Rotary Honours Māoriland Big Bang Adventure Race more popular than ever

The Rotary Club of Ōtaki held a community dinner at the Ōtaki Golf club to celebrate 100 years of their Rotary Foundation, and to honour Libby Hakaraia. Rotary Foundation has invested over $3 million worldwide in improving the lives of other people. They claim to have been instrumental in eradicating Smallpox, and are now on the verge of eradicating Polio, which is 99.9% defeated.

Named after the founder of Rotary, awarded to Rotarians who have made an outstanding contribution to their Rotary clubs: occasionally awarded to non-Rotarians in recognition of exceptional service to the community. In the past two decades, Ōtaki Rotary has made awards to three people: Murray Scott, ex-mayor of Ōtaki, Anne Thorpe, for the good community works she and husband performed and Peter Hosiaux, for his community work, particularly for surf club and canoe polo.

the river section and had to cycle down the Ōtaki Gorge from Shield Flat to the end of Kaitawa Road (over the swing bridge), taking over eight hours to finish. The start line was only revealed the previous night, so teams with their support crew and supporters were on private land alongside the Waitohu Quarry soon after 7.30am, ready to collect their course maps and last minute instructions for the 8am start. With the starting point at the top of the paddock, teams had to run around the paddock, negotiating five horse jumps before collecting their bikes and heading up the track to Gundy’s Hut. Several teams took a wrong turn and ended up in the next paddock! It’s a steep climb up to Gundy’s - quite a challenge for many, but once at the top it Libby charmed them was ‘leave the bikes and take to their feet’
