his month, OTC pays homage to the body’s largest organ—the skin. It covers us and protects our other organs, so clearly the skin deserves a little respect. As a storeowner, you should be sure that the beauty needs of your customers are serviced across the board. At least one associate in your store should be able to speak with shoppers about every aspect of beauty from hair care, to nail and skin care.

To ensure that you’re able to speak with consumers about their needs, you have to educate yourself on what those needs are. If your consumer base has darker skin, lending to African heritage, it’s important to know that this type of skin experiences very specific issues, which you can read about starting on page 24.

Additionally, it’s important to recognize that this audience trusts specific products to meet their skin care needs. The multicultural consumer group also seeks out certain ingredients to address their specific skin care needs. You’ll find a comprehensive list of this information in Skin Care: The Profit Center of the Future starting on page 42.

While no customer expects you to play the role of dermatologist or esthetician when they shop your store, customers do expect a certain level of customer service. Being able to communicate the benefits of the products that you offer is a great way to begin establishing a genuine rapport with customers. Just remember that your product knowledge shouldn’t stop with relaxers and shampoos; expand it to your skin care section and watch what happens.

I

t is important to understand the needs of your customer base.

Skin care is essential and African-Americans have specific problems and solutions. For instance, skin cancer is rare but more deadly for people of color due to the fact that it is usually detected much later. The reason skin cancer is rare in people of color is because the dark pigmentation blocks most of the ultraviolet rays of the sun that are responsible for most forms of skin cancer.

However, there are some problems associated with dark skin.

African-American skin produces more natural skin oils—sebum— than other cultures. This is inherent from the African heritage where the climate is extremely hot and humid. In these conditions, oily skin aids in keeping the skin cool and the dark pigmentation prevents skin diseases from ultraviolet sunrays. The problem associated with dark oily skin in some people is a condition called Keloids. Keloids are formed after a cut or any puncture of the skin that causes bleeding.

With keloids, when the skin heals, an erosion of the skin forms resembling a hardened lump the same diameter of the cut. People with this condition should not get any service that involves skin piercing. A keloid can also form after a burn. Following are more concerns about African-American skin care.

Uneven skin tone is one of the most common beauty dilemmas to beset all skin, black or white. However for women of color, the problem is more apparent because their skin is so rich in melanin. Applying the right shade of foundation usually helps even out a blotchy complexion, but more serious skin discolorations require medical attention. Understanding what causes uneven skin tone and how the most common cosmetic procedures differ can clear the way to finding the best solution for improving the appearance of African-American skin.

When African-American skin becomes inflamed, melanocytes color, or pigment-producing cells, go into overdrive and produce more pigment. The result, called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, is a dark spot surrounding the site of the acne flare-up, eczema or other inflammatory conditions. On the other 24

First, consumers should seek professional help. The purpose of aestheticians and dermatologists is to ensure the best looking and healthiest possible skin, so mutual cooperation is an important factor for keeping patients looking and feeling their very best. Since skin discolorations can develop for a variety of reasons, the second step is to identify and treat the inflammatory condition producing the excess melanin. The third step is to address the scarring, which typically does not fade without medical treatment.

A dermatologist has several options for evening the skin tone, the most common of which is the use of chemical bleaching creams. Bleaching creams work by blocking the formation of new pigment. All the agents used contain one basic ingredient: hydroquinone. Hydroquinone is the same chemical found in over-the-counter products such as Ambi or Porcelana and other skin toning products. The difference is in the concentration levels.

Over-the-counter products have about two percent hydroquinone, whereas the prescription medications used have concentrations ranging from four percent to ten percent, depending on the type and purpose of treatment. In conjunction with the prescription bleaching cream, a dermatologist will probably recommend a sunscreen to apply to the affected areas, since further sun exposure will make the dark spots darker.

Black men often have problems with inflammation and darkening skin when they shave. A lot of the products men use on their face before and after shaving, including the razor, cause irritation and darkening of the skin. Since the problem frequently lies in the technique, the first step in treatment is to teach men the best way to shave. If that doesn’t correct the problem, one alternative is to apply a mild steroid cream after shaving to help maintain a uniform skin tone.

Although it can be a very useful technique for removing excess pigment in the upper layers of skin, most dermatologists shun chemical peels as a viable treatment for black skin. Aside from the skin inevitably becoming lighter, the lines of demarcation between the new and old skin are often visible with darker-skinned people.

Removing dead skin cells, or exfoliation, can be helpful in maintaining a smooth, even appearance to the skin. When you can remove dead cells from the surface skin layer, what’s left is an even texture and even color that imparts a glow. Because pigmentation problems are so common, using a gentle, fragrance-free scrub with a facial loofah once or twice a week to deep cleanse is a good practice to adopt.

Sun protection is vital for all skin types as a preventative measure against damaging ultraviolet rays that aggravate skin discoloration. If used on a daily basis, a sunscreen can help eliminate irregular pigmentation. A dermatologist can help determine what SPF protection level is best for your skin tone. An added plus: many of the moisturizers and foundations on the market today have sunscreen built-in. Major advances are constantly being made in the area of skin care, so if a customer’s skin tone is less-than-perfect, they should seek professional treatment and celebrate their skin’s special tone.

Olive oil has many benefits due to its multiple uses. It can be used for culinary art in the kitchen, as internal medicine for heart health and stomach indigestion, as well as aid in healthy cholesterol levels.

Olive oil comes in many variations. The purest form is extra virgin or cold-pressed. This means that the oil is unrefined and has not been processed as much as other types of the oil. Olive pomace oil is not pure olive oil and may be mixed with a small percentage of the pure extra virgin olive oil. The heating process of extracting the oils limits the effectiveness of the benefits that the oils provide. For example, when we fry food in olive oil it releases free radicals— cancer causing agents—that take away from the healing properties of the oil. The same is true for the olive oil we apply to the skin and hair. Olive oil is rich in nutrients. Following is a list of just a few of those nutrients: • Squalene is a skin and hair moisturizer. This wonderful skin care ingredient regulates sebum/oil production in the skin and hair to combat oily as well as dry skin issues. Squalene also makes the hair softer.

• Chlorophyll is responsible for the rich green color of olive oil. Chlorophyll promotes the healing of wounds and skin conditions.

Vitamin K heals spider veins, bruises, scars, and reduces the appearance of redness in the skin also known as rosacea.

Polyphenols are a botanical ingredient rich in antioxidants that fight free radicals. The ingredient also repairs cellular damage caused by toxins in the body and environment.

Castor Oil

Castor oil helps heal acne through its ability to inhibit bacterial growth. It penetrates deep into the lower skin layers to restore youthfulness to the skin as well as prevent aging and wrinkles. One common aging symptom healed by castor oil application is liver spots, also called age spots. Like olive oil, all castor oils are best when cold-pressed. Castor oil detoxifies the tissues and increases blood circulation in the skin while delivering nutrients to it. The deep penetration of the oil aids in the healing of scars and wounds.

Castor oil prevents hair loss and aids in the regeneration of sparse or thinning hair. It also keeps the scalp from becoming dry and it thickens the hair. Castor oil is a natural humectant. It draws moisture from the air to the skin and hair, combating split ends and damage to the hair shaft.

Meadowfoam Seed Oil

Meadowfoam seed oil revitalizes dry skin and holds moisture longer than most oils. This oil is an emollient so it contributes shine and softness. Meadowfoam seed oil also contains very high levels of vitamin E. Although this oil is not commonly found in commercial products, it’s one of the best moisturizers Mother Nature has to offer.

If the natural ingredients are not listed on the packaging as one of the first three ingredients, chances are there are some notso-natural fillers in the product that may block some of the nutrients and vitamins from being effective. Ingredients are always listed in descending order. So, if the natural oil is listed last instead of first this is a telltale sign that other ingredients such as mineral oil and petrolatum are contained in the product and could counteract the moisturizing benefits of the oils. Be sure to keep it simple. Too many ingredients may cause allergic reactions.

Treating the Special Skin Care Needs of Women and Men of Color

As

multicultural populations increase from 30 percent of the U.S. population to an estimated 50 percent by mid-century (or sooner) the need for knowledgeable, skilled professionals, as well as unique products and services that work for the special skin needs of women and men of color is also increasing.

Dermatologists who specialize in the treatment of skin of color are becoming experts on acid peels, lasers and special medications.

An association for dermatologists, The Skin of Color Society was established in 2004 to promote excellence. It notes that AfricanAmericans, Latinos, Asians, Native Indians and Pacific Islanders have unique skin. Other associations, like the Women’s Dermatologic Society, have Web sites dedicated to sourcing multicultural skin specialists.

Schools including the University of Miami and hospitals like the Henry Ford Health System in southeastern Michigan have specialized skin clinics. Kathryn Leverette is an Oakland, Calif. clinician who addresses dark spots and scarring on brown skin. Global beauty giants including Johnson & Johnson, Procter and Gamble, and L’Oreal are spearheading national and global initiatives as well as developing advanced skincare products formulated to the special needs of skin of color. Together with leading dermatologists they are making inroads on meeting many new health and beauty needs of the changing face of America.

Retailers, marketers and merchandisers will want to become a part of this phenomenon. As they learn and understand more about the ethnic skin care category, they will be able to better connect with the needs of ethnic consumers. The results will be increased business, product sales and a growing market share.

The Skin of Color Society was established in 2004 and is committed to the education of health care providers and the general public on dermatologic health issues related to skin of color. Society activities include an annual scientific symposium, awards research grants, culturally sensitive patient brochures and a semi-annual publication promoting exchange of professional information.

The society established the AMBI® Research Award, an annual research grant ($15,000 each) to promote dermatology research within the field of skin of color. The grant aim is to focus on issues specific to skin of color where further clinical and basic research is needed. The grant is also intended to assist a young dermatologist. The site hosts a physician-only education section.

In today’s economic climate, there are masses of people seeking a turnaround. Lives have been ruined by financial circumstances that have created challenges that many struggle to overcome. Layoffs, downsizing, mortgage foreclosures, declining 401K plans, among others, have all contributed to a general malaise in the workplace and in the personal lives of many. Many managers are afraid to add to the emotional burdens of a workforce that is already seeing unprecedented hardship. They may even be experiencing many of the same difficulties themselves. As a result, the courage to pursue a turnaround, both personally and professionally, is declining. Quite simply, many people are afraid of what the future might bring.

Unfortunately fear can be paralyzing. It can hold you back and keep you from realizing your optimum potential. Fear of change, of loss, of being wrong, or of being embarrassed, are examples of emotional barriers that can rob you of opportunities for happiness and success. These emotional barriers often get in the way of opportunities for positive change. Your ability to move through these barriers and to muster the courage to move beyond your fears is the hallmark of an effective manager.

Courage isn’t something that just happens. Courage is a lot like a muscle. To have strong courage through your leadership challenges, you must develop the attitude, skill and ability to use it. Here are five attitudes that can help you develop your courage muscle: 46

Know yourself.

It’s difficult to have courage when you’re unclear of your guiding values and principles. What do you stand for?

Being attuned to who you are is like the foundation of a house. It holds you firm when the demands of leadership challenge you.

Do what’s right,

not what feels good. Often, courage means making uncomfortable choices. A difficult decision won’t always feel good in the moment, but if you’re connected with your principles then you’ll know the right course of action. Always remember to maintain an ethical posture in these moments.

Be flexible

and open to change. If you find yourself saying, “But, we’ve always done it this way,” then you may really be responding to fear of change. Fear is the opposite of courage. Have the courage to corrupt the norm if it means a better outcome.

Accept criticism.

Naysayers abound, especially when faced with a leadership challenge. Listen to the critics; they may have a valid perspective on the situation. But always return to what’s right, both from an ethics and principles standpoint, and then choose.

Be willing to admit mistakes.

There may have been times when you courageously made what you thought was the best decision, only to find later that you were dead wrong. You’re human.

Mistakes are part of the territory. Be willing to admit when you’re wrong.

Those wrong turns are learning opportunities to be savored! Embrace them and choose to do differently next time.

Fear and uncertainty make it difficult for some to see beyond their immediate circumstances. When you walk into the grocery store, do you see more grumbling faces than smiles? On the way to work, do you notice the white-knuckle grip of commuters so wound up in stress that they use their vehicles to exert power, even if it’s just to be first at a stop light? They want to at least be ahead of someone.

Maybe you understand how they feel. You’ve probably lived through up times and down times yourself. Even so, as a leader, it’s your responsibility to lead your organization to success in spite of the difficulties that many employees may be experiencing personally. You can do this efficiently and effectively without losing appreciation for individual circumstances. It’s simply a byproduct of your attitude.

Instead of seeing the lack in a situation, seek out the opportunities. Rather than dwell on what’s wrong, affirm what is right.

Recognize that success is about what you can achieve collectively. These are the perspectives that can help you through even the most challenging times.

두려움이나 확신이 없다면 현재 상황의 다음을 예측할 수 없다. 식료품 스토어를 들어갔을 때 웃는 얼굴보다 찡그린 얼굴을 더 자주 보게 되나? 출근길의 첫 번째 신호등에서부터 핸들을 부여잡고 흥분한 얼굴로 차를 험하게 몰고 있는 사람들을 본적 있나? 그들은 한명이라도 더 제치려 하는 것이다.

그들의 심정을 이해할 수는 있을 것이다. 여러분 자신도 그러한 시간들을 보내봤을 것이다. 리더는 조직원들이 힘든 시간을 보내고 있더라도 그것을 이겨내게 만들어 조직을 성공으로 이끌고 나가야 한다. 개개인의 상황을 간과하지 않고 능률적이며 효과적으로 해낼 수 있는데, 이것은 여러분의 마음가짐에 달려있는 것이다.

Business Tips and “mind training” to choose differently. Sometimes you will fail. But most times, you will succeed in maintaining an attitude that makes a situation better, not worse.

You can create your own attitude for success. It takes practice and consistent effort, but it’s definitely possible and it starts with something very simple: Change what you feed your mind.

When you wake up in the morning, what is the first thing you feed your mind? Is it the morning news? Is it the worry of what the day will bring? Most people start their day with dreadful news, whether it comes from the media or internal thoughts. Choose differently. Tomorrow when you wake up try this: • Think of five things you appreciate and quietly say, “Thank you for…”

Starting with a perspective of gratitude for what you already have (even though it may not be perfect) trains your mind to see the good in your life.

• Next, think of your number one goal and decide on two to three actions—big or small—you’ll take to move you forward on that goal.

• Finally, spend 20 minutes reading something inspirational or motivating. Avoid the morning news or tabloid papers. Find a book, blog, or other resource that is positive and instructional.

Success and happiness are choices based on your attitude. A positive attitude frees the mind to be creative and to seek out and realize new opportunities. When life is spinning out of control, your attitude is the one thing you can control. So be courageous, take the reins and go after the results you desire! By doing so, you’ll be well on your way to creating a successful turnaround.

Overcoming Barriers to Technology Adoption

the past year, I’ve written articles suggesting the many ways you can use technology for your own personal benefit and within your organization. Many of you have accepted the challenge and adopted new methods.

But many more may still be reluctant to “take the plunge” or may want to help others overcome their fears.

난 몇 년간 나는 여러분들의 이익과 조직 내에서 사용할 수 있는 테크놀로지를 추천해 주는 많은 글을 써왔다. 많은 사람들이 새로운 기술을 받아들였다. 하지만 더 많은 사람들이 아직 새로운 것을 꺼리고 있거나 두려워하고 있어 그들이 두려움을 극복할 수 있도록 도와주고 싶다.

First, acknowledge the issues. 첫째, 인식이 문제이다.

There is a serious divide between those that embrace technology and those that minimize or fear technology. The major issues are the following: • Lack of keyboarding skills • Not aware of basic commands that dramatically simplify work • Concern that making mistakes will lead to disasters they can’t fix • Inability to execute basic tasks due to lack of proper software or equipment

Sure, there are psychological issues regarding resistance to change or fear of the unknown, but in most of my discussions with reluctant technology users, I find the one or more of the issues above are involved.

Overcoming these obstacles is not hard. Here are some suggestions you can use to help yourself or others overcome them.

물론, 변화를 거부하거나 모르는 것에 대해 겁을 내는 심리적인 문제도 있지만, 얘기를 나눠본 대부분의 테크놀로지를 거부하는 사람들은 위에 나열한 사항 중 한 두 가지에 해당하는 이유를 가지고 있었다.

이러한 장애물을 극복하기는 어렵지 않다. 다음은 여러분들이 그러한 두려움을 극복할 수 있게 해 주는 몇 가지 제안들이다.

No. 1: Acknowledge basic skill deficiencies.

Many reluctant users complain that they never learned to use a keyboard. If an individual didn’t learn to type in school or through job training, it’s not too late to learn. There are many Web sites like www.freetypinggame.net that make it fun and easy to learn keyboarding that you can do on your own. Another classic learning technique is to have users play a game like solitaire on the computer to get comfortable using the mouse and learning how to “drag and drop” objects on the screen. Other important tasks include learning how to get on the Internet; learning how to attach other devices like printers; and learning how to print documents.

It is essential that people have these basic skills in hand before computers become labor-saving tools.

No. 2: Learn the basic commands that dramatically save time.

Many people assume that once someone starts using a computer that they’ve mastered the most useful commands. Often, that’s not the case. For example, by far the most powerful, labor-saving command on a personal computer is the copy/paste command (Ctrl-C to copy; Ctrl-V to paste), yet, I have talked to many computer users who learned to use PCs as adults who never use that command. Likewise, I meet people who are frustrated with texting on their cell phone, and they don’t know that practically all cell phones now have built-in programs that automatically correct words while you’re texting. No wonder some people hate technology! Without knowing some of these simple rules, using technology is tedious and frustrating. Other commands that are absolutely critical to know are: the undo command (Ctrl-Z), which erases something you’ve done in error; and spell-check (Ctrl-F7), which corrects both grammar and spelling errors automatically.

No. 3: Embrace trial and error learning.

Most learning systems these days encourage trial and error techniques to solve problems. But that’s not the way many of us learned things when growing up. I can remember writing essays in pen and having to be very careful with every word I wrote because I couldn’t erase them. Or, if I was trying to learn something mechanical, I was always afraid of doing something wrong, knowing that a mistake could cause irreversible damage.

Computers changed all that. Everything now can be undone. With many computer programs, they expect people to learn by experimenting.

So, we have to adapt to this new learning style. No longer are you able to just read a manual, follow step-by-step instructions and figure everything out.

If you notice a teenager or younger child on the computer, you’ll see how quickly they learn something by trying different techniques over and over, not worrying if they get it wrong the first time. That’s the new learning style and technology usage requires this new approach.

컴퓨터가 그 모든 것들을 바꿔 버렸다. 이제는 모든 것을

되돌릴 수 있다. 많은 프로그램들은 사람들이 시도를 해 보면서 배울 수 있게 만들어 졌다. 우리는 이러한 새로운 교육방식을 받아 들어야 한다. 설명서를 읽고, 하나 하나의 과정을 거쳐 모든 것을 배울 필요가 없어졌다. 십대들이나 어린 아이들이 컴퓨터를 할 때, 잘못 될 것에 대한 두려움 없이 다른 테크닉을 계속해서 사용하여 얼마나 빨리 습득하는지를 볼 수 있을 것이다. 그것이 새로운 교육 스타일이며, 테크놀로지는 이러한 방식을 필요로 한다.

Technology Talk No. 4: Find a comfortable method for getting technical support.

Another thing many adults hate is asking someone for help. With technology, it’s important to feel comfortable to rely on some method of getting your questions answered. Everyone has a different comfort level about what is best for them. Some people like to look things up and learn for themselves. For those people I suggest using search engines to ask questions. For others, I suggest finding a trusted friend or relative you can call. And for others, you can rely on phone support, which comes at a price but offers guidance and the ability for them to show you how to do something by taking control of your computer.

But the important thing is to accept the need for ongoing support and shed the feeling of shame to ask others for help.

No. 5: Don’t use substandard equipment.

As with any task, it’s important to have the right equipment. With technology, that means having the right hardware and software.

Computer technology improves every 18 months and generally those improvements make things easier. Also, new software is made to run on new hardware. So you can create problems for yourself if you try to save too much money.

This doesn’t mean that you have to buy the latest and greatest and constantly update your system. It just means you have to make sure you have what it takes to do the task at hand. For new users it’s even more important to avoid frustration when things don’t work the way you thought they would.

No. 6: Back up data.

The number one fear of most new computer users is losing their data. There are many ways to avoid this. I have mentioned some in previous columns. However, most people overlook this problem and have a major data loss at some point in their lives. This discourages users from trusting computers. So, make sure this doesn’t impact your use of technology by constantly saving your data and backing it up on another storage device or over the Internet.

I am confident that following this advice will significantly improve your ability to take advantage of technology without fear.

Your success as a business owner or professional depends on it.

No. 5: 수준 미달의 장비를 사용하지 말아라. 어떠한 작업을 하던, 그에 합당한 장비를 갖는 것은 중요하다. 테크놀로지 측면에서는 맞는 하드웨어와 소프트웨어를 말하는 것이다. 컴퓨터 테크놀로지는 일반적으로 매 18개월 마다 향상되고 있으며, 이러한 개발은 더욱 편리함을 제공해 준다. 또한, 새로운 소프트웨어는 새로운 하드웨어에 맞춰 만들어진다. 따라서 너무 아끼려 한다면 여러분 자신에게 손해가 될 수도 있다.

Understanding the skincare needs of women and men of color First it was hair care. Then it was cosmetics 처음엔 헤어케어였다. 그 다음은 화장품이었고, for people of color. Today it’s skin care. It’s really true that “skin is in.”

There has never been a time when so many new and wonderful skin care products for people of color have been available including overthe-counter products to lighten dark spots, a common problem for those with brown skin. There are moisturizers for the face that come with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF). There are cleansers that include alphahydroxy acids to help even out skin tone.

In the early 1900s hair care was the pioneer in the ethnic health and beauty category as Madame C.J. Walker created products to meet the needs of African-American women’s unique hair textures and scalp problems. In the 60s women of color, like the late black supermodel Naomi Sims, altered over the counter makeup to suit their own skin tones. There are 35 skin tone shades for women of color from café au lait to blue black. As manufacturers became increasingly aware of these special makeup needs of women of color, new products hit the market. Finally, the skin care category heard the cry of the ethnic consumer, “Our skin is not like everyone else’s.

We have special needs.” General market manufacturers rolled out skin care lines as they realized this key category was multiplying, and multicultural populations were increasing in the U.S. and abroad.

Ethnic manufacturers like Summit Laboratories, Dudley Products and Johnson Publishing’s Fashion Fair cosmetics had successfully met hair and cosmetic needs for people of color and they began to extend their lines to skin care.

Feature New Steps in Facial Skin Care

Women of color, like all women in the general market, are learning key steps in skin care. In 1994 Black Opal launched the first technologically advanced, doctor-recommended, mass market skin care line for women of color. It sent trainers to beauty stores to teach three steps of facial care: “Cleanse.

Tone. Moisturize.” The company introduced black women to exfoliation products which sloughed off dead skin cells. They instructed on the need to “tone” using a toner or astringent to absorb oil and prevent breakouts. Finally, they promoted a moisturizer for the face and hands.

African-American women and men need no convincing when it comes to moisturization. Even those who tend to have oily skin often experience dryness on other parts of their body.

Because dry, ashy skin (the appearance of grayness on skin) is a major problem, slathering an oil-based moisturizer onto the face may be tempting, but it really doesn’t get to the heart of the problem shared clinician Kathryn Leverette, owner of Urban Skin Solutions in Oakland, Calif.

“You have to keep in mind that ashy skin appears dry because it lacks water, not oil,” said Leverette, who has worked with well known people of color like Danny Glover at her clinic. “Efforts should be aimed at gentle exfoliation and replacing water in the stratum corneum (upper layer of skin) as well as the immediate environment.” Leverette added that after hydration, a sealant should be used to lock in the moisture “The only thing accomplished by a coating of oil or nonexfoliating lotion is a temporary relief of the tight dry feeling and ‘ashy’ appearance. This oil mats down the dead skin cells under a layer of emollient and gives the skin a shiny lubricated appears that only lasts a short time.”

Uneven Skin Tone, Dark Spots and Dryness are Major Problems

In addition to dryness, dark skin is prone to uneven skin tone and dark spots known as hyperpigmentation. There are many causes of these spots, including acne, injuries and medications.

skin type,” noted Dr. Susan C. Taylor, dermatologist and author of Brown Skin: Dr. Susan C. Taylor’s Prescription for Flawless Skin, Hair and Nails.

Sunburn can cause dark spots or make current spots darker. “It is a common myth that people of color do not need sunscreen,” noted dermatologist Valerie Callender, M.D., who operates the Callendar Skin and Laser Center in the Washington, D.C. metro area. While white skin turns red when it is burned by the sun’s UVA and UVB rays, “black skin turns blacker when it is damaged,” noted Dr. Neil Persadsingh, a founding member of the Dermatological Association of Jamaica and the Caribbean Dermatological Association.

Because this is such an issue, women of color often look for skin care products that will help them deal with hyperpigmentation. Products equipped with hydroquinone, a dermatologist recommended ingredient, can help safely fade these spots. Consumers should check the concentration.

“High concentrations ranging from 6 to 10 percent can result in a condition that causes darkening of the skin,” noted Dr. Taylor. “Although such side effects are rare in the United States, they may begin to become more prevalent as the number of immigrants increase, particularly from Africa and the Caribbean.” Dr. Taylor shared that these countries have products with high concentrations of hydroquinone. It is generally recognized that over-the-counter products that have 1 to 2 percent hydroquinone are safe. Dermatologists can prescribe higher amounts of hydroquinone—3 to 4 percent— as they monitor their patients’ progress. Another ingredient to watch out for is mercury-based skin lightening products. Dr. Taylor noted they have the potential to cause severe kidney problems.

Though it may sound unusual, acids can be good for the skin. Acids like alphahydroxy acid and salicylic acid, often made from natural products—fruit—can help keep acne-prone skin clear. Other natural ingredients in skin care products include vitamins C, E, and soy. Cocoa butter is a sought after ingredient and may have something to do with the popularity of Queen Helene and E.T. Browne/Palmer’s brands which prominently display that ingredient on their skin care products. The good news is that more and more products are being formulated with ingredients that will truly meet the special and unique skin care needs of people of color.

OTC Beauty Magazine (OTC): Please tell our readers a little bit about your day-to-day role with Luster Products. How did you get started with this organization and the beauty industry?

LP: I started with Luster Products six years ago as a senior brand manager working on the Pink Traditional and Pink ShortLooks Brand. Since this time I have worked on numerous brands including S-Curl and Designer Touch, served as the project leader for the development and launch of a new product line Renutrients, as well as scripting and co-producing hair makeover segments for television.

I have been the director of marketing for Luster Products since November 2006. My day-to-day responsibilities include planning and executing product promotions, consumer promotions, new product development, consumer communications production, establishing pricing strategies and managing a diverse group of team members.

OTC: Our readers may or may not know that Luster Products is a family business. Can you give them a brief history about the company and how it came about?

LP: Luster Products is an African-American- and family-owned company headquartered on the South Side of Chicago that has been manufacturing quality ethnic personal care products for more than 50 years.

The company was established in 1957 in Chicago by the late Fred Luster, Sr., a successful hairstylist who was inspired to develop a line of hair care products that would cater specifically to the health and maintenance of the hair of African-Americans. Luster Products, Inc. is the leading African-American- and family-owned and operated manufacturer of premium personal care products for people of African descent worldwide.

Today, the legacy started by Fred Luster, Sr., is being preserved by members of the Luster family, including owners Jory Luster, president of Luster Products, Freddie Luster, II, executive vice president and director of research and development for Luster Products and Sonja Luster-Munis, vice president of systems and administration for Luster Products.

LP: What creates and sustains demand for our products, including Luster’s Pink Brand Smooth Touch, is the benefits and solutions they deliver to consumers. From the beginning, our business has been about making reliable, quality products that cater to our customers’ needs.

Having celebrities such as LeToya Luckett as Smooth Touch celebrity endorsers has helped increase visibility and awareness of the brand, but careful planning went into our decision to work with them. Specifically, we want a celebrity endorser who is relevant to the Smooth Touch target, girls and women ages 16 to 24, and a spokeswoman who is relevant to the brand messaging. We have been extremely pleased with our relationship and are looking forward to working with LeToya.

OTC: Please explain how your OTC store partners can benefit from carrying this celebrity-endorsed line in their stores.

LP: The high profile of Smooth Touch featuring the new fresh face of the brand, LeToya Lucket, breaks through the clutter of messaging to the young adult female consumer. This consumer then actively begins her search for the stores in her area that carry the Smooth Touch relaxer kit and styling product. As an OTC store, you want to make sure that you can satisfy her product purchase needs.

OTC: With so many different hair care maintenance and relaxer lines of tools available to the consumer market, what makes Luster stand out? What is the company’s point of difference?

LP: Luster Products has been in business for 53 years. We specialize in understanding the needs and wants of the target consumer and developing innovative solutions to meet and exceed their hair care needs. Luster Products was the originator of the oil moisturizer category with the launch of Luster’s Pink Oil Moisturizer Lotion over 42 years ago. This focus on innovation continues today with the recent introduction of ShortLooks Colorlaxer Kits and the Renutrients Slick Stick.

Luster Products remains true to our family values in how we service our accounts, supporting community initiatives and deliver the highest quality of hair care products for the entire family worldwide. OTC: What are some of the newest items available from Luster Products? What tips do you have to help retailers incorporate these new items into their product offering?

LP: Some of the newest items available include the ShortLooks Colorlaxer kits—in Diamond Black, Passion Red and Sable Brown—system of conditioning, relaxing and applying semi-permanent color all in one easy step.

One tip I have for the retailer is to stock this item both in the relaxer section and hair color sections of the store. This way, they can maximize their sales by positioning this product in the store aisles to align with its unique selling points. What makes it so compelling to customers is that they can relax and color their hair at the same time.

OTC: Can you tell us a little bit about the point-of-purchase display material that you have available to OTC stores?

These elements focus on communicating at a glance what is so special about our products and encourage trial and repeat purchases.

OTC: What changes have you noticed in your category as the economy has changed over the last couple of years?

LP: Because of the current economic situation and all of the uncertainty we’re seeing, consumers have become more discerning and frankly, cautious, about the dollars they spend. Things such as value and quality are top of mind for consumers. We know that to remain competitive now and during more certain economic conditions, value and quality must continue to be top of mind at Luster Products in all that we do.

OTC: How do you determine when the time is right to add new product offerings to Luster?

LP: Several factors drive our decision to add a new product such as emerging hair trends, competitive landscape, market research that identifies a gap in fulfilling consumer needs and Luster Products research and development department’s continuous product development work as they pursue new technology as a means of developing products to test.

OTC: What kinds of educational material does Luster Products provide to retail partners? Does this material educate the storeowner, the consumer or both?

LP: For such innovative products like ShortLooks Colorlaxer, a “how-to” video is available for the retail partner to run live in-store. Luster Products traditionally provides information cards, brochures and other training materials. We also execute in-store promotions and provide support personnel to execute one-on-one product demos with store staff and consumers OTC: What type of presence does Luster Products have on the Internet and how has it helped facilitate the success of the brand?

LP: Consumers are becoming more and more technologically advanced.

They continue to use the Internet as a major source for product news and information. The Luster Products Web site is our center for product and promotional information worldwide. We highlight each product

along with tips, how-to information and hairstyling trends. All of our advertising, collateral materials and product packaging promotes accessing our Web site for more information. In addition, we partner with other relevant media partners virally to further generate interest and promote our brand news. For example, the S-Curl brand is co-partnering with XXL magazine to execute a “New Look of Luster” packaging design contest which is being supported via a special co-branded Web page.

Luster Products listened to the consumer challenge of having healthy hair and wearing contemporary hair styles at the same time with the development of the Renutrients product line. 닐봉지와 아스팔트. 언뜻 보면 서로 연관이 전혀 없어 보이지만 이들에게도 공통점이 있다. 바로 석유 에서 추출한 원료로 만들었다는 것이다. 이처럼 일반적인 시각으로 봤을 때는 보이지 않는 것들이 세

상에는 많이 있다. 우리는 정형화된 생각에 자신을 가둬놓고 길이 없다고만 푸념을 하는 경우가 많다. 수 많은 종류의 비즈니스들도 겉으로 보기에는 모두 다를 것 같지만 그들에게서도 무수히 많은 공통점을 찾을 수 있 다. 만약 모두 제각각 이었다면 대학에서 비즈니스나 마케팅이라는 전공 자체가 존재할 수 없었을 것이다. 본 질적인 것을 본다면 많은 것에서 공통점을 찾을 수 있을 것이다. 이번 달에 OTC에서 인터뷰한, SNELLVILLE, GA에 위치한 Sassy Beauty Supply의 전윤기사장은 경영을 함에 있어서 본질적인 것을 보는 시각을 가지고 있다. 때문에 그의 머릿속에는 늘 새로운 아이디어로 가득 차 있다. 그와 눈높이를 맞춰 보도록 하자.

다양한 경험 92년도에 가족과 함께 도미한 전사장 은 어렸을 때부터 많은 아르바이트를 해 왔다고 한다. 청소, 세탁소, 뷰티 서 플라이 스토어 아르바이트, 융자 전문 인 등 그 분야도 매우 다양하다. 자칫 하면 이도 저도 아닌 경험들로 될 수 있었던 것들을, 각 분야의 장점과 연 관성을 찾아 현재 스토어 운영에 접목 시키려 노력하고 있는 모습이 역력했 76

다. 특히 고등학교 시절 대형 세탁소에 서 일을 했던 경험은 지금 스토어를 운 영하는데 많은 도움이 되고 있다고 한 다. “세탁소와 뷰티 서플라이 운영의 가장 큰 연관성은 고객관리 입니다” 라는 전사장은 세탁소 사장님의 특별 한 고객관리 방법을 현재의 스토어에 서 행하고 있다. 물론 엄청난 시행착오 를 겪기도 했다고 한다. “비즈니스는 업종에 관계없이 다 비슷합니다” 라는

믿음을 갖고 있는 전사장은, 타업종에 종사하는 사람들, 심지어는 한국에 있 는 사람들과도 경영에 대한 많은 대화 를 아직도 나누고 있다고 한다. 아무리 다른 업종이라도 사람을 상대하여 수 익을 창출 한다는 기본적인 틀이 같은 이상, 서로 연관성을 찾아 낸다는 것이 불가능한 일만은 아닐 것이다.

스토어 공간 활용

고객의 눈높이에 맞춰라

스토어 위치 선정 시 중요한 요소 중 하나는 스토어 주변의 유동인구이다. 전사장은 이에 동의 하면서 그만의 의견을 덧 붙였다. “무조건 큰길에 있다고 다 좋은 것은 아닙니다. 앞 쪽에 큰길이 있으면 옆에는 2차선 도로가 있는 것이 더욱 유 리합니다” 라며, 그러한 조건이 운전자 들에게 훨씬 편리한 통행을 유도할 수 있다고 한다. 실제로 Sassy Beauty Supply는 그러한 조건을 갖춘 몰 안에 위치해 있었다. 2007년부 터 운영을 하기 시작하여 3년째 운영 중인 현재의 스토어는 2,200 sq ft의 넓지도 좁지도 않은 크기이다. 하지만 실제로 보이는 스토어의 크기는 그 보다 훨씬 넓어 보였다. “기본적 으로 천장이 높아서 넓어 보이긴 하지만, 보통 스토어의 2배 에 가까운 조명과 제품의 배치를 조정하여 좀더 넓어 보이 도록 만들었습니다” 라는 전사장의 스토어는 흡사 보석상을 연상시킬 정도의 밝은 조명들이 스토어 안을 비추고 있어 쇼 핑객들에게 쾌적한 환경을 만들어 주고 있다. 또한, 공간이 넓지 않은 것을 극복하기 위해 조금 고가의 상품들을 구비하 였다고 한다. 물론 고가의 상품만을 가지고 있다고 해서 수 익이 올라가는 것은 아니지만, 지역의 특성과 고객들의 성 향을 잘 파악하고 있었던 전사장은 승산이 있다는 판단 하에 결정을 내리고 실행에 옮겨 좋은 결과를 만들어 내었다.

주위에는 2개 정도의 동 업종 스토어가 있다고 한다. 전사장 은 “처음에는 가격도 맞춰보려고 했지만 답이 아니라는 결 론을 내린 후부터는 생각을 바로 접었습니다” 라고 한다. 대 신 고객 서비스를 중점적으로 한 경영을 하려고 노력하고 있 다고 한다. “카메라가 저의 눈이 되어주고, VIP 카드는 훌륭 한 세일즈맨 역할을 하고 있습니다” 라는 전사장은, 손실의 우려 때문에 스토어 안에서 손님을 졸졸 따라 다니는 것은 소비자들에게 상당한 불쾌감을 줄 수 있다고 한다. 또한 VIP 카드를 사용하여 물건을 구입하는 고객들의 정보를 받아 놓 으면 나중에 훌륭한 마케팅 자산이 된다고 한다. 또 한가지, 인터뷰 하는 도중 전사장은 손님들이 구매하는 물건을 여러 번 계산해 주었는데, 손님에게 받은 돈은 제쳐두고 손님의 거스름돈을 항상 먼저 챙겨준 후 받은 돈을 정리 하였다. 사 소한 것이었지만 고객이 먼저라는 전사장의 마음이 고스란 히 묻어 있었다.

전사장은 제품지식에 대한 중요성 또한 빠트리지 않 았다. “제품에 대한 많은 정보들을 잡지를 통해 얻고 있습니 다. 그리고 시간이 있으면 제품에 표기된 레이블을 읽어 보 는데, 그러다 보면 몰랐던 제품의 다른 용도를 알아내기도 합니다” 라며 고객의 입에서 ‘아’가 나오면 ‘어’로 바로 대답 할 수 있어야 한다고 한다.

Sassy 만의 마케팅 법 새로운 제품을 선정 할 때는 여러 가지 상황을 고려한다고 한 다. “이름이 알려진 브랜드에서 새로운 제품을 출시하면 회사 는 그에 따른 홍보 활동을 합니다. 그러면 고객들에게 제품에 대한 인지도를 높일 수 있습니다” 라며 포스터나 샘플 등, 마 케팅 자료들을 최대한 이용해야 한다고 한다. 하지만 그렇지 않은 제품일 경우, 자신이 직접 프린트를 하고 엔드 유닛을 이 용하는 등 스토어 내에서 고객들에게 따로 홍보를 한다고 한 다. 제품이나 스토어의 홍보는 책이나 인터넷 매체를 통해 섭 렵한 방법들을 사용한다고 한다. “마케팅은 대기업들이 하는 방법을 많이 따라 하는 편입니다. 많은 돈을 투자한 만큼, 어 느 정도 검증이 된 방법이 아니겠습니까?” 라며 이를 무작정 따라 하는 것이 아니라 스토어의 환경에 맞춰 약간 변형 시킨 후 사용한다고 한다.

인인 것이 기본적인 이유이다. 하지만, 주변 동 업종 스토어들 은 모두 일요일에 오픈을 하므로 표면적인 손해가 있을 수 밖 에 없다. 당일 매상은 물론이고, 손님을 빼앗긴다는 생각도 들 수 있다. 하지만 전사장은 이에 대해 조금 다른 생각을 가지 고 있었다. “고객들이 불편해하기는 하지만 기독교를 믿는 고 객들에게는 더욱 신뢰를 줄 수도 있습니다” 라며 보이지 않는 이익을 창출해 내고 있을 것이라 믿고 있었다. 물론 계산을 한 것은 아니겠지만, 순간 이는 유명한 ‘Chick-Fil-A’ 의 경영 방 침을 벤치한 것이 아닌가 하는 생각이 스쳤다.

현재 미혼인 전사장은 “바쁘게 일하다 보니 아직 결 혼을 하지 못했습니다. 곧 해야겠지요” 라고 말하며, 정작 가 까운 계획이 무엇이냐고 묻는 질문에는 “직원들의 복지를 향 상시켜 주고 싶습니다” 라고 답하는 따뜻한 사람이기도 하다. 전사장은 마지막으로 동 업종에 종사하는 사람들과 많은 교류 를 하고 싶다는 말을 전하였다. 끊임없이 노력하는 전사장의 앞날에 좋은 결과가 있기를 기대해 본다.

Mr. Tae H. Jhin

On October 13, Jinny Corp. employees at all five locations—Chicago, Atlanta, Miami, Dallas and Los Angeles—paused to pay respect and remember Mr. Tae H. Jhin. October marked the four-year anniversary of Jhin’s passing.

At each location, prayers were recited in Korean and English, to recognize the diversity of Jinny Corp. and ensure that all in attendance had an opportunity to participate in the memorial ceremony. Candles and incense were lit near photos of Jhin as employees gathered together in his memory.

Jhin, the founder of Jinny Corp., is credited with creating the new channel of distribution that paved the way for thousands of beauty supply stores to open nationwide. Jhin’s impact on the multicultural OTC industry is evidenced today by the fact that independent supply stores continue to open their doors for business. Jhin’s personal dream is also being recognized as Jinny Corp. has continued to expand its reach worldwide.

In addition to opening the doors of Jinny Corp., Jhin also created OTC Beauty Magazine, which was first published in 2002. Jhin recognized the need for an outlet that could educate and inform every member of the multicultural beauty and barber supply industry.

n October 3 at the Ft. Lauderdale War Memorial in Florida, the Jinny Corp. Miami location officially opened the company’s fall show season. The Jinny staff and participating vendors were on hand early to welcome 550 attendees that came from locations far and wide. Stores were represented domestically from 180 stores and internationally from 22 different countries.

The Jinny Miami location experienced a great turnout that was reflected in the show’s sale numbers. “This show exceeded our all-time record in sales at JBS! The previous record was broken by

almost double,” shared Eddie Jhin, president, Jinny Corp. “Based on total dollars, we received more orders from international and domestic customers than ever before at any fall show in Miami,” he added.

The customers in attendance at the Miami show were treated to the full Jinny experience, including exclusive show pricing, show deals, a hot lunch and the chance to win a bevy of different prizes. Overall, Jhin felt that the success of the Jinny Miami show to begin the fall season was “very encouraging.”

n October 10, one week after the Jinny Miami show, the Jinny Los Angeles branch hosted the location’s firstever fall show. The Jinny Los Angeles Fall Show, held at the Shrine Auditorium, offered an opportunity for Jinny’s newest customers to find out about new products, pick up samples to distribute at their stores and of course, purchase products offered at special show prices.

Although foot traffic was a slightly lighter at the Los Angeles show compared to the record-setting Miami show,

customers were still excited and eager to see what products were available to them. For some attendees, this was their first Jinny show so their excitement was built upon not only by the show deals offered, but the Jinny Money raffle and other prizes that were offered by some of the vendors at the event. In addition to Jinny Money, other participating vendors offered prizes such as an iPod, awarded

by Doo Gro/Nature’s Protein and a GPS unit, awarded by Creme of Nature.

he fashion and salon industry collided yet again on October 3 as Salons Unlimited Magazine hosted its 3rd Annual Flashing Lights Hair and Trend Release Event. This year’s installment of Flashing Lights welcomed 10 professional beauty salons and a bevy of sponsors to the first ever cash-andcarry edition of the event. Held in downtown Atlanta at the historic Freight Depot, salons came from as far away as Hinesville, Ga. to show off their artistic flair to an enthusiastic crowd of over 650.

The theme for Flashing Lights was “A Tribute to Hollywood,” which challenged each salon to create a runway show complete with a cohesive hair, makeup and wardrobe look based on their interpretation of a film. The salons tested their creative skill by interpreting movies such as Transformers, Avatar, Mahogany, Dreamgirls, Chicago and more.

Event attendees were treated to an eclectic mix of movie interpretations, complimentary food, a cash bar, a gift bag and also had the opportunity to purchase products from event sponsors.

Sponsors for the event included a mix of professional product companies and retail brands that used Flashing Lights as a way to connect with beauty professionals as well as consumers. 교수팀은 50~81세 여성 450명의 수면 시 간과 건강상태를 14년 동안 추적 조사했다. 그 결과 평균 5시간~6시간 30분 잠을 자는 여성이 가장 건강한 것으로 나타났다. 반면 5시간보다 적게 자거나 6시간 30분 이상 잔 여성은 오히려 덜 활기찬(alive) 모습을 보 였다. 크립케 교수는 “5~6시간 자는 것이 적다고 걱정하는 것이 오히려 건강에 영향 줄 수 있다”며 “이번 연구결과는 잠을 충분 히 자지 못한다고 걱정하는 사람들을 안심 시킬 수 있는 것”이라고 설명했다. 잠을 충 분히 자면 하룻동안 지친 몸의 피로를 회복 하고 세포가 재생산 되는 등 몸이 스스로의 기능을 유지할 수 있도록 도와준다. 그러나 잠이 부족하게 되면 혈압이 높아지고 체내 혈당이 높아져 동맥 손상 위험을 부른다. 이 연구결과는 ‘수면 의학’ 온라인 판에 게 재됐으며 영국 일간지 텔레그래프 온라인 판, 미국 온라인 과학뉴스 사이언스데일리 등이 보도했다.

음식’임을 재확인됐다. 서 교수 팀은 이밖에 삼겹살과 치즈 같 은 고지방 음식과 김, 미역 같 이 요오드 성분이 많은 해조류 도 여드름 발생에 큰 영향을 주 므로 가급적 많이 먹지 않는 게 좋다고 당부했다. 반면 여드름 이 없는 정상인들은 등푸른 생 선을 자주 섭취하고 규칙적인 식사습관을 가진 것으로 밝혀 졌다.
