Don’t completely count men out of the picture

because skin care is an important factor for them as well. Especially during the summer when yard work and weekend trips seem to call their name, skin cleansing and protection from the sun should be a daily concern. Despite the common misconception, sunscreen does more than protect against sunburn, and for that reason it is a necessity for all skin types.

Although the routines, tips and tricks of customers may be unique, they all require daily tender love and care. Men and women approach this need differently, but we’ve found two accounts that seem to share common ground – giving skin the attention it deserves.

My Three Keys to Beauty

I have three keys to beauty: moisturize, moisturize and moisturize. A little moisture can go a long way! Moisture adds luster, radiance and a hint of shine that

I read your magazine from time to time, and yes I’m a guy, but I like to read the articles you have on skin and beauty. I actually believe in taking care of myself. You can always look better and feel younger. I am a romance cover model and feel it is important to always keep that youthful appearance.

Because of your beauty pointers I have an early morning

regimen that I live by. When I shower I use an Olay moisturizing body wash with the loofah. After working up a nice lather, I rinse then use a Dove avocado bar. I make sure to wash my face before and after shaving.

I always shave in the shower which also exfoliates my

skin. When I am completely finished shaving I go over my face one last time with The Body Shop’s Vitamin C Cleansing Face Polish.

This brightens my skin and also protects from pollutants.

After the shower, I sometimes put on a sink-in moisture

mask which I leave on for a bit while it dries onto my face. This will help hydrate my skin.

After I remove the mask, I put on some smoothing

day cream which reduces fine aging lines, then a moisturizer with vitamin E. I also put on an anti-aging eye balm for men around my eyes so I don’t get dark circles; I believe L’Oreal puts a good one out. Finally, I use a moisturizing protective lotion which is put out through Garnier.

1. Drink plenty of water! True moisture starts from the inside out. When you are dehydrated, it shows. The results: dry skin, chapped lips and brittle nails and hair. The more water you partake in, the more natural moisture your body will produce.

2. Try Vicks BabyRub Ointment. This is the nonmedicated form of Vicks VapoRub that combines petrolatum, aloe extract, eucalyptus oil, lavender oil and rosemary oil. The petrolatum (petroleum jelly) is an excellent moisturizer while the aloe and various oils soothe the skin. Vicks BabyRub is a great overnight moisturizer for your lips and feet.

3. Try a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner.

This is great for individuals who suffer from dry hair, but make sure the product doesn’t weigh hair down and make it look heavy. Both Aveda and Mizani have excellent products that moisturize your hair while leaving it light and bouncy. If your hair is chemically treated, you should also use a deep conditioner at least once a month.

4. Use a nail conditioner. Conditioning your nails provides them with the vitamins and nutrients they need to be beautiful and keeps them moisturized. Some people choose to use hair conditioners; however, cosmetic companies produce both liquid and cream nail conditioners that will help moisturize and condition nails.

5. Aloe vera gel is a must have. While aloe vera is wellknown for its healing benefits, it is also a great and natural skin moisturizer. It’s sure to leave skin smooth, radiant and refreshed.

Is Sunscreen for Everyone?

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) classifies skin types into six categories ranging from fair, which burns easily, to sun-insensitive deeply pigmented that never burns. Although they are all different and may require varying degrees of protection, consumers of each skin type should be mindful of the sun’s dangers and what they can do to shield themselves from them.

You may be wondering why multicultural consumers should be concerned with the use of sunscreen, and the answer is simple – it does not protect against only sunburn. Daily use of sunscreen may reduce the risk of developing melanoma, a form of skin cancer.

So although sun-burn may not be a direct concern for customers, protection against this disease should be.

Additionally, prolonged exposure to the sun can cause skin care damage beyond burns. The development of wrinkles, sun spots and other signs of aging can be accelerated by becoming a victim to the sun’s powerful rays. This is why instead of only aloe vera products which are marketed to ease the pain of sunburn and repair skin, other cosmetic lotions and creams may receive increased sales as a result of damage from the sun.

Tweezers are your friend–they’ll allow you to hold the lash without blocking your view. Pick up the lash from the center and place it on top of the lash. Eyes and lash strips are not created equal; they are all different shapes and sizes. Align the lash to at the inner corner and then cut off any excess towards the outside of the band.

3. Once you’ve sized the lashes, apply a thin

strip of adhesive to the band. You don’t need gobs! You can gently squeeze the tube in one hand while slowly gliding the lash with your other hand across the bead of glue. If that doesn’t sound good, try squeezing a drop onto the tray and use either the tip of a makeup brush or an orangewood stick to apply the adhesive to the band. Both methods work well. Give the adhesive about 30 seconds to set.

When we talk about individual lashes, there are two versions: the true single lashes and then lash clusters, which are several lashes knotted together. They can be added to the entire length of the eye or just add a few clusters to the outside corners of eyes. These lashes are permanently curled, waterproof, easy to apply, and comfortable to wear. They are so natural your clients will forget they are wearing them.

The instructions below can work for both single lashes and clusters:

However it is important because of the different skin tone varieties that exist, from very light to extremely dark with many shades in between. For this reason there are many more colors and shades to choose from than there are for the general non-ethnic market, but color is only one of the factors in understanding the production of skin care cosmetics designed for African American consumers. These skin care cosmetics contain less oils and the reason why is shown in the next paragraph.

frican American people have naturally oily skin derived from their original African heritage in a region of the world where the climate is hostile from extreme heat and humidity, due to being geographically close to the equator. Oily skin is the God given gift to cool the skin in order to survive in that part of the world.

Therefore, skin care cosmetics designed for these consumers have less oil content than those designed for the general market. The hair of African American people is coarser and thicker for the reasons listed above, to protect the scalp from the thick vegetations that grow is that region and to protect the scalp from the heat of the sun.

Caucasians consistently complain of oily or greasy hair conditions and African Americans seldom, if ever, have this problem. In fact, they usually complain of just the opposite. The reason for this is due to the structure of kinky or overly curly hair being able to absorb much more oil than naturally straight hair.

The truth of the matter is black skin and scalp produces up to three times as much natural oils and sebum as white.

Curly, wavy and kinky hair has up to five times as much sulfur bonds as straight hair. These bonds soak up and hold the natural oils (sebum) or artificially applied oils that are able to penetrate the hair shaft. This is why there are few complaints concerning greasy buildup on people with these grades of hair.

People with naturally straight hair, especially blond or red hair, have fewer bonds in the hair to absorb scalp oils.

There are several facts that prove this. One is that in almost every case, if you compared the skin tone of an elderly African American person with that of a Caucasian of equal age living under the same climatic conditions and lifestyle, the African American will just about always look years younger. The reason why is because when we all perspire, salt (a saline solution) and sebum (oils) are secreted along with moisture. When more sebum is extracted, the salt is held in suspension by the oils, thereby disallowing it to make direct contact with the skin where it could dry out the skin of natural moisture and cause premature aging of the skin.

Here is a good example of this difference: if both an African American and Caucasian patron were given a permanent curl or wave using the same brand of product and followed the same procedure of application, they could not maintain their hair using identical home hair care products. The product used to maintain the care and condition of the African American patron’s hair would be too oily for the Caucasian patron. The product used by the one person would be too drying and ineffectual for the other.

In the hair care industry, products manufactured for the African American consumer always contain more oils than those for the general market. In the cosmetic industry, skin care products designed for consumers of this ethnicity contain less oils and emollients than those for the general market. This is because African American skin and scalps have more active oil producing sebaceous glands than Caucasians, not less as described in most cosmetology text books.

Exfoliate. Exfoliate. Exfoliate. I cannot say it enough. To keep an even complexion free of scars and hyperpigmentation, a natural glow and a good balance of oil production in the skin, exfoliation must take place. There are a few ways to accomplish this procedure. The process of exfoliation is the sloughing off of a superficial top layer of dead skin cells. Every day we shed skin cells regardless of whether or not we exfoliate, and the cells are always regenerating. Every seven years the entire body changes through the production of billions of cells. This is why hair and skin texture changes. This process can be sped up by using a facial brush, products with enzymes, acids also known as chemical peels or a mechanical scrub.

Enzymes can break down the surface layers of the skin without any aggressive exfoliation. Enzymes of pineapple, papaya and pumpkin are examples of exfoliators that can dissolve this superficial layer of skin with a simple application to the skin. Alpha-hydroxy acids or fruit acids are very good for every other day usage. The skin on the face is very sensitive so this type of exfoliant works very well.

A scrub with pumice, sugar or salt is best fitting for body exfoliation. These products can be used daily in the shower or as a professional service in a day spa. Consumers with super sensitive skin that cannot take exposure to a lot of products without experiencing adverse reactions may find the use of a facial brush with soft bristles refreshing. It can be used by simply rotating the brush with a hand in a circular massaging motion. This works as an excellent preventative measure for men who experience razor bumps or ingrown hairs.

Protection

Skin is exposed to so much in the atmosphere. Depending on work environments and where someone lives, there are things in the air that skin needs protection from. Long term exposure to the sun’s rays is usually what is concentrated on when it comes to skin protection. There are many other elements that we need to take in to consideration as well. Pollution, for instance, is a main contributor to the air quality that not only our lungs, but also the pores in our skin breathe. If we use moisturizers filled with ingredients that protect our skin such as SPF, shea butter, and vitamin E, we will have a protective barrier on the skin to ward off harmful pollution and UV rays.

It is essential that the moisturizer used specifically fits your skin type. Dry skin needs a heavier moisturizer, sensitive skin needs fragrance-free or hypoallergenic ingredients, and oily skin requires a light, water based moisturizer. These regulations 48

The more oily skin is the less of a chance it has of aging prematurely. Once the skin starts to dry and losses its elasticity, the aging process begins.

Skin types typically change with the seasons. For example, in the summer months a person can go from a combination skin type with an oily T-zone to an oily skin type with both oily cheeks and T-zone. The T-zone is in the middle of the face including the chin, nose and forehead.

From the Inside Out Prevention and protection are key to having flawless skin.

You have to be willing to take the time to pay attention to ingredients. Dedication to a clear, sound skin care regimen with the appropriate moisturizer, toner and exfoliator is also essential. Drink lots of water each day and remember that a water intake of half your weight in ounces each day will keep your insides, as well as your outside, flushed. Ultimately, skin is a reflection of what is going on internally so having good nutrition and a balanced diet is the best thing you can do for your skin.

If you want to find black consumers on Sunday, church is the place to look. It is estimated that 60 percent of African-Americans attend religious services. Companies who want to sample products find that doing so through ethnic churches creates extremely favorable results.

For as long as African-Americans have occupied this country, faith and religion provide a strong sense of unity and love that have been the ties that bind. Ministers, elect men and women, have been relied upon for guidance and direction. Some, like the Rev. Al Sharpton, Rev. Jesse Jackson, Sr. and the Pastor Shirley Caesar have extended their influence beyond the pulpit and have made social and political statements. e never get around to them. There’s never enough time. We plan to start tomorrow. There are always too many distractions. The list of excuses could go on and on. Use these tips to get motivated to start your projects and to stay motivated enough to see them through to completion.

Eat One Bite at a Time

Many people stop in the middle of a project because they get frustrated or bored with the size of the project at hand and decide it would be easier to do something else. Break your goals down into smaller mini goals that can be accomplished in a small amount of time. You’ll be certain to finish these smaller tasks and feel a sense of accomplishment that will push you to continue.

Make it Visual

Many charities and organizations draw a vertical thermometer with incremental goals to help them visualize their progress toward a financial goal. You can do the same thing with your project or goal. On a sheet of poster board, draw your own thermometer. Indicate your starting point on the bottom, your completion point on the top, and incremental goals along the side. Place it where you’ll see it daily and fill it in as you complete each mini goal.

Night Owl or Early Bird?

Figure out when you’re most focused. Some people can easily focus in the morning and like being able to get things done and out of the way.

Others work better in the afternoon and evening when they feel a little more awake. Decide when your most productive time is and schedule your tasks accordingly.

Set Reminders

Keep your attention on one thing at a time and set a timer to go off every 15 minutes. When the timer goes off, if you’ve strayed from your original project, get back to it right away. Keep setting the timer until you’ve reached your goal for the day.

Try to ‘Beat the Clock’

Competition is often a great motivator for many of us. You can create your own competition by setting a timer and trying to complete your task(s) before the timer sounds. You can do the same thing with a favorite CD. Listen to the CD while you work (as long as it’s not distracting) and try to get your work done before the CD is done.

Eliminate Interruptions

When you’re ready to work, have your answering machine or voicemail field your calls. Turn off the television. Put a ‘Do Not Disturb’ sign on your door. Resist the urge to constantly check your e-mail. The less you’re interrupted, the quicker you’ll get your project completed.

Write it Down

Write down what needs to be done. When it’s written down, it’s more concrete, and there’s a greater chance you’ll start and complete it. It will 64

Set Deadlines

Often we say, “I’ll get to it when I have time.”

You won’t have time to get everything done, unless you schedule time. Set specific deadlines for each of your mini-goals and stick to them.

Plan your rewards before you get started so you know what you’re working towards and stay motivated.

eople who hate to say no find it hard to do and sometimes do much worse than hurt someone’s feelings – they either don’t say anything, which passively sends an incorrect message of “yes,” or they say no in such a way that the other person doesn’t really know what is being said, sending the message of “maybe.”

People who don’t mind saying no don’t find it hard to do, but can lack the skills to do it gracefully and very often instill hard feelings, even when that is not their intent. For those of you who do not have a problem saying no, but need a little guidance on how to say it more effectively, here are some tips.

Tip #1:

“I’m Sorry” doesn’t have to mean you are really sorry. A little empathy can go a long way.

Tip #2: Repeat back to the other person their point

of view. That will allow them to listen to yours. Once you prove to someone you understand their point of view by repeating it back to them they can stop explaining it over and over again.

Tip #3:

You don’t have to prove to someone that the situation is their fault. Most people just want empathy, not for you to take the blame. If possible, take their side as much as you can, but return to the situation at hand.

Tip #4:

Show the other person you wish it could be different. Telling someone, “I wish I could do this for you… however, I just can’t” is much more powerful than, “I won’t do this for you because I don’t have to.”

Tip #5: Help solve the problem in another way if

possible. Even if alternatives aren’t the answer, the fact that you offered them shows you care. Most people, when being told “no,” can take it a little better if it is coming from someone who seems to genuinely care.

Tip #6:

Avoid the word “but” when empathizing.

When you say, “I understand, but…” what the other person hears is, “I don’t understand.”

Using the tips above, you can say no and avoid conflict.

Remember, saying no doesn’t have to create bad feelings if you show a little empathy. Follow these simple tips and you might just get a little less resistance from people.

별로 힘들지 않게 No를 말하는 사람도 있으나, 좀더 부드러운 표현으로 하는 기술이 없을 경우에는 본인의 의사와 상관없이 상대방에게 좋지 않은 인상을 남기게 된다. 쉽게 No를 말할 수 있지만, 뜻을 전달하는 기술이 부족한 사람들을 위해 효과적으로 말할 수 있는 방법을 알려주고자 한다.

#1: “미안합니다”라는 말이, 꼭 진심으로 미안한 경우에만 쓰일 필요는 없다. 공감을 하게 되면 좋은 방향으로 흘러가는 것이다.

#2: 상대방의 입장에서 생각해라. 그렇게 하면 당신의 이야기에 귀를 기울이게 된다. 상대방에게 여러분이 그들을 이해하고 있다고 느끼게 만들면, 그들도 같은 말을 계속해서 반복할 필요가 없게 된다.

#3: 상대방의 상황이 그로 인해서 잘못되었다고 확인시킬 필요가 없다. 대부분의 사람들은 공감을 얻기를 바라지, 책망을 듣고 싶어 하지 않는다. 가능한, 그들의 편을 들어주고, 현실적인 상황으로 돌아오면 된다.

#4: 다른 상황이 되길 바라는 마음을 전달해라. “나도 이렇게 하고 싶지만, 그럴 수 없습니다”라고 말하는 것이 “내가 그렇게 할 필요가 없기 때문에, 하지 않는 것입니다” 라는 말보다 훨씬 효과적이다.

dvertising, like sales or sales training is simply a subsection of marketing. Marketing is the activity and process for creating, communicating, and delivering a product or service that has value for the end user – your customer. When completed, your marketing plan will direct sales techniques and provide the process for communicating the values, image and message of your small business. It is used to identify the customer, satisfy the customer, and keep the customer. So where should you begin?

With Market Research. You have to know who the target customer of your business is. Without that, how could you plan advertising or even stock your shelves with the right products?

Then as a result of identifying your target customer, analyze your competitive status. For example, if you are going to sell a specific product to a certain customer and another business is currently providing a similar product, what is your competitive advantage that turns the customer to you? Is it price? Better service? Both? How will you effectively communicate that to your prospect?

This research is critical not only before the start of a business, but is necessary to stay on top of that research on a regular basis. Large companies such as Wal-Mart and Costco shop each other on a constant basis. They have people going into each other’s stores and to record prices and everything else relative to competition. They are then taking that back to the marketing department to determine how to compete and the marketing strategies are then developed.

If your start-up business has either a store or a sales office, marketing includes the first impression you’ll have on customers.

Keep in mind that this is the first thing your customer sees, hears and smells. This includes everything from overall cleanliness, keeping your sidewalks and windows clean and ensuring staff remains professional with language, clothing, etc.

When it comes to your business signage remember the job of a sign is to direct. It needs to catch attention, have a clear message, and has to be thought through in terms of the speed of travel as people pass your sign. If it’s going to primarily be seen by people driving by, just give them clear points to remember your message.

An in-store sign can obviously have more detail.

We started a business years ago selling houses in an area where streets hadn’t yet been paved. Before the show homes were built people came to a trailer via a gravel road. Since the trailer was a compromise to start with we were determined to make a good impression when they arrived. So we overspent on signage. We overspent on brochures. We overspent on the pictures and renderings of the houses inside the trailer. They soon forgot that they were in a trailer and started to embrace the product that we were selling. We outsold our competitors with completed show homes by 2 to 1!

his article is designed to assist you in helping to make your store have the maximum appeal for your shoppers and to generate additional sales and profits in a “shopper friendly” environment. Throughout it, various problems and possible solutions will be addressed. In order to establish what problems the OTC stores are encountering and prioritizing them, I have tackled the most severe problems first and foremost and come up with workable solutions to correct those areas.

How many brands of a particular category is appropriate?

A basic rule of thumb; as a category grows you would carry a bigger variety and more sizes of those products. That way it would be in proportion to the strength of the category. For example, in considering styling aids, spritzes and styling gels you might want a large variety of that category in various sizes, seeing their popularity. The sizes would be dependent upon the mix of customers that you have. If you have a lot of professionals shop at your store you would carry larger sizes to accommodate those professionals for ease of application and economy of purchase.

Conversely, as a category deteriorates and you’re selling less of that item you would cut back the variety that you are stocking and only carry the top brands. You would still make the category available, but you wouldn’t have to have as many individual manufacturers or products on the shelf. As the category and volume within it increases your stock should increase or decrease proportionately.

Industry Trends: What markets are flat, where are the new opportunities?

There is no dominant hair style – conversely there is no dominant category of products being sold. Items that are flat in sales are relaxer kits and relaxers in general.

New sales opportunities are in the Argan Oil systems and maintenance items, organic products, natural products, lace front glues for hair extensions, men’s shaving products, skin care, cosmetics, fade creams, children’s products for hair, hair color and accessory items (i.e. bowls, gloves, capes, peroxide, etc.), edger products for smoothing frizzy edges, hair extensions, wigs and products for maintaining them. Kits are also still selling, but not as strongly as they once were. Customers are seeing that more savings can be found in buying the open stock items and getting several uses out of them rather than one use from a kit.

You want to have available a variety of signage – outside signs that say, “Visit our newly enlarged skin care, cosmetic, men’s

Feature grooming, appliance department, etc.” Signage application should be spaced throughout the year (i.e. put op one or two signs a month).

Attending trade shows and sending some of your personnel to see demonstrations of how products are applied and how styles are achieved will keep you abreast as to what is going on in the marketplace. Reading trade publications and subscribing to the beauty and styling magazines as well African American publications in general will also keep you ahead of the game.

Attending trade shows and discussing problems that you are having and asking for solutions is important.

You should do some type of mailing or individual visits to stay in touch with your professional stylists. Provide courtesy cards so they can identify themselves as a professional to buy specific products, perhaps at a professional discount. That way they can find out what kind of products they’re looking for and what they would like you to stock – for example, cutlery. You may not be stocking a big enough variety of implements for them or you may not be carrying a high enough quality of cutlery, shears, blow dryers or curling irons.

You need to find out what level of products they want you to carry and if you did carry them, they would The OTC stores buy from you. Determine what you are getting calls for that you don’t stock. Perhaps you could maintain a book, and as you get calls for these items you should write them down and go to your normal sources to find out what the products are, if they are local, specialized or national product, a “me too” product or a unique item. From that information you can judge its acceptability in the marketplace.

You should have a sign up reading, “If you don’t see what you’re looking for, please ask.” That way, when they ask you can tell your customer, “Yes, we can get that for you next week,” or, “We’re out of stock right now, but we’re expecting it in. If you give me your name and phone number I’ll contact you when it arrives.”

The OTC stores have the best opportunity to introduce products because they are different from retail stores who are locked into space and time constraints as to how often they are going to adjust their mix of products. The OTC store can do it overnight and they can seize the momentum much quicker than retail people can. For this reason, testing ground for products is a plus, not a minus.

The only thing you have to keep in mind is that you should be cooperating with those who cooperate with you. You should handle more of the products that are not available through other sources of supply. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t carry the popular items, you have to carry those, but carry everything in addition to that.

Make it a shopping experience to go to an OTC store by having a variety of products. The consumer will perceive that you have better quality products than they can find in their local retail stores and that you probably have somebody on staff that is knowledgeable about what these products are, how they work and how they can solve various problems they encounter.

“Shopper friendly” means you have sign work up and knowledgeable people on the floor who can explain the items, the difference between them and who can recommend items to solve problems. It also means you have pass out materials which has information about product use. Pass out samples to customers so they can try and test them. Have those items available when they are timely. Also have a clean, well lit and well merchandised store staffed by courteous, knowledgeable people. Good consumer and community relations are also important, along with charity support. Be sure to have an attitude of gratitude for shopping at your store and appreciation for customer’s business.

The customer who likes to browse is one of your best customers because he or she will be more likely to pick up your new items and purchase more than the customer who wants to just get their one item and get out. Don’t be suspicious of customers who browse. We realize that pilferage is a problem, but if a customer who is looking around has no intention of ever taking anything has the slightest feeling that they are being suspected, you can be sure you’ll never see that customer again.

Shopping is a very pleasant experience for most women, especially shopping for products that will enhance their looks and make them feel prettier, younger and more glamorous.

They may even be looking to the beautiful models in the posters that should be up all around your stores. It’s a good idea to put a “New!” sign next to anything that is new in your store so customers’ eyes are drawn to it. Chances are they will at least look at it and possibly even buy it.

I trust that this vehicle will fulfill its indication of enlightenment of issues you face daily. Just as I indicated, signage in your place of business stating “If you don’t see what you’re looking for, please ask” is very important. Relatively, this is my message to you - if you have issues that you have difficulty dealing with, ask for help. Your best interest will be served by voicing those issues to your favorite magazine or mentor to help you deal with them. Hopefully your being better informed will result in a more successful and profitable future for your business.

“고객 편리”란 말은 명확한 사인과 제품간의 다른 점 및 문제를 해결할 수 있는 제품을 권할 수 있는 지식을 가지고 있는 직원이 대기하고 있다는 뜻이다. 또한, 제품의 원료에 대해서도 설명할 수 있다는 뜻이기도 하다. 고객들에게 샘플을 나누어주어 테스트해 볼 수 있도록 하고, 적절한 시기에 구비해 놓도록 해라. 또한, 스토어를 깨끗이 잘 정돈해 놓아야 하며, 예의 바르고, 제품지식이 풍부한 직원을 채용하도록 해라. 고객, 그리고 자선단체를 후원하며 지역사회와 관계를 잘 유지하는 것도 중요하다. 고객들이 여러분의 스토어에서 쇼핑하는 것에 대한 감사한 마음가짐을 반드시 가지고 있어야 한다.

William Dovellos, VP of Sales and Marketing for Royal & Langnickel, has seen the family business grow and evolve since he began there nearly 40 years ago. Branching out from artist brush manufacturing to reach the beauty industry, he claims when makeup artists bring their passion and creativity to the table the possibilities and results are endless. OTC Beauty Magazine (OTC): Please provide us with a brief description of Royal & Langnickel’s history. How did this company get its start?

William Dovellos (WD): Our family emigrated from a small island in Greece in 1964.

The company originally began as an importer and wholesaler of natural sea sponges sourced from our native island in Greece and sold to art, beauty and hardware stores in the late 1960s. Soon the company began looking to expand its product offering and realized that brushes (of some sort or another) were being sold in all the markets the company was servicing. The company introduced a handful of artist brushes under the brand name Royal Brush and began marketing them within the art industry with great success and market acceptance. This small foray into artist brushes proved to be successful.

The company initially got started in manufacturing brushes when my older brother George, while attending a trade show, heard 82

several artists express frustration that the quality and selection of brushes from competing brush companies were not meeting their specific artistic needs. At that point he realized that there was a real opportunity to win over the market simply by listening and acting on artists’ suggestions. The challenge was being able to control the quality of the product. He became very passionate about brushes and realized that in order to meet and surpass customer expectations the company was going to have control the brush-making process from start to finish. Shortly thereafter, we changed the company name to Royal Brush Manufacturing and began manufacturing brushes in Indiana. In 1990 we purchased Langnickel, a renowned brush brand who at the time was manufacturing their own brushes since 1943 in lower Manhattan. We moved the Langnickel manufacturing operation and transferred most all of their senior brush technicians, bringing several decades worth of fine brush making experience with them. We incorporated the Langnickel brand into the company name in the late 1990s and Royal & Langnickel was born.

OTC: How is Royal & Langnickel structured? Briefly describe the divisions that make up the company.

WD: Fortunately now, we have grown to become a global leader in the manufacturing of fine art and beauty brushes. Royal & Langnickel is made up of two distinct divisions: Arts & Crafts and Beauty. We offer our own highly regarded, branded products in both divisions as well as OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer)/ Contract Manufacturing and Private Label services. Within the arts and crafts division we specialize in fine art brushes, supplies and art activities. Our beauty division provides professional grade brushes designed for use by makeup artists and enthusiasts, body artists, and spa and nail technicians.

OTC: What indicated a need for your product/line within the beauty industry?

WD: Royal & Langnickel has been manufacturing OEM makeup, nail and spa brushes for almost 30 years now. When we started manufacturing brushes we initially concentrated our efforts developing branded products within the Arts & Craft

market. However, during this time more than a few beauty/ cosmetic companies would approach us to manufacture or supply them with OEM beauty brushes. Building on that OEM experience, coupled with our years of experience, manufacturing them made perfect sense. So we went to the experts—makeup artists who use the products every day—and asked what characteristics they would like to see in high-quality professional makeup brushes. Our in-depth market analysis led us to the conclusion that no one company was truly providing beauty professionals and end users with products that met their specific artistic needs. The companies that approached that level were priced beyond most people’s reach. We took that information and developed three distinct makeup brush collections, each with a smart variety of shapes and sizes of brushes, making sure that each brush was artistically specific and designed to allow for precision placement of color.

OTC: What are the newest trends in cosmetics and how has Royal & Langnickel met consumer demands for them?

WD: A movement towards synthetic hair makeup brushes has been a growing trend. We have developed a synthetic filament within our SILKTM brush line that closely mimics the application achieved by a natural hair cosmetic brush.

OTC: What sets your products apart from others in the industry?

WD: First and foremost, we are a brush manufacturer.

We own, operate and oversee our manufacturing facilities and have complete control over most aspects of the manufacturing process. Most other companies private label their brushes from other overseas manufacturers and have no control over the process. Others began as cosmetic companies and added brushes as an accessory item to their lines. Unlike them, we are truly immersed in the manufacturing of brushes from the hair, to the ferrule and handle. I think this is evident in the craftsmanship of each and every brush we put our name on.

OTC: Will Royal & Langnickel be attending Cosmoprof North America in Las Vegas in July? What type of value do you think business-to-business shows offer storeowners and manufacturers?

WD: Yes, we will be attending the Cosmoprof North America Show in Las Vegas. B2B shows allow store owners to stay in touch with new products and trends that have entered the marketplace. It also gives attendees a chance to see and feel the products first hand, become more familiar with the suppliers and become educated on the products they do, and should, sell.

OTC: From a storeowner’s perspective, what is the easiest aspect of doing business with Royal & Langnickel?

WD: As a family owned and operated business we are very sensitive to all our customers’ needs. Whether a small business or large corporation, each and every customer is 84

OTC: What feedback have you gotten from OTC stores that currently carry Royal & Langnickel products? How do they benefit?

WD: Our OTC’s recognize that the quality of all three brush collections we offer is superior to the brushes offered by the most famous prestige cosmetic brands, yet our MSRPs (Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Prices) are aggressively priced to sell. In other words, OTC stores that carry our products find that offering our makeup brushes makes them more than competitive with the best department stores.

OTC: What do you feel is the most important thing for multicultural beauty store owners to know when recommending your company’s products to their customers?

WD: Our product is multicultural because it can be used by anyone. We’ve designed three professional grade product lines at three price points to meet the demands of our diverse customer base and we stand behind our products 100 percent. SILK™ is our most luxurious line, designed for the consummate professional.

Our MasterPro™ line is a stand out among makeup artists and are most noted for its signature blue nickel ferrule and black barrel handle. And our Brush Essentials™ line is designed to fit the needs of makeup artists and students alike.

OTC: What types of POP material does Royal & Langnickel offer to OTC retailers and what makes them work?

WD: We offer a brush display with a 10” footprint that includes everything the store needs to sell our product. Every assortment comes complete with the brush display, graphics and testers. It’s difficult to sell brushes unless the consumer can feel the quality of the brush, so the complimentary testers are a real plus as many companies charge extra for these. Also, we pack a high profit center in a small footprint where space is at a premium in most OTC’s.

OTC: What is the best business advice you can give storeowners?

WD: Really understand the different qualities of cosmetic brushes their stores feature so the customer really understands what they are getting for their money. Often times when a customer comes in looking for makeup brushes and the quality difference is not explained to them, they will choose the less expensive option. If the difference in quality is clearly explained the consumer can make a more educated decision.

떤 일을 결정하려고 하는 순간에 무엇이 옳고 틀린 지를 확실하게 구분하기란 힘든 일이다. 대부분, 시간 이 지남에 따라 그러한 결정이 옳은 것이었는지 틀인 것이었는지가 판가름 나게 된다. 하지만, 매번 무엇 이 옳고 틀린 것인지를 반드시 가려야 하는 것은 아니다. 특히 비즈니스를 경영하는데 있어서는 더욱 그렇 다. 물론, 잘못된 결정으로 인해 비즈니스의 흥망이 결정될 수도 있지만, 자신이 잘못 내린 결정에서도 얼마든지 극복 할 수 있는 상황을 만들어 나갈 수 있기 때문이다. 중요한 것은 자신이 내린 결정에 대한 ‘소신’을 가지고 있어야 한다는 것이다. 자신의 소신을 갖고 내린 결정에 대한 결과에 대해서는 어떻게든 해결할 수 있는 의지가 뒤따르기 때 문이다. 대부분의 사람들이 결정을 내리는 순간이 오면, 주위의 대다수 의견을 따르기 마련인데, 다수라고 해서 모두 맞는 것은 아니다. 현재 뷰티 업계에 만연히 퍼져있는 가격경쟁에 대한 것도 그러한 상황 중 하나이다. 주의의 스토어 들이 가격을 내리니, 나도 거기에 동참할 수 밖에 없는 상황처럼 보여진다. 하지만 자신만의 ‘소신’을 가지고 다른 경쟁 무기를 장착하여 맞서면 언젠가는 좋은 결실을 보는 날이 오게 될 것이다. 이번에 OTC 뷰티 매거진에서 인터뷰 한 앨라배마주, 몽고메리시에 위치한 Suna Beauty Supply의 김정순사장은 주위의 환경에 아랑곳 하지 않고 자신의 ‘소신’대로 스토어를 운영하는 오너 중 한 명이다. 올해로 뷰티 업계에서 스토어를 운영한지 19년차 베테랑인 그 녀의 ‘소신’을 함께 들어보자.

정갈한 스토어 환경 72년도에 도미하여 직장생활만을 해오던 김 사장은 93년도에 그 당시 성행하던 뷰티 서 플라이 업계에 뛰어들었다. 직접 스토어를 운영한 경험이 전무했던 그녀는 “직장생활 을 통해 손님 대하는 방법을 익혀 자신 있었 습니다” 라며 오랜 직장 생활이 비즈니스를 경영하는데 많은 도움이 되었다고 한다. 경

험은 없었지만, 시작한지 몇 년이 지나지 않 아 스토어를 5개로 늘리며 승승장구하였다 고 한다. “그때는 시대가 좋았었습니다” 라 는 김사장은 현재는 1호점과 7년전 새로 오 픈한 스토어만을 경영하고 있다. 스토어를 들어서면, 낮은 선반들로 인해 시 야가 널리 확보되어 3,000 sq ft 의 스토어가 훨씬 넓어 보였다. 다른 스토어에 비해 많이 낮은 선반들에 대해 “선반이 높으면 위쪽에

고객과의 소통 김사장은 눈에 보이는 스토어 환경뿐만 아니라 스토어를 찾아오는 고객들에게도 최상의 쇼핑 환경을 만들어 주려 노력하고 있었다. 현재 3,000 sq ft 의 스토어에는 직원 5명이, 1 호점인 2,500 sq ft의 스토어에는 4명이 일을 하고 있다고 한다. 규모에 비해 조금 많지 않 냐는 질문에 “물론 2명이 바쁘게 돌아가면서 일을 할 수도 있겠지요. 하지만 굉장히 빠듯 하게 일을 해야 할 것입니다. 그러다 보면 손님들에게 좋은 서비스를 제공하지 못합니다. 인건비도 고객들에게 좋은 서비스를 제공하기 위한 당연한 지출로 생각해야 합니다” 라며 고객 서비스의 중요성을 강조하였다. “우리 소매상 비즈니스는 전적으로 사람을 상대하는 비즈니스입니다. 오너와 고객이 대화를 통해 소통하는 것이 매우 중요합니다” 라는 김사장 은, 비즈니스를 시작하려면 사람과 소통하는 방법부터 배워야 한다고 한다. 손님들을 편안 하게 해줘야 단골로 만들 수 있다고 한다. 사실, 대부분의 스토어 오너들에게 가장 커다란 지출 중에 하나가 인건비이다. 모두가 인건비를 줄이고 있는 상황에 김사장은 그녀의 소신 대로 스토어를 운영해 나가고 있었다.

경영 2세대들을 위한 지침 “요즘 많은 경영 1세대 들이 자식들에게 스토어를 물려주고 있습니 다. 스토어를 2세들에게 넘겨 줄 때는 그러한 요소들 먼저 가르쳐주고 넘겨줘야 하겠습니다” 라는 김사장은, 경쟁 스토어들 때문에 나의 비 즈니스가 감소하고 있다는 생각 보다는, 자신만의 서비스로 승부해야 한다고 하며, 시간이 지나면 주변의 환경에 크게 영향 받지 않게 될 것 이라고 한다. 또한, “스토어를 운영할 때는 욕심부리지 말고, 허영부 리지 말고, 오랜 시간을 헌신적으로 비즈니스에 매달려야 한다는 것 도 알려줘야 합니다” 라며, 그러다 보면 비즈니스는 자신도 모르게 어 느 정도의 괘도에 올라와 있을 것이라고 한다. 대부분 비즈니스를 하 면서 돈을 벌게 되면, 허영심에 들떠 개인적인 소비가 늘어나게 되는 데, 어린 경영자들이 그러한 점을 간과하기 쉽기 때문에 충분한 사전 교육을 해줘야 한다고 한다.

정찰제 고수 Suna 뷰티 서플라이 에서는 가격흥정을 하지 않는다고 한다. “물론 고 객들이 와서 왜 가격을 깎아주지 않느냐며 불만을 토로하는 경우가 있 기도 합니다. 하지만 그런 고객들을 모두 따라갈 수는 없습니다. 어차 피 그러한 성향의 고객들은 언제든지 가격이 싼 곳을 찾아 다니는 고 객일 뿐입니다” 라는 김사장은, 한번 할인을 해준 고객들은 다시 찾아 왔을 때 정상가격을 받기가 힘들어진다고 한다. “정찰제를 고수하는 것이 비즈니스를 오래도록 유지할 수 있는 방법인 것입니다” 라는 김 사장은 그러한 곤란한 상황을 미연에 방지하기 위해 종업원들에게만 계산을 하도록 시킨다고 한다. “사실, 그러한 이유로 인해 고객들이 다 른 스토어로 가는 경우가 많이 있습니다. 하지만 그렇다고 그들이 영 영 가버리는 것은 아닙니다. 그러한 성향의 고객들은 돌고 돌아 다시 스토어를 찾아오곤 합니다” 라고 한다. 김사장은 단골을 만드는 노하우로 “꾸준함”을 꼽았다. 이는 김사장의 소신 있는 경영으로부터 나오는 것이었다. 항상 자신의 생각을 믿고 꾸준히 밀고 나가 자신만의 성공을 이뤄가고 있는 것이다. 김사장은 마지막으로 “남들을 너무 의식하지 말고, 자신의 방식대로 스토어운 영을 했으면 좋겠습니다. 그렇게 함으로 해서 본인도 많은 이익을 볼 수 있을 것입니다” 라고 하였다. 순간의 상황에 따라 말이 바뀌는 사 람은 사회에서도 신뢰받지 못하는 경우가 대부분이다. 스토어 경영에 서도 고객과의 신뢰가 무너지면 회복하기가 힘들 것이다. 그러한 것 으로 미루어 보아, 김사장의 소신 있는 경영은 많은 사람들에게 필요 한 경영 방식이지 않을까 라는 생각을 해본다.

Therapy Trends Under Cover Action for Cover Ups Therapeutic action capability is a cost of entry for cosmetics into the eye, lip, lash and brow categories. As your consumers colorize their image with the latest shades, their makeup is acting as an anti-aging double agent. Primer coats provide a layer of humectants and protection between the daily moisturizer and the facial foundation. Tinted concealers treat hyper pigmentation.

Multicultural women will seek a wide variety of fashionable shades. Stock their foundation, blush and eye design shades with products that accent anti-aging.

대되는 부분이다. 지금까지 진행된 연 구에 따르면 전기차 시대에 등장하는 주유소는 두가지 방식이 논의되고 있 다. 충전소에서 배터리를 직접 충전하 는 방식과 완충된 배터리를 교환하는 방식이다. 전기차 시대의 주유소는 이 둘 가운데 선택될 것으로 보인다. 배터 리를 충전하는 방식, 전기충전소가 구 현되기 위해서는 얼마나 빨리 배터리 를 충전할 수 있느냐가 관건이다. 전압 이 낮으면 충전시간이 길어지기 때문 에 안전하게 전압을 높이는 기술 개발 이 선행돼야 한다. 전문가들은 240볼 트의 전압으로 충전을 할 경우 2~6시 간내 충전을 완료할 수 있다고 예상하 고 있다. 전압을 480볼트까지 높이면 20분내 완충이 가능하다. 하지만 현행 주유소 주유시간보다는 시간이 길어질 것으로 보인다. 한꺼번에 많은 차량이 몰려 전력 부족 현상이 나타날 가능성 도 크다. 충전소에서 머무르는 시간이 길어짐으로 인해 단순히 연료주입 기 능의 현재 주유소의 역할에 휴식과 오 락의 기능이 더해질 수 있을 가능성이 클 전망이다. 배터리 교환형 충전소는

짧은 시간내 완충된 배터리를 공급할 수 있다는 것이 장점으로 꼽힌다. 하지 만 크기가 큰 배터리 교체의 편의성을 높여야하는 문제와 각 차량의 배터리 모델을 어떻게 단일화할 것인가 하는 숙제가 남아있다. 특히 향후 주유소는 지금까지와는 전혀 다른 모습으로 재 탄생하게 될 것으로 보인다. 태양광을 활용해 전력을 생산하거나 앞서 언급 한 것과 같이 연료공급의 기능에 쇼핑, 휴식의 기능이 더해질 전망이다. 일부 대형마트는 향후 전기차 충전소를 설 치할 계획을 공개하며 전기차 충전소 사업에 뛰어들 준비를 갖추고 있다. 지 식경제부와 환경부는 올 상반기내 충 전소 시설에 대한 최종 표준안을 결정 할 방침이다. 또 정부는 전기차 충전소 를 2011년까지 200대, 2030년까지 2 만7000여대까지 늘리기로 했다. 정유 업계 관계자는 “주유소가 새로운 모습 으로 등장할 날이 머지않았다”며 “어 떤 모습으로 달라지더라도 새로운 수 익을 창출할 수 있는 기회가 될 것”이 라고 말했다.

사과와 셀러리가 잔류 농약이 가장 많 은 농산물로 꼽혔다고 미국 일간 로 스앤젤레스타임스(LAT)가 환경단체 ‘ 환경활동그룹’(EWG)을 인용하여 보 도했다. 이 신문에 따르면 워싱턴 소 재 비영리기구인 EWG가 이날 발표 한 ‘2011 농산물 살충제에 대한 쇼핑 객 가이드’에서 사과의 경우, 미 농무 부 검사에서 700개 샘플 가운데 무려 98%가 살충제를 함유했다. 사과는 농 약 잔류치가 가장 많은 12개 과일 및 채소 명단에서 수위를 차지했다. 이번 보고서는 53개 과일 및 채소를 비교했 는데, 사과 다음으로는 셀러리, 스트 로베리, 복숭아, 시금치, 수입산 천도 복숭아, 수입산 포도, 스위트 피망, 감

자, 미국산 블루베리, 상추, 케일, 콜 라드 등에서 많이 검출됐다. 한편, 농 약 잔류치가 가장 낮은 15개 농산물 명 단에는 양파, 옥수수, 파인애플, 아보 카도, 아스파라거스 등이 포함됐다. 켄 쿡 EWG 대표는 “이번 지침은 소비자 들로 하여금 재래 농산물 가운데 어떤 것을 선택할지 도움을 주고, 어느 농 산물을 유기농으로 구입할지 알려주기 위한 것”이라고 말했다. 이에 대해 캘 리포니아 농업사무연맹(CFBF)의 데 이브 크란츠 대변인은 “과일과 채소 의 농약 잔류치는 ‘극소량’으로, 과일 과 채소를 섭취함으로써 얻는 혜택이 더 크다”고 주장했다.

다. 워싱턴 대학과 미국 피부과 전문 지의 연구에 따르면, 운전석이 왼쪽에 있는 차량을 운전하는 경우 신체의 왼 쪽 부분이 자외 선에 노출되기 때문에 신체 오 른쪽의 피부 암 발생률이 55% 높아지는 것으 로 나타났다. 흑 색증 발생 가능 성은 52%, 촉각 세포암 발생률은 53% 높아진다.

1986년 호주의 한 연구에서는

신체의 오른쪽에 암 발생률이 높은 것 으로 나타났는데, 호주는 운전석이 오 른쪽에 위치하기 때문이라고 밝혔다.

운석에서 생명체 증거 발견

인류가 우주에서 유일한 생명체가 아 닐 가능성이 더욱 높아졌다. 지구 밖 에 인류와는 또 다른 생명체가 존재한 다는 증거가 포착된 것. 지구로 날아 든 운석에서 최근 생명체 진화의 씨앗 이라고 할 수 있는 성분이 검출됐다.

2000년 1월 캐나다 브리티시컬럼비아 에 사는 한 남성은 하늘에서 불이 번 쩍 하는 장면을 보고 운석이 지구 대 기에서 폭발했다는 걸 감지했다. 그는 꽁꽁 언 타기시 호수 위를 뒤져 작은 조각으로 부서진 85g짜리 운석파편을 찾아냈다. 이 남성은 운석을 냉장고 에 잘 보관했다가 5년 뒤 연구팀에 75 만 달러(8억 3300만원)을 받고 팔았 다. 평범하게 보였던 이 돌멩이가 사 실 우주 생명체 진화의 증거물이었던 것. 앨버타 대학 연구진에 따르면 유 기화합물인 운석에서 생명체를 꽃피
