ou can straighten it, curl it, braid it, crimp it, buzz it, color it, gel it—honestly you can do just about anything you want to your hair. Perhaps that is what makes it so mesmerizing. Having the freedom to craft one’s own style, your customers have the ability to show the world their personality each day through their hairstyle. We here at OTC Beauty Magazine encourage all to embrace that gift and style away!

Whether your customers flaunt their natural hair, maintain it to a certain style or change it up with commercial hair, they should all be able to find the unique products they need in your beauty supply store. It is important to organize your shelves so that they can easily find the exact products they shop for. Learn how to do so effectively on page 22.

Speaking from a shopper’s perspective, it can be overwhelming to walk in a store and choose a simple product, such as shampoo. As I begin scanning the shelves I am bombarded with an array of brands and types of product, all promising to provide a certain style of beautiful hair. Brand loyalty often plays a role, but I still look at all my options before making a final decision. Having them located together enables me to make my selection with ease.

This month we have once again included a few articles with men in mind, ensuring to include them in the beauty mix.

Learn about men and the hair care business on page 42 and explore the world of clippers on page 34.

Additionally, parents may be getting a head start on back-to-school shopping. This month is the perfect time to begin planning your sales specials and deals that you would like to run during this season; it is never too early to plan ahead for success.

After all, children may want to return to school with a completely new hairstyle and you can help make that happen.

ith lace wigs and lace fronts being relatively new to many consumers, there are a lot of myths and rumors floating around. Many women who want to purchase a quality lace wig or even a celebrity lace wig are hesitant to the idea.

These most common lace wig and lace front myths are about to be busted.

A lace wig is completely carefree.

While lace wigs are made from quality remi human hair, care is still needed. Just as you would not leave your own hair unprotected, you should not mistreat your wig. Human hair lace wigs can get wet, use heat styling, be cut and colored. This does not mean it can suffer heat damage, constant chlorine usage without washing, or constant dying.

Treat a human hair lace wig as your own.

Outside of the lace wig itself, your own hair still requires care.

Many people believe they can leave the lace front or lace wig installed for six to eight weeks. While glue and tape applications such as Invisi Bond or Vapon NoTape provide a lasting hold, your natural hair must breathe. Regular washing and conditioning should still be a part of your regimen.

Only celebrities wear lace wigs and lace front wigs.

While this was true many years ago, lace wigs and lace wig products are widely available for all women. There was once a time when only industry professionals and celebrities were privy to lace front wigs, lace wigs, and custom lace wigs. Today, these products are available for everyone in many different beauty stores. The beauty behind a lace wig is that many times, you will not be able to tell who is wearing one or not.

To serve a broader market, lace wig makers create styles that women see on a daily basis. Celebrity lace wigs are more popular than ever. Style names such as Rihanna, Beyoncé or Kimora are available on many websites. Even if you do not have a favorite celebrity, you can usually find an exact celebrity style from a specific event. Lace wigs such as “curly Beyoncé” or “curly Halle Berry” are examples of the curly styles that you can get modeled after these celebrities.

Wearing a lace wig will make you go bald.

This is perhaps the biggest myth that is the least true. While other myths have a grain of truth, wearing a lace wig in itself will not cause baldness. In fact, lace wigs and lace front wigs can aid in hair growth.

Many women who choose to grow out their natural hair without chemicals use protective styles for healthy hair growth. Protective styles include braids, loose buns to protect ends, weaves and wigs.

What can cause hair breakage while wearing a lace wig is applying tape or glue directly on the hairline. Some women go as far as shaving the hairline so that the lace wig can sit back far enough to look more natural. What they do not realize is that lace bonding glue should never be applied directly to your own hair. This will end up in the wearer losing their hair edges over time from tension caused by the glue. If properly worn, a lace wig is a great way to protect your natural hair from harsh weather conditions and constant manipulation.

Anyone can apply a lace wig.

Lace wigs have become more innovative so that application is easier than ever. There are even synthetic hair lace front wigs with combs for quick and secure attachment. Even though there are sites and videos to instruct on lace wig application, it is best to go to a professional stylist to install the unit. It is even more important to go to a stylist who knows what they are doing.

Since lace wigs are fairly new to the broader consumer market, stylists have not had the opportunity to practice these techniques.

It is best to get a consultation about the lace wig itself and have a separate discussion concerning the application. Your stylists should be well versed in sheering hair to lessen the bulk of full hair, be able to measure your head for custom lace wigs, and advise you about the multiple application methods. If your stylist is as clueless as you or advocates in you leaving the wig on for a full six to eight weeks, run!

Over the years, being a licensed cosmetologist and instructor, I have witnessed a lot as it pertains to clients and their hair care. When they visit the salon or beauty school for service, they generally don’t shampoo before the visit.

When clients are taken to the shampoo bowl to be prepared for the service, the hair is rinsed first. After a thorough rinsing, the hair is shampooed because the rinsing alone did not remove the styling products applied earlier. When shampoo is applied there is no lather. There is no lather because the water from the rinse did not remove the styling products. Therefore the shampoo is mixed with the styling product and lather is not produced. Another shampoo is required to better cleanse the hair.

In some situations clients will only allow one shampoo. If so, the hair is not clean and residue remover is the perfect product solution to

this problem. It is a product to be used before the shampoo. It releases the hair of all environmental elements accumulated from dust and wind.

It eliminates the hair shaft of holding spray, gel, spritz, mousse, glaze, and other styling products left on the hair before the shampoo.

The residue remover prepares the hair and scalp to receive the shampoo and conditioner. It is a natural corn-based cleanser that allows micro-circulation to occur and provides the synergy necessary to assure a thorough cleansing of the hair and scalp. The residue remover prepares the hair to receive chemical services such as hair color, chemical relaxers, and permanent waves. For example: A client enters a salon requesting a permanent color. Arriving from work, she has styling products on her hair, yet she can’t shampoo her hair or manipulate her scalp through brushing or scratching prior to the service. Nonetheless, the hair color is not going to process 100 percent through the styling products.

Therefore, her hair color is not going to be the desired color because it has to work through the styling product before it gets to the hair shaft.

The residue remover can be applied to the hair shaft before a chemical service. Saturate the hair with the spray product, pull gently through to the hair ends, and rinse. Allow the client to sit under a lukewarm dryer and once it has dried completely, proceed with the chemical service. The product has a natural-based formula, containing ingredients such as Yarrow Extract (an anti-inflammatory, soothing, mild astringent, mostly found in Asia, Europe, and North America) and Jua Extract (a Brazilian fruit found in the formula and it serves as an antiinflammatory and stimulates circulation).

Sage Extract is also found in the residue remover and it acts as an anti-microbiologic agent and stimulant astringent. It helps to heal wounds, eczema, and sores, and acts effectively against hair loss. Sage and rosemary are grown in the Mediterranean areas. ave you noticed the price point of some clippers and trimmers increasing? There is a great deal of new technology going into the manufacturing and production of clippers and trimmers focused on the barbering industry. Recently, I had an opportunity to test several pair of clippers for power, blade technology, weight, maintenance and propensity to manage blade temperature during use. I tested one such clipper over a year ago at the Premiere Show and there were a few other clippers which stood out. The first clipper I tested is called the FX699 Volare X1, developed in collaboration with Ferrari engineers for Babyliss Pro Forfex under the Conair brand with a price range of up to $259. These clippers are designed with a new blade cutting technology which made a splash in the industry, but at a price point that seemed expensive at the time. The question which I have been asked a hundred times or so by barbers and stylist is if they are worth the money and my answer, then and now, is yes. They are amazing for cutting straight hair in one pass and they run extremely cool. Since they are cordless they will operate for about 70-80 minutes before needing to be recharged, but overall a great tool to have in your collection.

Next we have the Wahl release of a pair of clippers called the Sterling Stinger with a price point near $300. These clippers offer greater control of the power produced by the motor and increases the movement of the blade by turning a power control knob placed at the top of the clipper housing. The contour of the clipper fits well in your hand and the power control was phenomenal. Although it produced more power than you would need in the cutting process on an average day, it was good to know the power was there if you needed to crank it up for clients with a thick or course grade of hair.

The newest clipper is the once small animal clipper from Heiniger previously called Saphir now turned hybrid for human hair and re-designed by Oster. Now called the Octane, it is running at a staggering $400 out of the gate. I was one of the few privileged to test these clippers and wow, can you say “OUTSTANDING!” These cordless clippers pack power and they are built to run cool while providing an endless supply of running time due to the lithium-ion dual battery recharging system which is built to keep you cutting all day. The housing of the clipper is graphite gray with a simple on/off switch built on the side panel. I enjoyed the way they fit into my hand and they have a great weight balance to allow easy cutting and hours of use in the hands of skilled barbers. They utilize the well known A5 type blades or the current Oster blade system.

It comes with two blades and most of the Oster 76 Classic users will find this to be a must-have in their clipper collection.

Last but not least we have the Andis 90th Year Anniversary Master Edition. The classic clipper becomes classic again! I purchased a few pair of these clippers simply because they are one of the most durable clippers, if not the best clipper ever manufactured, and above all they have the coolest candy red housing. I purchased a pair to use and a pair to tuck away for historical purposes. If you do not have a pair of these clippers they are selling so fast and well that you may be out of luck if you do not make your purchase now. At a price of about $129 you can’t lose when purchasing these clippers because we all know the capabilities of the Andis Master. Each clipper has a unique serial number engraved on the cover plate. Only 9,000 of these clippers will ever be made. Get one for everyday cutting or to put on display as a collectible. This is a rare opportunity to own a limited edition tool that is literally part of professional barber history. My only observation of this limited edition clipper is I wish they would have sold them with a pair of white gloves because I hate to allow someone to hold my clippers and return them with finger prints all over the paint. air is big business. Not only does this industry appeal to women, but men are also targeted by hair goods manufacturers. According to results from a study supplied by the University of Oregon, these companies have good reason for focusing on men.

Reportedly, younger African-American men between the ages of 18 and 34 are more likely to be dedicated to a certain line of products that they use on a regular basis. These customers are also the most likely to branch out and try something new. This can be used to your advantage as it proves that there is hope for new, emerging products. This curiosity could fuel success of the next big type of pomade, for instance.

On that same token, keep in mind that shampoo and conditioner are the most widely used hair care products by African-American men. Far surpassing the amount of lotions, oils, gels, etc., general cleansing products are where the sales volume is. Although they may not use the products frequently, men are actively purchasing shampoos and conditioners. For this reason you should be sure to stock your shelves with a variety of these items to keep the customers happy. Varity is the spice of life after all; they just may be in the mood to try something new.

Do not be discouraged regarding your styling aid products.

Pomades, moisturizers and similar products still have the potential to grow in sales and popularity to potentially reach the use level as shampoos and conditioners. Especially among the younger age groups, customers may expand their hair care routine. Education is also a valuable tool to make available to customers as they may not know the benefits of many products either.

Some other factors that may influence men to try new products is a new hairstyle. Keep in mind that often times new products are required to create certain looks and this can be to your advantage, especially as the new school year approaches.

Women are also a factor in men’s purchasing decisions. If a woman tells a man she likes a certain way his hair looks, he will more than 42

That is how you can take advantage of the entire big business of hair—catering to both women and men.

ost marketers and retailers know that demographics and population numbers are important. Beyond that they need to know what makes a customer tick. The black woman is a unique customer and the more you

know about her, the better you will be able to influence her purchasing decisions. When it comes to beauty, they are

generally willing to spend more. According to Roper Reports, a research group, they like to look good regardless of cost (47 percent as opposed to 31 percent in the general market.) They deem it important to look their best at all times (83 percent as opposed to 73 percent in the general market).

I have had the privilege of interviewing some of the most beautiful and accomplished black women in the country

in my column, “Role Model; Beyond Beauty” which is published in Sophisticate’s Black Hair Styles and Beauty Care Guide.

These women are beautiful on the outside as well as on the inside. Accomplished in their homes and communities, they are distinguished by their personal commitments to give back to the world.

While Sybil Morial was raising a family of five in New Orleans, she was also the spouse of the city’s first black mayor—

Ernest “Dutch” Morial. She taught at the elementary and college levels, topping off her career as a vice president at Xavier University, one of New Orleans Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

After Susan L. Taylor stepped down from her storied career as editor in chief of Essence magazine, she developed a nonprofit

mentoring organization, the National Cares Mentoring Movement to encourage already existing organizations in the black community to mentor young black students. Women in the arts, like actress Victoria Rowell and singer songwriter Jennifer Holliday, have demonstrated their unique concerns. Victoria, a beneficiary of adoption and foster care, has championed those causes. Jennifer, whose career trajectory bypassed college, now supports other young men and women in Atlanta with a textbook fund.

Sometimes good things come in pairs—like the Harvey twins who established self-esteem programs for young women. In Knoxville, Tenn. it is the “Kitchen Sisters,” twins Helen Ashe and Ellen Turner, who are feeding the poor and homeless in a non-profit kitchen. Melanie Campbell is a leader in getting out the black vote and Crystal Wright is a career coach. My next column will cover more of these thought leaders and trend setters. They are the black women you should know more about.

Many of the promotions are set by the mass retailers and done on their own. They may get some advertising money or break price reduction money, but they are not actually getting the incremental dollar to reduce the prices to the extent that they are reducing them.

They internally reduce the prices for the products, which then leads to bringing the customers to the food, drug, and mass circuit.

There are many consumers who may not go into a beauty supply store for products, but may go to a retailer or mass merchandiser for prescriptions, groceries, etc., walk the aisles and see some of the beauty products they need, and buy them there. However, they will not usually see the larger sizes or professional products that they need and can only find in a beauty supply store. In most cases the retail store or mass merchandiser will have a small selection of beauty products.

Q: What should the OTC stores do to earn the same kind of deals as the major retailers?

A: They should request from the manufacturers and have open

doors for communication. You also have to include the wholesalers in the OTC community because all the businesses are going through the wholesalers. There is no direct contact with the OTC’s.

One idea would be for the manufacturers to have parallel promotions. In other words, if they are giving low prices, then the manufacturers should make something available as a free item or combo packet, only available in the OTC channels. Then, the OTC segment has to promote those products successfully; otherwise the manufacturers will be reluctant to continue to supply them.

Q: The OTC store owners should have comprehensive

knowledge about products. Where can they get the education for this? What would be the best way to learn?

A: The best way to learn is to have education at the store level. One

example that is good is an OTC store personnel used laminated card that lists descriptions of items (how often they use the items, what the unique features are, and how they interact with other products).

The card also indicates what the benefits are, what the consumers can expect to see from it, and how the merchandise is displayed. The same information is given on the reverse side in Korean so they can pass it along inside the stores and the clerks can understand what they are selling. That is one beneficial type of education; other types would be educational seminars held at trade shows, videos, product brochures in both English and Korean, etc. The OTC stores can also benefit from having a “home” for new items and other designated sections that rotate the items such as a “consumer value section” and “close out section.” Permanent signage for these sections is essential.

ccording to the National Crime Index, retail theft has risen by 30 percent over the last three years. Reports show that

this is large in part due to the state of the economy and higher unemployment. Many large retail chains claim that they have increased security measures as a result in shortages and loss. The story is no different among the OTC class of trade. Over the past year there has been brazen theft of synthetic and human hair from beauty supply stores across the nation. As recently as April of this year, we have heard stories across the nation from a stolen car plowing into the front of an Atlanta beauty supply store, to assailants in San Francisco brandishing scissors to remove hair from a mannequin in broad daylight. All retailers must factor shortage by theft and other causes as the cost of doing business. No matter if it’s a corporate chain or a small private-owned store, no one can afford to have inventory leave their stores without a purchase attached. There are several ways that store owners can stay abreast and alert when it comes to their money making inventory.

There used to be some advantages to a smaller store front

as there was fewer inventory and a smaller area to cover. One or two extra clerks, posted at key positions could often deter a would-be thief from the usual smash and grab, but as people become bolder these advantages may not always work. Large retail chains must invest a great deal of time and money in loss prevention. They often have a lot of stock to track and some cases acres of ground to monitor daily. This adds on extra expenses that can just add to the problem with a smaller business of any kind. The experts say that there are small steps that can be taken not to be the next retailer that gets “taken.”

A national retail security survey reports that the top

contributors to shortage are employee theft, shoplifting and inventory error. Retailers should consider close circuit TV cameras if their establishment is in a high crime area.

“With the age of web cams, almost everyone can afford

some form of CCTV in their business,” says Gregory Yoon a former Detroit detective and owner of Second Site Security Systems. “If not cameras, you can always use a system of mirrors that give clerks a 360 degree view of the store.” Yoon says that cameras should be noticeable and bold in open areas.

“The first line of attack is to make sure your business is not an easy mark. Let them know that you expect something might happen.”

If a retailer is robbed and the thief is caught on tape, they will be prosecuted, but you may not recoup that lost inventory or potential sale. So there is a chance that it could all be in vain once the theft occurs. Smaller retail stores should also consider the positions of displays and sales racks. Small details can make a difference. If items are displayed on hangers by a door, change the direction of each hanger to tangle any attempts to snatch products. Yoon also suggests that carefully considering the layout of your store can also create a deterrent. People will think twice if they anticipate a difficult time during the escape.

Inventory is a vital part of any

business. Even if the product retail mix is small, it pays to install a proper inventory tracking system. Statistics show that shortage can often be attributed to administration errors. A working database also allows you to keep up with items that go missing without a standard robbery attached. Popular items can often have a habit of walking out of the door. They may go unnoticed for long periods of time. The third highest report of retail shortage is caused by internal issues. Smaller retailers typically employ lower numbers of staff, but reports show that this is often a vital line of defense for small stores. Clerks are often the first direct contact on the sales floor.

They are the eyes and ears of retail. It pays to employ trustworthy people who not only want to make money, but understand the link between their advancement and the success of a company. Retail employees who are educated to the true harm of shortage in any form tend to take it more seriously as they realize that they can be affected by shortages also.

Yoon says that one of the final tips comes from good old

customer service. “Smaller retails are often found in the middle

We have progressed from the Jheri Curl to the Natural Curl. The industry once consisted of a small number of largely Black-owned manufacturers and a large contingent of independent beauty supply stores and salons. Distributors and wholesalers played a key role in the national and worldwide distribution of “ethnic products” in the 60s, 70s and early 90s. Many are no longer in business. The question one has to inject: What happened?

In the early 70s and 80s, there was a number of thriving

beauty supply stores in the country. It was estimated to be approximately 2,500 – 3,000 and more stores. Many survived and enjoyed the wave of chemical relaxers, blow-out kits and fashion cosmetics distributed through beauty supply and drug store channels. Today, it is estimated to be more 7,000 – 8,000 beauty supply stores. These stores are serviced by a small number of wholesalers. However, a number of those beauty supply stores are either out of business or on their way to bankruptcy. What happened?

It has been said, that curiosity “killed the cat,” however

it did not kill me. It merely motivated me to seek answers to the question of what happened. I have worked in this industry more than 30 years, seen trends come and go and return again, and I have represented major cosmetic companies to currently representing members of the “new naturals” group. This journey permitted me to gain tremendous knowledge and an acute understanding of the consumer it serves. I befriended industry giants along the 64

“불필요한 호기심이 고양이를 죽인다”라는 속담이 있지만, 이에 대한 호기심은 날 죽이지 못했다. 오히려 나로 하여금 무슨 일이 벌어진건지에 대한 답을 찾게 만든 동기가 되어주었다. 나는 이 업계에 30년 이상을 몸담아 왔고, 유행이 오고, 가고, 또 돌아오는 것을 지켜봤으며, 유명 화장품 회사들이 요즘 유행하는 “ 신 자연주의” 움직임의 주축들이 되는데에 일조했다. 이 삶의 여정은 나로 하여금 화장품 업계의 소비자들에 대한 거대한 지식과 예리한 이해를 갖게 해주었다. 또한, 그러면서 나는 이 산업계의 거장들과 친구도 되었다. 이 거장들과의 모든 관계들은 나로 하여금 미용 산업에 대한 값어치를 따질 수 없을 만큼의 지식과 지혜를 제공했다.

me with invaluable knowledge and a priceless wisdom about this industry. This connection provided me the facts to answer the “what happened” question: the consumer is missing.

The “old school” approach to selling has been forgotten.

Do you remember the Black Expo? This was a consumer trade show in several key metro markets which gave the industry a bridge to connect with consumers. There were many others. There are a limited number of manufacturers who remember how brands were built. It is commonly known as “sweat equity.” The easy way has become the norm. Store owners must be assured about a return on investment. How do you expect them to move products out of their warehouse if you have failed to do your “street work?”

The industry must collectively commit to a system of

educating and persuading OTC retailers about the importance of price integrity. Some of them culturally believe that they must “deep discount” premium priced product to induce consumer purchases.

This is one of the key reasons why our industry experienced such a low growth rate in 2011. The only exception was the new natural products category.

My advice for new manufacturers is to study industry

history and connect with the consumer. We must implement the 80/20 rule in key metro markets across the U.S. Twenty percent of retailers move 80 percent of the purchase volume. I challenge you to focus on this simple concept.

So what happened? Answer: the industry left the station

without the consumer. The focus must be placed on the following objectives: - Quality Products - Advertising and Promotions - Servicing the three levels of distribution

Manufacturing and the Moment!

I have been in the hair care industry for nearly 30 years now and I have been a manufacturer of quality hair care products for just as long.

I am proud to say that I run a small privately owned firm that does a lion’s share of business nationally and abroad. This pride comes from the fact that I know how vital the small business sector is to the American economy.

We have been a witness at the OTC class of trade level that the billion dollar corporations can often have the brawn of capital, but not the bravado it often takes to capture the unique niche of the ethnic hair category. Just take a stroll down the ethnic hair care section of your local retail giant. They have made great strides in the areas of ethnic hair care but it is clear. The ethnic hair care consumer will not be flocking to these stores to throw packages of virgin remy or Robert’s Diamond Bond Protective Shield in with their fabric softener and dog food purchases anytime soon. The small businesses of the U.S. are in a good place particularly in the 30 billion dollar hair care industry. It is important for us to one; realize our contribution to the backbone of the U.S. economy and two; harness this contribution to maximize our profit potential.

A few weeks ago I had the distinct pleasure of meeting President Barack Obama at an event in Atlanta. I am not a man to be star struck, but more than the opportunity to meet the President of the United States, I was extremely elated to hear about the current administrations manufacturing initiatives. According to the U.S. Newswire,

our government has launched a multimillion dollar initiative to strengthen advanced manufacturing clusters across the nation. Why is this important to the hair care industry?

Small businesses are what drive the U.S. economy. What is the ethnic hair care industry but the Oregon Trail of health and beauty, a collage of settlers that started concepts, products and businesses from the dirt floor up and built a nation. My frontier was eventually called “mango nation.’’ In any case, the ethnic hair care sector contains pioneers, independent thinkers, innovators and above all, those that truly changed the face of hair care.

According to the secretary of labor, Hilda L. Solis, “The manufacturing industry is a vital source of middle class jobs.” Statistics show that manufacturing accounts for 70 percent of private sector. Manufacturers like myself employ U.S. workers. Small mom and pop stores employ local workers. They open stores in communities that need the economic boost. We make products and retail to meet the hair care needs of those that have been ignored and underserviced. A good example is the growth of natural hair care. The more employment flourishes the more consumers will visit the stores again and the life cycle of the economy comes full circle. As you all know, this is a subject that is near and dear to my heart. I have been manufacturing products for natural hair care before it was even a concept. The OTC class of trade was the first to embrace these concepts and make these products accessible. The manufacturer and

the OTC store have not only been a tag team and champion of ethnic natural hair care. We have grown the sector into the billion dollar establishment it is today. If that is not powerful, I do not know what else is.

I am truly happy to see natural hair care being embraced by chain accounts and major corporations. It does my heart good to know the community that I have made designed products and championed to have more accessibility to products and a wider variety of goods and services. Most important, I cannot help but think of how it all grew into the industry that thrives today for us all.

It is an industry that a private manufacturer of natural hair care products just outside of Atlanta helped to build. It is an industry that OTC stores across the nation forged. As a part of the driving force for the U.S. economy, the marriage of manufacturer and OTC should not stop here. Do not just stop at retailing the brands. Look into private labeling quality products that your loyal customers trust.

Continue to support not just products, but new innovative concepts of manufacturers within the private sector. If we keep the life blood relationship of manufacturer, distributor and OTC alive with new concepts, quality products, and services that only we can provide, we are helping to drive the economy and seize yet another opportunity to harness the next money making moments in hair care—together.

The History of

Johnson Products Company This article is a tribute to the oldest hair care product company in business today that is still AfricanAmerican owned and operated, although it went through some difficult changes to be that way. This is also a tribute to Mr. George Johnson who started it all. It is in his honor that this article is dedicated.

Here is some history that I personally experienced and have gathered through the years. I was an on-call consultant to Mr. Johnson and worked in the beauty supply business from the late 50s until now.

In the Beginning Brothers George and John Johnson got their start in the hair care product business when working for the S.B. Fuller Co. in Chicago in the early 1950s; the company specialized in selling household and hair care products door to door. Fuller was one of a very few black owned companies doing over a million dollars in sales nationwide. Fuller inspired many black men and women to become independent business entrepreneurs, including Joe Dudley of Dudley Products in North Carolina. With this training and personal ambition, George and his wife Joan started their own business with an initial loan investment of $500 from a reluctant finance company. This resulted in the birth of the Johnson Products Co. (JPC). His brother John joined the company a few years later as vice president of sales.

George Johnson started out at age 27 with a partner named Orville Nelson; he was a barber with a shop in the 6300 block of Cottage Grove Ave. in Chicago, Ill. He had a product called Wavo that was a strong sodium hydroxide relaxer for men. Johnson and Nelson became partners in that endeavor. They started producing the product in back of a beauty supply store called M & W Beauty Supply on East 63rd Street in Chicago. This was back in the mid 50s. Part of what caused Wavo to be a success was that many of Mr. Nelson’s clientele were well-known black celebrities of the day such as Cab Callaway, Nat King Cole, Duke Ellington and others. A promoter named Ben Waller who represented the celebrities saw to it that the Wavo Products were 70

promoted at every personal appearance they made.

With the success of Wavo, Mr. Johnson with his wife Joan went solo and moved the business to a much larger facility on South Green Street in the Englewood district on the South West side of Chicago. He changed the name of the product to Ultra Wave. This is when the Ultra Sheen line was born.

Later came Créme Satin Press; this product was one of the first pressing compounds that did not have a petroleum base, and therefore did not leave a greasy appearance resulting in the hair having a more natural look and lasting longer without the need for a heavy bees wax oil to maintain longevity. Créme Satin Press became a leading item for use by black professional hairdressers. The companion product Ultra Sheen Hairdressing was a light weight conditioner that worked well with relaxed hair; also the custom designed jars distinguish Ultra Sheen from other products. The custom jars are still being used today.

The Ultra Sheen line became the leading items for Johnson thanks to distribution through the Walgreens and F.W. Woolworth chain of stores and a few others. The Ultra Sheen line became one of the few black produced products to be featured in major retail chain stores. Prior to that the products were only featured in black owned drug, grocery and beauty supply stores.

The Ultra Sheen relaxer line goes back to the days on Green Street and was the main reason for the company’s

success because it was the first relaxer that was mild enough to be used on women. Ultra Wave was much stronger because men have shorter and stronger hair and it would take a stronger product to break it down. Women’s hair was much longer and weaker because they were pressing and curling their hair with hot pressing combs and curling irons that were heated on stoves instead of electric power that did not get as hot as the stove heated irons. This heat process weakened the hair. Therefore a relaxer product for women had to have an adjusted lower pH in order to work without damaging the hair, and it was available only to professionals in beauty supply stores.

Growing in Success With this success the company outgrew the location on Green Street and moved to a much larger and modern building on Lafayette Street on the South side of Chicago.

There it remained until they sold the company to a holding company named Ivax in 1993, due to private family concern. During that time prior to the Ivax acquisition, Johnson developed a no lye relaxer kit called Gentle Treatment for the consumer retail market. It became a best seller in its category until other companies copied its concept. Ivax later sold the company to the Carson Products Co. in Savannah, Ga., which was eventually acquired by L’Oreal. The Fair Trade Commission (FTC) required that L’Oreal divest some of the JPC brands because L’Oreal already owned SoftSheen’s Optimum Care and Dark and Lovely lines. The acquisition would have given L’Oreal an unfair monopoly in the relaxer category of the ethnic hair care business, so they divested the Gentle Treatment and Ultra Sheen brands and sold them to Wella Corp.

In 2003 Proctor & Gamble acquired Wella, and JPC was a part of the deal. The main focus of P&G was to obtain the Wella color line (the best selling color line in Europe).

P&G already owned Clairol—the top selling color line in the U.S.—from an earlier acquisition from Bristol Meyers. This increased their market share of hair color products by a large percentage.

This opened the door for the current owners to make a successful bid for the JPC division. JPC is now owned as of April 1, 2009 by the husband and wife team of Eric and Renee (Cottrell) Brown and two investors. Renee is the daughter of the Comer J. Cottrell, the former owner of Pro-Line Corporation that was sold to Alberto Culver, and now owned by Unilever (formerly called Lever Bros.) whose home base is in the UK. Renee and Eric gained their insight and know-how through their involvement with both Pro-Line Corp. and Pro-Line International. This was only the second time in ethnic hair care history that a firm that started out black owned, was sold to a majority firm and then reverted back to being black owned. The first time was Summit Labs.

During its hay day JPC operated other related ventures such as a chain of beauty schools in and around the Chicago area called Debbie’s Beauty Schools. Johnson was one of the first sponsors of the “Soul Train” TV show. George Johnson was one of the co-founders of the American Health and Beauty Aid Institute (AHBAI), an organization

that was formed to inform African-American consumers what products were produced by African-American manufacturers and the multiple charities they supported in the African-American community.

Other product lines of the past were Afro Sheen for the natural Afro style popular in the late 60s and 70s. This trend slowed down considerably with the introduction of the Afro Curly Perm in the late 70s.

The Black Tie men toiletries line was the first line developed by Johnson for the total general market, with first class packaging and advertising directed at all men, not just black men. The problem was that when the product hit the distributors and major retailers, they positioned the product in the ethnic hair care areas of the store instead of with the other similar products where it would have surely done well.

The reason for this was because when the distributors saw the corporate name and logo of Johnson on the packaging they assumed that it was only for black people. Not even black men shop for toiletries in the hair care section of stores.

The product failed in the market because of unintentional misguided judgment by those responsible for product placement in large chain stores due to racial identification of the manufacturer, and not on the merit of the product.

During the planning for this venture, I had suggested that the product should be given a different corporate name and brokered through a white reaping company so that it would have a better chance to get into the general total market, but Mr. Johnson was determined to prove that a black firm could cross over into the total market without hiding his racial identity.

This was a costly history lesson. The general market consumer will buy products regardless of who is the producer, but how can they if the distributors and retailers do not make the product available. It is disturbing to see that an unknown name with no racial identification would have a better chance to be marketed, than a well-known brand name that is black.

A few years after the Curly Afro Curl became popular Johnson came out with their version of the curl called Classy Curl. Because Johnson entered this market late after a huge success by other competitors the line was not well received. Also, the product had to be recalled due to incorrect instructions in the kit. I was called in to consult on the product, and discovered the error, but it was too late because the product was already in production and distribution. This was caused by the marketing department not communicating with the research and development department. As a result, Mr. Johnson dissolved the marketing department and managed it himself. Johnson had an opportunity to get into this market earlier because the person who originated and reinvented the curl product that worked best for Afro curl was Willy Morrow with California Curl, who offered the line to Johnson, but was turned down by his brother John (who was the vice president of sales).

This was because he thought that the Afro Curl was just a passing fad. However the curly perm lasted for another 10 years after that, and is still popular today.

Feature John, George’s son Eric lead as vice president of sales and Joan became the CEO when George stepped down. Eric took the firm into a different direction by private labeling hair care products for large chain stores such as Walgreens, Thrift’s (on the west coast) and several others that are now owned by Rite Aid and CVS. These products became store brands and helped to solve some of the financial problems that existed and showed a profit of over $3 million. Eric left the company to pursue other business ventures, and one year later the company was purchased by majority owned Ivax of Fla.

similar products, but by that time Johnson’s reputation was damaged and loss a large portion of market share to competitors. This was one of several racially motivated setbacks that lead to the eventual buyout.

A Bright Future Under the guidance and directions of Renee and Eric Brown the company is undergoing a resounding re-birth with the introductions of new products that relate to the current trends and demands of the Afro consumer and with the potential to cross over into the total market. Before the takeover by the current owners, JPC was existing on its past laurels, with little or no promotions or keeping up with latest trends and product innovations. Now the firm is proactively pursuing new endeavors in order to keep up with the present and future consumer expectations.

The history of the JPC is an American success story that had its share of adversities, but in the end turned out still viable. This is not the end, but a new beginning under a new generation of innovators with the vision, know-how and willingness to get the job done, and done right. This will carry on the legacy of the company’s namesake, Mr. George Johnson.

I was a consultant to the professional division for many years and this accounts for first-hand information that was obtained during that time. It was my discovery of unfair and untrue product claims for relaxers by a firm that put a large dent in Johnson’s market share, resulting in action by the FTC against the other firm. However, the FTC did single out JPC with an order to put warning information on the labels of all products containing lye (sodium and calcium hydroxides).

Other firms producing similar products were not required to issue such warnings. The FTC claims that they targeted JPC because they were the market leader. Two years later the FTC changed their policy to include all producers of

OTC Beauty Magazine (OTC): In your opinion, what is the most interesting aspect of the beauty industry?

Kathy Alaama (KA): Henkel has a centralized global approach to research and development, headquartered together with our Schwarzkopf Professional laboratories in Hamburg, Germany, where they are able to develop leading technologies and ingredients that can be cascaded across both high-end salon offers and more affordable retail offers, ensuring that throughout the consumer offer chain, fascinating uncompromised experience is achieved. Under the Smooth ‘N Shine banner we recently launched Keratin Power Semi-Permanent Hair Tamer Kits.

Available in both regular and super strength formulations, these innovative new products were created to provide an “alternative” to harmful relaxer kits. Our semipermanent kits have legal claims which indicate that our product is up to five times less damaging than relaxers.

OTC: Please provide us with a brief description of Schwarzkopf & Henkel’s history.

Do you know any interesting facts about the company that you would be willing to share? For example, the name of the company is unique; how did it come into existence?

KA: The company name reflects a rich and long history of our company.

Overall, the company is 130+ years old, founded in Germany by Fritz Henkel. The Schwarzkopf name comes from an acquisition the company made of Hans Peter Schwarzkopf ’s hair care business, which started 112 year ago with the very first dry shampoo powder. Today in the U.S., the Schwarzkopf & Henkel business is focused on two brands acquired from the purchase of a much younger U.S. based company.

Despite these very disparate “ages,” the coming together of all three businesses share a clear tradition of entrepreneurialism and innovation.

OTC: How is the Henkel structured? Briefly describe the divisions that make up the company.

KA: Henkel is a very large global corporation doing over $21.7 BUSD annually (with 5.9 percent organic growth) and comprised of a Personal Care, Laundry and Adhesives division. In the U.S., all three sectors are highly active, with locations across the country. Within Personal Care, we have both Professional and Retail affiliates in Hair Care, Body Care, Skin Care, and Oral Care, all with strong market positions throughout the world. In the US, the Personal Care and Laundry division is run from the location in Scottsdale, Ariz., while the Professional and Retail Hair divisions are located in Southern California.

OTC: What types of products does Schwarzkopf & Henkel offer and how can OTC stores benefit by carrying them?

OTC: How do you determine when it is the right time to develop and release a new product? Are there any indicators you look for?

KA: We run an extensive market research program that allows us to build ongoing, deep insights into our consumers’ wants and needs, and to detect through qualitative and quantitative evaluation when these dynamics are changing and building broad relevance.

OTC: How do you keep consumers and store owners educated on product releases, uses and general information?

KA: In the OTC class of trade specifically, we educate our broker network with one-on-one training. OTC: What trend have you seen grow the most recently in your sector of the beauty business and how has the company met consumer demand for it?

할 수 없다면 즐겨라’ 라는 말이 있다. 이 말에 공감하기란 결코 쉬운 일이 아니다. 하지 만, 말 뜻을 자세히 생각해보면 ‘자신의 생각을 바꾸면 답이 생긴다’ 라는 말과 일맥 상

통하다는 것을 알 수 있다. 사람은 주어진 환경에 적응을 잘 하는 동물이다. 적응을 한다는 것은 그 환경에 맞추어 간다는 의미이다. 삶을 살아가면서 난처하고, 괴로운 일을 겪게 되면 어려운 상 황을 벗어나기 위해 많은 고민들을 해야 하는 경우가 생긴다. 하지만, 그럴 때 너무 상황에만 집중 을 해서 생각을 한다면 해답을 찾기가 힘든 경우가 종종 있다. 오히려 그 상황을 초월하여, 한 발 짝 물러서서 생각을 하다 보면 의외로 쉬운 해결책을 찾는 경우가 있다. 비즈니스 경영에서도 마찬 가지이다. 너무 한가지 상황, 또는 사안에 몰두하여 신경을 쓰게 되면 일을 그르치거나, 해결책을 찾지 못해 상황을 더욱 악화 시키는 경우가 생기기도 한다. 그럴 때 일수록, 조급한 마음을 버리 고, 보다 넓은 시선으로, 조금 다른 측면에서 접근을 하면 생각보다 쉽게 해답을 찾거나, 그 상황 을 극복하게 된다. 쉬운 일은 아니지만, 되지 않을 일을 끝까지 잡고 있는 것 보단 더욱 성공 가능 성이 높지 않을까 생각해 본다. Georgia 주 Decatur 시에 위치한 Hollywood Beauty 의 오 세일, 오경애 사장 부부는 주어진 환경을 최대한 이용하여 나름대로의 성공을 만들어가고 있는 스 토어 오너이다. 어려운 상황이 닥칠 때마다 이를 초월하여 자신들만의 방식으로 문제를 해결해 나 가는 ‘대범’ 한 사람들이다. 그들과의 인터뷰를 통해, 조금은 다른 방식으로 생각의 전환을 할 수 있는 방법을 배워보도록 하자.

눈에 띄는 제품진열이 판매를 만들어내는 열 쇠 이다 83년도에 도미한 오사장 부부는 87년부터 디스카운트 스 토어를 운영하였다고 한다. “그때도 헤어 제품들을 취급 하기도 하였지만, 주로 잡화를 판매하는 스토어였습니다” 라는 오사장 부부는 그 뒤로도 쭉 본인들의 스토어를 경영 해 왔다. 96년도에 비즈니스 때문에 한국에 나가서도 10 여년 동안 백화점에서 쥬얼리 스토어를 운영 하였다고 한 다. “여러 종류의 스토어를 운영한 다양한 경험이 많은 도 움이 되고 있습니다” 라며 그간에 쌓은 다양한 경영 노하 우가 현재의 뷰티 서플라이 스토어를 운영하는데 많은 도 움이 되고 있다고 한다. 한국에서 비즈니스를 정리하고 미 국으로 다시 돌아와, 필라델피아에서 살다가 조지아에 내 려와 처음 시작한 스토어를 몇 개월 만에 포기하기도 하였 다. 하지만, 오사장 부부는 그 동안 뷰티 업계가 많이 변화 했다는 것을 통감하고, 과감히 스토어를 정리한 다음, 조 금 더 배워야겠다는 생각을 갖고 뷰티 서플라이 스토어에 서 일을 시작하였다고 한다. 그 스토어가 2009년에 인수하 여 현재까지 운영하고 있는 Hollywood Beauty 인 것이다.

Hollywood Beauty 는 쇼핑몰 안에 위치하고 있어, 다른 뷰 티 서플라이 스토어들과는 조금 다른 환경을 가지고 있다. 스토어 면적 3,500 sq ft 의 Hollywood Beauty 에 들어서 면, 화려한 색상의 디스플레이가 먼저 눈에 띈다. “항상 디 스플레이에 신경을 쓰고 있습니다. 자주 배치를 바꾸기도 하고, 제품을 취급할 때도 디스플레이 할 것을 고려해서 구 입하는 편입니다” 라는 오경애씨는, 심지어 같은 기능의 제품이라도 디스플레이가 용이하지 않으면, 조금 더 비싸 더라도 진열이 편리한 제품을 구입하여 판매한다고 한다. “아무리 제품이 많고, 좋은 제품이라고 해도, 고객들의 눈 을 사로잡지 못하면 판매를 이루어내기가 쉽지 않습니다” 라며, 그래서 스토어에 들어온 고객들이 쉽게 볼 수 있고, 만질 수 있도록 제품을 디스플레이 하는데 많은 노력을 기 울이고 있다고 한다.

이름만으로 스토어 이미지를 바꾼다? “대부분의 뷰티 서플라이 스토어들은 이름보다는 뷰티 서 플라이 스토어임을 강조하는 경향이 있는 것 같습니다. 하지만, 저희 스토어는 몰 안에 위치한 관계로 다양한 고 객들을 유치하기 위해 원래의 상호인 Hollywood 라는 이 름을 고수하였습니다”. 물론, 상호명으로 인해 스토어의 정체가 모호할 때도 있지만, 뷰티 서플라이 제품들에 국 한되지 않았다는 인상을 심어주는 장점도 있다고 한다.

이는 현 스토어가 쇼핑몰 안에 위치했다는 특성상, 다른 뷰티 서플라이 스토어들과는 차별이 되는 것이다. 현재 뷰티 서플라 이 스토어에서 다양한 잡화를 취급하고 있는 것이 일상화 됐다. 따라서 소비자들도 으레 다른 잡화들을 구입하기 위해서 뷰티 서플라이 스토어를 찾고 있게 현실이다. 그렇다면, 반드시 뷰티 서플라이 스토어라는 것을 강조할 것이 아니라, 뷰티에 관한 다 른 패션 제품도 취급하고 있다는 것을 이름으로 나마 표현하는 것도 한가지 마케팅 기술이 아닐까 생각해 본다.

생각을 달리하면 마음이 편해진다 Hollywood Beauty 는 다른 뷰티 서플라이 스토어들과 마찬가 지로, 주위에 동 업종 스토어들이 즐비해 있는 환경이다. 심지 어 대형 스토어들도 몇몇 위치해 있다. “처음에는 당황하고, 위 축되어 조급한 마음뿐 이었습니다. 하지만, 골리앗과 다윗의 싸 움 같다는 생각을 하고, 생각을 달리하기 시작하였습니다”. 그 래서 생각해낸 것이 ‘차별화’ 라고 한다. “가격으로는 경쟁을 할 수가 없다는 생각에, 조금 다른 제품들을 취급하기 시작하였 습니다. 그리고 쇼핑몰이라는 특성을 살려 조금은 고급스러운 제품도 취급하기 시작하였습니다” 라는 오경애씨는, 조급한 마 음을 버리고, 자신만의 길을 찾다 보니 마음이 편안해 졌다고 한다. 그러한 편안한 마음이 스토어 경영에도 영향을 미쳐, 그 들만의 경쟁력을 갖추게 만들어 주었다고 한다. 또한, “작은 스 토어에도 장점들은 얼마든지 있습니다. 큰 스토어 보다는 고객 들을 잘 케어해 줄 수 있다는 장점과, 스토어내의 고객들이 제 품을 쉽게 찾을 수 있다는 장점이 있습니다. 월마트가 가격이 싸기는 하지만, 간단한 물건을 구입할 때는 CVS를 들어가는 이 치와 같다고 볼 수 있습니다” 라며 고객들에게 좀더 간편하고 편리한 쇼핑환경을 만들어 주는 것이 그들의 경쟁력을 더욱 증 대시키는 일이라고 한다. 새로운 제품을 취급할 때 또한, 케미 컬은 조금 반응을 기다렸다 취급하는 편이지만, 잡화에서는 느 낌이 오는 제품들은 바로 구비를 한다고 한며, “잡지를 통해 새 로운 제품의 정보를 얻기도 하지만, 그 보다는 들어오는 손님들 을 항상 눈여겨보고 있습니다” 라고 한다. 스토어를 방문하는 고객들이 그들의 제품을 구입하는 사람들이기 때문에 그들의 성향을 파악하고 그들의 유행을 따라가는 것이라 한다. 그래야 그들의 입맛을 제대로 맞출 수 있다는 것이다. 그야말로 가장 기본적이면서도 크게 공감할 수 있는 부분이 아닌가 생각된다.

Therapy Trends Synthetic Snobbery Many consumers still prefer human hair wigs and weaves.

However, for those who opt to use synthetic hair products, perceptions of quality and price border on snobbery. Synthetic hair is a broad term used to describe strands of material that isn’t made of a natural hair.

Kanekalon, monofilament, polypropelene and toyokalon are specific types of synthetic hair. Consumers believe that lesser quality synthetic fibers are best used for braids and artificial locks. In your store, these fibers may represent the less expensive range of wigs and packaged hair. Recent innovations offer more human-like strands that can be styled with heat up to 400 degrees. There is a place in the marketplace for all fiber types. Even natural versus synthetic bird feathers have a pecking order.

There is a wig or weave for every customer— artificial hair is glamorous and popular. It is no longer a medical prophylactic to hide disease or condition.

Your customers will spend at various price points for it.

They will be very snobbish about natural looking quality whether it is synthetic or not. Consumers that seek to purchase their hairstyle will be more concerned about value and longevity. Human hair may be preferred since it can be considered more natural. However, high-quality synthetics may be as pricey as the human hair products currently available in the OTCs. The market is growing in size, variety and profitability. It will be crucial to follow commercial hair trends—including care products.

s we enter our 65th year in business, we want to take time to reflect back on how we got here.

What started off as a small show at the local YMCA on Butler Street has now grown into the largest show of its kind at the Georgia World Congress Center.

With a consistent presence throughout Georgia and the entire country for an impressive 65 years, Bronner Bros. is a company with a historical backbone and longevity at its core.

The company’s roots are deep, and many who were instrumental in planting the initial seeds are still here cultivating their growth. The company has known only two presidents, my father—Nathaniel H. Bronner, Sr. (19471993) and me—Bernard Bronner (1993 – present). We both significantly contributed to the development of the company; however, much of the success can be attributed to my father, founder, Nathaniel Bronner, Sr. Without his vision and commitment to the success of the company, Bronner Bros. as we know it wouldn’t exist today. Looking ahead at what the next 65 years could bring—persistent optimism and emphasis on faith and family—it paints, like a mural, a future that’s bright, yet wide open enough to embrace any scenario, harvesting unpredictable opportunities ahead and persistent in the face of challenges.

The best way to understand something is to recognize its history and founding roots. Our story began in 1947 when my 100

And now, as we celebrate 65 years, I am proud of the progress that we have made. Like my father taught me—you must put God first, family second, and job third to give you infinite wisdom to succeed.

he American Health and Beauty Aids Institute (AHBAI) recently held its 23rd Annual Proud Lady Beauty Show—Chicago, at the Tinley Park Convention Center in Tinley Park, Ill.

Thousands of beauty and barber professionals from across the country and abroad attended the show held May 5-7.

The 2012 Proud Lady Beauty Show, “The Nation’s Leading Educational Event in the Beauty Industry,” featured over 20 free classes, eight glamorous competitions, a new Hair and Fashion Extravaganza, and a comprehensive trade show featuring key beauty products and educational opportunities for professional hair stylists, barbers, nail technicians, and cosmetology and barber students.

Some of the prominent exhibitors included Andis, Avlon, Benison, Bronner Brothers, Design Essentials, Designer Touch, Dudley, Essations, Golden Supreme, Kizure, LaTextura, Mizani, Nairobi, Namaste, Summit Laboratories, and Wahl.

The Hair and Fashion Extravaganza featured awe inspiring creativity from Montgomery Martha of Marquin Salon, Chicago, Ill.; Kenyell Hall of Phase II Salon, Indianapolis, Ind.; and Kevin Carter of Artistry of Hair Salon, Detroit, Mich.

쪽면도 윗니 바깥면과 마찬가지로 이를 닦 고, 앞쪽은 칫솔을 세워서 이를 닦는다. 셋 째, 아랫니 바깥면과 아랫니 안쪽면도 윗니 와 마찬가지로 잇몸에서 이쪽으로 향하도 록 이를 닦는다. 넷째, 씹는 면은 앞뒤로 왕 복운동을 하면서 세밀하게 이를 닦는다. 다 섯째, 혀는 칫솔을 구역질이 나지 않을 정 도로 넣어서 앞뒤로 부드럽게 닦는다. 혀를 잘 닦지 않으면 입냄새의 원인이 되기도 하 고 세균이 많이 생기기 쉬운 곳이므로 잘 닦 아야 한다. 이와 같이 이의 모든 부분을 순 서를 정해서 부드럽고 깨끗하게 잘 닦으면, 충치도 생기지 않고 잇몸 병도 예방할 수 있 다. 하루에 3번, 밥을 먹고 3분이내, 3분이 상 이를 닦자는 3.3.3 구호를 잊지 말고 실 천하여 건강한 이를 간직해보자.

속했다. 보고서는 “잘사는 것과 마른 것이 연관이 있는 것이 아니다. 일본의 경우 체질 량지수와 체중이 모두 낮지만 생활수준도 높다. 아랍 국가 비만율이 높은 것은 자동 차 때문”이라며 “모든 국가의 체질량과 체 중이 미국처럼 된다고 가정하면 1인당 몸을 유지하기 위해 필요한 열량은 10.2% 증가 하게 될 것”이라고 분석했다.

On Friday, May 4, the Gold ‘N Hot 1” Professional Ceramic Conical Iron was featured on ABC TV’s “The View.” The beauty team did audience makeovers and celebrity hairdresser Bryant Renfroe used the iron to add texture to a modern and fresh looking bob.

As a part of their month-long “Guy-Day Friday” segment, “The View” gave audience

members the opportunity to receive a makeover with some of the top products in the industry.

“The View’s” hair crew transformed spectators to give them the latest trends that mix hot, young Hollywood with sirens of the silver screen.

Johnson Products Co. CEO, Eric Brown, Named Executive Chair

Johnson Products Co., Inc. (JPC) recently announced that its CEO, Eric Brown, will become Executive Chair as the company restructures and prepares itself for future growth. In his new role, Mr. Brown will be actively involved with JPC as well as focused on strategic initiatives and potential acquisitions.

“During my tenure as CEO of Johnson Products Co., I have been extremely proud of all that we have accomplished since acquiring the company in 2009,” stated Eric Brown. “As we prepare for the future, my new role as Executive Chair will now allow me to focus on important strategic initiatives that will make JPC stronger.”

In March 2009, Mr. Brown led the successful acquisition of Johnson Products Co. from Procter and Gamble with the combined investments of

RC Fontis, St. Cloud Capital and Plus Factor, LLC. At that time, the strategic direction for JPC was to strengthen the company’s signature brands, Ultra Sheen® and Gentle Treatment®, in the U.S. and around the world. Within the first 18 months after the acquisition, JPC saw 20 percent growth in revenues under Mr. Brown’s leadership.

Replacing Mr. Brown as CEO will be Gabrielle Greene. Ms. Greene has been a professional in the financial services industry for over 25 years. Ms. Greene received her B.A. from Princeton University and her M.B.A. from Harvard Business School and J.D. from Harvard Law School. She serves on several corporate boards including Whole Foods (NASDAQ: WFM) and Stage Stores (NYSE: SSI). Renee Cottrell-Brown will remain in her current role as Chief Marketing Officer.
