Homewood Celebrates a Century as a City

T

he City of Homewood is celebrating its centennial this year—these days anything lasting 100 years is quite an accomplishment. After my retirement from the Homewood City Council, I decided to co-chair the city’s centennial committee with my friend and former councilmate Walter Jones. We’ve already had a wonderful night celebrating some of Homewood’s talented authors, and the Homewood Arts Council is currently hosting an art exhibit in the lobby of City Hall featuring five amazing Homewood artists (Michelle Hazelwood Hyde, Mary Liz Ingram, Shawn Fitzwater, Melissa Gilmore and KC Templeton) that will be up until the end of August. Go by and check it out. Another thing we’re doing is recognizing homes in our community that have been around for a century. Check out the story on page 18 by our interns Nausicaa Chu and Mary Clare Ingram (who may or may not be related to one of the featured artists!) on these amazing 100-year-old homes. In the age of tear downs and rebuilds, having a house that has stood the test of time for 100 years is something to celebrate!

And speaking of our interns, we are so lucky to have the aforementioned Naus and Mary Clare with us this summer. Naus interned last summer and continued to write for us during her senior year at St. Paul’s School in New Hampshire, where she graduated this spring and is headed to Yale in the fall! Mary Clare is a Homewood High School grad who is a rising junior at American University in Washington D.C. And we’re also thrilled to welcome Naima Salvary, a rising senior at Alabama School of Fine Arts, where she is in the creative writing program. You’ll be seeing their names a lot in our pages over the next few issues and for years to come in whatever arena they choose, because these young women are superstars!

AN EVENING AMONG THE ROSES 2026 Ball of Roses Celebrates 66 Years

FORTY-FIVE YOUNG WOMEN were presented during the 66th Annual Ball of Roses on June 6 at the Country Club of Birmingham. The evening was sponsored by James Davidson Grisham, Sr. The event was hosted by the Ballet Guild of Birmingham, led

by President Fairfax Davis Yarbrough and Vice President Katherine Alton Brown. Mary Virginia Grisham served as Ball Chair, and Julia Bynum Stewart served as Co-Chair.

Festivities began with a seated dinner for members and guests of the Men’s Committee—patrons of the Ballet Guild of Birmingham. Following dinner, the presentees were formally introduced and made their debut in the ballroom before the evening continued with dancing and celebration with family and friends.

The ballroom was transformed into an elegant summer garden, with a custom floral ceiling installation serving as the focal point of the evening. Wrapped columns, soft draping and arrangements in shades of light pink, baby blue, lilac and white carried the garden-inspired design throughout the room. Near the entrance, a display of hanging satin pointe shoes and moss ballerina statues offered a graceful tribute to the Alabama Ballet.

Floral design for the evening was created by Mary Cox Brown of Marigold Designs.

The Men’s Committee Dinner was chaired by Camilla Bryant Grisham alongside Co-Chair Ellie Dowden Priester. Frances Tynes and Katie Lupton Gamble led the effort to gather donated greenery from the private gardens of Mountain Brook and greater Birmingham, continuing one of the Ball of Roses’ most meaningful traditions.

Birmingham Vegan Fest 2026

ON MAY 3, vegans and the vegan curious celebrated at Vegan Fest—Alabama’s largest vegan festival organized by Birmingham Vegans. Vegan Fest featured local food trucks, pop-up vendors, DJs, door prizes and information on the growing plant-based scene in Birmingham at Cahaba Brewing Co. The free event featured vendors included Slutty Vegan Birmingham, Imagine Vegan Café, Oh My Cod Vegan Seafood, Vujee Vegan, Divine Plant-Based Cuisine, Superior Vegan and many others offering diverse plant-based foods and products.

Hoover Belles Welcome New Members THE HOOVER BELLES, a service organization for teen girls who serve as representatives for the city, held its 43rd annual presentation ceremony for new inductees at the Hoover Country Club on May 3. Each member of the new class of Belles has committed to serve two years, volunteering at least 40 community service hours at civic and charity events including city events, local summer camps and church and local non-profit volunteer work.

Representative Mike Shaw spoke at the event, and over 300 guests attended the event, enjoying music by Tri City Jazz. InToto Creative Arts expands the transformative power of the arts to those affected by homelessness, mental illness, post-traumatic stress, disability and other significant life challenges. Magic City Wine Fest

ON MAY 30, guests came out to sip, savor and support a local non-profit at the ninth annual Cahaba Dermatology Magic City Wine Fest at the Hoover Met. Planned and hosted by iHeartMedia, the Magic City Wine Fest saw more than 2,000 guests sampling over 100 wines and craft beer for a great cause, with a portion of the festival’s proceeds going to Hoover Helps, an organization that is dedicated to ensuring children in Hoover have access to nutritious food and basic necessities when school meals aren’t available. By partnering with schools and community organizations, they help identify needs and deliver direct support to children facing food insecurity. and in Paw will host the 25th Annual Picasso Pets on August 22 at the iconic Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum. The signature gala will celebrate 25 years of creativity, compassion and community support for Hand in Paw’s Animal-Assisted Therapy programs across Central Alabama and Tuscaloosa.

Picasso Pets is one of Birmingham’s most beloved nonprofit events, bringing together art lovers, animal lovers, donors, sponsors and community leaders for an evening benefiting Hand in Paw’s mission.

Each year, one Rotarian in Rotary District 6860 (52 clubs in North Alabama) is recognized for Vocational Service on a District, State, Regional, National or World basis. Nominations are submitted to the Council of Governors to select the Rotarian to receive the award. District 6860 selected Dr. Todd Freeman, the superintendent of Vestavia Hills City Schools and a member of the Vestavia Hills Rotary Club, as the recipient of the 2026 District 6860 Vocational Service Award, presented to him by DG Butler Cain at the club’s meeting on June 16.

Dr. Freeman’s distinguished career in public education spans more than three decades, including serving as Superintendent in two Alabama school systems. Dr. Freeman is in his eighth year as superintendent of VHCS and was recently named the 2026 Alabama Superintendent of the Year. His accomplishments reflect a career marked by excellence, integrity and service well beyond the boundaries of his local community.

Dr. Freeman joined Rotary in 2013 and is a Past President of the Sylacauga Rotary Club. He has been a member of the Vestavia Hills Rotary Club since 2018. He lives in Vestavia Hills with his wife, Rachel, and their two sons, Sam and Jake. OTMJ

Tony Lombardo taught at UAB, John Carroll Catholic High School (from Fall, 1998-Spring, 2006) and retired from teaching at Vestavia Hills High School.

Aside from teaching, music was his love. He taught for over 45 years at Highland Music and mentored his students for years. He was a highly respected guitarist, banjo player and teacher. His band played venues across Alabama and the south such as City Stages, the Museum of Art and countless weddings.

Beyond his great talent he was the most loving, kind soul to his large family and many friends.

I hired him years ago to write and proof for the Alys Stevens center. Most recently he edited a book I’ve written. Tony was one of only a handful of people whom I consider my dearest and closest friends.

DON MURDOCH // HIGHLAND MUSIC I knew Tony in high school. The Lombardo’s lived down the street. And then around ‘81, Tony showed up at Highland Music. I think he was playing banjo at Shakey’s Pizza. Tony probably knew as much about theory on the guitar as anybody, and he started teaching lessons at the shop. Later he started teaching English at John Carroll. He would ride his old bike by the shop every morning on the way to teach and he had to concentrate because he could not see very well, and we’d go out front and yell, ‘HEY TONY!!’ My dad and my stepmom loved hearing Tony play at the Fish Market every Tuesday. For 20 years they went and they loved him.

LANEY CLARK // ROJO I remember fondly those early days of sitting at the bar and discussing books with Tony.

I had an English degree and taught school briefly, and he was an English teacher, so it was always fun to talk to him. Tony was so kind and gentle in his manner and always had a smile on his face.

KELLY SIMPSON // MUSICIAN Tony Lombardo was the nicest guy in the world and a blast to play with. He had a vibe and an approach to life and treating people properly that I wish more people had. He was an extra-strength human being.

LUKE LUCAS // MUSICIAN Everyone thinks of Tony as mellow but he gave as well as he got. I remember a story about him at the bar out on Green Springs called Norms. He got kicked out early one morning so he went around the back and climbed a big wall and dropped back in.

I especially knew Tony from hanging out on the couch Saturdays at Highlands. We had a lot of mutual friends, but we bonded over being teachers. He was just so funny. He was deadpan and he would get you.

Homewood’s 100-Year-Old Houses

As the city turns 100, Homewood homeowners reflect on the character and charm of their historic houses.

n 1926, Rosedale, Grove Park and Edgewood merged to become the City of Homewood, later annexing Hollywood and officially becoming incorporated by the state. Now, as the city celebrates its centennial, Homewood has nearly 28,000 citizens, and many of its original homes are still standing.

For homeowners, these hundred-year-old houses are more than just places to live. Their arches, alcoves, clay tile roofs, hand-crafted woodwork and iron railings embody the history of Homewood. These features also give the houses something that can be hard to find in modern homes: character. “The house is a visual reminder of our city’s history and part of what makes Homewood unique and special,” says homeowner Katie Tipton.

She says the homes engage others in the city’s history. She recalls visitors asking about the house, how it came to be there, who built it and when. “Preserving our older homes keeps

Homewood’s history and charm alive!” says homeowner Chloe Blankenhorn.

Homewood was once populated with farmhouses, but once the area was more settled, Craftsman, Tudor and Spanish revival styles started to dominate the architecture.

“A 100-year-old house provides a sense of belonging and security through the time-tested materials and craftsmanship that went into its construction,” says homeowner Eddie Griffith.

He says local lumber, masonry, concrete, stone and cast iron make up the structure and character of the homes without the plastic or simulated elements used in homes today.

These historic houses also make Homewood feel like a close-knit neighborhood. Lori Renkl moved to Homewood in 1976 after moving from apartment to apartment.

Homewood was paradise, she says. Every evening, Renkl would walk through Homewood with her father. He would make up stories about the families living in the neighborhood’s homes. “As we walked down Ardsley, I pointed out my favorites, the trio of brick houses on the corner, the white one with the bank of windows and the little craftsman with the rock rubble columns. My father took special care with the stories he created for those houses. It was a lovely end to the day,” Renkl says.

After Renkl married, her father pointed out that one of her favorite Ardsley houses was for sale. “Michael and I walked through the house and made an offer the next day. And suddenly the house was ours. My parents were so happy.

I was so happy!” she says.

Last month, Renkl and her neighbors celebrated her son Max’s engagement to his girlfriend Marguerite, a neighbor who grew up just across from Renkl’s house. She was sad her parents weren’t there to celebrate the engagement but recalled a neighborhood memory that made the moment mean even more. “At that first block party so many years ago, I took baby Max, and baby Marguerite was there with her parents. My mom and dad were there too; they met the baby who would grow into the remarkable young woman their grandson will marry,” Renkl says.

Homeowners who grew up in Homewood or moved into the city later emphasize the feeling of community that the longstanding neighborhoods have provided them and their families.

GRIT Land Co. is a dream come true for B.J. Davis. The son of a home builder, he initially followed in his dad’s footsteps. But Davis soon realized that instead of managing the nuts-and-bolts aspects of the business, his strengths lay in building relationships, serving people, and helping others find opportunities through real estate.

Armstead lives in the Hollywood neighborhood with JeNorri, who works for Samford, and their three kids plus their goldendoodle, Ted. “Family is the easy answer to almost every question about why I do what I do,” Armstead concludes.

W

hen Winslow Armstead graduated from Hoover High School in 1997, he had two goals: to play football at the University of Alabama and to stay close to his then girlfriend, now wife, JeNorri, who also went to Alabama.

Armstead accomplished both goals, playing for Coach Mike Dubose as an outside linebacker before a series of injuries and surgeries cut his playing career short and eventually marrying JeNorri. “Football didn’t end the way I planned,” Armstead says, “but I continued working in the Athletic Department, earned four letters and learned lessons in leadership, hard work and perseverance that have stayed with me ever since.” Armstead graduated and started his career in the Management Associate Program at First Commercial Bank. For the past 19 years, Armstead has worked at Altec, Inc., currently leading the company’s marketing and communications efforts.

In 2016, the Armsteads—now with their three kids Canon, Calista and Caeten—moved to Homewood. Armstead immediately got involved in the community, eventually being appointed to the Homewood Planning Commission, where he served as Vice Chair, and then joining the Board of Zoning Adjustments in 2024. “Five years on Planning and two on the BZA gave me a clear-eyed view of how the city works,” Armstead says. In 2025, when Homewood changed its form of government, Armstead

felt the call to serve. “It got real in a hurry, and raising my hand to serve again felt like the natural next step,” he recalls. “The driving force behind running is the same as the driving force behind how we try to live: Lead by example. Be involved. Serve your neighbors. Set the bar for our kids and for others by showing up. That’s the through-line in everything.”

Armstead campaigned during the summer of 2025 on three pillars: maintaining Homewood’s quality of life and protecting neighborhood character, supporting schools and public safety and investing in parks, trails and walkability; listening first and advocating with purpose with regular listening sessions, ward walks, virtual meetings for busy families and a real feedback loop with residents and planning for strategic growth and development with thoughtful redevelopment of places like Brookwood Village, smart infill and traffic planning that anticipate growth rather than reacting to it.

In August 2025, Armstead was elected as the Ward 4 representative.

Armstead currently serves as the council liaison to the Board of Education and the Parks and Recreation Board and also works closely with the Environmental Commission. “I’ve learned that almost nothing in a city operates in its own lane—a drainage question at the BZA is also a parks question and sometimes a school question,” Armstead says. “Sitting at the liaison table forces you to think across all of it, and I’ve come to appreciate how much careful work our boards and city staff do.”

While focusing on issues facing Ward 4—

Born and raised in Birmingham, Paul Simmons II has spent much of his life serving others through healthcare, faith and community involvement. After attending the University of Alabama at Birmingham and Faulkner University, Simmons took his skills to the healthcare sphere, where he now serves as a sales representative with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama.

“My career has given me the opportunity to help individuals, families and businesses navigate important healthcare decisions, and it has reinforced the importance of listening, problem-solving and servant leadership,” Simmons says.

A little more than 12 years ago, Simmons moved his family to Homewood. “We moved to Homewood because we were drawn to its strong sense of community, outstanding schools, walkable neighborhoods and the pride residents take in their city,” Simmons says. “Like many families, we wanted to be part of a place where neighbors know one another and where people are invested in making their community better.”

Simmons also saw running for city council as a chance to serve the city he has grown to love. “My decision to run wasn’t driven by a single issue as much as it was a desire to serve,” Simmons says. “As I became more involved in the community, I saw opportunities to help bring people together, improve communication between residents and city government and ensure that growth occurs thoughtfully and responsibly. Ultimately, I ran because I believed public service was a way to give back to a community that has given so much to its citizens.” Simmons ran to represent Ward 2 (the West Homewood community) and won.

I learned that people want to be heard. Residents may not always agree on every issue, but they appreciate leaders who listen and engage respectfully.”

Since taking his place on the council, Simmons serves as the City Council liaison to Samford and the Homewood Public Library.

“Serving in these roles has given me a greater appreciation for the partnerships that help make Homewood such a vibrant community,” Simmons says. “Many of our institutions are doing incredible work behind the scenes, and that collaboration is essential to solving challenges and creating opportunities.” With his eye to the future, Simmons is focused on managing growth, maintaining aging infrastructure, addressing traffic and connectivity concerns and ensuring that redevelopment projects align with the community’s vision for the future in West Homewood. “I want to help create solutions that balance progress with preservation and position our community for long-term success,” he says.

And like Armstead, family is at the heart of everything Simmons does—his wife, Apryl, and their daughters, Ava and Ashlyn, color almost every decision he makes. “They are my greatest motivation and constantly remind me why building strong communities matters,” Simmons says. “Homewood has been a tremendous place for our family, and serving on the City Council is one way I can give back and help ensure future generations enjoy the same opportunities and sense of community that we have experienced. At the end of the day, I view public service as an extension of the values my family and faith have instilled in me: service, stewardship, integrity, and a commitment to helping others.” OTMJ

VESTAVIA HILLS’ MILLER HATFIELD FINDS HIS GAME, AND HIS FUTURE, IN ATLANTA

estavia Hills native Miller Hatfield is turning heads in Georgia’s large and competitive lacrosse community. The rising senior shined as a goalkeeper throughout 2025-26, leading his high school team, Hebron Christian Academy, to a 16-3 record and a berth in the 2026 GHSA Division 2 State Playoffs back in May. Individually, Hatfield had a standout season, amassing 218 saves and a goals-against average of 8.7, placing him among the Top 10 goalies in Georgia, one of the most competitive states in the nation.

His achievements are even more significant considering he and the entire Hatfield family picked up stakes and moved to metro-Atlanta in the spring of 2025, smack in the middle of Miller’s sophomore year. The son of Trent and Melonee Hatfield, long-time Vestavia Hills residents and owners of Hatfield Auto Parts and Service, Miller Hatfield’s background is like that

of many local kids: he played a variety of sports, but he was introduced to lacrosse by a neighbor when he was eight years old. He got serious about the sport in middle school, starting as a goal-scoring attacker, but soon found his calling as a goalie, a position tasked with standing in the way of hard rubber balls traveling 70 to 90 miles per hour.

Miller thrived in the position, and he soon discovered it provided the opportunity to develop his leadership skills. “I stood out from the rest when I first got into being a goalie because I could easily handle the pain of getting hit by lacrosse balls,” Miller says, “and I prefer to play goalie because I like having an impact on the team, being a team leader.”

As he grew, Miller began to excel, competing with several Alabama-based club teams, and he was a member of the 2023 Vestavia Hills High School state championship team. However,

Miller’s eyes were opened to the quality of the teams and players from metro Atlanta after facing many of the area’s top clubs playing for Alabama-based travel teams.

Lacrosse is growing throughout the Birmingham area with several good teams—especially in Mountain Brook and Vestavia Hills—however, Atlanta’s lacrosse community has exploded in recent years, becoming a premier college recruiting hotbed. Miller acknowledges he wouldn’t be where he is without the instruction and support of his local coaches, such as Randy Nace, the head coach of Vestavia Hills varsity lacrosse team, who Miller says helped develop his skills as a goalie. However, he eventually realized the best option to improve his game and reach the next level was to high-tail it to Atlanta.

“When I first started playing for Vestavia, Randy Nace spent a lot of time training me even during the summer,” says Miller. “The people

there were great. Miller continues, “I thought the competition would be better in Atlanta,” adding that he had been impressed by many Atlantaarea players he’s come across in competitions all over the country. “I thought these guys have the skill set to play in college,” he says.

To help facilitate the move, Miller’s father, Trent, contacted David Stanton, the head coach of Hebron Christian Academy and a club coach the Hatfields had gotten to know over the years.

Before they could blink, the Hatfields relocated to nearby Decatur, Georgia, in March 2025, and Miller was suiting up for the Hebron Lions just a few of weeks later. “I reached out to (Stanton) to ask, ‘Do you need a goalie?’ He said, ‘yes, and the earlier the better,’” Trent Hatfield recalls.

“So in three weeks, we basically bought a house, packed up our lives, I found somebody to run our business for us and made the move.”

Stanton says Miller not only has the skills to be a high-level goalie, but at 6 feet, 1 inch and 175 pounds, he is a physical presence guarding the net. Moreover, Stanton was impressed with Miller’s leadership skills and emotional intelligence, especially after moving to a new city and state in the middle of his sophomore year.

“It was not easy to move over here, make friends, acclimate himself to the school and then come to practice early and stay late,” says Stanton. “Those are intangibles that Miller has. He’s a good kid first and foremost. He came over here to Hebron Christian Academy, and he acclimated extremely well. As a goalkeeper, he’s got good hands, quick feet. He’s developing that IQ. He just needs reps, and he’s getting that.”

This summer, Miller is balancing paying for his club team, the Decatur Ducks while making some recruiting trips as well, including a major showcase for high school players in Tinton Falls, New Jersey, in late June. At the moment, he is considering offers from the University of Montevallo and Jacksonville University in Jacksonville, Florida. He will also be one of only four seniors on the Hebron squad when the Georgia high school season begins in early 2027. OTMJ
