Count on the Kids

아이들도 고객으로 생각하세요 B eauty products and children are two terms not typically associated with one another. The first often provokes images of makeup and hair styling products, while hearing the latter creates images of toys, playfulness and laughter. This month OTC Beauty Magazine urges you to not only make the connection between your store, the products you offer and children, but to strengthen the relationship between the three. After all, kids are your customers too.

Increasing business, ensuring shopper satisfaction and keeping the store up-to-date in regards to product offerings are three concerns that should weigh heavy on every store owner’s mind. These factors alone can cause significant strides in your establishment’s success if they are addressed correctly. Keep an eye out for articles on these topics as you flip through this issue.

There is also an entire category of products made especially for children that must not be overlooked or pushed to the wayside. Whether you are trying to attract the mother shopping for her kids or the little fashionista who wants to pick out her barrettes for herself, you must pay attention to how you market these goods. Texture is taking over! With more than 50 percent of African American women no longer chemically-relaxing their hair, and the multicultural community embracing their curly hair textures, the need for treatment and styling products designed to preserve and enhance one’s natural hair is at an all-time high.

Unlike straight hair, curls experience the challenge of evenly distributing the natural sebum from the scalp through the strands, to the ends of the hair. Brushing and combing would be the usual remedy for this problem. However, curls don’t care for brushing. Depending on thickness and texture, combs and brushes may be rendered useless. In situations where brushing is feasible, one runs the risk of ruining coils by flattening them out, causing frizz or destroying the unique curl pattern. Therefore, curly hair asks for the moisture that’s needed to manage, define, illuminate and style it from other sources. That is where we come in.

arrett Augustus Morgan was working in a sewing machine repair shop where he was attempting to invent a new lubricating liquid for the machine needle. He wiped his hands on a wool cloth and when he returned the next day, he found that the cloth was smooth where he had wiped his hand. The lubricating liquid had changed the texture of the wool.

Excited by the possibilities he experimented on a dog with curly textured hair and the same result was obtained.

Morgan eventually tried the lubricating liquid invention on his hair and dubbed it a “hair refining cream.” That was the first chemical hair straightener, and from then till now people of curly hair types have been using this cream to relax the curl pattern in their hair for it to be permanently straight.

Since then, chemical hair relaxers have come a long way.

There are more conditioners added to relaxers and they are less likely to burn the hair to a crisp because of scientific testing and experiments with other alkaline compounds that can relax the hair’s curl pattern. Let’s take a look at hair relaxers and what they contain.

Lye Relaxers

A lye relaxer consists of sodium hydroxide (also known as NaOH or lye) chemicals with a pH factor of 10 to 14. The higher up on the pH scale we go, the more alkaline is the product and the faster it will break down the hair bond. When mixed with other ingredients like petroleum jelly, emulsifiers, water and mineral oil, a creamy lotion is created. This creamy relaxer or lye cream when placed on the hair penetrates the hair’s protein structure and breaks down the hair bond; in the process it loosens the curl pattern of the hair. The sodium hydroxide content varies in different relaxer brands and they are labeled as mild or strong. Sodium Hydroxide is quite strong and produces a longer lasting effect than other relaxers. It makes hair straighter and smoother. However, it is such a strong product that it is the active ingredient in drain cleaners (now banned in several countries because of its potency). The damage potential of sodium hydroxide is really high so handlers of this chemical have to use it with care.

No-Lye

There are three main types of no-lye relaxers: potassium hydroxide (which operates on the same general principle as sodium hydroxide but with a weaker alkaline agent), lithium hydroxide and guanidine hydroxide. Guanidine hydroxide is a mixture of calcium hydroxide and guanidine carbonate. They are usually packaged separately and then mixed before application. Guanidine hydroxide is still a powerful chemical, however, its power is tempered somewhat by being a tad bit lower alkaline-wise than sodium.

Another no-lye relaxer is ammonium thioglycolate (perm salt), when applied gives the hair permanent waves. Perm salt is a chemical reducing agent, which weakens the hair’s cystine bonds and strips the natural oils even more thoroughly than the alkali hydroxide products. After this process the chemical has to be oxidized with hydrogen peroxide or sodium bromate. This should explain why permanent waves require moisturizing all the time and why getting a ‘perm’ involves using chemicals just the same as getting a ‘relaxer.’

A much weaker no-lye relaxer option is ammonium sulfite/ bisulfite. They are much weaker than other no-lye chemicals and work much slower than their chemical counterparts. They also have a significantly lower alkaline pH.

잿물 성분의 릴렉서 (Lye Relaxers) Lye Relaxer는 Ph(수소 이온 농도 지수)10 -14 정도의 화학물질인 수 산화 나트륨(흔히 NaOH나 양잿물로 알려진)으로 구성되어 있다. Should Children Relax? 아이들이 릴렉서(relaxer)를 사용해 야만 하는가?

t seems like an easy answer—of course, children should relax. They go to school, spend the day absorbing as much knowledge as they can and socializing with friends.

Undoubtedly they deserve a little downtime too. This is true, but this kind of relaxing is a little different than the beauty industry understanding of the word. In this sense the answer to the question, “Should children relax?” does not often come as easy.

Hair relaxing is often done permanently through the use of chemicals that straighten tightly curled hair and make it more manageable. This seems harmful enough, and actually convenient for parents of children who have hard-to-comb tresses, but some experts say that special attention should be paid to the risks.

Acknowledging the tender state of children’s hair, companies create multiple types of relaxers to appeal to an array of customers. Between the ages 5-10, it is said that kids show the maximum amount of hair growth. During this influential developmental stage, using harsh products could be detrimental to both the hair itself and the scalp, and the growth process could ultimately be hindered. Hair breakage, alopecia, and scalp irritation and burns, are some additional side effects that could result from relaxer use. If used carefully these dangers can be lessened, but it is important for customers to be aware that the possibility still remains.

Seeing these results as possibilities, children’s relaxers have been developed that promise to be milder and appropriate for young manes. These are known as no-lye relaxers and contain a less potent chemical that is less damaging and more suitable for the user. This provides comfort to parents and kids alike.

Despite the criticism children’s relaxers get, some experts claim that many treatments are performed without major problems. If users make sure to stay away from the scalp with chemicals and keep hair moisturized to fight breakage, the process should be an easy fix for stubborn hair. Parents may want 30

ndoubtedly there have been many times that consumers have walked into your store and asked, “How long is this product good for?”, “What is the life expectancy or this or that item?” or simply, “Should I refrigerate this product after opening?” If these questions seem familiar to you, then the answers should be ready at the tip of your tongue.

The year 2012 has pushed everyone into the fast lane of the information highway. How much of a product can I use, how long can I use it, and “Can I use it on me and my children?” are just some of the questions OTC owners and staff are asked daily. How about this concern: “This product is old and I want to return it for something else.” If you or your staff have been asked any of these questions, then take comfort that the answers should be able to be found on the product itself.

Take for instance the product lines from Sofn’free, for example the Gro Healthy Milk Protein & Olive Oil Strengthening Crème. When asked about product longevity, direct the consumer to the picture of the open jar on the label.

Clearly stamped on the label is “24 M” which simply means that once the jar is open it will be effective for use for 24 months. Simply by pointing out the printed info, the customer has their question answered.

From a manufacturer’s point of view, to make this simpler we have to make sure we provide stable ingredients so as to minimize separation. At Sofn’free we like to use clear bottles so that the consumer can see that the product he or she is buying is blended well and not separating, indicating aging or that the product has deteriorated. This is key for consumer confidence and in OTCs being able to stand behind product quality.

Some products come with a “use by” date, which is also an indication that use after that date will yield diminished results, and in some cases cause harm.

Shelf life for relaxers being highly effective is two years.

After that they lose stability as it relates to effectiveness. It is important to rotate relaxers so the oldest appear at the front of shelf, insuring consumer confidence.

Shampoos have a comparatively long shelf life – 1.5 to 2 years, depending on type. Detangling shampoos have a slightly shorter shelf life, whereas neutralizing shampoos are slightly longer. Manufacturers can easily predict the life span of a product and the batch code on the product itself gives information about when product was made. Aside from this, manufacturers are required to keep a retain sample of each product for reference in case any problems or questions arise about it from consumers.

Some indications that a product has outlived shelf life are product separation of oil and water, a foul fragrance, and viscosity issues.

OTC owners and staff should be particularly aware not to stack or store “natural products” in direct sunlight as this can cause rancidity and render product worthless. This is one of the reasons delicate oils like argans will be in amber bottles to protect them from light. If you are unsure about the shelf life of any product or batch code, it is always best to call the manufacturer.

샴푸는 제품 타입에 따라 조금씩 차이는 있지만 1.5-2 년 정도의 비교적 긴 제품 수명을 가진다. Detangling(엉킴 방지) 샴푸는 상대적으로 약간 짧은 수명을, neutralizing( 중화 작용) 샴푸는 좀 더 긴 수명을 가진다. 제조업체는 언제 생산된 것인지에 대해 제품 자체에 표기된 정보를 통해서 제품의 수명과 작업 코드를 쉽게 예측할 수 있다. 뿐만 아니라, 제조업체들은 소비자들로부터 어떠한 문제점이나 문의들이 발생할 경우에 참조할 수 있도록 각 제품의 샘플을 보유하고 있어야한다. 제품들이 실제 수명보다 오래 진열되는 경우, 제품을 구성하고 있는 오일 성분과 물이 분리되거나 좋지 않은 냄새가 나기도 하고, 액체의 점도에도 이상이 발생한다는 지적이 있다.

OTC 매장 사업자들과 직원들은 천연성분 제품의 경우 직사 광선에 노출되지 않도록 진열이나 보관에 특별히 주의를 기울여야한다. 천연 제품들이 직사 광선에 장시간 노출될 경우, 나쁜 냄새가 나거나 부패되어 사용 불가능한 제품이 될 수 있다.

Argan과 같은 섬세한 오일은 황갈색의 불투명한 용기에 담아서 빛으로부터 보호하는 것도 이런 이유 중 하나이다. 제품의 수명이나 제조 코드에 대해 확실하게 알지 못할 경우, 제조업체로 문의하는 것이 최선이다.

efore the early 1900s when Madam C.J. Walker manufactured and marketed hair products to grow, maintain and groom African-textured hair, elixirs and potions concocted in grandmothers’ kitchens provided remedies for softening harder-to-manage hair. It would not be until the early 1970’s that the term “detangler” took hold in the emerging ethnic hair products industry, used to market remedies to help make combing easier. The earliest detanglers, considered ground breaking innovations in the industry, were water-based, conditioning sprays and lotions, used by consumers to help “blow-out” afros and to soften hair for braiding and plaiting. Over the past 30 years, detanglers have been manufactured in a variety of deliveries including sprays, lotions, crèmes, puddings and foams, and are now used to satisfy a wider range of styling and maintenance needs.

In both the mainstream and ethnic marketplace, detanglers are key to the children’s segment. Currently in the ethnic industry, according to IRI, styling products account for an estimated 41 percent of children’s maintenance product sales. Since their inception, detanglers have become a styling necessity. No mother wants to groom her child’s hair and see hair come out in the comb. And, let’s not forget the poor child who sits with hunched shoulders pushing back tears while getting their hair combed – especially if the child has natural, coily or kinky hair. Detanglers have helped remedy these problems by preventing breakage and damage, and delivering the promise of manageability and “no more tears.” The best types are conditioning moisturizers that favor more natural, organic and botanical ingredients in lieu of harsh chemicals.

Her eye has become trained to look for key words and benefits that communicate gentleness and overall good hair health. Girls are always attracted to bright packaging and enjoy seeing models on labels, as they provide images the child can both relate and aspire to.

Seeing a pretty hairdo on a product label invariably prompts the reaction, “Mom…I want my hair like that!” In the ethnic industry, sprays continue to be popular, as they are the most user-friendly, create less build up, inexpensive and can be quickly dispensed during styling. However, detangling lotions typically provide greater conditioning and softening benefits, and they last longer on the hair than water-based sprays.

There will always be a need for detanglers, especially as many ethnic consumers make the choice to transition from chemically-treated to natural hair. Regardless of ethnicity or race, moisture and detangling are crucial to any hair type and texture. This leaves plenty of room for innovation with product types and easy-use delivery methods for detangling remedies.

In order to be competitive and meet the needs of the consumer, beauty supply retail stores should offer a variety of detangling products for children and adults, especially those that promote more natural ingredients.

n the first and second of this three part “Soul of the South” series we discussed the growing importance of the South for African-Americans, who in the past migrated north, but are now trickling back to their roots in a process call retromigration. But major black populations in the North still play a key role. We call these areas like New York, Chicago and St. Louis, “Up South.”

Manufacturers, marketers and retailers who want to reach black consumers should be aware of these areas where black culture thrives because the “cultural connection” can make all the difference in increased returns on investments (ROI). If you can appreciate someone’s cultural roots, you are no doubt aware of their unique hair and beauty care needs. You will become familiar with distributors who handle the appropriate products and you will be stocked with just the right commodities.

These urban northern cities are important, and so are their suburbs and surrounding communities. Not only have demographers tracked the return of the African-Americans to the South, but they have also noted their migration to the suburbs as income and education increase. In this article population statistics refer to MSAs or Metropolitan Statistical Areas where population concentrations are 750,000 or more as recorded by the U.S. Census Bureau. You will note that New York City and Newark, NJ have the same population numbers because they are close enough to be in the same MSA. We have included for each city some general tourist highlights and visitor spots that are of special interest to African-Americans. Four of these cities have mayors who are African-American.

According to the 2010 U.S. Census Bureau, Hispanics in the U.S. are the largest minority, counting for a mix of around 50 million from different Latin American countries. The Hispanic population increased 15.2 million between 2000 and 2010. During this last decade the Hispanic population grew by 43

According 2010 U.S. Census, more than 41 million people of the population are reported as being black or African American. The consumer trend among African Americans for beauty and hair products has pointed for many years towards chemical formulation with oil base products, although some are enriched with natural and organic ingredients.

Because of their hair texture, African Americans have typically been looking for relaxers, color, and hair maintenance products in stores. Now, even though that market segment stays strong without leaving the very large and profitable hair extensions market, the opportunity expands even more into a very interesting category that is natural styling hair care and maintenance products. From my personal point of view and experience, OTC stores should be taking advantage of this opportunity and focus on a multicultural product mix section to service not only the existing African American consumer market, but also the rapidly growing Hispanic market segment.

This is just a brief overview and general idea of the real and tremendous opportunity in the Hispanic market. Please keep in mind that there are many more specifics regarding this area.

Here are some facts according to U.S. Census that shows the opportunity that this Hispanic market approach could represent.

Retailers should look for additional ways and strategies to increase business and bring customers through the door.

1. Maintain SRP/MAP Pricing – Today, there are many manufacturers that have Suggested Retail Pricing (SRP) or Manufacturer Advertised Pricing (MAP) for their product lines.

This strategy was designed to help guarantee and maintain the profit margins for all that handle the goods. This practice can be a huge asset in maintaining one’s bottom line, and can make a difference in keeping a business afloat.

2. Capitalize on Brand Loyalty – Customers are very loyal to brands they believe in and that work for them. True brand loyalty exists when customers have a high regard and attitude toward a product, thus resulting in “repeat” sales directly or through word of mouth. Many times, a loyal customer will purchase a select brand even if a competitor brand is cheaper. Make sure you have visible the brands that your customers want. By enhancing your customers’ brand commitment and maintaining “fair,” not “discounted” prices on goods could have a dramatic effect on your own profitability.

Make a special effort to rotate and move things around so that at least it looks like you have new stock. If possible, utilize end caps and display areas for top selling items and new product where everyone can see them. Designate an area for the really old stuff and “on sale” items.

Remember to tell everyone that there is a sale area with great bargains. If an item is too old or defective, remove it from the shelf permanently! Keep your store clean and appealing. Dust and clean shelves frequently!

Rewards Programs that some large businesses have, but there’s no reason why a small retailer can’t have a Customer Rewards program too! It doesn’t have to be very elaborate or complicated. It can be a simple discount on a customer’s birthday or a system that earns rewards and discounts on merchandise. This will help build customer loyalty and repeat sales, which in turn, will help increase sales!

What about a Sales Incentive Program for your staff? Why not reward your employees for outstanding performances? Yes, it’s their job, but employees push when there is an added purpose.

Natural hair care is all the rage in the market place but one natural style truly defines the commitment to natural ethnic beauty and unique style—locs. Many people refer to the style as dreadlocks, but to have such an array of styles, lengths and variety as we do today, the term seems a little too limiting. Ethnic hair in its natural state is strong and beautiful and the use of quality products only enhances its rich brilliance. There is nothing to dread about that. So what makes the new stylish locs and which products do customers look for to really maintain the style? It is all simply natural, and moisture is the true key to success.

Locs have been worn since ancient times and many of the ingredients and practices to start are used to develop products today. To loc the hair is truly a process and given the misconceptions and limited quality products, the process can quickly turn into a self-defining journey.

Locs normally begin as twists and are secured with a holding agent. Over the years, bees wax has been used to secure the hair, but given the length of time

between shampoos, build-up is all too common. Many products have taken the same concept and produced naturally based products that eliminate the sticky build-up.

Jamaican Mango & Lime carries a Locking Creme Wax with the hold of beeswax and the soft conditioning effects of cream. For those that prefer a lighter formula, the Locking Gel is moisture based and sure to hold twists in place. This is a very important concern because a young child’s hair can be permanently altered in a negative way by this procedure. Feature Why is a black baby born with straight or wavy hair and a few months later it is kinky?

The answer to this is simple: the excessive amount of bonds in the cortex and medulla (more so than most other cultures) is partly the cause of kinky or curly hair, causing the hair to retract like a stretched rubber band when released. The cuticle layers back up on each other as a result of the excessive amount of bonds in the cortex and medulla, resulting in African-American hair having up to twice as many overlapping cuticle layers than Caucasian straight hair. This causes the cuticle scales (they are called scales because they resemble the overlapping scales of a fish), to stack tightly against each other and flair out. This is the reason for the kinky appearance of African-American hair.

Pressing, curling and flat ironing forces the flared cuticles flat against the hair shaft to create the appearance of being straight. When a black baby is born, the bonding in the cortex and medulla layer of the hair shaft has not yet been formed. Sometimes it takes up to a year and a half for the bonds to become apparent, thereby forming the hair’s permanent structure and texture. You cannot train a baby’s hair to stay baby hair.

What is a safe age to relax a child’s hair?

It is usually safe after the age of seven because a child hair does not mature until about that age, or at the same time their permanent teeth come in. At that time the hair will have developed its full cuticle, cortex and medulla structure. When an African-American baby is born, the hair is usually very soft and slightly wavy. This is because the bonds and other internal structures of the hair have not yet developed. Over a period of seven years the hair development is complete and strong enough to withstand the chemical change. However, the longer you postpone relaxing a child’s hair, the better it is for the hair and the child.

What to consider prior to doing a first-time relaxer on naturally wavy or slightly curly hair This type of hair, which is not really “kinky” will overcome the natural wave or curl when relaxed with sodium or “no lye” relaxer. However, the new growth will many times grow out curlier than it was before it was relaxed. When the scalp starts to burn from the relaxer, this is an indication that the relaxer has penetrated the scalp and is seeping down the follicle, to the papilla. The papilla reacts to this by drawing up into a tighter curve in an effort to resist this foreign matter. This new, tighter curve remains permanent, resulting in the new growth hair being curlier than it was previously.

Hair Term: The Papilla This is at the base or bottom of the hair shaft and serves as the seed and root of the hair. It is located deep in the scalp and serves to supply nutrients that it gains from blood flow derived from the papilla roots that dip into the blood stream. Due to heredity, the papilla has a shape that is straight or curvy. A straight papilla will produce straight hair and a 64

Relaxers that are designed for use on children are the no lye type instead of sodium. The reason is because the no lye relaxers are milder than the sodium ones and do not penetrate as deep into the hair.

However, they do have a tendency to revert a little, requiring new growth (retouch) sooner. Most professional cosmetologists do not use no lye relaxers for this reason.

이러한 현상 가운데 어떤 것도 대부분의 경우 선천적이거나 유전적인 것이 아니다. 아기들에게 잘해주고자 하는 사람들의 본의 아닌 의도에 의해 발생하는 것이다.

또한 곱슬머리는 평평한 모낭으로부터 자라는 평면적인 모발이다. 방금 설명했듯이 모발에 가하는 인위적인 손질들로 모낭이 더욱 평평해지면, 결과적으로는 있는 그대로 두었을 때보다 자라면서 더욱 심한 곱슬머리가 되는 것이다.

일반적인 헤어 관리나 손질은 문제가 되지 않는다. 그러나 원래 특성과 다른게 만들고자 억지로 손질을 해서는 안된다.

Many people who suffer this malady cannot remember ever having hair on the temple, so it is passed off as being hereditary and/or one of the traits of being black. Actually this situation is the result of having someone who unknowingly and with good intentions attempted to train the hair when the person was an infant.

As mentioned in the last segment explaining why a black baby is born with straight or wavy hair, this type of hair structure may not be comparable to that of the infant’s parents who may have extremely curly or kinky hair. Realizing this, the mother, big sister, babysitter, etc., may start to smooth the hair from the forehead back by tying it down with rubber bands, barrettes or tight braiding (which pulls the hair and roots out of the scalp permanently) or caking it with heavy oils in an attempt to train the hair to stay straight or wavy. This is a futile practice because it is impossible to train baby hair to stay baby hair. Once the cortex and medulla has matured, causing natural retention in the hair, it then causes the overlapping of the cuticle scales. The hair will for then and evermore maintain its natural curl or kinky pattern. There is an exception to this – when the hair is changed by procedures such as the use of as relaxers and rearrangers.

Manipulation of the hair as described above causes a great deal of the papilla (the seed and root of the hair shaft) to become permanently destroyed. It is destroyed by pulling and crushing due to the young, tender papilla being mashed between the scalp and skull by pressure applied during this futile training attempt, or being pulled out of the scalp. What results is permanent baldness in the temple area, high foreheads, thinning hair and bald spots that last a lifetime (This is also known as Tension Alopecia).

None of these conditions are natural or inherent for the most part. They were caused unintentionally by people who thought they were doing the right thing on behalf of the child.

Also, kinky hair is flat hair that grows from a somewhat flat follicle. By manipulation of the hair as just described you are rendering the follicle even flatter, resulting in even kinkier hair when it matures then it would have been if simply left alone.

Normal grooming and care is fine, but do not try to force it to be what it is not.

The name might not ring a bell when you first hear it, but Inspired Beauty Brands is the new name of Alleghany Pharmacal. When learning about this recent change in company focus, who better is there to speak with than a man whose role is considered to be “a hybrid of passion, vision and governance; a member of a uniquely committed team?” OTC Beauty Magazine could find no other, and the CEO himself, Sam Maniaci, shared his insight on what the transformation means for the company and beauty business.

OTC Beauty Magazine (OTC): Specifically as it relates to the Alleghany Corp., Inspired Beauty Brands recently endured a major shift in business.

Could you please explain that change in detail for readers?

Sam Maniaci (SM): For over 50 years, Alleghany Pharmacal was a company that had built a long trusted history with its consumer base.

However, in recent years the product offerings and packaging lacked innovation and creativity.

Therefore it limited itself in its growth potential.

During the past two years, the new management team evaluated the sales history and potential of every brand and SKU within the portfolios, redesigning and repackaging each of our core brands in order to appeal to a broader base of consumers. We discontinued unprofitable SKUs, looked for ways to reduce our overall cost of goods, streamlined our operations and rebuilt the entire organization to be competitive in 2012 and beyond.

We created more shelf efficient displays for our retailers allowing our SKUs to be more productive and profitable within our allotted space and also enhanced our current formulas with some of the hottest key ingredients (including Argan, Macadamia, Keratin, etc.) within the salon market today.

Our packaging also underwent a dramatic change by shifting the focus to a more contemporary look, appealing to a younger 70

OTC: How will this move alter the way the company does business, if in any way? What is the main thing store owners should be aware of in regards to the change?

SM: All our changes were a strategic move, specially engineered to allow us to run a more efficient, streamlined operation. This will enable us to be more competitive in our category and rebuild profitability for our distributors and store owners.

OTC: What is the latest trend you have seen emerging in the beauty industry and how has this company risen to meet that demand?

SM: We believe the surge in textured hair, by way of curly and natural styles, have spurred a lifestyle movement among multicultural women. We have repositioned and added products that complement this woman’s hair needs, by way of both style and texture preferences.

You will continue to see more from Inspired Beauty Brands focusing on this new wave of hair identification, and of course still focusing on key issues experienced from wearing different hairstyles (i.e. dryness, breakage, versatility).

Inspired Beauty Brands relaunched Lustrasilk’s Right On Curl under the new updated banner of Curl Max in September 2011 to meet the demands of the ever-changing consumer. Curl Max was a brand first developed over 30 years ago and has maintained its consumer base with a performance-driven formula. With the relaunch the original, luxurious formula was enhanced with Argan, and several new SKUs were introduced, including Curls Pudding, Twisty Curly Spray and Mousse which is receiving rave reviews from consumers.

OTC: What is the best way for retailers to position your products and effectively market them in their stores?

SM: The most effective way to position the Inspired Beauty Brands in-store is to brand block. By allowing a consumer to see the entire assortment of brands and offerings in one location, it simplifies the shopping experience. It is also extremely important to merchandise like products together in the set so that the consumer can compare the leading brands to make an educated decision. Too often new brands are implemented at store level in an “open space” as opposed to the curl or moisturizing sections. Customers can visually experience and understand what options they have and it allows them build their individual hair care regimens.

Once a customer builds a trusted HC regimen, it will encourage them to purchase multiple products and enhance profitability.

We share product usage and benefits with consumers on a daily basis, in addition to responding to their questions regarding where to purchase, recommendations on product usage for various hair types/textures, and general company information.

We want our customers to be able to reach us instantaneously and I believe the success of the brand is dependant upon our ability to provide platforms that engage our consumers.

Anything big in the works you would like to share?

‘평등’ 한 경영을 실천해 보세요 Smyrna, GA

람들은 오래 전부터 ‘평등’ 이라는 단어를 외치며 동등한 대우를 받길 원해왔다. 전 세계의 역사를 보더라도 ‘평등’ 이라는 단어를 앞세워 많은 크고 작은 혁명들이 일어났으며, 그러한 환경을 만들

기 위해 수 많은 사람이 목숨을 잃기도 했다. 하지만 아이러니 한 것은, 본인은 평등하게 대우 받기를 원하면 서 정작 자신은 모든 사람들을 동등하게 대하지 않는다는 것이다. 심지어 자식들 중에도 더 마음이 가는 자 식이 있을 수도 있는 마당에 남들이야 오죽 하겠는가 말이다. 더욱이 비즈니스 관점에서 본다면, 본인에게 보다 많은 이익을 가져다 주는 ‘단골’ 들에게 마음이 움직이는 것은 당연할 것이다. 물론, 그러한 사람들 과 좀더 돈독한 관계를 만들어 보다 튼튼한 수익구조를 만들 수도 있겠지만, 보다 넓은 시야를 가지고 본다 면 그것이 전체적인 비즈니스에 좋은 것만은 아닐 수도 있다. 고객의 입장에서, 자신의 친구는 특별한 서비 스를 받는데 본인은 그렇지 못하다는 것을 알게 되었을 때, 달가운 사람은 없을 것이다. 또한, 모든 스토어 들이 단골 손님만을 가지고 운영을 할 수도 없는 노릇인 것이다. 그렇다고 단골에게 막 대하라는 것이 아니 라, 어느 정도의 기준을 만들어 서비스를 평준화 시키는 방법을 말하는 것이다. 이러한 생각은 뷰티 스토어 를 운영하는 오너들도 한번쯤은 생각해 볼만한 경영 방침이 아닐까 생각을 해 본다. 이번 달에 OTC 뷰티 매 거진에서 인터뷰를 한, Smyrna, GA 에 위치한 Beauty 7 Mart 의 손윤식 사장은 이러한 경영방침으로 나름 대로의 성공을 만들어가고 있는 사람이다. 그와의 인터뷰 내용을 통해 좀더 자세한 얘기를 들어보도록 하자.

고객을 압도하는 쇼핑환경 행운을 상징하는 Beauty 7 Mart 라는 이름의 스토어를 운영하는 손사장은 88년도 에 가족과 함께 도미하여 현재 20여년이 넘는 세월을 뷰티업계에 몸담고 있다고 한다. 88년도에 헤어 도매상에 취직을 하여 일을 시작한 것이 뷰티 업계에 뛰어든 계기가 되었으며, 96년부터 본인의 스토어를 운영하게 되었다고 한다. 현재 손사 장이 운영하고 있는 3개의 스토어 중 필자가 방문한 스토어는 Smyrna, GA 에 위 치한 것으로, 7,500 sq ft 의 넓은 공간을 모던 스타일로 리모델링을 하여 고객들 에게 매우 쾌적한 쇼핑환경을 제공하고 있었다. 환한 조명과, 바닥부터 천정까지 갈색 톤으로 장식된 스토어는 웬만한 보석상보다 고급스러운 분위기를 연출하고 있었다. 특히, 뒤쪽에 마련되어 있는 가발 섹션은 스토어 안에 또 하나의 스토어가 있는듯한 분위기를 풍기며 가발 전문스토어와 같은 느낌을 내고 있었다. 또한, 곳 곳에 빼곡히 진열되어 있는 상품들은 스토어를 방문한 고객들의 눈길을 잡아 무엇 이라도 하나 구입하고 싶은 충동을 만들어 내기에 부족함이 없었다. 실제로 스토 어 밖에서 사진 촬영을 하다 만난 한 흑인고객은 “Beauty 7 Mart 를 방문하면 생 각한 것 보다 더욱 많은 제품을 구입을 하게 됩니다” 라며, 다양한 제품 구비와 깨 끗한 쇼핑환경이 그 이유라고 부가설명을 하였다.

역할의 분담 3개의 스토어를 운영하는 손사장은 하루에 보통 150 ~ 200 마일 정도를 운전하 게 된다고 한다. “스토어의 위치들이 조금 떨어져 있어 매일 적지 않은 시간을 운 전하게 됩니다” 라는 손사장은 실질적 스토어 운영은 각 스토어의 매니저들에게 전임하며, 본인은 그 매니저들을 뒤에서 지원해주는 역할을 하고 있다고 한다. “ 저는 스토어를 경영하는데 있어 직원들이 가장 중요하다고 생각합니다. 실제로 고 객들을 대하고 실무를 하는 사람들이 우리 직원들 입니다. 저는 그 직원들이 최고 의 능률을 발휘할 수 있는 환경을 만들어 주기 위해 뒤에서 조력하는데 최선을 다 하고 있습니다” 라고 한다. 그러한 조력을 하기 위해 하루에 지역 도매상과 각각 의 스토어를 150마일 이상씩을 운전해야 한다고 하니, 결코 쉬워 보이지는 않지 만, 손사장은 “근방에 도매상들이 위치하고 있다는 것이 고마울 따름입니다” 라 고 한다. 그러한 노력이 수반되다 보니 각각의 스토어에는, 소위 말하는 악성재고 품이 거의 없다고 한다.

는 좀더 개인적인 서비스, 좀더 편리한 쇼핑 환경을 만들 주는 것이 기본이다. 예를 들어, 단골이 항상 구입하는 제품은 최대 한 떨어트리지 않으며, 스토어에 없을 시에는 그것을 구해다 주어 그들에게 편의를 제공해 주는 것과 같은 것이다. “제품의 종류를 최대한 많이 구비해 놓으려고 합니다. 그 이유는, 고객 이 찾는 제품 중 하나라도 빠져 있으면 고객들은 앞으로 저희 스토어를 방문할 목적을 잃어버리는 것입니다. 그렇기 때문 에 현재 취급하는 제품들을 항상 구비하는 것은 물론, 고객들 이 찾는 제품들도 가급적 구비를 하는 편입니다”. 단골이라고 해서 무조건 가격을 깎아주는 것은 이제 옛말이 되어 버렸다. 소비자들도 이제는 가격보다는 자신이 필요로 하는 것을 구입 할 수 있는 스토어로 발길을 돌리는 추세이다. “저희 스토어 에서는 단골 고객이라는 의미가 특별히 없습니다. 어떤 면에 서 본다면, 모든 고객이 단골이라고 말할 수도 있습니다”. 물 론, 그들의 이름을 기억하고 불러주고 가격을 깎아 주는 것도 중요하다. 하지만, 인간적인 관계에만 호소하고 그들이 정작 스토어를 방문한 목적을 충족시켜주지 못한다면, 그들도 결국 엔 발길을 돌릴 수 있는 것이다. 흔히 말하는 ‘비즈니스는 비 즈니스’ 인 것이다. 특정 고객들만을 위한 특별한 서비스가 아 니라, 모든 사람들이 원하는 서비스를 제공하는 그러한 환경 을 만들어야 한다는 의미인 것이며, 모든 서비스를 상향 평등 화 한 것이라 할 수 있겠다.

또 다른 고객 평등화의 방침에는 ‘손님들과의 말다툼 절대 금지’ 사항이 있다. 이러한 사항은 손사장이 직원들에게 도 항상 강조하는 것이다. “단골이던 아니던, 우리의 수입 원 천은 우리 스토어를 방문한 고객입니다” 라는 손사장은, 현 80

재는 도난방지 시스템이 되어 있지만 이러한 시스템을 갖추 기 전에 심지어 손님이 스토어 안에서 제품을 그냥 가지고 나 가는 것을 봤다고 하더라도 절대 쫓아 가거나 강렬히 저지하 지 않았다고 한다. “그러한 손해는 반드시 나는 것이고, 그러 한 손해는 미리 경영상 loss 로 잡아놓는다고 생각을 하였습 니다” 라고 부연하였다. 스토어 오너들은 단골들이 그러한 실 수를 저질렀을 때 인간적으로 용서를 해주는 경우가 종종 있 다고 한다. 하지만, 모든 사람들을 용서 하기란 결코 쉬운 일 이 아닐 것이다. 이렇게 모든 고객들에게 같은 룰을 적용하다 보면 특정 고객들에게만 치우친 서비스를 제공할 필요가 없어 진다고 한다. 사실, 특정 고객들이 아니라 스토어를 방문한 모 든 고객들로 인해 수익은 창출되는 것이다. 요즘 뷰티 스토어 에는 유동 고객들이 매우 많다. 예전에 비해 숫자가 늘어난 뷰 티 서플라이 스토어들과, 스토어간에 가격 경쟁으로 인해 가 격을 따라 움직이는 ‘철새’ 고객들이 늘어난 이유에서일 것이 다. 물론, 아직도 많은 단골들을 가지고 있는 스토어들도 많이 있지만, 그 ‘단골’ 들도 반드시 한곳의 스토어 에서만 제품을 구입한다고 누가 장담할 수 있을까? 이에 대처하기 위해 가격 을 낮춰서 판매하는 것이 과연 옳은 방법일까? 이는 ‘철새’ 들 에게 임시적인 안식처만을 제공해 주는 격이 돼버릴 것이다. ‘ 철새’ 는 언제든지 떠날 준비가 되어있다는 것을 명심해야 할 것이다. 그렇다면, 손사장처럼, 소수에게 치중하기 보다는 다 수를 신경 쓰는 것이 더욱 현명한 방법일 것이라는 생각을 해 본다. 손사장은 근간의 계획에 대해 “한번 시도를 해봤다가 실패를 하였지만, 조만간 일요일에는 스토어를 닫을 생각입니다. 물 론 당장의 금전적인 손해는 있겠지만, 직원들이나 신앙생활 을 하는 저를 위해서도 일요일은 휴무를 하는 것이 옳다고 생 각을 하여 조만간 실행을 하려고 합니다” 라는 커다란 포부를 밝혔다. 마지막으로 뷰티인들에게 하고 싶은 말이 있냐는 질 문에, “뷰티 업계는 한인들이 많이 자리를 잡고 있는 민족적 인 사업 중 하나인데, 우리들이 시장을 잘 지켜나가서 이 업종 이 후손들까지도 잘 보존 되었으면 하는 바램입니다” 라는 말 을 끝으로 인터뷰를 마무리 하였다.

Therapy Trends Crossing the Kids Line When we think of the kids market we must differentiate between newborns, toddlers, tweens, and teens. It is almost recession-proof as long as there are new births and indulgent parents. But what is a kid? wenty seven years—this is how long the Western Buying Conference has been in existence and it doesn’t show signs of stopping any time soon.

Standing as the first trade show of the industry in 2012, the Western Buying Conference (WBC) was filled with eager companies, itching to get a head start on the successes the year is sure to hold. As show attendees and exhibitors alike stepped inside of Las Vegas’ Bally’s Hotel and Convention Center from January 16-17, they were filled with an eagerness and excitement that wasn’t just an overflow from the entertaining hotel casino.

Wrapping up January with a successful trade show was something all attendees looked for, and the WBC was sure to deliver.

The show reportedly boasted an increase of 10 percent in attendance and 191 exhibitor booths participating. This made the event the second largest distributor show in

America after Cosmoprof North America. Aisle after aisle was filled with companies eager to introduce attendees to new products they showcased. Networking was also a key ingredient to this year’s show, like others before, as the Western Rep Association strove to gather beauty suppliers, manufacturers, distributors and professional beauty stores together in one place to help business relationships grow stronger.

The conference also hosted a dinner which was attended by 578 industry participants who enjoyed entertainment by one of Las Vegas’ fine musical groups. This provided attendees with a well-deserved way to relax and enjoy a nice meal after a busy day on the show floor.

“The atmosphere and outlook of both distributors and customers was very positive looking ahead to the New Year,” stated Harlan Kirschner, treasurer of the Western Buying Conference. The pleasing results harness a growing anticipation for the next WBC show, scheduled for January 21-22, 2013, which promise to be just as successful.

A형과 B형이 가장 많고, 근소 한 차이로 O형이 3번째, AB형이 가장 적은 분포를 보이 고 있다. 가까운 일본인의 경우 ▲O형 : 30% ▲A형: 38% ▲B형: 22% ▲AB형: 10%로 우리나라처럼 A형이 가장 많지만 O형이 B형보다 많은 것으로 나타났다. 다수 유럽 국가의 경우 O형, A형이 다른 혈액형에 비해 다소 많은 비중을 차지하는 것으로 나타났다. 각 나라별 O형과 A형 의 비율을 살펴보면 독일인(84%), 프랑스인(90%), 영국 인(89%) 등이다. 한 가지 혈액형이 절대적으로 차지하는 경우도 있어 눈길을 끌었다. 북미 대륙 중서부의 블랙풋 인디언은 B형이 82%인 것으로 나타났다. 하와이언들은 A형이 61%로 많았다. 또 브라질 보로로 원주민과 페루 원주민의 경우 전부 O형인 것으로 나타나 그 배경에 대 해 궁금증을 자아내기도 했다

가주 뷰티서플라이 협회(회장 배영수) 는 지난 2월20일(월) Gardena, CA 에 위 치한 장수장에서 오후 7시부터 정기 이 사회를 개최하였다. 재적이사 21명중 19명의 이사가 참석하였고, 그외 3명의 회원업소에서 옵져버로 참석하였다. 이 날 이사회의 재무보고에서는 작년 말 정 기총회 및 송년회 결산현황이 보고되었 고, 회장 보고사항으로는 오는 7월에 개 최될 NBSDA주최 Trade Show의 일정 발표가 있었으며, 주요안건으로는 협회 정관개정위원회의 검토를 걸친 정관개 정건이 대부분 통과되었으나, 회장임기 개정건에서 새로운 의견이 나와 3월 이 사회에서 확정표결하기로 결정되었다.

‘2012년 장학기금 모금 골프대회’는 4월 22일(일) 12시에 Westridge Golf Club에 서 개최하기로 결정되었다. 또한, 올년 말에 발간예정인 제7호 협회지 준비를 위한 준비위원은 협회이사 중 약3~4명 의 자원을 받아3월 이사회에서 준비위원 을 확정 짓기로 하였다. 이날 회의의 가 장 중요한 이슈였던 도 매업체의 소매업진출( 겸업)의 문제점에 대한 토의에서는 지난 3여년 간 꾸준히 제기되었던 케미칼유통 도매업체인 C사의 소매업소 진출의 혹에 종지부를 찍을 만 한 확정적인 물증이 나 와 참석이사들이 상도 덕을 무시한 행위라고 성토하였다.

남부 버지니아 협회 남부 버지니아 협회는 지난 2월 12일 뉴포트 뉴스에 위치한 모나 식당에서 정기총회를 개최 하였다. 석식을 겸한 이날 총회에는 25 명의 임원 및 회원이 참석 하였다. 이날 안건으로는 - 오래된 케미 컬 제품들의 교환요구에 대한 시정, - 헤어 도매상들의 불규칙한 가격들에 대한 시정요구 등이 논의 되었다.

According the to the Professional Beauty Association’s (PBA) Salon/Spa Performance Index (SSPI) report for the third quarter of 2011, the SSPI fell to its lowest level in two years.

“Dampened by softer sales and traffic levels and continued deterioration in salon/spa owners’ outlook for sales growth and the economy, the Professional Beauty Association’s SSPI fell to its lowest level in two years. The SSPI is a quarterly composite index that tracks the health of and outlook for the U.S. salon/spa industry.”

‘Fro Fashion Week Takes Atlanta by Storm

The overall outlook also remains positive.
