MERS: A NEW DANGER

MEASLES THREAT IS GROWING Measles is one of the most contagious diseases in the world and is a leading cause of vaccine-preventable death among children.** It is transmitted through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Measles has been around for centuries, and before the U.S. vaccine program was developed in 1963, about 3 million to 4 million U.S. residents got the disease every year. More recently, the U.S. has

Most often, it causes mild infections on the skin, like sores or boils. But it can also cause more serious skin infections or infect surgical wounds, the bloodstream, the lungs or the urinary tract. Though most MRSA infections aren’t serious, some can be life-threatening.

Older Adults with Diabetes

BEWARE OF LOW BLOOD SUGAR “Unfortunately, some medications might drop your blood sugar, and this could make you feel sick,” states Yelena Isayenko, MD, MBA, a physician with Otsego Memorial Hospital Medical Group – Family Practice. As a matter of fact, adults with diabetes age 75 or older visit the emergency department for low blood sugar almost three times as often as adults ages 45 to 64 with the disease.*

Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) can be a problem for anyone with diabetes, but it is especially a risk for those who use insulin. It can lead to heart attack, seizures, stroke, coma and even death, so it’s important to take it seriously. One problem is that some people’s bodies stop alerting them to impending low blood sugar. Also, once someone’s blood sugar is low, they may not be able to treat themselves. Dr. Isayenko reminds that it is important to check blood sugar up to four times a day, including before meals and at bedtime.

Managing diabetes requires a careful balance of healthy eating, physical activity, weight management and sometimes multiple medications that must be taken at different times and in different ways. For older adults, managing diabetes may become an even greater challenge.

Factors that sometimes affect older adults trying to manage their diabetes include difficulties in preparing or eating food, decreased ability to exercise, a change in kidney or liver function or blood circulation, other diseases and taking multiple medications.

TAKE CHARGE You can learn to control your diabetes, even as you age. Making healthy food choices is crucial to keeping your glucose level under control. You don’t need to buy or prepare special foods; just be sure to eat foods that are low in fat, salt and sugar.

“It is crucial to avoid food rich in carbohydrates such as rice, potatoes, bread, pasta and sweets. These foods usually increase blood sugar, they can make you gain weight and feel tired,” says Dr. Isayenko. It is important to consume food high in fiber, such as beans, fruits, vegetables and whole grains. These foods help you reach and stay at a healthy weight, keep your blood pressure, glucose and cholesterol in a desirable range, and prevent or delay heart and blood vessel disease.

Managing You Age Regular physical activity is also very important. You should talk to your doctor about what kinds of exercise would be best for you. If you haven’t been active for a while, start slowly and gradually add more time and/or intensity. Shoot for a goal of 30 to 60 minutes of physical activity most days of the week. Dr. Isayenko says to keep in mind that it doesn’t have to be done in one session — 10 minutes at a time is fine, or even getting outside for 20-30 minutes will help you stay on the wellness path.

Dr. Williams encourages parents to schedule well-baby visits for 2 weeks, 2 months, 4 months, 6 months, 9 months and 12 months of age to help you keep your baby’s health on track.

CHOOSING THE BEST TOYS FOR YOUR BABY The American Academy of Pediatrics suggests the best way to encourage your baby’s development is with consistent warm physical contact, regularly talking or singing to the child and stimulating his senses with colorful objects of different shapes, sizes and textures. A few well-chosen toys can help.

•A brightly colored mobile or other movable object hung above the crib out of your baby’s reach helps her focus and provides stimulation.

• Rattles will hold your baby’s attention and give him something to hold on to as his grip develops.

• Soft, washable toys are easy to grip and promote exercise through movement.

• Reading to your baby from durable books with large, bright pictures lets her hear you talk and mimic your sounds.

• As your baby gets older and begins to understand cause and effect, pop-up toys become hugely entertaining.

• Puppets and toys with finger holes help develop hand control.

Before purchasing any toy for your baby, check the package for the recommended age. Keep in mind that any toy can be dangerous if used incorrectly, so be sure to always supervise your baby’s play.

Plan Ahead to Stay Fit this Winter As the seasons change from fall to winter, do you find yourself wondering how you’ll stay on track and fit during the chilly months? Many people skip exercise all together for a month or two before the holidays, then find themselves in a panic as the new year looms and their waistbands strain. No wonder gyms are packed in January! By planning ahead you can avoid winter weight gain. Follow these tips, and you will be singing the song of success as winter turns to spring.

Keep weight loss goals in mind and write them down.

Have you ever worked hard to lose weight for a class reunion, wedding or other special event? This time of year you might want to look good for a party or make sure your swimsuit fits when you head south for a trip or cruise.

Establish specific weight loss goals with your doctor if you are suffering from health issues (such as diabetes or high blood pressure) that are exacerbated by your weight. Whether it’s losing 10 pounds or 50 or more — keep your goals handy and refer to them when temptation strikes.

It's also a good time to focus on toning your muscles with a Pilates or yoga routine, and a good instructor can teach you how to burn calories and get toned at the same time. Plus

DEVOTED TO THE OUTDOORS? STAY SAFE AND WARM If you can’t bear to give up that outdoor run or walk, or your four-legged friend drags you outside, here are a few things to keep in mind: Layer up and keep your noggin covered. Dressing in layers keeps you warmer, helps wick away moisture and gives you the option to remove a layer or two if you get too warm. Heat escapes quickly from your head, so don’t leave home without your hat.

Lighten up. Reflective gear, light-colored clothing and flashlights improve visibility as the days get shorter.

Seek safe and happy trails. Walk or run on sidewalks by well-traveled roads so others are close by if you need help. City-maintained paths are also more likely to be clear of snow and ice so you’ll be less likely to stumble.

Keep an eye on the temp. Check temperature, wind chill and weather reports before you venture out. If you know it’s extra frigid, keep your journey short, and just stay in if winter weather is approaching.

As of September 17, 2014 the Otsego Memorial Hospital Foundation has granted $430,000 to the hospital. Of that, $293,000 was designated for the McReynolds Hall Renovation Campaign.

Remaining funds were used to support patient equipment and programs at OMH and within the OMH Medical Group, including OMH Oncology. Every gift makes a difference and 100 percent of donor dollars are used to enhance patient care. Thank you for your continued and generous support!
