here has the year gone? Too often we find ourselves pondering this question. It seems that we just celebrated the dawning of 2012, but we turn around to see Halloween decorations and candy already adorning retail store aisles. Time continues to move by so quickly, but the sobering fact remains that there isn’t anything you can do to slow it down. As a store owner you simply have to take advantage of the reoccurring holidays and know how to make them work for you, increasing your sales.

As the holidays come around, so do the seasons of countless gatherings and celebrations with friends and family. During these times when you see people for what could be the first time since last year, you want to be sure to look your best. This is true for your customers too, so be sure to supply them with everything they need to polish their looks from head to toe. For example, to perfect hair— restraining those frizzy flyaways and mending damaged locks—they may visit in search of the perfect hot oil treatment. Learn all about this therapeutic product on page 28. Additionally, when they do visit your store, make sure it is in tip-top shape, clean and organized so they find the way to desired products easily. This allows a purchaser to be calmer and spend more time in the store, which could potentially lead to a bigger sale. This allows your business to keep financially flowing.

Customers are critical on details and notice the appearance even before entering the store. A strong and clear presence which includes a clean, crisp store name, well-lit and fresh window displays, as well as using appropriate colors will attract shoppers. The cash register is the first and last notion; this should always be keep neat and orderly. Keeping an eye out on empty spots on the sales floor deters theft, and also presents a better facade. Hygiene and safety should be a number one concern for your customers. This prevents fewer risks of accidents for the store. Consumers also do not want to smell certain odors circulating through the air, such as employee lunch. Odor eliminators placed strategically about the store will help with this.

Keeping less disorder around the store allows shoppers to walk in and out with ease with a desire to return. Customers are the biggest form of advertising, and your store does not want to be critiqued about your cleanliness in any way. This publicity comes free of charge for your store. It takes about three seconds to make a first impression; this allows the consumer to formulate an opinion even before looking at your merchandise.

Do you feel that you can never disengage? Is there someone there that you don’t want to see? Honestly answering these questions can give you insight into your own mental state, let you know if you are happy with your job, if you can make small improvements, or are completely dissatisfied with your working life.

What’s most important for a quality life? What things make you happy outside of work? Do you want to travel more? Set aside a portion of each paycheck to save for a trip. If your job requires travel, take an extra day to explore the city in which you are working. Take your vacations, even if it’s just to drive to the next town or state. Do you enjoy sports or exercise? Take walks, learn a new sport or join a community sports league, where you can have fun and meet new people. Do you enjoy nature? Visit local parks, learn something more about photography and enjoy capturing nature’s beauty.

Appreciate the simple things in everyday work life. Take inventory of day-to-day accomplishments and take time to celebrate your team’s successes.

Appreciate the fact that you have a roof over your head and a bed to sleep in. As a reminder and a token of thanks for the positive things in your life, volunteer your time. Help those less fortunate and give back to the world that has allowed you to achieve so much with your life. Seek out to be the best that you can be at your job, if for no other reason than knowing that you produce something of good quality.

Good work may lead to better opportunities ahead.

Fill in the middle with what steps you need to take to achieve your goal and start on that path. Sit down and list your dreams, your goals and what makes you happy. Equilibrium between your work and home-life is achievable with devoted focus and direction. Most of our happiness is within our control, and by framing your daily life in a positive light you can make the concerted strides living a balanced and fulfilled work and home life.

Preparing your retail environment for the holiday season can be just as stressful as hosting a Thanksgiving feast or Christmas party. There is much to do and plenty to set up. Now is the time to organize an itinerary; stating your scheduling and deadlines, referencing the places you will need to visit, all the things you would like to get done, and the people that will play a role in making it all happen.

Be On-The-Go Of course it wouldn’t hurt for your list to include the things that make the store more cheery and reflective of the overall spirit of the times, so a trip to the local hardware store for wreaths, trees, air fresheners and lights may be in order. However, while you’re there, grab some paint and brushes or a small tool set. Simple tasks like adding a fresh coat to dingy walls and fixing a leaning, unsafe or unattractive fixture does wonders.

In addition to a few short stops at the hardware depot, go see what items are in your rival store. Make an educated guess about what products are expected to be the ‘it’ gift and trendy buys and make sure you have them in stock. It may even be helpful to see how festive and organized their shop is and determine if you feel 60

Don’t be hesitant about asking your most loyal customers what items they plan to purchase for loved ones.

Establish a plan for how you will merchandise so that these items are grouped together in plain sight, along with any stylish articles and large orders. Further, for attracting the eye, consider what products will be available in novelty colors or pre-packaged as gift sets.

Bright or highly visible signage may help with this too; however I strongly recommend supplementing the nonverbal with the audible. Greeters at the front entrance are a popular way of making sure every customer has an opportunity to be told where the most popular potential presents are stocked.

Consider giving a free gift with purchase to a postal worker that you see daily or donating to the charity that a local sponsor works closely with. Do not take these individuals for granted as they already visit your place regularly.

Some of the most important people to your business are your staff. Assign tasks (like consistent restocking, based on business needs) and jot down names and dates of expected completion. Clue key employees in on the itinerary, letting them know their vital part in producing holiday success.

That bears the question—is your leadership out of balance? Most likely it is because statistically, more than 85 percent of the population tilts toward being strong at either results or relationships and weak at the other.

What’s wrong with being out of balance? The idea of balancing results and relationships is nothing new, but if we assume that character is the foundation of leadership, then there should be an inner motivation to accomplish the mission (get results) and take care of the people (build relationships). If you don’t get results, you can’t be truly successful in your work or justify your purpose; if you don’t take care of your people, some will quit and leave, and some will quit and stay. In either case, it’s not a viable situation.

So in the long run, balancing a concern for people with accomplishing the mission is crucial to success.

Identify your natural bent. How can you know and what can you do about it? Begin by examining the two columns above and deciding which list of behaviors best describes your “natural” talents. This indicates your natural leadership style and predicts the direction of your tilt as well as the area in which you need to work to improve your balance. If you can’t determine your natural bent, then ask someone who knows you well.

How do you gain a better balance? First, accept the fact that most of your strengths are natural—we are born with them and naturally out of balance. To get better, we have to change by learning some new personality talents (behaviors). You don’t need to give up who you are or what you have and you don’t need to reinvent yourself.

Rather, you augment your strengths by adapting new behaviors that will make you more effective. The way you do this is to intentionally learn a few behaviors in your weaker area that bring you more in balance.

The reason this is so hard is that it’s not natural, and therefore often feels very awkward.

Results-oriented leaders need to soften up. If this is your style, just the idea of softening may seem absurd; but developing good interpersonal skills is what’s needed to make you a better leader. For example, learning to patiently listen, really understand, and then affirm the ideas of others can feel very scary. For some, the needed skill might be learning to give specific, positive feedback. These “soft” skills would be as easy as breathing for many relationship-oriented leaders; but for the tough rational results group, it can be terrifying—they feel out of control and way out of their comfort zone. It takes intentional courage for a thickskinned, results-oriented person to be a good leader and do these “people” things that are so important.

Business Tips Relationship-oriented leaders need to toughen up. If you’re someone whose style is naturally highly relational you will need to identify a couple of behaviors on the results-oriented chart to work on. Quite often this is learning to be more decisive and more direct in giving guidance and setting standards. Casting a stretch vision and conducting difficult conversations is essential to keep the organization and individual team members moving ahead toward successful execution. It may be intimidating, so plan out what you are going to say and then courageously deliver your message; it’s the only way for you to gain a better balance and be the leader you want to be.

Small changes pay big returns. No matter which side of the balance scales you’re on, adapting new behaviors on your weak side even at small levels will lead to significant improvements. Over time they will become easier, thus facilitating even further change for the leader.

It takes courage to change. You cannot become a better leader by reading books and going to workshops.

These are great ways to learn, but when it comes down to actual growth, you have to change your behaviors; there is no other way. You have to give up some of your old habits like dominating or withdrawing and engage others with a more balanced leadership style. You have to do this under the daily pressures of life and work.

That’s what it means to lead with honor—having the courage to do what you know you should do.

Take the first step. Now that you’ve read this, what are you going to do differently to gain a better leadership balance? Who will you engage as your support team to encourage and support you in your growth? As you make progress balancing on the leadership seesaw, help others to gain a better balance too.

According to a recent consumer report, relaxer sales are falling dramatically after leveling out and breaking even for the past two years. This of course is no surprise to those of us that develop products for natural hair care. For anyone who has had a relaxer, the transitioning process is never easy. Chemicals like sodium hydroxide and others permanently transform the natural structure of the hair strand and this can cause a great deal of damage in the process. This program can serve to keep the Beauty Store customers close to their management and in turn enhance the relationship.

Like many companies within the industry, Liquid Gold Hair Products Co. started when one man saw a need for a product, used this as inspiration and created the good. The rest is history as the company grew from there. One single observation turned into a successful business—in this case, over 25 years ago. OTC Beauty Magazine (OTC): What is your background as it pertains to the beauty business?

Dr. Edward Tony Lloneau (TL): I gained my Ph.D. from the National Beauty Culture League (NBCL) and was sanctioned through Howard University in 1985. Continually strengthening my expertise in the area of Trichology (the science and study of hair, scalp and the care of both), I have worked in the hair care business for over 40 years.

OTC: How did you get the idea for your product line?

TL: This product line was developed through searching the industry to see what was needed that was not being provided by the manufacturers. I found that hair weaving was very popular, especially among black women around the world. The common method was to create a series of braids across the scalp, then sew the hair tracts to the braids (called plats). This procedure took hours and was expensive. In the late 1980s a method was used to glue the added hair to the natural hair close to the scalp after parting. The glue used was latex based and would come loose when wet. This method took about an hour to complete at a greatly reduced cost, but would come loose in short period of time.

I took notice of these facts; by experimenting with many kinds and types of adhesives I developed the hair bonding product Liquid Gold. I chose to name it this because of its deep amber color. It was not latex base and lasted through several shampoos.

OTC: How did your company get its start?

TL: Liquid Gold first got its start by being placed in beauty supply stores on consignment in Los Angeles. The product would be placed next to the similar items. Every 10 days or two weeks I would go back to check and re-stock the product. The line 78

OTC: 귀사는 어떻게 시작이 되었습니까?

TL: Liquid Gold는 처음에 로스앤젤레스의 뷰티 제품 매장에 위탁 판매 형태로 배치가 되었습니다. 제품은 유사 제품 옆에 진열이 되었습니다.

10-14일마다 제가 직접 매장을 확인하고 제품을 추가 진열했습니다. 이 라인은 2가지 제품으로만 구성이 되었습니다. 접착제와Bond Dissolver라는 이름의 리무버. 용해제는 다른 브랜드의 접착제까지 지울 정도로 성능이 좋았고, 모발의 손상없이 신속하고 안전하게 결합을 해체하는 용해제가 함유되어 있어서 효과가 더 높았습니다. 곧 뷰티 제품 업체들이 저보다 먼저 제품의 공급을 요청 해왔습니다. 머지않아 뷰티 제품 유통업체들로부터 제품에 관한 문의가 이어졌고, 미국 전역의 매장에 공급하고자 저와 접촉을 원했습니다. 영국과 유럽 국가들에게까지 소식이 전해졌죠. 이 제품의 가장 놀랄만한 점은 소비자 광고없이 이러한 일들이

consisted of only two items—the Adhesive and a remover called Bond Dissolver. The dissolver did well because it would remove other brands of bonding glues also and did it better because it actually contained solvent that would safely loosen the bond much faster without hair breakage. Soon the beauty suppliers were calling for more before I could get back. It was not long before the beauty product distributors were getting calls for the products, and contacted me to service stores all over the U.S. Word even spread into the UK and other European countries.

What is so remarkable about this is that it was done without any consumer advertising. The only advertising was in trade publications to the beauty supply industry. This got the product in the stores. After that it sold itself.

OTC: Please explain the structure of the company and any other areas of the industry you are involved in.

TL: My son and daughter work with me in the business, along with four other employees. I teach classes at trade shows around the country on the subject of Cosmetology Chemistry and Trichology as it relates to cosmetology and chemistry in regards to how products work to bring about a change in the hair. I have also written a book, “What the Text Books and State Boards of Cosmetology Left Out and Ignored.” The purpose of the book and lectures are to inform the readers of the fact that when ethnic students graduate from Cosmetology schools knowing ONLY what is in the text book and the requirements of the state boards (and no more), they do not have enough information to perform many of the services required by their ethnic clientele

OTC: 업계내의 다른 접착 제품과 비교해서 Liquid Gold는 어떤 장점이 있습니까?

TL: Liquid Gold는 많은 장점을 가지고 있습니다. 예를 들어: 1. 건조된 후 투명하여 눈에 보이지 않습니다. 다른 제품들은 검정색이나 흰색으로 건조가 되기 때문에 모발과 같은 색상을 사용하지 않으면 접착제가 눈에 띄게 됩니다.

TL: Liquid Gold will soon be in major retail stores. The product should do well there because it does not compete with any other product in these stores.

Due to the fact that Liquid Gold is a multicultural product, it will be displayed in both ethnic and general market sections of the hair care display. It is rare for a black manufacturer of hair care products to be able to cross over into the total market. Here’s hoping that other black manufacturers can do the same without having to hide their identity.

은 것에 도전을 했을 때 이루어지는 경우가 많다. 물 론, 그에 따른 위험부담이 큰 것도 사실이다. 하지만 실패를 두려워한다면, 그 어떤 도전도 할 수 없는 것 이다. 이번에 Otc 뷰티 매거진에서 인터뷰를 한 오 너는 Duluth, GA 에 위치한 Venus Beauty supply 를 운영하고 있는 한영호 사장이다. 한 사장은 현재 환경 이 매우 다른 두 개의 뷰티 서플라이 스토어를 경영하 고 있으며, 새로운 길을 개척해 나가는 몇 안 되는 오 너들 중 하나이다. 한 사장이 어떠한 새로운 길을 개 척하고 있는지 들어보도록 하자.

도전의 시작 뷰티 스토어의 특성상, 대부분의 고객이 여성들임을 감안 해 미의 여신 Venus 라는 이름으로 스토어를 명명했다는 한사장은, 1998년에 도미하여, 한국에서 비즈니스를 운영 했던 경험을 살려 스토어 운영을 결심하였다고 한다. 1년 반 정도를 뷰티 서플라이 스토어에서 일을 하며 경험을 쌓은 후, 2000년도부터 본인의 스토어를 운영하기 시작 하였다고 한다. 처음엔 1,700 sq ft 의 조그마한 스토어에 서 시작을 하여, 현재는 16,000 sq ft 와 24,000 sq ft 규 모의 두 개 스토어를 운영하고 있다. 면적으로만 따지자 면, 20배가 훌쩍 넘는 성장인 것이다. 물론, 그만큼의 판 매가 성장했다는 뜻이 아니라, 지면적인 것을 말하는 것 이다. “처음엔 많이 고전도 했지만, 첫 번째 스토어를 확 장 하고 나서는 어느 정도 자신감이 붙었습니다” 라는 한 사장은 두 번째 스토어도 처음엔 작은 규모로 시작을 하 였다고 한다.

넉넉한 스토어 공간 활용 스토어의 공간이 넓다는 것에는 확실히 장점이 있다. 일단, 제품의 배치를 고객들이 원하는 배치로 만들 수 있다고 한 다. 예를 들어, 제품의 종류에 따라 제품을 배치한 섹션이 따로 있고, 브랜드 별로 제품을 배치한 섹션도 따로 만들 수 있다는 말이다. 이러한 환경이 스토어를 방문한 고객들 에게 굉장한 편리함을 제공해 줌은 말 할 필요도 없다. “ 잘 판매되는 제품은 주로 눈에 잘 띄는 앞쪽에 배치를 합 니다. 그러면 스토어를 방문하는 사람들이 스토어에 친근 한 인상을 갖게 됩니다” 라는 한사장은 본인이 다른 스토 어를 방문 했을 때, 원하는 제품을 찾아 다녀야 하는 수고 를 해야 하는 데서 오는 불편함을 느끼고 이러한 생각을 하 였다고 한다. 또한, 스토어 문을 열고 들어온 고객들의 눈 에 그들이 사용하고 있는 제품들을 바로 보게 된다면, 최 소한 구입할 제품이 있다는 심리적인 친근감을 줄 수 있다 고 한다. 전통적인 그로서리 마케팅 방법 중에, 모두들이 찾는 우유를 가장 뒤편에 배치함으로 해서 고객들을 매장 안쪽까지 유인하는 방법이 쓰여왔다. 하지만, 이는 구 시

대적인 발상이 되어 버렸다. 점점 바빠지는 현대 사회의 고객 들은 자신이 필요로 하는 제품들을 바로 구매해 매장을 빠져 나가길 바라고 있다. 따라서, 그들을 억지로 매장 깊숙이 까 지 발걸음을 하게 만드는 것은 오히려 고객들에게 반감을 살 수도 있을 것이다.

확연히 다른 환경의 두 스토어 한 사장의 스토어에서 주목할 것은, 사실은 매장의 크기가 아니다. 한사장의 두 번째 스토어는 아직까지 백인들이 더 많이 거주하고 있는 지역이다. 대부분의 뷰티 서플라이 스토 어가 흑인 지역에 위치해 있는 환경과는 많이 다르다. 두 개 의 스토어 중, 한 스토어는 주위에 동 업종 스토어가 수도 없 이 많지만, 다른 스토어는 주위에 동 업종 스토어가 전무한 상태이다. 고객층도 전혀 다르다고 한다. 두 번째 스토어엔 백인들 고객이 대략 30% 라는 사실은 물론, 같은 흑인들이 라도 생활환경이 전혀 다른 고객들이라고 한다. “두 번째 스 토어를 오픈하고 나서, 너무나 생소한 고객들 반응 때문에 당황했던 기억이 납니다” 라는 한사장은 두 개의 스토어가 정말 다른 방식으로 운영되고 있다고 한다. 기본적으로 제품 에서도 많은 차이가 있다고 한다. 두 번째 스토어에서는 ‘이 러한 제품들도 있구나’ 라고 생각할 정도의 생소한 제품들도 취급하고 있으며, 고객응대법 또한 다르게 해야 한다고 한 다. “그 동안 경험해 보지 못했던 것이라 많이 배우고 있습 니다. 이렇게 새로운 것들을 배워 나가다 보면, 앞으로는 남 들보다 앞서나갈 수 있는 밑거름이 될 수 있을 것입니다” 라 는 한사장은, 생소한 환경이 이제 조금 익숙해 지기 시작하 였지만, 앞으로 2~3 년간은 계속해서 배우는 단계가 될 것 같다고 한다.

새로운 길의 개척 뷰티 서플라이 스토어를 운영하는 많은 오너들은, 고객층을 흑인들에 국한시킬 것이 아니라, 다른 민족을 겨냥하여 영역을 넓혀 가야 한다는 것을 잘 알고 있으 며, 이에 대해 많은 얘기들을 나누고 있다. 하지만, 실제로 이를 실천하는 오너 들은 거의 없다고 봐도 과언이 아니다. 한사장이 두 번째 스토어를 선정할 때, 흑인 지역이 아니다 보니, 지금 당장 보다는 철저히 앞으로의 전망만을 보고 스 토어를 오픈 하였다고 한다. 대부분의 새로운 스토어들은 이미 동 업종 스토어 들이 즐비하게 들어서 있는 지역에 억지로 비집고 들어가 문제를 야기시키는 것 이 보통인데, 한사장은 남들과는 다른 선택을 하였다. “지금은, 당장의 수익보다 는 미래에 대한 투자라고 생각하고 있습니다” 라는 한사장은 2~3 년 정도 후면 지금보다 훨씬 낳은 환경이 만들어질 것이라 생각하고 있다고 한다. 현재 뷰티 서플라이 스토어들이 포화상태라고 모두들 입을 모으고 있는 실정에, 근처에 동 업종 스토어가 없다는 것은, 그만큼의 위험부담이 크다는 반증인 것이다. 하지 만 한사장은 그러한 부담감을 이겨내고 실천을 해 냈으며, 현재 그의 목표를 향 해 계속해서 전진하고 있는 것이다. 스토어를 운영하면서 가장 중요한 요소 중 하나가 제품이라고 생각한다는 한사 장은, “아무리 서비스가 좋다고 해도, 그들이 필요로 하는 제품이 없다면 스토어 를 방문하지 않을 것입니다” 라며 구색을 갖추고, 제품이 품절되지 않게 잘 관리 하는 것도 중요한 사안이라고 한다. 앞으로의 당분간은 두 번째 스토어에 좀더 집중하여 배워나갈 것이라는 한사장은, 침체된 경기 탓에 무분별하게 판매만을 촉진하는 도매상들에게 자제를 부탁한다는 말로 인터뷰를 마쳤다.

Retooling and Reducing will help you achieve this. In the end I would say to retool, reduce and retain; when implemented, these can be the vital components to their better beauty business.

Big Profits Come in Small Packages Holiday consumers may be thinking small this year.

Huge wreaths and gigantic Santas may not adequately ring in the holiday season. It’s time to start thinking about the little things that mean so much. Gift cards, bracelet charms and small electronics will be popular as promotions and as gifts. Consumers are very much interested in collecting charms and mementos.

These miniature items can be worked into impressive promotions. Consumers seem to be shopping in a compact way. Mini USB’s are gifts as well as marketing gimmicks. When decorating for the upcoming holiday season utilize the small hi-tech tie-ins that lead to big profits. You will notice many promotions involve pulling a coupon from a website, in-pack and on-pack value items, or small inexpensive electronics. When getting ready for the holiday hype don’t forget QR codes and mini thumb drives. In-store displays should have the social media codes alongside the actual items.

Customers can look up reviews and ratings, or view content and video. Recent research found that about half of consumers (52 percent) used their phones in stores during the holidays. Thirty eight percent said they called friends for advice and 24 percent said they looked up product reviews. Meanwhile, about 25 percent looked up product prices to see if they could find a cheaper price at other retailers.

For marketers, thinking about the season does not mean stringing up lights and playing holiday music.

It does mean supporting your in-store efforts with little holiday sparkles to boost interest and promote awareness.

Congratulations to all of our U.S Olympic athletes who participated in the 2012 London Olympic Games. I applaud all of the participants from every country including the over looked janitorial staff that cleaned up after each event. I extend this gratitude to the security, media, family, parents, package handlers, caterers and many others who made it possible for the Olympic Games to be played and enjoyed by millions. America sent some of the best athletes our country has to offer regardless of race, color, physical challenges, sexual orientation or gender. As we all know, there were thousands of athletes who participated, but only a few who came home with a medal.We will all remember the athletes who come in first and brought home the gold, even those who placed with silver or bronze; we all know that they were only seconds or inches from being labeled the best and bringing home the prestigious gold medal.

As I look deeper into my personal accomplishments, I realize and understand there are many silent players on my success team who help me reach my goals every day. I can’t remember the last time I took time to thank my ancillary staffs that help me make my business profitable. I want you all to remember that success will always be built on relationships, hard work, integrity, honesty, passion, sacrifice and most of all gratitude.

These are key factors in the DNA of those who achieve and win a gold medal.

This brings me to a moment of shame in the Olympic Games which made me realize and understand how petty people can be when it comes to really missing the point. A beautiful 16 year old, young woman by the name of Gabby Douglas, who is a winner of a few gold medals, was criticized about her hair during the Olympic Games. After hearing her story of struggle and sacrifice I was amazed by her accomplishments. I heard about all the people who helped her along the way.Yet some people could only see the one thing that did not matter in this entire equation, Gabby’s hair. I would like to say this one thing in closing, although this unkind comment was made after she took her gold medal, I’m sure her hair was the last thing on her mind while pursuing her dreams of success. Now that Gabby has a 90 million dollar endorsement from Kellogg’s company, I’m sure she can buy all the hair care products our industry has to offer. My point here is simple: remember to thank the people who help you build and accomplish your goals and stay away from those who cannot find the greatness in your sacrifice and commitment to be the best and reach for the gold. Ethnic Multi-Cultural HBC Conference a Huge Success

T

he American Health & Beauty Aids Institute (AHBAI) held its 2012 Ethnic Multi-Cultural HBC Conference August 13-15 at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas.

Key executives from the beauty industry including manufacturers, distributors, retailers, beauty and barber suppliers, vendors and media attended this event. Pepper Miller of the Hunter-Miller Group gave an awesome presentation on “Meeting the Needs of the Changing Consumer Pt. II.” Jay Forbes, President of The Forbes Connection wowed the attendees with “An Insiders’ Guide to Retail Success.” In addition there was an outstanding panel titled “The Multi-Cultural Marketing Explosion” featuring Michael Glennon, Category Manager, Personal Care, CVS; Pepper Miller, President, The Hunter-Miller Group; Taliah Waajid, President, Black Earth Products; and Rich Dennis, Founder & CEO, Sundial Brands.

“Attendees were very excited about the Multi-Cultural Marketing Explosion Panel because they had an opportunity to interact with the industry experts on the panel and gain greater insight into the ethnic HBC category,” stated Geri Duncan Jones, Executive Director, AHBAI. “By all accounts, this conference was a huge success,” stated Clyde Hammond, AHBAI chairman and President, Summit Laboratories.

예수에게 아내가 있었다? 예수가 직접 아내의 존재를 언급한 고대 문 서가 공개돼 파문이 일고 있다. 미국 하버드 대 신학부 캐런 킹 교수는 이탈리아 로마에서 열린 제10회 국제콥트학회에서 ‘예수 아내의 복음서’라고 명명한 4세기경 파피루스(이집 트 파피루스 풀줄기의 섬유로 만든 종이) 문 서 조각을 공개하고 관련 학술논문을 발표했 다. 그는 “이 문서가 서기 150년경 만들어진 원문의 필사본으로 추정된다”며 “예수가 자 신의 아내를 지칭한 현존하는 유일한 고대 문 서”라고 밝혔다. 킹 교수는 콥트어와 초기 기 독교 분야 전문가다. 가로 8cm, 세로 4cm 크 기의 파피루스 조각 앞면에는 이집트 남부지 방에서 주로 쓰이던 콥트어의 방언인 사이딕 어로 예수와 제자들의 대화로 추정되는 여덟 개의 문장이 적혀 있다. 뒷면에는 ‘나의 어머

성의 미의 욕구를 지속적으로 증가시킨다’고 한 다. 그 결과 뷰티제품 소비가 늘어나면서 남성 들에게 더욱 매력을 어필할 수 있는 기회를 얻 게 된다는 것이다. 즉, 경기가 침체되면 나타난 다는 ‘립스틱 효과’ 역시 여성들이 매력을 어필 하기 위해 생겨난 것이라고 결론지었다. 기본적 으로 여성들은 이성에게 매력을 풍기기 위해 다 양한 뷰티 제품을 구매하는 경향이 있다. 특히 제정적으로 안정적이라면 굳이 뷰티 제품이 아 니더라도 소비가 자연스럽게 늘어난다.

동그란 달걀, 10억분의 1 확률. 갸름하고 타원형인 얼굴을 가리키는 ‘계란( 달걀)형’ 얼굴이라는 묘사가 무색하게 희귀 한 구 모형 즉 ‘동그란 달걀’이 최근 영국에 서 또 발견됐다. 영국 일간지 인디펜던트는 윈치모르 힐(winchmore hill)에 거주하는 두 아이의 엄마인 캐시 그린힐(32)이 지난주 자 기 아들을 위해 오믈렛 요리를 준비하다가 며 칠 전 구입했던 한 판의 달걀 가운데서 이 특 이한 달걀을 발견했다고 전했다. 이처럼 둥 그런 달걀이 나타날 확률은 10억분의 1로 알 려졌다. 아이러니하게 그린힐은 달걀 알레르 기가 있어 정작 본인은 달걀을 먹지 못한다. 그는 하루에 약 12개 달걀을 먹는 보디빌더 남동생으로부터 이 소중한 달걀을 보호하느 라고 심혈을 좀 기울였던 것으로 전해졌다.

외출할 때마다 그는 ‘성경에서의 선악과 경 고처럼 동생에게 “이 주방의 모든 것은 네가 임의로 먹되 냉장고 안에 그 ‘소중한 달걀’은 먹지도 만지지도 말라”고 경고한다. 발견 당 시 놀라움과 흥분을 금하지 못했지만 그는 또 인터넷 검색을 통해 자신이 동그란 달걀 의 최초 발견자는 아니라는 것을 알게 됐다. 최근 사례는 지난 2010년 영국 콘월 지역의 한 호텔에서 근무하는 요리사가 발견한 동그 란 달걀이다. 당시 이 요리사는 자신이 지난 7~8년 동안 약 10만 개의 달걀을 만졌지만 이 같은 달걀은 처음이라고 밝힌 바 있다. 한 편 인디펜던트는 이런 특이한 달걀이 영국에 연이어 두 번 발견된 것은 영국인들이 달걀 을 즐겨 먹기 때문이라고 주장했고, 영국 국

손바닥 인식기능 개발 인텔이 손바닥을 새로운 비밀번호로 사용할 수 있는 방법을 고안했 다. 기존에 지문 인식이나 손가락의 생김새, 마디 등의 차이를 인식 하는 방식과 달리 이번에는 손바닥의 정맥의 패턴을 파악하도록 했 다. 미국 샌프란시스코 모스콘 컨벤션센터에서 열린 ‘인텔개발자포 럼(iDf)2012’에서 인텔은 ‘손바닥 정맥 인식기(palm vein detector)’ 를 새로운 개인인증 수단으로 소개했다고 외신들이 보도했다. 인텔 스리드할 렌다르 연구원은 지난 주 iDf에서 직접 이 기술을 시연했 다. 그는 Pc에서 윈도7 운영체제(Os)에 로그인 할 때 자신의 손을 손바닥 정맥 인식기 앞에서 흔드는 것만으로 본인인증을 받았고, 자 신의 은행계좌를 볼 수 있게 했다. 또한 그가 Pc에서 멀어지면 자동 으로 윈도 화면이 잠금상태로 바뀌었다. 노트북에서 손바닥 인식 기

가주협회 가주협회는 이번 10월에 새 회장 선거가 있을 예정이라고 한다. 현재 협회장의 임기가 올 해 말로 끝나고, 내년부터 새로이 협회를 이끌어 나갈 9대 회장을 선출한다고 한다. 후보자 등록은 10월 중순까지이며, 10 월 29일에 있을 이사회에서 선거를 치를 예정이라고 한다. 새로운 회장선거는 협회 이사들만 참석하여 선 출한다고 한다.

Beauty Supply Foundation for Community Change The Beauty Supply Foundation for Community Change encouraged high school seniors in “Becoming the Change Our Community Needs” through their 2012 Scholarship Program.

Mr. Park, owner of Cosmo Beauty Supply Stores, has funded the scholarship for the past four years. The program is underwritten by Gary Gardner of Namaste Labs, the makers of Organic Root Stimulator. Mr. Park wanted a way that he could give back to the communities his stores were

a part of, but did not know how to approach it. Namaste sales representatives approached Mr. Park about offering scholarships and he immediately said yes.

Andis Education and Talent at the Bronner Brothers Show Andis Co. continued its 90th Anniversary in style at the Bronner Brothers International Hair Show in Atlanta, August 4-6. For three days Andis Educators Tone McGill and Rodrick Samuels led classes presenting barbering and business skills for a successful and growing career.

While on the Andis stage they, Kenny Duncan, Jaye Da Barber and Shakira V. Duncan with special guest actress Sy Sayonara demonstrated the latest clippers, blades, trimmers and Andis Titanium Flat Irons.

On Sunday, August 5, Andis sponsored the Total Look Barber Competition. Twenty-five contestants had 45 minutes to complete a hairstyle using only Andis tools. The judges included Evelyn Mims, producer of Atlanta and Company and a panel of stylists including Dwight Eubanks, owner of the Purple Door Salon; Sammy Jones, top international hair competitor; Tony Dodson, ground breaking beauty educator in Africa; and Dave Ray, author of “What is Good Hair.”

Former Total Look winner and Andis Educator Kenny Duncan addressed the crowd and shared how the competition helped his resume and confidence as a barber and stylist.

James Bronner awarded the first place trophy and $1,000 to John Ruff for “the hottest kid on the block,” second place trophy and $500 to Khaliq Mabry for “Ruckage—the evolution of men’s style,” and David Lindsay and his “bad man” for the third place trophy and $250. In addition, first place John Ruff received an Andis prize pack that included the Limited Edition 90th Anniversary Master Clipper, Superliner Trimmer, blades and more valuing more than $500.
