“Teach us to give

and not count the cost,” once stated St. Ignatius Loyola. I believe he was on to something real and the wisdom in this statement is not fully understood until we closely examine it.

Through charity we can help the needy and show goodwill to humanity in our own meager ways. It seems like a simple task to give to others without thinking about what we may get in return, but the truth is that it’s a little harder than we think. In today’s world it seems everyone is out for personal success, only thinking about me, myself and I. That doesn’t leave much room for anyone else, and this sobering fact can lead to radical personal changes. Seeing the need to aid others and the means we all have to do our little part is inspiring. Throughout this, the 2nd Annual Beauty of Charity issue, OTC Beauty Magazine shows ways you can join in charity efforts as a store owner and why it is beneficial to do so.

Not only will you gain a new sense of joy in lending a hand to your neighbors, but you will inadvertently influence your business beneficially.

This is not the main reason we encourage taking part in philanthropic initiatives, but simply an advantage.

By joining efforts to show the generosity of your heart you also show the community your caring side. This will flow into your business dealings and enable you to connect with others on a more personal level.

The glamour of giving will shine and before you know it you will notice you aren’t paying any mind to the costs, but simply giving to be helpful. It’s then that the true beauty of charity will be evident.

This month’s selling focus is...

charity motivation!

Aside from handling the regular day-to-day responsibilities of being a store owner, you can take an extra step to make your establishment well-rounded—getting involved with charity efforts. To further explain why this is a beneficial move, OTC Beauty Magazine asked industry professionals the following questions this month:

What are a few of the easiest ways beauty supply retailers can get involved and stay active with charities? Why would you recommend undertaking this responsibility?

“Albert Einstein stated, ‘It is every man’s obligation to put back into the world at least the equivalent of what he takes out of it.’ I have found that giving is an essential part of living. Many of us give for various reasons; some of us give because of our religious beliefs and some of us give out of guilt or obligation, but in reality we should give because it is simply the right thing to do. This becomes especially true when we are in the position to give.

Most beauty supply stores are entrenched in the black community, which is a community where so many have great needs. This entrenchment places the retailer in a very unique position that allows you to see firsthand why giving should be a part of your everyday experience.

That being said, let’s think about some ‘give back’ opportunities.

Organize a ‘Community Day.’ A community day will afford you the opportunity to be engaged with customers in a mutually beneficial

way. Your customers will now see you as the giver and not just the taker.

Another idea would be to offer scholarships to graduating high school seniors. We all know that education is a means for improving one’s standard of living.

Sports are an avenue that many in the community see as a means of getting out of their current circumstance. Therefore, supporting or sponsoring a basketball or football team is another way of giving back to the community. It has been proven that when you give you get 10 fold.

Even though the reason for giving should not be to receive something in return, it has been proven that the universe does give back what is given.

I challenge you to become more engaged with your customers and you will quickly discover where your talents, time or treasures will be needed. Giving empowers not only the receiver, but also the giver.

espite being around for thousands of years, many beauty consumers don’t even know it exists, much less how many uses it has. After all, consumers probably feel more excited about using a product that feels like a luxurious spa experience rather than a cooking demonstration. Raw cocoa butter looks like an ingredient used to make chocolate fondue (partly because in a manner of speaking, it is). It’s a stable fat rich in antioxidants and emollients and cheaply obtained in solid, unaltered form, making it a perfect option for beauty supply owners looking to cater to customers seeking more organic forms of moisturizer.

Cocoa butter comes from the same place that chocolate bars come from: the cacao bean. It’s a byproduct of the chocolate-making process that could just as easily be combined with other ingredients to make white or milk chocolate. It was an employee of the Ghirardelli Chocolate factory that discovered that cocoa butter is what drips away when a bag of ground cacao beans is hung in a warm environment (the remaining product in the bag is turned into cocoa powder), a practice called the Broma process.

When the dripping butter solidifies, it turns opaque pale yellow. At this point, the butter is considered pure and unrefined. If it is further processed by removing the color and scent, it is considered refined; the color and scent of the final product depends on how much refinement takes place.

Before this discovery in 1865, the Mayans became aware of the power of the cacao bean, so much so that they even wrote the cacao tree into their creation story. They drank it, ate it, gifted it and generally held it in very high regard. Cocoa butter as a cosmetic originates in Africa, where it was used to keep skin moisturized, and it’s been popular within the African-American community ever since.

In its raw, unrefined form, cocoa butter is a dry solid, not greasy at all, which helps with quick absorption into the skin. Many other moisturizers leave an oily film that is supposed to be moisturizing; cocoa butter’s dry quality allows it to leave skin feeling fresh, light, yet still nourished. It stays solid at room temperature but melts at body temperature, making it ideal as a solid moisturizer. For it to be spreadable within a lotion at room temperature, it must be combined, often in miniscule amounts, with other butters, oils and emulsifiers to create a finished product. In other words, if it comes in a pump the product likely contains a negligible amount of cocoa butter.

Luckily, there are cocoa butter sticks available that are 100% pure cocoa butter and melt on contact with skin, making it very easy for application as a lip balm, eye moisturizer, spot treatment for hyperpigmentation and dry areas all over the body. Unfortunately pure cocoa butter is just too rich – and often pore-clogging – for most people to use on the face; only those with extremely dry skin should attempt to use the pure solid as an all-over facial moisturizer.

One of the reasons cocoa butter is so popular is because only those with sensitivities to chocolate or nuts have had allergic reactions to it. Every person is different, of course, but the likelihood of customers having a reaction to cocoa butter is extremely low, making it safe for

Finished Product most people to use. Soaps containing cocoa butter, depending on the specific formulation, have a slim chance of causing contact dermatitis or irritation, widening its appeal to those with even the most sensitive of skin, including babies and children.

It is impossible to talk about cocoa butter without talking about its inextricable connection to stretch marks and/or scars. Though it has been said for decades that cocoa butter helps fade scars, there are no solid scientific studies that definitively prove this. In fact, in a study done by the American University of Beirut Medical Center, there was no discernible difference between stretch marks treated with cocoa butter and with a placebo. Still, many people swear it was cocoa butter that softened, if not all together eliminated, the appearance of their stretch marks. As with any pervasive beauty claim, take it with a grain of salt.

Still, cocoa butter has many other benefits that have nothing to do with making scars disappear. It’s popular as a hair moisturizer for African American women who seek a more natural way of adding oils to their hair without weighing it down, especially for women who are moving away from wigs and weaves towards growing out their own natural hair. Even for women with finer textured hair, it can be used as a styling aid to keep hair in place, smooth down fly-aways, or as a deepconditioning treatment. Hair products are the easiest to work with in pomade or cream form, not solid. Therefore, be sure that cocoa butter is high up enough on the ingredient list that there will be noticeable results.

It’s also a very popular ingredient in hand and body lotions, body butters, eye creams, face moisturizers and many other topical moisturizing creams. It even makes appearances in bath products; in its solid form, it melts in the hot water of the tub, surrounding the skin with soothing emollients when the skin is most receptive to absorbing moisture. Along with avoiding dry skin and hair, cocoa butter also serves as an excellent moisturizer for nails. Massaging cuticles with cocoa butter a few times a day is key to growing long, strong, hangnail-free nails. It’s also an excellent base for a body scrub since it nourishes the skin while sloughing away dead skin cells.

If you choose to stock solid cocoa butter in your store, be sure to store it out of direct sunlight or heat, as it will melt. If it melts and then re-solidifies too slowly it will crystallize. The crystals will not affect the product, but some customers may consider it off-putting and be dissatisfied with the texture.

As consumers become more aware of what goes into the beauty products they use, the trend towards buying products that contain recognizable ingredients with proven results grows. Cocoa butter is something that many women report growing up using, especially in pure forms, in addition to other naturally derived butters. Making sure that cocoa butter is sufficiently present in products claiming to contain it will help drive sales from customers looking for more eco-friendly, familiar moisturizing sources.

코코아버터는 핸드와 바디 로션, 바디 버터, 아이크림, 얼굴 모이스처라이저, 그리고 많은 모이스처라이징 크림에 매우 인기 있는 성분으로 사용되고 있다. 또한 목욕 용품에서도 모습을 나타내고 있다. 고체 형태의 제품은 욕조의 뜨거운 물에 녹아 피부를 감싸주는 피부 연화제작용을 하며 피부에 빠르게 흡수된다. 코코아버터는 피부와 모발 이외에 손톱 모이스처라이저로도 사용된다. 코코아버터로 하루에 몇 번씩 큐티클(cuticle)을 마사지해주면 길고 강한 손톱을 기를 수 있다. 또한, 굳은살을 벗겨내고, 피부에 영양을 주기 때문에 바디 스크럽(body scrub)의 기초로도 매우 훌륭한 역할을 하고 있다. 고체형태의 코코아버터 제품을 취급하려 한다면, 녹는 것을 막기 위해 직사광선이나 열로부터 멀리해야 한다. 만약 제품이 녹은 다음 너무 천천히 굳게 되면, 결정체를 만들게 된다. 이러한 결정체는 제품에 영향을 미치지는 않지만, 일부 소비자들은 이를 찝찝해하며 불만을 토로하게 된다.

here is a growing financial trend toward natural hair care products.

Many top industry manufacturers report that they have seen a decline in relaxer sales over the past three years and a glance at any consumer magazine or a stroll through any beauty supply store will reveal an emergence of products geared toward natural hair care. Many major hair care manufacturers have developed new lines to meet the needs of this growing trend and secure their ride on the lucrative new wave that has hit the industry.

This is a significant shift in the world of hair care that boasts sales of over nine billion dollars worldwide.

This comes as no surprise to manufacturers that are well trenched in the natural hair care spectrum according to the president of Professional Products Unlimited, Inc., Cyrus Jackson. “We always knew this trend would firmly take root in the industry.

That is why we pioneered the natural hair care category over ten years ago, sowing seeds into an industry that finally recognizes the value in servicing the full spectrum of ethnic hair care,” Jackson said.

“I cannot tell you how many buyers looked at me sideways when I told them about our new product line,” Jackson lamented on his experiences several years ago, when he first introduced Jamaican Mango & Lime natural hair care products to the market. “I have been in this business for over 30 years and I can tell you that they did not believe that natural hair care would grow as a category.” He laughed 32

The rise in natural hair care products can be partially contributed to popular culture, but many salons report that an even more significant factor is the conscious effort of ethnic women toward healthy hair and products that do not contain harsh chemicals.

Women still buy relaxers, but they are now having doubts about the effects of foreign ingredients that are so powerful they often burn the scalp and cause damage to already traditionally weakened tresses.

Hair straightening is a process that in recent years has gone from lye and sodium hydroxide to the application of formaldehyde to the hair to achieve the straighter looks. The natural hair care trend speaks to the need for more options and versatility in ethnic hair care. There are many more styles and versatility in the world of natural hair care than ever before and the growing business of weaves and bonding is also married to the natural hair care category. Over 87 percent of women that wear weaves report that they have grown out their relaxer and wear their hair completely natural under their extensions. This gives women with ethnic hair types even more incentive to seek other options than the older relaxer methods.

“Let the curlers and flat iron burn through this Indi and not my real hair!” Chantel Ware, a local college student from the Atlanta University Center said. “My hair is completely natural and I use natural products to treat and style my real hair. Every once in a while I’ll get a sew in for a special occasion, but there are so many new natural styles to choose from I don’t even need a relaxer anymore.”

Many natural hair products do not use harsh chemicals but rely on new industry innovations like the naturally occurring agent Cysteine to temporarily reshape the hair strand and soften the hair for more style and manageability. The new formulas are based on proteins already found in the natural makeup of the hair rather than corrosive chemicals that have been used on the hair and scalp for years. These products are also convenient for women to use. They can easily style natural hair once it is detangled and softened or still maintain straight or curly styles with the health and benefits of natural hair, and they finally do not have to make the “big chop” to return their hair to its natural state.

This is a message that is resonating with consumers in the ethnic market and it seems that they are not the only ones in transition. Every beauty salon, beauty supply and hair care manufacturer would be remiss not to heed the call and develop products for this growing hair care category.

The Advantages of

a Stove Heated Curling Iron over an Electrically Heated Iron 스토브아이언이 전기아이언보다 좋은 점

T

he electric curling iron is exothermic, or heated from the inside out. On the other hand, the stove heated iron is endothermic, meaning that it is heated from the outside in. The electric iron has a heating element located on the inside of the curling pin handle and the outer surface is indirectly heated. The stove heated iron is heated by being placed in a stove (or oven) designed for this purpose; this is direct heat. Indirect heat means that the surface of the iron did not come into contact with its heating source. Direct heat means that the surface that comes into direct contact with the hair also came into direct contact with its heating source.

The heating element in an electric iron can burn out in a much shorter time then a stove heater. The maximum life span of an electric iron when used professionally on an everyday basis is one year or less. The lifetime of a stove heated iron and stove under identical usage is indefinite. On a purely economical basis, the stove heated iron is much more practical. There are many more advantages of the stove heated iron, and they are as follows: 36

2. There are many more sizes and types to choose from. There are more then 30 choices of size and type of stove heated irons compared to less than 12 electric iron choices.

3. Even though both irons may measure the same temperature, the stove type will be a much more intense heat and will maintain that heat longer. (This is due to its direct heating quality.)

4. The metal surface of the electric iron is three to five times thinner than that of the stove heated type. Therefore it cannot withstand as much heat before melting or losing its shape.

5. Due to the fact shown in no. 4 above, the stove type iron can be heated to whatever degree needed to curl extremely course or hard to manage hair.

6. Most electric curling irons have the heating element directed to the pin only, so that is where the heat is concentrated. The pin and the shell of the stove heated iron get equal access to the heat so that both sides of a strand can be curled at equal heat.

7. The stove headed irons use much less electricity when several irons are being used at the same time. A stove heater uses less electricity then two electric curling irons no matter how many irons are involved.

8. The stove heated Marcel irons will outlast the electric curling irons because they are made of much thicker carbon dated steel.

The electric irons outer surface is of a much thinner metal and therefore cannot withstand high heat levels for as long as stove heated irons. Also, the electrical components can burn or short out in a short period of time compared to the longevity of the stove heated irons, especially when used professionally on a daily bases.

All the above information is an understandable argument to support the need of the stove type iron to be marketed to the general market and not just primarily to the ethnic consumer. This will automatically create increase demands for the stoves and will open the way to treble the number of Beauty Supply outlets to meet the demand for both the stove and the irons.

The stove heated irons have been in wide use by black cosmetologist going back to the 1920’s and are still the iron of choice for many. The main reason is because most (if not all) electric irons can not reach or maintain the heat required to curl virgin afro hair. This is due to the fact that most virgin afro hair has twice as many over lapping cuticle scales then most straight hair, therefore it requires more heat to do the expected without causing damage to the hair.

There are many choices of brands of stoves and stove heated curling irons to choose from. Some have features that are very appealing and others have features that are more practical.

The preceding information should serve as a guide when the need to replace equipment comes about.

I

n the first of this two-part series we began to review some of the key opinion leaders in the black community. They are its educators and scholars. In this second part we focus on more significant leaders, though we have only begun to touch the surface as more and more African Americans are putting a premium on education.

Retailers, marketers and manufacturers should become better acquainted with these leaders because they are key shapers of African American culture and ideals. Purchasing behavior is shaped by culture. Knowing this ahead of time can mean increased sales and more customers.

Some of these scholars like Christine Ferris and Robert Franklin started out at Historically Black Universities (HBCUs) like Spelman College for women and Morehouse College for men (both in Atlanta) and picked up degrees from other institutions before returning to their first HBCU to themselves become educators. Others including Ben Carson and. Lani Guinier were educated at Ivy League colleges (Yale and Radcliffe) and have starred in professional and educational careers.

Several educators including Jackson Fleming and Paul Cunningham have focused on mentoring urban and at-risk youth and have been asked to speak for the Feeding Dreams program sponsored

by General Mills which is sponsoring an outreach to black beauty salons, barber shops and churches (www.feedingdreams.com). Whatever their academic background, the collection of B.A.s, M.A.s, Ph.D.s, law and medical degrees among the group below is impressive indeed.

t has been my experience that organizations that have a commitment to go above and beyond just selling products do so for a very good reason. It’s called a corporate soul and social responsibility. There are many brands that have had lots of success by creating great packaging, a great story and products that do not really outperform any other products in their set. In the past, print advertising, radio and TV were really the only options to attract your customer and convey what you were selling and what your company represented. None of these advertising vehicles allowed brands to interact with their customers. Today, as a result of the Internet the most powerful tool of the 21st century has been born and it’s called social media.

Social media allows a company with a conscience and social responsibility to have a voice. It also allows a brand for the first time to personally interact with their customer. It’s a great opportunity for brands to find out more about what their customer wants and needs. Most importantly, it gives them a great opportunity to build a relationship with their customer and reinforce their corporate soul and what they believe in. Social media puts a face on the brand. If going forward companies don’t develop a brand that is social media friendly, they are not going to have the same marketing and growth opportunities as those who do.

Why is this important to a retailer to work with companies that have a philanthropic commitment? Here’s why. If you just fill your shelves with products that are marketed by companies that do not have a special interest in giving back to the community, they are probably less inclined to support or give back to the retailer. If you notice lately, there are many small brands that have emerged without the capital and resources that many larger and well established brands have. How did that happen? It happened through their personal commitment, passion and interest in interacting with their customers.

The bottom line is, if you don’t have anything to talk about on social media sites, it probably because your company doesn’t have a strong enough corporate ‘soul’ or mission—you are missing an opportunity to reach your customer. As a retailer, if you choose to do business with multiple brands, I suggest that you choose companies that have something to say to their customers and that are not afraid to contribute or give back to community or world causes. When a manufacturer engages a customer and builds their trust and respect, retailers benefit from all of their marketing efforts done through social media and other advertising mediums.

Many companies work hard to create great branding, distribution and quality products. If you want to know who they are, I suggest you surf the Web for their sites. You will get a great sense of who they are by reviews and comments about product performance unsolicited by their customers. More importantly, you will get a great sense of what their philanthropic interests are. Companies that contribute to organizations that “make the world a better place” find events and organizations that they can align with to make a difference. Most brands contribute to a cause that their customer base would also contribute to. Consumers appreciate that they are doing business with a company or brand that donates to an organization that helps the planet become a better place. After all, we all like to support organizations that make us feel like every dollar we spend with them supports a cause in need. Doing business with a company that is generous and socially responsible enough to contribute is the one that will win in the eyes of the consumer versus a company that has a huge advertising budget and doesn’t contribute anything to a cause. I have also found that the leadership of these types of companies is more willing to make personal appearances to events and operate with a level of transparency.

Generally because they are so connected to their consumer base, they are more willing to create consumer-friendly events for their retailers where invites can be blasted out through social media campaigns.

So if you’re a retailer, how do you build your corporate soul? Begin by taking a long walk around your community, your company and your life.

Decide what you want your customer to feel and know about your store. Who are your customers and what is important to them? It may be something very simple like choosing to contribute to a local orphanage. If you’re a beauty store, you could take all of your products that you can’t sell because they are damaged and donate them to a woman’s shelter. It’s a great human gesture as well a great opportunity to have the local press write about your store. Every good deed to help someone makes a difference. Once you make a commitment to making a difference by contributing, you will pay closer attention to who you create strategic business relationships with. Creating a brand or store with the integrity to be socially responsible and give back will always yield a great return. In giving you will always reap the rewards of receiving.

e find that the definition of philanthropic means the concern for human welfare and advancement, usually manifested by donations of money, property or work to needy persons. It is basically the art of giving back to your community, but it’s not always easy for small businesses to give back to their communities. Owners and their employees are often short on time and low on funds. However, there are meaningful ways to give back that do not involve shelling out lots of money or spending days working on pro bono projects. Here are some ideas.

Organize an employee volunteer day. You might lose a day of

productivity, but coordinating a day or two each year when employees can volunteer together— perhaps to build a Habitat for Humanity house or cook for a homeless shelter—can be more cost-effective than writing a check. Bonus: Group activities outside the office often boost morale and camaraderie.

Keep the change. Customers might not have any

spare change, so why not offer them other ways to give? Ask each customer if they want to round up their purchase (or donate a specific amount) to donate to a community cause or charity. You can announce storewide events, where during certain times—say, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.—a certain percentage of sales goes to a local charity. Bonus idea: Advertise that your business will match every contribution.

Get on a nonprofit board. Offer your business or

industry expertise to a local nonprofit by sitting on their board.

This way your contribution can be time (after work hours) and not money.

Create a contest. Ask other small businesses to compete with your business in a donations race. The company that raises the most money through their employees (partners and friends) wins the contest. Collectively, you’ll be able to donate more to a local charity.

The Professional Beauty Association has their own theories as to why these extensions have grown in popularity. The fact that they are new, different and multifaceted makes them extremely marketable and appealing to women and girls of all ages.

They speak to fashionistas everywhere who are trying to oomph up their style and for this reason business is booming. However, there are a few people who are a little worried about the consequences of this growth.

Fishermen. Yes, you read that correctly, fishermen have reason to be alarmed at this growing beauty trend and their concerns stem from where the feathers come from. Ornamental Asian roosters produce the feathers made to create these products and they had been used for fishing lure long before the hair accessory craze set in. Seeing how these sportsmen are longstanding customers of these rooster farmers, this creates a dilemma for all parties involved. The demand for the feathers has now dramatically increased with both lure-needing men and fashionforward hairstylists fighting for access to their supplies and farmers are fighting to keep up supply-wise. With so much attention being placed on the roosters and their ability to produce feathers at a set rate, what is a farmer to do? We do not have the answer to that, but we do know what you as a store owner can learn from this predicament.

Time Out

The importance of supply and demand; honestly, it’s a concept that all business owners need to understand and it can help you run your business effectively. The greater the demand for a product, the more business you will receive for that item. The lower the demand, the less traffic will go down that aisle, but don’t be concerned—it’s all a part of the game. Also, keep in mind that there are products ingredients, like the feathers in the aforementioned extensions, which have differing motives within the industry. They could be as drastically different as fishing lures and hair extensions, but they are all fighting for the same outcome: sales. For this reason prices could increase, but if the demand is high sales will remain steady. The key to staying ahead of the competition is ensuring that your store carries the hottest products that everyone just “has to have” while the demand is high.

Speaking of the hottest trends, it is beneficial to be mindful of what the intended forecast for the next coming years is in reference to the U.S. beauty industry. In the “Beauty Industry 2010 Review and 2011 Outlook” professionals at the Demeter Group compiled research to breakdown a few outlooks and trends that will spill into the coming years.

(It didn’t mention hair color, but looks like the feather extension businesses hit this nail on the head.) Hair smoothing and de-frizzing systems are projected to continue to become typical and hair extensions will keep being used widely, providing women with an easy way to gain volume and length.

Don’t worry about men customers, they haven’t been forgotten. The Demeter Group also noted “small increases from branded products for men, mainly shower gels and cleansers,” in the future. Facial anti-agers are not surprisingly also going to continue in popularity as the urge to look younger always remains.

Statistics show that Georgia is the ninth state in pediatric AIDS cases in the U.S with the fifth highest rate of AIDS cases per 100,000 people for cases reported in 2001. Out of over 500 AIDS organizations in Georgia, there are only 13 that focus on children with HIV/AIDS. “Foundations such as Show Me the Way are unique and special because a cumulative total of 14 million children in the world have lost their mothers or both parents to AIDS (UNAIDS) and we focus many of our efforts on serving this specific demographic,” states Show Me the Way Foundation president/founder Tashawnya Menefee.

시피 여기서 말하는 ‘숲’ 이란 의미는 ‘전체적인 시각’을 뜻하는 것이다. 이러한 시각을 갖는 것 역시, 쉬운 일은 아니다. ‘숲’, 즉, 전체적인 시각을 갖기 위해서는 나무 하나하나에 대한 해박한 지식이 없다면 불가능한 일이다. 개체를 알고 있어야 전체적인 것을 볼 수 있는 안목이 생기는 것이다. 뿐만 아니라 대범 해질 수 있는, 소위 말하는 ‘대인배’ 적인 성격도 가지고 있어야 한다. 사사로운 것에 매달려 있다면, 전 체적인 것을 보지 못하게 되기 때문이다. 이번에 OTC에서 인터뷰한 조지아 주의 사바나에 위치한 Fashion Tree 의 Andrew Yoo 사장은 남들 보다 조금 넓은 시각을 가지고 전체적인 그림을 보려 노력하는 사람 중 하나이다. 이번 인터뷰를 통해 좀더 높은 곳에서의 시선을 가져 보도록 하자.

장기적인 마케팅 계획, 라디오 광고? 적지 않은 스토어들이 라디오 광고를 한번쯤은 해 보았을 것이 다. 하지만 라디오 광고를 해봤던 대부분의 오너들은 시원치 않 은 반응을 보인다. 그 이유로, 상대적으로 비싼 가격에 반해 즉각 적인 반응이 오지 않기 때문이다. 하지만 유사장은 조금 다른 생 각을 가지고 있었다. “라디오 광고는 많이 했었고, 앞으로도 할 생각입니다. 물론, 라디오 광고라는 것이 바로 결과를 만들어내 는 것은 아니지만, 사람들이 여러 번 듣다 보면 광고 문구가 머릿 속에 남게 될 것이고, 장기적으로 보면 반드시 효과가 있다고 생 각 합니다. 그리고 단순한 판매를 떠나 스토어 이미지를 부각시 키는 효과는 확실히 있다고 생각 합니다. 그러한 이미지를 하루 하루 쌓아가다 보면 나중에는 반드시 차이가 나게 될 것입니다”. 사실 이미지 광고는 주로 대기업들이 하고 있는 형태의 광고이 다. 조금 더 많은 사람들에게 그들의 좋은 이미지를 심어주기 위 한 것이다. 하지만, 지역 광고라는 특성을 보면, 라디오 광고가 제품의 판매 및 스토어의 이미지를 구축하는데 한 몫을 한다고 볼 수 있을 것이다. 그 이유로는, 라디오에서 들었던 스토어를 차 를 타고 지나가면서 직접 눈으로 볼 수 있기 때문에 그들의 머릿 속에 더욱 더 각인되기 때문일 것이다. 물론, 앞에서 말했듯이 즉 각적인 반응이 있는 것은 아니지만, 스토어에 대해 고객들 자신 도 모르는 친숙함이 생기는 것은 분명할 것이다.

유사장은 어려서부터 비즈니스를 시작한 탓인지, 비즈 니스에 관해서는 나이에 비해 원숙한 생각들을 가지고 있었다. 하지만 “일을 하다 보니 시기를 좀 놓친 것 같습니다” 라는 유사 장은 정작 자신은 싱글 이라고 밝히며 쑥스러운 표정을 지어 보 였다. 유사장은 마지막으로 “경쟁 사회에서 서로간의 경쟁은 당 연한 것입니다. 각자의 스타일을 살려 공정한 경쟁을 하는 것이 건강한 비즈니스를 만들 것이고, 건강한 경쟁은 서로의 발전을 만들어 가는 힘이 될 것입니다. 모든 동 업종 스토어 오너들이 고 생하신 만큼 성공을 하였으면 좋겠습니다” 라며 인터뷰를 마쳤 다.

Sanitizing tools, equipment and surfaces in the beauty business is big business. It is also a big concern for many salon clients and beauty professionals.

In classes and presentations I frequently offer the suggestion to “get caught sanitizing.” That is to say make sanitizing practices highly visible to your customers.

Help your customers to get caught sanitizing in their shops and salons. It is good for business and bad for bacteria.

1. Stock a wide range of top quality sanitizing products – Your offerings should range from wet sanitizer liquids to dry fumigant tablets.

2. Offer the accessories – Implement trays, jars, measuring and mixing containers are needed to properly dilute and use sanitizing liquids.

3. Pass out the printed materials – All of your manufacturer partners who sell sanitizing products and accessories have literature, MSD sheets and how-to instructions. Have these on hand and share them with customers.

Saving the Planet One Tweet at a Time Most manufacturers are committed to their many stakeholders—employees, investors, consumers—to be a good corporate citizen. As a retailer, you are automatically a community citizen. Saving the planet goes beyond making donations or buying cookies. Cause-related programs involve aligning brands and retailers. The objective is to generate business and create social benefits. Whatever the cause, consumers want to contribute both locally and globally. There is an evangelism to contribute to a positive future or to cure a health crisis or disaster. Traditional retail programs can generate periodic sales spikes. Relevant long-term engagement creates relationships. Social media efficiently connects the manufacturer, the OTC retailer and the consumer.

Social media programs can be product-related or target-related. Makeovers for the disadvantaged, scholarships for hairstylists, Back to School incentives…there are many ways to engage in charitable contributions. There could be a percentage of a sale donated to a specific cause. Websites allow consumers to choose their cause or charity and retailers and manufacturers can be linked to their purchase electronically. Statistics show that consumers want to contribute in an effortless way—pre-established, electronic and ongoing.

Take direction from the local news. A tie in to literacy, obesity, education and empowerment would be optimal. A support program to contribute to their efforts would also be ideal. Explore opportunities through social media. Be a “Friend,” “Tweet” your “Likes” and “Poke” key manufacturers into linking with you and your mutual consumers. Contributing to the community and the planet will pay off.

Against The Grain Who’s First?

Who is the most important customer in your business? You might say it is anyone who walks through the door. Well, actually it is the business itself and next it is the customer who actually buys from you. How well do you know your customers and why do you think they purchase from you? There really isn’t any other

place like it. In this one town visitors and locals alike can travel around the world; Paris, Italy, Rome and New York are all found together in this city that indeed never sleeps. Not only can one explore the cultures of the world here, but on July 31 – August 2, attendees also discovered the newest trends and products of the beauty industry at Cosmoprof North America (CPNA) 2011.

Housing 750 exhibitors from over 30 countries, this weekendlong convention was full of education and business as manufacturers, buyers and other beauty industry professionals trudged the floor aisles, finding solutions to all their beauty needs. The Mandalay Bay Convention Center housed this 9th annual gathering which has grown to be the premiere business-to-business beauty event. Although many exhibitors were veterans of the game, there were manufacturers who were a little green in the ways of the trade show industry. For this group of companies, CPNA presented an initiative called Emerging Beauty that allowed new entrepreneurs to get their first taste of the show business opportunities while presenting a fresh selection of ideas and products.

Among the many products being introduced were a few from fashion-forward retailers that had yet to be seen before. CPNA’s own Discover Beauty Program catered to these brands, showcasing a line of emerging products that are sure to take the industry by storm. Matching 90

leading retailers with up-and-coming beauty and skin care brands, this program is the only one of its kind in the U.S. With both domestic and international products being presented, this program once again proved that you really can go anywhere in the world, just by walking around this Nevada map dot. Aiding in this journey was the International Buyer Program, helping those from the global beauty industry come together for a successful event.

Staying up with tech-savvy times, a plethora of live, viral communication was made available. From the Fashion Institute of Technology Trend Scout Program which kept attendees and fans connected with product launches to bloggers, online media reporting and Foursquare availability, there isn’t much electronic social marketing ground CPNA hasn’t reached.

After three days of walking through rows of booths, making business deals and discovering new products, attendees packed their bags and left with more than sore feet. They took with them an appreciation for the regal venue, knowledge on beauty trends on the rise and business ideas to develop further upon their return to their offices. If they chose to visit the casinos, maybe they were lucky and left with a few extra dollars to spend later instead of losing them. Regardless, as for the aforementioned carry-on additions, there is no way to lose that.

독신남, 결혼남 보다 16년 일찍 죽을 수 있다

추론, 사고력 등 뇌의 능력이 22살 때 최 고조에 이른 뒤 27살 때부터 쇠퇴하기 시 작한다는 연구결과가 나왔다. 기억력은 37살 때까지 유지되는 것으로 나타났다. 미국 버지니아 대학 연구팀은 18~60세 의 건강한 성인 2천명을 대상으로 7년간 연구한 결과를 노화신경생물학 저널에 발 표했다. 연구진은 사고력이 얼마나 민첩 한 지를 측정하기 위해 조사 대상자들에 게 퍼즐을 풀고 단어를 기억하게 하고 스 토리를 말하게 하고 문자 등에서 특징을 골라내게 했다. 이는 치매의 징조를 알아 내기 위해 사용되는 방식이다. 그 결과 12 명 가운데 9명꼴에서 22살 때 가장 높은 점수가 나왔다. 추론 능력, 생각하는 속 도, 시각적인 퍼즐 해결 능력 등에서 쇠 퇴가 시작되는 첫 번째 시점은 27살로 나

세상에서 가장 무서운 생 물 Top 10 1위 모기(mosquito). 세계에서 가장 치명 적인 생물로 불린다. 작고 가벼운 곤충이 지만 만만하 게 봐서는 안 된다. 해마다 수백만 명의 목숨을 앗아 가는 주범이 다. 모기는 말 라리아(학질 또는 학이라 불리는 전염성 질환), 뎅기열(고열을 동반하는 급성 열성 질환), 웨스트 나일 바이러스(심한 두통을 일으키는 의식장애)와 같은 질병을 전염시 킨다. 이로 인해 매년 300만 명이 목숨을 잃는다. ‘동물의 제왕’ 사자를 물리치고 가 장 무서운 생물 1위에 오를 수 밖에 없었 던 이유다.

4위 백상어 (Great White Shark). 1975년 개봉한 영화 ‘죠스’를 보셨다면 누구나 아 는 바다 속 무법자 상어. 입 안 가득 면도 날과 같은 날카로운 이빨 3000여 개를 지 닌 상어는 물었다 하면 톱날처럼 모든 것을 잘라낸다. 물 속 엄청난 거리에서도 피 냄 새만 맡았다 하면 순식간에 찾아온다고 한 다. 상어에게 치명적인 공격을 당할 가능 성은 복권 당첨 확률처럼 매우 낮지만 절 대 간과해서는 안 된다고.

5위 사자 (African Lion). 큰 송곳니, 날 카로운 발톱, 재빠른 움직임. 사냥에 필요 한 모든 것을 갖춘 고양이과로 동물의 제왕 이라 불리는 아프리카 초원의 사냥꾼이다. 닥치는대로 먹어 치우는 무시무시한 식성 덕분에 사자만 나타나면 사람이고 동물이 고 모두 긴장하며 도망치는 것이 순리라고 한다. 1898년엔 사자 한 쌍이 케냐에서 철 도 작업을 하던 135명의 인간을 해치우는 끔찍한 사건이 일어나기도 했다. 이는 영 2위 코브라 (Asian Cobra). 뱀 중에서도 화로도 제작됐다 가장 강력한 독을 내뿜는 것으로 유명한 코브라. 연간 5만 명 이상이 이 코브라의 6위 악어 (Australian Swater Crocodile). 독성에 의해 숨진다는 사실을 알고 계셨는 악어는 크로커다일과 엘리게이터, 두 종류 지. 코브라의 독에 노출될 경우 코끼리가 3 로 나뉜다. 그 중 크로커다일 종은 한번 물 시간 안에 목숨을 잃을뿐더러 성인의 경우 면 절대 놓지 않는 입구조를 갖고 있다. 이 15분 만에 사망할 수 있다. 빨이 서로 맞물려 있기 때문이다. 오스트 3위 박스 해파리 (Box jellyfish). 둥그런 공 모양의 박스 해파리는 24개의 눈과 60여 개의 촉수를 가지고 있다. 각 촉수는 5000 개의 연속된 독 세포로 이루어져 있는데 이 는 성인 남자 수십 명을 가뿐히 죽일 정도

라고 한다. 이 독성에 노출될 경우 심장 마 비, 신경계 마비, 피부병 등의 증상이 온 다. 일반 해안가에서도 자주 등장하는 이 해파리는 해수욕을 즐기는 사람들에게 큰 피해를 주며 일부는 이로 인해 사망하기도 한다.

8위 북극곰 (Polar Bear). 역시 의외의 동 물이다. 귀여운 이미지로 각종 광고 모델 로도 등장하는 북극곰은 사실 아주 위험한 동물 중 하나다. 1500파운드(약 680㎏)의 몸집에 2인치 길이의 발톱을 지니고 있는

데 이 발톱은 아주 날카로워 한번 할퀴면 끔직한 사태가 일어난다. 바다 표범, 바다 코끼리 등 자신의 몸집과 비슷한 동물들도 거뜬하게 해치운다. 다행히 사람이 살기 힘든 극지방에 서식하기 때문에 인간을 공 격하는 경우는 매우 드물다.

영국소녀, 한국어 발음 잘하 고 싶어 혀 수술
