Reflection nother December has arrived which means another year is quickly coming to a close. Take a look around and consider everything that is fortunate about your circumstances. If you are reading this magazine, it most likely means that your store has made it through the year. So while you are still here, chances are that quite a few of your competitors did not make it to the end of 2010. Take this opportunity to learn not only from their mistakes but also from the ones you’ve made over the last year.

Perhaps you tried a new way of merchandising that didn’t quite work out, or maybe you instituted a new store policy that wasn’t very popular with your customers—don’t worry. Remember

that in spite of that, you’re still here! You should always remain reflective; open and willing to learn from both positive and negative occurrences in your personal and professional life. Use this time to think about what has worked well for you over the last 11 months and think about how you can make those same methods or policies work even better for you in 2011.

Have a printed return policy. Keep it near the cash register. Let customers know what kind of products can be returned and which ones can’t. Also, include in the return policy a suggestion to consumers that they consult a stylist before they purchase a non-returnable item that they are not sure about.

Request manufacturer help. Among services that manufacturers can provide retailers are: suggested planogram, sale rankings, product information for in-store personnel in English and Korean—preferably laminated, consumer samples, window signs, shelf talkers…all of which can be included in a numbered merchandising kit sent by distributors.

Also, manufacturers can have special sales for a retailer’s biggest customers. Implement a coupon program, premium product rewards program, print store names on the items, sidewalk sales, etc. Some manufacturers also offer merchandising help.

Differentiate yourself from mass retail stores.

Sell larger-sized products than the chain stores offer so that customers can pay less per ounce.

In prominent displays, feature the items that mass chain stores do not offer.

Wholesalers should be able to provide retailers with some key services. Wholesalers can provide consumer samples and sponsor seminars for OTC beauty stores. Retailers sometimes only find out about unavailable items after they receive a shipment. Wholesalers should always let retailers know as soon as possible if anything in an order is out of stock. They can inform the retailers about new products, trends, displays, which items are on the rise and which are on the downhill, etc. Wholesalers can be a good source of knowledge regarding what local brands are popular in your particular area. Of course retailers must give more loyalty to the most efficient and effective wholesalers by giving them more business and by paying their bills on time.

One rule of thumb for purchasing: only buy in amounts that you can sell within two months.

Things to consider when purchasing include, “Is this a new or established product? Does it have consumer value? Is it seasonal or trendy? What’s the selection? What are the key products?”

The NBSDA needs to do a better job of letting manufacturers and distributors know what they bring to the table. They should announce how many associations they have, what the membership is and that they are offering manufacturers the opportunity to do more business. Then they should exchange information with manufacturers and wholesalers to develop strategies to implement programs that can be effective.

They need to get manufacturers to provide product education and merchandising. The local associations need to discuss ways to become more involved in the community. They also need to talk about hiring local people.

Be sure to keep new products, consumer values, travel and trial, closeouts, children’s, haircolor and skin care, etc. separate. Put up signs that identify products. It can help to have an in-store salon.

Feeding Dreams Giving Back in the Season of Giving

I

t’s the season of giving as Christmas and Kwanzaa approach, but it’s not just individuals who are giving. Sometimes it’s companies who are giving back to their communities.

Ultimate Beauty Companies took part in the Komen Orange County Race for the Cure 5K Walk to raise funds for the City of Hope—a hospital dedicated to the health, wellness and cancer research programs—in Duarte, Calif. Procter & Gamble launched the Pantene Beautiful Lengths initiative to encourage women to grow their hair and cut it for organizations that make wigs for women who lose their hair through cancer treatments. Sometimes it’s food companies that give back. Campbell Soup Company launched the Address Your Heart Campaign to raise awareness about heart disease and to help women reduce risk. It promoted its low sodium soups and its line of Heart Healthy Request Soups, pledging nearly $2 million to the American Heart Association.

General Mills Food Corporation gave back to many communities in a unique way in its Feeding Dreams program (www.feedingdreams.com). Leaders in Alabama, South Carolina, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, Florida, Tennessee, Louisiana and Virginia

were spotted doing something good. Spokeswoman for the initiative and well-known author, Susan L. Taylor, editor-in-chief emeritus of Essence magazine, leads by example in her National Cares Mentoring Movement (www.caresmentoring.org). The program, in 56 cities across the U.S., recruits men and women for local organizations that are seeking mentors for black children.

In this season of joy and giving, I am pleased to share some good news about the ten Feeding Dreams community champions below. The champions are showcased in a custom publication, “Feeding Dreams: A Magazine to Celebrate the African-American Family and Community.” In an Internet voting contest, communities placed votes for their champion. This month General Mills announces the highest vote-getter at a grand finale and gospel salute at Martin Luther King’s church, the historic Ebenezer Baptist, in Atlanta. The winner’s charity receives a $10,000 contribution. Seven General Mills brands were highlighted. Honey Nut Cheerios, Yoplait yogurt, Nature Valley snack bars, Hamburger Helper, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Pillsbury Grands! biscuits and Betty Crocker brownie mixes were distributed along with the publication in beauty salons and churches.

Joyce Gilliam Brown is an international folklorist and motivational speaker from Norfolk, Va. She tells folk tales in schools, churches, hospitals, prisons, senior citizen facilities, private clubs, at class reunions and ethnic weddings. In Africa she visited schools, orphanages and churches.

The Nigerian National Theater gave her a standing ovation. Brown volunteers at Ready Academy Christian School in Norfolk, teaching 2nd and 3rd graders the art of storytelling. She is the cofounder of “Lottie and Mag,” a dramatic presentation depicting black church life in the 40s. She is a life member of the historic First Baptist Church, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and the Black Storytellers of America.

Donald O’Conner Memphis, Tenn.

Watoto De Afrika

Donald O’Conner is director of “Watoto De Afrika,” which is Swahili for “children of Africa.” A variety of Afrocentric performing arts and literary styles, including blues, jazz, gospel, Negro spiritual, contemporary Afrocentric movement, black poetic composition and expression are used to help children appreciate their cultural heritage as they sing and dance through history. More than 3,000 students have had their lives positively impacted. O’Conner has collaborated with such artists as Chaka Khan, Marvin Gaye and Earth, Wind and Fire.

His extensive travel, research and study of black music history and Afro musicology have been highlighted in the BBC documentary, “The Story of Gospel Music.”

Dr. Sandra Ford Birmingham, Ala.

Spirit of Luke Charitable Foundation: A Promise to Help

Dr. Sandra Ford co-founded the Spirit of Luke Charitable Foundation: A Promise to Help, to offer remedies for healthcare disparities in underprivileged and underinsured populations in Birmingham, Ala. Dr. Ford runs the Internal Medicine Affiliates whose motto is “We care for people, not just disease.” Once a month she leads a mobile hospital team staffed with volunteer doctors and nurses. Community members get free medical exams, blood work, medicine, clothing, food and prayer. The Promise to Help has assisted more than 26,000 with health care with the assistance from more than 3,500 volunteers. Churches in Birmingham partner with the program to meet spiritual needs.

Vanetta S. Keyes Atlanta, Ga. CHOICES

Vanetta Keyes established the Center Helping Obesity in Children End Successfully, Inc., (CHOICES). The Center for Disease Control estimates that more than 9 million children and adolescents in this country are overweight or obese, nearly four times the number 40 years ago. Keyes, a certified public accountant, decided to set up the nonprofit when she saw her own family being affected by a weight problem. Children are supported with resources including physical fitness training, diet and nutrition education, peer and family socialization, interactive Web programs, counseling and coaching.

Students from Kennesaw State University in Kennesaw, Ga. and dietetic students at Georgia State University in Atlanta volunteer to help students make better food and lifestyle choices.

Blessings in the Storm

Loretta Harris-Caldwell is the founder of Blessings in the Storm, a Christianbased outreach ministry that assists women and children who are dealing with homelessness and addiction. Although the organization does not receive federal, state or local funding, it does rely on a “ministry of helps” where Harris-Caldwell receives support from friends and volunteers. Blessings is a safe place where women can build new lives with their children. It offers programs that teach life management, parenting and independent living skills.

There are two transitional homes—Naomi’s House, where women can be reunited with their children while becoming self-sufficient and Ruth’s House for single women.

Dr. Stuart Hamilton Columbia, S. C.

Eau Claire Cooperative Health Center

Dr. Stuart Hamilton founded Eau Claire Cooperative Health Center, a non-profit medical facility, to combat health disparities in South Carolina. It is a federally qualified, community based comprehensive medical safety net that provides access to primary healthcare services for the traditionally underserved. He operates ten clinical sites in the midlands of South Carolina—Richland, Lexington, Newberry and Fairfield counties. The cooperative’s services include pediatrics, family medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, dentistry, pharmacy and family counseling. All services are available with a sliding fee scale based upon family size and income. Eau Claire has been one of the first health centers in the area to respond to the emerging health needs of the Hispanic and Latino community.

Lorenda Raquel Cheeks Jackson, Miss.

It’s Hip to Be Fit Girl Scouts of Greater Mississippi

Lorenda Cheeks is known as “Miss Girl Scout Lady” in Jackson, Miss. Through Girl Scouts of Greater Mississippi, Cheeks facilitates a program called “It’s Hip to Be Fit” where girls learn the importance of eating a variety of healthy foods such as fruits and vegetables, drinking water and milk, and engaging in physical activity. She has been instrumental in affording at-risk children the opportunity to engage in new experiences including archery, canoeing and forums about social etiquette. Cheeks encourages her troops to participate in outreach activities. Leading by example, the elementary school teacher and member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority is a volunteer for a youth bible study and a school arts program.

Pepper Peete Jacksonville, Fla.

The First Tee, Brentwood Golf Course

Pepper Peete, the executive director of The First Tee at Brentwood in Jacksonville, Fla. has assisted over 2,000 children with learning lasting life skills and core values through a program in which golf is used as a teaching tool. One student earned a $10,000 college scholarship—others qualified to play in the Walmart Open at Pebble Beach. The course has a crucial role in revitalizing the urban area, impacting not just the youth, but the whole community. College graduates come back to volunteer in Peete’s program. Despite cutbacks and slow contributions, Peete never lost site of the dream. The proof is in the opening of a new learning center.

Merline Barton Miami, Fla.

Thelma Gibson Health Initiative

For over 23 years Merline Barton worked in economic development and social services for the Coconut Grove Community of Miami.

She focused on job training and placement at the Coconut Grove Family & Youth Intervention Center. When she became aware of the desperate need for a health care agency in the community, she developed the Thelma Gibson Health Initiative. The agency provides services for at-risk minority seniors, a youth intervention programs for ages five to 18 and a third resource—an HIV/AIDS and substance abuse outreach program that focuses on education, testing and referrals. The agency provides family counseling, mentoring, tutoring and cultural enrichment activities.

Jerome Smith New Orleans, La.

Treme Community Center

Jerome Smith likes to share his wisdom with the young people of New Orleans. One of his favorite sayings is, “When you fall down, you get back up.” He is revered and respected as a mentor, teacher and nurturer of at-risk black youth in the Seventh Ward and Treme neighborhoods of New Orleans. He can often be seen at the Treme Community Center interacting with young people. His “balls and books” philosophy encourages all youth who want to play a sport to also carry their own library card. Smith’s goal is to help young people build confidence in themselves and to learn more about black history.

Bringing Professionalism Back into the Beauty Supply Business

Forgotten codes and disappearing service Prior to the late 1970s, a beauty supply store was just as its name implied—a place where professional cosmetologists and barbers could go to purchase products, supplies and the tools of their trade. Today, most such designated stores are a little more than neighborhood cosmetic shops.

A

lthough the beauty supply stores of today are bigger with a larger selection of products, two important factors that distinguish them from the stores of the past are service and the time honored code of “For Professional Use Only.” Many products that are available today display this statement on the label, but it is often ignored by both store management and customers. In the past, the majority of beauty store customers were licensed professionals. Today, less than 10 percent of the customer base is professional and the code “For Professional Use Only” is not adhered to. Among the many aspects that spark this concern are that when a product is labeled with this code, it should not—by law—be sold as a retail item to nonprofessionals or in retail stores designed for the general public such as drug, grocery, department or any other retail and discount outlets. If a nonprofessional buys a product labeled “For Professional Use Only” and they experience undesirable results, they have little chance of recourse from the manufacturer because the product was produced especially for use by trained professionals and was so noted on the label. Products with this notation enjoy certain licenses from the FDA in regards to content listings. Products that are designed for the nonprofessional retail consumer have to list their contents in the order that they appear in the product. For example, if the product has more water than anything else, then water will be the first item listed. If a customer is was attracted to a product because of a specific ingredient shown on the front label but the contents list that ingredient last or near the bottom, then that ingredient is not the dominant item in the product. The FDA requires that in order for a manufacturer to list an ingredient on the label, there must be at least a trace element of that ingredient in the product.

Many products that contain pharmaceutical ingredients such as vitamins, hormones, etc. will refer to the amount as international units or IUs. An international unit is one part of a million. For example, if a product claims to have 5,000 units of an ingredient, although it sounds like a lot, in reality it is only .5 percent of the total product. That may or may not be enough of the ingredient to serve your purpose.

Some products do not have a large amount of a key ingredient in order to do what you expect of it, such as hair relaxers. The key ingredient for relaxers is sodium hydroxide. However, sodium hydroxide is only between one and a half to two percent of the total product. To add any more than that could render the product dangerous or unstable to use on human hair.

Products labeled “For Professional Use Only” are required by the FDA to list their ingredients in alphabetical order. This is allowed by the FDA in order for the producers of professional products to protect their formulations. However, most manufacturers of professional products put enough of the beneficial ingredients in their products in order to perform in the manner advertised. This may result in the product costing

Business Tips more, but customers will get what they pay for. This helps cosmetologists to render satisfying professional results to their clientele. The problem here is this: when a cosmetologist uses a product on their client and the client can then buy the same product from the same source, this dilutes the professionalism of the cosmetologist in the minds of the client. The client then thinks that they can achieve the same results if they use the same products at home. What the client does not realize is that the product is only a small—albeit important—part of the successful results of the service. The major factor of good results lies in the skills and knowledge of the cosmetologist who attended manufacturer-sponsored classes, seminars and professional trade shows to acquire the necessary information, education and skills that cannot be obtained on the label, coupled with the training they received in beauty school.

Due to the fact that most beauty supply stores do not honor the code of “For Professional Use Only,” some manufacturers have chosen to make their products available only through direct sales and marketing. Some companies do not make their products available through beauty suppliers or distributors, but sell them directly to the professional using their own sales force network. This is the only way that they can assure themselves and their professional customers that the products will only be sold to and used by professionals in the correct way. This practice is also what helped give birth to the “Professional Only” stores.

Prior to the mid-1970s, a few manufacturers refused to allow supply stores that were caught selling professional products to the general public to purchase their products directly. It did not matter how much business volume the store did in the past or even if it was a part of a large chain operation. If they were caught dishonoring the code the store was cut off. Any distributors that were caught supplying the targeted store were also reprimanded. The manufacturers were alerted to this by the professional cosmetologists who were upset that their patrons could obtain professional products without identifying themselves as licensed professionals. Today, there are more than 20 times as many beauty supply stores than there were in the 70s due largely in part to Korean ownership and the expansion of major beauty supply chains. This makes it next to impossible for manufacturers to police and pinpoint any offenders.

Another factor that has all but disappeared from the professional scene is service. Prior to the mid-1970s, most beauty supply stores rendered door-todoor service. The cosmetologist or barber could call the supplier and have their order delivered without a service charge. Or, they could depend on a service representative to call on them on a regular weekly or biweekly basis. But today, there are beauty supply stores in every neighborhood and small towns in the country. Service is not for the most part a thing of the past. Or is it?

Herein lies a hidden opportunity for an aggressive and visionary beauty supplier to cash in on a mostly ignored void in this market place. First, honor the code “For Professional Use Only.” Offer personal service to the beauty and barber salons within a certain geographical area with a minimum order.

Advertise and live up to the code that you will not sell products labeled for use by professionals to nonprofessionals. Post a sign in your store proclaiming this rule. If you have the space, create a special section in the store for professional products and only allow professionals to shop there. When the word gets around that you respect and honor the professional code, in turn, professionals will reward you with their business and not their competitors. The most widely sought after professional products are the products that are sold through direct channels and unavailable to suppliers for the reasons alluded to earlier in their article. When the word gets out that there is a supplier who absolutely honors and enforces the professional code, perhaps that supplier will be allowed and entrusted to stock more prestigious lines by the manufacturers, affording that supplier a large advantage over the competition. That supplier should have a salesperson call on salons on a regular basis especially in small rural areas. Stock that employee’s car or truck with professional products and watch your business skyrocket.

How to distinguish yourself from the competition One dreaded statement from a customer could make a salesperson turn pale. “Is this your best deal?” “I’ve visited a couple of your competitors and they are willing to sell for less.” “Thanks, but we want to shop around before we make a decision.”

How many of us have recently heard, “Our business has been so good for the past five years we haven’t felt a need to do any sales training, but things are different now and we need help!” In today’s market of intense competition and constant margin pressure, this scenario continues to replay itself.

When not prepared for the price resistance seen in tough market conditions, a weak salesperson stammers with a poorly thought-out response like, “Well, let me see what I can do.”

Is it really about price or is it value? Let’s consider some solutions.

What is value anyway?

The truth is value, like beauty, is quite subjective. It is, indeed, in the eye of the beholder. It is incumbent upon every salesperson to find out exactly what the customer values. Be sure to lead with your ears and ask the questions that reveal what your customer actually values. The customer’s definition of value is more important than yours.

In tough markets we need to learn to sell value by differentiating all of our deliverables. The degree to which we are perceived as different from and better than the competition is critical today.

To customers, salespeople often appear to offer just about the same products and services. Your prospective customers may be busy commoditizing your solution, in which case you must be busy differentiating it. The bottom line is this: unless you can create a powerful and distinct difference to the customer, you are not going to stand out from the crowd.

So the question is: “How do I separate myself and our offerings from the competition?” The answer: you’ve just got to be different—really different. And it’s not always about price!

Seven Ways to Differentiate Yourself from the Competition 1. Product differentiation. How is your product different from or better than your competitors’? If you can’t come up with some solidly unique components, you may be in danger of being perceived as just another commodity. Here’s a strategy: now that you know what your customers value, perhaps you and others within your business can make product enhancements a major initiative. The collective intellect of this group might well be able to create something unique about your product or service; then creatively exploit every aspect of the difference and tie it into what the prospective customers told you they wanted. Your goal is to come up with both UCAs (unique competitive advantages) and RAs (relative advantages).

2. Price Differentiation. Unsophisticated marketing and sales people often think the best way to get business is by under pricing everybody else. Thin margins have put more companies out of business than any other single factor. If the boss chooses to go to market as the low-price provider, your store better have every expense category cut to the

Cardinal rule: Make it easy for the customer to communicate and buy.

In conclusion, revisit the original price objections mentioned at the beginning. Your goal should be to transition your customer from a discussion on price to a discussion on the differentiated deliverables you offer. When the customer asks if that is your best price, you should be able to say, “It is very easy to simply focus on apparent price rather than actual cost. I would ask that you give me a few minutes to allow me to distinguish between our product offerings and those of our competitors.” After getting her permission to continue, you should go into your differentiated advantages, building the value of your product solutions in light of her expressed needs. The nation still isn’t quite in the clear in terms of the recession as thousands of homes are still being foreclosed on every day, businesses are popping up and then in an instant they’re gone. It’s very apparent that we are still in recovery mode. However, it’s impossible to reach for your future if both of your hands are gripping the past. Simply stated— yes—we are still dealing with economic turmoil, but it’s important not to forget about what happens once everything is “ok.” Plans still need to be made for postrecovery business. The beauty and barber supply industry still needs to embrace innovation, new technology and new ways of doing business.

It is important to reach out to your manufacturer and distributor partners for product education and information that you can pass along to your customers. Educating customers about the proper way to use the products you sell can make a difference in how well those products move at your store. Proper merchandising also makes a difference.

Below are a few select tips and tidbits of information that OTC Beauty Magazine shared with you this year that can help you make the most of 2011.

Protect Your Store

Product loss through theft, damage and pilferage is a common problem among shop owners and retailers. Regardless of where a store is located and what it sells, the challenge about security is never-ending. Without a reliable system to protect products, stores will be at the losing end. However, this type of security problem can be avoided. If you don’t already have one, think about investing in a security system. The extra security can cut down on your liability if something happens at your establishment and it could also help lower your insurance premiums.

Protecting your business is especially important during the holiday season when crimes like theft, robberies and even muggings are rampant. It’s not just obvious in-store crimes that can create a problem for your business—employee theft can be an issue as well. The National Retail Federation estimates that retailers lost $11.7 billion in 2009 as a result of retail fraud. Retail fraud includes practices such as stealing merchandise and then returning it for a refund, creating fake sales receipts to return merchandise, etc.

Protect yourself by posting clear, concise return policies. Make sure that you are properly staffed to handle holiday traffic and that you are able provide every customer with quality shopping assistance.

Helping customers select the right items during their initial purchase can help cut down on returns.

It’s important to protect yourself and your business investment, but it’s also important not to treat customers as if they are criminals. Show your customers respect, allow them to shop and remember to be available when they need you.

The community around you is changing and that means your customer is changing. Consumers are better educated about the products that are available to them for use on their hair and more.

Product information as well as opinions on products from trusted sources (social media network circles and close friends) have become instantly available via YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and more. This allows consumers to find out quickly what products work great, which products are not so hot and which products they should try that maybe they’ve traditionally overlooked.

Feature important that your employees are educated about the products you sell. It’s not enough to simply look at a box and match the look of the customer with the image on the packaging. Customers with similar skin colors can have very, very different hair textures and there are quality products to address each one. While nobody expects your staff members to go get cosmetology licenses, basic product education is important. Understanding the needs of customers is important. If you do happen to have an in-store salon, solicit your stylists to help out with answering product questions on the sales floor if they are not busy. Let your sales staff know that it is ok to ask the stylists product questions. It will all help to add profits to your bottom line.

Show Reports

As a member of the beauty and barber supply industry, it is imperative that you attend tradeshows throughout the year.

Tradeshows keep you in the loop about a multitude of benefits for your business. Events such as the Western Buying Conference and Cosmoprof North America are where manufacturers reveal new packaging, new products, new product technology, sometimes classes are even held in conjunction with the shows. The classes cover a range of topics that can help you understand the changing industry. Attending these events will also allow you to network with other members of your industry.

As you plan for 2011, keep in mind that the Western Buying Conference takes place on January 13-14 and Cosmoprof North America will take place July 24-26. Both shows take place in Las Vegas. Search the Internet for specific deals from each show regarding attendance and travel.

In addition to international tradeshows, it is important that you attend your local distributor shows as well. These events put you in contact with your suppliers and the manufacturers they work with. Distributor shows offer a great opportunity to interface with distributors and product companies to let them know what you need as well as what types of items your customers are requesting. Also, at many of these distributor shows you can take advantage of great product deals. Call your local distributor for more information.

Looking Ahead to 2011

As 2010 comes to a close, retailers and manufacturers alike should remember that value will continue to be important to consumers.

The caliber of customer service that you provide will always be remembered by your customers, more than the amount of money they paid for something in your store.

When it comes to your product selection in 2011, think about diversifying your store offering with skin care products. Skin care is a growing category and companies are recognizing this as they continue to develop new items to address specific needs for ethnic skin.

Additionally, remember to offer hair care items that cater to diverse textures and needs. Not every customer relaxes their hair. Not every customer uses products with chemicals—lots of customers are fans of natural hair care and skin care products.

Learn from what you accomplished and didn’t accomplish during the past year. If you’re willing to learn from your past, you can always remain optimistic about your future.

OTC Beauty Magazine (OTC): Please tell our readers a little bit about your day-to-day roles with Morning Glory Products. How did both of you become involved with this company?

Calvin Garris (CG): My role as owner is I am the overseer of the company. I make sure the company is running smoothly on a day-to-day basis. I receive daily reports in addition to the current status of the business. My job is to also make sure that the Morning Glory Products advertising and market approach is up-to-date because I create all of the new product concepts.

Monday is our busiest day due to orders coming in from the weekends. I became involved with this company as it was my husband’s vision and I was excited about helping him bring his dream to fruition.

CG: Currently, Morning Glory Products has a small staff. Our business is expanding very quickly so we are looking to hire more staff in the near future. Our company is structured with a CEO, president, marketing director, sales representatives, distributors and team members. Morning Glory Products also has an outside manufacturer to produce and package products including a certified chemist/ developer.

OTC: What is the corporate culture like at Morning Glory and how does it affect day-to-day operations as well as product development?

CG: Morning Glory Products is a family-oriented company. We will look at diversifying our business as we hire more staff. Diversification is important to our company as we seek to hire qualified applicants of all races.

OTC: Please explain how your OTC store partners can benefit from carrying the Morning Glory line. How can they purchase the items from your line?

CG: Our OTC store partners can benefit by carrying the Morning Glory line because we provide higher profit margins to retailers from carrying our line. Morning Glory Products is constantly bringing in new and innovative products to the industry that help OTC stores to keep selling other products such as weave care [because] our product works simultaneously with weave. In essence, if OTC stores buy our products they will exponentially enhance the sale of their weave care products.

When it is time for [the consumer] to remove their weave, all the consumer has to do is rinse for a few minutes and the weave is out! No other product or compound can provide this unique experience.

OTC: What other products have you created based on consumer demand to meet the needs of new trends?

CG: Gro-Protect Solutions was actually the first product that was developed to meet the trend at the time. Remember, Morning Glory Products is a new company; we have only been in business a few years.

However, we are constantly creating new and inventive products to meet the demand of up-and-coming new trends.

OTC: What is Morning Glory’s point of difference? What do your products offer beauty and barber suppliers that perhaps some of the other popular product companies do not?

CG: Morning Glory is different from similar products because we seek to find solutions not only for the stylist but for the needs of the consumer as well. Gro-Protect Solutions offers a Restoring Glosser which lubricates the scalp and controls itch. It can be used on natural as well as synthetic hair and wigs. Beauty and barber suppliers alike can utilize this high definition glosser as it is a unisex product. Additionally, a “3-n-1” holding spray as well as a shampoo and conditioner are in development that both beauty and barber suppliers can utilize.

OTC: What are some of the newest items available from Morning Glory?

What tips do you have to help retailers incorporate these new items into their product offering?

CG: Morning Glory Products is constantly developing new and innovative products for skin care, hair care and other forward-thinking ideas by Mr. Calvin Garris. We advise retailers to have an area designated to advertise the product line for our new and innovative products in an effort to increase sales. Advertising Morning Glory Products will keep returning customers coming back, while new customers will want to try our revolutionary products for hair and skin care.

OTC: Do you have any additional product debuts planned for 2011? Will you be replacing anything or supplementing anything in your line with these new products?

CG: Yes, we do. Morning Glory Products will debut a new product that has never been seen before until now. We will be introducing a new “3n-1” holding spray. No longer will a consumer have to buy three different holding sprays. They will be able to have all-in-one hold. At this time, nothing from our line will be replaced as we develop quality products.

OTC: Please tell us about the point-of-purchase display material that you have available to OTC stores.

CG: To God be the Glory! Morning Glory Products have not been affected much as changes have not been drastic. This is due to the need and demand of our product by the retailers and consumers. We are very thankful that the economy has not affected our growth.

OTC: How do you determine when the time is right to add new product offering to Morning Glory?

CG: Morning Glory Products does not copy other products as we are developers. Developing a new product is a slow process. Our company produces quality products as our certified chemist/developer works methodically in ensuring the process runs proficiently. The time frame to produce a new product is about six months. We do not rush any process as I believe timing is based on God’s time, not our time.

OTC: What kinds of educational material does Morning Glory provide to retail partners? Does this material educate the storeowner, the consumer or both?

CG: Yes, we educate retail partners and consumers as we provide instructional videos; offer classes, handouts and online tutorials in addition to personal answering phone calls.

OTC: I’ve seen Morning Glory at a few industry trade shows throughout 2010, what kind of education do you offer consumers at these events to help facilitate the popularity of your brand?

CG: We try to arrange classes for most of the trade shows we attend.

We provide education about our products so that consumers have information and an understanding of how our products work.

OTC: What do you feel is the biggest challenge that Morning Glory faces doing business in the beauty industry today? How is the company rising to that challenge?

CG: Our biggest challenge is dealing with other companies that try to copy our product. We are rising to this challenge by trusting in God and ensuring that our customers are satisfied with the quality product that they receive.

OTC: What final thoughts would you like to share with OTC readers about Morning Glory and the products that your company offers?

간은 살면서 누구나 행복한 삶을 살기를 바라고 있다. 행복이라는 것은 개개인의 여건과 관점에 따라 판이하게 차이가 나겠지만 모두 자기 기준에서의 행복한 생활을 꿈꾸고 있는 것이다. 우리나라 헌법

에도 행복추구권이라는 것이 명시되어 있다. 하지만 작금의 시대에는 자신의 행복을 위해서 남을 밟고 일어 서는 경우가 종종 있다. 물론, 경쟁사회에서 남들보다 뒤처지는 것이 바람직하다고 할 수 없겠지만, 자신의 이익만을 생각 한다면 반드시 남의 행복을 빼앗는 결과를 초래하게 된다. 많은 성인들과 철학자들이 더불어 살면서 서로의 행복을 지켜 주라고 외쳐 왔지만 인간의 본능적인 이기심은 이를 묵과하고 자신의 행복만을 챙기기 바빴다. 좀 거창하게 시작을 하였지만, 이번에 OTC 뷰티 매거진에서 인터뷰한 앨라배마 몽고메리에 위치한 Beauty City의 김상규 사장은 타인들의 행복을 남들보다는 조금 더 생각하며 자신의 행복을 찾아가 는 사람이었다. 경쟁에서 살아남기 위해 남들을 짓밟기 보다는 경영의 차별화를 통해 이를 극복하려는 김사 장의 차별화 경영에 대한 이야기를 들어보자.

차별화된 스토어 환경을 만 들어야 합니다 김사장은 1998년에 도미하여 2년 뒤 인 2000년에 뷰티 서플라이를 운영하 는 처형의 영향으로 뷰티 업계에 뛰 어들게 되었다고 한다. 직장생활만 을 해오다 처음으로 스토어 운영을 시 작한 김사장은 지난 10년간, 처음엔 1,000sq ft의 작은 스토어에서 시작 하여 4,000sq ft으로 옮긴 후 현재는 6,000sq ft 스토어와 2008년에 오픈 한 2,000sq ft의 2호점도 가지고 있을

운 스토어들의 오픈과 점점 심해지는 경 쟁 탓에 사뭇 긴장감이 돌고 있는 상태 라고 한다. “가격으로 승부하지 않고 경 쟁에서 살아남을 수 있는 키워드는 차별 화, 전문화 인데, 그것을 현실화 시키는 것이 쉽지 않습니다” 라는 김사장은 고 객과 친해지기 위해 먼저 고객들의 이름 을 외웠다고 한다. “사람 이름을 외우는 데 소질이 없지만, 종이에 사람들의 특 징을 적어가며 이름을 외우기 시작 하였 습니다. 스토어에 들어오는 사람들의 이 름을 불러주면 고객들도 웃으면서 스토 어를 들어오게 됩니다” 라고 하며 “월마 트나 대형마트에 가면 손님들이 그러한 경험을 하지 못할 것입니다. 이러한 것 이 대형마트와 차별화 되는 것 아니겠습 니까?” 라고 이어갔다. 사실 웃으며 자 신의 이름을 불러주는 스토어에 누가 등 을 돌리겠는가? 이는 ‘불조심’과 같이 아 무리 강조하여도 지나치지 않는 스토어 경영의 기본일 것이다.

기 위해 세일즈맨들에게 많은 질문을 던 진다고 한다. 물론, 직원들에게 제품에 관한 지식을 섭렵시키는 것도 잊지 않고 있었다. 또한, 김사장은 합리적인 경영을 위해 POS시스템을 사용하고 있다고 한다. “ 예전에는 감으로 가늠하던 제품의 움직 임을 이제는 정확한 데이터로 볼 수 있 으니 얼마나 편리합니까?” 라는 김사장 은 처음에 설치하는 시간이 많이 걸려 서 그렇지 한번 설치하고 나면 정말 많 은 시간을 절약할 수 있다며 POS 예찬 론을 폈다. 아직도 많은 스토어들이 예 전의 방식을 버리지 못하고 있는데, 문 명의 이기를 받아들여 잘 활용 한다면, 이는 분명 스토어에 도움이 될 수 있을 것이다.

“다른 지역의 유행이 이 지역에는 늦게 오거나 실패하는 경우 가 많습니다” 라는 김사장은 지역의 소비자들이 보수적인 성 향을 띄우고 있어 새로운 상품을 취급하려 할 때는 매우 보수 적이 되어야 한다고 한다. 하지만 일단 새로운 상품을 들여오 면 신상품 섹션을 만들어 놓고 몇 개를 오픈하여 손님들이 만 져보고 친숙해질 수 있게 한다고 하는데, 이는 확실히 효과가 있다고 한다. 또한, 신상품 취급을 신중히 하다 보면 자연스레 많은 악성 재고가 생기지 않는 이점도 있다고 한다. 김사장은 스토어 내에서뿐만 아니라 주변의 스토어들도 잘 활용해야 한다고 한다. “현재 저희 스토어 바로 옆에 옷 가게 가 있습니다. 우리 스토어를 들어오는 손님 중 꽤 많은 비중 의 손님들이 옆 스토어를 들렸다 옵니다. 이유는 옷을 구입한 후에 그에 맞는 머리를 고르기 위해서 입니다”라는 김사장은 이점도 간과하지 않고 경영에 접목 시키려 한다고 한다. 아직 은 실행하고 있지 않지만, 옆 스토어와 연계를 하여 크로스 오 버 딜을 만들어 볼 구상을 하고 있었다. “만약 옆에 식료품점 이 있는 스토어라면 사람의 발길이 많이 닿아, 그에 따른 이익 을 볼 수도 있습니다” 라며 주변의 환경을 간과 해서는 안 된 다고 한다.

과도한 경쟁은 모두에게 독이 됩니다 현재 전국적으로 경쟁이 과열되고 있는 분위기다. 이에 대해 김사장은 “지금과 같은 과도한 경쟁으로 인한 가격 저하는 스 토어뿐만 아니라 모두에게 피해를 입히는 것입니다. 스토어의 마진이 줄어들면 스토어오너가 힘들어지는 것은 물론, 직원들 의 월급도 올라가지 못할 것이고, 스토어 내에서도 품질이 다 소 떨어지는 상품만을 취급하게 됨으로 소비자들도 눈 앞에서 는 돈을 절약하는 것처럼 보이지만 궁극적으로는 손해를 보는 64

것입니다” 라며 자신의 생각을 피력 하였다. 물론, 가격경쟁 을 즐기는 스토어 오너는 없겠지만, 그보다는 다른 방식을 찾 아 서로에게 이익이 되는 경쟁을 하는 것이 바람직한 일일 것 이다.

모두의 행복을 기원합니다 스토어를 경영하는 목적이 무엇이냐는 질문에 김사장은 “모 든 사람이 행복했으면 좋겠습니다” 라는 거창한 대답을 내 놓 았다. 이를 자세히 들여다 보니, 직원들의 행복, 고객들의 만 족, 그리고 가족들의 행복을 위함이라고 한다. 스토어를 경영 하면서 고객의 만족을 우선시 해야 한다는 것은 모두가 공통 적으로 가지고 있는 생각일 것이다. 물론, 가족의 행복 또한 그렇다. 하지만 김사장은 직원들 에게도 많은 애정을 쏟고 있 었다. 예를 들자면, 김사장이 예전에 한 흑인 직원에게 5년 동 안 스토어에서 근무를 하면 일정 금액을 적립하여 5년 후에 돌려주기로 약속을 한적이 있다고 한다. 이러한 생각의 발단 은 대부분의 직원들이 돈을 모으질 못하는 것에 안타까움을 느껴서라고 한다. 표면적으로 보면 직원을 잡아두려 하는 것 처럼 보일 수 있지만 김사장은 전적으로 직원에게 도움이 되 고자 시도한 것이었다고 한다. 또한 현재의 직원이 얼마 전 응급실을 다녀 왔는데 병원비가 많이 나와 어려워하는 모습 을 보고 직원들에게 혜택을 줄 수 있는 보험을 알아보고 있다 고 한다. 김사장이 이러한 생각을 가질 수 있는 것은 오랜 신 앙 생활이 영향을 끼쳤을 것으로 생각된다. 마지막으로 업계 에 대해 하고 싶은 말로 “일방의 희생만을 요구하지 말고 같 이 공생하는 방법을 모색했으면 좋겠습니다” 라는 말을 남기 고 인터뷰를 마쳤다.

Therapy Trends OTC Value Drivers— Origin,Texture and Cosmeceuticals

Despite the economic crisis, value-conscious consumers were not willing to sacrifice. A review of 2010 confirmed that consumers sought the most ideal products at the best prices. They wanted “OTC” from their OTCs—products based on “Origin, Textural variety and Cosmeceutical promise.” Products for hair, face, and body care based on exotic ingredients originating from Morocco, the Arctic and Brazil. Textural variety was key as consumers debated alternatives to relaxers or solutions for multiethnic hair types. Clinically-proven actives were the hallmark of cosmeceutical technology. In this down economy consumers demanded the very best innovation at the very best price.

The year in review showed the prominence of hardworking naturals and botanicals. Multicultural diversity yielded versatility beyond skin, hair and bath products. Exotic oils have been formulated into relaxers, as well as before and after styling agents. Consumers are less confused by cosmeceutials and expect natural, therapeutic ingredients. Economy and eco-friendly beauty brands have merged science, nature and sustainability.

n the heels of a successful Los Angeles event, the Jinny Chicago Show on October 17 marked the halfway point in the season for the Jinny Fall Tradeshows. Vendors and attendees gathered at the JBS C&C Building in Chicago in anticipation of another great event. It quickly became apparent that they would not be disappointed. “It was a phenomenal show,” said James William, vice president of Jinny Chicago. “The show was well attended and the customers were very satisfied,” William added.

Vendors on the show floor featured a variety of special pricing deals on their products which were well-received by

customers. Additionally, the JBS Chicago location welcomed a steady stream of shoppers throughout the day who took advantage of cash and carry specials.

As is customary with all Jinny shows, the attendees at the Chicago show enjoyed great shopping deals and a fresh, catered lunch from Jinny. Also, customers had an opportunity to win a variety of prizes in the Jinny prize raffle held at the conclusion of the show. After the Chicago event, next on the schedule was the Jinny Atlanta Show…

he Jinny Fall Tradeshow season continued on October 24 in Atlanta at the McCall building, home to JBS Hair. Georgia’s unmistakable fall weather was in full effect as the vendors and attendees were initially welcomed by a chilly morning that gave way to a very warm afternoon.

The opening foot traffic at the Atlanta show was light as storeowners and their families trickled into the venue. However, although the aisles weren’t crammed to capacity, it soon became very apparent that the stores in attendance came to the show with one thing in mind—taking advantage of great show deals. As the staff at OTC Beauty Magazine walked through the event, several vendors and manufacturer representatives

talked about the orders they were taking. Overall, vendors were pleased that despite the light traffic, the orders were coming in quickly and in abundance. Regarding the event overall, Eric Horn, a manufacturer representative working the Varisi Products booth at the Atlanta show stated that up to this point in the show season, the Atlanta show was “the best one.”

To show appreciation for the business of their customers, Jinny once again provided a hot Korean lunch to all the attendees and held a raffle at the end of the event where lucky winners received various prizes.

Following a successful Atlanta event, next on the schedule was the Jinny Dallas event to close the show season...

n October 31, vendors and Jinny customers gathered at the Jinny Dallas branch for the final 2010 show of the year to share new products and product information. As with the previous shows of the season, customers came in search of the latest product offerings to take back to their customers at the best prices available.

The Jinny Dallas location closed out Jinny’s trade show season with steady traffic, though not as much seen previously at the Atlanta show.

However, the event still offered a positive finish to the season. “We had a good show this time. We saw a lot of new faces, a lot of new customers and even some of our current customers had opened new stores since the spring shows,” said April Roberts, purchasing manager, Jinny Dallas. In spite of the smaller crowd, “A lot of orders were still written,” added Roberts.

Due to the fact that the show took place on Halloween, some of

the vendors opted to decorate their booths to attract attention and just have a bit of fun during the event. One such vendor was Alberto Culver-Motions.

Alberto Culver employees dressed up in “Wild West” cowboy and cowgirlesque clothing to get into a festive mood. Some of the unique decorations they created were the Wanted posters of Jinny employees that they displayed at the booth as part of the fun.

After enjoying lunch with friends and family, the customers had an opportunity to continue shopping and later took part in the Money Menagerie prize raffle, where winners received various amounts of Jinny Money.

올해의 IT 10위에 삼성 갤럭시 선정 삼성전자의 갤럭시탭과 갤럭시S가 미국 정 보기술(IT) 전문지인 PC월드에서 선정한 ‘ 올해 100대 베스트 IT제품’ 톱10에 포함됐 다. PC월드에 따르면 삼성전자의 태블릿 PC 갤럭시탭이 5위를 차지했으며 미국 이 동전화사업자인 스프린터에서 판매하는 삼 성에픽4G(미국판 갤럭시S)가 8위에 올랐 다. 지금 사는 차가 마지 막 휘발유차? 한번 구입한 차를 10년 이상 타는 소 비자는 앞으로 사는 차가 마지막 휘 발유차가 될지도 모른다. 전기나 수 소연료로 운행하는 친환경차가 15 년쯤 후엔 대중화될 것이란 분석보 고서가 나왔다. 2025년 전기차와 수 소연료전지차 등 친환경차가 가격 경쟁력을 확보해 본격적인 친환경 차 시대가 열릴 것이란 전망이다. 그 만큼 자동차업체들의 개발경쟁이 더 욱 속도를 낼 것으로 예상돼 대중화 시기가 더 앞당겨질 수도 있다. 특히 이번 연구결과는 현대•기아차와 토 요타, 폭스바겐 등 주요 자동차업체 는 물론 쉘과 토탈 등 정유업체까지

려갈 것으로 나타났다. 게다가 2030 년에는 친환경차의 총비용이 크게 줄어든다. 소형차의 경우 내연기관 차와 친환경차 사이의 격차가 오차 범위인 $4,100~$8,200달러로 줄 고 중형차는 $2,700~5,400달러로 까지 축소된다. 특히 SUV는 $2,600 달러까지 격차가 줄어들 것으로 예 상됐다. 이항구 산업연구원 주력산 업팀장은 “친환경차 대중화 시점을 2025년으로 산출한 것은 최근 연구 결과 중에서도 가장 빠른 수준”이라 며 “주요 자동차 메이커와 정유사 등 인프라업체들까지 친환경차시장 이 조기에 확대될 것으로 예상하는 것으로 파악된다”고 말했다.

담배, 매연, 프렌치프라 이가 치매 앞당긴다 담배 연기, 자동차 매연, 프렌치프라이 (French fries)속 함유된 화학물질이 알즈 하이머질환 발병을 촉진시킬 수 있는 것으 로 나타났다. 앨버트아인슈타인의대 연구 팀이 밝힌 연구결과에 의하면 담배 연기와 자동차 매연, 심지어 프렌치프라이속 함유 된 type-2 alkenes 이라는 화학물질들이 알즈하이머질환과 파킨슨병등의 기타 다른 신경학적 질환 발병 위험을 높일 수 있는 것으로 나타났다.이에 앞서 2년전 연구팀 은 아크릴아마이드등의 type-2 alkenes 계 물질들이 동물에서 뇌 속 신경말단을 어떻 게 손상시키는지를 밝힌 바 있다. 연구팀은

이번 연구결과 이 같은 독성 물질이 알즈하 이머질환등의 질병 발병중 신경말단에서도 생성되는 바 담배 연기나 식사 혹은 다른 환 경적 인자에 의해 외부적인 이 같은 물질 노 출이 더해질 시 신경말단에 type-2 alkene 공격이 내외에서 합쳐져 두 배 이상 강력한 영향을 주게 된다라고 밝혔다. 연구팀은 또 한 이번 연구에서 와인 속 레스베라트롤과 카레 심황속 커큐민등에서 추출한 물질이 이 같은 독성물질에 대한 해독제가 될 수 있 는 것으로 나타났다라고 밝혔다. 연구팀은 “2-ACP 라는 단일물질이 type-2 alkene 에 붙어 이 같은 물질의 독성 작용을 중화시 켜 신경세포를 보호할 수 있어 알즈하이머 질환이나 파킨슨병 같은 신경질환에 대한 치료제가 될 수 있다”라고 강조했다.

키스가 알레르기 유발할 수 있다 자신에게 알레르기를 유발할 수 있는 어떤 식 품을 먹은 사람과 키스를 하는 것이 알레르 기 반응을 유발할 수 있다는 연구결과가 나왔 다. 미 연구팀이 ‘미알레르기,천식&면역학저 널’에 밝힌 연구결과에 의하면 알레르기를 자 신에게 유발할 수 있는 식품을 키스 파트너가 섭취한 지 몇 시간이 지났거나 혹은 이 같은 식품을 섭취한 후 양치질을 아무리 철저히 하 더라도 이 같은 사람과 키스를 한 후 알레르 기 반응이 유발될 수 있는 것으로 나타났다.

연구팀은 “자신에게 알레르기를 유발하는 식 품을 키스 파트너가 섭취한 지 몇 시간 후에도 여전히 침 속에 알레르기를 유발하는 항원을 분비하고 있다”라고 했다. 30명의 땅콩에 대 한 알레르기가 있고 재발성 아나필락시스 반 응을 보인 사람을 대상으로 한 이번 연구결과 연구팀은 “파트너가 특정 알레르기가 있을 경 우 파트너에게 알레르기를 유발할 수 있는 물 질에 대한 노출을 가급적 피하고 노출시에는 적어도 수 시간 파트너와 신체적 접촉을 피하 는 것이 좋지만 이 같은 방법으로도 알레르기 를 파트너에게 유발하는 것을 피할 수 없을 수 있다”라고 강조했다.

모발이식 기술, 한국이 최 고!

루성피부염은 성인의 3~5% 발생하는 흔한 염증 성 피부질환으로 얼굴이나 두피, 겨 드랑이, 눈썹 등에 발생한다. 전문가에 따 르면 지루성피부염 원인은 명확히 규명되 지 않았지만 주로 피지가 많은 곳에 발생하 는 것으로 보아 피지선과 관련이 있는 것으 로 보여진다고 설명한다. 또한 전문가들은 건조한 날씨, 스트레스, 노폐물의 축적 등 도 지루성피부염 발생에 영향을 끼치는 것 으로 파악한다. 두피 지루성피부염의 증상 으로는 비듬이 생기고 간헐적으로 가렵거 나 저녁 무렵 심한 가려움증에 시달리며 발 진이나 진물이 나오기도 한다. 두피에서 이 마 얼굴, 눈썹, 겨드랑이, 목까지 퍼지기도 하고 대부분이 증세의 호전과 악화를 반복 한다. 두피를 심하게 긁으면 두피 염증으로 인해 탈모로 이어질 수 있기 때문에 초기 진 단을 통해 치료를 하는 것이 중요하다. 전 문가들은 지루성피부염을 예방하려면 머리 를 깨끗이 씻고 잘 말리는 것이 중요하다고 설명한다. 또 비듬이 심할 때는 비듬 샴푸 등을 이용하는 것이 좋고 제품을 이용 시에 도 증상이 완화되지 않으면 병원을 찾아야 한다고 설명했다. 이어 날씨가 쌀쌀해지면 피부가 건조해져 지루성피부염이 발병 또 는 악화될 수 있기 때문에 건조한 바람을 피 해야 하며 머리에 보습제를 잘 바르는 것이 좋다고 추천했다.
