Ottawa community rallies in support of Israel By Michael Regenstreif Jewish communities in most major Canadian cities held rallies January 8 in support of Israel in its war with Hamas terrorists in Gaza. The Ottawa event drew a standingroom-only crowd of more than 400 who packed the Soloway Jewish Community Centre under tight security to express their solidarity with the Jewish state and applaud speeches from community leaders, Canadian politicians and Israel’s ambassador to Canada. Jonathan Freedman, chair of the Jewish Federation of Ottawa and a veteran of the Israel Defense Forces, hosted the rally. In his opening remarks, Freedman said everyone was “distraught by the loss of life of civilians in Israel and Gaza,” expressed “sorrow for all innocent victims,” and said he prayed for a quick end to the conflict. While Freedman expressed compassion for the civilian population caught in the crossfire, there was no doubt as to whom he held to blame for the war – dubbed by Israel as Operation Cast Lead – that began December 27 when Israel launched air attacks on Hamas targets in response to several days of intense rocket attacks by Hamas against towns and villages in the Western Negev following the expiration of a six-month ceasefire. “Hamas,” he said, “is a wholly owned subsidiary of Iran, Inc.” Israeli Ambassador Miriam Ziv thanked the Ottawa and Canadian Jewish communities, and the Canadian government and various political parties, for their support during an operation she described as slow,

difficult and dangerous. Israel, Ziv said, “had to stop this terror,” adding that the operation had the consent and support of all Israelis. Ziv also acknowledged Israel’s sorrow for all innocent Palestinians who have been killed or wounded during the war, but explained that “Hamas is using innocent people as human shields.” The ambassador pointed out that Israel has been ceasing its fire for a three-hour block each day to allow humanitarian aid to get to the besieged Gazans. She said the operation needs to conclude with a guarantee that Hamas will not be able to rebuild its arms supplies. Transport Minister John Baird spoke on behalf of the government of Canada. “The people of Canada, from coast to coast to coast, stand with Israel,” he said. Baird said that, when Israel evacuated its settlers and military from Gaza in 2005, its goal was “peaceful co-existence,” but, “what followed was 6,500 rockets” sent by terrorists who “want to instil a culture of fear.” Baird condemned Hamas as “cowardly terrorists who use women and children as shields.” He also said they use schools and mosques to store weapons. Conservative MP Pierre Poilievre (Nepean-Carleton) followed Baird to the podium and said that every lost life in the conflict, Israeli and Palestinian, was of equal value. “But that is not an argument,” he (Continued on page 2)

Ashkelon under fire: ‘we pray for a true peace’ By Marty Davis As the sirens go off and we wait in our shelter to hear the boom of the missiles, we wonder when this will end. For the past eight years, there has been constant bombardment of Sderot and the surrounding settlements. This is not about political issues; it is about civilians under extended fire. In Ashkelon, 122,000 residents have been under fire with little pro-

tection. Most homes do not have shelters as they were built in the 1950s and ‘60s. The neighbourhood shelters are underground and impossible to reach in 30 seconds. Today alone, we have received 14 rocket attacks with their accompanying physical, psychological and personal damages. The resolve of our people to stand strong against this onslaught is a direct desire to end a situation

where we have to live in fear. Our children are climbing the walls as they cannot leave their homes. Their schools and our shopping centres are closed. Children are so terrorized that six- and sevenyear-olds are wetting their beds. They demand the lights stay on all night, but still tell of nightmares the next morning – all this on a daily basis. Our children will need psy(Continued on page 2)
