Shining the Starlight on Matariki

BY MARGARET ANDREWS The advent of Matariki, the Maori New Year was celebrated at Nga Purapura with a family day of celebration, a day of art, music entertainment and a wahi tapu bus tour around significant and historical sites around the wider Ōtaki area. Inside the main hall were tables of goodies to buy from artworks and handcrafts to some foods made with native plants and leaves. There were information tables including enrolments for the New Zealand Maori Electoral Roll, the launch of the Maori 2017/18 maramataka - calendar, as well as a woodworking space and display of goods made by the Kapiti Workworkers Guild. There was Starlab planetary “room”, and you could see tattoo artists at Making your own porotiti - spinner was very popular, especially with the children. The porotiti, a musical instrument, is a flat oval wooden disc with two holes drilled in the centre which have string threaded through them. work along with a variety of entertainment and interest speakers. Outside were a variety of food stalls – promoting healthy foods. Zeal youth organisation coffee cart was on site too, this is used as a barista training centre young people and their music hub, set up in a portable container, was open for people to try out their own musical “sounds”. The Kori Kaumatua group gave a very energetic exhibition of several of the exercise and dance numbers from the hour long class. This exercise class is designed for
