Ottawa celebrates Israel’s Yom Ha’Atzmaut By Ilana Belfer It was a sea of white and blue, May 10, when more than 1,000 people gathered to celebrate Israel’s 63rd birthday at Lansdowne Park’s Aberdeen Pavilion. “We must continue to ... rejoice in Israel’s independence alongside our brothers and sisters in the Holy Land – Am Yisrael Chai,” said event chair Penny Torontow in her welcome to Ottawa’s annual Yom Ha’Atzmaut celebration presented by the Soloway Jewish Community Centre and the Vered Israel Cultural and Educational Program. Torontow later introduced Israel’s Ambassador to Canada Miriam Ziv who brought on-screen greetings on behalf of the State of Israel via video. “Although the land of Israel is thick with Jewish history, it can be

easy to forget how young Israel really is,” Ziv said. Ziv mentioned Israel’s “extraordinary” evolution since its Declaration of Independence in 1948, but also emphasized its core values that have remained unchanged: democracy, commitment to civil freedoms, and a longing for peace. “The State of Israel is a testimony to the enduring strength of the Jewish people,” said Ziv. She called Yom Ha’Atzmaut an opportunity to take pride and demonstrate solidarity, a message she also delivered the evening before at the Israeli Embassy’s Yom Ha’Atzmaut reception at the Fairmont Château Laurier ballroom. “I think it’s great to see all the faces of the Jewish community in one place,” said Meghan Polowin, (Continued on page 2 )

Agudath Israel to include women in the minyan

By Nicola Hamer for Agudath Israel Agudath Israel Congregation will soon include women in the counting of a minyan. On May 11, the synagogue’s Board of Directors unanimously adopted a recommendation by the congregation’s Ritual Committee to include women in the counting of a minyan, as part of its evolution towards an egalitarian Conservative

synagogue. “This is a wonderful step in of the development of women’s participation and leadership at Agudath Israel that began 27 years ago when a group of women congregants formed their own weekend prayer group,” said Howard Cohen, president of Agudath Israel. In 2006, the congregation voted overwhelmingly for full participation of women in the Torah service

at Agudath Israel. A year ago, the Ritual Committee began to examine the specific issues surrounding women’s participation as part of a minyan and as Shelihat Tsibbur (prayer leader). The new policy will come into effect on Erev Shavuot, June 7. Rabbi Charles Popky is delighted with the timing. “Shavuot is when we mark the (Continued on page 2)
