ctober has arrived! This leaves you with a few weeks to prepare for the holiday shopping season—but if you haven’t started yet, don’t worry! Stressing out will not help your situation.

While veteran storeowners might understand exactly what holiday preparation entails, for new storeowners, preparing for the holiday season may seem a bit overwhelming.

This issue features a bevy of information that you can use as you prepare your store for this busy time of year. Take time to brainstorm a few special holiday promotions and ways to make this stressful shopping season a little more convenient for your customers. You can learn all about the power of holiday promotions in the article starting on page 58.

To further prepare for the holiday season, consider streamlining a few operational processes to run your business more efficiently and effectively. One efficient business practice—accepting credit cards! If your store happens to be one that does not accept credit/debit cards, be forewarned that your sales may suffer this holiday season. While the economy is still not at its best, understand that you are still doing business in an increasingly cashless society and credit/ debit cards are a matter of convenience, security and in some cases, just the preferred method of purchase for your customers. Don’t fear credit cards, learn how and why you should embrace them in the article on page 44.

This could be a hard time of year financially and emotionally for some of your customers while others will face the season head-on and with complete excitement. Doing everything you can to give each customer a hassle-free experience in your store could do wonders for your bottom line.

“Here are my top five tips for making the most of holiday product opportunities: 1. Prime placement. Use high traffic and impulse sales locations to feature seasonal merchandise for maximum exposure and sales impact.

Display with spirit. Go for more than just a product on a shelf.

Dress up and display items with a festive holiday appeal and watch customers gravitate to and snap up these seasonal buys.

Price to move. Reasonable and fair markups are expected, but now is not the time to be margin greedy; price seasonal merchandise to move and clear. When the season passes it is better for the goods to be gone to make room for the next wave.

Spread some cheer. Create sales contests, spiffs and bonuses to provide incentive and to motivate staff to get behind the successful sell through of holiday merchandise.

Track your success. Keep good records of holiday sales volumes, best sellers and early out of stocks to improve your buying for next year and continue to build your bottom line. Information is power.

igs are one of the oldest fruits recognized by man and have been enjoyed for centuries. Does your business have what it takes to consistently win in today’s market?

How about keeping your customers loyal? If you think the price of your products or services is the reason you are attracting or not attracting and maintaining customers, think again. Today’s customers are savvy and want much more from their relationship with your store than just a low cost.

Customers are looking for relationships that deliver unique value. Yes, they want your products to solve their problems but they also seek a level of satisfaction that goes beyond the intrinsic value of what they paid for. By learning to tap into this deeper level of emotional satisfaction, your business with current customers will increase and you will uncover a steady stream of new customers.

Are Your Customers Loyal?

You may have asked your customers if they were satisfied with their purchase from your store. But the true measure is whether your customers are actually coming back. In an average customer poll you may find that eight or nine out of 10 customers were satisfied. That sounds great. But studies show that only four or five purchase from you again. Why? Because rational satisfaction—meaning they were not displeased, the product worked, etc.—is only part of the equation.

Customers who purchase again are emotionally satisfied. Moreover, emotionally satisfied customers will also recommend your product or service to others.

The bottom line on measuring loyalty: (1) How many of your customers intend to purchase again, and (2) how many of your customers would endorse your company to others?

Creating Exceptional Value

Exceptional value is created when your customer perceives your product or service to be worth more to them than the price they pay.

There are two components in any strategy for creating exceptional value with customer. The first is how well you’re communicating the unique value of your products and services as compared to alternative solutions in the marketplace. This is important and likely to result in a high rational satisfaction. However, it takes emotional satisfaction to develop a loyal customer. The second factor—building deeper, trustbased relationships—is the key to emotionally satisfied customers.

This happens when your employees show your store understands a customer’s needs, delivers more than is expected, and helps them achieve their goals.

Exceptional value stems from exceptional employees. Your people are the “secret sauce” in your store’s ability to deliver on its value promise. You have to hire and retain the right people to make it work.

These employees are those who do not need management mandates to engage customers and adhere to company values. These employees are your customer’s problem solvers. They provide the discretionary effort and intellectual capital that can take your customers from satisfied to loyal. And, studies have shown that an increase of only 5 percent in customer loyalty can add from 25 percent to more than 100 percent to your bottom line!

Tapping the Emotional Fountain

Developing emotionally satisfied customers who enjoy extrinsic value (beyond functional benefits) might seem like a pie in the sky ideal but there are many world examples. Think about a Rolex watch and what you feel when you see one worn. Any watch can give you the time. But they aren’t a Rolex. What captivates us about a Rolex isn’t its function, it’s the prestige. A Rolex suggests more than your need to tell the time. It says that you appreciate the finer things.

It shows that you have earned enough success to purchase one. It means you are knowledgeable about the value of the craftsmanship and precision it represents. That is the connection you should seek to develop with your customers. You want to deliver more value than the functional benefits inherent in your product or service. You want your customers to experience the extrinsic value you bring to the relationship by being emotionally engaged throughout the buying process.

It Pays to Be Ethical

A recent USA Today poll revealed that 72 percent of people will pay more to use the services and products of a company they perceive to be ethical. An easy example of this for consumer products is the higher prices that consumers pay at eco-friendly stores like Whole Foods. For service-based businesses, think of the movement of customers away from the megabanks who charged hidden fees and left customers navigating though a labyrinth of automated phone systems to credit unions and community banks where a real person answers the phone with a sincere interest in your situation.

These are examples of how the perception of ethical business practices can make a difference. It reflects the impact of emotionally satisfied customers. People feel better about themselves when they believe they are dealing with an organization that cares about “doing the right thing.”

By optimizing the key performance drivers of value creation, you can successfully tap the emotional bonds of your customer relationships. This takes the right people, the right process, the right leadership, and the right commitment. The investment your store makes in enabling and aligning your team with the skills, attitudes, beliefs and values that develop loyal customers will enrich your core business and provide new opportunities to gain customers and market share. Stay engaged and ethical in your customer relationships and you will transform your business.

lack magazines have come a long way since Chicagobased John Johnson decided that it was time for African-Americans to have their own national glossy four-color publication in the 1940s. He noted that general market broadsheet magazines like Life and Look did not cover the lives and culture of the black community. As president/ CEO of Johnson Publishing Company (JPC), Mr. Johnson founded Ebony magazine, and seeing its success in the black community, went on to found the news digest, JET magazine several years later. Later, in the 80s I was privileged to work for Mr. Johnson as vice president/ general manager of JPC’s Beauty Division. According to Johnson Publishing information, today Ebony and JET circulate the globe with a combined readership of over a billion. In America, magazine racks are full of publications that have content uniquely targeted to black Americans. Upscale magazine, published by the Bronner Brothers hair company, joins its other family business enterprises including the Bronner Brothers Beauty Show, film production, publishing and religious outreach. Essence magazine, now wholly a subsidiary of Time-Warner Inc., one of the oldest and most well-known publications for black women, celebrates its 40th year, as does Black Enterprise magazine, known for its yearly list of the Top 50 black businesses in

the U.S. Celebrating its 26th year is Sophisticates Black Hair Styles and Care Guide. Hype Hair has joined the hair magazine category, while Sister 2 Sister is a favorite for those seeking celebrity news. Heart & Soul magazine emphasizes fitness and health. American Legacy carries unique African-American history and cultural content.

A broad range of topics are covered in these publications from wedding photos in Jet magazine to getting on board First Lady Michelle Obama’s fitness campaign, “Moving to Win: The Fight Against Fat” in Heart & Soul magazine. Beauty departments are key assets as beauty editors discuss fashion along with skin care, hair care, makeup and cosmetics uniquely formulated for black men and women. Planning correctly is more difficult than it seems. Business Tips don’t enjoy the same privilege. It is critical that you work with your vendors in advance to make sure your inventory is stocked with products that hold the greatest sales potential.

You’ll need to work out order quantities and staggered delivery dates. If your vendors cannot supply what you need when you need it, you should begin looking for other sources.

Once you have agreed upon a delivery plan with your vendors, manage their progress carefully. During the year, you may be able to absorb a late delivery of a product. But, the holiday season is different. There is little room for error.

If your vendors cannot deliver best-selling items on time or cannot deliver the quantities agreed upon, your gross sales and net profits will take a hit. And during the busiest time of year for small retailers, that can have a major impact on your annual revenue.

The Christmas season is several weeks away. But, take the time to review your end-of-year strategy today. For specialty retailers who are prepared, the increase in sales will pave the way for a smooth New Year.

or decades, engineers have drawn a cloud to depict a network (such as the Internet) whose inner workings were unknown to them. From there, cloud computing evolved as a term to describe free or subscription-based services delivered in real time over the Internet.

Thanks to new technologies, computing power can be accessed anywhere, anytime. All you need is an Internet connection and any number of devices—phones, printers, cash registers, computers, etc. While there have always been some services available in this manner—payroll and credit card processing are good examples—now, there are too many business services available online to count and they’re growing by the day. With the ability to access the Internet anywhere in the world, we now have computing power that follows us wherever we want.

Cloud Computing, also known as “Software as a Service” (SaaS), is a great antidote to the recession, because it saves you money, requires less set-up time and doesn’t involve substantial training to use the services. Many services are free or structured so you don’t start paying for them until you need more extensive features. Office software: Microsoft has just released a free version of its popular (and very expensive) Office software on the Web. Called Microsoft Office Web Apps, it is an advertising-supported service that offers Word, Excel and PowerPoint. They don’t have all the features of the PC versions, but the price is right!

Phone and video conferencing: Skype is popular for its free video chats as well as for the low-cost calls to landline and cell phones that it makes possible. You can use Skype for team meetings, product knowledge presentations or to talk to suppliers from around the world. Though Skype call quality varies, the service allows easy and open communication between team members, despite their being geographically dispersed.

Credit card processing: Never miss a sale at trade shows or other remote events with one of the many applications available on the iPhone and other smartphones for remote credit card processing. You can capture signatures and immediately capture sales. These applications are available for as little as 99 cents. Using a smartphone or cell phone as a credit card has been in practice for years in Japan and South Korea.

POS systems: While most POS systems require specialized software installed at store level, companies are working on SaaS-based POS systems that keep barcodes up-to-date and eliminate the need to maintain your own system. The flexibility of a Cloud-based system will make it easier to adopt this important retail application.

The 2010 holiday shopper will be less “Scrooge” and more shrewd. Signs of recovery and false starts have lured the American shopper into careful and frugal spending behavior. Marketing and retail strategies for OTC stores must address this new consumer.

OTCs should consider strategies for value creation, customer retention, relationship programs and service.

Most consumers have experienced changes over the last

few years that have altered their personal lifestyle. The severity of the economic crisis has prompted consumers to rethink the way they act, shop spend and save. Ninety percent of U.S. consumers will return to traditional spending patterns by choice or by necessity. In previous downturns, it was easy to predict who would spend. Affluent demographics remained steady as less fortunate populations cut back on spending. Today’s recession hits across all socioeconomic sectors.

Modest holiday predictions will help OTCs welcome and prepare for unique spending trends.

Tidings of a Sharper Shopper

Since consumers have been practicing frugality for several holiday seasons they have become value seekers, not price-driven elves. These shoppers are multichannel shoppers who compare merchandise and pricing for all their shopping needs. OTC outlets will be attracting a 76

As you begin to see department stores become coupon outlets, this should suggest a trend catering to value and offering basic good pricing over high margin merchandise—not necessarily cheaper merchandise. Industry expert, Russ Handler of SMS, Inc. stated, “Loss leaders are a tough sell because it could significantly cut into profits. You want to bring customers in the door, but if you do it at the cost of your profit margin, then all you’ve done is move a lot of product with little to show for it.”

The relationship between how much consumers are willing to pay and their perception of the value they are receiving has been challenged by the long term decline in the economy. The gift of a shrewd shopper will last beyond the holiday season of 2010.

Holiday Season Starts Earlier, Ends Never

Holiday spending is a personal choice. Some consumers traditionally go overboard. Others may participate in modest holiday sprees.

These same holiday shoppers who are in the throes of decision-making will make a decision about a particular OTC store based on brands, relationship or price. Know your consumer base and why your OTC is the destination of choice.

Layaway is back—there will be less credit card usage as consumers attempt to decrease balances. Allowing consumers to delay or spread out payment can dramatically increase their willingness to buy. Consumers are shrewdly planning to get the biggest bang for their holiday buck by planning ahead. OTC deals must make the cost of holiday shopping less painful.

Blessings of Value Analysis

In a recent survey, it was discovered that an average of 18 percent of consumers will buy lower priced brands. Of those who switched to cheaper brands, half reported that the brands performed better than expected. Those who switched believed that they no longer preferred higher priced products or that higher pricing was not worth the money. In a recession, consumers become more prone to shop for value by destination. They become less willing to pay more since they require value and price to be of equal importance. If they are equal, they will justify buying and gifting items of lower price but equal value.

Many retailers may recall that after previous recessions, consumers returned to lavish spending behaviors. The global collapse of the economy may have struck a nerve. Always be careful. Be a Scrooge. Seek value and become a shrewd shopper.

Joy to the World of Efficient Outreach

Since consumers are influenced from so many touch points, OTC dealers need to take every opportunity to coax a purchase decision.

Advertising, sponsorships and promotions are being replaced by Web sites, social marketing and online mailings. Efficiency, effectiveness and relationship-building are the key reasons for reprioritizing consumer outreach. Non-traditional communication vehicles such as the Internet, social marketing and mobile devices are gaining scale and efficiency. Whatever choices made should tie into in-store activity to reinforce the message and secure a purchase decision.

Electronic shopping reinforces the choice of store destination. The purchase intent is created online then the consumer will seek the best store to make the purchase. With fewer dollars available for trial and error, bloggers and social media influencers help consumers try products before they buy. This is critical of higher priced items or new items and new chemistries like kits, colorants or appliances. Get connected for the holidays. Improve your database outreach by starting a social media connection or portal that can drive consumers to purchase from your store whether onsite or online.

Harmony and Peace to All

Your new, sharper, shopper is in search of social harmony.

Consumers reprioritize their awareness of the bitter economic and social plague surrounding the nation. This will drive them to spend more time with loved ones. Quality time and relevant experiences become important. It will help consumers to justify spending and gifting in a down holiday season. Consumers will also focus on spa, sports and spirituality when making health and beauty purchases.

Mary Lee Joshua, vice president of M3 Cosmetics Labs, advised, “We need to think outside of the box. Think gift sets. Offer gift sets by merchandising select styling and maintenance tools with everyday, essential hair care products. This way, the consumer will be able to create fun gift sets for a great price, seeing a value added benefit.”

Remember, many channel switchers will be perusing the OTC for luxury and value at a price. Use department store purchasewith-purchase or gift-with-purchase tactics to enhance the purchase decision. Joshua added, “The OTC will be able to bring some variety into their stores, while attracting a larger consumer base.”

You may have noticed that most of your shoppers are wired with phones, mobile entertainment devices, games, video and music. They are acquiring electronic toys for individual and group entertainment. Holiday promotions might include entertainment accessories that appeal to this trend. Think about gift cards and other profitable streams of income.

Rejoice!

It’s been “bah humbug” for the last two holiday seasons. Yet consumers are adapting and getting accustomed to value at any price.

The seasoned shopper will deck the halls through a well-planned shopping spree. This should yield a merry bonus for OTCs beyond the holidays.

World Eye, LLC. Sixty years of experience in the personal care and beauty industries sits between Robert Felipe and Robert Schwartz. Founding partners of the company World Eye, Felipe and Schwartz have focused their business on creating high quality products with lots of “TLC”—that’s a blend of tourmaline, lava and ceramic unique to their tools. OTC Beauty Magazine had an opportunity ask the two about their company, doing business in the OTC industry and their flagship brands: Lava Tech and Lava Flo. OTC Beauty Magazine (OTC): Would each of you please tell us a little bit about your role with World Eye? Robert Felipe (RF): I am one of the two founding partners primarily focused on marketing and the creative direction of the company. This includes branding, packaging, product design and development, advertising among other responsibilities.

Robert Schwartz (RS): I am the other founding partner primarily focused on sales and operations of the company. This includes direct customer interaction on placement and building our brands in the market. My other responsibility is pulling together our operational side of the business to make sure that this function is seamless to our customers.

OTC: What is your background as it pertains to the beauty business?

RF: I have 30 years of experience in the small appliance and personal care field. My introduction to the beauty business was with Windmere Corporation. When I joined them they also owned Saveway Beauty Supply and Belson Products. They eventually grew into Applica consumer products and licensed the Black&Decker brand for small electrics. I started as a graphic designer and quickly grew to vice president of marketing and creative services. After 25 years I left Applica to pursue the dream of building a business and developing my own brands. We started with the development of Lava Tech and followed that with Lava Flo which are the two flagship brands.

RS: My career started 30 years ago in the small appliance and personal care industry with Windmere Corporation. After growing up in the beauty business, I took a vice president position with Salton, Inc., where my responsibilities included sales and marketing. Salton was in the small appliance business and one of our key brand launches was the iconic George Foreman Grill. When a hedge fund bought and merged Applica and Salton, Inc., I handled sales and marketing integration before Robert Felipe and I joined to form World Eye, LLC (WE).

OTC: Where are your offices located and how is the company structured?

WE: We have two U.S. office locations—Highland Park, Ill. and Miami Lakes, Fla.—that are responsible for the day-to-day operations of the company. We also have partners with offices in Hong Kong and in 82

Lava Tech and Lava Flo benefit from our high end professional salon business by capitalizing on trends and the new tools that are needed to create unique styles on the fashion runways.

WE: The bonnet dryers continue to be one of our most popular categories as we continue to focus on their quality, value and features.

The other innovative staple is our patent pending Root Control product.

This item is specifically marketed to the multicultural consumer and serves a direct need for straightening hair from the root. No other tool gets right to the scalp and performs the magic that Root Control does.

Consumer research tells us that our product offers a larger hood design that allows consumers to dry their hair with a full set of rollers under the hood. The other key component is a sturdier design with extremely low defectives, assuring consumers years of satisfaction and performance at a great value.

OTC: With so many different lines of tools available to the consumer market, how do you make Lava Tech and Lava Flo stand out? What are the points of difference?

OTC: What is the newest item available in the Lava Tech product line? How is this item different from others that you’ve released?

OTC: What changes have you noticed in your category as the economy has changed over the last couple of years?

WE: The biggest change we have noticed is in the lack of product quality and value to the multicultural consumer. Some manufacturers are resorting to lowering quality and materials in order to reduce costs resulting in inferior products. These consumers are demanding core products that perform up to their expectations at the best price; which is what the Lava brands stand for.

OTC: How do you know when the time is right to add a new product or packaging design to the Lava lines?

WE: We have a cohesive branding approach for both Lava Tech and Lava Flo. We keep them both very consistent, but always strive for ways to improve and connect with the consumer. Our new product approach is driven from two facets: One, in working the professional markets and seeing the new trends that are continuously evolving. Two, this facet is driven by our outstanding engineering and product development team. Here we generate ideas and bring them to reality by reverse engineering these concepts into viable product solutions.

OTC: From a storeowner’s perspective, what do you feel is the easiest aspect of doing business with World Eye? WE: The decisions are made directly by us. So when the storeowner is talking to either of us, they can expect immediate resolution. We are personally involved with all aspects of our business and stand behind our product quality. If they have any concerns, it becomes our issue and it gets solved.

WE: All of our brands have their own dedicated Web site. These sites are there to educate the consumer or storeowners about our products. We constantly find blogs on the Internet talking about how fantastic the Lava products are.

OTC: Please explain to our readers the benefits of carrying the Lava Tech and Lava Flo products in their stores.

WE: The benefits of Lava Tech are core products at great value to your customers. [Customers] will find each product backed by quality that exceeds their expectations. With the Lava Flo mix of products come innovation, design, and the ability to create new, fashionable styles with quality products. OTC: What do you feel is the biggest challenge that World Eye faces doing business in the beauty industry today?

간은 사회적 동물이라 더불어 살아가야 하지만 그 안에서의 경쟁 또한 치열하다. 이 경쟁의 치열 함을 나타내는 대표적 사자성어인 약 육강식이란 말을 다들 한번쯤 들어봤 을 것이다. 약육강식이란 말 그대로 약자의 살을 강자가 먹는다는 뜻으로, 강한 것이 약한 것을 차지한다는 의미 를 가지고 있다. 사실 동물사회에서 나 쓰이는 좀 과격한 표현이지만, 현 시대의 과도한 경쟁을 조금 격하게 표 현한 말로, 많은 사람들이 공감하는 터라 널리 사용되고 있다. 하지만 사 람사회가 동물사회와 다른 점은 꼭 남 을 죽여야만 내가 살아 남을 수 있는 것이 아니라, 더불어 살아 가면서도 충분히 자신의 행복을 누릴 수 있는 것이다. 각설하고, 이번에 OTC 뷰티 매거진에서 인터뷰를 한 스토어는 조 지아 주 어거스타에 위치한 King’s Beauty Supply의 변용진, 변영화 사 장부부인데, 이들은 만연해진 동 업 종간의 치열한 경쟁 보다는 자신들만 의 경영 방식을 구축해 자신들만의 성 공을 이뤄가고 있는 사람들이다. 달관 했다기 보다는 주관이 뚜렷한 그들의 경영 철학을 엿보도록 해보자.

성공 요소 변용진사장은 1985년에 가족 이민으로 도미하여 현재 미국에서 25년째 생활하 고 있다. 미군에 3년간 근무한 후 LA에 서 평범한 직장생활을 해오던 차, 자신 의 비즈니스를 하기 위해 먼 조지아 주 의 어거스타에 둥지를 틀게 되었다. “처 남이 뷰티 서플라이를 10년 넘게 운영 하고 있습니다. 그래서 처남의 권유로 뷰티 서플라이 스토어를 시작하게 되었 습니다” 라는 변 사장은 성실함 하나만 믿고 생전 처음 해보는 스토어 운영에 뛰어들게 되었다고 한다. 현재의 스토어는 4300sq ft 규모이며 2006년에 패션 스토어였던 것을 현재 의 뷰티 서플라이 스토어로 변형 하였 90

다고 한다. 큰 길가에 위치하고 있어 시 작이 남들 보다는 수월했다는 변 사장 은 스토어 선정 시 로케이션이 가장 중 요한 요소라 한다. “아무래도 유동인구 가 많은 지역이 소매점을 하기에는 적 합한 것 같습니다” 라며 기존에 뷰티 서 플라이 스토어가 있던 자리가 아니기 때문에 알려지지 않은 상태에서도 사람 들의 눈에 많이 띄는 로케이션이 적지 않은 도움을 준 것 같다고 한다. 현재 스토어는 두 부부와 직원 한 명이 스토어 운영에 참여하고 있는데, “공간 은 넓지만 사람들이 몰리는 시간은 정 해져 있고, 그 시간만 지나면 저희 셋 이서도 충분 합니다” 라고 한다. 좀 억 척스럽게 보일 수도 있지만 사실 지역

내 다른 모든 동 업종 스토어들이 문을 열고 있는 일요일에는 과감하게 휴업을 하는, 여유를 좋아하는 사람들이다. “계 속 일만하다 보면 지치게 됩니다. 하루 정도의 휴식은 오히려 활력소가 됩니 다” 라며 게으른 것이 아님을 부연 하였 다. 스토어 내에서 변 사장의 부인인 변 영화씨는 고객 담당을 하고 있다고 한 다. “제 아내는 손님들의 이름은 물론, 그들이 사용하는 머리 색까지 다 파악 하고 있습니다” 라는 변 사장은 고객과 의 친분 또한 매우 중요한 성공 요소라 한다. 이 말에 이의를 제기할 사람은 아 무도 없을 것이라 생각된다.

Reflections 자신만의 방식으로 살아 남는 법 지역에는 동 업종 스토어가 6~7개 정 도 위치해 있는, 소위 말하는 경쟁이 좀 심한 지역에 속해있다. “처음엔 제 품이나 가격 등 많은 신경을 썼지만, 지금은 그렇지 않습니다” 라는 대답 을 하는 변 사장은 그 동안 쌓아온 자 신만의 노하우를 살짝 공개 하였다. 먼저 가격적인 면을 보면, 변 사장은 자신만의 세계를 확고히 구축하고 있 는 느낌을 주었다. “오픈 할 때부터 지금까지 저는 저만의 가격을 고수하 고 있습니다. 너무 높지도, 낮지도 않 은 적정 가격을 책정하여 주위에 동 요하지 않으며 지금까지 유지하고 있 습니다. 제가 가격을 너무 낮춰 버리 면 이는 당연히 다른 사람들에게 피 해를 주는 것입니다” 라는 변 사장은 처음에는 고객들의 말을 듣고 고민을 하기도 했지만, 자신의 신념을 밀고 나가 이제는 자리를 잡았다고 한다. “지금껏 비즈니스를 유지함은 물론, 지속적으로 조금씩 성장하는 것을 보 면 저의 ‘적정 가격’이 정말 적정했나 봅니다”. 요즘 같은 경쟁 속에서 내리 기 힘든 결정이었을 텐데, 변 사장은 자신을 믿고 실천하여 그에 대한 보 답을 받고 있는 것 같았다. 변 사장은 제품의 가격뿐만 아니라 취급하는 제품에 관해서도 본인만의 소신을 갖고 있었다. “남의 눈에 피

눈물을 내면서 까지 경쟁하고 싶은 생각은 추호도 없습니다”라는 변 사 장은, 뷰티 서플라이 스토어의 특성 도 모르던 초창기에 손님들이 스토어 에 들어와 자신들이 찾는 제품이 없 자 뒤도 안보고 나가버리는 손님들을 많이 봤다고 한다. “특히 뷰티 업계의 손님들이 브랜드에 대한 충성도가 높 은 것 같습니다” 라는 변 사장은 처음 에 고전하긴 했지만 곧 정신을 차리 고 자신만의 브랜드를 만들어 키워야 겠다는 생각을 했다고 한다. 뷰티 소 비자들의 브랜드 충성도가 다른 업종 에 비해 많이 높다는 것은 모두 알고 있는 사실이다. 하지만 역으로 생각 해 보면, 본인들이 쓰는 제품은 계속 사용해 오던 터라 잘 알고 익숙해 있 지만 다른 제품에 대한 지식은 그리 많지 않을 수 있다. 그저 남들이 하는 얘기만 들었을 뿐 자신이 직접 사용 해 보지 않았기 때문인 것이다. 또한, 제품들의 품질 차이가 그리 크지 않 다는 것을 알게 된 변 사장은 이점을 간과하지 않고 고객들을 적극적으로 설득 시키고 제품을 홍보하기 시작하 여, 이제는 많은 고객들이 스토어에 서 취급하는 제품의 ‘사용자’가 되었 다고 한다. 편법을 사용하여 같은 제 품으로 눈치를 보며 경쟁하는 것 보 단, 자신의 노력으로 브랜드의 성공 을 만들어낸 변 사장은 다시 한번 자 신만의 독특한 경영 방식으로 위기를 극복해낸 것이다.

먼저 내 스토어를 파악하 자 현재, 스토어에는 헤어가 70%, 케미 컬 20%, 그리고 잡화가 10%정도의 비율을 유지하고 있지만, 잡화는 그 비율을 조금 더 줄이고 싶다고 하는 데, 이는 뷰티 서플라이 스토어라는 본질을 지키고 싶어서 라고 한다. 신 상품 취급에 대해서는 고객들의 의 견에 귀를 기울이는 편이라고 한다. “지역 특성상 새로운 제품을 찾거나 많은 사용을 하지는 않습니다” 라며 그 이유를 설명 하였다. 현재 스토어 가 위치한 지역은 주민들의 수입이 높지 않은 동네다. 하지만 이상한 것 은, 스토어 안의 제품들은 중 고가 제품들이 잘 팔린다는 사실이다. 이 에 대해 변 사장은 “소비자들이 조 금 무리 해서라도 품질이 좋은 제품 을 구입하는 것은 그만큼 오랫동안 사용할 수 있는 장점 때문인 것 같습 니다. 저가 제품 2개를 사는 대신 고 가제품 1개를 구입하여 간격을 넓게 해서 착용하는 것 같습니다. 이는 소 비자들의 눈높이가 올라갔기 때문이 며, 거기서 나름대로의 방식을 찾아

Therapy Trends Shop, Pray, Enjoy Holiday 2010 Main Street USA will spend less this holiday season. Creme of Nature

n August 6, Creme of Nature held a special event at Two Urban Licks restaurant in Atlanta, Ga. Coinciding with the launch of their new Creme of Nature with Argan Oil line, the event—affectionately called a “Tweet Up”—was unique in that it was primarily attended by beauty bloggers and their readers. By reaching out specifically to bloggers, Creme of Nature embraced the reality that many consumers are turning to personal Internet accounts as well as nontraditional social media outlets for the latest product knowledge and information.

To introduce the new line, Creme of Nature invited three Atlanta-area bloggers to invite 10-15 of their followers to participate in a giveaway for tickets to the “Tweet Up.” They also invited a national beauty blogger from New York City that they knew would be in attendance at the Bronner Brothers show over the weekend to do the same. In addition to engaging the bloggers, Creme of Nature offered tickets to the “Tweet Up” via their Twitter and Facebook pages.

Two Urban Licks proved to be the perfect venue to create an upscale, yet personable and intimate environment for the nearly 30 attendees. The attendees were able to ask questions about the new line, photograph models and meet the Creme of Nature personnel behind the brand. Attendees also had an opportunity to mingle with each other another to discuss everything from beauty to hair care and other current industry happenings. At the conclusion of the event, every attendee was given a complimentary goodie bag that included full-sized samples of the new line of shine products.

Overall, the “Tweet Up” was a successful event and showed that even with the prevalence and accessibility of immediate information via social networking sites, consumers still appreciate face-to-face interaction.

- 머리 말리기 머리카락을 비비는 것은 나쁜 습관. 톡톡 두 드리듯이 물기를 제거하는 것이 좋다. 드라 이어의 뜨거운 바람은 단백질을 파괴하기 때문에 4인치 이상의 거리를 두고 말린다.

- 머리 빗기 젖은 상태에서 빗질을 하면 큐티클 층이 손 상될 수 있으므로 머리를 말린 다음 빗는다. 간격이 넓고 빗 끝이 둥근 빗을 사용하도록 하자. 머리 끝 부분, 엉킨 부분부터 빗어 내 린다. 머리를 빗을 때에는 귀 뒤에서 목덜미 의 뒤쪽 방향으로, 고개를 숙이고 목덜미에 서부터 앞을 향해 빗어준다. 머리카락 끝에 에센스를 발라준다. 빗을 자주 씻어 준다.

걷는 하위 25%가 가장 빨리 걷는 상위 25% 에 비해 사망 확률이 2.8배 높았다. 연구진 은 또 2만8천명을 대상으로 한 연구 5건을 토대로 의자에서 가장 늦게 일어나는 이들 이 빨리 일어나는 이들에 비해 사망 확률이 두 배 높다는 결론도 얻었다. 한 다리로 서 서 균형을 잡는 능력 역시 사망률 감소와 관 련이 있는 것으로 나타났지만, 각각의 연구 가 시행된 방법이 달라서 전반적인 사망률 감소 수치를 산출해 낼 수는 없었다고 연구 진은 밝혔다

뉴스거리 NBSDA 중앙 협회 NBSDA의 주부호 수석부회장은 현재 심각한 사안으로 떠오 르고 있는 콘택트렌즈의 불법 판매에 대한 경각심을 가져야 한다는 글을 협회 사이트에 게재 하였다. 현재 사우스 캐롤 라이나에 거주하는 15세 소년이 뷰티 서플라이에서 구입한 콘택트렌즈를 착용한 후 한쪽 눈 실명이라는 사태가 발생하 고 말았다. 이에 소년의 부모는 콘택트렌즈를 판매한 뷰티 서플라이 스토어를 상대로 소송을 제기할 것이라고 한다.

2005년부터 처방 없는 콘택트렌즈의 판매는 금지되어 있는 상태이고, 이를 불법 판매할 시에는 최고 $10,000 이상의 벌금이 부과될 수 있어 현재 콘택트렌즈를 취급하고 있는 전 국의 뷰티 서플라이 스토어들은 이 사안을 심각하게 생각해 봐야 할 필요가 있다.

In a recent election by the American Health and Beauty Aids Institute (AHBAI) Board of Directors, the current chairman, Clyde Hammond, Sr., president, Summit Laboratories, Inc., was elected to serve a fourth term as chairman of AHBAI.

This is the first time in AHBAI’s history that the chairman has been re-elected to serve four consecutive terms. “This speaks very highly of the leadership Mr. Hammond has provided the association during the past years,” said Geri Duncan Jones, executive director, AHBAI.

“I am honored to have been chosen to serve a fourth term as chairman of AHBAI,” said Hammond.

scientists, clearly demonstrate that UV nail lamps are safe when used as directed and that the media reports and the suggestions in the MacFarlane-Alonso report to the contrary are misleading.

“The health and safety of the public and beauty practitioners is of the utmost concern for the Professional Beauty Association and its Nail Manufacturers Council. By issuing this announcement, we hope the public will have more scientifically-based information and understand that UV nail lamps emit low levels of UV light and are safe when used as directed,” stated Steve Sleeper, executive director for the Professional Beauty Association.

Douglas Schoon of Schoon Scientific and one of the authors of the NMC report added, “The Lighting Sciences results also showed that the UV-A rays found in nail lamps were low and equal to spending approximately two minutes in the sun each day between appointments. These findings make clear that nail salon clients are more likely to be exposed to UV in day-to-day activities, such as taking a walk or driving a car, than by artificial nail services.”

Although not necessary, if nail customers are concerned with UV exposure, a small white cloth can be placed over the hands while using the nail lamp or sunscreen can be applied to the skin (not the nails).

Essie Supports Super Saturday 13 the Ovarian Cancer Research Fundraiser

The Ovarian Cancer Research Fund (OCRF) is the country’s leading not-for-profit organization dedicated to advancing research, raising awareness, and finding a cure for ovarian cancer.

The Professional Beauty Association (PBA), and its Nail Manufacturers Council (NMC), reported the results of a recent study finding that UV lamps used for curing acrylic and gel nail care products are safe when used as directed (Schoon, Bryson, McConnell 2010).

This study contradicts recent misleading and inaccurate Internet stories and media coverage suggesting such lamps may be unsafe. Further, the study also challenges a recent report that improperly compares nail lamps to full-body tanning beds, based on wattage, and suggests that UV-A exposure levels from UV nail lamps may be unsafe. (D.F. MacFarlane and C.A. Alonso 2009).

To investigate these matters, the NMC recently engaged Lighting Sciences, Inc. to test the level of UV-A and UV-B light emitted by UV nail lamps.

Lighting Sciences, a fully-equipped, independent scientific testing laboratory specializing in the development and testing of illumination devices, including those that emit UV light, was asked to use standard scientific protocols to test hand exposure from UV nail lamps and compare such exposure to natural sunlight exposure.
