Ottawa team wins hockey tournament in Israel By Roger Greenberg Was the First Annual Roger Neilson Memorial Hockey Tournament just an average hockey tournament? Not a chance! Starting with the fact that it took place in Metulla, Israel. The tournament, January 26 to 28, featured six teams competing for the honour of hoisting the trophy and was the fourth international tournament organized by the Israeli Recreational Hockey Association (IRHA). This was the first time an Ottawa team participated in an IRHA tournament. Well, a team that was organized in Ottawa – as it included Ottawans Steve Baker, Mitchell Bellman, Jeff Hunt, Peter Hudson,
Dave Nicol, Mitch Miller, Shawn Rivers, Bob Wener and me. Also with us were Hart Searle from Calgary, Sol Kassorla from New York, Rod Black from Toronto, and Ralf Wener and Esther Silver from Israel. From our first game against an American team, we knew we had an advantage when the starting line of Bellman (left wing), Rivers (centre) and Hunt (right wing) produced two goals. Steinitz also met with other ministers and officials, and with representatives of Ottawa’s business and Jewish communities. He was on a North American tour that also included stops in New York, Boston and Toronto. “We [also] came out with a ... taxation plan. We raised taxes, but
made a seven-year commitment to reduce taxes. This will give us some kind of an advantage as we did the opposite of most countries,” he said. “We think we are on the eve of significant economic growth, focused mainly on promoting hightech industries and biotechnology, advanced agriculture devices, satellites and many other things. We think we should promote cooperation with Canadian companies,” said Steinitz, a member of the Likud Party. He suggested that joint funding could be put in place to assist (Continued on page 2)
