ail care is nothing to be afraid of. I’ve found that since joining OTC Beauty Magazine, I spend a lot more time in beauty supply stores not only shopping for things that I need, but also looking around and taking inventory of the merchandise in general. One area that always piques my interest in stores is the nail care area. While I understand that some locations just don’t have the room for such an area and rightfully so would like to devote their square footage to hair-related items, I’m always surprised when larger stores don’t have one. Some consumers find caring for their own nails to be a relaxing “do-it-yourself ” experience. Personally, I cannot remember the last time I had my nails done professionally. There is something relaxing about doing my own manicure or pedicure, using my own tools and polishing at my own speed using whatever color combination I choose. Try feeding into this same desire with your own customers.

Setting up a nail care area doesn’t need to be an experiment in rocket science. Manufacturers provide displays that make merchandising nail care items a snap. They release entire color collections to help satisfy the preferences of even the pickiest customers. Be selective about the brands you carry and the quality of the polish you offer. Appeal to nail technicians and average consumers that shop in your store by offering tools such as emery boards, nail buffers, cuticle pushers, manicure bowls and other items. Select a few on-trend nail art items that will inspire customers and move quickly such as dry nail appliqués. Encourage your staff to wear and use the items that you offer. A great look might encourage curiosity from your customers and you just might nail some great sales!

• Longer wear: One point that many consumers can agree on is that French manicures with traditional polish do not last very long on natural nails. For some consumers who are very hard on their nails, traditional polish tends not to last very long. Gel polish wears much longer than traditional polish. It should be noted that gel polish does not last longer than acrylic. As with acrylic, the rate of a person’s nail growth affects how long the gel can stay on and look neat without being reapplied.

• Less harmful to nails: With the removal of nail enhancements such as acrylic, there tends to be a lot of filing involved. This is also the case when prepping the nails for acrylic application. As is the case with any product, there are negatives when it comes to gel polish as well. Gel services tend to cost more than acrylic services which are more common and remain in high demand. Gel polish can also be time consuming to remove.

With acrylics, customers can typically return to the place they were serviced and get a fill in when their natural nail growth begins to show. When nail growth shows with gel, the polish must be soaked off completely so that it can be reapplied, thereby making the growth less noticeable. This can be a lengthy process.

As a beauty supply storeowner, it’s not likely that you’ll have an opportunity to sell gel nail polish outright. Again, this is due to the fact that gel polish is primarily only offered through professional suppliers to licensed nail professionals. It’s the add-on items nail professionals and consumers will need to purchase from you to enhance their gel services that offer multiple sales opportunities.

Even with gel polish, nail beds still need to be cared for which means cuticles oils, creams and nippers still need to be sold. Polish removers (acetone and non-acetone) are also still needed.

Creative manicures and pedicures reinforce the consumer’s total look.

OTC customers make a fashion statement with their overall style and makeup. Makeup technique does not end with the face. The toes have to be made up, buffed and polished with sticks, liners and appliances.

Nails can be made to look like works of art from enameled abstracts to floral stills. Younger consumers may want ice cream cones and balloons in 3-D. Each design starts with a foundation base coat. Up to five shades of polish and appliqués are then topped off by a quickdry finishing top coat. It takes brushes, paddles and wands to make the magic. Just as in makeup application consumers are seeking the layered look. They use raised decals, tattoos and stickers to get that dimensional design. The sluggish nail care market has been revived by the “Imagineering” of nail care technicians and at home users.

While many nail polish manufacturers are striving to keep up with demand for a varied palette, they are working toward formulas with less chemicals. The category has an inherent dilemma of delivering rich color while being friendly to the environment.

The push to get rid of toxins and improve fragrance is a challenge.

Some manufacturers have removed dibutyl phythalate, toluene and formaldehyde. Others feel the strength of strong color delivery is too essential for their brand image. Formulas for growth and polish remover are also being reviewed. Water-based polish is being considered, but that chemistry is not yet waterproof.

As with makeup, the range of color drives the nail category.

Consumers want choices that are trendy and reflective of their style. Black lacquer is becoming a staple. Just a few years ago it was considered Goth or gauche. Green, blue and purple nail lacquer 28

Not only will the young consumer gravitate toward shades beyond the reds, all consumers have embraced the new rules about nail color. Multicultural consumers have redefined the “French manicure.” Daywear and evening looks are interchangeable as well.

Also fueling the growth are year round mani-pedi services. Consumers have stepped up their spending by taking seasonality out of the equation. Toes are exposed year round. Evening sandals and peak-a-boo boots keep the nail care category buoyant. Toes are as much a shoe fashion as the shoes. The new fashion trend is to match the color of the shoe or boot with the color of the nail. Today’s shoe fashion creates the need for extra spa care for feet. The range of low, slushy boots to the highest heels in history create trauma and pain that can only be remedied by soothing, sloughing, nail spa facials. The nail spa and overnight nail treatments are not to be neglected as part of keeping nails looking like art while feeling the part. Nourishing aging feet requires frequent care and moisturizing between visits. Don’t forget—even if your mature clients are not into the nail art or makeup craze, they may still need anti-aging products to minimize roughness or improve comfort.

Therapeutic products are needed for not so glamorous nail care. Health and safety issues can result from using tools and implements or from otherwise picking up infections. Consumers will be shopping for ointments to soothe nails and cuticles or calm fungal conditions. They will also need remedies for yellowing toes, toe trauma and skin irritation. Whitening, strengthening and disinfecting products should be made available and easily visible in the nail section.

Consumers are spending money to nail the trends. The OTC becomes critical for supplying the salons and the at-home touch up needs. Consumers are creating the looks at home but they are also extending the time between visits with touch ups. The other reason at-home care is brisk is because consumers change their nail color as often as they change their daily makeup.

It’s been said, “That’s the way the world works, if you want to compete this is what you have to do,” when trying to justify a decision that is unethical but increases competitive advantage. In reality, this is the adult equivalent of saying, “But all my friends are doing it.” So, is the decision you are about to make one in which you would want your child to make, or is the justification for your decision one that you would accept from your child when he or she has done something that goes against your instruction?

Also, remember, as managers and business owners you have a hand in making the world what it is. By working hard and progressing in your industry you have earned the ability to make choices for yourself and for others. No one can change the world, and you owe it to your business partners and employees to earn a profit. But, you owe it to those people, yourself, and your family to act ethically. So as a decision maker, you have to decide—and have the ability to decide—which is more important at any one time.

Make You Happier?

Happiness is a tricky thing in that you don’t often know what makes you happy, except from experience.

Some think money will make them happy only to find out that once they get it they’re not that much happier, if at all, than when first starting out. To make an ethical decision you must decide what will make you happy. In following in the footsteps of Socrates; what makes us happy is what makes us better people. You become better and thus happier, when your higher desires—such as the desire for justice, moderation and courage—guide base desires—such as hunger. If your higher desires do not guide your base desires you will be led to gluttony and debauchery.

Everyone gets hungry, but you don’t need to eat yourself into a coma as though everyday is Thanksgiving. Moderation is a higher desire, which guides the base desire of hunger. No one can tell you what will make you happy, or when you are following your base desires instead of your higher desire, you must know thyself.

Exert Power?

If you have to manipulate or coerce someone into going along with your plan, or to achieve your goal, you should rethink your plan. If you can present your argument in a persuasive manner without robbing others of their ability to decide for themselves then you have acted ethically. The workplace is not a democracy most of the time, and subordinates must take directives from above. But, this is not coercion, or at least the type of coercion, from which you should refrain. Telling an accountant to fudge the numbers or she’ll be fired is different from telling the accountant to finish a task before he goes home or there will be consequences because he has already fallen behind.

One of the things that separate humans from other animals is the ability to reason. When you strip someone of their capacity to reason, or act upon what they have reasoned to be the best choice, you have denied them their dignity and therefore acted unethically. Whether it is withholding information from stockholders or threatening punishment if your will is not followed, it’s denying someone or some group the capacity to reason for themselves.

It would be naïve to think that you can, or should, always act as ethicists would have you act. It would be unethical to let your business fail because you don’t want to do what is necessary to keep a business going. But, you should not act badly because it is easier than being good or because you are too motivated or self-interested to say no. What’s provided above is a set of questions that you can ask yourself when making decisions in order to help you decide which path to follow. The intention is not to pass judgment or tell you how to act, but give you a set of guidelines so that you can make decisions fully aware of their implications, ethically and otherwise.

consider your customers to be more than “business” owners. Your most loyal patrons know their fair share when it comes to entrepreneurial related expenses and many expect change as a natural component of maintenance.

Just like invested homeowners must maintain households, cosmetology professionals must also steady themselves with progressive techniques for keeping house.

This season may be just the perfect time to assist with a

bit of “cleaning house.” Manicurists in particular are in a wonderful position to accept your advice when it comes to cleaning and replenishing their faithful bag of tricks. The truth is professionals that are consistently booked can sometimes get a little behind on the latest trends, techniques and new technology. Additionally, their tools wear and tear, so they must be replaced or updated. Fortunately, you have an opportunity to help with these needs and gain rewarding profits in the process.

Consider a customer entering your store, approaching a member of your staff while proceeding to explain quite irritably they are having an emergency and are in need of practically everything required to complete a manicure including a few polish options.

Moreover, they are coming from vacation and unaware of what their own customers may be looking for when they return to work. In no hurry at all, they are asking for opinions, answers and more importantly your business. How would this situation be handled? Could this be a good opportunity for an impressive receipt, or a misfortunate event that you would hope to quickly recover from?

The air is new and the scene is changing. Why not encourage customers to try new products, resources, learn new methods and become more knowledgeable of what consumers want right now?

You can do this easily by familiarizing yourself with upcoming trends and considering your inventory as it applies to fads versus long term overtures. Communicating this know-how to interested professionals is the key to success.

For optimal results, select a few manicurist must-haves and become an expert. Think of products that are current, well-known and easy to sell in small and large quantities. Learning a few color trends as they relate to nail lacquers is also something to take advantage of. Be selective about carrying sleek tools that can really make a job easier.

Professional customers can really appreciate a retail environment that knows what consumers are asking for and keeps it in stock.

Spring’s trending colors are muted tones with little fanatic and more fresh. Schafer fully appreciates this mixture of cool and warm. She supports Crackle for its ability to share a “soft and safe seasonal palette with a deconstructive edge for personalization.” Nail enthusiasts are practically demanding “texture with metallics, glitters and the resurgence of a hot trend [with] crackled nails,” Kirby added.

Color can be fun but it’s important to remember classics like a quality clear topcoat. Professional manicurists typically rely on this quick but important step in nail color application. Some like to avoid simple steps like this when polishing their nails. However, Schafer noted that it is imperative not only to extending the wear of nail color but for the actual care of the nail plate. Encourage change with the recommendation of a classic product. Schafer suggested awardwinning topcoat Seche Vite, a dry fast topcoat with a penetrating formula that forms a single solid coating for a more resilient finish.

Make a habit to recommend a top or base coat whenever a customer purchases polish. Use these transactions as an opportunity to utilize your knowledge and communicate the importance of the top and base coat.

Encourage change by comparing tools and offering constructive feedback about the product. Just remember to become knowledgeable first and then clearly communicate your findings from an objective perspective.

Nancy Waspi (NW): Though Nail Bliss was formed out of our sister brand, Dashing Diva, in 2009, we formally launched the line this year at the Western Buying Conference. The response was overwhelmingly positive! Our products and packaging caught the eyes of many distributors. As the “Salon Alternative,” the line is designed for beauty-savvy trend-seekers who not only embrace, but seek out the do-it-yourself experience. While our products are for the OTC beauty stores, they are salon quality and can be used by beauty professionals as well. The high standard to professional quality is influenced by Dashing Diva.

NW: I recently joined the team as vice President of US Sales covering Canada, Puerto Rico, and the USA. I oversee all sales, distributor operations, manufactures representatives and technical education within the company. Even with more than 35 years of experience in the nail industry, I was very excited to encounter a fresh brand with such growth potential. Nail Bliss is a forward-thinking line, delivering innovative products to the beauty industry as a whole. The company culture breeds creativity, welcoming new ideas with a commitment to developing unparalleled patented technology. There’s an impressive synergy within the company between technology, fashion and function.

NW: There will always be challenges in building awareness and trust for a new brand. But with that said, we love the fact that we’re a new player and see our fresh perspective as an asset not a liability. And though the brand itself might be young, our roots in the nail industry are deep, and we are able to leverage the professional know-how from our team, product trends, and sister-brand; Dashing Diva.

NW: Minimal opening orders with a support system of reps and customer service.

OTC: What observations have you made over the years regarding the industry that could help store owners increase the sales of their nail products?

NW: Everything is cyclical. After spending over 35 years in this industry that I love, sometimes I feel like I have seen it all. However, then something happens that surprises me every day. With all the acquisitions over the years, it does change the playing field somewhat. But change is good! It keeps everyone thinking beyond where they have been. It also leaves the door open for young, aggressive, hungry entrepreneurs. OTC stores could look to align themselves with an entrepreneurial company like Nail Bliss. It makes their job easier because if there is one thing that never changes, it is the salons and consumers are asking what’s new, what’s hot, what’s exciting. Nail Bliss is all of that.

People are moving at a faster pace and are looking for convenience across all platforms, whether it is beauty, technology or takeout. They are also looking to do more with less with a do-it-yourself approach. But even with these shifts, they still demand quality and value.

내 탓, 안 되면 조상 탓’ 이라는 말이 있다. 이는 세상을 살아 가면서 일 이 잘 풀릴 때가 있고 안 풀릴 때도 있는데, 대부분의 사람들은 일이 잘

못 됐을 때 자신의 실수를 인정하지 않고 주변 상황만을 탓하는 경우가 대부분인 데서 나온 말이다. 침체 된 경기로 인해 판매가 저조하다고 앉아서 경기 탓만 할 수는 없는 것이다. 물론, 소비자들의 소비가 줄 어 매출에 많은 영향을 주는 것은 사실이지만, 이 와중에도 승승장구하는 사람들은 분명히 있다. 현재의 상황을 탓하기 보다는 주어진 현실에서 자구책을 찾아 나가기 때문에 그러한 성공을 거두는 것이다. 이 번에 OTC 뷰티 매거진에서 인터뷰한 스토어는 Decatur, GA에 위치한 Fantastic Beauty Supply의 박현 혁, 박미미 사장 부부이다. 주변에 10여개의 동 업종 스토어가 즐비해 있고, 스토어의 사이즈도 그 중 제 일 작지만, 이들 부부는 그 속에서도 그들만의 색깔로 성공을 향해 한 발짝씩 나아가고 있었다. 그 비결 이 무엇인지 들어보도록 하자.

또 다른 시작 2001년, 이 부부는 한국에서 잘 나가던 직장을 뒤로하고 새로운 삶과 아이들의 나은 미래를 위해 과감히 미국 행을 택 하였다. 이 모든 결정을 6개월 만에 했 다고 한다. “제가 원래 좀 과감하게 추진 을 하는 편입니다” 라는 미미씨는 미국 에 온지 2주만에 뷰티 서플라이에서 일 을 시작하였다고 한다. “한국에서 장사 를 해 본적은 없지만 자신 있었습니다” 라는 이들 부부는 그 후로 4년간 쉬지 않 고 열심히 일을 한 후, 2005년 그들만의 스토어를 조그맣게 시작하였고, 1년 뒤 72

에는 또 하나의 스토어를 오픈하게 되었 다. 그들의 두 번째 스토어는 흑인 오너 가 경영을 하다 경영미숙으로 거의 문닫 을 지경의 1,500 sq ft 짜리 스토어인데, 이를 인수하여 현재는 안정된 수익을 올 리고 있다. “대부분의 사람들이 한번 실 패한 스토어는 다시 일으키기가 힘들다 고 생각들을 하지만, 오너의 경영 방식 에 따라 반드시 다시 일으킬 수 있습니 다” 라고 미미씨는 자신 있게 말하였다. 또한, 그녀는 “물론 사이즈가 커다란 스 토어가 좋겠지만, 작은 스토어에도 많은 장점이 있습니다” 라고 이어갔다. 그녀

가 뽑은 장점들 중에는 적은 인건비, 제 품 구비에 대한 적은 부담감, 낮은 재고 율 등이 있지만 무엇보다 적은 렌트비가 최고의 장점이라고 한다. 일반적으로 스 토어가 크면 많은 제품들을 판매할 수 있 고 그로 인해 더욱 많은 수익을 올릴 수 있다고 생각할 것이다. 맞는 말이긴 하지 만, 스토어의 크기 보다는 스토어 경영을 어떻게 하는지가 비즈니스의 승패를 좌 우 한다는 것을 이들 부부와의 인터뷰를 통해 느끼게 되었다. 계속해서 그들의 이 야기를 들어보자.

Fantastic Beauty Supply에는 또 다른 ‘차별’ 요소가 있었다. “제품을 선정할 때 좀 색다른 것을 구입하는 편입니다” 라는 박사장은 스토어 공간의 제약 때문에 제 품의 차별화는 필수라고 한다. 방대한 양의 제품들 대신 다른 스토어에 없는 제품 들을 구비하는 것이 고객들의 발길을 끌 수 있는 또 다른 비결이라 한다. 또한, 취 급하는 제품들은 되도록 떨어트리지 않도록 부지런히 주문을 한다고 한다. 물론, 모든 스토어 오너들이 이러한 사항들을 모르고 있는 것은 아니다. 하지만 이들처럼 꾸준한 실천으로 고객들의 인식을 바꿔놔야 그 결과를 볼 수 있을 것이다.

리더가 돼야 한다 “손님들에게 맞춰가지 말고 끌고 가야 합니다. 손님들의 얼굴을 외우고, 이름을 불러주는 것이 중요하다는 것은 알고 있지만, 제 가 그 쪽엔 소질이 없습니다. 그래서 제 닉 네임을 ‘미미’라는 쉬 운 이름으로 지었고, 손님들에게 저를 기억하게 만들었습니다” 라는 그녀는 스토어 내에서 항상 핑크색 앞치마를 입으며 손님들 에게 자신을 계속해서 어필한다고 한다. 심지어 본인의 이름을 모르는 손님들에게는 항상 ‘미미’라는 이름을 알려주고 손님들에 게 외우도록 강요하고 있다고 한다. 그녀의 말에 ‘궤변’이라고 생 각하는 사람들도 많을 것이다. 기본적인 상식으로는 ‘손님은 왕 이다’ 를 실천해도 모자랄 판인데 말이다. 이에 대해 그녀는 다음 과 같은 설명을 덧붙였다. “손님을 끌고 간다는 것은 손님을 휘 두른다는 것이 아니라 저희 스토어에 맞게 안내를 해준다는 것입 니다. 스토어 내에 손님이 찾는 제품이 없을 시에는 취급하고 있 는 대체 상품으로 유도해야 합니다”. 스토어 공간에 제약이 있는 관계로 모든 제품을 취급할 수 없으니, 손님들을 끌고 갈 수 밖에 없다고 한다. 심지어 헤어 제품을 판매할 때 손님이 원하는 색상 이 없으면 포기하는 것이 아니라 “너의 피부 톤에는 그 색상 보다 는 이 색상이 더 잘 어울린다” 라는 식으로 손님을 리드한다고 한 다. 말을 듣고 보니 손님들도 이에 익숙해 지면 오히려 스토어 오 너에 대한 신뢰가 생길 수도 있겠다는 생각이 들었다. 물론, 이렇 게 하기 위해선 제품에 대한 지식과 믿음이 뒤따라야 할 것이다. 무작정 판매를 목적으로 손님들에게 강요를 했다가는 비즈니스 가 위험에 처하게 될 것이다.

제품에 제약을 둬서는 안 된다 이들 부부의 경영방식을 말해주는 단적인 일화가 있다. 지인의 스토어가 있는 동네가 소득이 낮은 곳이라 비싼 헤어 제 품을 전혀 취급하고 있지 않는다고 했다고 한다. 그래서 그들은 일단 하나라도 갔다 놓고 잘 보이는 데 진열을 해 놓으면 반드시 반응이 있을 것이라고 조언 하였다. 그 말을 들은 지인이 이를 실 천 했는데, 요즘은 비싼 헤어 제품 파는 재미가 쏠쏠하다고 한다. 제품에 대한 제약을 오너들이 할 필요는 없다. 제품을 구입하고 안하고는 손님의 몫이며, 스토어 오너들은 그러한 환경을 만들 어 주기만 하면 되는 것이다. 그러한 환경을 만들기 위해서는 세 일즈맨들과의 관계를 돈독히 하여 많은 정보를 얻어야 한다고 한 다. 이는 현재의 유행을 파악하여 취급할 제품을 선정하는데 도 움이 된다고 한다.

훈훈한 마케팅 현재 Fantastic Beauty Supply는 고객카드를 만들어서 손님들 에게 할인을 해주고 있다고 한다. 또한, 12월에 오는 손님들 중 $10이상 구입하는 사람들에게 티켓을 하나씩 주고 연말에 추 첨을 하여 30여명 정도에게 선물을 나누어 준다고 한다. 하지 만 금액에 상관없이 대부분의 손님들에게 티켓을 나눠주고 있 다고 한다. 이는 마케팅의 일환이지만 고객들에게 감사함을 표 현하는 수단이기도 하다. 이러한 것들이 스토어에 얼마만큼 도 움이 되는지 정확히는 알 수 없지만, 확실한 것은 안 하는 것 보 다는 낫다는 사실이다. “6년째 해오고 있는데 손님들의 반응이 좋습니다” 라는 박사장의 얼굴에서 전략적인 마케팅 보다는 손 님들에 대한 감사함의 표현을 읽을 수 있었다. 이들 부부는 가끔씩 주말이 되면 특별한 계획 없이 가족들과 짐 을 싸서 여행을 떠난다고 한다. “그렇게 하지 않으면 도저히 가 족들이 함께 시간을 보낼 수가 없을 것 같습니다” 라는 박사장 은 “아내는 부지런히 움직이는 것을 좋아합니다” 라고 말은 하 였지만, 아내인 미미씨가 스토어에서 많은 시간을 보내는 것에 대해 안타까움을 표현하기도 하였다. 박사장은 마지막으로 동 업종간의 경쟁이 점점 심해지는 이때 스스로 도태되고 있다는 생각을 버리고 이를 극복하려고 노력했으면 좋겠다는 말을 하 며 인터뷰를 마쳤다.

5. Enjoy the profits. Forty percent is forty percent, but forty percent of a larger number is a LARGER number.

Selling big ticket items puts more bottom line cash on the books with every sale.

Buy low, sell high and enjoy the rewards.

February 19-22, at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta, Ga., Bronner Brothers hosted the 64th edition of the Bronner Brothers International Hair Show. With attendance expected at 35,000, this unique event was prepared yet again to meet the demands of thousands of education-hungry cosmetology professionals, barbers and students. The event is a selfdescribed “Atlanta institution, celebrating 64 years of family tradition, African-American pride, family unity and creative hair.”

The February 2011 edition served up styling competitions, a plethora of classes for attendees, entertainment such as a comedy show, church service and parties, but the event also featured cash-and-carry shopping with over 300 exhibitors. Just a few OTC brands spotted at the event were 4 Hair Corp, AFAM/JF Labs, Andis, ApHogee, Belson, Bonfi Naturals, Bronner Brothers, Clairol Professional, Diamond Bond, Fromm, Jamaican Mango & Lime, Morning Glory, Organic Root Stimulator, SoftsheenCarson and Strength of Nature’s Elasta QP.

The same sentiment echoed throughout the show from pleased exhibitors indicated that they did “great business” and their products were “selling very well.” Many vendors introduced new items at the event, including Andis and Belson.

피스 협회는 지난 2월 20일, Harrah’s Casino에서 열렸던 제 5회 멤피스 쇼를 성공리에 개최 하였다. 40여개의 벤더와, 600여명이 참석한 이날 쇼에서는 타 지역에서 오신 손님들을 위해 아침 8시 30분에 지역의 목사님을

초청하여 간단한 일요 예배를 드리는 것으로 시작하였다. 쇼를 찾은 많은 손님들은 행사장의 부스를 돌아다니며 분주히 주문을 하였으며, 쇼 경품 추첨에서는 루지애나 주의, Ricks Beauty Supply의 박형구씨가 1등으로 뽑혀 한국 왕복 항공권을 받았다. 쇼 다음날인 21일에는 Cottonwood Golf Club에서 50여명이 참석한 가운데 골프대회를 열었다.

나면 향긋한 커피 향은 온데간데 없고 오히려 고약한 입 냄새를 만들어낸다. 캘리포니아주에서 구취 클리닉을 운영 하는 해롤드 카츠는 이에 대해 “우리 입안에는 음식물 섭취 등 신진대사의 결과물로 박테리아들이 살고 있다”며 “커피가 이들의 번식에 이상적인 환경 을 제공해 주기 때문”이라고 말한다. 실제 알코올, 레모네이드 등과 같은 산 성 음료들처럼 커피 또한 입을 건조하 게 만든다. 그런데 인간의 침에는 박테리아 번식 억제 능력이 있으므로 침이 마를수록 박테리아의 번식은 활발해진다. 바로 이렇게 늘어난 박테리아들이 입 냄새 의 주원인인 황화수소(H2S)를 배출,구 취가 발생한다는 것이 그의 설명이다. 만일 커피에 우유나 설탕을 타 먹으면 사태는 더욱 악화된다. 우유와 설탕은 박테리아가 매우 좋아하는 영양분인

탓이다. 또한 설탕의 경우 치석 형성의 원인이 되는데, 구취 박테리아가 바로 이 치석 밑에 숨어산다. 설탕이 구취 박테리아의 은신처를 제공해주는 셈이 다. 카츠 사장은 “구취에도 불구하고 커피를 꼭 마셔야 한다면 다 마신 후 물로 입을 헹궈주는 것이 좋다”며 “사 과, 셀러리 등 거칠고 수분이 풍부한 음식을 조금 먹는 것도 구취예방에 효 과적”이라고 밝혔다. 이것이 귀찮다면 간단히 껌을 씹는 것도 좋다. 이와 관 련, 일리노이대학 미생물학자인 크리 스틴 우 박사는 구취 제거 능력을 공인 받은 자일리톨 껌은 물론 설탕을 쓰지 않은 계피 껌도 효능이 뛰어나다고 말 한다. 그의 연구 결과 계피 껌 내에 함 유된 항균성 계피 유 성분 등에 힘입어 구강 내 박테리아가 최대 50%까지 제 거되는 것으로 나타났다.

를 제품설명서에 표시하도록 했다. 미 국 내에서 진통제 점유율 1위를 차지 하고 있는 ‘타이레놀’은 두드러기부터 심한복통, 위창자자극, 망막출혈, 호흡 곤란, 아나필락서스, 백혈구감소증 등 다양한 부작용 사례가 보고됐다. 실제 타이레놀을 복용한 A환자는 타이레놀 복용 이후 가려움증이나 두드러기를 호소했고 B환자는 망막출혈이나 오한 을 경험해 병원에 내원한 것으로 드러 났다. 또한 특이한 부작용 보고가 이뤄 진 환자는 아나필락서스, 얼굴부종 등 의 증상을 호소했다. 일반적으로 아나 필락서스의 증상은 급성 두드러기, 호 흡곤란, 쇼크 등을 동반하는 치명적인 알레르기 반응이 대표적이라고 알려져 있다. 더욱이 아세트아미노펜을 복용 한 환자에게서 간혹 쇼크 등의 치명적 인 부작용이 보고되기도 했다.

무리한 다이어트, 젊은 여성에 담석증 일으켜

40대50대, 운동 후 48 시간 쉬어야 자신의 나이와 체력은 생각지도 않고 무조건 운동부터 시작하면 탈이 나기 마련이다. 또 추운 날씨로 인해 체력이 많이 저하된 상태에서 갑작스럽게 무 리한 운동을 하게 되면 관절, 근육, 건, 인대 등 근골격계 부위에 손상을 줄 수 있으므로 각별한 주의가 필요하다. 각 연령별로 봄철 운동으로 인한 부상 방 지와 내 몸에 맞는 운동을 위한 운동법 을 을지대학병원 재활의학과 김재형씨 는 다음과 같은 조언을 하였다.

40~50대, 운동 후 48시간 동안 쉬어 야 한다. 젊은 세대와 달리 40대 이후 의 중년층 가운데 평소 규칙적인 운동 을 하지 않은 사람은 처음 운동을 시작 할 때 운동 강도나 종목 선택에 세심한 주의가 필요하다. 특히 근골격계의 특 징을 알고 운동을 시작한다면 부상방 지는 물론 효과적인 운동을 통해 몸짱 이 되는 것도 가능하다. 그리고 심폐질 환이 있는 사람은 무리한 운동이 돌연 사의 원인이 될 수 있기 때문에 심 혈

이나 고정식 자전거타기 같은 충격이 적은 운동을 할 것, 그리고 평소에 수 시로 유연성을 키우는 스트레칭을 하 는 것이 좋다. 특히 50대 이후는 운동 을 시작할 때 먼저 달리기부터 시작하 는 것은 금물이다. 걷기, 고정식 자전 거타기, 수영부터 시작해 차츰 운동량 을 늘려가는 것이 안전하다.

13. 헤어스타일을 수시로 바꾼다.

14. 드라이어를 매일 10분 이상 사용 한다.

15. 비듬이 자주 생기거나 가렵다. 앞서 말한 15가지 자가진단법 중 5개 이상 해당되면 탈모가 생기기 쉬우므 로 예방관리가 필요하다. 탈모라 판단 된다면 샴푸 전, 부드러운 빗으로 머리 를 손질한 후 감는 것이 좋으며 샴푸를 바로 머리에 묻히기 보다는 충분히 거 품을 낸 뒤 마사지 하듯 문질러 준다. 헹굼 시에는 미지근한 물로 여러 차례 헹구도록 하며, 건조는 헤어드라이기 를 직접적으로 쐬어 말리는 것보다 자 연건조 시키는 것이 좋다. 이처럼 생활 에서의 작은 습관부터 탈모를 예방할 수 있도록 노력한다면 탈모 예방에 도 움이 될 수 있다. 뒤늦게 대처하기보단 미연에 방지하여 건강한 모발을 유지 하도록 하자.

뚱뚱한 사람이 더 피곤한 것으로 조 사됐다. 비만치료 윈클리닉은 지난 3 월 초 직장인 143명을 대상으로 ‘체 질량지수(BMI)에 따른 만성피로도’에 대해 조사한 결과, 비만 또는 과체중 인 사람이 정상 또는 저체중인 사람에 비해 피곤함을 더 오랫동안 느낀 것으 로 나타났다고 밝혔다. 정상 또는 저 체중(BMI 23미만)인 93명은 3개월 이상 장시간 피로감을 겪고 있는 비 율이 33.7%(35명)인 것에 비해 과체 중 이상(BMI 23이상)으로 나타난 50 명은 54.0%(27명)로 더 높게 나타났 다. 특히 저체중(BMI 18.5미만)인 그 룹(21명)의 28.6%(6명)와 비교하면 2 배 가까운 비율이다. 6개월 이상 장기 간 피로를 겪고 있는 비율도 저체중은 14.3%, 정상은 30.6%, 과체중 이상( 경도비만 포함)은 36.0%로 조사됐다. 윈클리닉 김덕하 대표원장은 “만성피 로증후군은 극심한 피로감과 무력감, 통증 등을 동반하기 때문에 일상생활 에 심각한 지장을 줄 수도 있다”며 “ 확실한 원인이 밝혀진 것은 없으나 극 심한 스트레스나 충격, 기타 감염질환

등과 함께 비만 또한 그 원인으로 알려 져 있는 만큼 피로를 예방하기 위해서 는 평소 적정한 체중관리에도 신경 써 야 한다”고 강조했다. 문제는 응답자 의 절반 이상인 55.9%가 피로감을 없 애기 위해서 주로 쉬거나 잠을 잔다는 것이다. 만성피로를 앓고 있는 경우라 면 휴식을 취해도 근본적인 피로감 해 소에 큰 도움이 되지 않을뿐더러 방치 했다가 만성피로증후군으로 악화될 수 도 있다. 또 절대적인 활동량 감소는 비만을 유발하기 때문에 피로와 비만 의 악순환으로 이어질 확률도 높다. 운 동부족 자체가 피로의 원인이기도 하 다. 김 원장은 “비만과 피로의 악순환 을 끊기 위해서는 균형 잡힌 영양섭취 와 함께 적당한 운동이 필요하다”며 “ 평소 비타민C가 풍부한 오렌지나 토마 토, 브로콜리, 양배추 등과 같은 신선 한 과일과 채소섭취를 늘리고, 피곤하 다고 무조건 쉬기 보다는 걷기나 자전 거타기 등과 같은 유산소 운동을 적절 히 해주면 비만을 예방하고 피로회복 에도 도움이 된다”고 말했다

JinnyCorpNews Jinny Corp Hard at Work on New and Improved Ordering System

Because PDAs are now nearly obsolete, JOS has undergone an array of changes since its inception. Over the last 16 months, Jinny Corp’s Information Technology (IT) department has focused its efforts on creating a new and improved version of the JOS platform, which is currently compatible on phones with the Windows 7 Operating System.

Paul Hardy, Jinny Corp IT project manager, recently shared with OTC Beauty Magazine a few of the benefits regarding the upgrades being done to JOS. Hardy noted that improvements being made to the JOS Warrior version of the platform, which is used by Jinny Corp sales teams, offer faster ordering capabilities and the most current pricing information available. The platform has also received upgrades that make it more user-friendly. “We’ve completed changes to further enhance the speed in some areas, as well as made some usability improvements,” said Hardy.

While the JOS Mobile version of the platform— the version specifically for use by customers—will be launched at a later date, customers will still benefit from system improvements that are already available to their salespeople.

For instance, if a store is located in a remote area where no signal is available for cell data connection, the new JOS platform can still be used. The salesperson can still create the customer’s order, which will automatically transmit as soon as the salesperson returns to an area with signal strength.

Additionally, with the new JOS platform, product and pricing information is updated daily as opposed to once every week or so as it was with the older platform. These automatic updates ensure that customers are quoted with the most current and accurate information. The new JOS platform also allows salespeople that are speaking with customers faceto-face to conduct faster searches for product and customer information.

Racine County Food Bank Wins in Andis Food Drive Competition
