The Importance of Signage in OTC Stores

Signage –

signs, posters and pictures placed in several areas of the OTC store will help to get plus sales and will show that your store is well organized, attractive and welcoming to your customers. In most cases the customer coming into an OTC store will have one objective in mind. She wants to purchase needed items – conditioner, shampoo, perhaps a relaxer or hair color. Once she finds her items she will go to the counter, check out and leave the store.

This is the point at which signage in your store makes a difference and can get this customer to buy more than what she actually came in for. A sign that says “See Our New Item Section,” “Close out Item – Great Prices,” “Holiday Specials,” etc. will in most cases entice the customer to take a look at what it is offering.

Store signage can make your store a “shopping center” rather than a convenient store for buying only what a customer needs. Chances are that she will buy some items that she may not have thought about and will be happy she found them. Signage in the OTC is an inexpensive way of advertising what you have to offer. If done properly it will bring you extra sales and a customer who will want to come back to your store again for a great shopping experience.

Samples of various types of signage for OTC stores MOST IMPORTANT – The most important sign you need to have in a prominent, store-front place is: “Welcome to our store – We appreciate your business.”

NEW ITEM SECTION – Every OTC store will benefit from developing a new item section with appropriate signage where they can place new items for a reasonable period of time – 45 to 60 days.

Then the customer can readily see new products that have come to the market place.

CONSUMER VALUE SECTION – This department would have bonus sizes, combo packs and value packs. Items can be rotated according to availability, utilizing the space by taking older items out and putting newer ones in.

Skin Care Section – This is an under developed department that tends to be set up in an unorganized way and the customer doesn’t gravitate to the companion items. All items within a brand should be set up together, with the lead item first and other same-brand items next to it. Your wholesaler can help you in choosing the right mix of products based on the size of your store and your market trade area.

CLOSE OUT SECTION – This section should be located at the back of the store as opposed to the front so that customers have to go through the store to get to it. Close outs could be for discontinued items, old packaging, slightly damaged packaging but usable products, etc.

This could be an orderly place to flush out items that are not planned for using in your regular future inventory. A sign at the front of the store directing customers to this section will ensure they travel there.

MEN’S PRODUCTS SECTION – Many women shop for the men in their lives and a men’s section should be set up with signage.

Some examples of items to be put here are shaving products and companion items such as brushes, after shave lotions, colognes, etc.

Hair brushes, men’s touch up color products and bump products can also be shown.

HAIR SECTION – Hair is a very large category. You need to be sure that you have adequate supplies for your customer base and that you have the accessory and application items that are designed especially for hair extensions and attachments. You should also carry a selection of wigs, from lower priced artificial to the higher priced human hair wigs.

OVERHEAD SINAGE – It is very important to have signage overhead in each aisle with the names of the product categories so that your customers will be able to find the products they are looking for. There is nothing more frustrating for a shopper than to walk up and down the aisles looking for a certain category of items and unable to find it. Walk into a supermarket and look at the overhead signage – all categories are listed for the convenience of customers.

Your store, no matter how large or small, should have overhead signage with category listings.

Using signage can improve your store, making it a pleasant place to shop and ultimately increase your sales and customer base. We are currently in an economic slump and many businesses of all types are complaining of slow sales growth. The beauty business is unique in that even in hard times women still want to look their best and take care of their hair and skin. They may not be able to buy expensive clothes or go on vacations, but they can spend a little money on themselves so that they can look and feel better.

Take the time to make your store a nice place to shop. A smile and a nice greeting go a long way to form a good relationship with your customer. May we all enjoy a happy, healthy and prosperous 2012.

HAIR COLOR & ACCESSORIES – Guidance will be needed from your distributor as to what the mix in a hair color section should be. Permanent, semi-permanent, temporary spray color, application bowls, brushes and bottles, peroxide, bleach, developers, hair color re-newers, treatments, capes, smocks, plastic gloves and caps should all be placed in this section.

HAIR APPLIANCES – There is a wide range of hair appliances and you have customers who want the better appliances and are willing to pay the price if they understand the difference of the various products. Your store personnel need to know this information and you can get it from your wholesaler.

If your customers have salons you should definitely carry some of the higher end hair appliances and they should be displayed on a top shelf. Hair appliance sections should include electric and nonelectric straightening combs, curling irons, blow dryers, flat irons, clippers, stoves, organizers, shears, etc.

It’s tradition. Every year as new calendars are hung and the habit of writing last year’s date on documents is struggled to be broken, people everywhere evaluate their lives. They focus on what they can do to be healthier, wealthier and ultimately happier with themselves. We here at OTC Beauty Magazine feel that along with this self-examination, it is just as important to take time to make New Year’s resolutions for your beauty business as well. Why you might ask? We’ve tapped into the knowledge of an industry insider to find out.

Why are making beauty business resolutions important for OTC beauty store owners? How can they benefit from planning ahead and making these vows for the new year?

“Like everything, if you don’t have a plan most things will not get done. OTC stores—from the small to the super stores—we call on everyone. In the past it was OK just to see it, feel it, buy it and put it on your shelves with a prayer that you have bought the right items.” Now it might not be the same case.

“In my opinion it’s like having a fine dinning experience; it does not just happen. Good food is really not enough; it’s in the presentation. Stores must take the extra effort to showcase new items. For example, I am the worst at walking into a men’s dept store and buying clothes, but if I walk in and see the outfit all put together on the display, showing me how it all goes together, it’s a slam dunk…sold.

OTC stores must make a plan around what is going to be the point of purchase. Plan what, when and where to show and sell, or hide and keep.

I grew up in a small town café and was taught at a very young age that good food alone won’t bring back the customers. You must show them you care. My daddy always said, ‘No one cares how much you know until they know how much you care.’

In our beauty industry anyone can take advantage of all the support material manufacturers make available to help create the mood for making the sell. Pick the reason and the season to help yourself create the proper display for doing what is best for your business.

Sell through. For me all the excitement comes from the re-order, not just the sell in.”

뷰티 사업 기획안이다 해마다 새해 달력을 걸어 놓고도 여전히 습관처럼 모든 서류에는 지난 해로 기록하는 버릇을 고치려 애쓰며, 우리의 인생 이모 저모를 점검해보게 된다. 사람들은 보다 건강하고 부유하고 아주 행복하기 위한 것에만 집중한다. 같은 의미로 우리는 여기 OTC 뷰티 매거진에서 자가 진단을 해보려 한다. 이것은 뷰티 사업의 신년 기획안 작성을 위한 시간을 갖는다는 의미에서도 아주 중요한 부분이다. 왜 이렇게 물어볼까? 우리는 뷰티 사업에 관한 보다 깊이 있는 지식을 알아보려는 것이다.

뷰티 사업 기획안 작성이 OTC 뷰티 점주들에게 왜 중요한 것인가? 새해를 대비해 미리 기획을 하고, 나름대로 서약과도 같은 계획안을 작성하는 것이 그들에게 어떤 이익을 가져다 주는가? 모든 것에서 그렇듯이, 계획을 세우지 않은 일들은 제대로 매듭이 지어지지 않는다. 작은 매장에서부터 대규모 매장에 이르기까지 전체 OTC 매장에게 전한다. 과거에는 그저 제품을 직접 보고 느끼고 구매를 결정했다. 그렇게 구입한 물건을 내 집 선반 위에 올려 놓고 제대로 샀으려니 생각하는 걸로 충분했다. 그러나 지금은 경우가 다르다. 개인적인 견해로, 그것은 고급 식당에서의 경험과도 같다고 본다. 고급 식당에서의 멋진 식사란 그냥 단순한 것이 아니다. 단지 좋은 음식만으로는 부족하다. 어떻게 차려져서 멋지게 보여지느냐하는 것이다. 매장들은 신제품 홍보를 위한 쇼케이스에 더욱 더 많은 노력을 쏟아야한다. 예를 들어, 나는 백화점 남성복 매장을 걸어다니며 이것 저것 옷을 구매하는 데는 아주 서툴다. 그러나 머리부터 발끝까지 전체적으로 잘 코디해서 진열해 놓은 옷들을 직접 보게되면, 두 번 생각할 여지없이 바로 구매해버린다.

OTC 매장들은 무엇이 구매의 초점이 되는냐에 대한 계획을 세워야만 한다. 언제 어디에서 어떤 제품을 선보이고 팔 것인지, 계속 둘 것인지 거둬들일 것인지에 대한 계획을 세워라. 나는 조그마한 동네의 식당에서 자랐다. 그리고 이미 어린 나이에 단지 좋은 음식만으로는 손님들을 다시 찾게 할 수 없다는 것을 배웠다. 우리가 정성을 기울이는 것을 고객들에게 보여줘야한다. 아버지께서는 늘 말씀하셨다. “사람들은 네가 얼마나 정성을 쏟는지 알기 전까지는, 아무도 네가 얼마나 알고 있는지에는 신경쓰지 않는다.” 우리 뷰티 업계에서는 누구든 제조사가 판매 분위기 조성을 위해 제공할 수 있는 모든 지원 자료를 활용할 수 있다. 당신의 매장이 최대한의 성과를 올릴 수 있도록, 적절한 디스플레이를 하고자하는 이유와 시즌을 먼저 결정하라. 그리고 판매고를 올려라. 나를 더욱 신나게 만드는 것은 그저 판매에만 그치는 것이 아니라 추가 주문이 이뤄지는 것이다.

어떤 제품인가?

What is it?

Pomades are petrolatum based products used to hold hair in place while giving it a shiny appearance. They are often referred to as hair grease or hair wax. Pomades have been a mainstay of hair styling since the beginning of time.

The word pomade is derived from the French word “pommade”, which means ointment. The product, originally made of bear or goose grease, is normally made from a combination of petroleum, mineral oil and wax.

Pomades were originally designed to both hold styles in place and add fragrance to the hair. Early pomades included very high levels of perfume. In the early twenties pomade became a very popular product with men and women of all races. The short, wavy styles of the ‘20s were the perfect match for the strong holding waxes. Many brands that are currently on the market were started in this era, including: Murray’s Superior Hair Dressing, Sweet Georgia Brown, Royal Crown, Tuxedo Club and several others.

Using the Product

A unique aspect of pomade is that men and women of all races use the exact same product to style their hair. Identical ingredients and formulas can be found anywhere from dollar stores to the highest end salons. This product is undoubtedly one that transcends all cultural and sociological boundaries.

Many early celebrities endorsed pomades. Most notably, boxer Joe Louis was a spokesperson for Murray’s prior to releasing his own pomade. Dancer and entertainer Bill Robinson, also known as Mr. Bojangles, had his own pomade as well.

As time went on, the versatility of pomade always found a place with the current generation. The fifties produced pompadours and ducktails; the sixties produced the short “Mad Men” styles.

The eighties added high-tops, spikes and fades. The short closecropped cut has always been current. A resurgence of this style can be seen often on TV and in fashion ads. The African-American male consumer has always relied on pomade for their grooming needs, with styles ranging from short and tight to 360 waves.

Waves are formed by repeatedly brushing the strong holding product into the hair. The brushing brings out the natural wave pattern of the hair and the wax holds it in place.

포마드는 바세린을 기초로한 제품으로, 손질된 헤어 스타일을 고정시키는 동시에 모발에 광택과 윤기를 제공한다. 헤어 그리스나 헤어 왁스로 종종 불리기도 하는 포마드는 헤어 스타일링의 시작과 함께 오랜 시간 대들보 역할을 해왔다. 포마드는 연고라는 뜻의 프랑스어 “Pommade”에서 그 기원을 찾을 수 있는데, 원래는 곰이나 거위의 기름으로 만들던 것이, 세월이 바뀌면서 석유와 미네랄 오일, 왁스를 조합해서 제조하는 방법으로 바뀐 것이다.

원래 포마드는 헤어스타일을 고정함과 동시에 모발의 냄새를 좋게하려는 목적으로 고안되었다. 초기의 포마드는 상당량의 향수가 포함되어 있다. 20세기 초에 와서 포마드는 인종에 상관없이 남여 모두에게 매우 인기 있는 제품이 되었다.

20세기의 짧고 웨이브한 스타일은 강한 고정 기능을 가진 왁스와 아주 잘 맞는다. Murray’s Superior Hair Dressing, Sweet Georgia Brown, Royal Crown, Tuxedo Club 등 현재 포마드 제품의 시장 점유율이 높은 대부분의 브랜드들이 바로 이 때부터 시작된 것이다.

제품 사용 포마드의 특별한 점이라면, 인종에 상관없이 남여 모두 헤어 스타일링을 위해서 같은 제품을 사용한다는 것이다. 달러스토어부터 최고급 미용실까지 어디서나 동일한 성분의 제품을 찾아볼 수 있다. 포마드는 의심의 여지없이 모든 문화와 사회적 경계를 초월하는 제품이다.

초기의 많은 연예인들이 포마드를 지지했는데, 대표적인 인물로는 권투 선수인 Joe Louis가 있다. 그는 자신의 상표로 포마드를 출시하기 전까지 Murray사의 대변인이었다. Mr. Bojangles로 잘 알려진 탭댄서이자 배우인 Bill Robinson 역시 자신의 포마드 브랜드를 갖고 있었다.

Finished Product Formulation and Packaging

One ingredient in pomade that is currently very popular is beeswax. Beeswax products are manufactured in a similar way to traditional pomades. What differentiates this product is that beeswax has a lower melting point than traditional wax, which makes it easier to soften and apply to the hair. Despite this difference, it cools quickly and holds strong. This is very popular with men and women that wear braids, twists and dreadlocks.

In the early ‘80s, fashion icon Christiaan was one of the first to introduce the high fashion world to pomade, while at Vogue magazine. The product became a vital part of every hairstylist’s bag. The ability to re-style the hair without removing the product or washing the hair increased the efficiency of the stylist. Most gels and hairsprays have a tendency to dry out and make the hair feel hard or crunchy; pomade keeps the hair soft and manageable.

Traditional pomades are still packaged in metal cans. Due to the product’s thickness and high melting point, many early users put the can directly onto the stovetop to help soften the contents and allow easier application to the hair. Unfortunately, many manufacturers have abandoned this tradition and have recently converted to plastic jars to save costs.

Currently, many manufacturers blend the oil and wax with other ingredients, such as water and emulsifiers, to help with shampooing the product out of the hair. The term pomade has now evolved to mean any solid, heavyweight styling product, with descriptions including: pastes, glues, putty, muds, waxes and molding products. With so much variety within its classification it’s no wonder why pomades are so prominent in this industry.

Looking Ahead

Over the years pomades have evolved from a simple, highly perfumed wax in a metal can to the array of specialized styling products that exist today. Just like any other item in your store, it will most likely continue adapting to the needs of consumers. No matter what the future holds for pomade— whether new packaging and presentation, product make-up or even uses—be sure to keep your shelves well-stocked and stay updated with the news of these updates.

In conclusion, pomades are a staple product in every beauty supply store. With its appeal to both men and women of all ethnicities, it’s impossible to pin point one main consumer.

This fact alone makes it a valuable product to carry, especially in many varieties. That way, customers can get the selection they want and find exactly the product they need each time they shop.

고정 기능이 강력한 제품을 머리에 바르고 여러번 반복해서 빗질해주면 웨이브가 만들어진다. 빗질을 하면 자연스러운 모발의 웨이브 형태가 만들어지는데, 이것을 왁스로 고정시키면 된다.

구성 성분과 포장 포마드에 함유된 성분 중 현재 가장 대중적인 것은 비왁스(beeswax) 이다. 비왁스 제품은 전통적인 포마드와 유사한 방식으로 제조된다. 다른 점이 있다면, 좀 더 부드럽고 쉽게 머리에 바를 수 있는 전통적인 왁스에 비해 비왁스가 더 낮은 융점(녹는점)을 갖는다는 것이다. 이런 차이점에도 불구하고, 비왁스는 빨리 마르고 강력한 고정 기능을 가진다. 그래서 땋은 머리나 드레드 헤어 스타일의 남성과 여성 모두에게 매우 인기가 있다.

80년대 초반의 패션 아이콘이었던 Christiaan은 보그 잡지를 통해서 하이 패션계에 포마드를 처음으로 소개했고, 제품은 모든 헤어스타일리스트 가방의 필수품이 되었다. 스타일 보정을 위해서 닦아내거나 머리를 감을 필요없이 손쉽게 사용할 수 있다는 점에서 스타일리스트 일의 효율성을 높여주었다. 대부분의 헤어젤이나 스프레이는 쉽게 말라 굳어버리는 경향이 있어서 모발을 딱딱하게 만드는 반면, 포마드는 모발을 부드러운 상태에서 손질할 수 있도록 유지해준다.

전통적인 포마드는 여전히 금속 캔용기에 포장된다. 제품의 농도나 높은 융점때문에, 초기의 많은 사용자들은 캔을 통째로 스토브 위에 바로 올려서 내용물이 부드러워지게 만들었는데, 이렇게하면 머리에 바르기가 더 수월했기 때문이다. 불행히도 많은 제조사들은 이런 전통 방식을 포기하고 플라스틱으로 용기를 바꿔서 제조 원가를 낮추려한다.

Gear up for a Successful New Year

any retailers have experienced a decrease in sales with the downward turn of the economy.

Some find it difficult to keep business going and trying to attract new customers brings a new challenge—they seem few and far in between. People are still spending money, but not in large sums as once before. Consumers are looking for value and incentives to make shopping with limited resources exciting and fulfilling. Here are a few simple ways to create an added value shopping experience for your customers without having to make a heavy investment.

Have Promotional Calendar Events

Once a month have a sale on one item in the store and promote it on your window or door so customers see it as soon as they come in. Have a group of the promotional item at the register just to reiterate the promotion before the customer has completed their transaction. Preplan your promotion for upcoming holidays including Valentine’s Day, Easter, Mother’s Day, etc. Store traffic usually increases on days leading up to the holiday and it is best to hold promotions three consecutive days before, and on, the day of the holiday.

Partner with hair care companies to schedule in-store sampling on your busiest day of the week every other month. Have a representative from the company to come in for a day and greet customers as they enter the store. Have him or her available to give expert advice regarding hair care. You can even partner with a multitude of beauty companies-skin, cosmetics, accessories, men’s care, etc. Encompass the entire beauty supply business and make it educational. Knowing about products will help your customers and employees in the long run.

Sampling is always exciting because everyone likes free products. It can also prompt more sales on return visits.

Giveaways

Have a hair care giveaway twice a year or every quarter. Allow customers who make a purchase over $10 to sign up for a product giveaway and select the winner at the end of the month.

Create as sign that can be displayed in the store to encourage people to ask about the details and also have a basket of the giveaway already prepared so that they can see what they would win. Make the giveaway appealing by adding a variety of things: wet goods, combs, brushes, styling tools, etc.

Find out what your customers really want

My friend David Garfinkel, a copy writing genius, says there are five important answers you need to get from your customers, directly or indirectly.

1. What do you like about buying from us?

2. Why did you buy from us in the first place?

3. What problems did you have before you bought from us?

4. How did we help you solve those problems?

5. How are things better for you now?

“That last answer,” he says, “is very important. It’s what a positive result looks like to a real customer, and it’s going to look the same to your other customers and prospects when you tell them about it.”

By getting to know your customers on this level you can easily determine in what ways to serve them better. As a result of gaining this knowledge, your business will flourish.

Make your customers feel special and appreciated

Great customer service is no longer good enough. We have to exceed the consumers’ expectations. One individual who knew this before anyone else is Gary Richter. He runs a small boutique bank in Naples, Fla. At 5:20 one Friday afternoon, the bank received a call from an elderly woman who needed to cash a $200 check. The bank closed at 5:30 p.m., and she was 20 minutes away. Many of us would say, “Of course, please come over, we’ll stay open for you.” But Gary’s bank believes in giving exceptional service. One of their employees delivered her $200 on his way home and picked up her endorsed check.

It turned out that the woman had her extensive financial holdings at a large national bank. After this positive experience with Gary’s bank, she moved all her assets and investments to his bank.

Gary’s bank continues to focus on superior customer service. “I tell my employees, if we roll out the red carpet for a billionaire, they won’t even notice. If we roll it out for millionaires, they expect it. If we roll out the red carpet for thousandaires, they appreciate it. And if we roll out the red carpet for hundredaires, they tell everybody they know.” And you can take that to the bank. In the first six years since the bank opened, it grew from 16 to 180 employees and from $6 million in assets to $330 million.

Treating your customers in this special way will keep them coming back week after week.

There are really only two types of customers: those who already know and love you, and those who never heard of you. All businesses spend money trying to get new customers, but money spent keeping current customers does double duty. Pamper them, keep in touch with them and acknowledge their needs; it’s cheaper and more effective than getting new ones. Remember, an unhappy former customer will talk about you and cost you business. A happy current customer will talk about you and get you new business. People want to do business with people who appreciate them and look out for them.

No one ever lost customers by treating them with appreciation, consideration, and integrity. So the next time someone walks through the doors of your store, offer them a friendly smile, ask how they are doing and be available to help point them in the direction of their desired purchase. It is not your customer’s job to know how you can serve them. It is your job to give them options and choices.

Soul of the South F

orward thinking marketers are setting their sites on the South. The migration of black Americans from the South to the north has been well documented in “The Warmth of Other Suns: the Epic Story of America’s Great Migration” in which the Pulitzer Prize winner Isabel Wilkerson wrote about the exodus of black Americans from the South to the north between 1915 and 1970 in the hopes of a better life. But now demographers are talking about a “retromigration,” or the return of many African-Americans to southern cities like Jacksonville, Fla.; Memphis, Tenn.; and Charlotte, N.C. Many of these southern cities have black mayors. Many have an association with Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

Atlanta, which has Spelman, Morehouse and Clark Atlanta, is just one example. There is even a “Soul of the South Network” launching this year; the 24-hour regional broadcast network targeting African-American viewers in the South will carry a mix of news, entertainment, sports and cultural programming.

“Many young blacks are leaving Northern cities and returning to the Sun Belt,” said demographer William Fey in a USA Today newspaper report. He notes motivating factors include warmer weather and a return to be closer to friends, relatives and extended family who never left or who have also returned. Not only are blacks moving to the South as income and education increase, they are moving out of urban areas and into suburbs. That is why the population of metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs), and not just city or urban centers, need to be considered in reaching black Americans in southern states.

In this first of a three part series, we will highlight some of the key southern cities where black populations are important. In the third article we will discuss the phenomenon of “Up South.” These are cities like Chicago, Philadelphia and Detroit where black culture is very much a part of life.

There is always a preferred time to promote each product you offer!

Timing is very important. You really must begin planning at least three to six months in advance of each promotion. If you want to sell more gift certificates, then plan to start promoting them at least six weeks prior to Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and the year-end holidays. Hair color and hair extensions are great to promote any time of year! Hair removal is perfect to promote before and during the warmest seasons each year. If you want to promote ‘Prom Packages’ in the spring with products for manicures, pedicures, upstyles, hair ornaments and makeup applications you must start to run advertisements and put up your in-store merchandising materials four to eight weeks prior to the local proms.

Seasonal Retail Product Promotions

Be sure to work with your beauty care manufacturers to promote bi-monthly, holiday and seasonal retail product offerings. They will often offer special promotionally themed posters, counter cards, merchandising materials, samples and incentive contests that you and your staff should be ready to work with.

Seasonal Marketing Calendars

Start to again explore your new ‘Annual Marketing Calendar’ where you can effectively promote what you want to each season, rather than just opening your beauty store doors for business each day. You really only need six marketing campaigns per year.

Passion fuels everything good about a person or an organization, so why is it so hard to find people that are passionate about their jobs or the product or service they sell?

In most organizations, every leader can name a few of their great employees or bosses that have immense passion and will state 100 percent of the time they wish that all of their employees would have that same passion. The same can be said of employees who wish their leader had more passion. Although not everybody can be passionate about their job or their business because some people just do not follow their passion (rather they follow a paycheck), as a leader one should strive to have most employees passionate about what they do. This is not an easy concept, but most things that make people and organizations great are not easy – that is why they are great. There are a few things that individuals and leaders can do to make passion a mandatory part of their culture.

Make passion a job requirement

Some could argue that passion and attitude are subjective and cannot be measured or fairly managed, which could be true in some cases.

Most leaders can look at their team and easily identify the members that are passionate about their career and the organization, and in almost every case, those people are the most successful. The leader’s job is to help those without passion find it in their current role or help them find a role within the organization they can be passionate about.

If a leader wants their entire organization to be passionate about their job, they must make it mandatory. How serious should a leader be about making passion mandatory? Should a leader fire their top performer if they lack passion and do not have a desire to be better regardless of their results? In most cases they won’t, but in time that top performer’s results may decline as the results catch up with their lack of passion.

Encourage passion

Passion is not an emotion that is taught, rather it is the result of a person doing the right job or having the right career. Leaders do not necessarily have to mandate passion out of each person like being told to get to work on time, but they should recognize those individuals that lack the passion and strive to help them find it in their position. In today’s economy it is not always enough to do a good job or know your business. A person and organization must have the passion to pass on to others. Passion is the fuel for an organization’s success no matter what industry, region or economy one is in.

nlike what most people believe, dealing with natural Afro centric hair is not a difficult task. The most difficult task is dealing with misconceptions that we have regarded as facts for so long that they became an accepted reality for many of us.

Norm versus normal

Common misconceptions about Afro hairstyles being hard to manage and undesirable did not just appear out of the blue one day.

A closer look will tell you that African-American hair routines—the way it is combed, washed and styled—is merely based on a straight hair care model. This is hardly a surprise. Straight hair has been a dominating beauty standard in our society for such a long time that it became the norm and we unconsciously adopted it as a model for all hair types. However, the standards for straight hair are not necessarily correct or healthy for kinky hair. By using these standards as a norm for all other hair types, we confuse the norm with what is not normal.

This pattern has occurred for centuries throughout history and we must clear up this contradiction. Your hair does not need to be straight to be beautiful; beautiful hair comes in all textures and in all lengths. Additionally, Afro centric hair responds differently to styling designed for straight hair and therefore needs its own routines, but that does not imply that Afro hair is unmanageable, bad or abnormal. Before we get into African-American hair routines, let’s first try to clear up some other stubborn misconceptions.

Afro centric hair cannot grow long

It is still a pervasive belief that Afro centric hair can’t grow long.

When you offer a cursory look around you hardly see women of color with natural long hair. This is deceiving because naturally straight hair is compared to chemically straightened hair. Hair that is chemically treated to look straight has been through numerous processes to keep it straight. It is very likely that blow drying, press and/or curling and flat ironing are also done on a regular basis to keep the hair straight. These treatments can cause split ends that sooner or later break off, resulting in the misconception of little or no hair growth from the scalp. In reality, the problem is hair loss on the ends. This makes the comparison unfair because naturally straight hair does not need all the unhealthy treatments to keep the stands straight.

흑인들의 선천적인 모발은 뜻대로 손질되지 않고 관리도 힘들다는 보편적인 오해는 그저 어느 날 문득 생겨난 것이 아니다. 미국 흑인들이 머리를 감고 빗질하고 손질하는 것을 가까이서 들여다 본 사람들은 그냥 보통 생머리를 손질하는 것과 크게 차이가 없다는 것을 알게 될 것이다. 별로 놀랄 것도 없다. 우리 사회에서 긴 생머리는 아주 오래동안 지배적인 미의 기준으로 정형화되었고, 우리는 무의식적으로 그것을 전체 모발 타입의 모델로 받아들였던 것이다. 그러나 긴생머리를 위한 기준들이 곱슬머리에도 반드시 옳거나 건강한 방법은 아니다.

이러한 기준들을 전체 모발 타입의 기준으로 사용한다면, 우리는 표준과 표준이 아닌 것에 대한 혼동을 겪게 된다. 역사적으로 지난 수세기 동안 이루어진 이러한 모순과 오해를 이제는 해결해야만 한다. 당신의 머리카락이 생머리여야만 아름다운 것은 아니다. 아름다운 모발은 어떤 머릿결이나 길이에서도 모두 가능하다. 덧붙이자면, 흑인들의 모발은 생머리와는 다른 방법으로 손질하게 되어 있다. 그러므로 그들만의 손질 방법이 필요한 것이다. 그렇다고해서 흑인들의 모발이 나쁘고 비정상적이거나 다루기 매우 힘들다는 의미를 내포하는 것은 아니다. 미국 흑인들의 모발 관리 방법을 알아보기 전에, 먼저 몇가지 다른 고질적인 오해부터 풀어보자.

흑인들의 머리카락은 길게 자라지 않는다

A closer look will show that African-American women with very long hair usually wear natural hairstyles like dreadlocks.

To make a fair comparison, compare long, natural, straight hair to naturally cultivated dreadlocks. The long dreadlocked hair may appear to be shorter simply due to the natural curl pattern. Do you still believe that African-American hair cannot grow long?

There is nothing like natural hair, but if the hair needs a break or time to recover, extensions or weaves are good choices.

Whether hair needs recovery from former abuse or from a hairstyle gone wrong, these methods will allow for natural, undisturbed hair growth if the job is done right.

A good weave will add length and fullness to one’s hair while protecting it. The same goes for extensions that are correctly braided into one’s hair. Most hair grows best if left alone. It is important to understand that if the hair is braided too tight, this can cause permanent hair loss from the scalp (Tension Alopecia).

If the hair is well protected by extensions or a weave, the hair has a chance to grow undisturbed, free from pulling and environmental threats like the sun. The advantage of weaves and extensions is really that they can wear any hairstyle while growing their own hair.

Natural afro centric hair is hard to manage

The misconception that Afro centric hair is hard to manage is based on the customs of daily combing and daily styling one’s hair. Natural Afro centric hair does not need combing or styling everyday because hairstyles stay unimpaired for at least one week on average. In addition, most combs are unsuitable for natural Afro centric hair. That means being able to quickly comb through the hair on a daily basis cannot be used as a standard to define Afro hair as “hard to manage.” This would be like defining straight hair as unmanageable because it is difficult to braid and it can hardly keep a braid, cornrow or curl. It doesn’t make sense, does it?

Straightening afro centric hair makes hair care easier

It may seem easy to comb through and style straightened hair on a daily basis, but it certainly is not easier to care for relaxed hair.

Contrary to popular belief, it is very high maintenance. In fact, chemically altered hair is more difficult to care for than natural hair because of chemical damage. Relaxers first deteriorate the outer layer (cuticle) of a hair strand and then subsequently break the hair inner structure so that the hair can become straight. This makes the hair more vulnerable.

Relaxers not only make it harder to maintain healthy hair, they also limit lifestyles. To maintain a straight and healthy looking hairstyle, customers condition, roller set, blow dry, wrap or flat iron hair, which can cause hair loss as described earlier in this article.

After all efforts put into creating a hairstyle, they do everything to keep it over time and limit activities that will not hinder the style. They do not exercise because perspiration causes premature reversion of the hair, as does swimming and a lot of other outdoor activities. The truth is, chemicals really do not make life easier and they make it harder to maintain healthy hair.

What causes noticeable hair loss when extensions and braids are removed

The human head loses up to 100 strands of hair each day due to normal attrition as the hair approaches the end of its normal life span of five to seven years. When extensions are attached, the natural elimination of hair is trapped instead of falling away naturally and unnoticeably. When the extensions are taken out, the trapped hair is released all at once instead of a little at a time unnoticed.

Natural african hair is difficult to style

Styling natural hair is not difficult at all.

It may take some time getting used to like when customers first learned to roller set, wrap, blow dry or hot iron their hair, but natural hair is no more difficult than that.

Another misconception about Afro centric hair is that the Afro scalp produces less natural scalp oils (sebum) then those from most other cultures.

This is based on a common compliant of natural oily build up on straight hair that has to be shampooed off daily. Afro centric hair will not have that much oily build up in a week, and sometimes not at all. The fact is that African-American scalps and skin produce up to three times as much sebum then most other cultures, with little or no build-up on the hair.

The reason for this is that Afro centric hair has up to five times as much bonding and cells in each hair shaft then others, resulting in Afro centric hair capable of absorbing up to five times as much oils. Hair care products designed for African-American consumers contain more oils then those for the general market. Cosmetics aimed at the Afro centric consumer contain less oil for the same but opposite reasons, because Afro centric skin is oilier due to little or no hair to absorb it.

Conclusion

익스텐션을 제거할 때와 땋은 머리를 풀 경우, 어떤 것이 더 많은 모발 손실을 가져 오는가?

인간의 머리는 평균 5-7년 정도의 수명을 가진 머리카락의 자연스러운 마모로 매일 100가닥 정도의 머리카락이 빠진다. 익스텐션을 붙이면, 우리가 인식하지 못하는 사이에 자연스럽게 빠지는 머리카락들이 한꺼번에 붙잡혀 있다가,익스텐션을 제거할 경우 한꺼번에 빠지게 되는 것이다. 선천적인 흑인들의 모발은 스타일이 힘들다.

내추럴 헤어를 손질하는 것은 전혀 어렵지 않다. 고객들이 처음에 롤 세트나 드라이어, 아이언 손질 방법을 배워서 익숙해질 때까지는 약간 시간이 걸린다. 그러나 내추럴 헤어는 이보다도 쉽게 손질할 수가 있다.

OTC Beauty Magazine (OTC): Please provide us with a brief description of Ampro’s history. How has tradition been nurtured over the years?

Camille Wright (CW): Ampro was founded in 1947 by Irvin Lansky, a man with a great head for business.

Although he’s no longer with us, his mark is ever present. Ampro is still owned and operated by the family of Mr. Lansky, even his grandchildren come in to work everyday.

The individuals who work at Ampro consider this place a family. We respect each other and work together to give our consumers great products at a value price. It’s something in which we all believe. That’s the tradition I think has been nurtured over the years. Those who do the hiring, do so with the family in mind.

Ampro employees are the best, brightest and most amicable of his or her field.

OTC: How is Ampro structured? Briefly describe the divisions that make up the company.

CW: Ampro is comprised of three basic entities: the Corporate Office, the Manufacturing Facility and the Distribution Center. We all work cooperatively—meeting often—to ensure adequate communication.

OTC: What all types of products does Ampro offer and how can stores benefit by carrying them?

CW: It’s well known that we’re the makers of America’s #1 gel and, as we’ve seen with our latest offerings, Shine ‘n Jam Conditioning Gel and HoneyBeez Styling Beeswax, consumers love our products!

Therefore, part of our goal for 2012 is to help our consumers realize that we make much more. Like our tag line says, “From root to tip, we’ve got you covered!” We make the pre-crème many stylists prefer, mild texturizers (for men and women), shampoos, conditioners, hair polishers, oil sheens, wrap/setting lotion, beeswax, marcel wax, pressing oil and vitamin E oil. We even have a skin care line called Bump Repair (for men and women).

The benefit of carrying our complete line is that people know and trust our brand. Many don’t have to be “sold” on it. They try it because it says “Ampro Pro Styl.”

They buy it again because it works and didn’t break their bank!

OTC: What indicated a need for your products within the beauty industry? What differentiates them from the competition?

CW: When our gels were created, there was no reliable alternative.

What keeps them a staple in the industry is the fact that they are trusted and valued by the consumer. For that reason, we’ve continued to extend the line to offer more products about which our consumers can feel the same way. The fact is that consumers need a brand they can trust and consumers trust Ampro. That’s what differentiates us from the competition. We’re not out to get their money; we’re here to win and keep their trust.

OTC: What trend have you seen grow the most recently and how has Ampro met consumer demand for it?

CW: Men and women have been “going natural” for the past few years. I wouldn’t consider it a trend because it’s here to stay. What’s trendy is how individuals, relaxed or natural, are styling their hair.

As we’ve seen before, “the bigger the hair, the better the style.”

People are moving away from the “tamed” looks and are allowing their hair to “roam free.” I find it refreshing! The hair “shell” has been broken.

The affordability and reliability of Ampro Pro Styl products helps individuals achieve their personal style and change it up at will. We work hard to not only manufacture products that help people reach their hair goals and dreams, but to also keep them in reach of their budget so everyone can join this new hair revolution!

OTC: Does your company have any big plans in store for 2012?

CW: Of course! In 2012, we’ll start rolling out our new brand look. Finally, upon first glance consumers will recognize the fullness of our product line.

We recently released our new Olive Oil Styling Gel in November 2011 and it’s being received very well all over. Ampro will continue to market and advertise it throughout 2012. We’re very excited. It’s truly the most moisturizing gel we’ve ever made.

Lastly, we are extending our award winning Shine ‘n Jam line with the new Silk Edges product.

Look for us to start advertising it very soon.

OTC: From a store owner’s perspective, what is the easiest aspect of doing business with Ampro?

CW: We are the no hassle manufacturer. At Ampro, we work diligently to keep up with the demand for our products.

“Out-of-stocks” are out of the question. Our production department meets regularly to make sure our daily schedule stays ahead of our orders.

OTC: What feedback have you gotten from OTC stores that currently carry your products?

CW: I find myself in half a dozen beauty supply stores two or three times a week. Feedback, to me is very important. While I’m out doing my “foursquare thing,” I check into stores, check our shelves and converse with store owners. Most of what I hear about our brand is positive.

OTC: 매장 운영자의 입장으로 볼 때, Ampro와의 제품 거래에 있어서 어떤 측면을 제일 먼저 기대할 수 있을까요?

CW: 한마디로 저희 Ampro는 문제나 골치거리가 없는 제조사입니다. 제품의 수요를 맞추기 위해 아주 열심히 생산에 임합니다. 물량이 부족하거나 없다는 건 있을 수 없는 말입니다. 저희 생산부는 모든 주문의 생산 일정을 미리 확인해서 정확하게 맞추고 있습니다.

OTC: 현재 귀사의 제품을 취급하고 있는 OTC 매장들의 반응은 어떻습니까?

CW: 저는 보통 일주일에 2-3일, 6개 정도의 매장을 방문합니다. 물론 평가나 반응이 굉장히 중요하죠. 매장을 둘러보고, 진열된 제품들도 점검해보고 매장 운영자들과 얘기도 나눠봅니다. 이 과정에서 가장 많이 듣는 평가는 저희 브랜드에 대한 긍정적인 반응입니다.

Owners are excited to see us participate more—doing end cap promotions, giveaways, etc. They like the bonus buys we offer periodically and are happy to see the new marketing initiatives that we’re doing, like bringing in our spokescouple Toya Wright & MeMpHiTz of BET’s “Toya: A Family Affair.”

I often hear that our products sell very well and that they like not having to “sell” our products to their customers. Instead, our products help bring people in the doors. Consumers come in, ask for the Ampro section and grab. Having our products inside help them be able to sell some of the others.

OTC: What types of POP material does Ampro offer to OTC retailers and what makes them work?

CW: We offer store owners posters, shelf talkers, static clings, retail bags, large reusable tote bags, product samples, promotional product packs, incremental displays and new product displays.

What makes them work is that we try to make sure of POP materials are relevant to the needs of the store owners. We try not to always produce what we’d like, necessarily, but what our store owning partners need to support their goals.

OTC: What do you feel is the most important thing for multicultural beauty store owners to know when recommending your company’s products to their customers?

CW: It’s important for them to communicate to their consumers that all of our products are alcohol-free and go through a rigorous testing process before leaving our facility. We are truly a brand they can trust and if ever the need arises for them to communicate with us, we’re just a phone call away.

OTC: What is the best business advice you can give store owners?

Specifically, do you have any insight on how to start the new year off effectively?

CW: As a shopper, the best advice I can give a store owner is to try and make personal connections. I frequent stores that make me feel good about shopping with them. As more and more stores pop up and competition increases, I believe the way to make one stand out is by making a lasting positive impression. With everything your store has to sell, let a personal connection be free.

OTC: Is there any other expert advice you would like to give OTC Beauty Magazine readers?

CW: Keep smiling. It makes the world a better place to live.

부분의 사람들은 새해를 맞이하며 새로운 각오와 바램을 가지고 시작하게 마련이다. 1년전인 2011 년의 시작 역시도 많은 사람들이 ‘파이팅’을 외치며 시작을 하였지만, 전체적으로 괄목할 만한 성 과를 내지는 못한 것이 사실이다. 하지만 그것으로 인해 위축될 필요는 없다. 물론, 2012년의 경제 전망이 엄청나게 밝지는 않지만, 모두 개인이 마음 먹기에 달린 것이다. 오히려, 이럴 때 일수록 마음의 긴장을 풀 고 한발 물러 서서 주변을 다시 돌아보는 시간을 갖는 것도 나쁘진 않을 것이다. 좀더 억척으로 발버둥 치 기 보다는 여유로운 마음으로, 경기위축으로 인한 스트레스를 털어내는 것이 급선무가 아닐까 생각해 본다. 가족들과의 소중한 시간을 보내며 자신을 재정비 함으로써 바닥난 에너지를 재충전 할 수 있는 시기를 갖 는 것이 몸과 마음을 건강하게 만드는 또 하나의 방법이 될 수도 있는 것이다. 이번에 OTC 뷰티 매거진에 서 인터뷰를 한 조지아주 터커시에 위치한 J C Beauty Supply 의 서영수 사장은 마음의 여유를 가지고 한 발짝 뒤로 물러선 시선으로 스토어를 운영하는 여유로움을 가지고 있는 사람이었다. 20여년간 뷰티 업계에 종사한 베테랑이기도 한 그는, 눈앞의 이익을 쫓기 보다는 마음의 여유를 가지고 가족과 본인 삶의 질을 향 상 시키려는 데에 무게를 두고 있었다. 지극히 상투적인, ‘행복을 돈만으로는 살 수는 없다’ 라는 진리를 완전히 섭렵하고 평온을 찾은 모습을 하고 있었다. 어떻게 하면 그러한 여유를 가질 수 있는지 그의 이야기 를 들어보기로 하자.

선진 스토어 환경 J C Beauty Supply. 언뜻, 본인 이름의 이니셜을 따서 이름을 지었을 것이라 생각되었 다. 하지만 이는 ‘Jesus Christ’ 의 이니셜을 따서 만든 이름이다. 이름 만으로도 그들 의 신앙을 느낄 수 있었다. 1993년도에 처음 뷰티 서플라이 스토어를 시작하여 올해 로 20여년째 뷰티인으로 살아온 서사장은 현재의 J C Beauty Supply 는 오픈 한지 고 작 5개월 밖에 되지 않았다고 한다. 하지만 스토어의 내부는 그 동안 서사장이 생각해 오던 이상적인 스토어상을 집약시킨 흔적이 역력했다. 깨끗한 마루 바닥과 벽면의 디 스플레이들은 여느 백화점이 부럽지 않아 보였다. 3,000 sq ft 의 적당한 크기의 스토 어 선반에는 잘 정돈된 제품들이 빼곡히 진열되어 있었으며, 바닥에 떨어진 먼지 하나 발견하기 힘들 정도로 깔끔히 정돈이 돼 있어, 쇼핑하는 고객들의 기분마저도 상쾌하 게 만들기에 부족함이 없었다. J C Beauty Supply 에서는 POS시스템도 사용하고 있 다. 서사장은, 처음에 컴퓨터에 자신이 없어 사용하기가 많이 두려웠었다고 한다. 하 지만 용기를 내어 일주일 정도 직접 부딪혀서 조작을 하다 보니, 이제는 POS시스템이 없으면 너무 불편할 정도로 익숙해져 있다고 한다. “단순히 편리함을 떠나 소비자들 에게 계산하는 과정을 직접 눈으로 보여줄 수 있기 때문에 고객들의 신뢰도 높아집니 다” 라며 POS에 흠뻑 빠진 모습이었다. 본인이 오래 전부터 생각해오던 스토어 환경 을 일구어낸 서사장은, “예전부터 이러한 환경의 스토어를 만들고 싶었습니다” 라며 만족스러운 웃음을 지어 보였다.

서사장은 1972년, 가족들과 미국으로 이민하여 학교를 졸업하고 아버지가 운영하던 식품점의 운영을 도우며 소매상의 경험을 처음 하였다고 한다. 하지만, 그 후 지인의 권유로 인해 뷰티 서플라이 스토어를 알게 되었고, 본인에게 뷰티 스토어가 더욱 적합 하다는 생각에 업종을 변경하게 되었다고 한다. 서사장은 “미국에 어렸을 때 와서 그 런지, 저에게는 한국 사람들을 상대하는 것 보단, 미국 사람들을 상대로 스토어를 운 영하는 것이 더 쉬웠습니다. 그 때 저를 뷰티 업계로 인도해 준 형님께 감사하게 생각 하고 있습니다” 라고 한다. 뷰티 업계에 발을 디딘 이후로, 그 동안 4개의 지역에서 스 토어를 운영 했었다는 서사장은, 스토어를 선정할 때 주위에 흑인 식품점이 있는 곳을 선호한다고 하며, 지역의 생활 수준도 스토어 선정 시 고려할 대상이라고 한다. “지역 소비자의 생활 환경에 따라 스토어에 구비하는 제품의 품질을 결정해야 합니다. 하지 만 이제는 생활이 넉넉하지 못한 소비자라 할지라도 아주 저가의 제품들만을 구입하 지는 않는 추세입니다. 그만큼 소비자들의 제품에 대한 이해도가 높아진 것이겠지요” 라고 덧붙인다. 현재 J C Beauty Supply 에는 20% 정도의 백인 고객들이 있다고 한다. “백인 고객들은 주로 잡화를 구입하고 있습니다. 그에 맞춰 백인들을 겨냥한 제품들 을 조금 늘릴 생각입니다” 라는 서사장은, 취급하는 제품에 따라 고객층도 어느 정도 는 컨트롤 할 수 있다고 한다.

고객들과 친분 쌓기 서사장은 12세때 미국으로 이민을 온 1.5세대인 만큼 영어에 전 혀 문제가 없는 점을 스토어 경영에서 십분 발휘하고 있다. “방 문하는 고객들과 많은 대화를 하려고 합니다” 라고 하는 서사장 은, 고객과의 많은 대화가 편안한 쇼핑환경을 만들어 준다고 한 다. 또한, 상황에 따라 샘플과 무료 제품 등을 나누어 주어 그들 과의 관계를 돈독히 한다고 한다. 20여년의 세월 동안, 대부분의 스토어를 조그마한 도시에서 경영해온 서사장은, “엄청난 제품 들을 퍼주는 것이 아니라, 말 그대로 ‘시골 인심’과 같은 수준에 서인 것입니다. 단지 제품을 무상 제공하여 그들의 환심을 사려 는 것이 아니라, 고객을 너무 장삿속으로만 대하지 않는다는 느 낌을 주어 좀더 편안한 쇼핑 환경을 만들어 주는데 그 목적이 있 습니다” 라고 한다. 물론, 그러한 제품들은 고가가 아니라 상황 에 따라서 $1 정도의 가격에 한정해서라고 한다. 하지만 그 효과 는 몇 배라고 귀띔한다.

새로운 제품은 소비자들의 요구에 따라 구비하는 편이 라고 한다. “소비자들은 자신이나, 친구, 또는 그들의 미용사가 효능을 확인하기 전에는 그 제품을 믿지 않는 경향이 있습니다” 라며, 새로운 제품을 찾는 고객의 전화번호를 먼저 받아놓고 제 품을 구비한 후 그 고객에게 전화로 제품이 입고 됐음을 알려 준 다고 한다. 그리하면, 고객들에게 좀더 개인적인 서비스를 제공 한다는 느낌을 주는 효과도 볼 수 있다고 한다.

여유로움을 찾아서 서사장은 이전에 스토어를 운영 했을 때, 왕복 2시간이 소요되는 거리를 매일 출근하였다고 한다. 그것도 모자라 거의 4년여의 시 간을 주말에만 식구들하고 시간을 보내는, 소위 말하는 ‘주말 부 부’ 생활을 하기도 하였다고 한다. 하지만 가족과의 시간이 더욱 소중하다는 것을 깨달으며 그 스토어를 매각하고 현재의 스토어 를 오픈 하였다고 한다. 이유는 단순히 가족들과 떨어져 있는 게 싫어서였다고 한다. “이전의 스토어가 매출 면에서는 훨씬 나았 지만, 저는 가족을 선택했기 때문에 후회는 전혀 없습니다” 라고 한다. 슬하에 3명의 자녀를 두고 있는 서사장은 “그 동안 너무 앞 70

만 보고 달려온 것 같습니다. 이제는 일에 집착하는 것 보다 조금 여유를 갖고 가족들과 보다 많은 시간을 보내는데 집중하고 싶 습니다” 라는 서사장은 올해부터는 일요일에 스토어를 닫을 생 각이라고 한다. 비단 뷰티 서플라이 뿐만 아니라, 타 업종의 많은 스토어 오너들이 요즘과 같은 상황에 오히려 하루를 쉰다는 것을 납득하기가 쉽지 않을 것이다. 심지어, 스토어가 오픈한지 5개월 밖에 되지 않아 고객들을 단골로 만드는데 주력하고 있는 상황이 라면 더욱 그러할 것이다. 하지만, 서사장은 이러한 결정도 어렵 지 않게 내린 것처럼 보였다. “고객과의 관계가 하루 아침에 이 루어 지는 것은 아니지 않습니까? 지금처럼 고객들에게 친절히 대하다 보면 그 결과를 보게 될 것이라 믿습니다” 라며 마음을 비 우고 결정을 내린 평온함이 느껴졌다. “현재 장기적인 경기 침체로 인해 많은 한인 소매상들이 예민해 져 있는 상태인 것 같습니다. 따라서 더욱 경쟁이 심화되고 있습 니다. 모두 조금씩 뒤로 물러서서 긴장을 완화 시켰으면 좋겠습 니다. 그러면 몸과 마음의 건강도 찾을 수 있을 것 같습니다. 건 강이 우선 아니겠습니까?” 라는 서사장에게서 확실히 무엇인가 를 초월했다는 느낌을 받았다. 이는 20여년간 반복된 생활로 인 해 지쳐서 나태해진 것과는 차원이 다른 것이었다. 뷰티 업계에 종사하고 있는 스토어 오너들이 이러한 여유를 조금이라도 가질 수 있다면, 현재의 과열된 경쟁양상을 확연히 줄일 수 있지 않겠 냐는 생각을 해본다. 서사장과 그의 가족들이 앞으로도 그러한 여유로운 생활을 영위할 수 있기를 바래본다.

Here are my top tips for winning EVERY game.

Know the Rules – Winners know the rules inside and out. They play by the rules and flex them in their favor every chance they get. It is more fun to win by playing by the rules.

No one likes to play with a cheater.

Always be Training – Having depth on the team is a must. Cross train employees to fill in for each other. Have specialists on staff who know a categories’ and manufacturers’ product better than the manufacturers own team does. Use training sessions to build team spirit, knowledge and a shared game-winning vision.

Play to Your Strengths – Do not try to play a passing game if you have a world class running back. Some games are over before they start when a team fails to use the tools at hand. Sell the categories and manufacturers with whom you have solid relationships, receive great support and know and trust the products. It takes a team, a partnership.

Win-Win – Remember, it is not really a game. In games there can only be one winner. Keep your customers happy and coming back by seeking out win-win situations where your business derives benefit from each transaction just as your customers do. You will be in business longer and enjoy it more if everyone wins.

Therapy Trends Solutions and Resolutions Purchase habits in 2012 will be driven by the texture, diversity and the economy. These key drivers will impact how products are formulated, categorized and priced. OTC store owners should stock the solutions that resolve to Blend, Trend and Extend consumer preferences.

Blending of Cultures - Consumers are becoming more likely to select products by pricing than custom formulas.

High-end hair, cosmetic and skin items are expected in every shopping destination. Expensive luxury and inexpensive necessities should be available to minimize channel switching.

The OTC should be a shopping destination for all consumer needs.

Trending toward Texture - “Naturally curly” products are being used by consumers with ringlets, afro coils or loose waves. It is no longer unusual for Caucasian consumers to purchase gels and extensions. Likewise, African American consumers are shopping for weightless sprays and glossers. Texture is the driver that determines the purchase, not ethnicity.

Extending the Service - Economic strife has created categories within categories. Shampoos must be double duty. Conditioners must deliver body and protection.

Relaxers are vehicles for color and botanicals. At-home hair and nail products are designed to keep a professional appearance between salon visits. New chemistries are being created to extend and enhance relaxer and color services.

At-home care is a necessity and salon quality performance is mandatory. Consumers are demanding value.

Normally New Year’s resolutions involve diet and exercise regimens. OTC owners should resolve to provide products that maximize choices, stretch their dollars and extend salon services.

Happy New Year! Looks like we are getting older and of course, those infamous new year resolutions to lose weight, eat right and exercise are all swimming in the heads of your customers. Now is the season to really promote and push your semi-permanent and permanent hair coloring to your customers. There are some really great options available to your customers and most barbers and stylist are well trained on the processes to make their clients look youthful and feel great about their transformation for 2012.

애플의 스마트폰 ‘아이폰4’가 갑자기 폭발 하며 불에 타는 사고가 한국에서도 발생했 다. 대학생 하모씨(23)는 강원도 횡성군 스 키장으로 가는 셔틀 버스 안에서 아이폰4 가 폭발하는 사고를 겪었다. 하씨는 “그때 생각만 해도 아찔하다”며 “버스를 탄 지 한 시간 정도 지났을 때 갑자기 아이폰4가 뜨 거워지면서 부풀어오르기 시작했다”고 말 했다. 당황한 하씨는 먼저 버스 통로 바닥 에 아이폰4를 내려놨다. 몇 초 후 아이폰4 는 안에서 연기를 내기 시작했고 탑승한 승 객들이 비명을 지르는 등 버스는 아수라장 이 됐다고 한다. 결국 버스가 정차한 뒤 내 려서 길에 휴대폰을 던졌다. 하씨는 “5분 넘게 계속 연기가 나기에 물을 부었더니 겨 우 연기가 멎었다”며 “너무 당황해서 물을 부었는데 그러다 배터리가 진짜로 폭발했 을 수도 있다는 이야기를 듣고 더 놀랐다”
