JENNIE LEE

Hugely acclaimed Yorkshire company Mikron Theatre present the extraordinary life of the radical MP you’ve never heard of. In 1929, Jennie Lee left her coal-mining family in Scotland to become Westminster’s youngest MP – so young that, as a woman, she couldn’t even vote for herself. Tenacious, bold and rebellious, Jennie cut her own path through history, believing that every person deserved their share of the fruits of the earth – for wages, health, and housing, and for art and education too. Her role in the foundation of the Open University and the expansion of the Arts Council aided Jennie’s fight for bread and roses, and in doing so, changed the twentieth century. Oh yes, and founder of the NHS Nye Bevan was her husband. But Jennie is no footnote in someone else’s past. Tell her story and say her name – this is the one, the only, Jennie Lee.

INTO THE MELTING POT Saturday 25th May 7:30pm £19 Spain, 1492. At twilight on her final night in Seville, a Jewish woman, played by Suzanne Ahmet (Casualty, Emmerdale), lights the lamps. She is being forced to leave Spain and set sail for an uncertain future. She tunes into voices of a community of Jewish, Christian and Muslim women from across the Spanish peninsula. Women’s stories of integration, love, racial intolerance and their rich cultural heritage are played out to a soundtrack of plaintive Sephardic songs and lively medieval music. Music and theatre collide in this fully staged show with stunning lighting from The Telling, award-winning writer Clare Norburn and BAFTAnominated director Nicholas Renton (Mrs Gaskell’s Wives and Daughters, Lewis, Musketeers). Be transported back to 15th century Seville!
