HONORARY DEGREES

Hubert M. James

DOCTOR OF SCIENCE

Dr. Hubert M. James has been associated with the Department of Physics at Purdue University since 1936. After a leave of absence from 1941 to 1946 he returned to Purdue University as Professor of Physics.

A West Virginia native, Dr. James holds an A.B . degree from Randolph-Macon College. He holds an M.A. from Harvard University and was awarded his Ph.D. there in 1934. In 1939 Dr. James became a Guggenheim Fellow and carried out research at the Institute for Astrophysics in Oslo, Norway. During the period 1941 to 1946 he worked on radar systems design at the M.I.T. Radiation Laboratory. While there he co-authored the book "Theory of Servomechanisms." He served as head of the Department of Physics at Purdue from 1958 until 1966 and then returned to teaching and research_

Dr. James is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and member of the American Association of University Professors, of which he is a former chairman at Purdue. He is also a member of the Solid State Sciences Panel of the National Research Council, the American Association of Physics Teachers and numerous honorary societies. In 1970 Dr. James received the Research Award of the Purdue Chapter of Sigma for his recent contributions to science

Dr. James has published over 60 technical papers in several of the major fields of physics. His work until 1939 was largely in the field of chemical physics, and was concerned with development of the quantum theory of atomic and molecular structure. With Dr . A. S Coolidge, he made the first accurate theoretical calculations of molecular binding energies. In 1939 he turned his attention to the study of high polymers. He developed the network theory of high polymers, and made the first theoretical prediction of the stress-strain relation for soft rubber-like materials. Since 1946, his work has been largely in the field of solid state physics.

We recognize and honor Dr. James for his lifetime of contribu·tions to education and science.

Ja m es V in c e Miller

DOCTOR OF LAWS

Dr. James V. Miller has served as President of Pacific University, Forest Grove, Oregon, since January l, 1971. From 1964 to 1971 he held the position of Academic Dean and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Otterbein.

President Miller, an Indiana native, holds a B.A. from Indiana Central College, a B.D. from United Seminary and a Ph.D. from Boston University. From 1950 to 1964 he served on the faculty of Bates College attaining the rank of Professor and the Chairmanship of the Department of Philosophy and Religion. He and his wife, the former Mildred Hockersmith, have two daughters, Maryllyn and Rachel.

Dr. Miller has held membership in Rotary International, Newcomen Society of North America, American Philosophical Association,

Danforth Associates, American Association of University Professors and the Regional Council on International Education. He has served as trustee of the Lewiston Maine Public Library, on the Board of Governors of the Westerville Pastoral Counseling Service and as an officer in the Ohio College Association. He is an active churchman and presented radio lectures for the Maine Council of Churches. He is listed in Who's Who in America.

At Otterbein Dr. Miller supplied leadership for the development of a new calendar and curriculum, an innovative sabbatical program and the new college governance plan. He also played an important role in the creation of the Otterbein Miscellany, for faculty publications, cooperative programs with other colleges, and the Intercultural Center. He simultaneously guided change and strengthened the Otterbein sense of community.

We are proud to honor President Miller as a teacher-scholar and administrator-institution builder. We recognize his contributions to Otterbein College. We cherish his friendship.

J. Barkley Rosser

THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON

TO THE 1971 GRADUATING CLASS OTTERBEIN COLLEGE

The continued success of the American Experiment depends primarily on the qualities of heart, mind and spirit of our young people. As college graduates you have not only the training and idealism, but the opportunity and responsibility to build through further study or through ' your chosen careers the kind of society which will make further generations proud to identify with your accomplishments.

I know that you will not fail to become part of a positive response to the needs of America: a response worthy of her resources and capacities; worthy of the historic courage and the wisdom and will of her people. Your studies have given you · the tools to dedicate yourselves in a very special way to helping overcome some of the most difficult problems we face; and as you become further involved in these efforts, you will continue to discover more examples of the ways in which the complexities of modern life make it imperative for us to work together.

The destiny of our nation is not divided into yours and ours. We share it. There can be no generation gap in America. We must all keep an open mind and forthright spirit, balance the courage of our convictions with the courage of our uncertainties, triumph over bigotry and prejudice and recapture the unity of purpose that has always been our strength.

Your fresh ideas and candid approach can be a strong deterrent to division and a valuable asset in building the alliance of the generations we so urgently need if we are to advance the cause we share. As I congratulate you on this graduation day, I do so in full confidence that you will answer this need both in your careers and in your daily lives.
