Family members of the late Kaylie Bailey and her missing 18-month-old daughter, Lana, made a public plea Wednesday night, asking whomever might have the toddler to return her to her family. “Please give her back,” Linda Journeys, Lana’s greataunt, said. “That’s all we want.” Shawn Pettijohn, Kaylie Bailey’s sister, also spoke at the Wednesday night news conference in Ottawa, regarding the case and the continued search for Lana. Pettijohn said she hoped the little girl, who had a vivacious personality, would be found. “She’s 18 months. She loves holding things up to her ear and saying, ‘I.’ She loves clapping her hands. She’ll make you work hard for a smile, but it’s always worth it,” Pettijohn said. “She has the biggest blue eyes any aunt would love, and I certainly do. We’re just hoping to hear good news about Lana at any time.” See LANA, Page 8

Where is Lana Bailey? That’s the question family, community members and law enforcement officers were trying to answer Wednesday night as the search continued for the missing 18-month-old girl whose mother was identified by authorities Wednesday as one of the victims of a triple homicide discovered earlier this week in rural Ottawa. The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office released the identities of three bodies found Monday and Tuesday at 3197 Georgia Road, west of Ottawa, during a press conference late Wednesday afternoon. The victims were Lana’s mother, Kaylie Bailey, 21, Olathe, Andrew Stout, 30, Ottawa, and Steven White, 31, Ottawa, Franklin County Sheriff Jeff Richards told reporters gathered in front of the sheriff’s office, 305 S. Main St., Ottawa. Bailey and Lana were reported missing May 3. Stout and White were last seen April 25.

The site of a triple homicide discovery Monday and Tuesday at 3197 Georgia Road is shown west of Ottawa. Bailey and her daughter were last seen at the Georgia Road residence, Sheriff Jeff Richards told reporters Wednesday. Stout and White had lived in the modular home on the property with Kyle Flack, a person of interest in the case. Bailey reportedly was in a relationship with Stout. Her body was found Monday in a detached garage on the property. The two men were found Monday and Tuesday in the home, ac-

cording to the sheriff’s office. Frontier Forensics began conducting autopsies on the three bodies at 6 p.m. Tuesday to determine a cause or manner of death for each of the bodies, and Richards said Wednesday the forensics evidence positively identified Bailey, Stout and White. But he declined to say how the three were killed, adding he did not want to provide any details that might impede

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation are asking for assistance from the media and the public in an effort to locate Lana. She is described as an 18-month-old female toddler, 2 feet tall, 30 pounds, with light brown hair and blue eyes, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation said Wednesday afternoon in a press release. An Amber Alert has not been issued for Lana. “Our priority right now is finding Lana,” Richards said Wednesday afternoon. Authorities had been searching for Flack, as well as a black 2007 Toyota Corolla he allegedly was driving.

NEW UNDERSHERIFF

Geist relishes opportunity to help sheriff rebuild trust By ABBY CROSTHWAIT Herald Staff Writer

“Deputy Russel Geist, No. 298 is 10-7.” Those words, read by Franklin County dispatch, signaled the retirement of a young sheriff’s deputy’s badge number after his untimely Oct. 12, 2011, death at age 28. This week — a year and a half later — Russel Geist’s badge number was reassigned; brought out of retirement and given to his father, Rick Geist, Franklin County’s new undersheriff. Geist, Ottawa, was appointed to the post by Franklin County Sheriff Jeff Richards and sworn in Monday morning at the Franklin County Board of Commissioners meeting. “I was pretty shocked when Sheriff Richards asked me if I would accept taking [Rus-

sel’s] badge number,” Geist said. “It’s an honor to accept where my son had left off, and I can pick back up on it.” Richards said the gesture of bringing the badge out of retirement isn’t taken lightly. “The significance of that badge being retired Geist is still significant, and you wouldn’t just bring one out of retirement just for something insignificant,” Richards said. “Once [Geist’s] service is done at the sheriff’s department, it’ll go back to being retired again.” See GEIST, Page 2
