Fingernails (and the condition of hands in general) make a profound statement about a person, even at first glance. If nails are adequately maintain and strong then it shows a sense of pride in appearance. On the flip side, unclean, brittle and bitten nails could make others second guess your professionalism, especially in a business atmosphere.

In this issue we have gathered together information to keep you educated on both effective store management and nail health. Use this knowledge for your benefit and to share with curious customers.

How will they know the difference between acetone and non-acetone nail polish remover if you don’t tell them?

Just because it’s an edition dedicated to fingernails, do not think it’s all about polish and creative, feminine fashions. We’ve included men here too! (See page 32.) After all, basic nail health is vital for everyone; it doesn’t have to include a colored lacquer.

Tips to Retain Business When the Competition is Bigger and Branded

T

he echoes of big business can be heard all throughout today’s society. There is an entire movement dedicated to addressing the increasing powers of multi-billion dollar businesses and their effect on the “little guy.” The hair care industry is no different. More than ever before, major retail and drug store chains are carrying ethnic health and beauty products at discount prices and mind-numbing quantities. This creates a dilemma for the smaller OTC stores that have been the foundation of the ethnic hair care dollar for the past few decades. According to industry statistics, the average retail chain will spend over $300 million for advertising worldwide and that does not account for promotional activities such as coupons and public relations.

So how does the average small retail store retain business while battling the major merchandise monsters we call chain stores? From the average Joe to the business expert, 12

all say that size can, in fact, be a small factor when it comes to business and small retailers should rely on their sharp attributes to stay relevant.

“Business has definitely slowed down, but we still do ok,” declared Mr. Yu, the owner of J & M Beauty Supply of Riverdale, Ga. “I mean it’s the economy and everything. It is hard to say why.”

J& M Beauty Supply is a community staple in Riverdale, Ga.; your average friendly ethnic beauty supply found throughout many neighborhoods around the country.

This year, just up the street sprang a Dollar General. Drive just a few blocks and you will hit a Rite Aide, Walgreens and Sally Beauty Supply. All this is just a stones through away from the retail mega-giant Wal-Mart. You will see at least five more smaller OTC stores amongst this retail chain vice grip.

How are they staying afloat?

“Let’s go shopping,” suggested John Mariotti, consultant and novelist on the American Express Small Business Trends Forum, in a post. Retailers and other competitive business owners should know what the competitor has to offer and remember to offer a wide range of variety and alternatives to customers. It is important to remember that most retail chains may have a large store with major advertising dollars but their hair care section is not that large. They are only going to carry certain brands or products and in many cases they are not going to offer the popular staples at all. For instance, weave is the number one fastest growing trend in the ethnic hair care business with sales in the billions worldwide, but very few retail chains carry human or synthetic hair and the maintenance items are more than scarce.

Service is another important factor for small OTC chains once a customer is in a retail store and has questions about a product. Will they purchase it based on price? Many customers say they would rather go to a beauty supply store for most items.

“I need a detangler for synthetic hair, but I could not get a straight answer from anyone in here,” stated Tenisha Maynard as she pushed her cart aimlessly through the ethnic hair care section of one of the largest retailers in the business. She had a cart filled with holiday goodies, clothes and food but was skeptical about buying her hair care product. “I thought I could get everything here and save time but I’ll stop at the beauty supply on the corner. I need some assistance and I don’t want to chance it.”

Many women feel this way. I took a poll of 10 women in two different stores and they all insisted that they would rather buy most of their products at their local beauty supply.

Why do they have this preference? They all gave the same answer—service!

“You know we do offer more than just hair products” said Mr. Yu. “I mean to me, chain stores are in a different category. We are providing our customers with a service.

We answer questions and help them make the best personal choices for their hair. You will not get that at major chains.”

Finally, the most interesting advice comes from someone far away from the ethnic hair care sector, but whose name is synonymous with entrepreneurship throughout the world. Richard Branson cited “21 Survival Strategies for Small Business Success.” He stated that smaller companies should be creative and innovate consistently on the little things that big companies ignore. Remember that larger companies are too big to move quickly. It will take them three times as long to carry the new waves in hair care. The evidence is clear throughout pop culture. We have been seeing red and blue wigs and hair pieces in neighborhood beauty supplies long before it made the cover of Rolling Stone magazine. Four years ago, you could only get products for natural ethnic hair types from the OTCs and they still remain the only retailers that carry the full range of each brand. Most major manufacturers test their new brands at the OTC level, so the smaller stores do have an advantage.

The major chains may have big advertising dollars, but beauty supply stores are the staples of the ethnic hair care community.

There is no question that the economy is having an effect on all business, but OTC stores should take solace that they have some key advantages over their larger competitors. They should continue to provide variety and a wide selection of choices to their customers. They should remember that they can offer services that cannot be found at chain stores and they should remain inventive. They are who the customers will continue to look to for forward moving trends. Use these advantages wisely. These are just a few stones to hurl at the retail giants, but as we all know, sometimes one stone is all it takes to win the day.

ail polish remover may not be as exciting as nail lacquer, but it is just as important. In the past, nail polish remover was used only to remove nail polish, but with all the recent advances in manicures, nail polish remover has become more versatile. To properly apply nail appliqué polish strips, for example, nail polish remover is a vital instrument in eliminating excess oil from the nail so that the appliqué will stick correctly. In this economy, many women are doing at-home manicures because they simply cannot afford to go to the nail salon every other week. This means that customers want a variety of nail products from which to choose, and more importantly, they want products that are easy to use and yield professional-looking results. Where nail polish remover is concerned, customers want a product that will remove old polish with ease, but also nourish nails.

Acetone vs. Non-Acetone

In the past, nail polish remover was harsh and often made nails flaky and brittle. Most nail polish removers were composed of about 60 percent acetone, a strong smelling liquid solvent capable of quickly dissolving nail polish. Pure acetone can be harsh on skin and nails, and can weaken nails.

Today it is still the principal ingredient in most nail polish removers, but most formulas are now less harsh and are intended to nourish nails while removing nail polish. Experts recommend an acetone based remover for removing polish from natural nails.

As artificial nails became trendy, non-acetone nail polish removers were created. Non-acetone nail polish removers are best used on artificial nails because they won’t weaken or damage the nail as acetone would. The main ingredient is ethyl acetate, a less aggressive solvent. Non-acetone removers can also be used on natural nails, and some customers prefer the less intense scent of them. They can, however, take longer to dissolve polish.

More recently, some companies have sought to create a safer acetone-free nail polish remover that uses an odorless chemical to remove polish and that nourishes nails with aloe or vitamin E. The chemical used in this type of nail polish remover is methanol, which can be toxic if inhaled, ingested or absorbed by the skin. It is recommended that consumers be aware that “natural” products are not necessarily hazard free, and that it is important to check labels for products that are water-based and do not contain methanol when searching for non-acetone nail polish remover.

In addition to the differing main ingredients of nail polish remover, there is also a variety of formulas that can nourish nails.

Some removers contain wheat protein or vitamin E to strengthen nails. Other formulas use gelatin to fortify weak nails, and the aloe and vitamin E combination is frequently used to condition and replace moisture in dry, brittle nails.

네일 칼라 리무버는 서로 다른 주요 성분뿐 아니라, 영양을 공급하는 성분도 종류가 다양하다. 어떤 리무버는 손톱을 강화시켜주는 비타민 E 나 밀 단백질이 포함되어 있고, 어떤 제품에는 약해진 손톱을 강화시킬 수 있도록 젤라틴을 사용하고 있다. 알로에와 비타민 E 조합은 건조하고 쉽게 부서지는 손톱에 보습력을 높여주기 위해 주로 사용된다.

Finished Product Bottles, Sponges and Pads—so many choices!

Once a customer has decided which formula is best for her, she will then have to decide how she would like to apply her nail polish remover. In the past, nail polish remover simply came in a jar or bottle, to be poured onto a cotton ball and wiped on nails until the nail varnish was removed. Today, nail polish remover is packaged in a variety of ways aimed at making the process of removing nail polish more efficient.

Some removers come in a “no-spill pump” that claims to make removing nail polish an easier and faster process with less of an odor. Customers simply press a cotton ball on top of the pump to dispense just the right amount of nail polish remover. These dispensers eliminate the need to have an open bottle of remover that produces fumes and that could potentially spill everywhere (every at-home manicurist has probably dealt with that annoyance).

Nail polish remover also comes in individually wrapped presoaked pads. These are usually bigger and thicker (often made of felt), making polish removal faster and more convenient. Polish remover pads are especially handy for travel—users don’t have to worry about a bottle of nail polish remover leaking in their suitcases!

Polish remover also comes in a jar, eliminating the need for cotton balls. Inside the jar is a sponge that is saturated with nail polish remover. Consumers simply soak their fingers in the sponge and rub away the nail polish. This is particularly advantageous for those who like hard-to-remove glitter nail polish. Soaking one’s nails before rubbing away the polish makes removal much easier.

Of course the most trusted choice is the traditional liquid nail polish remover in a bottle. It comes in a variety of formulas and sizes, making it easier to find the right solution for each individual’s nails.

It is also usually less expensive than specially packaged nail polish removers.

The Future of Nail Polish Remover

With the wide variety of nail polish available today— an infinite array of nail lacquer colors, appliqués, gel color, “shatter” nail polish, “bedazzling,” and glittery, iridescent and metallic finishes—consumers need a nail polish remover that is versatile. They are also concerned with a multitude of remover concerns, including the main ingredient (acetone for natural nails, non-acetone for acrylic or artificial nails), the formula (strengthening, conditioning, or moisturizing) and how it is dispensed (via bottle, pre-soaked pads or jar). Women expect nail polish remover to nourish their nails while also quickly and efficiently dissolving nail polish. With that in mind, the nail care industry is taking innovative approaches to researching and developing new products.

The bottom line is that most women do not have the money to frequently go to a nail salon, or the time to do prolonged manicures at home. They simply want healthy nails and beautiful manicures in a snap. With the many varieties of nail products and nail polish removers, this is possible. Women have long used their nails as a way of expressing themselves, and rocking a flashy manicure seems to be the trend right now. Just look at Katy Perry’s “disco ball” nails or Lady Gaga’s signature bedazzled manicures. Regardless of whether a woman wants an attention-grabbing manicure or a simple coat of nail lacquer for a chic, refined look, using a good nail polish remover is the first step.

he natural Afro hair style is not new, but is a recycled phenomenon dating back to years past and continuing to the present day, only in different ways depending on the trends of various times in the history of Afro hair development. In today’s world the Natural Afro look is primarily concerned with hair belonging to mixed race African-American females (although men are included to a much lesser degree).

The start of the Afro-American multicultural hair phenomenon dates back decades to a time period where many African-Americans attempted to alter their hair by straightening it with hot home made iron combs or dinner forks. The process was carried out with cooking grease or lard for sheen, longevity and to keep hair from scorching; this was the beginning of pressing hair.

Later they discovered that they could relax the hair with lye soap that was used to wash very soiled clothes. However disastrous results of burning scalps, hair loss and a hair color change to red would result from combing the lather through tresses. The burning and hair loss was resolved by accident by rinsing the hair with lemonade or vinegar, thus neutralizing the formula. Later during that same period mashed potatoes and lard were combined with the lye in order to control the concoction from gravitating to the scalp, resulting in less burning of the scalp.

Fast forward to the early 1900s when the pressing comb and related products were developed and popularized by a woman named Annie Malone who started the first AfricanAmerican owned beauty school chain called Poro College in Chicago, Indianapolis and St. Louis. (Poro is a West African word meaning organization dedication and discipline.) Malone did not invent the pressing comb, but she did popularize it in conjunction with her related products line; the true originator is unknown.

She and her husband acquired a wealth of $14 million during the course of their business empire. She was the mentor and the inspiration for Madam C.J. Walker, who improved the pressing comb to be more affective on course, kinky hair. Walker was granted a patent for the improvements. Malone and Walker’s mission was to develop and devise improved ways to style female Afro kinky hair with products that replaced make-shift methods of using thick petrolatum and axle grease to control kinky hair. Walker included the pressing comb in her innovative shampoo press and curl kit that made her the first self-made female millionaire in America.

Fast forward again to the 1950s when hair relaxers became popular. This method used highly caustic cream to penetrate and soften the resistant Afro hair, and then physically smoothed it until it was straight.

Later in the late 60s a “back to basics” movement came about and inspired the Natural, Afro style. This was to allow the hair to grow out in its natural state and then cut it into a neat rounded shape.

This style was very popular among both African-American women and men. However, this style was rejected by non African-American employers because they felt that was a sign of black activism against the ruling class. Many black women and some men were mandated by their bosses to return to their so called “straight look” by way of pressing, relaxing (or short-cut afro’s for men) or risk losing their jobs.

This resulted in lawsuits that went all the way to the Supreme Court that ruled a black person can not be discriminated against for wearing 38

This style was replaced in the late 70s with the curly perm better known as the Jeri Curl. This style used a mild chemical (cold wave solution) originally used to form a curl on naturally straight hair in reverse to put a controlled smooth curl or wave in Afro-kinky hair.

Afro hair is described by several names based on the many styles and ways it can be worn. This is because of the many textures of Afro hair from straight to extremely kinky. No other culture has such a variety of choices and they all go by a number of names. A few examples are: The Press & Curl, the Natural or Afro, (in its natural curly, wavy, kinky state), Curly Perm (chemically induced style on rods) first known as the Jeri Curl and Relaxed (chemically softened, then combed and smoothed straight), Cornrows and braids that originated in Africa, and dread locks that had their origin in the West Indies.

In conclusion, you can see and understand the many aspects that are attributed to Afro hair. This variety is the reason why the Afro hair care business accounts for one-third of sales of hair care products and professional service in America. This is despite the fact that this group makes up only 12 percent of the population.

Remember the old phrase that describes a women’s hair as her “crowning glory.” The social and cultural significance of Afro hair should not be underestimated.

Soul of the South Black Folks in Southern cities

Second of a three part series

s we noted in the first article of this series there has been a movement of black Americans returning (retromigration) to the South. Many are finding they live better (the weather is warmer) in this region and others may want to join their cousins who never left. The U.S. Census of 2010 noted that 57 percent of all African-Americans live in the South, the highest percentage in more than 50 years.

The South is also the fastest growing region in the country with a total 14 percent increase in population. Atlanta has now replaced Chicago with the second highest number of African-Americans after New York City.

Seeing opportunity in this demographic phenomenon, a TV broadcast service, “Soul of the South Network,” plans to launch in 50 markets offering entertainment, sports, news and cultural programming. Some of its Southern cities include Atlanta and Augusta, Ga.; Memphis, Tenn.; Monroe, La. and Orlando, Fla. This is just one example of the importance of target marketing.

The concentration of blacks in the South is no mystery when one considers how most of their ancestors arrived on the East Coast. The Old Slave Market Museum in Charleston, S.C., with its massive stone facade, is a stark reminder of some of America’s darkest history. February’s Black History celebrations reminded us of the Civil Rights progress thus far. But marketers, manufactures and retailers should be aware that all black Americans with their unique beginnings have a shared history and culture that is key. That is why in the last article of this series we will discuss “Up South”—cities that have residents who are not geographically in the South, but whose cultural roots are. Some of these include New York, Philadelphia, Chicago and Detroit.

air loss prevention has become a police matter. This type of loss does not involve the basic symptom of alopecia, but it does involve a national epidemic of burglaries that have been reported in many major cities. OTCs are being hard-hit with burglary that is targeting the artificial hair section. Who would drive a minivan right into the front door of a storefront and bypass the register? Who would buy expensive hair from a parked car? Who would enter your OTC to sell your stolen merchandise back to you? The answer is that it could be your employee, co-worker or your friendly local stylist.

While many stylists refuse to allow hot hair to be sold or used in their salon, others may encourage it. If it takes $600 worth of hair to do one weave at least four times per year, that’s over $2,000 not including the service. Considering the cost and frequency of purchasing weave hair it should be no surprise that hair—like gold jewelry, drugs or electronics—has become the new street commodity. In this economy, theft crimes are on the rise. Your average student, office worker or middle-income professional may not be able to financially maintain the upkeep of human hair. Attractive to these consumers, the street value may amount to pennies on the dollar. A $200 pack can sell for $25. The loss to the OTC’s can be millions. Who should pay for this hair loss?

Typically retail loss prevention has focused primarily on shop lifting. High-end hair goods and kits were often placed behind counters and some OTC dealers attempted to have customers show IDs at checkout.

Many inner city stores are also manned with security teams. This type of theft can cost traditional retailers close to 3 percent of revenue in lost sales according to the National Retail Federation. With so many high price tag items in an OTC this could be three times as much whereas many other major retailers may find that it is not worth prosecuting.

Burglary is a different crime—most often a felony. In several cases assault and murder charges have resulted from hair loss burglary. Most retail burglaries occur at night or over the weekends when areas are typically closed. The United States Department of Justice asserts that demand, size and portability, fad interest and street

Electronic surveillance will remain conscious about shoplifters and staff pilferage. Yet is there any surveillance for after hour intruders?

The development and maintenance of natural hair care is not a new concept.

Many lesser known companies have been producing quality products specifically catered to the natural coif over the past decade. It is only recently that major hair care manufacturers have given this genre of hair care any attention. As with most products, the consumer dollar dictates the new trend. Many manufacturers have been producing relaxers and harsh chemicals for several years but have discovered that there is big money to be made off of the self-identity of others. So “poof,” suddenly the natural hair care section was born. I am here to tell you that it is just not that black and white.

Read the labels my friends and check these so called leaders in the industry’s background in natural hair care. As the president of Professional Products Unlimited, Inc. I can tell you that all products are not created equal or with as much care as Jamaican Mango & Lime for Locs & Twists and others like it.

Over 10 years ago everyone thought that we were crazy; I thought that I was crazy! Why would I choose to go any other route to succeed? To me, this is what defines natural hair care at its core. I could have jumped on the retail relaxer bandwagon and had success right away. However, more than that, I had a responsibility to our customers to develop the quality products that would bring out the best features of beauty within them. We still believe this today. It was also time for someone—anyone—to give women with natural hair types real options.

Most manufacturers produced and sold items to cater to chemically treated hair and so those with natural hair types had to conform to the limited products available. I was confident that the concept of beautiful, natural hair would flourish eventually, but little did I know that our products would pioneer a whole category.

I have locs that I have been growing

f nails could talk, what would they say? Would they complain about constantly being used

to pick up things and scratch hard surfaces, brag about how pretty they look with their new manicured look, or be painfully annoying, bugging their owner until the uneven edges that keep getting snagged on clothes are finally filed away? These declarations might be made known, but more importantly they would reveal things about a person’s overall health that they might not even be aware of.

Indeed, nails are actually a team of 10 detectives—20 if you’re counting toes—who tell a great deal about internal health. It’s long been said that “you are what you eat” and that statement is true on a multitude of levels. Not only does the food that a person intakes determine their well-being and defense against sickness, but it also decides how they appear on the outside. Three important external factors indicate health: nails, hair and skin. Use the information included here to educate customers, and yourself, on how to use nails to stay up-to-date with the state of your personal health.

Get the Facts First and foremost it’s important to know what the attributes of healthy nails are. Strong, smooth and whole, growing nails are indicators of a nutritious and fit lifestyle. On the other hand, dry, brittle nails that are fragile, discolored and ridged show signs of trouble. As soon as these symptoms are noticed, a closer look into the diet of the owner is necessary.

The foods people eat determine many factors of internal health. When someone consumes too little of a certain vitamin, mineral or nutrient their well-being suffers. When inadequate amounts of nutrients are eaten, the appearance and state of nails will reflect the deficiencies. Perhaps the easiest healthy habit to remember is to drink plenty of water. As essential as water is to the body as a whole, it is just as crucial for nails.

Unhealthy nails are also traced back to a lack in various vitamins in the foods people eat. The following are four vitamins and the effects they have on finger and toenails when they are not ingested in adequate amounts: Vitamin A – creates dry, brittle nails. This vitamin also helps the body produce protein (which maintains the nail bed and protects against hangnails).

Vitamin B – leaves ridged, fragile nails. Their growth and repairing capabilities could also be affected.

Vitamin C – generates persistent hangnails. This vitamin also helps the body fight off fungal infections, which can easily be contracted in the nail.

Vitamin D – could make nails less strong and slower to grow.

Calcium, zinc and iron are also just as significant as the vitamins listed above. They help prevent dry, brittle nails, strengthen nails and keep them from becoming discolored and thin, respectively.

Feature Be Conscious of Foods With vitamins playing such a large role in nail and overall health, it’s no wonder that everyone seems to make a big deal about watching what they eat. Having determined what should be included in a healthy diet nutrient-wise, you’re probably wondering what can be done to fix it. Have no fear, the solution is easy.

Altering the foods that are eaten is one way to improve health and ensure the essential elements are absorbed (think a balanced diet). However, for an easier solution consider taking a multivitamin. Seeing as they should be taken in certain ratios, an all-encompassing supplement very well may be the best choice. This isn’t saying that a bad diet can be followed with no consequences; developing healthier habits is always beneficial and is encouraged. Adding this simple factor simply may improve it even more.

In regards to a balanced diet, let’s explore the foods that contain each of the essential vitamins and minerals mentioned earlier. The following are a few foods that are high in each of the vitamins or minerals with which they are categorized: Vitamin A – sweet potatoes, carrots, leafy greens and yellow/orange melons like cantaloupe Vitamin B – avocado, peanuts, an array of vegetables and meats, beans and wheat products Vitamin C – citrus fruits, broccoli, kiwi fruits, strawberries and bell peppers Vitamin D – mushrooms, milk, fish and eggs Calcium – dark, leafy greens, sesame seeds, beans, milk, dried fruits and nuts Zinc – oysters, roast beef, dark chocolate, lamb, pumpkin seeds and garlic Iron – red meat, egg yolks, beans and artichokes

Take Care and Maintain Now that you’re set to educate customers and keep your own nails in check, you must not forget to also do your part to take care of nails externally. By wearing gloves when doing work that could put stress on nails; filing nails in the smooth stokes, moving in the same direction so as not to split them; not over-polishing; and keeping nails moisturized, nails will remain attractive.

If customers tend to go to salons or get professional manicures and pedicures regularly, urge them to pay attention to the procedures the nail tech uses. It’s OK to refuse services they are uncomfortable with.

For example, if their hands are sensitive and having cuticles pushed back hurts, they can ask to skip that part. A peace of mind is just as healthy as physical fitness.

In conclusion, nails serve a much greater purpose to customers than simply canvases they can decorate and portray their individuality through. Instead they act as silent detectives, reporting the status of internal health. Perhaps we should all pay a little more attention to these little tools on the ends of our fingers to know when to change diets or see a doctor (because more serious problems could be underlying). After all, they play a critical role in keeping owners informed about their overall health, even if they can’t actually speak.

I am extremely involved in product research and development and I work with a great team of people at the company to produce, promote, sell and market our personal care and equestrian care lines, making us a well-rounded company that has a substantial presence in both arenas.

The most interesting thing about our business is the diverse audiences we appeal to. We have a unique story, one that gets people’s attention and we have fun with it. Our products cross over different industries: Equine, the Ethnic and Anglo beauty realm, and the teen beauty market. It is very intriguing that all of those audiences feel as if Mane ‘n Tail was created just for them. We are the long hair care solution for many!

OTC: Please provide us with a brief description of Straight Arrow’s history. How has tradition been nurtured over the years?

DK: In 1970, the company started by making the Original Mane ‘n Tail Conditioner for the horse grooming industry as a solution for fuller, thicker, healthier manes and tails that counteracted the harsh cleaning products on the market at that time. Soon the creation of the Original Mane ‘n Tail Shampoo followed as they identified a niche in the market and promptly went with it. In turn, as the equestrian set started to take notice of these result-driven micro-enriched protein formulas for their horses, they subsequently learned that not only was this duo their choice for their beloved horses, but also for themselves.

Why not? A beautiful, healthy, shiny coat, mane and tail were true benefits of this equine hair care system; it was safe for horses and humans alike. Soon, those “in-the-know” were experiencing the “unbridled” results. A whole new set of Mane ‘n Tail enthusiasts were being converted and even passing along a rumor. This rumor was “that hair seemed to be growing faster,” further driving the success of the brand.

Now with 40 years of expertise in researching and manufacturing of personal hair care, Straight Arrow has added many formulas to the Mane ‘n Tail line while maintaining the same integrity the company has had since its inception on the family farm. All products are made here in Bethlehem, Pa. and quality control is of the upmost importance!

OTC: How is Straight Arrow structured? Briefly describe the divisions that make up the company.

DK: We have a core group that makes up our executive team. They manage the different departments in operations/production, sales and marketing, public relations and accounting. Within our sales and marketing department we have veteran director, Lorenzo Mejia who was instrumental in developing our ethnic hair care business. His direct connection with our distributors in that realm has kept Mane ‘n Tail current with industry trends. As a result, we have successfully developed the Herbal Gro line, an olive oil-based hair care treatment system that has become very popular with our ethnic consumers.

OTC: What all types of products does Straight Arrow offer and how can stores benefit by carrying them?

DK: We make hair care solutions for longer, stronger, fuller and thicker hair. Our original formula Mane ‘n Tail Shampoo and its companion conditioner have been a well-kept secret for beauty aficionados everywhere. The shampoo formula contains high lathering and ultra-cleansing agents that are fortified with moisturizers and emollients to help leave hair soft and ultra clean. Followed by a

The line has expanded to include multiple shampoos, conditioners, leave-in treatments, styling/finishing aids, and hand and nail treatments. Deep Moisturizing Shampoo and Conditioner have become an extremely popular duo, formulated with nourishing vitamin E and provitamin B5 to help fortify and repair dry, damaged hair. Also among customer favorites is the Anti-Dandruff Shampoo and Conditioner that cleanses and nourishes both hair and scalp without stripping natural oils while replenishing and strengthening with natural olive oil. This botanically formulated product is luxurious and aromatic, not medicinal. We also provide a system that removes daily build-up from styling products. Gentle Cleansing Shampoo and Gentle Replenishing Conditioner make up a system that restores, revitalizes, and replenishes without harsh ingredients for the most deep down cleansing and conditioning treatment.

Our styling products are also in hot demand. Detangler and Hair Strengthener make hair manageability much easier. Detangler helps keep long hair free of tangles and knots, while adding additional moisturizing properties to help cure dry, split ends. Hair Strengthener is a leave-in conditioner that provides nourishing and repairing essential proteins to hair, preventing breakage and split ends from heat or chemical styling. Our Herbal Gro line also uses an olive oil base in most of the products to help retain essential moisture and prevent breakage to keep hair healthy and strong.

Our brands benefit stores because they consistently generate sales. We have a loyal consumer base that seeks out our high quality products, therefore driving traffic to stores that retail Mane ‘n Tail.

OTC: How do you keep consumers educated that both lines exist (animal and beauty care) and not just one or the other?

DK: We try to educate all consumers and retailers on the entire Straight Arrow story, which in turn explains the brands in their entirety. We have just refreshed our websites and ramped up our social media presence with Facebook and Twitter, which is all about branding. Our corporate Straight Arrow Products, Inc. site was designed with the same look and feel as our separate Mane ‘n Tail Personal Care and Mane ‘n Tail Equine Care sites. All brands are tied together under the corporate umbrella of Straight Arrow, but have different audiences as well as cross-over audiences that undoubtedly keep the brand exposure at the forefront especially by word of mouth.

OTC: What trend have you seen grow the most recently and how has Straight Arrow met consumer demand for it?

DK: Over the years we have had a lot of requests for a color product. Due to popular demand, in 2011 Mane ‘n Tail successfully introduced Color Protect Shampoo and Color Protect Conditioner into the beauty category. It was created to help keep hair, longer, stronger and healthier, but most importantly to keep color lasting longer!

It is a dynamic duo for longer lasting color and something we felt necessary to add to the Mane ‘n Tail line.

OTC: From a store owner’s perspective, what is the easiest aspect of doing business with Straight Arrow?

DK: We have a very straightforward approach to sales and marketing. Our Mane ‘n Tail brand is tried and true and our reputation precedes itself. Our packaging is instantly recognizable and consumers seek out our brand all over the world. We are a well-priced, top quality product that continues to grow in sales even in a down-turned economy because of our consumer demand and reliability to deliver.

OTC: What types of POP material does Straight Arrow offer to OTC retailers and what makes them work?

DK: We have and continue to offer traditional POP materials, including in-store banners and shelf talkers. The biggest success of this brand is what you don’t see happening in the stores to drive sales.

Our dedicated and consistent approach to marketing, advertising and PR generates the goodwill and demand for these products. The ultimate benefit at the store level is increased sales.

OTC: What do you feel is the most important thing for multicultural beauty store owners to know when recommending your company’s products to their customers?

DK: Store owners should feel confident knowing that Straight Arrow manufactures all of our own products and stands behind the product quality while offering full consumer support. Our customers can call our consumer affairs department or they can go to our website for additional information.

Beauty 도 Fashion 이다 2000년도에 가족 모두와 함께 도미를 한 임기정 사장은, 한국에서 뷰티 서플라이 와는 전혀 상관없는, 윤리선생님 이었다고 한다. 하지만, 부인인 Sunny 씨는 한국 에서 의상을 직접 디자인하여 대만에 수출을 하는 회사를 7~8년간 직접 운영하였 다고 한다. Beauty 와 Fashion, 어떻게 보면 매우 다른 직업군으로 분류되는 듯싶 지만, 자세히 들여다 보면 그 연관성을 찾을 수 있다. 둘 다 미를 추구하는 산업이 니, 그런 관점에서는 같은 분야의 산업이라고 할 수 있지 않겠는가? Sunny 씨는, “처음에 옷감의 화려한 색상에 반해 패션 일을 시작하게 되었는데, 그때의 경험이 현재 스토어를 운영하는데 많은 도움이 되고 있습니다” 라고 한다. 임사장 부부가 뷰티 서플라이를 운영하기 시작한 것은 2003년으로 거슬러 올라간다. 처음에 미 국으로 이민을 와, Sunny 씨가 뷰티 도매상에서 2년여간 일을 한 것이 계기가 되 어 뷰티 서플라이 스토어운영을 시작한 이들 부부는, 2003년에 첫 번째 스토어를 오픈 하였다고 한다. 그다지 커다란 규모의 스토어가 아니었음에도 불구하고 그들 의 스토어는 고객들에게 한가지 확실한 특징을 각인 시켰었는데, 그것은 바로 ‘다 양한 색상’ 이었다고 한다. “10년 전에는 화려한 색상의 가발을 취급하는 스토어 가 매우 드물었습니다. 저희의 스토어가 작아서 남들과 차별화 시키기 위해 과감 한 색상들의 가발들을 취급하였는데, 그로 인해 주위의 소비자들에게 빠르게 알려 졌습니다” 라는 Sunny 씨는, 그 당시 유명 미용사들도 헤어쇼에 참가하기 위해 그 들의 스토어에서 가발을 구입할 정도였다고 한다. 또한, 소문을 듣고 화려한 색상 의 가발을 구입하기 위해 먼 곳에서도 스토어를 찾아오는 손님들이 심심찮게 있었 다고 한다. 남다른 색감을 가지고 있는 Sunny 씨는 그녀의 장점을 이용해, 과감한 투자를 접목시켜 그들만의 스토어 색깔을 탄생시킨 것이다.

Sunny 씨 는 “워낙 오래된 스토어라 단골들도 많이 있고 지역에서 많이 알려져 있었습니다. 그러한 장점 때문에 이 스토어를 인수하게 되었습니다” 라고 한다. 하지만, 요즘은 모든 스토어들에 단골이라는 말의 의미가 많이 퇴색되어 가고 있는 추세이다. 요 즘의 소비자들은 예전처럼 한곳에서만 쇼핑을 하는 것이 아니라, 제품, 가격, 서비 스에 따라 이곳 저곳의 스토어를 돌아 다니며 쇼핑을 하고 있는 실정이다. Below are three hot trend predictions for spring/summer 2012 and what they can mean for your business.

Short sides – Clipper cutting will dominate men’s hair.

Short backs and sides will be the defining characteristic of many haircuts. Sales of clippers and trimmers will reflect this trend. Frequency of salon visits will increase as these shorter styles demand rigorous upkeep.

Therapy Trends Museum Quality Nails Upcoming nail trends represent several fine art forms. From impressionist to cubist, nail polishing has been taken to a new vision. The shock value of black polish has been muted out.

Consumers are craving dimension and artistic techniques.

IndustryNews BSG Signs on as Major Supporter of PBA’s ISSE Midwest Beauty Show

The Professional Beauty Association (PBA) has announced that Beauty Systems Group (BSG), which has been a long-time supporter of PBA and the International Salon and Spa Expo Long Beach (ISSE Long Beach), will also be supporting the International Salon and Spa Expo Midwest (ISSE Midwest), PBA’s newest beauty event. BSG has signed an agreement with PBA to support the next four ISSE-branded events, both Long Beach and Midwest, in 2012 and 2013.

술 마시면 기분 좋아지는 이 유 알고보니…

술을 마시면 기분이 좋아지는 이유는 무엇 일까? 최근 미국 캘리포니아 대학 어네스트 갈로 클리닉 연구센터가 술이 사람을 기분 좋게 만드는 이유를 과학적으로 분석해 눈 길을 끌고 있다. 연구팀은 술을 잘 마시는 그룹 13명과 그렇지 않은 그룹 12명을 대상 으로 양전자 방사 단층 촬영(PET•positron emission tomography)을 실시했다. 이 실 험에서 연구팀은 술을 마시게 되면 뇌 부 위인 안와전두피질(orbitofrontal cortex)과

최근 ‘페이스 오일’이 연예인들의 피부 보습 관리 비법으로 꼽히면서, 떠오르는 뷰티 아 이템으로 등장하고 있다. 하지만 아직 널 리 일반화되지 않아 선뜻 구입하는 용기를 내기가 쉽지 않다. 페이스 오일에 대한 오 해와 진실에 대해 파헤쳐봤다.

청소년 시기의 인터넷 중독이 지능 발달에 심각한 악영향을 끼치는 것으로 밝혀졌다. 가톨릭대학교 서울성모병원 정신건강의학 과 김대진•박민현 교수팀은 지 난 2009년 9~10월간 서울의 한 고등학교와 여자중학교 학 생 총 642명을 대상으로 인터 넷 중독 스크리닝 검사를 실시 한 결과 61명인 9.5%가 인터 넷 중독으로 확인됐다고 18일 밝혔다. 검사 결과 이들의 인터 넷 중독이 시작된 평균 연령은 9.72세로 나타났다. 이어 인터 넷에 중독된 청소년 59명과 일 반청소년 43명을 대상으로 실 시한 지능검사 결과 이해력 항 목에서 인터넷 중독 청소년의

수신 : 미주 한인 헤어 도매상 발신 : SC 미소협, LA 뷰티 협회, 시카고 뷰티 협회, NJ 뷰티 협회 제품은 생산, 공급 그리고 수요의 과정을 걸쳐 소비됩니다. 또한 이 과정들이 조화를 잘 이루면 어느 부분에서도 불만은 발생하지 않 습니다. 하지만 이 과정 중 어느 한 쪽으로 힘이 실리면 제품에 대한 불만은 시작됩니다. 그럼 지금 저희 뷰티 업계는 이 과정들이 어 떻습니까? 생산자가 도매상 자리를 위협하고 있고 도매상은 소매상에 신뢰를 상실해 그 골이 깊어가고 있습니다. 위와 같은 상황이 지속되면 오랜 세월 동안 이끌어온 한인 위주의 뷰티 업계는 큰 갈림길에 놓여 선택의 순간이 올 것입니다. 즉 사느냐 죽느냐와 같은 상황이 올 것입니다. 이런 상황을 예방하는데 소매상에서 할 수 있는 일이 매우 한계적입니다. 단지 같은 동포인 한인 헤어 도매상 제 품을 계속 공급 받는 일과 가격 경쟁을 자제하는 일입니다. 하지만 도매상의 신뢰가 바닥같이 상실한 지금에는 위의 예방 방법도 장 담할 수 없는 상황입니다. 그러면 모든 열쇠는 도매상에서 쥐고 있다고 저희 소매상에서는 판단합니다. 또한 지금 문제되고 있는 부분을 지적하고자 합니다. 그 리고 도매상에선 이 문제 해결에 최선을 다해주길 기대합니다.

1. 도매상의 무분별한 제품 공급을 자제해 주시길 바랍니다. – 이 부분이 해결되면 동일 제품으로 과잉 경쟁할 필요가 없고 제품의 가치도 상승할 수 있습니다. 또한 그 제품에 대한 이득이 증가하여 대금 결재 또한 신속할 수 있습니다. 물론 저희 소매상에서도 경쟁 상대가 판매하는 모든 제품을 다 취급해야 한다는 욕심도 자제해야 합니다. 그리고 저희 소매상 간에는 선의의 경쟁을 해야 한다고 생각합니다. 현재까지 도매 값은 큰 폭으로 3차례 인상되었지만 소매 값은 인상되지 못하였습니다. 왜냐하면 동일 제품을 취급하고 있는 경쟁 소매상 때문입니다. 만일 A라는 가계가 도매 값 인상에 상관 없이 기존과 같은 소매 값으로 판매하고 B라는 가계는 도매 값 인상에 맞추어 소매 값을 인상하여 판매하면 대부분의 손님들이 B가계를 욕할 것입니다. 현재 소매상은 많은 고 통을 받고 있습니다. 끝이 않보이는 불경기, 모발 가격 인상 등 현실은 어떻습니까? 소매상은 매월 지출은 같은데 들어오는 수입 이 줄어들어 도매상 대금 결재 문제가 발생하고 있습니다. 이런 현실에는 도매와 소매가 힘을 합쳐서 이 불황을 극복해야 될거라 생각합니다. 도매상은 지금의 거래처를 보호해야 합니다. 그래야 앞으로 문제 해결에 도움이 될 것입니다.

2. 중국 헤어 시장의 현 주소를 알리고 중국 생산자의 횡포를 알리면서 가격 인상이 필수적임을 영문으로 소매상에 보내주면 소매 쪽에선 소비자를 이해 시키는데 도움이 될 것입니다.

4. 헤어 제품에 대한 성분 표기를 요청합니다. – 이 부분은 꼭 해결돼야 하는 문제입니다. 대부분의 소매상에 지금 10인치 헤어가 8 ~ 10종류가 있습니다. 만일 성분 표기가 실시되면 소매상에선 이리 많은 종류의 제품을 취급할 필요가 없습니다. 또한 제품의 가 치를 성분 비율에 두고 판매하며 소비자에게도 쉽게 이해될 수 있기 때문입니다. 더불어 요즘 소비자 중에는 헤어 제품에 대한 알 레르기가 발생하고 있는 상황이고 그래서 성분 표기는 필수적입니다. 또한 성분 표기가 실시되면 브랜드 가치보다는 질이 우선 되어 가격 인상 또한 효율적으로 실시할 수 있을 것입니다. 질이 우선되면 소매상에선 특정 브랜드를 꼭 고집할 필요가 없어 제 3 루트로 구입할 필요성이 없어지고 더 나아가 이를 방지하기 위해선 제품에 고유 번호를 표시하여 공급하면 될 거라 생각합니다. 또한 요즘 고가 제품 도난 방지에도 도움이 될 거라 판단됩니다. 그리고 성분 표기가 없는 제품은 소비자의 알 권리를 묵살하는 비 도덕적인 상술이라고 판단되며 소비자 고발 션터에 신고해야 한다고 생각합니다.

5. 중국 생산자의 도매상 진출은 저희 한인 소매상과 도매상이 거쳐가야 해야 하는 단계고 극복해야 하는 과제라고 생각합니다. – 한 인 도매상이 제품의 질, 상품 판매에 필요한 아이디어 공급, 소매상에 대한 서비스 향상, 신 제품 개발 등으로 중국 도매상에 대 항해야 한다고 판단됩니다. 소매상은 만일 저가 중국 도매상 제품을 판매하고 나면 일시적인 효과는 있을 것입니다. 하지만 장기 적으로 보면 저희 소매상에 큰 손실을 끼칠 것입니다. 감사합니다.
