Pamela Wallin to speak about success at networking event By Michael Regenstreif Senator Pamela Wallin began her working life as a social worker at the maximum security Prince Albert Penitentiary in her home province of Saskatchewan before becoming a journalist and one of Canada’s best-known broadcasters. Later she was a diplomat, serving as Canada’s consul general in New York City before her appointment to the Senate just over three years ago. By any measure, she has enjoyed a successful career. Wallin will be the keynote speaker, February 28, at Success, a networking event hosted by jnet. Speaking with the Ottawa Jewish Bulletin from her Senate office, Wallin said the common factor to each of the stops on her career path has been public service. “Journalism is a public service,” she said, “a free and open media being an important aspect of a democratic society.”
A desire to continue serving the public, she said, has motivated her service as a diplomat and senator in her post-media career. Although Wallin had no party affiliation during the years she worked in media, she was appointed to her diplomatic post by Liberal prime minister Jean Chrétien and now serves in the Senate as a Conservative. “Prime minister Chrétien asked me to serve as consul general in New York following the devastating events of 9/11,” she said. Representing Canada at that crucial time in that important place was a request Wallin said she could not refuse. Wallin led Canada’s diplomatic team in New York from 2002 to 2006. Wallin returned to Canada following her four-year term in New York. In 2007, Prime Minister Steven Harper asked her to sit on the Independent Panel on Canada’s Future Role in Afghanistan. Harper appointed her to
the Senate on December 22, 2008. As a senator, Wallin has maintained a strong focus on foreign affairs and defence issues as chair of the National Security and Defence Committee, and by serving on the Special Committee on Anti-terrorism and the Foreign Affairs and International Trade Committee. Commenting on events that have unfolded over the past year in the Middle East, Wallin said the process of change brought on by the Arab Spring has been both “frightening and exciting.” Although the “desire for change” emanating from long-repressed Arab societies is exciting to see, she described the rise of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt as troubling. “Democracy takes struggle,” she added, “and the populations need time.” Wallin also applauded the government’s strong support for the State of Israel. ‘Israel has no greater friend than Canada’ By John Baird Minister of Foreign Affairs (Editor’s note: This article is an abridged version of Foreign Minister John Baird’s address, January 30, at the Herzliya Conference at IDC Herzliya in Israel.) I have been asked to address the topic of leadership. In that vein, I wish to deliver reflections on three areas as they relate to leadership in the CanadaIsrael context: first, historical factors and recent developments across the Middle East and North Africa; second, the basis of Canada’s care and concern; and third, a way forward. When it comes to world affairs, we find the greatest effectiveness in working with others – partner nations with whom we see eye to eye.
Canada is what I like to call a “smart power.” And this is what has allowed us, throughout our history, to “punch above our weight,” if you will. It is how we continue to “punch above our weight” today – in areas where we choose to do so. Over the course of our history, Canada has never shied away from standing up for what is right and just. Indeed, like Israel, Canada has fought mightily against hatred and intolerance. We have paid a high toll for the principles that guide us. In two world wars, and in conflicts before and since, we have paid in blood spilled and lives lost, all in defence of freedom,
