First Dragon Boat Israel festival a huge success By Nicola Hamer The first Dragon Boat Israel festival was held May 17-18 on Lake Kinneret (Sea of Galilee). The event, conceived in Ottawa, was a tremendous success in its first year. However, when Jewish Federation of Ottawa Chair Debbie Halton-Weiss told Mitchell Bellman that she and several teammates from her Ottawa dragon boat team wanted to hold a dragon boat festival in Israel, he told her it was one of the craziest ideas he’d ever heard. “But I also thought it was a great idea,” said Bellman, the Federation’s president and CEO. Shaul Zohar, an Israeli member of Partnership2Gether, echoed that sentiment. “When they told me what they wanted to do, I said, ‘that’s completely crazy.’ But sometimes crazy is what you need to get new things done.”
Zohar lives in the northern town of Kiryat Shmona, very near the Canada Centre in Metulla. “We already think Canadians are crazy,” he said. “They built a skating rink up here. Why not a dragon boat festival?” “That’s crazy,” said HaltonWeiss, also chair of Dragon Boat Israel (DBI), is what everyone said to her, when she first told them what she wanted to do. “But, all I was hearing while doing community work was that we need new ways to connect people to Israel. And what is better than a team sport like dragon boat racing? Young, old, disabled, men, women, they can all paddle a dragon boat. And it is a great spectator sport. To me, it seemed perfect.” There were many significant hurdles to get over in the two years since Halton-Weiss approached Bellman with the idea. They got

Team Moishe’s Eddy Cook is top DBI fundraiser By Nicola Hamer Before the Dragon Boat Israel (DBI) festival, Ottawa businessman Eddy Cook had never set foot in a dragon boat. Neither had most of his dragon boat teammates, so he knew they had no chance of winning a medal on the water. But there was one race he was determined to win: the donations race. Cook, who has only been to Israel once before – “So long ago it doesn’t count anymore” – convinced his wife, Sandi, to go for their 25th wedding anniversary. When he heard about DBI and the Jewish Federation of Ottawa’s Adventure Israel Tour, he knew it would be the perfect way to go.
“We’re very active and it looked like a lot of fun, so I collected my gang to come with us.” The gang Cook refers to is called ‘Moishe’ and consists of Eddy and Sandi, Peter and Pam Stelcner, Debra and Peter Szirtes and Alan and Michelle Kufsky. Together, they formed the core of the DBI team Moishe. As they collected more friends for their team and the tour, they also set their sights on fundraising. “Peter Stelcner put it this way, ‘when you go to someone’s house, you bring something to thank them for their hospitality. Why should it be different when you go to another country?’” said Cook.
DBI organizers had been hoping to raise $20,000 for the two Israeli charities it was supporting, Youth Futures and Net@. By the DBI festival weekend, team Moishe alone had raised almost $17,000, contributing to a total of more than $50,000 raised. On the Adventure Tour, Moishe team members quickly got a reputation for their raucous, goofy behaviour. “To be a member of Moishe, you have to be loud and annoying,” said Cook. “And have lots of fun.” But their focus on having fun hid a serious side, as they never lost sight of their fundraising goal. Cook, who was captain of team Moishe,
was DBI’s top fundraiser. “It wasn’t difficult,” he said. “I just sent an e-mail to everyone I’ve known in the last 10 years. Then I followed up with a phone call. E-mail isn’t enough on its own. People want that personal connection.” Cook is bringing that same determination to his role as chair of fundraising at the Ottawa Jewish Community Foundation. “We always go to the same few people in Ottawa, but the big givers are getting burned out. They want to see other people standing up. I tell people, ‘You don’t have to be a millionaire to give money. You have great lives: two cars, a big house and great vacations. (Continued on page 2 )
