openOttawa symposium participants urged to embrace being Jewish and participating in Jewish community By Jacqueline Shabsove “I’m a Jew because I believe that being Jewish helps me be a better human being. It’s not about isolating ourselves from the world, it’s about together defining ourselves and celebrating all the opportunities that Judaism brings us to.” That declaration by keynote speaker Shawn Landres was voiced early in the day to 60 of Ottawa’s young Jewish leaders – aged 22 to 35 – taking part in the openOttawa symposium, April 3, at the Minto Suites Hotel. Participants were challenged to embrace the importance and personal significance of being Jewish and participating in a Jewish community in the 21st century. The symposium, presented by
the Jewish Federation of Ottawa, featured Landres and his Jumpstart co-founder Joshua Avedon, along with Scott McGrath, founder of 4Square Group, and discussed the needs and direction required to engage the emerging generation of young Jewish adults in Ottawa. Jumpstart, a Los Angeles based organization, provides early stage Jewish non-profits with networking opportunities and the tools needed for success. McGrath, a therapist in private practice and an active volunteer with the Annex Shul in Toronto, has recently been trained to prepare Jewish educators and leaders in ways to engage LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) youth (Continued on page 2 )

Rabbi Simes visits his students Students, teachers and staff at the Ottawa Jewish Community School had a special surprise, April 12, when Rabbi Yehuda Simes paid a prePassover visit to the school. Rabbi Simes, a very popular Judaic Studies teacher at the school, was seriously injured in a highway accident on June 20 last year and has since been working hard at his recovery. His presence in the classroom has been sorely missed and everyone was delighted to finally get a chance to see him again. During an assembly, Rabbi Simes spoke to the students about how the accident has affected his life and his faith. The experience was very moving for everyone. Afterward, students surrounded Rabbi Simes, all of them wanting to talk personally with him. Rabbi Simes’ visit was recorded by reporters from CBC Radio’s The Current. The segment on Rabbi Simes was scheduled to air on April 21. (Photo/caption: Nicola Hamer)
