Stunning concert launches Holocaust Education Week By Michael Regenstreif Holocaust Education Week in Ottawa was launched, November 9, with a stunning and poignant concert at the Shenkman Centre by the Raanana Symphonette Orchestra of Israel. The bulk of the orchestra’s program was a tribute to Alma Rosé. A violinist born in Vienna in 1906, Alma was the daughter of prominent violinist Arnold Rosé, and the niece of composer Gustav Mahler. In the 1930s, Alma founded Die Wiener Walzermädeln, a women’s orchestra, which performed to great acclaim throughout Europe. Captured by the Nazis and sent to Auschwitz in 1943, Alma’s life was spared when the Nazi guards heard her playing the violin. The SS officers put Alma in charge of a women’s orchestra, Mädchenorchester von Auschwitz. She died there on April 4, 1944. The pieces performed by the Raanana Symphonette during their tribute to Alma Rosé were all compositions performed by Alma and her orchestras and included both symphonic pieces like Bach’s “Double Concerto” and operatic selections including Lehár’s “Vilja Lied” from The Merry Widow. The vocal soloist for the operatic repertoire was mezzo-soprano Karin Shifrin. The principal instrumental soloist was Nitai Zori, the Raanana Symphonette Orchestra’s concert-

master, who frequently dazzled the audience with his virtuosity on the violin. An audio-visual biographical documentary about Alma Rosé was interspersed with the musical selections during the tribute. As the tribute ended, Zori held up the violin he had been playing throughout the evening as the recorded narration announced that the instrument had been rescued from Auschwitz. A series of Stars of David within each other was carved into the back of the violin. There was no conductor on the podium during the tribute to Alma Rosé. In keeping with the fact that (Continued on page 2)
