PROF. RAINES ANNOUNCES VARSITY DEBATE TEAMS

Teams for the Varsity Debates for the entire conference debate season have been announced by the Public Speaking Department.

The affirmative team will meet Hir­ am on the home floor o n March 4.

Palmer Fletcher, Robert Bromeley, and Karl Kumler will spea k in this de­ bate in the order named.

On March 9 the negative team com­ posed of Philip C harle s, J oh n Hudock, and Duane Harrold will go to Ohio \ or them at Ada for a forensic tilt.

EDITORIALS TIME CLOCKS During the la t year or two there ha bee n a lot of discussion in college papers the country over, and in the city journal a well, of t he question of greater freedom in college require111 11 ts for attendance at class and lec­ t ure . T h e almo t universal ystem in th e U nited States, man y students a sert, is the time-clock idea, a compulor y enforcement of- absolutely regular and mechanical attendance upon every cla room exercise. So far has this gone, that men are found who will deny credit to a tudent if he is absent from a regular class session, excuse or no exc use. Even upper class s tudents a rc held to thi s mechanical rule, intead of being· given a freedom of choice and ome independence of ac­ tion. and of being thrown upon their own re ponsibili ty for ticcess or fail­ ure in t he work.

T h e opinions of college editors are cer tainly of interest in this connection .

A monthly bulletin called " What Col­ lege re Doing", put out by Ginn and ompany, ha gathered a number of editorial aud other utterances that are hi b.ly s ugg stiv e-- as to what the stu­ d n ts at least are thinking about com­ pulsory attendance.
