Community service is in Ian Sherman’s DNA By Cynthia Nyman Engel The remarkable Ian Sherman is in the headlines again. In 1999 it was as recipient of the Freiman Family Young Leadership Award. This time, it’s because he is the 2011 recipient of the Gilbert Greenberg Distinguished Service Award, the highest tribute the Ottawa Jewish community can bestow on an individual for exceptional service over the course of many years. Initiated in 1980, the award bears the name of Gilbert Greenberg, the late past president of the Jewish Community Council of Ottawa/Vaad Ha’Ir, who exemplified the qualities of leadership the award seeks to recognize each year. The award will be presented on Wednesday, June 1 at the annual general meeting of the Jewish Federation of Ottawa. Ottawa’s Jewish community
knows a winner when it sees one, and Ian is a definite winner. For two decades, he has devoted extraordinary amounts of time, energy and strength to making the community the best it can be. And, at age 52, he’s still got plenty of commitment to be tapped. “My whole Jewish community journey started in the early ‘90s with the Soloway JCC when Ron Prehogan and several other people asked me to get involved with the Finance Committee,” Ian said. He accepted because there was a significant community need, he enjoyed being involved and he was hooked. “My mom wasn’t surprised,” he chuckled. “As a kid I lived at the JCC.” It was a propitious fit for the (Continued on page 2)

Wednesday, June 1 at the annual general meeting of the Jewish Federation of Ottawa. When the 23-year-old Morris, and his wife, Lillian, moved to Ottawa in 1953, their first order-ofbusiness was to search out the Jewish community’s central gathering spot. “I was used to going to the (Continued on page 2)

Leadership a passion for Lisa Miller By Cynthia Nyman Engel Lisa Miller has been named recipient of the Freiman Family Young Leadership Award for 2011. Established in 1988, the award recognizes a member of the Ottawa Jewish community under the age of 40 who has rendered exceptional service to the community. The award will be presented on Wednesday, June 1 at the annual general meeting of the Jewish Federation of Ottawa. Like many who grow up in a large Jewish community, Lisa had to adjust to her new surroundings after she married and settled in Ottawa. “Coming from Montreal where there are lots of choices to become involved in Jewish life, it quickly became clear to me that in a smaller community setting you don’t have the same options,” Lisa told the Bul-
letin. “In Ottawa, it was so easy to become an active member of the community.” And, fortunately for the community, she decided to do just that. “My initial integration into Jewish communal involvement was through membership in the Young Women’s Leadership Council (YWLC),” says the 37-year-old. “It was an absolutely invaluable experience.” At YWLC she met, and befriended, like-minded contemporaries, learned the composition, workings and needs of the community, and identified the areas where her particular skills set could best be utilized. She was so impressed with the YWLC that, after completing the program, she agreed to serve a term as council co-chair and today continues to conduct workshops for, and make presentations to, the group.
Lisa currently chairs the Ottawa Jewish Community School Board, which comprises Hillel Academy and Yitzhak Rabin High School. She served a three-year term on the Soloway Jewish Community Centre Board and was a table captain in 2009 at Choices, the Women’s Campaign event. Lisa is president of DMHS Group, a management consulting firm, and the fact that she specializes in the area of industrial psychology has proven extremely beneficial to the community. The Federation called on her expertise when creating the Jewish Leadership Development Institute (JLDI), a program funded by the Federation and geared to developing lay leadership. Lisa developed the program and is continually revamping and improving it. (Continued on page 2)
