historical dramatization of the Black church as a respository of Black culture and its effect on the larger American society.

Numerous activities of national importance include: Board Chairman of Founder of the Free Southern Theatre; co-founder with Cecily Tyson of the now famous Dance Theatre of Harlem; producer and Honorary Chairman of the Los Angeles " Tribute to Pioneers in Black Political Leadership "; one of the founders of the Third World Cinema, training program for minority film students; and Chairman of the California Arts Commission

Otterbein College recognizes his remarkable record and achievement as an outstanding artist, actor, singer, writer, producer , and his many contributions to the cultural enrichment of America , and takes great pride in awarding the degree of Doctor of Fine Arts to Brock Peters.

ROY H. BOWEN DOCTOR OF FINE ARTS

Dr. Roy H. Bowen has for many years been recognized as one of the outstanding theatre directors in Ohio. In his more than 30years of theatrical work in Columbus , he has directed over 125 major productions , mostly at the Ohio State University and the Columbus Players Club Theatre. He retired from the faculty of Ohio State with the rank of Emeritus Professor in 1977.

A native of Canal Winchester, he graduated from Otterbein College in 1933 , received his master's degree from Northwestern University in 1940, and was awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy from Ohio State in 1951 After teaching high school at Circleville and West High in Columbus, he served in the Army with the Adjutant General's office and was discharged in 1946 with the rank of Captain. From 1946 until 1949 , he was both a graduate assistant and assistant instructor at Ohio State.

Dr. Bowen was appointed as Managing Director of the Columbus Players Club in 1948 and served in that capacity for 10 years, directing some 50 productions. At the same time, he served during summers as Visiting Assistant Professor at Ohio State, was cofounder of the original Stadium Theatre in 1950, and directed many of its most memorable productions . Dr. Bowen was one of the founders of the Ohio Community Theatre Association in 1953 and, in addition to serving many years on the board, was President in 1960.

Dr. Bowen became a full-time member of the Ohio State faculty as Associate Professor in the fall of 1958 and two years later was named Director of Theatre, a position he held for 9 years. He was one of the organizers of the innovative American Playwrights

Theatre, a national organization founded by concerned playwrights and theatre practitioners to bring new works to noncommercial stages throughout the country.

A director who has probably received more enthusiastic reviews than any other in Ohio, Dr. Bowen is particularly noted for his skillful handling of realistic plays, as well as various types of contemporary drama , including Harold Pinter's brand of Theatre of the Absurd, and for operatic productions and musicals. He has been entrusted with the world premiere productions of Lawrence and Lee's The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail and Jabberwock, the comedy on the Columbus days of James Thurber which inaugurated the OSU Department of Theatre's Thurber Theatre. Other premieres have included Ronald Alexander ' s Children at Play and Burton Russell's Low on High . Musical successes have included Hanna, an original musical presented for the United Presbyterian Assembly, The Marriage of Figaro , La Perichole , Falstaff, The Merry Widow, and , most recently, Richard Strauss's opera, Salome . Included among recent successes have been the Ohio premiere of Preston Jone ' s The Last Meeting of the Knights of the White Magnolia , a revival of Clifford Odet's Awake and Sing, and Chekhov's The Three Sisters . His final production as a regular faculty member at Ohio State was the Ohio premiere of Jones' The Oldest Living Graduate.

Dr. Bowen has served as guest director with the Otterbein College Theatre. In 1966 he received his alma mater's Distinguished Service Award and in 1971 the Ed Begley Memorial Drama Award (given annually to an Otterbein graduate who has distinguished himself in theatre). His achievements have also been recognized nationally by his election to the National Theatre Conference , and he was recipient of the Ohio Arts Council Performing Individual Artist Award in 1977.

For his remarkable record and achievement as an outstanding theatre director, teacher and leader , Otterbein College is proud to present the degree of Doctor of Fine Arts to Roy H. Bowen.

OTTERBEIN LOVE SONG

1. In a quiet peaceful village there is one we love so true , She ever gives a welcome to her friends both old and new , She stands serene 'mid tree tops green, She ' s our dear Otterbein.

CHORUS:

Old Otterbein our college, we sing of thee today, Our memories round thee linger in a sweet and mystic way. 0 Otterbein , we love thee , our hearts are only thine, We pledge anew , we will be true , Dear Otterbein.

2. Her halls have their own message Of truth, and hope , and love. She guides her youths and maidens To the life that looks above , Her stately tower Speaks naught but power For our dear Otterbein!

Words by Celia Ihri g Grabill Mu sic b y Glenn Grant Grabi ll , '00
