ecently, Davao City- the capital seat of Davao Region was officially named the Cacao Capital of the Philippines. This is because the city continues to be the top producer of Cacao Beans in the entire country with a combined production of 6,621,108 MT in 2019 or 78% of the country’s total production.

As part of the region, Davao de Oro contributed as much as 572.57 MT cacao beans last year and named as the 4th largest producer of cacao beans in the region.

Given the above data, the industry is seen with so much potentials both in the domestic and export markets. The players are growing in number, and production areas are expanding led by our big farmer cooperatives and there is an increasing number of cacao processors in the province. To name a few, are our Cacao and Beyond brand by Comval Tropical Fruit Harvest Trading, Inc who is processing chocolates packed in various variance and sizes, another one is Maria Cacao Tableya Products by Octa M farm products that processed Cacao Tableya, Chips, Cacao Ampao, Cacao brownies and others.

Under the new program of DTI - a foreign funded project called RAPID Growth, Cacao is one the enrolled industries for this program where players are tied up with institutional buyers through a commercial partnership agreement. Coffee, Coconut and Processed Fruits and Nuts are also enrolled in this project.

acao trade within the Philippines is rising per annum, a suggests that to satisfy the increasing demand and therefore to address and check deficiencies of the ways and means of farming is critical to sustain as to Chamber of Commerce President

of the Philippines(Perez, A., 2016).Cacao farmers in Mindanao are being urged to extend production as there’s a rising demand for the trade goods and is predicted to cause a worldwide shortage of a few million metric tons by the year 2020, in keeping with the pinnacle of a neighborhood producers’ cluster(Quiros,2012).

In the near future, Davao will be known as the “chocolate capital of the Philippines.” With 23,000 hectares planted to cacao, the region accounts for 80% of the national production.

(The other 10% comes from the rest of Mindanao; Luzon and Visayas contributes the remaining 10%.). According to the resolution, the council noted that cacao production in the region has been increasing since 2010 with an average growth of at least six percent annually from 2010 to 2016, making it the center of the cacao trade in the country(Tacio,2018).

The province of Compostela Valley is one of those areas planted cacao trees.

An area of 120 hectare will be in Compostela Valley. Cacao (known in the science world as Theobroma cacao) has been grown in the region for several decades now. In cacao production, Compostela Valley made to the 2nd rank of highest planted with about 5,900 ha. These were the results of the study funded by the Department of Science and Technology’s Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development.

The study was intended to develop a national database on the location of plantations and identify possible expansion areas(Fernandez,2018).

The sites covered by the research include Compostela Valley00. And is one of the observed areas with high potential for planting cacao commodity. Because it is capable, through this profiling the industry will be nurtured and the outcome of this can be used as a basis to future investments. And also as a mutual benefit of the project the authority will have the ideas and information on how to develop the cacao industry.

STRUCTURE OF THE INDUSTRY Cacao. The tree that bears cacao seeds, which are contained in large, oval pods that grow on the trunk. It is now cultivated mainly in West Africa. With scientific name “Theobroma cacao” means food of the gods in Greek. It also called cocoa, tropical evergreen tree (family Malvaceae) grown for its edible seeds and native to lowland rainforests of the Amazon and Orinoco river basins. Its seeds, called cocoa beans, are processed into cocoa powder, cocoa butter, and chocolate. This article treats the cultivation of the cacao plant.

Cocoa Dried Beans. The major product of Comval Cacao Players. Cacao dried beans command a higher price in the market. It has marketed to variosu chocolate making companies in the region including of that in Comval Province.

Cocoa Nibs. Cacao nibs are essentially eating the cacao bean itself as they have been roasted, separated from their husks and broken into smaller pieces. When we use the word ‘Cocoa‘ it is usually in reference to the processed, final product. Cacao is how any form of chocolate starts out as the beans come from the Theobroma cacao tree.

Cocoa Liqour (Tableya).

Another by-product of Cacao beans, the tableya. Majority of cacao players also process tableya as their additional products but recently, a number of tableya processors are evidently increasing in the province as the demand also increased drastically.

he Provinces’ key players of this industry primary has big role to sustain the production of such commodity. Key players may be big, small, and processors. Big players possessing hectares of land that does rely with the assistance from the government refused to disclose details. Small players from associations and independent farmers are usually those people that we can have direct access in terms of information.

Since there is a big difference between the total farmers and total area, it can be concluded that an individual farmer possess a bigger area of land. The table also shows that the municipality of New Bataan got the highest total number of area of 904.71 has with 506 total number of farmers; followed by Pantukan with 895.95 and 193 total farmers; then Nabunturan with 854 has and 210 farmers; next with Laak 764.94 with 1,027 and followed with the Municipality of Maco, Maragusan, Montevista, Monkayo, Mawab, Mabini and Compostela.

From the illustration above Maragusan got the highest production with 318 MT. Followed by municipality of Mabini with 255.18 MT. Then Pantukan with 215.97 MT. Next is Maco with 147 MT. Fifth is New Bataan with 85 MT, Nabunturan with 42 MT, Monkayo with 23.51, Compostela with 19.1, Laak with 12.93 and Montevista with 11.79 MT.

STRUCTURE OF THE INDUSTRY | Production Cacao SPECIES. In comval, Criollo is the dominant cacao variety and currently, Planting 3 to 5 varieties/clones of cacao in a farm is recommended primarily to enhance pollination. The following are the varieties cacao in Comval.

STRUCTURE OF THE INDUSTRY | Production The Cacao Production SITE SELECTION. When analyzing for our cacao farm, take into the following: Soil. Aggregated clay-loam or sandy-loam soil with 150cm depth, pH 5.5 to 6.5, avoid rocky areas, or where there is a hard layer of top soil. Water Source. Have good source of water with good drainage system, the ideal annual rainfall is 1,300 - 2, 500mm. Altitude & Topography. 10-1000 meters above sea level, best thrive at 300-800 meters elevation, gently sloping terrain. Climatic Requirement. Type IV Climate, mean annual temperatures: 30-31*C (Mean maximum), 18*C (mean minimum), cacao grows well in areas with high humidity: 100% at night, 70%-80% at day Shade Requirement. 75% - 0-1 year (vegetable stage), 50% - 1-2 years (vegetable stage), 25% - 2 years up (productive stage)

SELECTING QUALITY PLANTING MATERIAL.

Good planting material is the basis for tree planting success. Don’t let your land preparation efforts be wasted by choosing inferior quality plants.

LAND PREPARATION. Layout and Staking. Mark the planting points using a rope or string

to ensure straight lines. Use one meter stakes to mark your planting points. These marks will serve as a guide for holing. Do round weeding (half a meter or one meter radius from the hole to clear the planting points from weeds, Make this a regular every two months) after planting. For upland or sloping areas, implementing microcatchment system is recommended. Upland micro-catchment is a specially flattened hole water catching system that is designed to increase runoff from rain and collect it in soil basins. Planting Distance. The recommended minimum planting distance is three-by-three (3x3) meters between hills and rows. If intercropped with perennial crops or trees observe similar distance in between the crops. Proper spacing is important to help the trees grow and develop. Adequate space will prevent competition for sunlight, water and nutrients. Overcrowding leads to stunted growth and poor yields.

FIELD PLANTING. Steps to Planting. 1) Put 1-2 kilograms of organic fertilizer or compost

material in the hole, 2.) Put back the top soil, 3). Place the seedling into the hole (with the polyethylene bag removed), 4) Place the inorganic fertilizer in the hole around the seedling, 5) Put all the soil back in the hole, 6) Gently press the soil along the side avoiding the seedling base, 7) Coconut husks, dried grass, and banana leaves can be used for mulching to conserve soil moisture.

SHADE MAINTENANCE. Maintain the shade at 75% during the first year of planting. At the

start of the second year, the shade should be reduced 50% using taller trees. At the end of the second year and during the productive stage the shade should be at 25% - 30%.

STRUCTURE OF THE INDUSTRY | Market Trends Marketing Strategies Currently, Comval Cacao farmers do utilize usual marketing strategy, that is marketing their products individually to local consolidators, middlemen and institutional buyers. Social Media, streamers, signages and through government activities are the means of promoting their products. Cacao players are also affiliated with the CIDAMI - A cacao industry organization in Davao City. Word of mouth still works as an effective marketing strategy for the players, as such the experience of Comval Tropical Harvest Company on their various cacao value-added products.

1.1 Target Market Domestic Market. The demand in the local market for cacao Beans, cacao nibs and other products is increasing. Data shows that Comval is one of the sources of cacao beans both wet and dried in Davao Region.

Kennemer Foods International, Inc. is still the largest cacao buyer not only in Comval but in Davao Region as well. They get cacao beans direct from the farmers.

Cacao Processors. Local processors are also the target markets of Cacao beans. They process it to tableya, chocolates, and cacao nibs. As of 2019, there are 10 processors in Compostela Valley.

Market Trends The Philippines is said to be the first country in Asia that planted cacao. However, the country is still an importer of cocoa products such as chocolate, cocoa powder, cocoa beans, and cocoa butter. In 2014, a total of USD 102.3-M worth of import was recorded, while export value was at USD 24.3 - M only.

The large import of cocoa powder and export value of chocolate is being credited to major chocolate manufacturers in the coutnry that seldom buy local cocoa beans, Instead, they use imported power and cocoa butter for their raw materials. This in effect increases the importation of cocoa powder making it the leading cacao product import in 2014. Consequently, some of the finished by-products produced by local manufacturers are being exported to other countries.

While considered a snack food in developed countries, chocolate in the Philippines is mostly eaten buring special occassion or given as gifts. Among the major chocolate manufacturers located in the country are Universal Robina Corporation, Commonwealth Foods, Inc., Goya Inc and Columbia International Food Products Inc. Most of these companies are situated in Luzon, with capacity ranging 20,000 to 36,000 MT of processed cocoa annually. Universal Robina accounts 38% of the chocolate market, with Cloud Nine and Nips as top products.

Grinding requirement of lcoal chocokate manufacturers is at 40,000MT while national production is only at 10,000MT. A portion of this 10,000MT is also being exported or processed at source, hence not at all production is being consumed by the local grinders prompting them to import cocoa beans from other countries. It is reported that the Philippines imports 50,000MT of cocoa preparations to meet the local demand.

The presence of players from all stages in the cacao value chain places the Philippines at a competitive advantage. Locally, the discrepancy between the grinding requirements of manufactureres and the existing national production entails more opportunities for production expansion to meet local demand. In addition, local processors offer higher buying price for cocoa beans compared to bean exporters.

STRUCTURE OF THE INDUSTRY | Market Trends World Trends on Demand for Cocoa Revenue in the Cocoa segment amounts to US$169.0m in 2019. The market is expected to grow annually by 2.1% (CAGR 2019-2023). In global comparison, most revenue is generated in United States (US$3,371m in 2019). In relation to total population figures, per person revenues of US$1.56 are generated in 2019. The average per capita consumption stands at 0.2 kg in 2019.

STRUCTURE OF THE INDUSTRY | Price Trends Normally, the local price of the country’s cocoa beans is correlated with the international commodities pricing. Howver, when there is an increased volume in local cacao processing on a certain period (i.e tablea processors) and supply of raw materials is nil, it pushes the local price up considering the “tablea” does not at all times conform to world market prrice.

Dried bean prices has moved up from as low as P30.00/kg in 2007, P70.00 in 2009 to as high as Php 115 in 2014. Dried fermented cocoa beans get a premium of around Php 10.00 - Php 15.00 per kilogram for fermented beans.

Cacao is the only agricultural commodity that defies the law of supply and demand. Unlike other commodities , the price of cocoa beans are generally higher during peak season.

Low production is betweem January to April with the price at its lowest. However, during the peak production period, i.e October up to early January, the price is also at its highest.

Incidentally, this period is also the peak inventory month of cacao bean for ocassions such as Halloween, Christmas and Valentine’s Day.

As shown in Figure 9, products have undergone value-adding processess are more valued.

Per industry estimate, the value of beans increases four times when converted to tablea and increases eight times when converted to chocolate. this entails that inorder to gain higher profitability, producers must value-add their products instead of settling into wet or dried beans alone.
