Oticon traces its roots back over 100 years to Hans Demant whose original goal was to help his wife Camilla, who suffered from hearing loss. Seeing the dramatic change in her and their personal life, they began a business venture to help others just like her. Since this simple beginning Oticon has become a world leader in hearing care, never losing sight of the goal of helping people.

Oticon operates the largest psycho acoustic research facility in the world. This facility, the Eriksholm Research Center’s mission is not to develop the latest technology – it is to work one-on-one with people wearing hearing instruments. Eriksholm operates independently from the Oticon headquarters to establish a network of international researchers and has become a respected knowledge center where leading experts can share and learn.

Core Technologies

Core Technologies Oticon has pioneered many core technologies. Among the most current advances that lay the foundation for modern hearing care are: • open fittings

Each of these core technologies was founded on our research and has given the hearing impaired a new sense of the world around them. These 4 technologies are intertwined and advancements in one area have led to the development of advancements in the others.

Open Fittings Open fittings overcome many of the drawbacks of earlier hearing instruments. They have virtually eliminated the occlusion effect, there is little distortion of one’s own voice, and more natural sounds are allowed to come through.

What allowed open fittings and specifically RITE instruments to be possible are advancements in feedback cancellation and a fast processing time.

Extended Bandwidth There are many benefits to providing a patient with a full spectrum of sound across the full bandwidth available to them.

Oticon’s hearing instruments are capable of delivering a full range of sound, up to 10,000 Hz. Beyond improved speech understanding, high frequency cues help with the localization of sounds in space. High frequency cues improve localization ability in the vertical plane. This can increase the perception of “spaciousness”.

Core Technologies

Binaural Processing hearing loss one ear at a time– treating each ear independently.

However the human auditory system relies on signals from each ear to work in a coordinated, harmonious way. Oticon’s advanced wireless ear-to-ear technology allows hearing devices to communicate with each other to help preserve subtle timing and loudness cues.

The Spatial Sound compression system helps preserve the localization cues and differences in ear-to-ear sound levels that naturally occur on either side of the head by processing the incoming auditory signals in a coordinated manner. The instruments’ Binaural Processing coordinates the automatic adaptive processing systems, not just programming.

Connectivity Having wireless capabilities at the core of the hearing instruments allows them to communicate with other devices via Streamer. Oticon’s Streamer communicates with the hearing instruments and via Bluetooth™ to external devices. Using Streamer, hearing instruments become wireless ear phones or a hands free Bluetooth headset. This allows anyone with virtually any type of loss to use a cell phone or enjoy TV again.

Speech Guard Speech Guard represents a revolutionary approach to signal processing. It maintains the dynamic characteristics of speech and other sound sources as much as possible using a new signal processing strategy. It maps the full range of the speech signal into the user’s remaining dynamic range, ensuring audibility while preserving the subtle modulation and temporal details of the speech signal.

Plug 1.0mm Basic Vents: Basic venting is used to reduce the occlusion effect that is often experienced by earmold users. We recommend at least a pressure vent on all applicable mold styles. A parallel vent is the factory default size permitting.

Pre-Bent Tubing: can be glued into the mold in hard materials. Soft materials cannot be glued. Canal Length & Helix Options: Full Length: Canal is made as long as the impression received.

Long: Canal is cut to just after the second bend of the canal.

Medium: Canal is cut between the first & second bend of the canal.

Short: Canal is cut just below the first bend of the canal.

Tapered: Tip of the canal is tapered (available on any length canal.)

Note: If no canal length option is selected the impressions will be cut based on the provided audiogram. The more severe the hearing loss the longer the canal length.

Helix Curl On: Helix area is full, with helix curl in place for maximum retention. Recommended for profound losses, where feedback and retention are a concern.

Helix Curl Off: Helix curl removed for easier insertion, helix area full for good retention.

Note: The Helix Curl Off option is the factory default if no other choice is indicated.

BTE Special Options Retention Ring: A special ring incorporated into the canal to aid retention. Not available on hard material.

L & R or Client Initials: You can have Left (L) and Right (R) engraved on the mold or your client’s initials. They will be placed on the helix or canal area of the mold. Some materials will be laser engraved and others will be tattooed on the material.

Red/Blue Canal Tips and Color Dots: These are designed to help your client easily recognize the difference between Right and Left molds. Red/Blue Canal Tips are available in: Lucite materials. Color Dots are available in: Lucite and Soft.

Removal String: A CIC style removal string can be added to all materials.

Oticon’s new RITE earmolds are designed to maximize cosmetics and maintain the comfort of an open fit. These new styles offer alternatives to better ensure retention for more difficult ears. When poor dexterity is a consideration some of these styles can also help.

Skeleton: This mold maximizes retention and insures a stable placement in the ear canal.

Power Mold: The power custom mold is shaped

like a canal instrument. Available in 3 skin tones, it is an excellent choice if the power dome is not selected. The RITE power speaker and mold come pre-assembled but can be assembled in your office.

Power Mold Lock: When the ear canal is very

straight a canal lock is strongly recommended at the time of ordering. Unless otherwise instructed, Oticon will automatically add a lock to secure proper retention.

What you should know about RITE venting Micro Mold Venting All RITE Ear Molds use straight tube vents as in traditional ear mold styles but they are shorter. As a result, the vent effect is greater than its actual diameter. For equivalent vent size see below. Genie prescribes the vent size when you select RITE Mold.

RITE Earmold Vents Custom molds also use tube shaped vents just like Micro Molds.

However, the vent is a little longer. Still the custom mold effect is greater than its actual diameter. Genie prescribes the vent size from X large to closed when RITE Mold is selected depending upon the audiogram.

You can change the vent size manually for Micro Mold and RITE molds in Genie by selecting the Fitting tab/Acoustics. In the help section you can check equivalent vent sizes “short” for Micro mold and “long” for RITE ear molds.

Venting and ITEs Q: What’s a collection vent, and why are they used in Oticon custom instruments and RITE molds? Are collection vents better than standard straight vents?

A. Collection vents are offered in all Oticon custom products and RITE molds. Collection vents are produced to be larger at the ear canal opening compared to the vent size provided in the faceplate, and might be regarded as horn-style vents. The size of the collection vent is determined by the diameter of the vent opening in the faceplate, although they bell out at the opening into the ear canal.

Q. Are collection vents better than standard straight vents?

A. This design provides the benefits of a larger, straight vent for reduced occlusion but less risk of feedback of the larger straight vent (the feedback risk is equivalent to a straight vent of the collection vent’s faceplate diameter). In addition, the use of collection vents makes it possible to produce a larger, more effective vent in the limited space available, especially in smaller instruments. So collection vents are more efficient with regards to cost (size) vs. benefit (reduction of occlusion).

Adding Canal Locks To Remakes • Oticon can use the impression on file when adding a canal lock for non-power RITE molds.

•A n impression is preferred when adding a canal lock to a power mold and a custom instrument.

Earmold Changes • To make a change in style for an earmold on a hearing aid order or to add/delete an earmold on a hearing aid order, please submit a Service Request through ROES. Wax Protection • NoWax System – For use with custom instruments, power RITE molds and RITE speakers.

• WaxStop (cerustop in ROES) – For use on RITE Micromolds and Power RITE speaker adapters.

• ProWax – For use with Intigai IIC, and can be retrofit to other custom aids.

Warranty Information • All earmolds come with a 180 day warranty against material or workmanship defects.

• One remake for fitting purposes will be provided at no charge for up to 180 days from the time of purchase.

Fitting RITE– Selecting Speaker Unit Length The speaker unit is available in five lengths and left/right versions. No. 1 is the shortest and no. 5 is the longest. The lengths most commonly used are size 2 and 3.

The goal is for the speaker to sit comfortably and hidden in the ear canal, for the wire to be flush with the skin.

Use the measuring tool to select the correct length of speaker unit. The correct length of speaker unit corresponds to the size-marking on the measurement tool that fits the top of the ear canal opening.

Power Power Custom Mold When fitting a Power Receiver with a Power Custom Mold, (Power Molds) select the next size up as the Receiver fits more centered in the ear canal.

For example if a #2 Receiver is measured order a #3.

For Power Domes measure the same way as for Standard Receivers.

Manipulating the Speaker Unit If the speaker unit is too long, the amplifier will sit too low on the ear and the microphones will not point in the right direction. Also the wire will not follow the helix nicely round behind the ear.

If the speaker unit is too short, the speaker will be difficult to place deep enough in the ear canal to get a secure hold and it may fall out.

If the wire is not flush with the skin, check that the insertion depth is correct. You may need to use another dome size if the speaker unit needs to move further in the ear canal.

• If the wire is still not flush, you might want to change the curve of the speaker unit to either straighten it a little or to change the insertion depth. This is not difficult, but the following steps are important to avoid damaging the speaker unit: • Use a hair dryer or spectacle instrument at low heat setting • Heat for a short time - a matter of seconds • Bend into desired shape and keep shape until wire is cooled off.

• Do not use excessive heat and do not exceed 130°C.

Choosing the correct size of Domes Use an otoscope to inspect the client’s ear canal to determine dome size. If the dome is too small, the speaker will not be securely positioned in the ear canal and it may also itch or tickle in the ear canal. If the dome is too big, it will be difficult to get deep enough into the ear canal or collapse in the ear canal and be uncomfortable to wear.

RITE mold The RITE mold is an acrylic custom solution that can be used instead of a dome. RITE molds are produced from a traditional, deep impression. The adaptor clearly indicates R/L color marking.

RITE molds use tube-shaped vents, as in traditional ear molds, but the length is shorter than standard vents.

Therefore, the RITE mold vent effect is much larger than its actual diameter. Genie prescribes the vent size, when RITE mold is selected, e.g. Large (short).

Attaching the RITE mold When fitting RITE devices with RITE molds follow the instructions below: 1 Find the correct speaker unit length and attach it to the amplifier (see Selecting Speaker Unit Length).

2 Carefully insert the receiver into the RITE mold and click the RITE mold on.

3 The RITE mold can rotate axially to ensure maximum comfort.

Before placing the RITE mold in the ear, turn the RITE mold until the up/down indicator points upwards.

Note: Make sure that the receiver is not angled when inserted into the RITE mold. An odd angle will prevent the speaker from engaging the adaptor. The click indicating that the speaker is placed correctly, should be made with only a little force. Don’t force the two units together!

Detaching the RITE mold The RITE mold can’t be detached from the receiver without the RITE mold tool.

When detaching the RITE mold follow the instructions to the right: 1 Remove the WaxStop. Place the RITE mold in the tool as illustrated making sure that the cross in the adaptor is matching the tap of the tool.

Working with Intigai FlexConnect Mini NEW

The new FlexConnect Mini programming strip is used to program Intigai. Do not use the regular Flex Connect, as the programming connection will be unreliable due to longer programming contacts.

The FlexConnect Mini is inserted behind the hinge of battery drawer.

Right Ear or Left Ear The Intigai will typically curve in the opposite direction compared to other canal instruments.

This is because the Intigai hugs the second bend rather than the first bend.

It is for this reason, the Intigai default colors are Red Transparent/right and Blue Transparent/left. The Black faceplate optimizes invisibility.

However if your client prefers, additional color choices are also available.

For easier insertion, a dot at the top of the shell assists the client in orientating the device.

3. If the instrument does not beep, return it to the middle of the neck loop, click Change Side icon 1 and click the same BEEP. Listen to the instrument again.

Streamer uses the digital EarStream technology to transmit real time audio directly to the instruments. The benefit is a 10 kHz undistorted, crystal clear audio signal. As a remote control your patient can adjust volume and change programs with the press of a button.

The Streamer also serves as a gateway between your patient’s hearing instruments and electronic devices such as Bluetoothenabled mobile phones or external audio sources. Streamer – How to get started Pairing Before Streamer can be used with your ConnectLine™ devices or a cell phone and music player, Streamer must be paired to these devices.

Set Streamer into pairing mode

Press and hold the Connect button for 5-7 seconds until the blue light flashes rapidly.

Turn on Bluetooth function

The Connect function must be active to ensure the wireless communication between Streamer and your audio sources.

After 2 seconds the blue light turns on, and after 5 seconds it flashes rapidly, which indicates the ­pairing mode.

Press the Connect button shortly.

The blue light turns on.

After a few seconds the blue light starts to pulsate and after half a minute it turns off again to save power.

Firmware 1.3 and up continues to pulse until keys are locked.

How to use with a cell phone Answer incoming phone calls

When your cell phone rings, you will see a blinking green light around the Phone button. You will also hear a tone in your hearing instruments.

Briefly press the Phone button to answer the call. The ring around the Phone button now lights solid green.

How to use with a land line phone Answer incoming phone calls

When your land line phone rings, you will see a blinking green light around the Phone button. You will also hear a tone in your hearing instruments.

Briefly press the Phone button to answer the call. The ring around the Phone button now lights solid green.

(Bluetooth function must be active – see “Turn on Bluetooth function”)

Hanging up the phone

When you wish to end the call, press the Phone button. The green light turns off and the call is ended.

Make a call

Use your land line phone to make the call. When the call goes through, press the Phone button on the Streamer, then talk into the Streamer.
