WILLIAM C. MOFFIT DOCTOR OF MUSIC
William Moffit was born in New Philadelphia, Ohio, earned a Bachelor of School Music Degree cum laude at Baldwin-Wallace University, a Master of Music Education at the University of Michigan, and taught ten years of public school music in Tipp City and Kenton, Ohio. Mr. Moffit then was appointed marching band director at Michigan State University. In his nine years at Michigan State he developed the "Patterns of Motion" field charting techniques, and the "Sound Power" music arranging techniques.
Mr. Moffit is now marching band director and Assistant Professor of Music at the University of Houston where he directs the famed Cougar Marching Band and Cougar Brass.
Mr. Moffit has recently been notified that his more than 150 published marching band arrangements have sold more than one-half million copies, a record in the music profession. He has written seven "Patterns of Motion" textbooks and produced several training films, charting materials, and records, as aids to band directors. Mr. Moffit travels throughout the nation giving clinics, judging, guest directing, and speaking on behalf of music education and marching bands
Mr. Moffit has a great interest in Otterbein College. He will hold his sixth annual marching band workshop on our campus this summer, has donated 88 musical arrangements to Otterbein, has been a member of Otterbein's President's Club for two years, has written a Bicentennial band show for the college, and has guest directed the Otterbein Band in four appearances.
Mr. Moffit is the foremost authority on marching bands in the nation today. Mr. Moffit is an inspiring music educator. He is the driving force behind many of the men and women who attend his workshop each year.
It is for his contribution to the music profession, the magnitude of his publishing for marching bands, and his interest in Otterbein specifically, that Otterbein College is proud to honor William C. Moffit with the degree of Doctor of Music.
BISHOP JOSEPH HUGHES YEAKEL DOCTOR OF LAWS
Bishop Joseph H. Yeakel has served in a wide range of responsibilities in his 27 years as a Christian minister. After pastoral assignment in Dayton, Ohio, Hagerstown, Maryland, York, Pennsylvania,
and Silver Springs, Maryland, he was elected to the Board of Evangelism of the Evangelical United Brethren Church as assistant secretary in 1963, becoming executive secretary in 1965. In 1968 he became general secretary of the Board of Evangelism of the United Methodist Church and in 1972, was elected to the Episcopacy and assigned to the Syracuse area.
A member of Who's Who in America for the past several years, recognition by his peers has been reflected by his service on numerous boards and agencies of the church. In the Susquehanna Conference of the Evangelical United Brethren Church he was conference director of camping; president of the Board of Directors of Camp Penn; secretary of Christian Stewardship; and delegate to the General Conference. He was chairman of the General Church Program Council and has served on the General Boards of Christian Education, Missions and Publications; the Department of Stewardship; the Department of Communication; the Adult and Children's Council; the General Church Curriculum Committee; and the Youth Fellowship Committee. He has also served on numerous interboard and church union committees; the General Board of the National Council of Churches and the Division of Christian Life and Mission; the Commission on Structure for Mission of the Consultation for Church Union, the Board of Directors of CONTACT Teleministry, Inc.; Urban Young Adult Action, Inc.; trustee and chairman of the board of Scarritt College, Nashville, Tennessee; and trustee of Syracuse University, Syracuse, New York.
He is a native of Pennsylvania having been born at Mahanoy City. His boyhood and youth were spent in Pottsville, Pennsylvania, where he received his elementary and secondary schooling. He served with the U. S. Navy (Seabees) on Guam, Mariana Islands, 1945-46. He was graduated from Lebanon Valley College, Annville, Pennsylvania, and United Theological Seminary, Dayton, Ohio. He was ordained by the Pennsylvania Conference of the Evangelical United Brethren Church on October 8, 1952. The honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity was conferred by Lebanon Valley College in 1968.
Bishop Yeakel is married to Lois Josephine Shank of Waynesboro, Pennsylvania. They are the parents of five children, Claudia (Mrs. D. John McIntyre), Douglas, Joanna, Mary Jo, and Jody. So far three Yeakel children have matriculated at Otterbein College, Claudia '72, Douglas '74, and Joanna '76. All three have been consistent honor students and leaders in the College governance system.
For his outstanding service to the church, his heartfelt appreciation of the Otterbein educational environment and program, the recognition given to him by his colleagues in the ministry, his important role in the transitional years of union in the church, and his personal expression of the Christian life, Otterbein College is proud to present the degree of Doctor of Laws to Bishop Joseph H. Yeakel.
The freedom to pursu e knowled ge is one of the great blessings our Founding Fathers sought to bestow on the society they envisioned. You have been the beneficiaries of this great legacy. You have tasted the freedom to engage in the studies of your choice, to express your opinions and to pursue new opportunities for self-fulfillment.
As I congratulate you on the accomplishments reflected in your college degrees, a proud nation looks to you to help advance the continuing realization of the dream of our Founding Fathers and the aspirations of our society. We can reflect that two hundred years ago half of our population was less than twenty years of age. The author of our Declaration of Independence was thirty-three; and of its signers, sixteen were in their thirties and three were in their twenties. Young or old, our Founding Fathers cherished the concepts of indi vidual freedom and equality and were fiercely determined to direct their own destiny.
As the Bicentennial college graduating class, you are the embodiment of what America can achieve. You are both the strength and the hope of our nation. I send each of you my very best wishes for every success and personal satisfaction in your future lives.

As the oldest institution of higher education in Franklin County, it is appropriate that Otterbein College be recognized as an official Bicentennial College during the morning's commencement ceremonies. From the beginning Otterbein University was co-educational and coracial. The first two graduates in 1857 - Miss Jennie Miller and Miss Kate Winter (later the wife of Benjamin R. Hanby, '58) - were women, receiving M.A. degrees (Mistress of Arts).
Celebrating the nation's Bicentennial Year, Otterbein sponsored a Festival of American Music last fall. The Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra performed an all-American program, noted American composer Virgil Thomson participated in a festival of his works, and William Moffit arranged a special Bicentennial Show for the Otterbein Marching Band to present at homecoming. In addition, John R. Howe, '57, lectured on the meaning of the Revolution, the College's Centennial history was reprinted (copies may still be secured from the Alumni Office} and the Learning Resource Center is now cooperating on an audio-visual project for elementary students about the nation's beginnings. Otterbein appreciates the generosity of the George Gund and Clements Foundations and the cooperation of the Ohio American Revolution Bicentennial Advisory Commission in helping to make these Bicentennial activities possible.
As the country enters its third century, Otterbein looks with pride to the past and toward the future with confidence.
In a quiet peaceful village, there is one we love so true, She ever gives a welcome to her friends both old and new. She stands serene 'mid tree tops green, She's our dear Otterbein.
(Chorus)
Old Otterbein our college , we sing of thee today; Our memories round thee linger , in a sweet and mystic way . 0 Otterbein, we love thee, our hearts are only thine, We pledge anew, we will be true, dear Otterbein.
