Mitzvah Day has ‘most successful year yet’

By Benita Baker Judging by the sheer number of people involved, the Jewish Federation of Ottawa’s Fifth Annual Mitzvah Day, Sunday, December 6, was a resounding success. More than 550 volunteers, from toddlers to seniors, helped to organize, supervise and perform mitzvahs to benefit people in need in Ottawa.

“This is a unique opportunity for the people of our community to give back to the general community in a meaningful way,” said Linda Kerzner, Federation Women’s Campaign chair.

The Soloway Jewish Commu-

nity Centre (JCC) bustled with activity, laughter, purpose, and smiling faces. Throughout the meeting and conference rooms, and the preschool classrooms, children worked diligently away at their mitzvah projects. For the Children’s Aid Society, they created 130 Activity kits filled with puzzles, paper airplanes and the pieces to make stuffed bears. For kids at CHEO with mental illness, they stuffed balloons with sand, decorated ‘How Am I Feeling’ charts and packaged them into 70 therapy kits.

All Hillel Academy students perform in Chanukah production

By Michael Regenstreif For the first time ever, Hillel Academy marked Chanukah with a musical production, Chanukah Around the World, which involved all of the school’s students, from kindergarten through Grade 8.

Hundreds of delighted parents and grandparents packed the school gym to capacity, December 16, to see the show.

The show was conceived and written by Grade 3 Judaic studies teacher Ruth Lebovich, the co-ordinator of the school’s Love of Israel and Jewish holiday programs. She said the concept was to see the Maccabees of ancient Israel go around the modern

world and see how Chanukah is celebrated in six different places: Brazil, Japan, India,

South Africa, Hawaii and Canada. Music teacher Shannon Edy Smith found music

from each of the six countries being visited by the Maccabbees.

Months of preparation went into creating and directing a show that saw all students performing in acting and/or singing roles.

A slide show, shown at the beginning of the program,

showed the process of putting the production together – from conception through rehearsals. As well, the walls of the gym were decorated with Chanukah-themed artwork prepared by the students.

They made hundreds of toys for cats and dogs, stuffed 200 bags with food for the homeless and made frozen cookie dough for parents staying at Ronald McDonald House.

With personal hygiene items donated from hotels and samples from doctors’ offices, they filled bags with soap, toothpaste, Tylenol and chewing gum for residents of the Élisabeth Bruyère Health Centre and for parents of sick children at CHEO. “For many young children, this is their first experience at volunteerism,” said Stacey Segal, Mitzvah Day chair.

“We want them to have fun today so that they will want to continue giving.

They learn that making a difference is easy and fun.”

Indeed, Segal’s children have caught the mitzvah bug. She has been involved in planning the event since its inception, and her children have always happily participated. As soon as her hair reaches the requisite10

flurry of activity. In return for their donation of a toonie, children participated in such games and challenges as jump rope, hula hoop, sit-ups and basketball.

Across the way in Hillel Lodge, youngsters worked alongside seniors decorating picture holders, canvas tote bags and change purses.

At the Lodge’s hair salon, five people donated hair to Locks of Love.

Mitzvah Day is growing in participation as well as in organizations served. The volunteer squad was augmented by the Jewish Montessori Preschool and

the Ottawa Reconstructionist Havurah, who came as a group for the first time this year.

Mitzvah Day is also extending into Mitzvah days.

A blood drive, organized through Canadian Blood Services, lasted a week. As a lead-in to the event, Charles H. Hulse Public School, which has a predominately Muslim student population, teamed with Hillel Academy to collect books for a school in Iqaluit that burned down, and Yitzhak Rabin High School organized a fundraising volleyball event.

In partnership with Sole Responsibility, gently used running shoes were collected for African refugees and Jenny Shinder, director of the Ganon Preschool, was on hand to promote the Birthday Angels Project, an initiative of Weizmann Science Canada, which provides disadvantaged children in Israel with birthday parties.

“This is a wonderful event,” said Jonathan Hollinger, a volunteer who attended the event with his children.

“I think it is something that schools and the community should be doing all the time, not just one weekend a year.”

The Ottawa community is most definitely grateful for the good deeds coming its way. Last year, one CHEO parent was so appreciative of the gift she received, and for the motive behind it, that she came to the Soloway JCC to thank Federation Development Associate Lindsay Rothenberg in person.

Mitzvah Day volunteers were treated to a sprawling buffet breakfast and a visit from Spartacat. Harold Feder, chair of the Ottawa Jewish Community Foundation, presented teenager and avid volunteer Michael Calof with the Mitzvah Day Doer Award.

“This was our most successful year yet,” said Rothenberg. “It gets bigger and better every year.”

Michael Ignatieff links Chanukah story to understanding Canadian freedom

By Cynthia Nyman Engel Opening his remarks with “Chag Sameach,” Opposition Leader Michael Ignatieff reminded his audience that the Chanukah story, the story of a miracle, is one that echoes through Jewish history with fearful symmetry.

“The miracle of the oil is not so remote to survivors of the Shoah, their children and grandchildren,” he said.

“Nor is it so remote to this country. Canada bears the imprint of survivors – not only of the Holocaust, but of a century’s worth of human tragedy and conflict.”

Liberal Party of Canada, was the keynote speaker, December 13, at Temple Israel’s Annual Chanukah Celebration of Freedom.

“My father came to Canada with his family as refugees from the Bolshevik revolution,” he said. “This country gave him a new chance, and he loved the place, as people do, who have been given a second chance.”

Nonetheless, he said, despite how ‘Canadian’ his dad became, he always remained a Russian refugee, and his two sons grew up with the songs of their father’s Orthodox faith in their ears.

“And,” he grinned, “with his unwieldy last name, too.

“This is a secular truth of the Chanukah story – one with special meaning for us as Canadians. Our society is built on diversity. Our differences sustain us. The Chanukah story reflects the

most basic meaning of freedom in our society: the capacity to be who we are and who we wish to be.

“Freedom in Canadian society requires that our government and our public

institutions treat us with equal respect, no matter what our origins are, or where in the country we live,” he said. “The Chanukah story is not just about an eight-day miracle, but a parable of unity.”

Pointing out that Canada was built on the conviction that we are not a collection of communities, but one great people bound to each other by the promise of equality, opportunity and justice for all, he stressed the need for vigilance in defence of Canada’s unique understanding of freedom.

“In our Canadian understanding, government is neither an unlimited good nor a necessary evil, but rather it creates and sustains the framework of opportunity that makes freedom possible,” he said.

“We cannot fight our partisan battles – we cannot try to win elections – by pitting one community against another, one region against another, one group of Canadians against another.

“It is wrong to use Israel as a wedge to divide the Jewish community for partisan gain,” said Ignatieff in reference to pamphlets the Conservative Party recently sent to Jewish voters in several ridings in the Montreal, Toronto and Winnipeg areas with large Jewish populations.

“And it is reckless for political leaders to try to score points by branding one another as ‘anti-Israel’ to try to

win votes by claiming a monopoly on supporting Israel.

“We can never pick which groups are entitled to freedom of speech. All must speak and all must be heard.

Speech may offend, but speech must never intimidate, strike fear or silence – especially on our university campuses. Freedom is a balance between necessary affirmation and necessary respect.”

Asking that he be permitted “a little goyish interpretation,” Ignatieff said the Chanukah story also teaches that the failure to accord equal respect in a diverse society invariably leads to conflicts not just between groups but also within them.

“This is why equal respect must always be the watchword of Canadian politics,” he said. “If we fail, our diversity will become a liability, and our freedom insecure.”

Federation unveils new allocations process

By Michael Regenstreif The Jewish Federation of Ottawa is phasing in a new allocations process over the next two years and explained the process to its beneficiary agencies in a meeting, December 2, at the Joseph and Rose Ages Family Building.

The meeting also included a presentation on emerging generations and a new interagency newsletter being launched by the Federation.

As explained by Jeff Bradshaw, the Federation’s senior director of planning, the previous allocations process involved the entire 12-member allocations committee reviewing all applications and meeting with each agency.

Under the new system, three sub-committees, each consisting of a chair plus three members, will review applications within specific funding envelopes and make recommendations to an allocations committee comprising a chair and the three sub-committee chairs.

The three sub-committees are: Strengthening Community (community, adults and seniors); Strengthening Community (children, youth and young adults); and Assisting the Vulnerable.

Bradshaw said the new application form, funding letters and evaluation reports will be harmonized and the memorandum of understanding between the Federation and beneficiary agencies, which he described as a “friction point” between the Federation and beneficiary agencies, will be eliminated. The obligations previously delineated in the memoranda will be “rolled into the application form.”

The new system, Bradshaw added, will introduce a logic model method for program evaluation that looks at programs “in terms of inputs, outputs and expected results.” The logic model, he added, is now in wide use by granting agencies for program evaluation and will be of great benefit to Ottawa’s Jewish agencies seeking funding from other sources.

The new allocations process is being used this year (2009-2010) in a pilot run by three of the Federation’s beneficiary agencies: Tamir, the Soloway Jewish Community Centre and NCSY. Agencies whose funding is up for renewal next year (2010-2011) will have the option of

using either the old or new model. Funding grants from the Federation for 2010-2011 will be for one year only so that all agencies will be harmonized into the same funding cycle for 2011-2012.

All beneficiary agencies of the Federation will be required to move to the new process for the 2011-2012 year and Federation grants will be for two years.

The new allocations process is described in detail in a handbook that can be downloaded from the Federation website at tinyurl.com/jfoallocations.

Emerging generation strategy Bradshaw said that engaging the emerging generation, the “millennial” generation – described as university-aged students from 18 to 22, new professionals from 22 to 30, professional singles from 22 to 35, and young families from 30 to 35 – has been identified as a key community priority by the Federation.

Discussing a survey of young adults conducted by the Federation in the fall of 2008, Bradshaw pointed to results indicating that large numbers of young professionals are staying or settling in Ottawa and that most reflect conventional values but are looking for new ways to become involved in the community and for “different Jewish experiences than their parents and grandparents.”

Among the challenges Bradshaw pointed out in engaging the emerging generation are a lack of secular programming in the community geared toward young adults, low rates of and high costs of organizational and synagogue affiliation, and the geographic centralization of Jewish community institutions while the population of young adults is spread throughout the city.

Newsletter Bradshaw also announced the creation of a new e-mail newsletter, to be distributed quarterly, aimed at increasing communication between Ottawa’s various Jewish agencies and organizations, and to the community, about their planned activities.

The newsletter is to be published quarterly under the auspices of the Jewish Ottawa InfoCentre.

Jewish community opens Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund In response to the devastating earthquake in Haiti, the Jewish Federation of Ottawa has opened a Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund to aid the people in Haiti who are in desperate need.

“We would like to express our deepest sympathy to the people of Haiti, and our fellow Canadians of Haitian origin, over this tremendous tragedy,” says Mitchell Bellman, president of the Jewish Federation of Ottawa. “We grieve for the families who have lost loved ones and pray for the

full recovery of all of those who are suffering and in need of immediate assistance.

“Setting up a fund is very much in keeping with the traditional Jewish concept of Tikkun Olam (repair of the world).

We sincerely hope that this will assist in relieving the human suffering experienced in Haiti.”

A school that is the pride of the Jewish community and the envy of Ottawa The recent winter break offered a reinvigorating pause for the students, teachers, administration and staff of the Ottawa Jewish Community School.

It was ushered in by the terrific Chanukah Around the World, a musical put on by students of our Hillel Academy division, to a packed gymnasium full of proud parents, grandparents and other family members.

The show was an ambitious new undertaking for our recently amalgamated school.

This school year has been filled with such initiatives.

In fact, the school itself is also an ambitious new undertaking: a merger of Hillel Academy and Yitzhak Rabin High School (YRHS) into a kindergarten-to-Grade 12 Jewish community school.

Along with the merger have come many wonderful new things: smart new uniforms for Grades 1 to 7 (next year, kindergarten and Grade 8 students will also be wearing them); new arts, music and drama programs integrated into the curriculum; a newly restructured special education department that has made our school more accessible to students with different types of learning styles; a renewed focus on professional development for our teaching staff; and many

Our strengthened commitment to trilingual education has also given our school a new informal motto, freely adapted from a recent presidential campaign: YES ... OUI ... if For those of you not as trilingual as our students, the motto is pronounced “Yes we ken,” and it is the same positive word in the three languages taught at our school.

Our new board, comprising13 members, is feeling just as positive about the future of the Ottawa Jewish Community School.

At a board retreat in November, we committed to continuing to grow a school of academic excellence that is the pride of the Jewish community and the envy of Ottawa.

Guided by a facilitated process, the board spent part of the day identifying key areas

for board focus: marketing/sales/communication; developing a short and long term financial/business plan; raising money/capital; and, developing an educational vision for the school. The board committees and ad hoc committees are hard at work developing concrete strategies for moving forward in each of these areas.

As the Ottawa Jewish Community School continues to change and grow, the support from our parents and the community is as important as ever. Recognizing that our greatest ambassadors for the school include current and past parents and students, we recently started to gather some testimonials.

Fred Seller is a dedicated board member, a current parent, and a parent of two Hillel/YRHS graduates. In a letter he crafted to students and parents he states: “We are not a

religious family. However, we are committed to Judaism and we are committed to providing a Jewish life for our children and while we liked the idea of our children continuing with their Jewish education, there was a lot more to our decision in sending our children to YRHS. The secular education was very important as was their high school environment.

“With the assistance of YRHS, our children have developed excellent study habits and an excellent work ethic. It has allowed them to overcome obstacles and certainly helped with their self-confidence. It has also served them well in the huge step from high school to university. They were encouraged to pursue their interests and study hard. The Jewish education enabled them to make informed decisions and provided them with the ability to respond intelligently when challenged about their religion and faith.”

Inspired by the vision to grow a school of academic excellence, the board continues to work closely with the administration and to collaborate with the Federation and other community stakeholders as we position ourselves for success.

True ‘Jewdaism’ or contrived Judaism?

The internecine warfare between Jew and Jew continues daily with the purported use of Halacha as a wedge to split our community, both here and in Israel. The ways of Halacha, designed to be pathways of pleasantness, have been corrupted by those who claim positions of religious power in Israel to be able to dictate non-halachic decisions that cause harm and lasting deleterious effects on the Jewish community from which people will suffer for years to come.

We have become somewhat inured to the ongoing conflict between secular and religious Jews in Israel. It serves no purpose to only castigate the secular elements in Israeli society who negate and denigrate Halacha, for their rejection of Halacha is based on values that are foreign to traditional Jewish thinking.

However, we are taken aback by the vituperative and halachically objectionable practice in certain rabbinical circles of retroactively invalidating conversions because of a lacunae of religious observance on the part of the convert, even momentarily, and because of the constitution of the court or bet din that oversaw this process of entry into the Jewish community in the first place.

It appears that the procedures prescribed in Yoreh Deah for proper conversion are overridden by a concern expressed that dictates that one’s actions, and perhaps one’s thoughts, at the time of conversion are taken into account. While it is true that Jewish law does not allow for a prospective convert to

From the pulpit Rabbi Howard Finkelstein Beit Tikvah state to the bet din that he or she is willing to follow most, but not all of the Halacha, the statement of which would invalidate the gerut, it does not declare that once the conversion is done it can be undone.

To the contrary, Halacha clearly states that, even if the convert were to return to his or her previous state of religious conscience, the conversion would remain in place.

Symbolically, Halacha definitely states that all acts of betrothal on behalf of the convert would be considered valid. While there are those rabbinic authorities who believe that a person’s state of mind at the time of conversion is to be taken into account in terms of sincerity, or lack thereof, in accepting the mitzvoth, there are others who state that one should not make a determination whether a person is Jewish or not on the basis of what was going on in the mind of the convert at the time of immersion in the mikvah.

Unfortunately, today, we are seeing a tendency that seems to reject Halacha, and to impose a new standard that is post-halachic on the grounds that, in order to save the

Torah, it must be broken. The lives of thousands of individuals who have converted sincerely through halachic procedure, and those of their descendants as well as future marriage partners, are affected.

Halachic wisdom is not determined by the ability to make Jewish law untenable and unattainable. In generations past, rabbinic genius, lacking today, was able to promote halachic integrity without compromise, and without malice. Unfortunately, today, the self-pronounced arbiters of halachic decision

making in certain circles fail to grasp the true meaning of Halacha as a means by which to unify and not to divide our people.

The desire on the part of some to have a unified halachic approach to conversions, while laudatory in principle, has been thwarted by those whose interpretation of Halacha is not in consonance with halachic norms and standards. The process of reconciliation between Jews cannot ever take place if this pathway of invalidation is allowed to continue.

The emergency in Haiti cries out for our help Haiti, the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, was struck, January 12, with a devastating earthquake. Measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale, the epicentre was close to the capital city of Port-au-Prince.

Much of the city, from the slums where so much of the population lived, to the parliament building and the Presidential Palace, were in left in rubble.

As I write, on January 15, current estimates are that 50,000 people were killed in the quake, a number that may well be higher by the time you read these words.

Hundreds of thousands more people, perhaps millions, have been left homeless.

Even René Préval, the president of the Caribbean island nation, was left homeless by the destruction.

In Canada, we have a large Haitian community that has been affected directly by the natural disaster in their homeland.

Governor General Michaëlle Jean, a Haitian-Canadian, usually the very model of coolness under pressure, was overcome with emotion when she talked with the media after the tragedy. A Jewish Community Campus employee, whom I see in my office almost every day, told me she was having a very hard time and feared for her sister whom she’d been unable to contact since the earthquake.

Editor Michael Regenstreif “I keep calling and calling,” she told me, “but I can’t get through.”

Catastrophes like the earthquake in Haiti have a way of hitting close to home.

Watching the television coverage from Haiti over the past few days, and reading the stories in the daily press and on the Internet, it’s hard for anyone not to be affected. And, to our collective credit, many governments and relief organizations mobilized quickly to help the people of Haiti.

Many charitable organizations – including Jewish organizations – have quickly mobilized emergency fundraising campaigns.

As noted on page 5 of this issue of the Bulletin, the Jewish Federation of Ottawa has established a Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund so that our community can help funnel much-needed funds to help relieve the suffering of the people in the earthquake zone.

Bellman notes, the fund “is very much in keeping with the traditional Jewish concept of Tikkun Olam (repair of the world).” The situation in Haiti is a most urgent humanitarian emergency.

by Canadians for Haitian earthquake relief. These are funds that are urgently needed by the emergency relief operations underway in Haiti.

As mentioned, many governments and relief organizations mobilized quickly in the wake of the earthquake. Of course, that includes governments and organizations from major Western countries like Canada and the United States – countries with large populations not so far removed from Haiti. Perhaps not so well known is the fact that Israel was among the first countries to respond to the emergency in Haiti.

IsraAID, the Israel Forum for International Humanitarian Aid, immediately sent a search-and-rescue team to Haiti. El Al, the Israeli government airline, sent two planes to Haiti to assist in rescue efforts and the Israel Defense Forces sent an emergency field hospital, manned by 220

Israeli soldiers and officers, including 120 doctors and nurses. Magen David Adom also assembled a team of medical personnel to work on the ground in conjunction with the American Red Cross. And the Israel Police sent a team of experts to help Haitian authorities identify victims. All this mobilization took place in the first hours and days after the earthquake.

Remarkable.

Miep Gies I’d like to note the passing of Miep Gies, January 11, at age 100. Gies was a Dutch woman who helped hide Otto Frank’s family for more than two years, providing them with food from her own rations. After the Gestapo finally found the Franks, Gies rescued the family’s photographs and the diary kept by Anne, Otto’s young daughter.

Otto was the only family member to survive the Holocaust and Gies was able to return the photos and diary to him.

The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank, published in 1952, remains one of the most important books of Holocaust literature.

Yad Vashem recognized Miep Gies as Righteous Among the Nations on March 8, 1972.

Anniversary recalls memories of the Montreal Massacre When news stories appeared last month about the 20th anniversary of the Montreal Massacre, my mind went back in time. I remembered my reactions to hearing the news about 14 women massacred at the University of Montreal’s École Polytechnique. Beside the obvious – has it really been 20 years already? – I remembered how the event touched me personally.

On December 6, 1989, I was watching television when a breaking news story announced what happened. I was holding my one-month-old son Daniel in my arms, the younger of my two sons (two years later, I had a daughter). With shock and disbelief I was transfixed to the television for hours as the coverage continued.

As we now know, Marc Lépine walked into an engineering class and separated the men and women. The men were told to leave and the women were shot. He then roamed the school’s halls looking for more women. Fourteen died and 13 were injured in the rampage before Lépine turned the rifle on himself.

A suicide letter found afterward explained his actions. He wrote that he blamed all women, and particularly feminists, for all the woes in his life. He targeted female engineering students because they fit his definition of being a feminist – women trying to succeed in a man’s world.

Reports afterward said he was anti-social, and had been rejected from joining the

Benita Siemyaticki Canadian military. He took night courses to earn marks to get into the Polytechnique’s engineering school, but never completed them.

I couldn’t help but think about his upbringing. What did he experience that could possibly make him hate women so much? What kind of parents did he have?

Was his father a woman-hater too? Was he exposed to such ideas as a child or did he devise them on his own?

The event left me with a chill for another reason too. Separating groups of people into lines because of who they were – one line lives and the other line dies. As a Jew, there was an all too painful similarity. I remember thinking, “We’ve already seen this in Europe. How could it be happening again in Canada 45 years later?” The image in my mind was indelible.

With tears streaming down my face, I knew instantly the responsibility my husband and I had. For reinforcement, I told Daniel we would raise him and his brother, Jamie, to respect everyone, regardless of

gender, race, or religion. I told him he would not hear statements in our home that bore hatred or were stereotypical toward any group. As the parents of boys, we had an additional challenge. I told him we would do our utmost to ensure that neither of them ever felt entitled to harm a woman.

I could still see myself speaking softly to this infant as if I was trying to right all the wrongs in the world through him.

Of course, Daniel doesn’t remember the one-sided conversation we had. But, over the years, when situations presented themselves, I told him and Jamie about that afternoon in front of the television. I used those discussions to convey the values we were trying to instil, and to counter the effect of the media images that surrounded them.

As far as we can tell, our sons and daughter have grown up to be decent young adults with wide circles of friends from many backgrounds. Sometimes, when they were teens, I’d hear the boys talk about girls the way many teenage boys talk about girls. Those statements were immediately challenged by me or my husband.

In 2006, in the aftermath of the Dawson College shootings, Lépine’s mother, Monique, spoke out about her son’s actions. Until then, she was reclusive, ashamed of being judged, she said. She reported that her former husband, whom she divorced when Lépine was five years old,

was emotionally and physically abusive to her and her two children. He chastised Monique when she was affectionate with the children or tried to comfort them after being hurt by their father. He believed she was spoiling them through her affection.

She said she never saw any signs in her adult son that would indicate the time bomb ticking within.

As parents, we know kids are born with their own distinct personalities. That’s how we explain how children born to the same parents with the same upbringing can have such different personalities. But, if nothing else, events such as the Montreal Massacre and other, all too similar, events point to the importance of providing a stable and loving home for children. Violence breeds more violence.

Parents must be role models, demonstrating through our actions and relationships the values of promoting character, compassion, understanding and respect toward others. None of this is a guarantee that children will grow to be well adjusted; nor do all children raised in dysfunctional homes end up being killers.

Parenthood is more than providing housing and food, not to diminish their importance. It also holds the responsibility of helping children develop into menschen.

No one says it’s an easy road.

Mailbag over backwards to appease the few strident critics ready to sacrifice Jewish security in Canada under the guise of multi-culturalism. The situation is so dire, according to MP Hedy Fry, a member of the Canadian Parliamentary Coalition to Combat AntiSemitism, that “the alarming increase in anti-Semitism is clothed in politically correct language that lashes out at the State of Israel, while singling out all Jews as targets for ire.” While all would agree that universities and colleges are where debate and new ideas should flourish, Jewish students on Canadian campuses are increasingly harassed and intimidated, and debate is replaced by diatribe under the guise of freedom of speech.

I urge the Jewish community and the Federation Board to support Jennifer Kardash in planning the next Choices event. A little controversy only stimulates excitement and will only increase attendance. We should all be proud of her accomplishments and the donations generated for the Jewish community.

The Jewish community is already familiar with the process of denying the voices of witnesses, which then leads to denial or revision of the event itself. This is exactly what is happening now regarding the Holocaust.

When we attempt to stifle testimony and views that are different from ours, we are trying to make the world conform to our preconceptions. It is important for all of us to listen and evaluate for ourselves, and not necessarily rely on authorities who seek to promote their own point of view as the only one acceptable. Since so many of us seek out those who think, look, talk and act alike, there is great danger of concluding that our own little world is the only real one.

Unfortunately, Sucharov’s column seems to imply that this generation of young female organizers is too naïve, too unschooled and too emotional to choose future speakers. Nor should Jewish morality preclude listening to an opposing point of view (if anything, our morality demands that we should). These surprisingly paternalistic attitudes are exactly opposite to what is needed to re-energize our community.

A truly civil society, which is tolerant and open, has the ability to hear different opinions without reacting with anger, fear and contempt. Sadly, there are many who are not prepared to do so, and want to suppress and repress the voices of those who disagree.

I congratulate the Choices organizers, and wish them Yasher Koach. I hope that in future years, they will deliver programs which continue to challenge us all to grow and think throughout our lives.

Choices, Brigitte Gabriel (1) I would like to extend a special thank you to Jennifer Kardash for her leadership and the women on Choices committee for a third excellent event. Jennifer’s vision of bringing Jewish women and a new generation of donors to the community has become a reality. More than 120 new participants, with more than 300 women in attendance, is a testament to the need within our community for exciting, interesting and, yes, controversial topics and speakers.

For those who reacted negatively, their political correctness will not act in our community’s favour if radical Islamists use Canada as the next target. Ms. Gabriel’s wake-up call was appropriate. Our Jewish community can no longer keep its collective head in the sand in view of the alarming increase in violent anti-Semitism, especially on university campuses.

We are certainly in a wonderful country that allows us freedom of speech. The idea of screening speakers to approve content before hiring will be daunting. Will each speaker submit their full presentation with a signed contract to adhere to their proposal?

Will there be a monitor for each guest? If so, are we not removing the right to free expression? Does this not control what we hear or learn?

We’re looking forward to another great response from the Ottawa Jewish community. For several years now, our community has been a leader in JNF Canada in terms of the money raised in relation to our size. I am confident that we will come through again in 2010 with shining colours. This year, as our Tu Bi’Shevat Telethon special project, JNF Ottawa will be planting trees around Park Be’er Sheva, a huge national park that will transform an ancient dry riverbed and its surroundings into a 1,700-acre civic paradise. In preparation for the planting of trees, JNF/KKL has already begun to clean up the very large riverbed in the centre of Be’er Sheva. It then plans to use its expertise in water rehabilitation to treat the city’s water and pipe it into this riverbed to form a 15-acre body of water that will be used for boating and recreation. Our national theme of planting trees “from generation to generation” will help the city to continue its development as one of Israel’s most thriving and growing cities – the capital of the Negev.

This year, the Telethon is once again under the capable leadership of Jane and Martin Gordon and I want to thank them for making the arrangements and undertaking the work of the Tu Bi’Shevat Telethon so well. Much of their work was done from Israel while making Aliyah, including a return visit to Ottawa for the Telethon itself. Yasher Koach indeed! Special thanks to Regional Realty for generously allowing us to use their premises once again this year and to our other Telethon sponsors. Finally, thanks and Yasher Koach to our band of excellent Telethon callers. These volunteers, many of whom have been helping us for years, generously give their time and efforts to make the annual Telethon a success.

By Diane Koven For a quarter of a century, Fuzzy Zinman Teitelbaum taught at Hillel Academy, influencing the lives and careers of many members of Ottawa’s Jewish community.

Her death, December 8, was just one more reason to mourn the passing of 2009.

“Fuzzy” might have seemed an odd name for a serious educator known to be firm, disciplined and demanding. Indeed, one might have assumed that the name’s origin was somehow esoteric. The truth, however, is revealing for its simplicity and its illustration of her wonderful sense of humour.

The late Phyllis Gursky Zinman Teitelbaum was called Fuzzy because her hair was fuzzy and, rather than finding it an insulting or unseemly nickname, she embraced it and used it throughout her life.

Rabbi Arnold Fine, who spoke at her funeral service, December 10 at Congregation Beth Shalom, first knew Fuzzy as his children’s math teacher.

According to Fuzzy’s son, David Zinman, “They fell in love and lived happily for nearly 18 years.”

Fuzzy’s two sons, Eric and David, joined Max’s three daughters, Zeeva, Jeannie and Reisa, and became one big family.

“Fuzzy took over my children and grandchildren like they were all hers,” said Max. “She was so wonderful and such a caring person ... she was an outstanding mother to her kids, an outstanding grandparent to my grandchildren.”

Although none of her immediate family had been directly affected by the Holocaust, Fuzzy was dedicated to Holocaust education. She was a past-chair of the Shoah Committee of Ottawa and was even involved in a group in Florida where she and Max spent their winters.

“Her values were very much the values her parents taught her when they came from the old country, and she adapted them to 21C life,” said Rabbi Fine.

She was a woman of valour who shall be widely missed.

Herb and Sharon Gray to be honoured by Torah Academy

By Zev Singer for Torah Academy It was 1969, and Herb Gray, a 38-year-old member of Parliament from Windsor, learned he would be promoted to cabinet. It was to be a small, private ceremony with then Governor General Roland Michener and Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau.

Now, Gray knew that, according to parliamentary tradition, first-time ministers were always given the Bible on which they took their oath.

A supply of Bibles was kept, ready to be officially inscribed. Naturally, they were all Christian Bibles. After all, in the 102 years since Confederation, there had yet to be a Jew in the federal cabinet.

His wife, Sharon SholzbergGray, got on the phone with her mother in Montreal, who then went to Rodal’s Book Store and bought a Jewish Bible – an ornamental reproduction of the 1884 Illustrated Jerusalem Bible, which the Grays still have on a shelf in their study.

He used that same holy book on each of his many subsequent cabinet swearing-in ceremonies. In 1980, when a Liberal cabinet was sworn in on TV for the first time, Canadians also found out another thing Gray

had always done when taking his oath: he wore a yarmulke.

For months after the event, Jewish Canadians approached the minister of Industry, Trade and Commerce and told him how much they were moved by what they saw on their TVs that day.

“It gave them a feeling of pride,” he says, “both in being Jewish and in being in a country where somebody like myself could serve at the highest level of government and be

recognized and recognize himself as being Jewish – and at the same time no less Canadian.”

Over the course of his career, Gray won 13 consecutive elections, representing his riding continuously for almost 40 years and holding a string of posts that culminated with deputy prime minister. Through it all, Gray always saw his work, in which he tried to help set high Canadian standards for social justice and compassion, as an applica-

tion of Jewish principles and teachings.

Sholzberg-Gray, his wife of 42 years, felt the same way about her work – even though it sometimes happened that she and her husband publicly took opposite positions on matters of policy.

A lawyer by training, the Montreal-raised woman fought for years as an advocate for health care, including a decade as president and CEO of the Canadian Healthcare Association. Since her husband often spoke for the government as its House leader, and she critiqued the government, there were days when the two were quoted in the news saying opposite things. Yet, the two have always had such mutual respect that it was never a problem.

“Herb was supportive of everything I did, just as I was of everything he always did,” she says.

Jewish ideas of equality and justice drove her throughout her career, she says, even from her early days as the first female head of McGill University’s student government, when she was involved in anti-apartheid boycotts of South Africa, and in fighting for civil rights in the U.S.

Over the years, her involvement in the Jewish community included serving as president of the Ottawa chapter of the National Council of Jewish Women and on the board of Jewish Family Services.

The couple says they are very happy to watch as their two oldest grandchildren learn in the Jewish tradition, while also getting an excellent general education, at Torah Academy of Ottawa. The school will be holding a reception in their honour on Wednesday, March 3, 7:00 pm at the Soloway Jewish Community Centre.

“The best endorsement is to find people like my granddaughters flourishing in their studies there and their development as persons,” says Gray.

“So we were honoured to be asked to be the special guests for the reception because we know the good things being done for our two oldest granddaughters. Certainly, there’s a place for Torah Academy in a city like Ottawa and we’re happy to encourage people to help support it.”

Screening for breast/ovarian cancer genes offered to Jewish women in Ontario

By Benita Siemiatycki The results of a study published in the December 2009 issue of the Journal of Clinical Oncology highlight the merits of providing screening for Jewish women to learn if they carry the BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene mutations, which can lead to breast and ovarian cancer. The study was conducted in Toronto by the Lawrence Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing and Dalla Lana School of Public Health of the University of Toronto, and the Women’s College Research Institute.

It is estimated that one in 45 Jewish women of Ashkenazi descent (originating from Eastern Europe) carries the faulty genes, compared to one in 250 in the general Caucasian population.

Sephardic women (originating from North Africa and the Middle East) are less likely to be affected than Ashkenazim.

If a woman has the BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene, she has a 20 to 40 per cent chance of developing ovarian cancer and up to an 80 per cent chance of developing breast cancer. The mutated genes can be inherited from both the maternal and paternal sides of the family. Lead study author Kelly Metcalfe says many women, and even some doctors, discount the father’s side when assessing a woman’s risk of developing the disease.

Of the 2,080 women, aged 25 to 80, who were tested in the Toronto study, 22 discovered they carried the BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutations. More than half of them inherited the faulty gene from their father’s side. Furthermore, eight firstdegree relatives of the carriers discovered they also were carriers after family members were offered testing as a follow-up.

The researchers have concluded that the numbers warrant expanding the genetic screening to include 5,000 more women. Using donated funds, Women’s College Hospital is continuing the testing for women who are Jewish (Ashkenazic or Sephardic), live in Ontario; are 20 to 70 years of age, have not had previous testing for the BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes and are willing to go to Toronto for the test.

This is a unique opportunity because current guidelines allow only women who have a strong family history of breast or ovarian cancer to undergo genetic screening, and they must be referred by a physician. In this study, women can self-refer and don’t have to have close family members who’ve been diagnosed with these cancers. Some of the women who learned they were carri-

ers were not aware of any family history.

Women who test positive can choose to have their breasts, ovaries and uterus removed surgically as a preventative measure. Alternatively, they can opt for increased cancer surveillance, or to take Tamoxifen, which cuts the affects of estrogen and reduces the risk of cancer.

Many of the women found to have the gene mutations chose to have prophylactic surgery. Two who chose against it ended up developing cancer, but it was found early.

Testing is free of charge and consists of providing a saliva sample and completing questionnaires.

OTI ethics lecture to discuss morality of war The morality of war in the Jewish tradition will be the topic for the sixth annual Adina Ben-Porat Memorial Lecture on Jewish Ethics sponsored by the Ottawa Torah Institute Yeshiva High School (OTI).

Featured speakers Rabbi Eliezer Ben-Porat, dean of OTI and Machon Sarah High School for Girls, and Aaron J. Sarna, chair of OTI, will discuss the stance of Judaic law on this most controversial subject of public policy and how Judaic thought and practice has influenced the evolution of the international laws of war.

Rabbi Ben-Porat is a noted teacher and scholar of Judaic law who has

published widely. He commanded an IDF reconnaissance unit during the 1973 Yom Kippur War. Sarna, a former Canadian government trade negotiator, is the author of Boycott and Blacklist, a 1986 book on Arab economic warfare against Israel.

Congregation Beth Shalom joins Canadian Council of Conservative Synagogues

By Diane Koven Congregation Beth Shalom is again making changes and has affiliated with the Canadian Council of Conservative Synagogues.

The Canadian Council of Conservative Synagogues was formed in 2008 by four Toronto shuls, including three that had left the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism, the main Conservative synagogue organization in North America with about 700 affiliated congre-

gations, including Ottawa’s Congregation Agudath Israel.

Beth Shalom had been independent since its dramatic 2003 decision to allow mixed, or “family,” seating in its main sanctuary.

Going to mixed seating meant that Beth Shalom could no longer be part of the Orthodox Union and prompted its then clergy to leave the synagogue. Although it was hoped the decision would attract new

families to join the synagogue, and some did, there were also some members who were displeased and left, some to form a small Orthodox minyan in the same neighbourhood.

In 2005, the congregation embarked on a major refurbishment project, hired a new rabbi and introduced new programs, all in an effort to increase membership and bring people back downtown from the suburbs. However, new members have been balanced by those who have left or died, leaving the total membership in 2009 at 340 families, more or less the same as it was in 2003.

“When the decision to move to family seating was originally taken in June, 2003, a commitment was made to revisit the concept after five years,” said Jason Moscovitz, secretary of the Beth Shalom Board of Governors and chair of the task force that studied the issue in 2008.

Although the membership was generally satisfied with the direction it had chosen, it was acknowledged that it faced an “identity problem” of sorts.

“While we may have understood what we stood for inside our four walls, it was increasingly difficult to explain it to the community, to potential new members and, perhaps most importantly, to prospective rabbi candidates,” said Moscovitz.

Ian Sherman, in his second term as president of Congregation Beth Shalom, agrees.

“We did not articulate a solid enough vision of where we saw the shul going down the road,” he said. “The re-

cent decision of the board ... is one of articulating a better vision of our shul within the Ottawa Jewish community.

We are a traditional congregation with an Orthodox liturgy, with traditional Conservative values, and we wanted to stay the course in terms of that tradition.”

The congregation has now been without a permanent rabbi for a couple of years, with Rabbi Arnold Fine, rabbi emeritus of Congregation Agudath Israel, filling in. He is pleased with the congregation’s decision and was grateful to have been consulted.

“They gave me an opportunity to speak at various meetings. My voice was heard, but my job was not to push them in one direction or another,” said Rabbi Fine.

According to Sherman, the search for a rabbi had been suspended until the decision had been made to affiliate.

“It is not easy to find a traditional Conservative rabbi who is comfortable with the Orthodox liturgy.

The pool of candidates is very small,” he said.

There are, however, several strong candidates and the first visiting rabbi was in Ottawa in mid-January.

“Affiliation with the Canadian Council of Conservative Synagogues does not change how we conduct services. What it does is provide us with a network of like-minded synagogues.

Through that network, we will be able to tap into many more resources to help us improve the many services we offer our members,” said Moscovitz.

Holocaust survivor and author Alex Levin to speak at uOttawa

By Naomi Azrieli Azrieli Foundation Holocaust survivor Alex Levin, author of Under the Yellow & Red Stars, from Series 2 of the Azrieli Series of Holocaust Survivor Memoirs, will speak at special lecture, February 10, presented by the Azrieli Foundation and the University of Ottawa’s Vered Jewish Canadian Studies Program.

The Holocaust Survivor Memoirs program was established by the Azrieli Foundation in 2005 to collect, preserve and share memoirs and diaries written by Holocaust survivors who later made their way to Canada. The program is guided by the conviction that each survivor has a remarkable story to tell, and that such stories play an important role in education about tolerance and diversity.

Intended for a broad audience, these distinctive memoirs give readers the opportunity to bear witness to the experiences of Holocaust survivors through the eyes of fellow Canadians. Print editions of the memoirs are widely available through free distribution to libraries, schools and Holocaust-education programs across

Canada, to the general public at Azrieli Foundation educational events, and in retail bookstores.

Online editions, along with information about the program and how to submit a memoir, are available at azrielifoundation.org.

To date, the program has collected 170 individual memoirs and ongoing outreach has inspired many survivors to, at last, write about their experiences. Series 1, comprising seven volumes, was launched in 2007 and has been recognized by the Independent Publisher Book Awards and the Canadian Jewish Book Awards. Resource guides for Series 1 are currently in development.

These guides will provide invaluable information to educators who teach the Holocaust. Series 2, comprising eight volumes, was launched in 2009, and Series 3 will be published in the spring of 2010.

The response to the Azrieli Series of Holocaust Survivor Memoirs from readers across the country – including librarians, educators, students and book clubs – has been tremendously positive. The program has

also received acknowledgement and support from several prominent individuals, including Nobel laureate Elie Wiesel, renowned historian and cartographer Sir Martin Gilbert, and Avner Shalev, chair of the Yad Vashem Directorate.

Levin’s lecture takes place Wednesday, February 10, 6:00-7:00 pm, at the University of Ottawa, Lamoureux Room 220, 145 JeanJacques Lussier (closest campus entrance on King Edward Avenue and Osgoode). Paid parking is available at Brooks Garage, 100 Thomas More Street.

Sara Vered to be honoured at Negev Dinner Editor’s note: This is an edited and adapted version of an article published by KKL-JNF in the Jerusalem Post (November 29, 2009).

Over the years, KKLJNF activities have been a practical implementation of the heritage of David BenGurion, one of the founding fathers of the Jewish State and Israel’s first prime minister. Ben-Gurion called for the settlement of the Negev, development of agriculture, afforestation and protection of the land – exactly what KKL-JNF does every day of the year.

This year’s JNF Negev Dinner in Ottawa will honour Sara Vered. The funds raised will go toward developing Ben-Gurion’s house in Sde Boker, where he spent his last years, and to furthering the development of the Ran Kochva Scenic Lookout in the Naftali Mountains in the North – a memorial for the helicopter pilot who was killed in the Second Lebanese War when his helicopter crashed.

Sara recently attended the government memorial ceremony marking 36 years since the passing of BenGurion. The ceremony took place in the presence of Israeli President Shimon Peres and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who emphasized the importance of developing the Negev in his remarks.

“We are here thanks to the vision of Negev development. It is here that BenGurion called to settle the Negev by personal example, but we must admit that the vision of a blossoming Negev has yet to be achieved. Much has been accomplished, but there is still a great deal to be done,” said Netanyahu.

This is the vision with which Sara identifies. Her story has been tied to that of the State since the War of Independence, when, as a young girl, she served as a signal operator for the Haganah, fighting for the Jewish people’s right to an independent state. After the war,

while studying at the Tel Aviv Teachers Seminary, she remembers occasionally seeing Ben-Gurion going for a stroll on the city streets. Sixty years have passed since then, and her contribution to preserving his heritage is her way of closing this circle.

along with her late husband, Zeev – has been a prominent figure in Ottawa’s Jewish community. Zeev was a well-known developer and was awarded prizes for his work.

“I see the Jews of Canada and Israel as integral parts of one people. Over the years, I was active in promoting ties between both communities, so that they could learn about each other’s culture and keep in touch,” Sara said.

During her visit to the site, Sara met Miri Palmach, director of the Ben-Gurion House site.

“Over 90,000 visitors come here annually, many of them students and sol-

diers,” said Palmach.

“There is no better place to learn about Ben-Gurion’s life and heritage. The guests can visit his house, view an exhibit that depicts his life and also participate in an interactive game that demonstrates how KKL-JNF implements his vision of developing the Negev. It is my hope that thanks to the contribution, we will be able to upgrade the site, integrate advanced technologies and create a new exhibition.”

Sara did not hide her feelings while visiting the site.

“I am very moved to be visiting this spot where Ben-Gurion lived. During the War of Independence, I

served in the Southern Front Headquarters and now I am back in the Negev to help develop it.”

When asked to be the Negev Dinner honouree, Sara’s first reaction was to refuse.

“I always liked doing things backstage. I didn’t want to sit there and hear everyone say how wonderful I am. I eventually was persuaded to accept the honour because I was convinced that it would provide an opportunity to tell the history of the State of Israel through my own personal story.”

Preparing for the event has become a family project spanning generations. Son Arnie Vered is chair of the organizing committee and his two brothers are helping him.

“Thanks to the family’s involvement, the grandchildren are also really excited about the event,” Sara said.

Minister of International Trade Stockwell Day, a supporter of Israel, will be the keynote speaker at the Negev Dinner, expected to attract a capacity crowd of 440 Jewish and non-Jewish guests.

Ottawa student Naomi Schwartz writes from Israel about her experience at the Hebrew University

By Naomi Schwartz I began to consider studying at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem when a representative of the Canadian Friends of Hebrew University came to speak at Yitzhak Rabin High School. A year at Hebrew University struck me as a great opportunity to continue with my studies while experiencing Israel.

Friends, who had studied at the Hebrew University before me, told me that it was a fantastic experience. So, I was thankful to be chosen as the recipient of the Canadian Friends of Hebrew University Scholarship and decided to use the scholarship for my third year university studies.

The year before I came to study I had visited Israel on a Taglit-Birthright trip. It was my first visit to Israel and it gave me the opportunity to see many of the sites in a short period of time. Though the trip was only 10 days, it left me with a strong desire to return to Israel.

I arrived in Israel early last August on my Hebrew University program’s group flight. There were only about 10 of us from Canada on the flight, though I soon learned there were many more Canadians in the program.

One of the advantages of the organized group flight was having a bus take us directly from the airport to the student dorms. As well, one of the program’s madrichim (counsellors) met us at the

airport, and assisted us in checking in to the university.

On arrival at the student dorms, we were assigned our rooms and then took a shuttle to the university campus, where we registered and received a tour.

In the first few weeks, the madrichim were very helpful and organized shopping trips and tours of Jerusalem for us.

Settling into the dorms was very easy. My roommates were also from the International Program, and having them made the adjustment to life in Israel much easier.

Ulpan (intensive Hebrew classes) started right away. In six short weeks, my Hebrew greatly improved. Ulpan was taken with students outside the Rothberg International School, and was therefore a wonderful opportunity to meet students from all over the world, some of whom I am still in close contact with.

There were four of us from North America in my Ulpan class, along with students from Europe, South America and Asia. This provided an opportunity to practise my Hebrew and to learn about other countries and cultures.

During Ulpan, the Rothberg School offered many tours around Israel, which provided a great way to see the country and to develop close ties with other Rothberg students. Among the trips were a Shabbaton in Tel-Hai, including an amazing hike

and tour of the Gamla nature reserve, mountain biking through the Judean Mountains and a Shabbaton at Kibbutz Hannaton in the North.

The Hecht Synagogue on the Hebrew University campus provides a Beit Midrash program, for those interested in studying, one-on-one, with knowledgeable tutors on topics of interest in Judaism. I took advantage of this program and was pleased to spend Yom Kippur with my tutor and her family.

After Ulpan we had a three-week break during which I was able to camp out on the Kinneret, stay in a moshav, spend some time in Tel Aviv/Jaffa, and see some of the sites of Jerusalem.

A large variety of classes are offered at the Rothberg International School. As a

major in environmental sciences, I was excited that the school had just started an environmental studies program.

I selected courses in environmental biotechnology and the Israeli water crisis, both of which provide a terrific way to learn about environmental challenges from an Israeli

perspective.

I am also continuing with Hebrew classes. Two other classes I particularly enjoy are Archaeology of Jerusalem and an academic internship.

Archaeology is not only a good way to learn about the history of Jerusalem and the Jewish people, it is also a

great way to see Jerusalem, as every other class is a field trip to the archaeological sites discussed in class.

The academic internship is an excellent way to get valuable work experience in a field of interest in Israel. A wide variety of internships are offered. Mine is at Hadassah Hospital where I assist in a research lab of the Familial Dysautonomia Centre. The internship has been a great way to learn about the work culture in Israel, specifically in research, and is a good opportunity to practise my Hebrew. With all the classes though, there is still time to travel around Israel during weekends.

This year has been one of the best experiences of my life. I am glad that I decided to spend a whole year in Israel because, after four months, I’ve realized that time passes by very quickly here and there are still many places I want to visit.

By Pamela Rosenberg for Soloway JCC The Soloway Jewish Community Centre (JCC) Aquatics Department and Woodroffe High School’s General Learning Program (GLP) have formed a partnership that benefits everyone involved.

While the students play water polo, take part in aquafit classes and learn about water safety every second Wednesday morning for two months, Soloway JCC Aquatics Manager Robin Jordan gets a class full of volunteers to help with the difficult job of opening the Soloway JCC outdoor pool in the spring.

They are enjoying the swim program and have been helping out with yard work on the Soloway JCC grounds, says Jordan.

“The goal of this program is to get them safe and comfortable around water, learn respect for water, personal safety and fitness,” says GLP teacher Jamie Hughson.

“Most of them don’t get a lot of exercise. Just getting some of the kids to get in the water is a huge success.”

The students, mostly 17 or 18 years old, enter the GLP at age 14 and can stay for a maximum of seven years. They have been spending time volunteering in the community doing such jobs as raking yards for seniors and helping with the YMCA Walkathon. They also volunteered for the United Way at an Ottawa 67’s hockey game.

In addition, the students work around the comfort zone of their high school, helping out in the daycare and cafeteria.

Hughson, who is very proud of the kids, sees himself more as a guide than a teacher. The GLP students will not receive an Ontario Secondary School Diploma and, therefore, have different measures of success.

“We are working on self esteem,” says Hughson, “working to find a connection that will serve as a beacon for their life and trying to instil a sense that they belong, that they have value, and that they can contribute to society and find a path that gets them to their niche.”

Musica Ebraica to present Songs of Happiness and Tears

By Minda Wershoff Musica Ebraica Musica Ebraica will present a musical retrospective, Songs of Happiness and Tears, that’s sure to delight.

Drawing from our choir’s eight-year repertoire of more than 150 songs, we’ll present many of our favourites, from a rousing rendition of “Hava Nagilah,” to toe-tapping Chassidic tunes and a Yiddish version of “Maple Leaf Rag.” Musica Ebraica is especially delighted and proud to debut Ottawa composer Leo Lightstone’s setting of “Psalm 23,” a tone poem that beautifully echoes the stirring biblical words.

We’ll also salute our founding conductor, David Malecki, for his talents and dedication to Musica Ebraica, a unique choir he helped inaugurate in 2001.

Israel Bonds to honour three for interfaith and pro-Israel achievements

The three, Anna-Lee Chiprout, MP James Lunney and Pastor John Raymer, are being honoured at a special Israel Bonds event for their exemplary interfaith work between Christians and Jews, and for their love and concern for the people of Israel, at the second Israel Bonds interfaith tribute dessert reception, To Build and Be Built, Thursday, January 28, 7:30 pm, at Machzikei Hadas Congregation.

“All three honourees care for Israel and want to see the nation prosper,” says Marcia Cantor, executive director of State of Israel Bonds for Ottawa and Atlantic Canada.

“They share a common bond in wanting to keep Israel alive and growing.”

Anna-Lee Chiprout is well known in the Ottawa Jewish community for her many volunteer accomplishments. She is deeply and passionately involved in building strong and meaningful relationships between Christian and Jewish communities in Ottawa, across Canada and internationally.

Chiprout is the co-Canadian representative of the Christian Allies Caucus of the Israeli Knesset, which strives to build a direct line of communication, co-operation and co-ordination between the Knesset and Christian leaders around the world.

She is the first honorary Jewish member of Aglow Women International, a trans-denominational organization of Christian women. She was nominated to serve for a second year as secretary on the executive of the Capital Region Interfaith Council, and is very active in One Free World International, a human rights organization dedicated to eradicating anti-Semitism and the persecution of Christians.

Chiprout is a past co-chair of the Federation Women’s Campaign and is currently on the State of Israel Bonds Ottawa and Atlantic Canada Cabinet.

James Lunney, the MP for NanaimoAlberni since November 2000, is currently a member of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development and Chair of the Coastal Parliamentarians. Lunney is chair of the Canada-Israel Interparliamentary Group, which strives to foster friendship, goodwill and co-operation between the parliaments of Canada and Israel. He has travelled extensively internationally and has visited Israel.

Pastor Raymer sits on the international board of directors of Watoto Child Care, which recently opened the Village of Hope in Gulu, Uganda for children and mothers of war. Pastor Raymer is actively engaged in promoting Israel. He and his wife have been to Israel three times.

The evening reception will feature a performance by singer-songwriter Ruth Fazal, whose works include the moving “Oratorio Terezin,” based on poetry by children from the Holocaust woven together with Hebrew Scripture.

Fazal has recently completed her latest symphony titled, Awakening. Her past performance in Ottawa was an emotional voyage for all. She is able to engage the audience and work with them to experience the passion of the music.

Honorary co-chairs for the event are Rabbi Reuven Bulka and David Kilgour.

Cantor says she wants Jews and Christians to get to know each other better and hopes this event will continue to keep investing in Israel Bonds in people’s minds.

“It is a double mitzvah,” she says. “You get to help Israel and get the benefit of an investment.”

Hillel Academy reflects on the many changes instituted over the past year-and-a-half

By Nicola Hamer Communications Director Ottawa Jewish Community School Hillel Academy has been reflecting on the changes of the past yearand-a-half as we gear up for our AllDay Kindergarten Open House for incoming 2010-11 students. The open house will be Thursday, February 11, at 9:00 am and 7:30 pm.

One of the most visible changes in the school is the introduction of school uniforms. It caused a fair bit of controversy and had some parents questioning the efficacy of the changes the school’s administration was putting in place. One of the more vocal parents against uniforms was Sharon Reichstein, who has children in Grades 2 and 4.

Reichstein is quite willing to admit that she and her husband, Sol, seriously considered pulling their children from Hillel last year. It wasn’t just over the uniforms, of

course. The Reichsteins were concerned that their children’s needs weren’t being met, and that, perhaps, the changes in the school were going in the wrong direction.

But the Reichsteins deeply value Jewish education, and decided to give the school one more year.

“It was absolutely the right move. I’m so happy we made the decision to stay. You can just feel the difference in the school now and my children have marvellous teachers,” she says now.

Enrolment at Hillel Academy has dropped over the past few years and the administration is working hard to create a school that meets the needs of parents in the 21st century.

Justine Sider and Alan Echenberg are two other parents who say they appreciate the changes in the school.

They have three children at Hillel, in Grades 8, 4 and 1. They both have full-time jobs and, says Sider, in past

years, her concern had been growing that the school wasn’t responsive to their demographic needs.

“It’s very important to me that my children have a Jewish education,” Sider says. “The school had to realize that families with two working parents are now the norm.”

The Sider-Echenbergs were delighted this year when the school, in conjunction with the Soloway Jewish Community Centre, set up a Friday aftercare program for early Friday closings at the school.

“It isn’t such a huge thing,” says Sider. “But it is a big help to us, and it shows that the school is aware of our needs.”

Another long-time Hillel parent is Susie Weisman. She is delighted with the uniforms, believing they have something to do with the greater sense of discipline and respect you can feel in the school.

Fortunately, she was able to correctly identify Herb Gosewich as the little boy in the front row.

After contacting Herb Gosewich for more information, we were able to identify everyone in the photo.

As exemplified by the Gosewitz/Gosewich/ Gosevitz family, genealogists should be aware that they may need to use different ways of spelling family names when conducting family history research online.

Hillel Academy was a different place when her eldest child started school. She has seen the French program go from the option of extended French starting only in Grade 6 to extended French from Grade 4 onward, as well as gym in French for everyone. Special education has gone from a single teacher to a department of five, with an early intervention reading program and enriched math and Hebrew.

Weisman is very impressed with the changes but, she says, “I’ve always thought Hillel was a great school. Even though he only started extended French at Hillel in Grade 6, my eldest transitioned easily to ex-

tended French in high school. When I went to the honours awards program at his school, virtually every Hillel graduate in his year was up there with him.”

All would agree that becoming more responsive to children’s educational needs and the requirements of education in the 21st century is very important. But what really makes Hillel special?

“It feels like a family,” says Weisman. “How many schools can you go to where everyone knows your child, and where she’ll get a hug from the principal when she comes back from a few days off?

The staff and teachers really care about my kids and that is the most important thing.”

JFS launches Ezra Campaign for emergency relief

By Geremy Miller Jewish Family Services Jewish Family Services (JFS) has launched the Ezra Campaign, the Jewish community’s emergency relief fund.

“The Ezra Campaign is not about JFS,” says Mark Zarecki, JFS executive director. “The Ezra campaign is about our fellow community members who are in distress, who do not have enough food in their cupboards, who cannot afford the cost of heating, and who cannot afford to clothe their family for the winter.

“We see people in our office that are struggling on a daily basis.

For us, the most difficult cases are those involving children,” Zarecki continued. “Very few of us can imagine making a decision between, heating our homes, feeding our children, or buying them clothes for the winter. But these are choices that members of our community experiencing financial stress are forced to make every day.”

It is important for our donors to know that 100 per cent of the monies raised from our Ezra Campaign go directly to members of the Ottawa Jewish community who are in need.

“Last year, close to $350,000 was distributed,” said Sarah Caspi, manager of the Tikvah Unit.

It is the Tikvah program that is responsible for the distribution of the funds raised by the Ezra Campaign.

Since the beginning of the current economic crisis, families with children have come to represent a significant portion of those assisted

by JFS. Each month JFS provides income support to more than 50 children and their families. This past year, an additional 100 children and their families received Passover and Rosh Hashanah holiday distributions. In 2008, the Ezra Campaign was fortunate enough to have raised enough for us to give a supplementary $5,000 at Chanukah which went directly to the children in order to make the festival of lights truly shine bright.

“Through the generosity of members of the Ottawa Jewish community, the Ezra Campaign can help ensure that each child in our community has enough food, proper shelter and a sense of stability in their lives,” Zarecki concluded. “This, in turn, can help them succeed in school, build confidence, realize their potential and show that our Jewish community cares. Help us make certain that the basics necessities are guaranteed for all children.”

brary has dedicated its Rosh Chodesh Society series of torah-study classes for women to the memory of Rivkah Holtzberg, the Chabad rebbetzin murdered with her husband, Rabbi Gavriel Holtzberg, during the 2008 terrorist attacks in Mumbai, India.

The course, Rivkah’s Tent, consists of seven monthly classes open to women of all ages and levels of education and observance and began in November at the Soloway Jewish Community Centre (JCC).

Twenty women, led by Bluma Caytak, explored the life of the biblical Rivkah through discussion of passages from the Torah.

Judith Slipacoff attended the class after seeing it advertised in the Ottawa Jewish Bulletin and was very glad she did. It was her first Rosh Chodesh Society, but will probably not be her last.

“The power of women praying and studying together is a very singular experience. I would certainly go again,” she said.

Another participant, Linda Swalsky, had attended previous courses.

“For those who want a brief introduction to various parts of the Torah, these types of classes are great,” she said.

The next class in the series, on Wednesday, February 17, 7:30 pm, at the Soloway JCC, will explore the mitzvah of Shabbat candles.

Shirlala: ‘outrageously hip Jewish music for kids.’

Shirlala to perform at Jewish Education Rocks event for preschoolers

By Pamela Rosenberg for Soloway JCC Jewish schools from across the city will converge on the Soloway Jewish Community Centre (JCC) on Sunday, March 14 for a day of learning, playing and singing at the inaugural Jewish Education Rocks.

While local Jewish schools will provide the Jewish Education part of the day, the rock part of the event will be supplied by New York-based Shira Kline, better known on the preschool rock ‘n’ roll circuit as Shirlala and her ‘outrageously hip Jewish music for kids.’

“This is an opportunity for Ottawa’s Jewish educators to come across as a united front where we all have a common goal: Jewish education for our community,” says Soloway JCC Ganon Preschool Director Jenny Shinder. “The event will showcase Jewish education options for everyone whether you are full-time, part-time, Orthodox, Reform, or Conservative.”

The idea for Jewish Education Rocks came to Shinder while she was brainstorming ideas on how she could take the Ganon Preschool’s Shabbat program to the next level and make it more meaningful for preschoolers. While looking on-line for ideas she kept coming back to Shira Kline and her unique and compelling approach to Jewish music.

“I thought what a great audience it would be if we could get all the preschoolers in the city together,” says Shinder.

With that in mind, she contacted all the Jewish school principals, the idea snowballed and what she ended up with was Jewish Education Rocks.

Joining the Ganon Preschool in putting together this unique event for two- to six-year-

olds are Hillel Academy, Ottawa Talmud Torah Afternoon School, Star of David Hebrew School, Early Beginnings Multicultural Development Centre, Ottawa Modern Jewish School, Cheder Rambam, Temple Israel Religious School, Chabad Hebrew School and Torah Academy.

“The major focus for us is outreach. We want to introduce families not involved in the community to all of the options available to them and, at the same time, get everyone enthusiastic and excited about Jewish education.”

The festivities begin at 9:30 am with preschool level, Judaic-focused activities throughout the Soloway JCC, including a sing-a-long, a mitzvah room, dramatic play, cookie decorating, crafts and much more.

Each activity will be hosted by a different school.

Each preschooler will have his or her own passport, which will be stamped as they all complete activities and journey through Jewish education. The Shirlala concert begins at 11:00. The event wraps up from noon to 1:00 pm with lunch and mingling.

There will also be face painting and loot bags full of information about all the participating schools in one convenient pamphlet.

“The day is an opportunity for participants to learn more about all of the excellent opportunities available for Jewish Education in Ottawa, all the while interacting and making connections with other families they might not otherwise cross paths with,” says Shinder.

Torah Academy’s annual auction a great success

By Rachel Gray for Torah Academy Lots of people, lots of prizes and lots and lots of chocolate! It could only have been Chocolate Chances, Torah Academy’s 12th annual Chinese auction fundraiser. More than 150 people attended the November 29 event and many more participated in the raffles by pre-ordering tickets.

For many, the chance to win the grand prize, airfare for two to Israel, was what caught their attention. But, with so many prizes to choose from, there was certainly something for everyone. Prizes – all donated by businesses and individuals – included a laptop, an iPod, jewelry, furniture, toys, housewares and food. With numerous door prizes and a small box of chocolates gifted to all participants, everyone was a winner. Running concurrently

with the raffle, was a silent auction of beautiful artwork, Judaica and other household items.

Attendees enjoyed a sumptuous salad buffet and beautifully bedecked Viennese table echoing the chocolate theme, complete with chocolate fountain, truffles and an assortment of delicious cakes. Entertainment was provided by Rabbi David Rotenberg, a regular performer on the stand-up comedy circuit.

Everyone left with their wallets a little lighter, their waistbands a little tighter, their arms a little fuller with their winnings, and their hearts a little fuller too, knowing they had helped support Jewish education in Ottawa.

Jewish Girls Don’t Kayak coming to SJCC

By Pamela Rosenberg for Soloway JCC In her one-woman comedy, Jewish Girls Don’t Kayak, playwright and performer Robyn Israel retells her experience wading through stereotypes, culture clashing and racism while addressing what it’s like to date outside the faith, to be Jewish in London, Ontario, and, most importantly, why Jewish girls are told they cannot kayak.

Jewish Girls Don’t Kayak takes centre stage at the Soloway Jewish Community Centre (JCC) Saturday, February 6, 8:00 pm. It is a hysterical and honest look at the

life of an unconventional person who embraces other cultures while still trying to maintain her Jewish identity.

Playing dozens of characters, including her immigrant grandfather, her mother and her Buddhist boyfriend, Israel weaves a touching and inspiring tale about the power of the name ‘Israel’ and its impact on three generations.

The comedy made its debut at London, Ontario’s Fringe Festival and won the 2007 Brickenden Award for Outstanding Comedy. The Brickendens celebrate excellence in independent theatre in London and were created

in recognition of the continued burgeoning of new and non-mainstream theatre groups in that city since the mid-1990s.

In 2009, Israel remounted the show at London’s Arts Project where she expanded it into a full-length production under the direction of Peter Busby. In addition to Ottawa, she is bringing the show to Toronto, Hamilton, St. Mary’s and New York City.

Israel is also an arts and entertainment journalist and teaches journalism and improvisational theatre at the University of Western Ontario.

High school fraternity brothers reunite 60 years later to celebrate 75th birthdays

By Sol Shinder About 60 years ago, two groups of Jewish teenagers, one from Lowertown and Sandy Hill, and the other from the West End area of Ruskin Street and Island Park Drive, joined together to become Ottawa’s charter members of Upsilon Lambda Phi, commonly knows as the ULPs, a fraternity for Jewish high school students. It was the start of many lifelong friendships.

This past summer, two members of the ULPs, Alfred Friedman and Sol Shinder, were reminiscing as they approached their 75th birthdays and talked about trying to get some of the old gang together for a reunion.

They enlisted the help of Arnell Goldberg and Marty Saslove, made a list of the original group, and cobbled together contact information. Of the list of 16, half still live in Ottawa. The next challenge was to see if the others felt that a reunion would be a worthwhile endeavour. Remarkably, all agreed that we should proceed.

After a number of attempts, we found a date, Sunday, September 13, that worked for most on the list.

Ottawa-based organizers Alfred Friedman, Arnell Goldberg, Marty Saslove and Sol Shinder sent invitations to the four others – Irving Gencher, Harvey Glatt, Stan Hock and Jacie Levinson – still living in Ottawa, and to the eight who’ve moved away over the years: Norman Beiles, Percy Brill, Arnold Gosewich, Norman Kert, Sam Klaman, Paul Rosman, Howard Shaffer and Lyon Wexler.

Remarkably, all were able to come, except Paul Rosman, who was celebrating the birth of a granddaughter in Cincinnati, and Jacie Levinson, who had a healthrelated issue. Equally astonishing was that, after all these years, we had lost only two of the original group: Lorry Greenberg and Jerry Abrams.

When they heard about the reunion, three of the girls – now ladies – we grew up with, Shirley Strean-Hartman (née Klaman), Suzanne Cohen (née Kert) and Dorothy Nadolny (née Arron) invited themselves. We also invited Carole Greenberg, Lorry’s widow, and Sandra Levinson, Jacie’s wife.

ners, took place in a private room at the Rideau View Golf and Country Club on a lovely late-summer evening. The theme was “75” because each of the original group had recently passed or was approaching that milestone birthday.

Marty Saslove found some old photos and we all gathered around to recall our youthful looks.

Everyone looked astonishingly well and was very excited to be there. Many of the friendships had survived the passage of time, others were re-established, some after a hiatus of more than 50 years, so there was a lot of catching up to do.

Arnold Gosewich, Harvey Glatt and Stan Hock attended Clarkson University in Canton, N.Y. Arnold and Harvey went on to found the Treble Clef record stores, after which Harvey created radio station CHEZ and Arnold moved to Toronto to launch a career in the record and publishing industries.

Stan Hock went into the men’s clothing business with his dad.

Howard Shaffer moved to Montreal and wound up in the furniture manufacturing business. Percy Brill pursued an academic career as a professor of mathematics at Windsor University.

Norman Kert moved to Toronto and started a successful advertising business. Norman Beiles settled in

Montreal and became a chartered accountant.

Irving Gencher remained in Ottawa where he was in the novelty sales business. Marty Saslove also stayed in Ottawa and owned Beechwood Steel, a successful steel fabricating plant.

Sam Klaman lives on the outskirts of Toronto and had a successful career in real estate. Paul Rosman went to McGill and then settled in Boston where he became a leading pediatric neurologist.

Alfred Friedman went on to the Wharton School of Business at the

University of Pennsylvania before returning to Ottawa where he operated a number of restaurants.

Arnell Goldberg, Sol Shinder and Lyon Wexler attended Osgoode Hall Law School in Toronto. Lyon stayed in Toronto and is in-house counsel to a large international development company. Arnell and Sol returned to Ottawa and practised law together for 35 years, following which Sol left to enter the real estate brokerage business.

Jacie Levinson spent a few years in the secondary materials (junk) business before launching his flourishing real estate business, Levinson-Viner, now CLV. The late Lorry Greenberg went on to become Ottawa’s first Jewish mayor.

A cocktail hour allowed everyone to mingle and take pictures.

Then, at dinner, after each course was served, couples moved to another table so all had an opportunity to sit with everyone else. During dinner, members rose to tell favourite anecdotes from the past.

We indulged in a delicious 75thbirthday cake inscribed with all of our names.

It was a great evening and everyone agreed there should be a repeat – but that we should not wait so long to do it again.

Passionate educator enthralls teachers and students

By Neshi Rodin for Jewish Youth Library Rabbi Zalman Markowitz of Monsey New York, a passionate and inspired speaker and educator, enthralled educators and students during a whirlwind visit to Ottawa, November 18.

Brought in by the Jewish Youth Library of Ottawa, Rabbi Markowitz swiftly and easily captured the attention of his audiences with anecdotes and stories drawn from his many years in the teaching profession.

Among the groups that Rabbi Markowitz addressed were students of Hillel Academy, Rambam Day School and Torah High. His evening schedule included a dinner seminar for educators, Bringing Out the Potential of Each Student, at the Soloway Jewish Community Centre; a presentation, How to Like the People You Love, at the Jewish Youth Library; and a classic Chassidic farbrengen at the home of Joseph and Devora Caytak.

Rabbi Markowitz’s vision of the quintessential educator is based on cutting edge educational concepts combined with the ageold wisdom of the Torah and flavoured with a deep love and appreciation for the basic humanity of each student.

An example drawn from one of the sessions gives a taste of Rabbi Markowitz’s

approach. A questioner asked him for suggestions on how to work with a student who was disinterested in his studies. The teacher wanted to bring the student to an eagerness, desire and understanding of the importance of learning. The rabbi responded by first expressing his appreciation of the question, a tactic that at once established a connection of caring between him and the questioner, and then emphasized there was a crucial distinction to be made between a student who was simply uninterested, and a student who was, in fact, hostile to learning, two different scenarios requiring two different ways of working.

In the case of a hostile child, Rabbi Markowitz said the educator needed to take into consideration both his responsibility to the individual child and to the rest of the class. He said the basic prerequisite to being able to teach a child anything was the need to establish a solid connection with the child. This was accomplished by having a deep love and appreciation of the humanity of the child, seeing him or her as a human being, rather than being merely as a student, which could lead to the definition of a child as a “good” or “bad” student, rather than as an holistic human being.

Congregation Beit Tikvah contest to determine Ottawa’s best cholent

By Lynne Cohen for Congregation Beit Tikvah How often do you sit around at Shabbos lunch and discuss who makes the best cholent in town? It is a frequent and heated debate at our Shabbos table. But, very soon, we won’t have to argue and guess. Congregation Beit Tikvah of Ottawa (CBTO) is going to provide the decisive answer.

CBTO’s First Annual Cholent CookOff is being held next month and the entire Ottawa Jewish community has the chance to participate.

How does it work?

“There are two ways to participate: as a cook or as a taster,” explains Aviva Rotenberg, creator and organizer of the cook-off.

“Cooks should go to cbto.org to read the contest rules and fill out an entry

form. This must be submitted to the synagogue with payment. Entry spots are limited to 20 and will be confirmed on a first-come, first-serve basis.”

Each contestant must pay $36, which includes a brand new crock pot, says Rotenberg, adding that “the cookware can be taken home after the judging or donated to the shul for next year’s cookoff.”

On Thursday, February 11, in the evening, contestants will bring their new, sealed, ingredients to Beit Tikvah where they will be checked by a mashgiach and then left in the shul kitchen.

Potatoes and onions are to be provided.

On Saturday night, all entrants will come back to Beit Tikvah to make their cholents and set them to cook.

The finale of the event will take place at lunch time on Sunday, February

14, when the community will join together to sample all the creations and weigh in on which is their favourite.

The cost for tasting everything is only $10.

“So come hungry!” says Rotenberg.

Two kinds of prizes are to be awarded: one for the fan favourite as voted by the community, and the grand prize, which will be determined by a panel of celebrity judges.

“The most important prize is bragging rights for the entire year. Other prizes are top secret at the moment,” notes Rotenberg.

“I know a lot of people claim their cholent is absolutely the best,” she says.

“We thought we’d put it to the test. We really hope everyone will come out at least for the tasting part. It promises to be delicious.”

JYL launches patrons campaign

And the sounds of children singing Jewish songs and teachers reading storybooks fill the library as Mazeltots, JYL’s Sunday morning program for youngsters up to age four, runs for yet another wonderful week.

and director of the library, recently launched a fundraising campaign asking Jewish families to become Patrons of the Library by pledging $18 per month. These donations will allow JYL to continue offering the latest Jewish books, as well as such fun, educational and important programs to Jewish children and adults as Mazeltots; the Friendship Circle, a service offered to parents with physically or intellectually challenged children; and many lectures, classes and cultural events.

tion is eligible for a charitable tax receipt, the actual outof-pocket cost for each participating family is about $12 per month; and the donation includes a free family membership to the library.

Matt Wilbur, his wife, Dina Schneider, and their sons, Jonah and Ariel, have been active members of JYL since Jonah began attending the Westboro Jewish Montessori Preschool, located inside the library.

“The name, Jewish Youth Library, is a real misnomer,” says Wilbur, “because there are also thousands of books

on philosophy, history and even cooking! The library has become a real focal point in our lives. Our son attends school and camp there, and both my wife and I have taken advantage of the Hebrew and religious programs.”

Wilbur admits that, as a Jew belonging to a Reform synagogue, he was, at first, quite hesitant to even enter the library since it was run by religious volunteers.

“But now,” he says, “I realize that my fears were entirely unfounded, and the staff have welcomed us like family and encouraged us to become active participants in the day-to-day activities within the library. Everyone has been extremely supportive of our family values and has made learning yiddishkeit a fun and relaxing activity.”

Amid the children’s books, the adult books, the Hebrew programs, the lectures, the women’s and men’s classes, and the constant smell of fresh-baked challah, you’re all but guaranteed to fall in love with the tiny building at the heart of Westboro’s Jewish community.

New Year’s resolutions: from flossing to phlossing Happy 2010! May I be so bold as to ask how your New Year’s resolutions are faring? I wasn’t too worried about making resolutions this year, as the single resolution I have made regularly since I was 14 is one I have finally conquered. Any guesses?

Flossing, of course, is the epitome of many resolutions. It’s an act of self-sacrifice in the service of physical good. In the spirit of Ulysses and the sirens, it’s what philosopher Jon Elster calls “self-binding”: harnessing our hedonistic desires for rational ends.

While stating on December 31 that you’re going to floss regularly is hardly tying yourself to the mast today to resist temptation tomorrow (though with all that unused floss, you probably could), the act of stating the intention in the form of a socially sanctioned custom like a New Year’s resolution is supposed to help keep you on track.

But do personal resolutions always have to be about fortitude and temperance? What about resolutions promising indulgence? Rather than the dental-floss type of resolution, we can think of these as the candy floss kind. I resolve to relax, have more fun, enjoy life, and so on.

I’m reminded of the phrase “being good to one’s self,” words I’ve long puzzled over. For some, this means going to the spa and eating chocolate truffles. For others, it means dragging oneself to the gym and shedding the pounds that have come from eating too many of those truffles. I think we can say that being good to oneself ultimately means balance: engaging in meaningful work, cultivating emotional intimacy, sleeping and exercising, and even eating wholesomely but also to satisfaction so as to stave off trips to the vending ma-

chine in a fit of sudden hunger.

Then there’s another kind of resolution: the kind made of philosophical floss, or what we can call phloss for short. These are farther-reaching and less specific. I resolve to be in the moment, less bound by materialism, more spiritually evolved, and so on. By encouraging mindfulness, phlossy resolutions make dental floss more endurable and candy floss more enjoyable.

Among the friends and acquaintances I informally polled for this piece, one said that resolutions aren’t worth the inevitable “disappointment.” This is an intriguing notion. Who, exactly, is disappointing whom?

The “multiple selves” idea that psychologist Paul Bloom discussed The Atlantic (November 2008) explains this. We all struggle with balancing interests with desires. Consider the proverbial mother who goes to sleep without making her kids’ lunches. The morning mother curses the evening mother as she scrambles to get her kids to the school bus, lunchboxes in hand. (Confession: you’re currently reading the musings of that proverbial mother.)

Others I asked were more pragmatic, setting “smart goals” that fit with their own needs and interests, goals that can be changed as circumstances require. These kinds of resolutions are exemplified by blogger-turned-author Julie Powell’s selfset task to cook every one of Julia Child’s 524 cookbook recipes in 365 days, a journey depicted in the recent film Julie and Julia. My husband has become smitten with the idea of Julia’s beef bourguignon, and the aromas of his virgin attempt are wafting toward my laptop as I type this. I wouldn’t dare ask how often he hopes to break the monotony of our daily meal routine by trying his hand at a Julia recipe. It goes without say-

Values, Ethics, Community Mira Sucharov ing that resolutions should be personally generated – neither imposed by a parent nor suggested by a spouse.

Of course, given that we’ve begun a new decade, one could make a set of 10-year resolutions that, given the longer time frame, might be easier to achieve. Plenty of time to get the hang of flossing, enough sweet confections to keep you buoyant through the years, and an attempt at some transcendental moments – perhaps twice yearly: once during winter’s Tu B’Shevat (communing with nature, perhaps?) and another during summer’s Tu B’Av, the Jewish valentine’s day (communing with each other).

But this presents its own problem. John Tierny reported in the New York Times last month about the universal pleasureprocrastination tendency. We delay doing something – like redeeming a gift certificate – thinking we’ll have more time in the future. I repeatedly save my favourite clothes for some better occasion. One day I may get invited to lunch with the queen, but, until then, I should wear them before the moths target them for lunch.

Postscript: Do your dental floss resolutions repeatedly fail?

My secret is the elaborately flavoured flosses now on the market that make your mouth feel like it’s on the set of an old Juicy Fruit commercial. Because of these marvellous packages of modern commercialism I am now so addicted to flossing that, next year, I might just have to resolve to, well, cut down.

NGOs must be accountable for their actions I was struck by press reports from Copenhagen that groups such as Climate Justice Action were promoting demonstrations amounting to “mass civil disobedience” at the UN Climate Change Conference 2009. NGOs (non-governmental organizations), and there seem to be a lot of them with enough money to go to Copenhagen (not to mention the resulting environmental footprint), complained that 15,000 delegates had been effectively “locked out” of the summit due to being refused accreditation. The 193 countries’ representatives were dwarfed by the sheer numbers of the 15,000 disenfranchised NGO delegates unable to voice their opinions at the table. Here in Ottawa, Greenpeace demonstrators were literally climbing the walls of Parliament advocating government action on climate change.

There has been significant growth in NGOs since the 1990s, mainly in the developed and democratic world. While some say policy and action advocacy is the new democracy, others regard it as a false prophet causing chaos in governance, particularly in international development. Interestingly, the impact of almost all these advocacies and advocates is on the free world, where they raise funds under highly liberal laws. They are for the most part ignored in the developing, autocratic, or dictatorship nations, allowing for some exceptions in the areas of humanitarian and food aid.

Today, NGOs develop and influence public policy on a plethora of topics: the environment, human rights, the war in Afghanistan and, yes, Israel. In that respect, Oxfam, a wellknown aid NGO that does a lot of significant outreach and advocacy around the world, has gone outside its aid mandate to use public policy advocacy, including boycotts, to promote an anti-Israeli agenda. The most memorable Oxfam anti-Israel endeavour was its Belgian affiliate’s 2002 slogan, “Israeli fruit tastes bitter” on a poster. When it comes to human rights, NGOs have a dual standard. They hold countries like Israel, Canada or the United States to one standard, while ignoring and being ignored by the likes of Hezbollah, Iran, North Korea, China, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, etc.

When the Sudanese government representative became an overnight champion of poorer nations at the Copenhagen Conference, did the environmental NGOs conduct an indepth investigation of Sudan’s human rights abuses in Darfur, or its environmental record, before throwing their support behind the Sudanese delegate who led in blocking procedural negotiations? Sudan’s new found “climate justice” is a tool that embraces mutual exploitation between a handful of environmental NGOs and a dictatorship with a bloody record.

The evolution of grassroots and community-based organizations into multibillion dollar NGOs that have an impact on civil society and democracy has fundamentally changed the relationship between governments, citizens, the media and interest groups. Governments are responsible to represent their entire constituency and to operate in a multi-issue environment. NGOs represent the views of a few and usually deal only with a single issue. While democratically elected governments operate in a transparent and accountable en-

vironment, NGOs are answerable only to their funders and interest groups.

The other side to the minimalist state is an exponential increase in non-governmental organizations, which has led development theorist Geoff Wood to compare the phenomenon to “franchising the state.” Countries and organizations like the UN contract NGOs to deliver services, minimizing their own role. While there is a definite need for NGOs, national and global mechanisms to render NGOs more accountable to all citizens are missing. The question is: how do we make NGOs accountable for their activities, behaviours and undertakings? How do we establish corporate accountability and measurement for NGOs and monitor and measure national and global consequences of their direct or indirect actions?

We could start with organizations that engage NGOs: various government organizations, the United Nations and international financial institutions. In this context, NGOs should be accountable and their performance measured based on decisions made and policies developed. Governments need to be accountable to their own citizens rather than to the NGOs. NGOs seem to be running amok and governments and international governmental organizations should not encourage or support this.

In the NGO-saturated world, citizens will have to add yet another perspective to their decision-making process when they exercise their democratic rights. They will need to understand NGO influences and lobbying on candidates, parties or governments. Governments will have to integrate further transparencies, building accountability into the processes by which they absorb special interest advocacy policy advice.

Accountability and transparency will not come from the special interest groups that comprise the civil society – it can only come from governments that take the time to do their own research and make up their own minds on behalf of their citizens.

Did you know about the Cyberknife?

Fresh from his successful shepherding of the Cancer Survivor’s Park, Chuck Merovitz is part of a team of lawyers trying to raise $2.5 million to bring the Cyberknife to Ottawa. The device, a state of the art surgeon’s tool that destroys cancerous tumours using targeted radiation, can reach places a scalpel cannot.

In anticipation of the launch of new radio stations in Ottawa in 2010, CFRA cancelled the popular Sunday radio shows hosted by Rabbi Reuven Bulka and Gerry Cammy.

“Fifteen years is a long time. It wakens you up to the idea that nothing is forever,” said Rabbi Bulka in an Ottawa Citizen article about the cancellation.

Rabbi Bulka, however, got a reprieve. His show is back on the air – for now.

And last, but certainly not least, there were smiles galore on Christmas Day, when Anna Silverman and son Josh delivered puppies to seven Ottawa families on behalf of the Ottawa Humane Society.

Speaking of smiling faces in the newspaper, both Josie Finestone and Golda Feig were featured in Shepherd’s fall advertising campaign, which showcased chic and funky local woman who shop at the ladies’ clothing store.

Rob Krantzberg, better known as Rob the Shoeman, was invited to speak at Grade 10 Career Day at Canterbury High School. For two hours, he delighted the class with anecdotes about the parents, children and unusual characters he has encountered during his many years as owner of Kiddie Kobbler shoe store on St. Laurent Boulevard.

Talk about a great party. Ellen Cherney celebrated her birthday with friends Rhonda and Richard Waserman at their inn on the island of Eleuthera in the Bahamas. As if hanging out on a beautiful Caribbean island is not gift enough, the guy playing bongos at Ellen’s birthday bash was none other than musician Lenny Kravitz. The rocker, who has a home on the island, is a regular at the Wasermans’ Rainbow Inn. Ron Weiss’s docweissband performs again Saturday, January 30, at Irene’s Pub, 885 Bank. The show starts at 9:45 pm and there is a $10 cover charge per person with all proceeds going to selected charities. Special guests are the Gospel Jewish Wedding Crashers.

In my December column, I talked about people from the community who were carrying the Olympic torch or who had a connection to the 2010 Olympics.

There are a few others I’ve since learned of. Former Ottawan Daniel Alvo will be a torch bearer in February in Abbotsford, B.C. Ben Resnick, who has the amazing job of being part of the team driving the torch across Canada, was asked at the last minute to carry the torch in Ottawa on December 12.

Paul Shore, who grew up in Ottawa and now lives in Whistler, B.C., co-authored a children’s book with his wife, Talya. Bobsleigh Jellybeans is the true story of four friends who formed a bobsleigh team and hope to quality for the Olympics. Proceeds from sales of the book support the athletes in their Olympic quest.

Successful events mark Chanukah on campus Editor’s note: This issue marks the introduction of our new student columnist, Justin Dahan, a communications major at the University of Ottawa. The Campus Life column will appear monthly during the school year.

Universities close their doors for Christmas so that students can spend the holidays at home. Jewish students, though, are not afforded that luxury for our holidays and Chanukah happened to fall this year during the exam period. Jews had to balance the books and lighting the menorah.

Despite the obvious hurdles of getting students to attend events at exam time, Jewish groups went above and beyond to represent the holiday on campus.

One of the events was Chanukah at Tabaret at the University of Ottawa (uOttawa), co-sponsored by the Chabad Student Network (CSN) and a Jewish fraternity, Alpha Epsilon Pi (AEPi). A large room in Tabaret Hall was rented for a candle lighting. Rabbi Chaim Boyarsky of CSN furnished a buffet of latkes, doughnuts and vegetables with dip.

Aside from the candle lighting, which was done on a huge menorah in front of a large crowd of students who also had the daunting task of prepping for exams, and members of the Jewish community, there were also a number of speeches. Both Rabbi Boyarsky and his wife, Yocheved, captivated the audience with inspiring speeches. Other speakers included Jen Hadad, student president of Hillel at

uOttawa; Adam Berktin, student president of CSN; and Dave Davis, president of the Jewish Law Students Association.

The big speaker was Allan Rock, president of uOttawa, who was introduced by Jason Friedman and Zach Cantor, president and vice-president of AEPi. Rock is a powerful ally to the Jewish community on campus. Having him on our side in an age when Israel Apartheid Week has become a major event on many campuses is a major boost to us.

After the event, AEPi president Jason Friedman spoke about its importance.

“The event was able to bring everyone together. Even during exams, so many people of all different Jewish backgrounds came out. AEPi takes pride in bringing Jews together no matter the type of background. The AEPi brothers

themselves take pride in our own unity through diversity and this event was able to show the rest of the community exactly that fact.”

The other big Chanukah event was Hillel Ottawa’s Light Out the Night, a party with a casino theme. Jewish students gambled with play chips in order to win raffle tickets for various prizes. The event brought out a plethora of Jewish students.

“Students had a great time,” said Alana Kayfetz, executive director of Hillel Ottawa. “We were so happy with the large turn out during a busy exam season. Hillel Ottawa, the Foundation for Jewish Campus Life is pleased to be able to offer excellent programs for Jewish university students living in Ottawa.”

Overall, Chanukah was well represented on campus. Despite the busy exam schedule, Jewish students from both Carleton University and uOttawa showed up in numbers to create a great atmosphere for the two very successful events.

For students who come from places outside Ottawa, these types of events provide a home away from home.

Since some of these students have never had to spend Chanukah away from their families, events like this are very important and helpful to Jewish students. They also create strong bonds between the Jewish groups on campus and the students who attend their events.

Be true to yourself I have been writing this column for seven years now. As I sit down to begin writing the first column of my eighth year, I am still amazed that I can find new things to write about. However, I seem to have a skill for rambling! So here goes ramble #134.

One of the many things I love about my husband is that he is a very simple man. (And I mean that in the best possible way, Rog!) What you see is what you get. There are no false pretences with him.

When we first got together, we would spend a lot of our free time lying on the couch, in front of a fire, reading. I’d read fiction or food porn; he’d read the newspapers that had piled up all week. When we’d take a holiday together, we’d go somewhere warm, find a shady spot on the beach and read all day.

We were quite happy doing this. However, at some point in

every relationship, you start to look around at others and see how they do things. We had several friends who took adventure holidays, days packed with hiking and biking.

When I suggested we maybe look into one of these types of vacations, he just looked at me and said, “Let’s not pretend to be who we’re not.”

I remind myself of this little nugget of advice every winter.

As the pretty white snow of December turns to the ugly gray slush of January and February, I get more and more despondent. I keep reading that the best way to get through the winter with a smile on your face is to get involved in some sort of winter sport. I tried downhill skiing twice and realized that, if I wanted to make it through the winter with all my bones whole, this was not the sport for me. I tried crosscountry skiing for a few weeks and got tired of being left behind in my friend Donna’s powder. I have gone skating a few times. But, truthfully, I just hate being outside in the winter. It’s not who I am and I accept that fact.

Roger’s advice, to be true to yourself, can also be applied

Spicy Lentil Chicken Soup Chock full of carrots, parsnips and lentils, this hearty soup shouts “winter!” It makes a huge pot, but leftovers freeze beautifully. And who doesn’t love pulling a container of hearty soup out of the freezer on days you just can’t face cooking? This recipe is adapted from one I found in the January 2010 edition of Bon Appétit. That recipe called for spicy Italian sausage. I decided to substitute diced boneless chicken thighs and added red pepper flakes for some heat.

2 tablespoons olive oil 1 pound boneless skinless chicken thighs, diced into 1/2 inch pieces 1 large onion, diced into 1/4 inch pieces 2 large carrots, peeled and chopped 2 large parsnips, peeled and chopped 2 large celery stalks, chopped 2 1/2 teaspoons dried Italian seasoning blend 1/4 -1/2 teaspoon dried red pepper flakes 1 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon black pepper 1 pound brown lentils (about 2 1/3 cups) 12 cups vegetable or chicken broth 5 ounce box of fresh baby spinach leaves Heat oil in a large pot over medium-high heat. Add diced chicken and cook until browned, stirring occasionally, about 5 minutes. Using a slotted spoon, transfer chicken to a bowl and set aside. Leave oil in pot.

Add onions, carrots, parsnips, celery, Italian seasoning, red pepper flakes, salt and pepper. Cook on medium heat, for about 7-8 minutes, stirring often, until onions turn translucent and vegetables begin to soften. Add lentils and stir well. Add broth and simmer on low heat for about 20 minutes, until lentils are tender. You may need to add a bit of water or more stock if soup is getting too thick for your liking.

Add chicken to soup and simmer until vegetables are tender and flavours blend, about an additional 10 minutes.

Season with additional salt and pepper, if desired.

Add spinach and cook for 2-3 minutes, until spinach wilts.

Chicken Paillards with Clementine Salsa I found this recipe in the December 2009 issue of Bon Appétit. I loved the idea of using the quintessential winter fruit, clementine, in a salsa! A chicken paillard is just a chicken breast, pounded thinly and then quickly sautéed.

Serrano chiles are hotter than jalapeño peppers. If you like less heat, go with the jalapeño pepper.

4 chicken breast halves (each about 5-6 ounces) 4 clementines, peeled, diced (about 1 cup) 1 cup cherry or grape tomatoes, quartered 1/2 cup finely diced red onion 1/2 cup finely diced celery 1/4 cup coarsely chopped fresh basil 1/4 cup coarsely chopped fresh cilantro 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice 1 Serrano chile or jalapeño pepper, seeded, minced 2 tablespoons olive oil 1/2 cup fresh clementine juice (from about 6 clementines) Place chicken breast halves between 2 sheets of plastic wrap or parchment paper, spacing apart. Using mallet, pound chicken to 1/4-inch thickness. This step can be done 1 day ahead. Cover and chill.

Mix clementines and next 8 ingredients in medium bowl. Season with salt and pepper. Salsa can be made 2 hours ahead. Cover; let stand at room temperature.

Uncover chicken; sprinkle with salt and pepper. Heat olive oil in large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat.

Add chicken and cook until slightly browned and cooked through, about 3 minutes per side. Transfer chicken to platter. Add clementine juice to skillet; boil until reduced to 1/4 cup, stirring often, about 2 minutes. Drizzle sauce over chicken. Spoon salsa over and serve.

Historical novel brings legend to life Clay Man: The Golem of Prague A Retelling by Irene N. Watts Illustrated by Kathryn E. Shoemaker Tundra Books 84 pages. Ages 9 and up.

According to Jewish legend, the Golem was a large, super-strong being who looked like a man. It was supposedly created from clay by Rabbi Judah Loew (1525-1609) when he was chief rabbi of Prague to protect the Jews from their enemies, especially those who, as Passover approached, sought to prove the blood libel, the notion that the blood of a Christian child was used to make matzos.

What is ironic about this legend and its popularity is that Rabbi Judah Loew was known to abhor magic. Moreover, according to the Encyclopedia Judaica, scholars are of two minds about whether he was or was not a Kabbalist. Some scholars think he was. Others say no.

Nevertheless, Rabbi Judah Loew, a renowned Talmudist, moralist and mathematician, is forever linked with the clay man. Some might think, if given the chance, he would have objected to that. I’m not so sure. He was a major proponent and interpreter of Aggadah – Jewish legends – and frequently quoted passages from legends as an introduction to his Talmudic and moral writings.

In the more than 20 years that I have been writing this column, I have reviewed several picture books based on the folklore about the Golem of Prague, but Irene N. Watts’ Clay Man is the first historic novel to come my way on the theme.

Set in 1595 within Prague’s walled Jewish ghetto, Clay Man is a lyrically written, powerful and gripping novel.

Told from the perspective of Jacob, Rabbi Loew’s fictional youngest son, in 14 short, skillfully paced and structured chapters, the novel brings the story to life by emphasizing personalities and relationships.

Jacob is almost 10 years old for most of the story and almost 13 during its last chapter.

Among his many frustrations are that he must remain within the walls of the Jewish quarter, that he is often compared to his older brother, that he frequently gets in trouble at cheder, that he dislikes his household duties and that he is afraid of disappointing his father. Additionally, he doesn’t seem to have any friends.

Passover is just around the corner and the elders of the Jewish community seek Rabbi Loew’s help. They are wor-

by Jacob, the rabbi and two helpers leave the ghetto in the dead of night and proceed to the river bank where something mystical occurs. Three men leave the ghetto. Four return.

The fourth man is the equivalent of every child’s boogeyman. In this case, though, it’s a boogeyman that will protect the Jews. He is introduced as Josef, Rabbi Loew’s huge, strong house guest who can’t speak, can’t feel, has no soul and, above all, must only receive instructions from the rabbi.

That Josef occasionally takes instructions from other people allows the author to introduce needed humour in what is, essentially, a serious, dramatic story. It also lends credibility to Josef’s personal crisis, three years later, that leads to his mystical undoing.

Jacob looks upon Josef as a friend and, until the end, has a hard time believing his father knows Josef better than he does. But, when Josef almost kills him, Jacob realizes there is much more to Josef than he ever imagined. Shortly after, Jacob also realizes his father knows him better than he imagined as well.

Hauntingly depicted by Katherine E. Shoemaker’s heavily shaded black and white illustrations, Clay Man builds on the Golem legend, bringing it to life with clarity, wit and sensitivity. Berman applies economic theory to explain religious terrorism Radical, Religious and Violent: The New Economics of Terrorism

By Eli Berman MIT Press 300 pages Why are religious terrorist organizations so adept at killing?

Eli Berman is an economist at the University of California San Diego – originally from Ottawa, he attended Hillel Academy – who tackles this question through the lens of economic rationality in Radical, Religious and Violent: The New Economics of Terrorism.

In the spirit of Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner’s Freakonomics books – applying economic logic to non-material realms – Berman concludes that religious terrorism gets its moorings less from theological fanaticism than from the ability of religious communities to attract and retain adherents. By instituting elaborate social and educational codes that serve to isolate the groups’ members from the wider society, as well as providing valuable social services like hospitals, soup kitchens and schools, these groups make the cost of defection high. The result is loyalty, making terrorist cells hard to penetrate.

Berman continues an important trend that examines the strategic logic of terrorism. Robert Pape of the University of Chicago has famously concluded that suicide terrorists engage in their missions because such terrorism “pays.”

Berman goes further back in the causal chain, examining these terrorist groups’ club-like structure. In the process, he effectively discounts religious motivations. The wellknown motif of 72 virgins awaiting the suicide bomber in the afterlife is less important than the social and material costs of shirking from group-imposed obligations.

The book is highly readable, with an engaging mix of logical reasoning, comparative analysis and historical and contemporary examples. To make his case, Berman looks at contemporary Islamic terrorism, but examines other religious communities as well. He argues that the failure of the Jewish Underground’s mission – including an aborted 1978 attempt at detonating explosives on the Temple Mount – resulted from the group’s inability to ensure loyalty. And loyalty, in turn, comes from the provision of social services not given by the state.

Berman shows that religious radicals, through their specific and detailed codes surrounding dress, behaviour, living and working – radicals that include the Israeli ultraOrthodox and the American Amish – ensure commitment by providing few opportunities for secular education. Like Islamic madrassas, these sectarian schools – ultra-Orthodox yeshivas or no education at all beyond Grade 9 in the case of the Amish – lead followers to become more reliant on the group. The longer a person foregoes secular education, the more his market opportunities are reduced, and

the more reliant he becomes.

Berman’s argument that radical religious groups succeed because of their provision of social services is well known by students of civil society; many have pointed to the Hamas’ success in the 2006 Palestinian elections as being due to their broad social-structure networks. But, by writing about terrorism specifically, Berman’s arguments serve a useful counterpoint to the reactionary and ultimately unfalsifiable claims made by some who look to “barbarism” or “evil” as explanations. Falsifiability is the main way by which scientific claims can be assessed: can the hypothesis, in principle, be proven wrong? (How does one measure barbarism, or evil?)

That said, readers might not be entirely satisfied with his overturning of the suspected theological motivations so dwelled on by the media. Berman cites the work of an Israeli psychologist who interviewed failed suicide attackers and their families and friends. The subjects did not mention religion as an overriding motive. Further, he notes that some of the most lethal terrorist organizations are secular. Fair enough, but the treatment is brief.

Berman does point out that the apparent global aims of al-Qaeda and the Taliban who support them are so farreaching that those groups cannot possibly be resting their strategy on those goals. These strategies are merely a way of getting attention for their more motivating domestic governance demands.

Book Review Mira Sucharov Berman also challenges much of the current counter-insurgency practices that seek to “harden” targets (making them less vulnerable to attack). These tactics are costly and impossible to achieve on a global scale, as 9/11 proved. Instead, he promotes using a soft-power approach of propping up failing states through on-the-ground humanitarian and governance assistance. We should help governments make their social infrastructure more attractive to their citizens than the frameworks provided by these terrorist organizations, he argues. These strategies, he says, have the added benefit of being non-ideological and thus non-controversial.

He concludes by addressing the much-asked “why do they hate us?” question. His answer: “Maybe it’s not about us. It could be a much older story about something else: about the incursion of markets into traditional communities; about the weakness of governments … and about governments discriminating among their own citizens on the basis of religion.”

Berman’s findings suggest avenues for future research such as whether religious elites can be persuaded to recast potent symbols to facilitate inter-ethnic compromise. The case of Israel and the Palestinian Authority potentially sharing sovereignty over Jerusalem comes to mind. The more rationality injected into understanding seemingly irrational realms, the better off we all are.

Thinking outside the box about must-see videos I feel we should start a revolution. It’s getting to be too hard to say what I intend. I fall into some fixed phrase or aphorism or cliché, just waiting to gobble up my thoughts like black holes that then spew out something automatic.

Today, someone said to me that I have to start thinking outside the box. What he means is I have to accept his framework and his values in order to think properly. This is, of course, just another box. It may be a bigger box, or be a box with a different shape, or it may even be a smaller box.

Because, let’s face it, you can’t really think anything through unless you do it inside some mental container. The editor asks me to write a humour column of 650 words or less. I decide to think outside the box and hand him a 1,000 word essay on the difficulties of writing well. How will that work exactly?

And in writing the other piece, I have to change my frame of reference, so I am really just inside another box.

You can’t get away from the need for a box. Otherwise, you might as well just be writing gobbledygook, which may or may not be funny.

Some people value spontaneous nonsense, but, between you and me, that is just another type of box because, if you write something logical and meaningful, it doesn’t fit the dimensions of that particular crate.

So quit telling me to think outside the box and tell me what you really mean.

I receive e-mails with attached videos from acquaintances who gush that the video is “spectacular, a must-see.”

When I watch, it is usually an interesting bit from the news or a cute film of a cat playing with a dog. Very cute. But a “must-see?” Maybe not.

We have somehow been infiltrated by consumer speak and advertising pitches. Sometimes a film is a “must-see”

because there is nothing else about the subject matter that would cause you to look. Without that special compulsion of “must,” you might just ignore it or send it to the trash bin. But your acquaintances are now putting on the pressure. You almost have a moral obligation to watch their videos, especially since they will almost certainly send follow-up e-mails asking how you liked them.

Couldn’t they just ask you to do a favour for them and watch the darn videos? No, they try to create some sort of independent compulsion so that it’s not them asking but some impersonal authority that tells you that you “must see” this. The ad in the paper notes that the recent horror film is also a “must-see,” but I avoid it anyway.

So, as part of my refreshed and reinvigorated persona in the new calendar year, I am going to start doing the opposite of everything that comes at me in the form of a cliché.

If I have to see something or read this message or listen to this recording, I will erase it or ignore it. If I am told to think outside the box, I will start a lecture on why it is impossible to do that, thus annoying the person who said it to me and ensuring they never say it again.

And, if all of you start to do the same thing, who knows, we might create a movement. Viva la revoluciòn!.

Dena & Herb Gosewich celebrate 150 years of happy birthdays When she speaks, Dena Gosewich has a twinkle in her eye, an infectious personality and a great sense of humour! So when asked why she and her husband Herb recently decided to open the Dena and Herb Gosewich Endowment Fund, her response did not disappoint.

“To celebrate 150 years of Happy Birthdays,” enthused Dena. “I turned 70 and Herb turned 80, and we live in a wonderful community. It was time!”

They settled in Ottawa and raised two children, Vicky and Mandy, and have two grandchildren, Benjamin and Rebecca. Herb and Dena, members of Beth Shalom, are wellknown in the community and have built a full life as volunteers and retail entrepreneurs (Herb owned Ritchies sports shop and Dena owned Next to Nothing, a lingerie store).

Dena has been a committed volunteer serving as the Women’s Executive Director of the Jewish Community Council of Ottawa/Vaad Ha’Ir for one year, President of B’nai Brith Women, Vice-President of the National Council of Jewish Women, Chair of the 20th Anniversary of Yom Ha’Atzmaut, as well as having served on numerous committees and organizing many community fashion shows on behalf of Israel Bonds and various organizations.

Coming from Glasgow Scottland, “for me personally, living in Ottawa and being part of this Jewish community is more than I had ever imagined. I love this city and this is our way to give back,” says Dena.
