ooking back at years gone by it is common to picture people from a specific era in their characteristic outfits and hairstyles (i.e. the flappers of the 20s, free spirits of the 70s and bright colors of the 80s). When my mind wanders to men of the past I instantly envision the 1960s characters of AMC’s TV series “Mad Men.” These dapper businessmen are clad in sharp suits and ties with their hair meticulously sculpted with the best pomade money can buy. Your mind may race to bell-bottom pants wearers or even bleached jean sporters. No matter what men you think of first, the important fact is that there is some manly style that sticks out to you.

You see, men have always been consumers within the beauty industry. They may not make up as large a part of the customer base as women do, but they do make a dent. This is why it is important to always make men feel welcome in your store. Gentlemen themselves may not frequently explore the aisles of your establishment, but undoubtedly their wives or girlfriends shop for them there. After all, their shaving supplies and hair gels have to come from somewhere.

In this issue we cover an array of men-geared topics including shaving practices, its necessary tools and why keeping them effectively sanitized is important. Turn on the Charm All too often, when asked, “How does he look?” The answer

may be, “He’s funny and charming,” to compensate for a less than stellar appearance. Others would contradict that statement saying that the shave brush is an essential tool to achieving a close, smooth shave. In the United States men’s grooming has become more prevelant and is not just considered a daily necessity, but an asthetic. The shave brush is a tool that helps to achieve a closer, smoother shave and should be considered an essential to a man’s grooming regimen. Today, the shave brush is still popular due to the benefits it has and dispite the technologies of today’s modern world. Over the years the shave brush has never really changed from its simple design.

The modern day shave brush originates from France.

The earliest shave brushes were made out of badger hair and their handles were as simple as wood or as eloborate as gold or ivory.

Shave brush handles were also seen as decorative and were set out as a display piece. Lower quality brushes were made with boar’s hair as a substitute, but badger hair was and is still considered the best to use on a shave brush because of its resiliancy. Badger hair doesn’t lose its shape and it has superior water retention. It also feels smoother on the face and builds a better lather. The higher the badger bristle load, the better the brush.

There are different qualities of badger hair that are used in a shave brush. Pure badger is is most commonly used followed by best badger. Super badger and silver tip badger are the most expensesive types of badger hair used and shave brushes can cost over $1,000.

Packaging has not changed much for the shave brush. A shave brush can be packaged in a box or a fabric drawstring bag. Some of the more expensive shave brushes can be seen in glass canisters, to show off their decorative quality.

HOW TO USE: When using a shave brush it is important to get the bristles wet and remove any excess water. Moisture in the bristles helps to build a better lather to apply evenly to the face.

1. Dip the shave brush in warm water, apply light pressure with fingers to draw excess water out of the bristles.

2. Apply the shave cream to the face using a circular motion with the brush.

3. Remove facial hair with razor.

4. Apply after shave lotion or balm.

The circular motion and the bristles act as an exfoliant to the skin.

The bristles get under the facial hair and lift it off the face so that a razor can remove the hair more smoothly. The pores also open up from exfoliation and lets moisture set in. This highly moisturized lather also allows for the razor to glide over the face. When using fingers to apply shave cream, it often causes the facial hair to get pressed down and therefore more pressure is applied to the razor for a closer shave. Lack of moisture creates a greater risk for razor burn.

The barbershop renaissance has taken hold

and men of all ages are once again flocking to the barbershop in droves to be treated to the most current look or a relaxing shave. It has been good barbershop tradition to assure that items used on more than one client are properly cleaned and disinfected after each use, but this procedure is even more important in today’s world where antibiotic resistance has made once simple infections potentially deadly. What was once simply called sanitation has become part of the bigger concept of Infection Control, that is, limiting the potential for exposure to pathogens for both the barber and the customer. As the risks become greater, consumer awareness is rising and your customers will be asking how you keep the shop clean and safe.

Luckily, effective Infection Control in the barbershop can be achieved in a few easy steps.

1. Determine what items are single-use (such as neck strips) and what items can and must be disinfected between customers. A simple rule of thumb is that disinfection is for non-porous items only. Laws in virtually all states require that multi-use items such as combs, clippers and shears be disinfected between customers and that single use items be thrown away in a covered trash container immediately after use.

A perfect example of this is the aerosols used to clean clippers. Many of these products are able to achieve cleaning and disinfecting at the same time since the aerosol action removes the surface debris. Another option is a chemical cleaner that allows for large batches of combs, for example, to be cleaned (not disinfected) at the same time!

3. After cleaning, items must be disinfected using a product approved in your state and mixed according to the manufacturer’s label. Items must be placed in the solution for the amount of time indicated on the label, which is generally 10 minutes.

Aftershaves & Antiseptics 애프터쉐이브와 소독제의 사용과 중요성 Shaving Fact: The term shave means to carve or scrape; Shaving is rather like scraping sandpaper over the face, robbing it of its protective layer of skin cells and sebum, each time revealing new and sensitive skin.

After Shaving Fact: It is a fact that 99 percent of men experience micro skin abrasions after shaving. The skin’s surface becomes irritated due to the loss of superficial skin after shaving. The epidermis layer (top layer of the skin) is responsible for the look and health of the skin as well as protecting it from moisture loss and penetration of product and bacteria. Removal of this layer from shaving with a razor, electric shaver or depilatories may increase penetration of bacteria through the skin causing razor bumps and other skin irritations. This is why we depend on aftershaves and antiseptics after shaving or being shaved.

Antiseptics are substances that may kill, retard or prevent the growth of bacteria and can generally be safely used on the skin. Because they are weaker than disinfectants, antiseptics are not effective for use on implements and surfaces. Hydrogen peroxide, 50-60% isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol and ethyl (also called ethanol SD Alcohol) are some examples of antiseptics.

There are many types of alcohols used in science and manufacturing. The two most common forms utilized by barbers are ethyl alcohol (ethanol SD Alcohol) and isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol. In the barber shop, 70% ethyl alcohol or 99% isopropyl alcohol products may be used to disinfect implements such as shears, razors and glass 36

A 50-60% isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol may be used on the skin as an antiseptic. However, after 21 years of research and experience I know for a fact that many of the clients serviced in barbershops and beauty salons cannot tolerate the harshness of isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol after getting shaved or trimmed. This is because of either the drying effects or the burning and/or stinging pain it causes when applied to their skin. One hundred percent of children disapprove of alcohol-based formula antiseptics after being trimmed with trimmers.

A Matter of Preference With this known fact exposed, OTC stores can now offer an alternative solution. There is a new kid on the block: a new antiseptic containing benzalkonium chloride (No Burn solution). As an antiseptic, it has the advantage of not burning when put on a wound, which is not the case with alcohol-based antiseptics. As the antiseptic in Bactine, benzalkonium chloride has been used safely for decades on childhood scrapes and cuts. Kids love the no burn alternative!

Although benzalkonium chloride antiseptics work effectively as an antiseptic, most men in the barbershop still prefer the hot stuff (alcohol based antiseptics) with a manly scent. Many feel that if it doesn’t burn then it doesn’t work. They need to feel the heat!

The true professional barber will pay a few dollars more for a great aftershave product as opposed to the less expensive isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol antiseptic. He or she is concerned about the best possible skin care that will give their clients a refreshing finished service and keep them coming back.

Chemical relaxer burns occur when the scalp is exposed to lye or no-lye relaxers for a long amount of time. Many hairstylists will treat the scalp by using a cotton ball or piece of cloth to apply antiseptic and prevent infection of the wound.

As you can see, the use and importance of aftershaves and antiseptics is very important to the hairstylists and barbers that visit OTC stores to purchase supplies. They are professionals and they recognize that their clients are entitled to every possible protection against infection and contagions while in their establishments. The average barber and hairstylist will use one to two bottles of antiseptic or aftershave per week. That’s a lot of antiseptic and aftershave being sold, so keep your shelves stocked and make your selections look appealing!

The truth is, even if the goal is not necessarily to be generous (as we think of it), generosity can build sales. Coupons for free items, free bonus gifts and prizes have always worked to gain attention and build sales for products from cereal and soap to jewelry and big ticket items such as automobiles and even homes.

Remember, your bottom line may not only be measured by revenue received, but by resources shared. Generosity is a business vitamin that will build a healthier bottom line.

Some products that are salon exclusive will not have directions on the packaging. That’s because these items are designated to be used by individuals who have knowledge of scalp, hair, skin, the reaction of chemicals and time plus heat on them. Stylists attend schools, pay tuition and take a state mandated test to become licensed. In most states stylists must take Continuing Education Programs, provide proof of the same and pay state fees in order to maintain licensure. That’s the reason for the attitude.

Furthermore, manufacturers of salon exclusive products don’t want to make it easy for unlicensed consumers to use their products because it could destroy their customer base of Professional Licensed Consumers. Now here is the good news for OTC: Most salons in close proximity of the OTC will not retail product. So forging a good relationship with them could result in the stylist pointing them to your store for maintenance items.

It could result in higher profits for Stylist and OTC. Maintaining a database of stylists and the hair they like to work with is a very good idea for helping them maintain a quality level and save the OTC time in gathering items for sale. This promotes good relations between salons, stylists and OTCs. Again the opportunity for OTC is the maintenance items sales. This includes recommendations from the stylist towards premium brands that consumers concerned with price would not usually purchase and in some cases not even be aware of. A beautiful head of hair turns heads; the right color, correct cut and length for body shape, size and lifestyle are what stylists bring to the equation. Most stylists like to use more premium brands of hair. Usually the at-home consumer is concerned with price over quality, but stylists are always concerned with quality because it is their walking advertisement. Get to know the stylists in your area and forge a relationship with them. The payoff is a win-win.

3. Most stylists don’t retail products at the point of service. Having a good relationship with stylists could result in a referral for their clients to your store.

All kinds of clients come to salons for various types of visits. Some come for consultation, wanting to gain professional insight from a stylist on a wide range of questions relating to how to fine-tune appearance for employment, seasonal trend, a milestone birthday or other event. The stylist is not going to have everything that client needs or wants. It is 54

So again, knowing a stylist and having a good relationship can result in a better choice at the OTC. 4. Stylists are aware of product trends and can help with forecasting new products.

Who really saw the whole Natural thing coming? If you did, how were you able to capitalize on it? For the last three years African American women have been tossing weaves, wigs and forsaking relaxer for self fulfillment, better self image and cultural identity. This has led to questions flying all over the OTC about sulfates, mineral oil, petrolatum, parabens and a host of other “NO NO” ingredients that have fallen out of favor with Black consumers. Any stylist could have told you that under all those wigs and weaves women were transitioning to Natural.

Having a good relationship with an active stylist that stays relevant to product education as well as current professional and fashion trend releases will help OTCs understand what’s next.

5. When stylists and OTCs work together it is mutually beneficial.

In conclusion, the recent history of beauty in America has taught us that unless OTCs and stylists work together consumers will purchase on price alone. When this happens retail big box stores excel at the cash register with temporary price reductions (TPRs), clearance sales on some brands and in-the-aisle brand ambassadors leading consumers to one brand over another. Not to mention couponing, cash back and growing consumer savings awareness. So where is the advantage for OTCs? It’s where it has always been: stocking brands the big box doesn’t and a personal touch at the store level (if you don’t have it develop it). Most of all, the major driver of sales is the untapped and under developed power of a real relationship with the only person a client trust with their look: The Stylist.

The Male Effect in Ethnic Hair Care

Hair care products are primarily purchased by women. Current statistics show that over 85 percent of all health and beauty purchases are by females.

Most hair care advertisements and promotions are generally female centered as each company seeks to capture their share of the majority of the consumer dollar. I know that my company is no exception. We have led focus groups and studies on the purchasing habits of males and females within the ethnic category and there is no mistaking that your target market and primary consumer is female based. As a man with an impressive head of hair myself and as a hair care manufacturer, I have recently decided to take a look at the true ins and outs of the male dollar as in relates to the ethnic hair category.

I took a trip out in the market with a few merchandisers recently.

I always find that you can never beat the power of hands-on observation in conjunction with the analysis, research and spreadsheets that come across my desk everyday from research and development. I found myself engaged in an interesting conversation with two young ethnic males who we found purchasing hair care products in their local neighborhood chain store. Both men had just gotten off from work and had on three piece suits. One sported the classic close cut with a slight wave and the other had the new modified, not-so-perfect, afro coif. Now times in the work place have changed for the better as society has embraced the natural state of ethnic hair, but whether or not you are hitting the gym or the boardroom there are major concerns for males when it comes to hair grooming. They clearly saw that we were from the industry and working with a particular product. The “coif ” jokingly asked if he could get a discount but he quickly added that he knew exactly what he was going to buy before he got to the store. I asked why he chose the product he had in his hand. He said he has used the same product for the last 10 years, even when he changed his hair style. He motioned down the aisle and said “Man none of this stuff is for us. This is a whole aisle of pinks, purples and sweet smelling stuff. I can’t use any of that.” I found this statement interesting as it is only in the past two years that the natural hair care trend has truly been embraced and most shelf space in chain accounts have only expanded over the last eight months to meet the new demand of ethnic hair care, yet most men have the same limited selection that they have always had. Is the statistics related to the fact that men do not purchase hair care products as much as women or does the limited product offering help to dictate the trend?

I can think of quite a few male centered product lines that have sparked and then quickly fizzled over the last decade or so. I have a few product fossils in my manufacturing graveyard myself. Men do not sit

around and talk about grooming and we do not obsess with appearance as much as women, but it is reported over 80 percent of men do use product.

So what products do we use and why? According to a recent consumer report on health and beauty, the current industry leaders say that there are a few ways to stay profitable when capturing the dollars of ethnic male consumers. One safe bet when producing products for men must include shampoo and end with tools. Every man whether he admits it or not uses shampoo and carefully selects his shampoo. Dandruff, buildup, dryness and conditioning are not exclusive to female body chemistry. They may think about it more than we do but men need to address these problems too. In the ethnic category pomades and styling products are essential to a good hair care regiment. When you think of any ethnic style from twists and locs to waves and even the bald head, something is needed for moisture styling or appearance of some sort. These products would make for a good addition to the product mix for chains. For OTCs the trend seems to lead to a more tool-based approach. Every man owns a good pair of clippers. Even if he has locs as long as I do or visits his barber once a week. Even if it only sees the light of day twice a year, it has got to be in the cabinet. Professional barbers frequent beauty supplies more often than the average man. Clippers, blades and wave caps top off the bulk of male sales within the OTC. This is one of the only reasons males would want to enter a place labeled beauty supply.

Men also tend to stick to what works for them. If they find a product that they like they will use it for the next 10 years. Hair loss is also listed among the top five concerns for men in ethnic hair care. This is not as high as the overall statistics but this can be a plus with product lines like Groganics DHT Blocker System for hair loss and thinning. These products are designed and marketed as unisex products for sale within the OTC class of trade. This can often be a good up sell to the consumer that comes in seeking tools. He can offer a new service to his clients and the OTC will pick up repeat customers for that brand.

I have always appreciated well maintained beauty from natural to chemical, but as a man that has made his fortune on nurturing the niche product until it is fruitful and finding major profit no matter what the odds, I can certainly vouch for reasonable investment in the minority, no matter what the statistics. I can see the male ethnic hair care arena producing one of the next big waves in health and beauty.

OTC Beauty Magazine (OTC): What inspired you to develop a skincare line specifically designed for women of color?

Ezra Aini (EA): The clientele of the beauty supply stores that we managed for over 20 years in Brooklyn were mostly women of color, and thus it gave us an opportunity to hear what they “really” wanted or needed in their daily beauty regimen. At the time, the request was for a safe, yet effective, lightening solution without the harmful side effects of hydroquinone. When we heard that several times from different clientele, we became motivated to do something for them and all women of color, and it was out of that inspiration Makari was born. Today, Makari products are distributed in more than 45 countries around the world.

Place our retail product display and testers, along with samples and brochures in an uncomplicated, easy-to-find place in an attractive manner. Make sure each customer that passes the skin care section takes one of each sample and brochure.

EA: About a year ago Jinny Corp. opened its division Jinny Beauty International Export, directly across our headquarters in New York on the corner of Broadway and 28th Street. About a couple of months ago I reached out to James William who led me to Eddie Jhin for the potential distribution of our Makari line. At our initial meeting, I was very impressed with Eddie and his company’s nationwide and Caribbean distribution network. Jinny was also impressed with our skin care line and international presence. Ever since our first meeting we’ve been good friends.

Eddie is ambitious, intelligent, fearless and always looking to grow his family’s company to new, improved and unchartered territories. We share a lot of the same qualities and characteristics. So before you know it, we clicked and became good friends in and out of the board rooms.

라사장이 스토어를 경영한 시간은 비록 2년이라는 짧은 기간 밖에 되지 않았지만, 라사장은 무엇을 해야 하고, 어떻게 나 아가야 할 지에 대한 방향을 확실히 잡고 이를 실천해 나가고 있었다. 라사장과 같은 2세들이 성공을 이뤄가는 대에는 비 단 언어적인 요인 만은 아닐 것이다. 한국인의 성실함과 미국 인들의 사고방식을 잘 이해하는 것이 접목되어 남다른 경영 마인드가 형성되었기 때문이 아닌가 라는 생각을 해본다.

2013 Retail Beauty/OTC Stores Program

Following the success of the Retail Beauty/OTC Stores Program over the past four years, Cosmoprof North America (CPNA) has announced it will continue this well-received initiative in 2013. This program provides a unique opportunity for independent retail beauty/OTC store owners to meet with distributors and manufacturers, as well as gain access to show specials and insight into the latest trends in the beauty industry.

As a result of feedback from the beauty community, including Professional Beauty Association (PBA) members and CPNA visitors, a special emphasis has been placed once again on retail beauty/OTC professionals and key decision makers to maintain this supportive program.

Due to major shifts in distribution channels, the retail beauty/ OTC market represents growth opportunities for many new companies ready to do business in the US marketplace. However, since many retail beauty/OTCs are relatively small operations with limited budgets, this program aims to address the issue of limited costs of show participation.

It is a means to help partially offset the travel costs and expand the presence of the retail beauty/OTC demographic at the show.

owners to incorporate into their current business model and stores.

In Memory of John Jones John Paul Jones, Jr., 61, of Bethlehem Twp., PA passed away Friday, March 15. Jones worked as a sales manager for various companies, but retired from Mana Products in New York. He was an avid baseball fan and was very active with Freemansburg Little Leage and also the Connie Mack League.

Additionally, he enjoyed fishing and watching the Phillies and Cardinals.

Jones was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church and the Heights AA. We would like to wish his family all the best.

In Memory of Nasser Rahnama Born in 1937, Nasser Rahnama recently passed away. Simply known as “Nasser” and as a very humble man, he truly had a passion for the professional beauty industry. Rahnama graduated from American University before he started his career in the beauty business. He first worked with Morris Jacobson as a salon sales representative for Potomac Beauty Supply in Maryland before moving to work as a partner with Albert Auslander at Universal Beauty Supply. He later worked in salon sales with Steve Katz and Ken Gilman at Davidson’s Beauty Supply. He was instrumental in the launch of Zegarelli Haircare with Arnold Zegarelli. He then worked at Bio-Ionic for many years. Most recently, he worked in sales at Salon Elements. Nasser always saw the best in people and he wanted everyone to succeed.
