nother year is almost gone. Eleven months have passed by in what seems like the blink of an eye and you are left to gear up for the new year waiting ahead. With all the excitement that comes along with cracking open a new calendar (you can find a helpful one for planning on Page 46) can also come feelings of apprehension.

How should you handle the kick-off of the new year, how many products should you plan to add in inventory and how you’re going to keep records straight as you transition; these are only a few concerns that could be raised around this time. Don’t worry, we here at OTC Beauty Magazine have found the secret to calming those fears—pause for a moment and look back at what you accomplished this year. Getting focused is key.

Especially around the holidays it is good to reflect on your blessings and the happenings that occurred throughout the year.

Whether you look at your sales success, the new product launches that really excelled or perhaps the store revamp that you completed, it is important to stay positive and focus on what worked well. Use those to motivate you for 2012. Take heed to the things that may have yielded undesirable results as well. Learning from your mistakes makes you a stronger person, but try not to dwell on them.

Also this month, we want to remind you to celebrate! The holidays are a time of cheer and we invite you to appreciate everything you have and take in all of the joys of the season. Always remember what is important in life and when conducting business; that way you are sure to reach great success in everything you do.

They can visit the salon a couple times a month to keep manicures fresh and their hands in tip-top shape, purchase their favorite polishes and paint their own nails in-home, or they may simply choose the low-maintenance technique of only trimming nails when they become a little too long. Your customers would be crazy if they told you they didn’t like to be pampered, but the process can quickly become expensive and thrown to the wayside when money gets tight. In the broadest sense, appliqués are smaller ornaments or devices that are applied to a different surface. This term is often used in reference to sewing or ceramics when prints, patterns and designs are made by overlaying elements. Now thanks to recent advances in the science of beauty, nail art can be added to that list. Depending on the presence of polish or even the shade of color that adorned the nail, the class status of the wearer was determined.

Over the years nail fashion transformed from a cultural signifier into a vehicle that took on the responsibility of portraying personality. No longer does nail color have to be so serious. That’s not to say it isn’t as important; today it can stand as the perfect finishing touch to an outfit or the perfect way to show the world what mood a customer is in on any given day.

Just as there are an abundance of moods and feelings that can be provoked by seeing a color, there is an array of designs to choose from when picking out a nail appliqué. Think of it this way, when customers enter a nail salon they have a wall of colors to choose from. Not only does the at-home nail appliqué customer have the hues of the rainbow to choose from, but they also have designs that can adorn their fingers and toes. Although the same amount of shades may not be available, the variety of patterns makes up for it. From flowers and lace to glitter and texture prints, every personality is covered.

“It was hard to pick the design out,” explained nail appliqué user and teacher Victoria Reed, “but that added to the excitement of trying them.” The sheer variety might have had her temporarily boggled, but she soon found the right match for her fingers. “I chose zebra print because my classroom was zebra print.

It matched my personality and room.” Just as she found the perfect design for her, your customers are sure to find just what they’re looking for with this product as well.

In reference to wearing longevity, nail appliqués claim to last up to 14 days, but reports show they can stay on even longer.

When the time comes to remove the color, customers simply rub with regular nail polish remover and the design or color comes off with ease. Some brands may even recommend peeling the design off before cleaning with remover. Packaged in sets of varying sizes to fit each fingernail (and they stretch to cover the entire nail), the customer receives everything they need with one purchase.

With all the excitement of this new product, ease of use and endurance of the polish, it makes one wonder – is this the fingernail polish of the future? Some argue that the traditional, affordable bottle of liquid nail polish will always be a go-to for nail flaunters.

However, this new trend could raise a new appreciation for the quick-setting, longer-lasting dry polish appliqués. Either way, when customers do their own nails at home (with whatever method they choose) they save money, have full reign over their design and do not feel the guilt of spending $50 or more for a manicure and pedicure that may chip within a few days. Why not encourage them to add nail appliqués to their manicure routine—they just may find their new mode of unique personal expression and nail maintenance all in one.

Now more than ever, point-of-purchase (POP) marketing has the power to drive in-store sales.

This is especially true as more companies incorporate social media technology into their product labeling and merchandising materials.

P

osters, countermats, brochures, signage and even sample packets frequently include social media messages, such as “Follow us on Twitter” or “Like us on Facebook.” Savvy pieces also include what’s called a Quick Response (QR) code, a square black-and-white bar code that consumers can scan with a cell phone or other QR-enabled device.

The best QR codes link the consumer to an educational video or website that helps them understand more about the product sitting on the shelf in front of them and why they should make the purchase. It’s like having a personal shopping assistant at your side.

The beauty of social media in POP materials is that there’s an opportunity for stores to tap into the buzz and excitement. There’s an online conversation going on before and after a customer gets to the shelf; if you can join the conversation, you’ll be able to win new customers and keep them coming back for more. Here are three easy ways to make it happen:

1. Create a Facebook page and start talking!

Facebook makes it easy for small businesses to set up a page. Not only will this be another avenue for you to tell your customers about store events and promotions, but it also allows you to connect with your topselling brands. 2. See what your top-sellers are doing online

Check out what your top-selling brands are saying online. Oftentimes, the brand will feature recent beauty articles that mention their products; other times, they’ll provide educational pieces or share recent customer testimonials. All of these types of materials can be printed out and placed at shelf or on a special endcap; it’s a great way to bring extra attention to a product you want to promote or feature and thus drive more unit sales of the item or line. When a brand features a how-to or product demo online, make use of it. If you have access to a video monitor, you can play the brand’s video in-store to help further educate your shoppers. A consumer will purchase more and more often when they feel empowered with information that lets them know they are making a good decision.

3. Make samples work harder for you Everybody loves to get free samples, but samples don’t always drive new sales. When you have brand samples to give away to customers, ask for something in return. For example, instead of just giving away samples, try this: invite customers to sign up for your store newsletter or flyer and offer them free samples in return. To entice more customers, try assembling small “goody” bags of an assortment of samples and give these to customers in return for them signing up to hear from you. Then, follow through: send periodic announcements about special in-store events, new product arrivals, sales and more. This will help bring customers back into the store for more sales.

The advent of social media has greatly extended the power of POP materials to reach your consumers before, during and after the sale. By actively engaging in social media, stores have an opportunity to generate more sales with existing shoppers and, perhaps as exciting, capture a whole new generation of customers.

Five Shocking Truths about Dry Skin Care We all hate to have that dry itchy skin as it needs extra dry skin care, especially if people experience perpetual exposure under the sun. This is why we understand that it is imperative to make skin supple and young by putting on moisturizer on the important areas of the face, body, shoulders and legs.

his article aims to educate people with dry skin regarding the moisturizer choices as choosing products for dry itchy skin is a make-or-break decision. It requires utmost vigilance because there are products that instead of adding benefit to the skin, worsens it with the ingredients that are infused with the product.

Starches like carbon and powder make the product richer, which explains why some beauty products are cheaper but directly ineffective moisturizers. Paraffin or mineral oil may moisturize your skin for a while, but after your body absorbs a high concentration of paraffin, you are prone to lesions and worse, skin cancer.

A product that contains large amounts of dioxane must not be used because this artificial derivative of coconut cream is known to cause skin cancer after prolonged use. This is the reason why products containing natural “extracts” and not “essences” should be the first choice of purchase as synthetic cream with “essences” never does good for the body.

Avocado oil is a natural moisturizer that can prevent dry skin for a long period of time and is natural source of vitamin E, while milk is known as a complete food not only good for nutritional digestion but also nice skin nourishment.

ulticultural consumers are just that. They come from a “multitude” of cultures and countries.

Retailers, marketers and manufacturers will want to keep that in mind as they plan merchandising activities for the upcoming 2012 year. Culture is not just a tie that binds consumers together, but a way to find added sales and returns on promotions.

Paying attention to multicultural holidays, special events and celebrations is important. The “Freedom Window” in the United States starts in January and extends through the last day of February—Black History Month. Through the years retailers have used this time period to reach out to black consumers in the United States. It has become one of the most visible examples of a multicultural marketing window and has encouraged year-round marketing activities for African-Americans.

Hispanic Heritage Month, split between September and October, has raised the profile of Hispanic consumers in a similar way. Major companies now have multicultural consumer marketing departments and designated managers that work year-round to reach black and Hispanic consumers.

Some ethnic holidays are always on the same day, particularly those which mark independence celebrations: March 1 – Korea’s Independence Day; July 4 – United States Independence Day; August 16 – the establishment of the Dominican Republic. Others are on different dates each year, especially those that are fixed by the moon’s cycle. The Chinese New Year is never on Jan. 1. It usually occurs sometime in January or February. The same can be said of the Christian holiday of Easter which is celebrated in the spring months (March, April). The Asian Harvest Moon Festival is sometime in the fall. Keep in mind that multicultural consumers not only like to celebrate their own holidays, they also like to participate in general market holidays like Valentine’s Day and Halloween.

which highlight rivalries among football teams from HBCU’s (Historically Black Colleges and Universities), are also a great way to make contact with multicultural consumers. Take a look in your own communities to find unique festivals and events.

The calendar that follows is not all-inclusive of all dates and ethnic groups. It covers some of the high spots, especially for African-Americans and Hispanics. It has reminders of promotional periods, including the “Freedom Window” and “Back to School.” In addition, seasonal reminders, noted by winter, spring, summer and fall symbols, are another way to think about appropriate products for the changing seasons, as well as appropriate seasonal promotions. Following this calendar is the SMSi Urban Call Marketing Promotion and Merchandising Planner with a 2012 calendar. It is the blank canvas where you can “Plan the Work” and “Work the Plan.”

fter a fire has burned a building structure and taken its toll on a business, the after effects of the fire seem to continue to ripple out of control, almost as much as the fire itself; loss of jobs, loss of customers, and perhaps even loss of the entire company. There’s nothing that’s not at stake and potential loss when a fire occurs and this is why when it comes to fires, it’s best to try and prevent them, rather than having to deal with them once they’ve already broken out.

Though we’ll get to what you really need in just a bit, first and foremost, get a fire escape plan together for your business. Identify all the available exits in your business, make sure they’re all functional and can be easily opened, especially during business hours. Make sure that all your employees know about them and have a trial run to make sure that everything seems to work out as planned. You may want to have everyone respond to a spontaneous drill and then see how much time it takes to get everyone out. You may also want to do this a few times within a couple months period of time, so that everyone has the evacuation procedures well in mind and the exit procedures just become second nature.

You also want to make sure that you have some hand-held fire extinguishers around—whether water, carbon dioxide, foam, chemical or dry powder. You want one for the most likely type of fire you’ll experience in an area. Water extinguishers should only be used in areas where there’s mainly paper and where there are few electrical products. Wherever you have many electrical products, often times carbon dioxide extinguishers are your best selection. Chemical extinguishers are great for kitchens where there is oil and dry chemical extinguishers are good for gas fires.

The best solution to have in place though is fire extinguishing systems.

Fire extinguishing systems are your 24 hour watchdogs for fires. The moment a fire breaks out they detect and extinguish them with the appropriate substances. There’s little you can do to put out a fire when no one is around. Weekends or late evenings are no less prone to fire attacks than daytime, and when they happen they need to be addressed immediately, not just when the fire department can arrive. All it takes is seconds for a fire to rage out of control and destroy servers, desktops, product, printers, documents, and anything else you can name within your place of business.

This is why it’s actually imperative to have a fire suppression expert come in and evaluate you situation.

You want a company that specializes in fire extinguishing systems and fire suppression systems. Have them come in, give your environment an overview and analysis, and help you reduce the risk your business is at from uncontrolled fires.

Look for a company that is willing to give advice free of charge and that has high quality systems from a range of suppliers.

reat companies are populated by great employees. While a top general manager is necessary, but not sufficient for the genuine long-term success of any company or major operating division, businesses that genuinely succeed and flourish over the long run have general managers who possess the vision, wisdom and courage to identify, attract, hire and mentor great assistant managers.

Consider Mark. Mark is an accomplished and respected general manager who does an excellent job for his company. Like many, he also spends too much time on tasks that should be handled by assistant managers. Mark claims that he is “just too busy to hire and train an assistant” and “he’s better off doing it himself.”

These responses are typical of those in his position, yet by securing and mentoring the right assistant managers Mark would have significantly more time to do what someone in his position should be doing (e.g. strategic thinking, developing multi-year business plans, etc.). In turn, his business would run more efficiently and profitably—and, equally as important, the next generation of senior leadership would be firmly in place.

What are the attributes that savvy general managers look for when they hire their key assistants?

Complementary skills - Good assistants are

typically not clones of their general manager, but rather bring new and different talents to the senior managerial mix. As one example, a “low tech” general manager would be particularly well-served to hire someone who really understands and knows when and how to use the many “high tech” tools that are available and applicable to the specific business needs of the company.

Practical experience - While in no way

diminishing the fundamental importance of a formal, industryspecific education, good assistants also need relevant hands-on experience before they are truly ready to function effectively. Ideally, this practical experience can and should be garnered in a variety of positions within the company or another company in the same industry.

Loyalty - Good assistants in any profession must be totally

loyal to their boss, the general manager. Anything less is simply unacceptable. Office politics might make for a good television sitcom, but they make for a bad assistant manager. There is more than a little truth in the old saying “When the boss looks good, everyone looks good.” Effective assistant managers fully trust in the 52

Good work ethic -

The successful assistant manager is someone who is willing and able to put in the necessary time it takes to help make the business a success. Nine-to-fivers need not apply. Acclaimed filmmaker John Frankenheimer of “The Manchurian Candidate” and “Birdman of Alcatraz” once said that “the importance of hard-working assistants cannot be overemphasized.”

Desire to be a general manager someday - Today’s assistant manager is potentially

tomorrow’s general manager. Someone who is content just to be an assistant manager without fervently aspiring to become a general manager someday is, generally speaking, not someone who most general managers would want on their senior management team.

(Yes, there are always exceptions.)

Passion and enthusiasm for the industry - Successful assistant managers are those people

who genuinely love their work and the particular industry they are in. It is simply put, “in their blood.” Hall of Famer Ernie Banks of the Chicago Cubs reiterated throughout his illustrious major league career that he would have gladly played baseball even if they never paid him a cent.

A willingness to be creative - The truly

successful assistant manager is someone who is willing to think outside the box. Better yet, he or she doesn’t think about boxes at all.

A common shortcoming of newer assistant managers is that they are on occasion too rules-oriented or too rigid. Industry-specific sense (i.e., common sense applied to one’s particular industry) comes to most assistant managers over time, especially when they are working for a mature, supportive and nurturing general manager.

An interesting person - Truly successful

assistant managers are not one-dimensional. They have creative, fulfilling personal lives and myriad interests and activities independent of their work. Some people may be particularly good at the specific tasks they perform, but seldom rise to positions of real leadership within a company, particularly that of assistant manager and/or general manager.

Whatever one’s business, hiring the right assistant managers can only increase the likelihood of long-term success for everyone associated with the company. Better yet, top assistant managers make the workplace more enjoyable—and when people truly love their work, productivity, customer satisfaction and profits all naturally increase. Locating, attracting, hiring and mentoring the right assistant manager is well worth the effort.

Typically OTC Beauty Magazine uses the Manufacturer Profile to spotlight one beauty supply manufacturer within the industry, educating readers on their product lines and company history.

However, as our staff brainstormed this issue, which concludes the entire year, we couldn’t choose just one. Instead we let the manufacturers speak for themselves. With submissions from multiple companies we learned about how the past year went for them as a whole—what trends emerged, what worked best, and what new products and undertakings really flourished—as well as how they plan to head into 2012, and what mindset they are taking with them. After all, there is no better way to evaluate the past year than hearing from a few of the industry leaders themselves.

pilo introduced several exclusive new products in the Mehaz line that were quite successful this year. The Mehaz Tweezer Catty features a full-size precision designer tweezer protected inside a plastic case with a coordinating design. It’s perfect for travel, purse or wherever you need a tweezer handy.

Exclusive designs included a red with white polka dot tweezer and a pink leopard print tweezer. The Mehaz Double-Sided Eyelash Applicator has two tips; a crescent shaped tip for applying strip lashes and a pointed tip for individual lashes. The original Mehaz Retractable Eyelash Comb separates lashes beautifully, and solves the storage problem by allowing the sharp teeth to retract into the handle. This protects the teeth and keeps them clean, while also protecting the user from the sharp teeth when rummaging through a purse or cosmetic bag.

All three of these products were very well received by professionals and home users alike for the innovation, quality and everyday challenges they resolve.

ew hair care trends are constantly emerging. The most recent trend to hit the hair care industry is natural/organic products.

More and more natural oils, extracts and botanicals are emerging and making their mark in the hair care arena, the most popular being Jojoba Oil, Argan Oil, and Macadamia Oil. These oils are being used in shampoos, conditioning/treatment products and styling creams.

Keeping the customer’s needs and wants in mind, Dax created four new petrolatum and mineral oil free hair care products, entitled Dax ROOTS. The four products in this line are ROOTS Bergamot Butter, ROOTS Hair Mayonnaise, ROOTS Jojoba Oil, and ROOTS Olive Cream, all of which are gaining popularity among salons and stores that have gone natural/organic. In the past 12 months Dax has learned to listen to their customers, and to change and grow to accommodate what they want and need. Companies must learn to amend old ideas and grow with the constantly changing industry.

In 2012, we will continue to grow as a company. We really want to continue to stretch our boundaries and create new products that will benefit our customers. We will be releasing new products and product lines in the upcoming year and hope to continue fulfilling our customers needs like we have done since 1954.

혹 ‘범애’ 라고도 표현되는 ‘박애’, 말만 들어도 따뜻함이 느껴지는 단어가 아닐 수 없다. 박애 의 사전적 의미는 ‘모든 사람을 평등하게 사랑함’ 이다. 작금의 시대는 부모 자식간에도 서로 법 정소송을 하는 시대이다. 이는 각박함의 범주를 넘음은 물론, 세상을 살아가는 사람들에게 살아가는 이유 가 무언인지에 대해 한번 생각하게 만들 만큼 충격으로 다가오는 ‘현실’인 것이다. 물론, 아직은 극소수 들의 이야기 이지만, 우리들에게 씁쓸함을 가져다 주는 ‘사실’인 것이다. 이렇게 세상이 각박해지는 것 은 인간에게도 이성적인 판단보다는 동물적인 생존본능이 앞서는 때가 있기 때문일 것이다. 사람들은 자신 의 생존에 위협을 받는다고 생각되면 바로 방어, 전투태세 모드로 바뀌기 마련이다. 소위 말하는 ‘발등에 불이 떨어진’ 상황인 것이다. 오랜 경제적 불황으로 인해 많은 사람들이 그러한 전투태세로 돌입하였으며 많이 날카로워진 것이 사실이다. 서로간의 경쟁은 점점 더 심해지고 있으며 남을 배려하는 마음도 위축되어 있다. 하지만, 이러한 각박한 사회 속에서도 연말을 맞아 온정의 손길들이 여기저기서 따뜻한 기운을 내고 있는 것을 보면 그나마 위로가 된다. 이번에 OTC 뷰티 매거진에서 인터뷰를 한 Austell, GA의 P J Beauty Supply 를 운영하고 있는 P J 사장은 천성적인 따뜻한 가슴으로 주위의 모든 사람들에게 ‘박애’를 나눠 주고 있는 사람이다. 특별히 거창한 행동을 하는 것은 아니지만, 그녀와의 인터뷰에서 느낄 수 있었던 따뜻 한 마음을 함께 느껴보도록 하자.

P J 사장 역시 대부분의 고객들 이 그녀의 이름을 알고 있을 정도로 고객들과의 사이가 돈독하다. “많은 사람들이 스 토어를 들어 오면서 ‘Hey P J’ 라고 제 이름을 부르며 인사를 합니다” 라고 하는 P J 사 장은 고객들에 대한 사랑이 남 달랐다.

동정, 연민이 아닌 사랑 정이 유난히 많은 P J 사장은 “흑인 손님들을 보면 이상하게 측은함이 듭니다” 라며 다 음과 같은 일화를 털어 놓았다. 계속 손님으로 방문하던 사람이 있었는데, 어느 순간부 턴가 물건을 훔치는 것을 봤다고 한다. 어느 정도 눈을 감아주고 있었는데, 한번은 헤 어 제품 3개를 몰래 가지고 나가는 것을 발견 하여 쫓아 나가서 이유를 물었더니 “돈이 없어서 그랬다” 라는 손님에게 “너의 자식이 보는 앞에서 이러면 안 된다. 경찰은 부르 지 않을 테니 물건을 놓고 가라” 라는 말로 타일렀다고 한다. 그 손님은 그 뒤로 한달 정도 모습을 보이지 않다가 다시 스토어를 찾아 와선, 그날 감사했다고 말을 전했다고 한다. 그 뒤로는 전혀 제품에 손을 대지 않고, 다시 단골 손님이 되어 버렸다고 한다. P J 사장은 “사실 그러한 일이 발생하면 그 사람이 미울 법도 한데, 저는 밉다는 생각보 다는 안됐다는 생각이 듭니다. 저도 제가 왜 그러는지는 잘 모르겠습니다” 라며, 심지 어 그 얘기를 하는 도중에도 눈가에 눈물이 살짝 맺히기도 하였다. 혹자는 너무 나약하 여 고객들에게 끌려가는 것이 아니냐고 말 할 수도 있다. 하지만 P J 사장은 단순히 그 들을 연민으로만 대하는 것이 아니다. 인성적으로 잘못된 부분은 바로 짚어준다고 한 December 2011 OTC Beauty Magazine

성실히 일하고 일한 만큼의 대가를 받아라 주위에 동 업종 스토어가 몇 개 있지만, 다행히도 가격에 대한 경 쟁이 심하지 않은 편이라고 하는 P J 사장은 “사실, 저는 주위의 동종업체를 많이 신경 쓰지 않는 편입니다” 라고 한다. 현재, 대 부분의 뷰티 서플라이 스토어들은 주로 한국 분들이 운영을 하 고 있다. 하지만 요즘과 같은 그릇된 경쟁으로는 본인들이 받아 야 할 노동의 대가를 제대로 받을 수 없을 것이다. 과도한 경쟁으 로 인해 가격을 서로 낮추다 보면 자신의 소중한 시간, 자금, 노 동을 투자한 가치도 함께 떨어진다는 것을 명심해야 할 것이다. “우리나라 사람들은 매우 머리가 좋은 사람들입니다. 하지만 스 토어를 운영하는 사람들이 서로의 감정싸움으로 인해 서로가 손 해를 보는 일이 발생하는 것 같습니다” 라는 P J 사장은 이러한 현실을 너무나 안타깝게 생각한다고 한다. P J 사장은 “모든 것 을 순리대로 성실하게 운영하다 보면 단순히 낮은 가격이상의 경 쟁력을 가질 수 있을 것입니다” 라고 한다. P J 사장은 지금까지 도매상에 부도 수표를 써본 적이 없다고 한다. 이는 돈이 많아서 가 아니라 신용을 매우 중시하려는 그녀의 경영 방식에서 나온 결과물인 것이다. “돈이 없으면 물건을 구매하지 않습니다. 신용 은 한번 잃으면 회복하기 어려우니까요” 라는 P J 사장은, 간혹 도매상의 실수로 주문한 양보다 더 많은 제품이 배달되는 경우가 있는데, 이럴 때에도 모르는 척 넘어가는 것이 아니라 반드시 도 매상에 그러한 사실을 알려주고 그만큼의 대금을 더 지불한다고 68

한다. 공짜물건을 싫어하는 사람이 있겠느냐 만은, P J 사장은 “ 제가 모른 척 하고 지나가기에는 마음이 너무 불편합니다. 그러 한 것도 모두 덕이 되어 어떠한 형태로든 다시 저한테 돌아 온다 고 믿고 있습니다” 라고 한다. 이는 고객들에게도 마찬가지이다. 헤어 제품을 구입하는 고객들이 제품을 잘 몰라 4팩을 사려고 하 면, 2팩만 필요하다고 말을 해 준다고 한다. 그래도 결국 3팩을 사가지고 가는 손님은 나중에 돌아와서 1팩이 남았다며 고맙다 는 말을 전한다고 한다. 그러한 것들이 고객들과의 신임을 쌓는 중요한 요인은 틀림 없는 사실일 것이다. 또한, 적은 금액을 구입 하는 고객일수록 더욱 친절하게 대해준다고 하는데, “그 작은 것 을 사기 위해 스토어를 방문해준 것이 고맙게 느껴 집니다” 라는 이유에서라고 한다. 현재, 뷰티 업계에 몸 담은 지 20년이 넘어서 조금 지칠 수도 있 겠다 싶겠다만, P J 사장은 집에 있을 때 피로하던 몸도 오히려 스토어에만 나오면 활기를 띄운다고 한다. 아마도 사람들에게 나 누어준 정이 에너지로 돌아오는 것이 아닐까 싶다. 취미로 수영 을 10여년이상 했다는 P J 사장은 수영장을 50번을 왕복할 만큼 대단한 실력과 체력을 가지고 있다고 한다. 또한, 매일 아침마다 30~40분 걷는 운동도 빼먹지 않는다고 한다. P J 사장은 작은 체 구를 가지고 있지만, 그녀의 넘치는 고객 사랑과 활력은 사람들 에게 그녀의 ‘커다란’ 존재감을 심어주기에 모자람이 없었다. P J 사장의 따뜻한 사랑으로 어우러진 비즈니스에 앞으로도 지속 적인 성공을 기대해 본다.

One of the stand-out opportunities for the decade of the teens is the emphasis manufacturers and salons are placing on building business with men.

Be prepared to make the most of the men.

Here are a few tips for success:

Make it easy; don’t make him hunt – Stock male specific items on end caps and high traffic areas where guys will literally trip over them. Beauty stores can intimidate guys. Make it easy for him to get in, find what he wants and get out.

Electrify him – Electrical cutting tools, clippers and

trimmers will be hot sellers to your male clients. They rely on these tools for daily and weekly grooming. The higher ticket these tolls bring is welcome revenue. Be sure to mark these up properly for your fair return.

UP-sell – Guys are especially susceptible to powerful suggestion and professional up-selling. Suggest and recommend related items. They will promptly pony up plastic to make these purchases.

Therapy Trends ‘Twas the Year of Global Beauty Les Nubians, Nneka and Izibor are the names of 2011’s beauty icons. Not to mention, Leila Lopes the African born Miss Universe of 2011. These multicultural, multiracial beauties from around the world have impacted OTC consumers throughout the year. Their hairstyles and cosmetic usage have influenced product purchases. Every complexion or grade of hair is celebrated and every corner of the globe is represented.

As well, home-grown multicultural beauty has influenced the world. Natural beauty products are designed for locks as much as waves. Relaxers and smoothers target a wider spectrum of multicultural hair types.

In 2011 ethnic products have global uses. Products were defined by the problem they solved. Dry Shampoos, thermal styling aids, keratin smoothers solved a problem for any type hair. Braiding and locking were not limited to African Americans. High reds and neon green hair color was universal.

Consumers were more concerned about minimizing shampoo and conditioner usage than the origin of the product. They were more interested in extending time between salon visits than using a ‘typical’ product form.

This year explored the many ways to repair, restore and revive hair. The key ingredients used were sourced from around the world. Imported oils, waxes and protein complexes were formulated for the masses. Shoppers widened their purchase patterns to seek products from around the corner or around the web.

OTC dealers will have to watch the trends carefully.

New product concepts may attract new customers, or existing customers may seek previously not ethnic products in other channels.

Against The Grain Retrospectively Speaking 2011 was an incredible year for the hair care industry. Looking back on it all, even in this recession, we experienced double-digit growth in the Barbering and Cosmetology sector, and education seemed to be all the rage. I would like to offer a great tip to all Barber and Beauty suppliers. Now is the time to offer or sponsor “how to seminars” or in-store education opportunities to your customer base. Yes, there is a great deal of information online, but you cannot replace live interaction and real demonstrations of product effectiveness. ontinuing the autumn round of trade shows, the Jinny Los Angeles branch held its fall 2011 trade show at the Shrine Expo Center on October 16. With over 100 exhibitors filling 112 booths, customers certainly had an array of products to explore.

Great selection can only mean a larger variety of products available in-store, which benefits both store owners and customers.

Serving as a sign of a successful show, Larry Pata, VP of Marketing of Jinny Corp. observed, “a casual survey of exhibitors indicated that they were all pleased with not only the number of orders, but also the apparent size of the orders and number of items ordered.�

The past few years for the Jinny Los Angeles Fall Show have shown a steady increase in store attendance. Boasting approximately 450 attendees, this event held up to its reputation. If the trend keeps progressing the way it has been, great things are without a doubt waiting for Jinny Corp., customers and manufacturers in spring 2012.

teady traffic. Typically this phrase causes stress and anxiety upon hearing it, at least for those who fight packed highway commutes each day. However, if you are an exhibitor at a tradeshow—the Jinny Chicago Fall Show to be specific—these words bring great comfort. Eighty five vendors experienced this feeling of excitement at the event which took place at the JBS Cash and Carry building on October 23. Serving over 200 customers throughout the day, vendors were kept on their toes.

Exhibitors and customers alike agree that the show was a great success. Additionally, Jinny Corp. gave away close to $20,000 worth in show prizes. In case the great deals that were given at the show were not enough, this factor undoubtedly added to customer satisfaction.

With only one show remaining in the fall show season following this one, Jinny Corp. members were sure to keep the enthusiasm up as the event made its way to the last stop, Houston.

ife is full of firsts. First steps, first loves, first jobs and on October 30, Jinny Houston experienced quite an exciting first – the inaugural trade show event at that location.

Boasting a visitor base of 250 people and featuring 120 exhibitors, the evening followed suit of the other Jinny shows of the season, being both profitable and fun for everyone involved.

“Even though it was the first show in the Houston branch, it was successful,” declared Jae An, sales representative for Jinny Houston. Along with the excitement of the first-time trade show came the apprehension that filled the crowd for even further firsts by the company. “People were really waiting for the JBS Beauty Club opening on November 21,” An explained. The fact that the trade show was held in the building where the JBS location was set to open undoubtedly made visitors even more eager. Additionally, a $12,000 value of show prizes was given to customers by Jinny Corp.

Not only did the Houston branch host a day of product savings for customers, but the Dallas location also offered an exclusive JBS Beauty Club Special Sale. With so many options for Texas residents and visitors alike to find new items at low prices, this was definitely a great way to end the 2011 round of Jinny Fall Selling Shows.

Jinny Corp. Celebrated Houston Branch Opening with Dinner

Jinny Houston hosted a dinner event in Houston on Sunday, October 30th to celebrate their new branch and its opening of JBS Beauty Club, which was opened to OTC customers on November 21, 2011.

Eddie Jhin, Top Manager of Jinny United stated, “We hosted this event in order for us to thank our customers truly for their support and taking their time with our people to get to know one another, this meant a lot to us.” Jhin added, “The most important element in running any solid company is making sure that our staff members are servicing and listening to our customers’ concerns and making sure that they are following up on their requests. Our Jinny staff members need to be very open minded to our customers’ feedback, dig further to find out where the weakness lies in the company and we must improve over time. We need to do more of these types of events to learn about our customers’ business, do our best in supporting their business needs and following our company guidelines.”

Jinny Houston is made up of young motivated staff members who will service their customers as best as they can and it will take some time for them to learn this new market. Overall, Jinny Houston would like to say “Thank you very much for allowing us the opportunity in servicing their accounts.”

뉴스거리 구글, 미국 스마트폰 광고검 색 97% 장악 미국 시장에서 구글의 영향력이 더욱 확대 되고 있다. 이미 PC웹 검색을 넘어서서 모 바일에서도 강세를 보이고 있으며, 특히 안 드로이드를 탑재한 스마트폰이 전 세계적 으로 확산되면서 구글 모바일 광고 사업이 더욱 탄력 받고 있다. 글로벌 모바일 광고 시장은 지난 3년 동안 PC 온라인 광고보다 2배 이상의 성장률을 기록했으며, 이러한 추세는 당분간 지속될 것으로 전망된다. 정 보통신정책연구원(KISDI) 동향분석실 김욱 준 전문연구원은 방송통신정책 ‘동향: 구글 의 모바일 광고 서비스 동향’에서 구글이 미 국 모바일웹 검색광고의 97%를 장악했다

손톱 건강 체크법

구글의 비밀 연구소 “X”

업주 세르게이 브린, 래리 페이지, 에릭 슈 미트 회장도 회의에 참여했을 것으로 추정 했다. 특히 세르게이 브린이 적극적이었던 것으로 알려졌다. 씨넷의 스테판 솅크랜드 는 “구글TV, 구글맵스, 구글뮤직, 안드로이 드 등 구글이 내놨던 모든 서비스를 통합, 발전시키면 (미래 기술을 실현할) 가능성이 있다”며 “구글의 비밀연구소X는 현재 가장 야심찬 프로젝트로 꼽을 수 있 다”고 말했다. 흥미로운 점은 비밀연 구소X에서 연구한 기술 중 하나가 올 해 연말경에 베일을 벗는 다는 점이 다. 다만 아직까지 어떤 기술이 공개 될 지는 알려지지 않았다. 질 헤이젤 베이커 구글 대변인은 비밀연구소X에 대한 언급을 거부했으나 “미래 프로젝 트에 투자하는 것은 구글의 DNA에서 중요한 부분”이라고 말했다.

뉴스거리 날개길이 26 cm 인 나방 날개 전체 길이가 무려 26cm에 달하는 거 대한 나방이 지난달 중국 윈난성 뤼량에 위 치한 한 공장 근처에서 발견됐다. 이 적갈 색의 나방은 ‘아틀라스 나방(Atlas Moth)’ 으로, 날개 전체 길이가 보통 20~30cm에 달해 세계에서 가장 큰 나방 종(種)으로 알 려져 있다. 나방을 처음 발견한 공장 직원 원 사오쿠이 씨는 “책을 찾아보고 나서야 이 나방이 ‘아틀라스 나방’이라 불리는 걸 알게 됐다. 정말 크기가 크다. 날개 길이만 26cm이다”라고 말했다. 아틀라스 나방의 주 서식지는 말레이시아, 태국, 인도네시아 등 열대 지방이기 때문에, 이 지역에서 아 틀라스 나방이 발견되는 건 굉장히 드문 일 이라고 한다. 원 사오쿠이 씨는 “책을 보 니 아틀라스 나방은 주로 녹나무(camphor tree)에 서식하는데, 공장 주변에 녹나무가 많아서 아틀라스 나방이 발견된 것 같다”라 고 전했다.

항산화물질 있어 사과보다 효과 일정한 양의 키위를 매일 먹으면 고혈압을 예방할 수 있다는 연구 결과가 나왔다. 최 근 미국심장학회 회의에서 발표된 내용에 따르면 하루에 키위를 3개씩 먹으면 혈압을 낮출 수 있다는 것이다. 연구팀은 55세 이 상으로 모두 혈압이 약간 높은 118명의 성 인을 대상으로 연구를 진행했다. 일부 사람 들에게 8주 동안 하루에 키위를 3개씩 먹게 하고, 또 다른 사람들에게는 8주 동안 사과 를 매일 한 개씩 먹게 했다. 실험기간이 지 난 뒤 측정한 결과, 키위를 먹은 사람들은 사과를 먹은 사람보다 수축기 혈압이 낮아 진 것으로 나타났다(평균 3.6mmHg). 연구 팀은 이 같은 현상의 원인으로 키위에는 황 색의 색소 호르몬인 루테인이 풍부한데, 이 는 항산화물질로 고혈압을 유발하는 유해

Broadening its national, 3rd annual No Excuse! Stop the Abuse!™ Initiative in October, Johnson Products Co. (JPC) supported National Domestic Violence Awareness Month with its cosponsorship of a Congressional Briefing on Capitol Hill in support of continued federal funding of domestic violence programs for women and children. Cosmetic Ingredient Review Expert Panel Findings

In September, at its 120th meeting in Washington, the Cosmetic Ingredient Review Expert Panel (CIR) concluded that formaldehyde and methylene glycol is safe for use as a preservative in cosmetics when formulated to ensure use at the minimal effective concentrate and nail hardening products in the present practices of use and concentration; however, unsafe in the present practices of use and concentration in hair smoothing products (aka hair straightening products). The CIR is an independent, non-profit body of scientific and medical experts that assesses the safety of ingredients used in cosmetics in the U.S. This review was the result of a request by the FDA, the Professional Beauty Association (PBA) and the Personal Care Products Council (the Council).

Kassidy was always a very positive advocate and spokesperson for the professional salon and spa industry.

His 40 year career included a long success story as a licensed hair designer, salon owner, educator, consultant and the owner of Kassidy’s Salon Management Consultants. His company offered seminars, videos, tapes and guidance on front desk operations, retail programs, booth rental structures, legal structures, employee relations and salon management issues. He

The CIR report is the latest in a series of challenges to the safety of hair straightening products containing formaldehyde, methylene glycol or formalin, or releasing formaldehyde during the procedure. As PBA has previously reported, the FDA and OSHA also have taken recent actions regarding formaldehyde-releasing products or treatments.
