believe makeup is intended to bring out the best in a woman’s appearance and enhance her beauty. When applied correctly, it can make her eyes sparkle, her skin absolutely radiant and her lips “pop.” With so many different product offerings and application tools there is no wonder why makeup is such big business. Because it is a dominant sector of the beauty industry it is important that you know all about it, from the first dab of concealer your customer puts on each day to the finishing swipe of mascara she applies.

Before we talk about enhancing beauty, we must consider the importance of starting with a clean, healthy canvas. Along your customers’ journeys of finding the best color cosmetics and application techniques for them, be sure to encourage them to keep skin clean, removing all traces of makeup each night (like discussed on page 34). Also, seeing as it is still summer your shoppers are striving to keep legs smooth as they are seeing the light of day thanks to the season’s heat. For this reason they may look to your store for waxing products. Learn about their history on page 28.

Once customers have decided what products they are on the hunt for, be sure that your store is where they go to make purchases. Offering a wide variety of cosmetic products in a multitude of shades is vital to appealing to a large audience. Find information like this and much more in the “Business Tips” and “How Should You Sell It?” sections of this issue.

Please do not get me wrong, I’m not saying makeup is absolutely necessary to make someone beautiful, but it does enhance the already stunning features that everyone possesses.

In this large sea of makeup options, store owners thankfully welcome advice on what items are absolutely necessary in their store.

What cosmetic product(s) do you consider the most important items to sell in an OTC store? Which ones are absolutely necessary for makeup marketing success?

“It would be beneficial for OTC stores to always sell a full array of beauty products. For one, it will enhance the consumer shopping experience and two, continued OTC loyalty. Consumers like to shop where they can get everything they need. But, there are two key items that are “go-to” beauty products, foundations and lip glosses. These are two main consumer beauty staples and are key to an OTC retailer’s makeup success.

Foundations are the most loyal category in beauty, because once a consumer finds the perfect shade match, she will continue to buy that brand. Lip glosses are everyday beauty accessories and can also be impulse purchases if the shade variety is appealing. To help drive sales of this product, OTC retailers should position lip glosses as a secondary placement near the checkout register showcasing seasonal or trend shades.”

Summer is here, and that means short shorts, girly dresses, and skimpy bathing suits are the things to wear this season! But many women dread wearing skin-revealing clothes because they have unwanted—and unsightly—body hair. Of course there are many hair removal options out there, but which one is best? For many, laser hair removal is too expensive; hair dissolving creams are too harsh on sensitive skin; and shaving simply does not leave skin smooth long enough. Waxing, a tried-and-true method for both women and men, remedies many of these issues.

Waxing is a hair removal process that involves applying wax to the skin, then quickly lifting away both the wax and body hair. The hair is removed at the root, thereby taking longer to grow back. Many customers prefer waxing because it is often less expensive, and it lasts longer than some other methods of hair removal (up to 2-8 weeks of smoothness, depending on the area of the body). Waxing also helps exfoliate skin, leaving it smoother and more radiant. And since hair grows in cycles, not all the hairs grow back simultaneously, making upkeep waxing sessions less cumbersome.

The History of Waxing How did waxing become so popular? Waxing actually dates back to Ancient Egypt and the Middle East, where hair removal was considered more hygienic. It is thought to have been invented in response to living in such hot climates, where body odor and parasites were common issues. Women used a mixture of honey and oils to cover areas of unwanted hair and then removed the hair using a thin piece of cloth. Women in the Middle East used a similar process called sugaring, for which a sticky, sugary syrup was used. This kind of mixture is still used today in homemade waxes which usually call for lemon juice, sugar, honey, and other home ingredients.

It took much longer for the West to catch on to the hair removal fad—body hair removal did not become popular in the U.S. until the 1940s when bikini swimsuits came out. Since then, body 28

Hot wax comes in a container that heats wax thoroughly. A spatula is used to spread a thin, even layer of wax on the skin. A thin piece of cloth is applied and rubbed gently in the direction that hair grows. The hair is removed with a swift pull in the opposite direction.

Hot wax kits often include a soothing oil to be applied directly after waxing. This helps to calm freshly waxed skin and to remove excess wax. Many women prefer hot wax because it comes in a variety of formulas aimed at remedying specific skin issues, such as dry or sensitive skin.

For those who prefer a less messy method of at-home waxing, there are waxing strips—pre-coated wax strips that are warmed by rubbing the strips between the hands, peeled apart, and pressed onto the area that is to be waxed. Like with hot wax, the strip is removed with a swift pull in the opposite direction of hair growth.

This method is often preferred by many women because it is less messy, and there is no risk of burning as with hot wax.

Waxing Tips Whichever method is used—salon waxing, hot wax, or wax strips— here are some important tips to follow to reduce the chance of injury and ensure beautiful, smooth skin: 1. Make sure the hair is about 1/8th of an inch long before waxing.

If hair is too short, wait a few days for it to grow out. Longer hair should be trimmed so that skin doesn’t bruise during the waxing session.

2. Avoid sun exposure both before and after waxing, and never wax broken or irritated skin, particularly areas affected by acne.

3. Remove any oil or residue on skin immediately prior to waxing to ensure proper wax adhesion.

4. If using hot wax, carefully test its temperature before applying it to reduce the risk of burns! Hold the spatula at a 45-degree angle to apply perfectly a thin, even layer of wax.

5. If using hot wax or wax strips, be sure to leave about 2 inches of the strip free so that you can get a good grip on the strip when you pull it off. Don’t be scared to pull in a swift, intentional motion close to the skin—this will remove hair quickly and with less pain. A hesitant pull can cause the skin to bruise.

6. For the bikini area and under arm areas, gently pull the skin taught with your free hand while you pull off the strip with your other hand. This helps to avoid bruising.

7. If waxing at home, consider pressing an ice cube on skin after waxing to reduce pain and swelling.

8. Gently exfoliate skin right after waxing. The most common complaint about waxing is that it can often cause painful ingrown hairs. Gentle exfoliation can help reduce this annoying occurrence. There are also products on the market that use alpha and beta hydroxy to prevent ingrown hairs.

The Future of Waxing Waxing can help show body tone and definition, and many men and women feel that hair removal is more hygienic and visually appealing. Because laser hair removal is expensive and shaving is time consuming, it seems that the time-tested tradition of waxing is here to stay. you don’t end up back at home until 2 a.m. The natural instinct is to get into pajamas and into your bed as soon as possible, but if you go that route, you are missing one very important step.

Makeup removal before bedtime is a very important step in your daily skin care regimen, and it is one that often gets skipped.

People are “too busy,” or “too tired” to wash their faces before bed. I’m guilty, too. As a recent college graduate, I remember several nights when I would fall asleep, textbooks piled up around me, and wake up in the morning and wonder why my skin felt greasy and looked less than stellar.

The number one reason to wash your face at night is to give your face a chance to breathe. Regardless of whether or not you are wearing makeup, dirt and other bacteria will still collect inside your pores as you go about your day. If you do not wash it away, this dirt and bacteria will settle into your pores and cause breakouts, maybe even acne. It is not just nighttime, however, when you must remember to wash your face. The morning skin care ritual is of equal importance. If you wash your face in the morning, you will do your best to ensure that you put your best foot, or rather your best face, forward!

Washing your face is important, but it is also the last line of defense between your face and blemishes.

There are several preventative measures that you can take that will give your face that bright glow, even when soap and water aren’t nearby. For starters, how often do you change your pillowcases? My guess would be not often enough. Without realizing it, your pillowcase is probably full of dirt and bacteria. So even if you do wash your face at night, you’ll just wind up cancelling it out if you sleep on a dirty pillowcase night after night. It is best to change your sheets and pillowcases once a week to keep too much dirt from building up. Try it out! You’ll be sure to notice a difference in the appearance of your skin.

Clear skin really is all about prevention. It is so much easier to prevent a blemish from appearing 34

Another great way to keep your skin looking great and prevent dirt and bacteria buildup is to clean your face periodically throughout the day, especially if you know hat you’ll be sweating or getting dirty. It is 2012 and people lead busy lives. So many people are beginning to hit up the gym during the lunch hour from work. Go ahead and prep your face before a workout with a cleansing face wipe. If you sweat with makeup on, you’re just setting yourself up for unsightly blemishes. Your skin will thank you if you take the extra time to remove the makeup before hitting the weights.

Many cosmetic brands now sell face wipes in easy portable containers – great for throwing in your bag as you are on the way to the gym. Be sure to cleanse your face once the workout is finished, too.

The last step to a beautiful face is making sure that you are using the right kind of products for your skin type. Maybe you are like me and are prone to dry skin. Don’t be afraid to try out a moisturizing face wash, but definitely steer clear if you are someone who has oily skin. It would be terrible if you were unconsciously sabotaging your own skin by using improper products! And don’t be afraid to experiment! The beauty counter at your local mall is a great place to get sample-sized bottles of skin care products. That way, you can test out the product and its effect on your face before shelling out the money for a large bottle.

Unless you were lucky enough to hit the genetic jackpot, beautiful skin is going to take time and dedication, but trust me, it’s worth it. The key to getting and maintaining a glowing complexion is prevention. Take the extra two minutes at the end of the night to thoroughly wash your face before hitting the hay. But don’t forget that nighttime isn’t the only time to take care of your skin. Small preventative measures throughout the day will make all the difference.

New rules apply. The artistry of eye makeup transcends yesterday’s “stay within the line techniques.” The traditional categories of liner, shadow, brow, and brush all seem antiquated. Shadows are now liners. Dark liners shadow the upper and lower lid. Brows are feathered with pencils and powders. Blush and eye shadow blend into the same shade of pink. Red lines and defines the eye. Color is applied from the base of the lid to the top of the brow. The future of eye makeup borrows from the past. Eye makeup trendsetters offer sci-fi techniques using traditional products in an outside-the-norm manner. Old product forms offer a more fashion-forward palette.

Consumers take their eye makeup signals from the most luxurious high end runway designers or from the low end chic starlet. They will seek the latest shades or new age techniques from trendy makeup artists who endorse specialty lines. Many consumers who shop for hair and skin products in an OTC may spend their eye makeup dollar in a department store specialty cosmetic section. Your consumer knows that price point is not the issue. Color delivery, precision and technique will get the exact effect at any price.

It appears that the makeup trends that usually accompany the fashion trend can now be seen as a runaway spaceship into the future. There may be a direct contradiction in the eye design versus the fashion designer. Many runway designers have opted for minimal hair and dramatic eyes that draw attention to the face.

Nothing is garish; nothing is shocking. Consumers will look to the future for trends. Blogs, fashion magazines, pop stars and other fashion icons will predict the trends. You can expect consumers to engage the trends within the same season. It used to take at least a year for a runway trend to hit the streets, but today’s consumer has global access to the latest trends. They can create the fashionable look within a week.

Back to the future Catwoman eyes have become popular.

Exaggerated eyeliners are being used to draw on far from discreet lines and double lines. Bright shadows are used instead of liners to change the entire definition of eye makeup. Joan Crawford’s brows are back. Punk rock smoky-smudged eyes take on a futuristic glow with sparkles. Unconventional color will blur the line between shadow and liner. Pastels will be brushed on with eyeliners. Colorful mascaras or tinted false lashes will be a staple for old and young.

These contradictions result in unconventional uses of eye design product forms.

Eye makeup choices are heavy, deliberate and multidimensional. They dominate the facial makeup and draw attention to the eyes. Looks from the 40s, 50s and 60s bring a dominant, exaggerated look to the market. One theory states that unconstructed, sleeker hair styles lead to the focus on the face.

Muted facial makeup further accents the dramatic treatment of the eye. The burst of color is focused on eye makeup. Even the most conservative consumers will test the boundaries by trying more avant-garde shades and structures.

When expanding the makeup section, unexpected shades should be the direction. Extended shade offerings will be expected. Multi-functional uses should be kept in mind. Lash and brow products are now color accents. No longer will eye pencils and liners only be in demand in black or brown. Some consumers will want a smudge proof eye shadow base to accommodate the expansion of upper and lower lid applications. Eye Brows will require brushes that thicken and define by adding powder and brow shapers. Gel eyeliners and lash thickeners are product forms to consider from more trendy makeup lines. Mascaras are worth their weight in gold. Consumers spend at high price points for a bold lash product. Consumers may create new looks by using older product forms to create the back to the future looks. Not everyone will want to look like an avatar or Martian everyday. However there is an experimental side to all OTC shoppers that will want to blast into the future by revving up their eye design.

Beyond Beauty Black Women Impacting Communities Second in a Series

s many already know, even in a predominately black community, it can be hard to find the beauty products that cater to people of color. What retailers may not

realize is when they fail to understand black women and serve their needs as consumers, they’re also missing out on opportunities to increase their bottom line. Black women are powerful customers who, according to Roper Reports, a research group, like to look good relative to cost (47 percent as opposed to 31 percent in the general market.) In this second and final series on black women who have been deemed role models in their communities and across the globe, we will learn about what inspires them, their passions and accomplishments.

I had the privilege of interviewing these beautiful and successful black women

in my column, “Role Model – Beyond Beauty” which is published in Sophisticate’s Black Hair Styles and Beauty Care Guide. These women are both a pleasure to the eyes and beautiful in their hearts and souls. The role models are deeply involved in charitable activities, impacting their communities in ways that are saving lives and fulfilling dreams.

Urban Call Briefs Role Model: Pilar Sanders Brief Biography: Since becoming Pilar Sanders, she has devoted herself to raising her three young children and her two teenage step-children (Deion Sanders’ oldest children from a previous marriage). As if raising the kids, managing over 100 acres of land and all that goes with it weren’t enough, Pilar has many personal projects in the works. Pilar is the co-founder and Director of “Prime Time Achievers,” a multi-faceted summer camp for kids.

She has also fulfilled a long-time dream of writing children’s books, two of which have been published, and is the Founder of “Essence of Beshalom,” a foundation that works with young women and girls and focuses on building self-esteem. Pilar is producing a play and she is heavily involved in another charitable organization she founded with Deion called “Sanders Claus,” an organization that helps families in need and makes dreams come true for the underprivileged.

The multi-talented woman has attained many career achievements but has also had her share of personal challenges: she lost her mother, three sisters and a best friend to cancer and diabetes and then learned that she too was a type two diabetic. LaBelle has served as a spokesperson for the American Diabetic and Dietetic Associations and the National Cancer Institute.

The former first lady of the Turks and Caicos Islands is not only an accomplished actress, but an entrepreneur in her right. ttractive, convincing and well-displayed point of purchase or POP displays can make the difference between converting a curious customer into a sure-shot sale. Here are some useful tips for a great presentation.

Customers browsing through the racks are looking for two things: information on the products and a good bargain. POP displays can not only satisfy this need, they can also convert window shoppers into customers and generate sales more effectively than other types of signage.

The most tempting of all point of purchase displays is perhaps the one that says, “Buy Two Get One Free!” But there are other ways to lure a customer into making a snap decision to buy a product.

One way is for POP displays to offer information about the products displayed. Information can be used subtly to make a sales pitch. Without screaming “buy this product,” POP displays can list its advantages, as in the case of organic foods, and convince customers that it’s the best choice they can make.

Creatively designed point of purchase displays never fail to catch the customers’ attention, and there are many types of POP displays. For instance, interior signs, menu boards, floor graphics, counter cards, shelf decals and cut-out displays.

There’s a wide range of point of purchase displays to choose from. Choose carefully because the type of POP display should match your product and business requirements. For instance, a larger-than-life cut-out doesn’t work in a restaurant, but a countercard will.

Similarly, innovatively designed flood graphics may not be a good option in a restaurant, but they could work wonders in a retail store. As a POP display, a floor graphic usually involves a logo and minimal lettering. It can be used to direct customers to a certain section of the store or to directly advertise a product.

Not many entrepreneurs use floor graphics as point of purchase displays but they never fail to draw attention. Using durable vinyl underfoot effectively uses space and is a creative canvas that can result in more impulse sales than you had imagined!

Not all customers in a store are there to actually shop. Some are there to window shop, others to while away their time, and still others may be browsing while a friend shoots down the aisle to make

If you’re trying to think up tips for great presentation, you first need to decide on the material you want to use. POP displays can be made of cardboard, paper or card paper inserted into plastic holders, or vinyl as used in floor signs.

The best tip, however, is to be creative and innovative. POP displays are common and if yours stands out from the rest, it will most likely result in an impulse sale!

n this slow economic environment it is important to find ways to bring more customers into the OTC stores. One way to do this is to decorate your stores for the various seasons, holidays, etc. This can be done pretty inexpensively. Visit your local party store or craft store. You can pick up items at a reasonable price to help with your decorations.

Look in the newspaper ads, magazines, and food stores to get some ideas on how you can decorate your stores.

Listed below are some ideas for decorating for the various holidays.

4th of July – Make a display of small American flags. Put up signage in red, white and blue that says “Happy 4th of July.”

You could have a section of special 4th of July items on sale.

You may want to get some of the wrapped red and white mint candies to put in a bowl at the checkout for your customers.

September: Back to School – Make a “Back to School” display; use pictures of a schoolhouse, kids going to school, etc. Do signage for the season, like stating, “Back to School Personal Care Sale – Make sure your family looks their best when they go back to school.” Put up a special table with hair products, brushes, combs, etc. for personal care items.

October: Halloween – Decorate your store with orange and black crepe paper. But a fake or real pumpkin and make a display. Have a special Halloween Sale and advertise treating yourself to these great items to your customers. You could have a bowl of wrapped small candies to give out to your customers.

November: Thanksgiving – Make a Thanksgiving display. Put up a large paper turkey and have fall colored paper on a table.

Make “Happy Thanksgiving” signage, including one for a special Thanksgiving sale and one saying, “We are thankful for our customers and appreciate your business.”

10월: 할로윈- 오렌지색과 검은 색의 주름 종이로 매장을 장식하라. 진짜 호박이나 모형, 어떤 걸로도 장식할 수 있다. 할로윈 특별 세일을 갖고, 당신의 매장이 고객들을 위해 훌륭한 제품들을 제공함을 광고하라. 고객들에게 나눠줄 사탕 바구니를 갖다 놓아도 좋다.

Business Tips December: Christmas – Decorate your store with a blow up Santa and put up “Merry Christmas” signs. Have a special Christmas sale. You may even want to have a small Christmas tree in your store and some type of treats for customers like wrapped hard candy.

Mid-December: New Years Eve – Make a Happy New Year display with silvery paper and signage to encourage customers to “Get ready for New Year’s Eve.” Be sure they see your line of products to make them look beautiful for New Year’s Eve. Have a special New Year sale to get ready for the new year.

You want to make your store a pleasant place to shop and create a nice atmosphere for your customers that will put them in a buying mood and make them feel welcome. Get creative! Try decorating even if it is just for a few of the holidays. Get your store personnel to help by giving you some ideas and participating.

re you going through tough times? It may be time to reflect on some who have been down that road before you.

Everyone faces hardships and disappointments.

For some it’s a work or career crisis. Layoffs and home foreclosures of recent years have cut deep, leaving many in a severe financial crisis that may worsen, with some experts saying that home prices will go down further before we see a slow recovery. For others it’s a health crisis or perhaps a struggling teen, or a relationship that has gone sour. At some point, we all face the pain of trials. When you’re in dark times or caught up in the chaos of a battle, it isn’t easy to see the treasure in your trials. Here are some tips to help you refocus toward not only your goals, but the true gold found in trials.

Go Deep—Find Meaning and Make Changes

Adversity builds character by forcing us to face our deepest beliefs and values. In the crucibles of life, when all the pretend stuff melts away it’s much easier to clarify what is really important and what is not. We have the opportunity to find meaning in our suffering and meaning is a treasure worth finding.

The transformation that we most need isn’t very inviting in good times, but in difficult times our pain can give us the energy and motivation to change our attitudes and behaviors. As Victor Frankl put it, “When we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves.” The painful struggles that we would never choose often afford the greatest opportunity for personal 64

Wisdom gained through the experience of hard times helps us better navigate future minefields. Persevering through tough times also increases our confidence, preparing us for future challenges that will surely come. On the other hand, leaders devoid of crucible experiences are likely to be overly confident about their ideas, and surprisingly more susceptible to fears. Courageously facing our fears in the difficult times gives us both humility and real confidence. The wisdom garnered in hard times about ourselves and life becomes the wisdom that guides us into a better future. Additionally, the difficult trials generate strong emotional memories that stay with us longer and are more easily accessed—gold that we don’t have to search so hard to find.

Don’t Go It Alone

When you are in a battle, you don’t want to be alone—you need supporters in your corner—people who care about you and have your back. They can provide encouragement when your spirit is down and your hope is sagging. Encouragement can provide vital

energy for bouncing back and continuing to persevere. Sometimes a shared idea or a new perspective on a problem can make all the difference. Just knowing someone is near—that you are not standing alone—can provide the needed inspiration, courage, and energy to persevere, even when everything in you is saying it’s too tough to keep going. Every soldier, sailor, airman, and marine knows it’s not good to fight alone. The same is true for all of us. We must stay connected to be resilient and bounce back from trials.

The lingering treasure is that when you have gone through the fire with someone, usually a bond is formed that brings a special relationship for a lifetime.

More than likely, you have already passed through some tough times in your life. It may be helpful to look back and see the treasure that you gained from those past challenges. What was the meaning you gained through those trials? What did you learn about yourself that may be helpful now? What changes did you make then? Who walked with you?

You have a choice. You can let your trials bury you or you can dig for the treasure in them. If you want to discover the gold in your current pit, then answer these questions: How can you find meaning in your current trial? What are you learning about yourself? What changes do you need to make now—in your attitude, mindset or behaviors? What wisdom points are you learning in your current situation that will help you in the future?

Who is walking with you through this fire to provide support? If you follow these tips, someday, looking back, you will see enormous value in your trials.

Another Beautiful Side to Natural Hair Care

Natural hair can take on many faces and it is important for the consumer to find the right products that fit their specific hair care needs. My first priorities are the needs of the natural hair care consumers and our customer service department has been receiving many requests for more information on the care of mixed hair. “Mixed Hair” or “Biracial Hair” is loosely defined as a curly or wavy texture as a result of a mixed-raced union. Many hair care manufacturers use the term “textured” to refer to mixed hair, but truly all hair is textured. The hair can often be curlier than the straight hair of one parent but not quite the texture of the other parent. All natural hair is beautiful and a bold statement of self identity. Many different textures may need a bit of tender loving care and as my lab is currently finishing up on our line of products formulated for mixed hair, I think it may be an opportunity to address natural, mixed and textured hair types.

There are many differences in curly hair verses straight hair. When placed under a microscope the molecular structure of a curly strand of hair is horizontal and can give a fuller, matte appearance. Hair follicles of straighter hair produce more oil and more brushing is required to ensure proper detangling. So it is truly valid that hair that is mixed with both traits

may run into issues with care, maintenance and styling.

The first step to natural mixed tresses or otherwise is to embrace your hair…period. Your head of hair is yours and yours alone, so be proud and bold in your styling choice, but be sure to take care of the hair and give it the nourishment it needs to looks its best.

Mixed hair can often be a combination of oily and dry, but the consumer should choose products that are not oil based. This can often add to the problems of dry hair. Products that are cream or moisture based such as Jamaican Mango & Lime’s Cactus Leave In Moisturizer do not saturate the hair with oil, but act as a natural humectant to help hair retain its natural oils. A wide toothed comb should always be used to detangle and control the hair. A boars-bristle brush can be used for styling purposes. Finally, weekly deep conditioning and a trim every eight to ten weeks will help control the hair and keep it looking brilliant. Split ends create more tangles and give a frizzy appearance to the hair.

No matter what the hair type, healthy hair is beautiful, happy hair and taking a few steps to ensure the hair is in its best state—coupled with the right products—will produce the best results. Retailers should keep this in mind when stocking new items in their product mix.

Choosing the Right Makeup Brush There are so many choices

when it comes to purchasing makeup brushes that it can seem overwhelming. Not only are there hundreds of different styles available to achieve endless makeup looks, but there are many factors that go into the actual construction of a brush. These factors determine the quality and cost of a makeup brush as well as the ease of product application. Hair type is the most important consideration followed by ferrule type and handle.

Hair Type:

Makeup brushes are available in both natural hair and synthetic filament. Natural hair brushes have long been considered the superior choice for application of powder product because they have a hair cuticle which grabs powder product and releases it on the face with precision.

The smooth synthetic filaments of the past were not able to achieve the same results, relegating synthetic brushes to be used strictly with cream and liquid product. However, a new generation of synthetic filament has been introduced over the last few years. These filaments are made to apply almost identically to natural hair. Some of the most advanced synthetics have been made to have an actual cuticle giving them the same characteristics as natural hair. The new generation of synthetics is often as expensive as high end natural hair, but well worth the money. Brushes made from these synthetic filaments offer durability and versatility that the most luxurious natural hair brush does not have.

Natural hair brushes can be made from a variety of hair types. Each hair type has specific

characteristics that determine the shape of the brush it is used to make. In addition, there are many different grades, or quality levels, available for each specific hair type. The highest grade natural hair is much softer than a lower grade hair and will be much more durable, maintaining its shape considerably better than a brush made with lower grade hair. Among the most popular natural hair types used for makeup brushes are goat, squirrel, sable and pony hair. Goat hair brushes are considered the workhorse of the beauty industry. They are often used to make powder and blush brushes because of their precise application and durability.

Sable and squirrel hair brushes are ideal for application of eye makeup. Firm

sable hair will flawlessly place eye shadow while soft squirrel hair, with its conical shape, is excellent for brushes used for blending. Pony hair, typically used for economy grade brushes, is a soft hair used for everything from powder to eye styles.

Synthetic filament is most often used for brushes made

specifically to apply liquid and cream product and are superior in the application of foundation, concealer and lipstick.

The smooth filament gives a flawless, streak-free application. Newly developed synthetics are now used regularly to make every style of brush, giving the user the ability to use these brushes both wet and dry with added durability.

Ferrule Type: There are a few different materials used to make a ferrule for a cosmetic brush. Most economy brushes are made using an aluminum ferrule. An aluminum ferrule August 2012 OTC Beauty Magazine

Feature is softer than its more expensive counterparts and can easily be scratched or deformed. A nickel ferrule is a higher grade ferrule and will not dent easily or rust. A chrome or titanium plated brass ferrule is among the highest quality ferrule and will not dent or rust, and is coveted for its durability and resistance to damage.

Handle Type: There are two common types of handles used in the construction of makeup brushes: kiln-dried hardwood, and acrylic or plastic. Hardwood handles are most commonly used and are very durable. However, an acrylic or plastic handle has the added benefit of being impervious to water damage, making them more durable than any wood handle.

As you can see, there is a lot that goes into the manufacture of makeup brushes. Brush selection often times comes down to what the consumer is willing to pay for their brushes. It will truly make a difference in the long run if you buy the best makeup brush you can afford. High quality brushes are worth what you pay for them and can last for years with proper care.

4. Never soak the brushes in water.

5. Reshape and lay brushes flat to dry on a clean towel.

OTC Beauty Magazine (OTC): What is your background as it pertains to both this company and the beauty business?

Marc Spilo (MS): I grew up in the beauty business.

Working summers meant working in the warehouse, road trips with our salesmen to see customers, or going to factories to see how quality implements were made. It seemed natural for me to join the company when I finished college, which I did and have been president and CEO since 1997. The beauty business is an industry of long-standing partnerships and I want to make sure that Spilo Worldwide maintains those valued relationships.

OTC: What do you consider to be the secret to true beauty?

MS: Well…beauty is in the eye of the beholder. As it pertains to business, it is truly a thing of beauty when you can build a reputation of integrity with customers, vendors, employees and all other industry partners.

OTC: Please provide our readers with a brief history of Spilo. What belief or idea is the company founded on?

MS: My father, Charles G. Spilo, started this company after coming to the U.S. from France to work with his uncle selling hair color. He was intrigued by the beauty industry and saw great potential. He began the business importing curling irons from France, which he branded Monsieur Charles.

OTC: Is there a certain success story that Spilo is distinctly proud of and would like to share?

MS: We are extremely proud of our 70-year heritage and the successes that have made this possible. Our proprietary lines feature products that have stood the test of time and are still popular today. Mehaz implements, Flowery Nail and Pedicure Products, and Speed-o-Guide clipper combs are just some of our brands. Our decades-long successful relationships with our exclusive partners, including Personna, Colora, Velcro and more also make us extremely proud and have all contributed to reaching our 70-year milestone.

OTC: How would you classify your product offerings and structure of the company? Are there any items that are most popular and have stood the test of time?

MS: Spilo is a manufacturer, importer and Master Distributor of hair, nail and skin care products. We have 16 of our own proprietary brands, eight exclusive lines and also distribute the most popular open lines to our customers. We sell to beauty distributors, OTCs, schools and to 45 countries internationally.

OTC: What indicates that it is time to release a new product and what factors determine the kind of product it will be?

MS: There are many factors that are a part of new product development. Understanding the needs of the customer is key. Market research and keeping track of trends are critical.

Knowing what your customers are doing in the salon helps you to stay on top of their needs to develop timely new tools.

Seasonality also impacts the timing for release of a new product. For example, summer is high season for pedicures and waxing, so it makes sense to release those types of products in time to be in the stores in April, when salons are preparing for this busy season.

OTC: Who do you consider to be the target audience for Spilo’s products? Are there certain customers you cater to?

MS: While the end target audience for our products is the salon professional and discerning OTC shopper, we do not sell directly to them. However, with the variety of products we sell, we do not cater to one specific class of trade, but across many classifications, including Full Service, OTC, Salon Chains, Beauty Schools, etc. We carry products that appeal to each of these industry segments.

OTC: What marketing advice would you give OTC store owners about how to properly present and retail your product lines?

MS: The best advice is to keep the store clean and organized. Utilize manufacturers’ displays whenever you can, as they are designed to both educate the consumer and display the products in an organized fashion. Be sure the shelves are well stocked. Many customers will just walk out if they cannot easily find what they want. Educate your sales staff to be attentive but not aggressive; to provide helpful suggestions and recommendations that result in add-on sales.

We also prepare product sell sheets and brand background presentations that our sales team shares with their customers. The more familiar the store personnel are with the quality of our products and the brand overall, the easier it is for them to make a recommendation. Our Spilo website also provides information on all of the products that Spilo carries.

OTC: What future plans are in store for the company through 2012 and into the new year?

MS: For the balance of 2012, we will be focusing on our Breast Cancer Awareness drive and our Holiday promotions.

We are working very hard to bring some exciting new products to market in early 2013, but I don’t want to tip our hand just yet!

OTC: What do you feel is the most important thing for multicultural beauty store owners to know when recommending your company’s products to their customers?

MS: We have some very specific products that appeal to the multicultural trade and they are all top quality in their categories. Personna Hair Shaper Blades are made in the USA using high tech equipment that guarantees consistent sharp edges. 상을 살아가는 사람들마다 그들의 시간적 가 치는 모두 다르다. 개개인의 시간적 가치를 수 치로 환산할 수는 없지만, 현재 직업을 갖고 일을 하 고 있는 사람이라면, 냉정히 말해서, 시간대비 본인 의 수익이 그 가치를 나타내는 한가지 척도가 될 수 있다. 물론, 그것이 절대적인 평가일 수는 없지만, 자 본주의 사회에서는 어쩔 수 없이 그것이 수치로 나타 나는 성적표가 되기도 한다. 모두들 이 수치를 끌어 올리고 싶어하는 것은 당연한 것이다. 그러기 위해서 부단히 노력들을 하며 살아가고 있다. 스토어를 경영 하는 오너들도 예외는 아니다. 하루, 한달, 일년의 매 상을 올리기 위해 수많은 시도와 계획을 만들며 보다 나은 방향으로 나아가려 노력들을 하고 있다. 하지 만, 요즘 가장 안타까운 것 중 하나는, 서로간의 무분 별한 가격경쟁으로 인해 본인들의 가치를 끌어 내리 고 있다는 사실이다. 심지어, 그러한 경쟁이 자존심 싸움으로 번지는 경우에는 주위의 눈살을 찌푸리게

까지 만들고 있다. 편협한 마음을 버리고, 스토어와 자신의 가치를 높이기 위해 다른 방법을 물색해야 할 것이다. 이번 달에 OTC Beauty Magazine 에서 인터 뷰한 Smyrna, Georgia 에 위치한 MS Beauty Supply 사장인 서현석씨는, 주변을 의식하지 않고 본인의 가 치를 높이 끌어 올리는 경영을 하는 오너 중 한 사람 이다. 이것이 현명함인지, 무모함인지, 그와의 인터 뷰를 통해 알아 보도록 하자.

간단한 아이디어를 통한 공간의 활용 한국에서 자영업을 하다 친형이 미국에 연고를 두고 있던 연유로 인해 95년도에 도미한 서사장은 바로 뷰티 업계 에서 일을 시작하였다고 한다. 뷰티 서플라이 스토어에서 일을 하며 뷰티일을 배운 서사장은 “배운 것이 도둑질이 라고, 결국엔 뷰티 서플라이 스토어 경영을 시작하게 되 었습니다” 라며, 4년 전부터 현재의 MS Beauty Supply 를 운영하게 되었다고 한다. 2,400 sq ft 규모의 스토어 에는 여느 뷰티 서플라이 스토어와 다름없이 제품들로 빼 곡히 차 있었다. 그런데 다른 스토어들과는 달리 눈에 띄 는 섹션이 있었다. 바로, 쇼케이스 뒤에 진열해 놓은 헤어 제품들의 디스플레이 들이다. 스토어의 면적을 최대한 이 용하기 위해 다른 스토어들에서는 보기 힘든 디스플레이 방법을 사용하고 있었다. 계산대 뒤에 헤어를 진열해 놓 는 공간에 미닫이 문과 같은 것을 설치하여 이중으로 헤 어 제품들을 걸어 놓을 수 있게 만들어 놓았다. 여느 스토 어들처럼 벽면에 헤어 제품들을 걸어놓고, 그 앞쪽에 레 일을 설치하여 옆으로 미는 문처럼 만들어 헤어 제품들을 걸어 놓을 수 있는 공간을 만든 것이다. 이렇게 함으로 해 서 50 ~ 60% 의 헤어 제품 디스플레이 공간이 늘어나게 되었다. “부족한 공간을 보며 고안해낸 디스플레이 방식 인데, 많은 도움이 되고 있습니다” 라는 서사장은, 앞쪽의 미닫이 디스플레이를 이쪽 저쪽으로 밀며 그 유용함을 설 명하였다. 그리 많은 비용이 들어가지 않으면서, 몇 배의 실용성을 만들어내는 훌륭한 아이디어인 것 같다.

제품 구비는 기본이다 서사장의 MS Beauty Supply 에는 다른 뷰티 서플라이 스 토어에 비해 케미컬 제품의 비중이 크다고 한다. “뷰티 서 플라이 스토어의 기본은 케미컬 제품 입니다. 이것으로 인해 손님들의 발길을 끌 수 있으며, 나머지 제품들도 부 가적으로 판매를 한다고 봅니다. 또한, 저희 스토어 내에 서는 제품이 떨어지는 경우가 거의 없습니다” 라는 서사 장은 취급하고 있는 제품을 거의 떨어트리는 일이 없다고 한다. 물론, 도매상이 많이 있는 애틀랜타의 지역적 특성 도 많은 도움이 되고 있다고 한다. “일주일에 2 ~ 3 번은 도매상을 들러 제품을 구입합니다” 라는 서사장은, 스토 어를 방문한 고객들에게 편안한 쇼핑 환경을 만들어 주기 위한 기본은 제품의 구비라고 한다. 서사장은 “공간이 작 아서 다양한 제품을 구비하지는 못할지언정, 가지고 있는 제품이라도 떨어트리지 않으려고 많은 노력을 기울이고

있습니다. 요즘의 소비자들은 조금만 눈을 돌리면 주위에 뷰티 서플라이 스토어들이 즐비해 있기 때문에, 본인들이 필요로 하 는 제품이 없다면, 주저 없이 다른 스토어로 발길을 돌리기 쉽 습니다” 라고 한다.

낮은 가격이 전부는 아니다 여느 뷰티 서플라이 스토어들과 마찬가지로 흑인들이 대부분 의 고객층을 이루고 있는 MS Beauty Supply 의 주요 고객들 은, 조금 높은 수입을 가지고 있는 중상층이 대부분이라고 한 다. 꼭 그러한 이유에서는 아니지만, 주위에 많은 동 업종 스토 어가 있는데도 불구하고 가격을 낮춰서 판매하지 않는다고 한 다. 서사장은 “보시면 아시겠지만, 저희 스토어에는 세일 사인 이 하나도 붙어있지 않습니다. 가격을 낮춘다고 해서 모든 고 객들이 가격만보고 스토어를 들어온다고 할 수 없습니다” 라 며, “일년에 한 두 번 세일을 하기는 합니다. 그에 따라 판매량 이 조금 늘기는 하지만, 판매된 제품의 수익을 따져 본다면 순 수익이 그리 올라가는 것은 아닙니다” 라고 덧붙인다. 지역의 소비자들은 세일 여부에 상관없이 어차피 그 제품을 구입해야 하는 것이기 때문에, 가격을 낮춘다고 해서 2~3배 더 많이 판 매가 되는 것은 아니라고 한다. 따라서, 투자에 대한 수익 환 원률로 따질 때, 순이익이 더욱 높아진다고 보는 것은 어렵다 는 결론이 나온다고 한다. 오히려, 총 판매량은 늘어나지만, 수 익률을 따져보면 감소될 수도 있다는 것이다. 고객의 수가 늘 었다고 해서 경쟁자들의 고객을 빼앗아 왔다는 생각을 할 수도 없는 것이다. 모두 잘 알고 있겠지만, 요즘 고객들은 하나의 스 토어에 충성심을 가지고 꾸준히 방문하는 것이 아니라, 여러 개여 스토어들을 돌아가면서 제품을 구입하고 있는 현실이기 때문인 것이다. 요즘 뷰티 서플라이 스토어를 운영하는 오너들 은 많은 고객들이 가격에 대해 매우 민감하다고 입을 모아 얘 기하고 있다. 눈앞에서 다른 스토어와 가격을 비교하며 구입을 안하고 그냥 나가버리는 경우는 물론, 스마트폰을 사용하여 다 른 스토어와의 가격을 비교하며 애써 골라온 제품을 나두고 나 가버리는 경우도 있다고 한다. 사람의 뇌는 일상적인 것 보다 는 새로운 것, 그리고 자극적인 것을 더욱 잘 기억하는 경향이 있다. 물론, 그러한 형태의 고객들이 전혀 없다는 것은 아니지

만, 일반적인 손님들과 비교해 보면, 터무니 없이 적은 비율의 고객들이 부리는 횡포일 수도 있다. 하지만, 그것이 전부인 것처럼 인식하고 무조건 낮은 가격으 로만 승부를 하려는 것은 바람직한 일이 아닐 것이다.

적정한 수익은 우리의 자존심 서사장은 스토어를 방문한 고객이 가격을 가지고 다른 동 업종 스토어와 비교하 며 실랑이를 벌이려 하면, 차라리 다른 스토어에서 구매하라고 종용한다고 한 다. “스토어를 운영하는 것은 적정한 수익을 내기 위함입니다” 라는 서사장은, 무분별한 경쟁으로 인해 불필요하게 가격을 낮추다 보니 본인의 수익을 깎아먹 는 것이라 한다. 서사장이 그러한 말을 자신 있게 할 수 있는 것은 본인의 경험 에서 나온 것이라 한다. 예전에는 케미컬 제품들의 가격을 낮춰서 판매를 하였 던 적이 있다고 한다. 하지만, 매상에 비해 수익이 너무 적다고 느껴, 일년 전부 터 가격을 대폭 상승시켰다고 한다. 그런데도 불구하고 우려했던 거와는 달리, 판매 비율에 거의 변화가 없다고 한다. 물론, 가격에 대해 불만을 품고 그냥 돌 아가는 고객들도 있지만 이는 소수일 뿐이라고 한다. 현재, 경쟁이 치열한 다 른 스토어들은 이렇게 용감히(?) 가격을 올리는 것을 매우 위험한 일로 치부하 고 엄두도 내고 있질 않다. 하지만, 서사장처럼 과감히 시도해 보고, 그 추이를 보는 시도도 한번 해 봄직한 일이 아닐까 생각해 본다. 가보지 않은 길을 어떻게 알 수 있겠는가?

서사장의 경영 방식이 무모하다고 말하는 사람들도 있을 것이다. 하지만, 그보 다는 ‘용기’ 라는 단어를 쓰고 싶다. 과감한 결정 후, 실행으로 옮기고 뚝심으로 버티다 보니, 경쟁업체가 아닌, 고객들과의 가격 경쟁에서 승리 한 것이 아닐까 생각된다. 서사 장은 마지막으로 동 업종에 종사 하는 오너들에게, “경영은 자신 만의 스타일로 하는 것입니다. 하지만, 제품 판매 가격에 있어 서는 주위를 의식하기 보다는 자 신의 소신껏 경영을 하여 보다 많은 수익들을 내셨으면 좋겠습 니다” 라는 당부의 말을 남기고 인터뷰를 마쳤다.

Therapy Trends At Home Professionals OTC Consumers want the same professional makeup products as rock stars and fashion icons. Today’s makeup market offers shades and shimmers that are camera and runway ready. Consumers of all ages are exploring color from the deepest red lips to the palest monochromatic blushes. Makeup is always an accessory that changes with seasons. Throughout 2012 and into the following year, there will be more bold statements and risqué choices. Against The Grain “Brain Storming” How are you managing your marketing and promotions of your beauty or barber supply? Is it possible that you are not reaching your target audience? 지난 7월 15일, 많은 뷰티인들의 관심과 우려 속에서 NBSDA 중앙 협회의 제 5차 트레이드 쇼가뉴저지에 위치한 Meadowlands Center에서 개최되었다. 예전과 같이 많은 케미컬, 잡화업체 그리고 헤어 업체가 참가한 가운데 열린 이날의 쇼는, 사실 많은 사람들이 쇼가 개최되기 전 성공여부에 대한 우려를 가지고 있었다. 이는 쇼 개최 일을 한달 반 정도 남겨놓고, 몇몇 헤어 수입 도매업체로부터 불참 통보를 받았기 때문이었다. 협회가 다방면으로 노력하며 이들의 참여를 종용하였지만, 결과는 ‘불참’ 으로 확정이 되었기 때문이었다. 이에 협회는 급히 부스를 줄이는 등, 많은 어려움을 겪었다. 하지만, 중앙 협회는 각 지역협회 및 업계에 단결을 호소 하였고, 이러한 노력은 쇼 당일 날 그 빛을 발하였다. 예년에 비해 부스나 참가자는 줄었지만, 우려했던 것만큼 엄청난 사태는 벌어지지 않았다. 협회 측의 잠정 집계로 1,500 여명이 참석한 이번 쇼는, 참석자들과 참가업체들의 보다 적극적인 노력으로 사람들의 우려를 일시에

잠재웠다. 사람들이 많이 모이는 오후 1 ~ 2시 사이에는, 예전의 모습과 비교하여 손색이 없을 정도였다. “조금 걱정을 하긴 했었는데, 그래도 많은 사람들이 참가하여 오히려 협회의 단결력을 다시 한번 확인할 수 있는 계기가 된 것 같습니다” 라는 협회 관계자는 북적거리는 쇼장의 분위기에 안도의 숨을 쉬는 모습을 보였다.

9시에 테이프 커팅을 시작으로 막을 연 쇼는, 300여개의 부스가 참여했으며, 700여개의 호텔방이 예약되는 등, 뷰티 업계 최대 쇼로서의 면모를 지켜나갔다. 이미 몇 해를 거듭하며 익숙한 진행을 선보인 행사위원들과 참가자들은 성숙한 쇼장 분위기를 연출 하는데 부족함이 없었다. 쇼 막바지에 진행된 서울 왕복 비행기표 추첨에 앞서, 남진 특별 공연을 관람하기 위한 사람들을 위해 간단한 김밥 도시락이 준비 되었고, 이를 나누어 먹은 참가자들은 상품 추첨이 끝난 후, 협회에서 마련한 셔틀 버스를 타고 공연장으로 향하였다. 예정보다 조금 늦은 시간인 8시에 시작된 남진 특별 공연은 한국의 향수를 불러 일으키며, 관람자들의 커다란 호응을 얻었다. 남진의 공연을 끝으로 행사일정을 모두 마친 주부호 총회장은, “어려울 때 일수록 도움을 주신 여러 업체들과 각 협회장들에게 더욱 감사함을 느낍니다” 라며 감사함을 전하였다.

탈모에 관한 5가지 오해

1. 대머리는 남성 전유물? 여성 난소서도 남 성호르몬 분비 의학적으로 탈모는 남성호르몬을 일컫는 안 드로겐에 의해 생긴다. 따라서 남성에게만 대 머리가 있다고 생각하기 쉽다. 그러나 안드로 겐은 남성뿐 아니라 여성의 난소와 부신에서 도 분비되며 남성의 혈중 농도와 비교해 그 양이 절반 정도에 이른다. 따라서 여성에서도 유전성 안드로겐 탈모증이 생길 수 있지만 그 양상이 남성과 다를 뿐이다. 남성의 경우 앞 머리 혹은 정수리 쪽에서부터 탈모가 시작되 는 반면, 여성의 경우 머리 중심부 쪽에서 탈 모가 시작된다.

2. 대머리는 정력 세다? DHT에 민감…정력

수록 더 높아진다. 남성보다는 여성의 운동 부족 비율이 더 높았고, 13~15살의 청소년 의 경우 5분의 4가 운동부족 상태로 나타나 는 등 나이가 어릴수록 운동부족 현상은 더 심각했다. 운동부족은 관상동맥 심장병 발 병률을 10%, 당뇨병 발병률은 7%, 유방암 과 대장암 발병률은 10% 높인다. 지난 2008 년 각종 질병으로 사망한 5700만명중 운동 부족이 원인이 된 사망건수는 10%에 육박 했다. 흡연이나 비만으로 인한 사망건수와 비슷한 수치다. 학술적으로 운동부족은 걷 기나 정원 가꾸기 등 가벼운 신체활동을 30 분 이상씩 일주일에 다섯차례 이상, 또는 격 렬한 운동을 20분 이상씩 일주일에 3차례

과는 무관 남성형 탈모는 남성호르몬으로 인해 유발되 는 만큼 ‘대머리는 정력이 세다’고 오해하기 쉽다. 실제 거세한 남성(내시)에게선 대머리 증세가 나타나지 않는다. 그러나 남성호르몬 은 남성형 탈모의 필수조건이지 충분조건은 아니다. 탈모를 유발하는 직접적인 원인은 디 하이드로테스토스테론(DHT)이라는 호르몬 인데, 남성호르몬인 안드로겐으로부터 만들 어진다. 남성형 탈모는 DHT에 대해 유전적으 로 민감하게 반응하는 사람에게서만 생긴다.

3. 탈모는 아버지 탓? 父母 모두 유전… 8촌 까지 영향 ‘탈모는 아버지 쪽으로 한 대 걸러서 유전된 다’는 속설이 있다. 그러나 최근 보고된 바에 따르면 탈모는 부모 양쪽 모두에서 유전될 수 있다. 미국 오하이오 라이트주립대 의학부의 캐머런 첨리 교수는 탈모가 어머니와 아버지 쪽 모두에게서 유전될 수 있고, 부모뿐 아니 라 양가 친척 중 8촌까지도 유전이 가능하다 는 연구 결과를 보고한 바 있다. 독일 본대학 의 마르쿠스 노텐 박사는 어머니 쪽 유전이 남성형 탈모 발생에 더 중요하다는 주장을 미 국 인간유전학 저널에 발표한 바 있다.

이상 하지 않는 상태를 뜻한다. <아에프페 >(AFP) 통신은 연구를 주도한 페드루 알라 우가 “곧 2012년 올림픽이 열려 전세계 엘 리트들의 스포츠와 신체활동이 엄청난 관심 을 끌 것”이지만 “이를 지켜보는 대부분의 사람은 운동부족에 시달리고 있다”고 꼬집 었다고 전했다. 논문은 운동부족 현상이 개 선될수록 질병으로 인한 사망도 크게 줄어 들 것이라며 관계당국이 운동부족에 대해 ‘ 유행병’ 수준으로 대처해야 한다고 강조했 다. 인도를 좀 더 걷기 편하게 만들거나 자 전거도로 확충, 학교에서의 체육교육 강화, 공공체육시설 확대 등을 그 방법으로 제시 했다.

4. 치료제 먹으면 성욕 감퇴? 100명중 3명만 性관련 부작용 많은 탈모 남성들이 치료에 앞서 성기능 장애 를 걱정한다. 이는 남성형 탈모의 치료제인 프로페시아를 두고 나온 말인 듯하다. 프로 페시아는 현재 유일하게 나와 있는 경구용 남 성형 탈모 치료제로 탈모의 근본 원인인 DHT 의 생성을 막아 탈모를 치료한다. 이 약은 임 상시험에서 미미하긴 하지만 성욕 감퇴 같은 성기능 관련 부작용이 있는 것으로 보고됐다. 그러나 약을 복용하다가 부작용 때문에 중단 한 경우는 100명 중 3명 정도에 불과했다.

5. 머리빗으로 두드리면 효과? 혈액순환 돕 지만 역효과 더 커 빗으로 머리를 일정 횟수 두드리면 혈액 순환 이 잘돼 탈모를 예방하고 치료하는 데 도움 이 된다고 알려져 있다. 물론 혈액 순환을 도 와 모근이 활성화되면 탈모 예방이 가능하다 는 것 자체가 틀린 이야기는 아니다. 하지만 빗으로 두드려 두피를 자극하는 것은 두피를 더욱 두껍게 해 피부 호흡을 방해하고 피지의 분비를 촉진한다. 오히려 뾰족한 빗의 자극으 로 인해 파괴된 모세혈관과 모낭세포는 탈모 를 촉진한다.

과체중 신생아를 출산한 여성은 유방암 위험이 2배 이상 높다. 미국 텍사스 대학 의과대학 산부인과전문의 라데크 부코우스키(Radek Bukowski) 박사가 장기간에 걸쳐 실시된 2건의 연구논문 자료를 종합분석한 결과 몸무게가 가 장 무거운 신생아를 출산한 여성이 체중이 가장 가벼운 아기를 분만한 여성에 비해 유방암 발생률이 2.5배 높은 것으로 나타났다고 헬스데이 뉴스가 보도했다. 체중이 가장 무거운 아기를 출산한 여성은 또 신생아의 체중과 유방암 위험에 영향을 미칠 수 있는 호르몬 수치가 높을 가능성이 큰 것으로 밝혀졌다. 과체중 아기를 출산한 여 성이 유방암 위험이 높은 이유는 임신 중 유방암 위험을 높일 수 있는 특정 호르몬이 과다분비되는 것과 연관이 있을 것으로 부코우스키 박사는 추측했다. 산모의 출생체 중이나 산모의 유방암 위험인자는 이 결과와는 관련이 없었다고 그는 덧붙였다. 이 연구결과는 온라인 과학전문지 ‘공중과학도서관(PLoS One)’에 실렸다.

구글 글래스, 미래의 안경 구글이 현재 개발 중인 특수 안경을 자사 소셜 네트워크 서비스인 구글플러스를 통해 공개했다. 이날 구글 측은 구글플러스의 ‘프로젝트 글라스(Project Glass)’ 페이지에 이 안경을 소개하는 동 영상을 올려 그간 구글이 현실과 온라인 세계를 이어줄 새로운 개념의 안경을 만들고 있다는 소문 이 사실임을 밝혔다. 동영상에 따르면 이 안경은 인터넷 연결이 가능해 일기예보나 친구들의 메시 지를 스마트폰을 이용하지 않고 안경알을 통해 바로 볼 수 있다. 또 내장 마이크가 있어 음성 명령 을 인식, 수행할 수도 있다. 아울러 초소형 카메라도 탑재돼 목적지까지의 경로를 안경알에 띄워 주기도 한다. 이 특수 안경을 개발한 구글 프로젝트팀인 ‘구글X(Google X)’는 게시물에서 “기술 은 당신이 필요할 때 그곳에 있어야 하며 필요하지 않을 땐 잠시 비켜 있어야 한다”면서 “이런 기 술을 실현하기 위해 프로젝트 글라스가 시작됐다”고 밝혔다. 또 “이 기술을 통해 당신이 할 수 있 는 것들을 보여주고자 이 동영상을 제작했다”고 덧붙였다. 그러나 구글 측은 “네티즌들로부터 소 중한 조언을 얻기 위해 정보를 일부 공개한 것”이라면서 시장에 출시될 안경은 이날 공개된 것과는 다를 것이라고 강조했다. 그런데 이 안경 은 사생활 침해 우려도 낳고 있다. 다른 사람의 모습을 몰래 촬영할 수 있기 때문이다. 카메라와 달리 안경을 낀 것처럼 하고서 몰래 타인의 사 진이나 동영상을 찍는 것이 가능해서다. 뉴욕타임스(NYT)는 이 안경이 올해 말 250~600달러(28만~68만원)에 출시될 예정이라고 보도했다.

가주협회 가주 뷰티서플라이 협회(회장 배영수)는 지난 6월25일(월요일) 오전 10시부터 오후4시까지 Crenshaw Bl. 와 43가 에 있는 Universal 미 용학교(Universal College Of Beauty,Inc)에서 지역사회 생활보호 대상자 및 노인들을 위한 Outreach 행사를 가졌다. “Neighborhood Friendly Program” 의 이름으로 매년 한두차례 갖는 이행사는 미용 학교에서 선발된 10명의 학생이 가주 뷰티서플라이 협회의 후원으 로 커뮤니티내생활보호 대상자 및 형편이 어려운 이웃에게 무료로 헤어스타일을 해주는 행사이다. Business 의 기반인 지역사회 주민 들과 화합할 수 있는 기회가 되고, 미용학교 학생들에게는 그 동안 배운 미용기술을 지역주민들을 위해 봉 사하고 뷰티협회로 부터 장학금을 받을 수 있어서 좋은 평판을 듣고 있다. 이날 행사에는 가주 뷰티서플라 이 협회 이사들과 인근의 회원업소 업주가 함께 자원봉사자로 참가하여 준비해온 다과와 음료를 지역주민 들과 함께 나누며 친목을 나누었다. 이날 행사에는 ‘Moriah Forde’ 외 9명의 미용학교 학생이 약 40여명의 지역주민들에게 헤어스타일을 해주었다. 6시간동안 4명의 Hair Style을 해준 ’Brandy Breedlove’ 미용학 교 학생은 ‘어려운 이웃에게 그 동안 배운 미용기술로 최선을 다하여 스타일링을 해주었고 장학금까지 받 게 되어 너무 감사하다’ 라고 소감을 전했다.

뉴욕협회는 지난 7월 18일 Middle Island 컨트리 클럽에서 60여명이 참석한 가운데 하계미니 골프대회를 가졌다. 이번 골프대 회는 회원들간의 침목에 대한 의미도 있지만, 현재 병상에 있는 협회의 김기태 사무총장에게 조금이나마 도움을 주기 위한 골프 대회였다. 간단한 점심 식사 후 11시30분에 샷건 방식으로 시작된 이날 대회는 5시에 경기를 마치고, 클럽하우스에서 저녁식사 를 한 후 모든 행사일정을 마쳤다 August 2012 OTC Beauty Magazine

by Ken Klibaner Despite the challenging economic climate, Jinny Beauty Supply has exceeded all projections for the first half of 2012 on sales of Andis professional products. On June 26th, Eddie Jhin, the president of Jinny Beauty Supply, was honored for his company’s contributions to making the Andis Company’s 90th Anniversary successful.

Eddie Jhin and Dean Kim, Jinny’s brand manager for Andis products, met with Matt K. Andis, the President of Andis Company, Gary Stanczyk, the Vice-President, Karen Formico, Andis’ new Vice-President of Marketing, Harry Szczukowski, the National Sales Manager, Gary Nilo, the Southeast Manager, and Peter Carroll, the Southwest and Western Manager at the Andis headquarters in Sturtevant, WI. The Executive Vice-Presidents of Andis, Marcia Andis and Laura Andis who head the marketing

and finance departments, also greeted their distinguished guests.

After a factory tour, the group met to preview the many exciting new products slated to be introduced to the market in the second half of 2012. The Andis facility has expanded to include greater manufacturing space to keep up with the ever-increasing demand for Andis’ legendary professional clippers, trimmers, styling appliances and replacement blades.

At the end of an exciting meeting, Matt K. Andis surprised everyone by presenting Eddie Jhin with an actual 90th Anniversary Red Master Clipper plaque saluting Jinny United for their record purchases and contributions to making this year so special. The special day concluded with a delicious dinner at one of the area’s nicest restaurants.
