DR. ROBERT PRICE DOCTOR OF HUMANE LETTERS
Teacher, Scholar, Author-Dr. Robert Price has devoted a lifetime to academic and scholarly pursuits. "My first and last ambition is to be a school teacher; everything else is subordinate," he once told a student reporter, and he has been faithful to this ideal. His success can be measured by the fact that undergraduates at Otterbein College frequently advised freshmen, "Take Price; you'll learn something." In 1960 he was a recipient of the Honorary Alumni Award for his dedicated service as a teacher and a counselor of students.
Elected a member of Phi Beta Kappa in his junior year, he received his B.Ph. degree from Denison University in 1928. From The Ohio State University he received an M.A. degree in 1930 and a Ph.D . degree in 1943
He joined the faculty of Otterbein College in 1945, but immediately took a year's leave of absence to accept a Library of Congress Fellowship. As Professor of English for twenty-five years and as Chairman of the Department of English, he upheld high standards and influenced many students. He was one of the founders of Torch and Key, the scholastic honorary society, and a long-time sponsor of Quiz an Quill, the student literary society, which publishes annually a magazine of the same name.
Recognizing the need for a special collection of Otterbein history, manuscripts and rare books, with the assistance of his wife, Hazel, he organized the Otterbein Room and served as its first curator.
A well-known author, he has written several books and contributed articles and poetry to a variety of magazines and newspapers. He is interested in American history, folklore and literature. He has received the Ohioana Library Award and the American Association for State and Local History Award .
He has been successful in stimulating other writers by listening sympathetically to their problems and by offering suggestions. To encourage faculty authors, he helped found The Otterbein Miscellany Interested in local authors, he and his wife in recent years have edited annually a bibliography with comments called "Some Westerville Writers." He also contributed a series of articles to Public Opinion on literary traditions in the community called "Westerville Writers. " He is active in the Westerville Historical Society and is the Society 's archivist.
Since his retirement he has continued his interest in such organizations as the Society for the Study of Midwestern Literature, Ohio Folklore Society, Ohio Historical Society, Ohioana Library Association and Phi Beta Kappa.
For these many and varied contributions to the academic and scholarly life of Otterbein College, Westerville, the State and Nation, Otterbein College is proud to bestow the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters on Dr. Robert Price, a distinguished faculty member
JESSE OWENS DOCTOR OF PUBLIC SERVICE
Internationally known for his athletic achievements, Je sse Owens has established a formidable record in track and field competition which has marked him as one of the most outstanding athletes of this century. In high school he established world records as he led Cleveland East Tech to consecutive state championships in track and field. While a sophomore at Ohio State University he set three world records and tied another in a dual meet against Michigan. It has been termed the "g reatest single athletic performance of all time. "
At the 1936 Olympic games in Berlin , Germany, Mr. Owens gained international fame with individual victories in the 100-meter and 200meter dashes and the broad jump. In addition, he set the pace for the successful 400-meter relay team For these victories he garnered four gold medals , an achievement which has never been equaled in track and field
For his prowess in track, he was named as the "grea test track athlete of the half century, " "Track Man of the Century," and " Track Man of the Age." •
Apart from athletic competition, Jes se Owens had been a crusader for many humanitarian causes. He has worked with youth in all parts of the nation to improve their recreational opportunities and to inspire them to become good citizens. In Chicago he ha s helped hundreds of youngsters secure sparetime and vacation jobs which often meant the difference between eating and not eating. From police magistrates he has gained for many a boy a second chance. He ha s organized an annual Junior Sports Jamboree for track and swimming junior Olympics involving several thousand youths annually i n Illinois.
A friend on the winning Olympic relay team in 1936 , once sa id : "Jesse has the deepest love of life and hi s fellow man I ever knew He doesn 't regard what he does for the welfare of those kids as socia l work. He feels toward them as though they were his own children. He 's so supercharged with good will that he 's inexhau stible ."
For the humanitarian spirit as expressed in his books The Jesse Owens Story, Blackthink and / Hav e Changed and for hi s work with the youth of the nation, Otterbein College is proud to pres ent the degree of Doctor of Public Service to Jes se Owens.
I am inclined to be sparing with words of congratulations, advice, and challenge to this year's college graduates, for you hear more than enough of them at commencement time, and you are eager to turn from words to action.
From early childhood, for the most part, the classroom has been your world. Now the world becomes your classroom. The education you have gained so far is precious capital. As you invest it in the service of mankind, it will continue to grow and pay you rich dividends.
Your opportunities for service and achievement are wide. For the first time in your lifetime, the world is on the threshold of an era of lasting peace. The United States is astir with the forces of a profound renewal - social, economic, political - and reaching for new possibilities in its third century of independence.
The coming age will belong to you. America is grateful for what you are, and much in need of what you can become. I wish you Godspeed on the great adventure that I ies ahead.

In a quiet peaceful village , there is one we love so true, She ever gives a welcome to her friends both old and new.
She stands serene ' mid tree tops green, She's our dear Otterbein
Old Otterbein our college, we sing of thee today; Our memories round thee linger, in a sweet and mystic way. 0 Otterbein , we love thee, our hearts are only thine, We pledge anew, we will be true, dear Otterbein.
