Sea Lions race in Ottawa’s annual Dragon Boat Festival
Sixteen young adults from Ottawa travelled to Israel last month on a Social Action Mission. After completing their project in Kiryat Shmona, the group, seen here at the Kotel, spent their final Shabbat in Jerusalem. See stories on page 17.
By Benita Baker Ottawa’s Sea Lions Dragon Boat team has done it again. For the second year in a row, this group of 22 indomitable women – Lions of Judah, their daughters and invited guests – joined together as competitors and fundraisers at the 17th annual Ottawa Dragon Boat Festival, June 18-20, at Mooney’s Bay. The festival, which has raised more than $1.8 million since its inception, is the largest event of its kind in North America. Rabbi Simes critically injured in highway accident By Michael Regenstreif Rabbi Yehuda Simes, a popular Judaic Studies teacher at the Ottawa Jewish Community School, was critically injured, June 20, when the family van rolled over several times on Interstate Highway 81 near Orleans, N.Y., after swerving to avoid hitting a deer on the highway. The van was being driven by Shaindel Simes, the rabbi’s wife. She and their seven children were treated for relatively minor injuries from the accident, which occurred en route to Ottawa following a weekend visit to Rochester, N.Y. Rabbi Simes was taken to a hos-
pital in Syracuse, N.Y., where he underwent emergency surgery. He has since remained there in intensive care. Rabbi Simes was paralyzed below the waist following the accident, but was conscious and alert during the weeks following his surgery. Doctors cautioned that it would take several more weeks of healing before he could be reassessed and his prognosis determined. The accident occurred just as the Ottawa Jewish Community School – created by the amalgamation of Hillel Academy and Yitzhak Rabin High School – was ending the
