Dr. Sherwood L. Fawcett Doctor
Dr Sherwood L Fawcett, President of Battelle Memorial Institute, has devoted his life to the humane application of modern research, determined that science shall creative ly serve society . As Battelle 's chief executive since 1968, Doctor Fawcett has spearheaded the lnstitute's entry into new areas of research and new working relationships with business, industry, education, and government that further the use of science to meet human needs
Active in national and international policymaking groups, he is a frequent spokesman on science's role in dealing with complex social problems A member of the post-war generation of nuclear physicists, Doctor Fawcett began his career at Battelle's Columbus laboratories in 1950, participating in research directed toward the development of nuclear reactors for power and naval propulsion Subsequently, he supervised programs to determine the performance and reliability of reactor fuel and structural components, directed evaluations of reactor concepts, and coordinated engineering and design studies of reactor cooling and moderating systems.
Doctor Fawcett has had managerial assignments , both at the lnstitute's Columbus Laboratories and its Pacific Northwest Laboratories at Richland, Washington . He was manager of the Department of Metallurgy and Physics at Battelle-Columbus when he was selected in 1964 to establish the Pacific Northwest Laboratories. He served as director of Battelle - Northwest until 1967, when he became executive vice president of Battelle Memorial Institute. He assumed the presidency in 1968 and was elected to the I nstitute's Board of Trustees in 1969.
Doctor Fawcett is the author of some fifty technical articles and papers He was formerly a vice president of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and chairman of the Association's section on Industrial Science Currently he is director of the Atlantic Council of the United States and Battelle's representative to the Atlantic Institute for International Affairs (Paris).
Other affiliations include the Atomic Industrial Forum, the American Nuclear Society, the American Physical Society, the Metallurgical Society of A.I .M.E , the Ohio and National Societies of Professional Engineers, Sigma Pi Sigma (Physics), Sigma Xi (Science), Tau Beta Pi (Engineering), and the Newcomen Society .
A civic leader, he is past president and a member of the Board of Trustees of Children's Hospital in Columbus , a director of the
Ohio Chamber of Commerce, past chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Columbus Area Chamber of Commerce, vice president and trustee of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, and a trustee of the Columbus Gallery of Fine Arts. He had a primary role in the creation and establishment of the Academy for Contemporary Problems. Dr. Fawcett is a trustee of Case Western Reserve University, a member of the Board of Trustees of Gonzaga University, the Board of Overseers of Whitman College, the Board of Regents of Capital University, and the Board of Trustees of the Korea Institute of Science and Technology.
A physicist, he earned his B.S degree in Engineering Physics from The Ohio State University in 1941, and following Naval Service in World War II, his M.S. and Ph.D. in Physics at Case Institute of Technology. In addition, he holds an Honorary Doctor of Science Degree from The Ohio State University and an Honorary .Doctor of Public Service Degree from the Detroit Institute of Technology. He is a member of Delta Chi social fraternity.
Scientist, executive, cIvIc leader, a man disciplined in the scientific method and objective in his approach to problems, he is warm and compassionate in pursuit of lasting benefits for all people. We at Otterbein College recognize and honor Sherwood L. Fawcett as an authoritative spokesman for science, an example to his colleagues, and a leader able to bring diverse elements together with constructive results. We take pleasure in conferring upon him the degree of Doctor of Laws.
Sanders A. Frye has shared his unique talents with Otterbein College and the Westerville community for thirty years. His varied creative interests and abilities are reflected in the physical plant of this institution and in his noteworthy inventions and collections.
"Sandy" Frye was born in Milo, Ohio, in Franklin County and attended college at nearby Ohio State University, where he earned a degree in civil engineering. His early employment experience with the Northwestern, New York Central and Pennsylvania railroads helped him develop a fascination and love for anything that involved railroads.
His interest in construction work took him to the West Virginia Road Commission and then to the L. L. LeVeque Company of Columbus, where he supervised the construction of schools, industrial buildings, commercial and apartment buildings. During
this time he directed construction of Olentangy Village in Columbus, one of the first post-World War II "complete communities . "
In 1947, he came to Otterbein College as its business manager, a post he held until 1965. During this period, significant physical growth was recorded under Mr. Frye's leadership Barlow Hall, the Alumni Stadium, the Library addition to Towers Hall, the Observatory and Planetarium additions to the Science Building, Clements, Hanby, Mayne, Scott, Sanders, Garst , Engle and Davis residence halls, the Heating Plant, the Campus Center and Cowan Hall.
Sanders Frye's activities were not limited to the campus. During this same period of time, he served as a member of Westerville City Council, the Westerville Charter Commission and the Westerville Library Board
Several of his ingenious constructions and exhibits have added to the special flavor of celebrations in Westerville : an old-fashioned trolley car for the city's Sesquicentennial, a model of Independence Hall for the Bicentennial, a children's train and a working calliope for the Fourth of July Parade .
His ingenuity was perhaps climaxed by his patented invention of the automatic pin spotter, now manufactured and marketed as an intrinsic feature of one of the nation's largest leisure-time activities, bowling. His published articles about Otterbein's then-innovative heating system brought the college recognition in 1956, long before energy was a matter of national concern. His lovely, restored home adjacent to the campus contains his extensive collections of rai Iroad lanterns and model trains.
Sanders Frye's interests, however, are not just in buildings and trains. His deep interest in young people has been reflected throughout his career. Otterbein students beyond number have been treated to his hospitality and thoughtful advice
For his outstanding service to Otterbein College during its period of greatest growth, for his continuing contributions to his community and for his abiding concern for young people, Otterbein College is proud to honor the skillful hands and creative mind of Sanders Admiral Frye with the degree Doctor of Engineering.

Her confident, courageous and direct approach in solving community problems and her service as a volunteer agent of change in the Columbus Metropolitan Area are an inspiration to our community. Otterbein College is proud to recognize her achievements and her personal dedication and to bestow upon Anne Kittredge Jeffrey the degree of Doctor of Public Service.
In 1963 the Council for Health and Welfare Service of the United Church of Christ presented a plaque to Dr and Mrs. John Alan Smith in conjunction with the American Protestant Hospital Association. The award was given "in grateful recognition of faithfulness and proficiency in the ministry of diakonia, having offered not only a significant personal witness but the quality of leadership that inspires others to pursue the same exalted goals."
John Smith received the B . A . and B . S. degrees cum laude from Otterbein College, the Master of Divinity from United Theological Seminary , and the M.D. from The Ohio State University For thirty years he served as missionary physician and medical director of Ryder Hospital in Humacao , Puerto Rico, bringing Christian compassion with healing to thousands, through hospital services and outpatient clinics and to rural patients in inaccessible areas.
He was named a Distinguished Alumnus of Otterbein in 1964, received the Medico del Ano at Ryder Hospital in 1975, and special awards from the United Evangelical Church of Puerto Rico and from the Evangelical Council of Puerto Rico . The College of Medicine of The Ohio State University presented him its Achievement Award in September , 1976 .
Doctor Smith saw Ryder Hospital grow in size, technology and service from a staff of two with 35 beds to a modern facility with a medical staff of 35 and well-equipped medical, bacteriological and X-ray laboratories, a blood bank, new operating rooms and a pharmacy three times the size of the former facility. The new outpatient facilities make adequate care possible for the hundreds of Humacao district patients who come in a steady stream by foot, horseback, bicycle, car and jeep
The war against such diseases as malaria, tuberculosis and typhoid and the continuing problems of parasites and malnutrition have occupied Doctor Smith and his associates through the years, and new methods and new facilities were matched by his compassionate love for the people of the area. Total integration of "public" and "private" facilities and the development of ambulatory care for less critically ill patients have provided means by which thousands of underprivileged Puerto Ricans have received health care equal to that of their neighbors.
Born in Reynoldsburg, Ohio, the son of the late Dr. John Franklin Smith , '10, and his wife, Katharine Barnes Smith, '01, John came in early boyhood to live in Westerville, where his father was a member of the faculty of Otterbein College. All four Smith children are graduates of Otterbein .
Doctor Smith and his wife, the former Virginia Norris, Otterbein graduate in the class of 1936, now live in Newport, Tennessee, where he is an appointee of the National Health Service Corps, serving as staff physician of Cocke County Memorial Hospital. Dr. and Mrs. Smith have three sons: John David, a graduate student in architecture; Howard Alan, a senior in medical school ; and Dwight Hamilton, an ornithologist with the Department of Agriculture in Puerto Rico.
For his remarkable service to humanity as a physician, Christian missionary, leader, honored alumnus, Otterbein College is proud to present the degree of Doctor of Humanities to John Alan Smith, M.D

1 . In a quiet peaceful village there is one we love so true , She ever gives a welcome to her friends both old and n ew, She stands serene 'mid tree tops green, She's our dear Otterbein .
CHORUS :
Old Otterbein our college , we sing of thee today , Our memories round thee linger in a sweet and mystic way 0 Otterbein , we love thee , our hearts are only thine, We pledge anew , we will be true , Dear Otterbein
2 Her halls have their own message Of truth, and hope, and love She guides her youths and maidens
To the life that looks above , Her stately tower Speaks naught but power For our dear Otterbein!
